G: .....I’ve never heard that expression before. H: Maybe it’s a generational thing? My aunts say it all the time.
(description under the cut)
[A four panel comic that takes place in a coffee shop. Harrow is a customer and Gideon and Camilla are baristas. Panel 1: Gideon hands Harrow a paper coffee cup and says, “Black coffee for Ha-- hey! Your earrings are really cute!”
Panel 2: Harrow has numerous piercings in her ears, left eyebrow, and lower lip. But the large, dangling skeletons that hang from her lobes are the most notable. She is flustered and says, “Oh! Well, you know what they say...” Gideon smiles politely.
Panel 3: The background is dark and Harrow’s face is half hidden in dramatic shadow. She says, “THERE IS A SKELETON IN EVERYONE, JUST WAITING TO COME OUT.”
Panel 4: Harrow walks away from the service counter, looking forlornly at the cup in her hands as she wonders, “Why did I buy this?” Gideon leans on the counter, watching her go, and Camilla leans on Gideon. Camilla asks, “Did that goth kid just threaten you?” Gideon smiles and says, “Yep!”]

how is it possible that gideon's ghost was in the au coffee shop? also do you think she knew she was in that bubble? I would like if this to be faced up again in atn 🤷‍♀️
Oh yeah, it's not possible for her to have been there. She doesn't remember it because that wasn't really Gideon.
If Harrow needed a cast member for her bubble whose soul wasn't available to call, she could create a sort of a simulacrum of the person to stand in. A dream-person.
Tumblr media
That's how Coronabeth, Judith, and the Sixth were able to be present in her dream bubble of Canaan House, and how she was able to conjure up an Aiglamene for the Royalty AU and a Crux for the Nova AU, despite Crux and Aiglamene still being alive.
I would guess that the better Harrow knew a person, the better a copy of them she could dream up. So Judith, whom she only knew in passing and never gave a second thought, was not nearly convincing enough to fool the people who really knew her. Meanwhile Crux, the man who raised her, was so convincing that a lot of us thought he had died and was really there. As well as Harrow knows Gideon, she could conjure up a hell of a convincing copy of her. At least in the short-term.
So tl:dr: Gideon the flirtatious hot barista was Harrow's dream girl.

Y'all I think that Tasmyn Muir wants people to write Harrow Nova AU fanfiction. Explicit PWP fanfiction specifically. I feel like it brings her great joy to enable that.

something really interesting i noticed the fandom do from time to time is forget that the harrowhark brain aus are made by harrowhark, and not an objectively accurate alternate universe. i dont mean that theyre incorrect but the universes themselves reveal a lot about harrows perception of an idealized romance:
harrow nova puts gideon in a position where she clearly has the upper hand being the rev daughter, but harrow still places herself in a position where she is not only intent on serving her as a cav but more importantly feeling like she is indebted to her
royal highness/bachelorette pictures gideon as someone revered and out of reach (her heart was beating so hard; she did not know why she was afraid), and in the setting its implied that harrow has to compete for / earn her, even if she refuses to participate.
and BARIstar is an obvious meetcute where even in a universe where they had never known each other prior, harrow still meets gideon and is charmed by her on sight.
like it drives me off a cliff that 1) harrowhark is a heartrotting romantic; she really and truly believes that she cant live in a universe without gideon, and in ADDITION she will make it so that harrow will find gideon anywhere because having a universe with her in it isnt enough - she needs to fucking revolve around her
and yet 2) harrowhark idolizes an image of gideon: they hated each other to full comprehension of the other on the ninth but they never even considered each other friends until canaan. harrow knows how gideon works, but she doesnt know her as well as friend and as a person. the harrow nova au portrays gideon as someone generous and something harrow has to prove herself to & to make up her existence for. the royal highness au doesnt even show gideon at all, but in the same work as nova harrows placed her in a position of higher power like a subversion of their dynamic on the ninth. the BARIstar au hides gideons rank but harrow is caught up in her image anyway. she is completely infatuated with gideon but sees her as an act to be redeemed by before seeing her as a person and its KILLING me. its Killing me. did you know gideons megadead? did you know kiriona now holds that subversion of power over harrow that she had dreamed up in her own mind?? did you know that harrowhark "CATHOLICISM" nonagesimus has confessed her crimes in the saltwater and instead of being rebuked by it like she wanted, gideon fucking forgave her?? im sick in the head this post was just supposed to be about how funny it is that harrow likes gideon so bad. shes infatuated ohhh shes so down bad. did you know rivers are freshwater??

