A soft Pabu playlist for your soft Pabu needs
Tumblr media
I made a playlist of songs that gave me romantic Pabu vibes, and then I went on an unexpected hiatus and never had a chance to share it. But I listened to this nearly every day, and it became my unofficial summer soundtrack, so I'm finally sharing it for anyone else who wants some writing/drawing music for their Bad Batch/Pabu fics and art, or anyone who just wants to relax into the Pabu vibe.
It's great for dancing in the kitchen, BTW. 🩵💚🩷

Bapping you. Mind if I ask what got you into comics??? Partially bc curious + you have good taste, even if I'm probably biased
I'm so serious when i tell you Who's to Say
The thing about me is that im totally normal one day and then suddenly an interest will be activated in my brain with no warning. There's a pattern to it once im stuck in an interest too, where I'll start off being a fan one one character for a decent amount of time and then overnight I'll switch to another for no reason at all. It happened with DC, it happened with Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, it happened with TMNT (though this was an iteration switch not character lol), it happened before that, and it'll happen again. The only exception to this i can think of is spider noir but there's like.. 5 characters who are all friends/in close relation so. If you're talking about one of them you're talking about the others too lol.
If i think really far back, I first got into comics in elementary school, but it was a very casual, short lived thing. I was actually really into captain america? But comics were confusing to me then so I didn't stick it out very long. I did watch a lot of x-men and marvel movies when I was younger too, but nothing crazy to note fan-wise beyond like..... sometimes roleplaying x-men on forums in middle school LOL. I got back into comics in high school, and by comics i mean 1 (one) spider noir. Spiderverse came out and boom. Mr. Dark and Emo had me in his clutches. I became a noir scholar right then and there, with much help from HopelesslyLost.
I was very content with that being my comic experience until pretty recently. Maybe 5-6 months ago? This is going to sound insane but i swear DC got to me this past year through subliminal messaging. Once I became lowkey obsessed overnight I started noticing a lot of DC stuff id unknowingly consumed on pinterest and tiktok LMAO.
I wish I had a real answer beyond I am at the mercy of some unknown force bewitching me every so often. I hope this... helps? answers your question?

This playlist is 26 of my absolute favorite songs and artists from 2024. This is meant to be played in order. Enjoy!
Kendrick Lamar-Not Like Us: The Climax of the biggest rap beef in decades. "Not Like Us", was everything it needed to be catchy, devious, incisive, intelligent, infectious, and, fun. Produced by DJ Mustard and performed by KDot, the track is a West Coast banger for the history books. Think "No Vaseline", "Hit Em Up", "Dre Day", "Real MFing Gz" and "Dollars & Sense" but mix that with something like California Love and Still D.R.E in terms of anthemic quality. Incredible.
Vince Staples-Etoufee: Vince Staples has always been good but he's been nothing but great in the 2020s and he continued that with his album Dark Times this year. "Etoufee" is another banger from Vince who has a great ability to make hood bangers while sprinkling harsh truths and being relatable to those he's trying to reach with his music. Not to mention how catchy this tune is.
Ice Cube- So Sensitive: The track has that classic g-funk sound, it truly feels like a classic song Cube that could've been made in 1993. It's fun to listen to veterans still interested in making good music.
Rapsody-Look What You've Done: A highlight off Rapsody's brilliant album Please Don't Cry, a track that speaks to being underappreciated and touches on repping for black women and others in the game like her and those who chose a different path to get their voices heard.
Che Noir-Black Girl ft Rapsody: Che Noir is one of the best bubbling in the underground and "Black Girl" is one of the best on her latest project Lotus Flower. A hard boom bap finds both going hard, Che is sharp on this but Rapsody is the clear stand-out as she speaks to how her resume is Teflon considering the caliber of MCs she's rapped with.