Ok, so I need to know something about the BARIstar AU, Tamsyn.
In all the other AUs, Ortus, Abigail, and Magnus turn up in thematically appropriate roles and costumes.
But there's no detail about them in the BARIstar AU. From the way the conceit is described, they must have all been there, but I need to know if by that point Harrow was just so laser focused on Gideon that she sort of forgot to include them in the story and they were just standing there bemused in their civvies? Or did they have roles we're not party to? Was Ortus wearily manning the blender behind the coffee bar? Did Abigail suddenly find herself incongruously an admiral?

I stand by a statement I wrote long ago that every conceivable river bubble AU that Harrow had would have ended in a conflict where Gideon would die for her.
There are some things you can't change. Harrow can't change whose grief it is that she is feeling. And that small shard of Gideon that is with Harrow always can't stop saving her at any cost. Reverend daughter Gideon? Probably dies for Harrow Nova in the fight against Cytherea at Canaan. 100%. Harrowhark, who would never seek to compete for her divine highness' hand with her face, would live only because her Divine Highness would die to protect her. Probably Cytherea related. And Gideon Nav, most skilled baristar of the cohort, would die to save Lieutenant Harrowhark.

Brothers of White Glass by KaiserJo Rated: M
Silas Octakiseron finds himself in an un-winnable fight against Ianthe, with only one way out. The consequences of his choice will change him beyond imagining.
    great 8th piece.
On the Nature of Love and Sin by nohrg Rated: T
“Above all, love each other deeply, Harrow,” he quotes quietly, “because love covers over a multitude of sins.”    -----    Three interwoven scenes exploring Harrowhark and her experiences with love.
ice cold knuckle sandwich by misura Rated:G
The one time Palamedes punched someone.
6th Warriors of the Twelve Wives by Morike91 Rated: G
That was when recognition struck me like Augustine’s rapier at practice. I knew this armor from my youth.I would like to give myself slack for not noticing the armor earlier--I had been busy adjusting to Lyctorhood after all--but cutting myself slack was never something that got us to where we were. To where I was.    -    Ianthe reminisces about a historical union between the Third and Ninth houses.
Memeweaver by sobekcroc Rated: G
The night after the Fourth House has a real bad time, Harrow hears Gideon having nightmares. Involves at least 3 memes.
An Impromptu Christening by zygodidactyl Rated: G
The Ninth house finds a body and a baby. Nobody who matters is really thrilled about this turn of events.
    oh this? this is beautiful
Brew the Dead by quantumvelvet Rated: T
“The coffee,” Pent repeats, and there's a slight hitch to her voice as she shifts, jarring her broken arm, “is haunted.”
Little baristar AU feat Abigail. Cute.
Take it Black & Never Go Back by misura Rated: G
"So," said Gideon.    "Well," uttered Harrow, with the sinking realization that this date might turn into a total and utter disaster, actually, because Harrow was an utter and total failure as a human being who did not deserve to live or breathe the same air as someone so obviously amazing and fantastic as Gideon Nav.
Another baristar AU, i love how the divine highness ones often start where cannon left off but the baristar ones are slices all over the place.

One of my biggest hopes for Alecto is that Harrow has a minute of going full Carrie revenge insane upon finding out what they did to Gideon’s body. Like. Throughout Canaan House and especially in the AUs, we get the sense of Harrow having a deep desire to protect Gideon’s body even if it is in her own solitary goth nun way. She wants Gideon to put more consideration into the danger of avulsion before agreeing. She tells her afterward not to price her life so cheaply. She makes Cam and Pal check on her multiple times. She leaves her bread in a drawer. She’s fully on board to throw Camilla towards possible death in the interest of keeping Gideon safe. And then when she finally sees her in the coffee AU her description is just so soft and loving even when she’s about to pass out because she saw her arms, and continues that way until the end of the book. When Ianthe thinks it’s Harrow in Nona she’s surprised she isn’t violently storming the compound to recover Gideon’s body. Anyway she should find out how BOE and Jod treated her body and go on a tiny insane revenge spree. As a treat.
You are SO fucking right. Deep down inside Harrow is that one gif of the girl holding puppies and crying because she can't protect them, only the puppies are a butch lesbian determined to throw herself into a meat grinder.
I think Harrow might be a little grateful for the unbreakable bones and indestructable skin part of Jod's deal re: Gideon—she may have done that herself in Canaan House, if she'd known how—but the rest of it? The gaping wounds, the leaving her dead? Kill Bill sirens. She has been trying so hard to protect and preserve Gideon, to give Gideon a life, and when Gideon's own father has the chance to restore her he just slaps her together with crazy glue and calls it fine? That is not fine.
If she ever finds out how Gideon's corpse was being treated while her murderer lay in state on a bed of flowers... Man, I would not want to be in the room where that happened.
It would be so cathartic to see her tear into John over his part of it. Gideon already went apeshit on him for how he treated Harrow, so it's only fair Harrow gets to have her go. It's equality!! If We Suffer could somehow be there to be held accountable, too, so much the better.
And after that, what I really really want to see is Harrow turning the soft and loving vibe from the Baristar AU on the real Gideon, and channeling that protective fury toward protecting or restoring Gideon. I know it's probably not going to be exactly how it happens, what with everything else going on, but that sleeping beauty fakeout has me hungry to see Harrow try to ride in and rescue her prince.
In abscence of her body, Harrow's soul dreamed of Gideon's eyes; and in abscence of her soul, Harrow's body dreamed of Gideon's hands. If we don't get to see some pay off when she has those hands to hold again, I'm gonna have to chew my own fucking leg off.