Lupe Fiasco-Palaces: Lupe's Samurai is a must-listen released this past year. The piano-laden shadowy beat is great. The melancholic tune finds Lupe touching on staying true to yourself and your art because when you're gone it'll be all you have left when you leave.
J. Cole ft Ab-Soul & Daylyt-Pi: Despite the misguided conversations about J. Cole this year, he continued being one of the best rappers in the game. Ab-Soul and Daylyt were both stellar on this track, yet J. Cole is a clear standout. Some of the best rapping in 2024.
Future & Metro Boomin Ft Kendrick Lamar-Like That: A great beat from Metro, and one that provides the perfect canvas for Kendrick Lamar to launch the first bomb at Drake and J. Cole. It's a slightly humorous yet stern verse that's boxed in by a catchy hook from Future.
Drake- Push Ups: Drake's first official response to Kendrick Lamar and, several others etc. It's the only one of the Drake diss tracks I actually liked the beat was nice and Drake's tone and quips are at their most witty to me, his flow is nicely in pocket. It was a reputable response.
J. Cole- Stickz N Stonez: Another great lyrical performance from J. Cole that finds him in pure braggadocio mode. This is exactly the type of track detractors who hate his decision to step out of the battle will say rings hollow since he stepped out of a beef/battle with Kendrick Lamar. "I'm Not ducking no 1 on 1s". I still can't get past how good he is from a skill-set standpoint. He sounds great.
Kendrick Lamar-Watch The Party Die: In the wake of everything Kendrick released this as almost a pallet cleanser. It sonically goes in the opposite direction of Not Like Us. And is more in line with a 6:16 in LA. As Kendrick is speaking to reshaping both black culture as a whole and the industry. He speaks to clear ideological differences in the way he thinks and sees how the rap game should be and others and wishes to do away with old ways he views as detrimental. "Dear God Draw the line they trying to confuse em with me" Dope and fascinating.
Eminem-Renaissance: Eminem steps back into a time machine and brings us back to as close '99-'00 Shady as he possibly can I think he does a good job as he continues to go in on critics.
Kendrick Lamar-Wacced Out Murals: A stealy remorseless Kendrick speaks his mind on this beat. Addresses the Superbowl controversy, give affirmation in the chorus. Kendrick Lamar has a way of being captivating, different vocal inflections, and rises to the occasion of any beat. The gravity of whatever he says always cuts through.
Megan Thee Stallion-Rattle: One of my favorites off MEGAN, the chorus is catchy and as per usual when she lets her flow & charisma lean on the track and that's usually enough for an enjoyable listen.
Latto- Settle Down: A top a pretty pristine beat Latto waxes poetic about being the type of woman a man will settle down and do right by. Catchy tune, its easy listening.
JT-Sideways: JT going solo was bound to happen, she was always the sharpest in the City Girls. JT's so comfortable and in-pocket on this beat. The track oozes confidence as she speaks to never peacing things up with her enemies.
Glorilla-Yeah Glo!: 2024 was a big year for Glorilla and my favorite out of all the bangers she dropped this year was the one she jumped it off with. Yeah! Glo is tough. Love the hook on this and her voice just cuts through.
Doechii-Nissan Altima: Doechii also had an eventful year and "Nissan Altima" is one of my favorites from her. She's animated, has a big personality, has a swift and fluid flow and, is generally witty lyrically. She has a bright future in front of her that is sure to be cultivated at TDE.
Rapsody-That One Time: A vulnerable one from Rapsody about a time in her life that brought confusion, disappointment and, self-reflection. She delves into the trauma that comes from her youth and how it manifested as an adult. It's the kind of deep and open writing that endeared me to her album Please Don't Cry
Laila!-Not My Problem: An infectious r&b tune about not worrying about what people think and say about you and generally reducing anxiety. I can listen to this tune back to back 100x without getting tired of it.