Wake = Titania
This is a crack theory based on arguably unfounded logical leaps
Important background: Why are the three Fourth House chapters in HtN marked Fourth House? Hmm the Sleeper or Wake are mentioned in the two chapters [3rd is BARISTAR] that barely or don't feature Isaac and Jeannemary (nor Ulysses and Titania) [Chapters 8 (River Bubble!Canaan House arrival) and 30 (Dios apate, minor)].
Therefore, the Sleeper/Wake must somehow be a Fourth House character or have some significant connection to the Fourth House.
And then the wild leap step: Well, we know of Four Fourth House characters and they're Isaac, Jeannemary, Ulysses, and Titania. Ulysses dragged himself and RB 8 into a stoma, never to be seen again. Huh, Harrow the Ninth ended with Ianthe saving John from the same fate and Augustine saying hello from the other side of the stoma. Just like Ulysses.
Hmmm, other theories have reports of lyctors' deaths being greatly exaggerated (Cassie) (Mercy would def have helped her fake her death in the River). I don't recall any physical descriptions of Titania (I would check, but a. crack theory and b. I need to finish typing this and go to sleep). Huh, Wake sure is unusually robust and not insane to the point of incoherence for a revenant. Particularly a non-necromantic revenant. Who lived in her bones and then a sword for nearly two decades. And then possessed a lyctor's corpse. That's not how that's supposed to work.
What if we still only know of Four Fourth House characters? What if Wake is Titania? So many other lyctors were working with (or sleeping with) Blood of Eden. What's one more?
What if going through the stoma reverses lyctorhood? Allowing Titania to be her own person again? Or maybe even mimics the effects of the first Resurrection, revived to life with no memories of what came before but vague senses of emotional truths?
Tl;dr: Wake is somehow connected to the Fourth House and reviving Titania fits with Pyrrha's cav experience and provides a possible answer to what happens when one goes through the stoma, a question I'd argue Harrow the Ninth is asking the reader to consider. New characters are for suckers, secret identities for everyone!
P.S. The reason Abigail shuts down Harrow's adorable coffee shop au is because she accidentally pulled the Teens back into the bubble and Abigail is freaking out bc she thought she already solved that problem. No matter how fun it is to imagine Abigail as a coffee shop au hater.

Fic title
To die and always live
Ir alternately
To live yet always die
making this the bariSTAR au: gideon has a knack for avoiding close calls in war (a gunshot avoided a major artery, shes always just Far to the right of whoever was next exploded) and after every surviving night she goes off to take a coffee shift so she can have free hot chocolate and to ogle at older women. the day after she offers harrow the cup of coffee is where she swears she died - she woke up on the cot after feeling Nothing at all - but shes fine. just a minor concussion. but as the great homestuck once said: it keeps happening. Every Single Time harrow stops by she swears she dies the night after and its fucking driving her to the point of obsession that she wants to track harrow down outside the shop

It's probably not the intended reading, but I think the funniest possible explanation for Abigail having interrupted Harrow's coffee shop AU so much more abruptly than the others was bc she saw their hands touch and could tell that the butterflies were taking off in Harrow's stomach and she desperately wanted to avoid having to navigate being a psychopomp in the kind of dream that teenage girls in love sometimes have and absolutely do not want a greek chorus for