Freddie Gibbs-It's Your Anniversary: Freddie Gibbs can't miss. This track samples Toni! Toni! Tone! and turns that lovely warm-hearted track into a stone-cold street track about celebrating the anniversary knocking off an opp. It's a great flip and conceptually great from Freddie Gibbs. (You'll likely need to listen to this on Youtube)
Benny The Butcher-Pillow Talk & Slander ft Jadakiss, Babyface Ray: A deep cut on Everybody Can't Go, I really like the circular strings on the track and Benny, Baby, Jadakiss go in on those who aren't trustworthy and how if they could do it over again they'd keep a third eye open.
Westside Gunn & DJ Drama-Still Praying ft Conway The Machine, Benny The Butcher, Boldy James & Stove God Cooks: The most essential listen off Westside Gunn's Drama hosted Still Praying. A beautifully dark and gloomy, quintessentially Griselda beat. Everybody who's featured on the tracks goes crazy.
Common & Pete Rock-All Kind of Ideas: Adding to those 50+ adding more heat to their already extensive catalog was Common & Pete Rock both who do a great job of reminding us their minds are always pulsating with all kinds of ideas over a jazzy boom bap beat.
Freddie Gibbs-Origami: This is what I love most about Freddie Gibbs, because between all the drug talk, violence, brutality and, generally menacing demeaner, comes vulnerability, self-awareness and a sense of how much living a certain lifestyle affects your psyche.
Kendrick Lamar-Euphoria: Arguably the best rap song of 2024. A 6-minute demolition of Drake and an exhibition of Kendrick's ability to take different cadences, and vocal inflections, be brutal yet thoughtful and, get to the crux of things.

RASHEED CHAPPELL SHARES NEW SINGLE "ICE BURG (GOOD RUN)" (FEAT. LAMAR TYREE)
Tumblr media
Tri-State mainstay Rasheed Chappell has just shared his new single "Ice Burg (Good Run)" (feat. Lamar Tyree). The emcee also recently announced that his new album NONSTOP, produced entirely by ATL finger drummer extraordinaire and Atlanta Hawks in-game music producer beatsbyjblack, will be out later this month on August 30th. Made during Chappell's recent 36-hour trip to Atlanta, the forthcoming album is an alchemic blend of New Jersey boom bap bar work and the energetic, trap-heavy production ATL has become known for. A soulful track that finds Chappell reminiscing on his life's journey, "Ice Burg (Good Run)" (feat. Lamar Tyree) is bolstered by nostalgic lyricism, ultra-smooth vocals, and hopeful overtones ("No attachment, be free/Do you, I'ma do me").“'Ice Burg' is a eulogy," Chappell explains. "J provided the perfect backdrop to say my final goodbyes to my old life.”
"Ice Burg (Good Run)" (feat. Lamar Tyree) stamps the third outing from NONSTOP following the recent release of singles "No Play Play" (feat. Benngiie), the visual for which surpassed 135K views in just 11 days, and "Haysoos" (feat. SoundsLikeDen). An artist who has garnered attention as a counterpoint to the coke rap wave of recent years and an integral member of the gritty Hip-Hop collective TRUST Gang alongside his contemporaries 38 Spesh, Ransom, Che Noir, Klass Murda & others, Rasheed Chappell is a seasoned emcee who has been hailed for his vivid wordplay and uncanny ability to paint pictures through language within his raps. Since the release of his 2020 collaborative album with 38 Spesh, Ways and Means, Rasheed Chappell has put out a strong run of projects, including the Buckwild-produced Sinners and Saints.
Following 2022's A Portrait Of with Little Vic, Rasheed Chappell returned with The Arcitype-produced project Sugar Bills in 2023, while recent months have seen him release 38 Spesh collaboration tape Checks & Balances. Now with new album NONSTOP, Rasheed Chappell is continuing his hot streak — and showcasing why he's earned his stripes as a key player in New Jersey's underground hip-hop scene.

"Screeeee." Well how did this get here. Cue the jade wiggler crawling towards jade, going to say hi.
How small children keep breaking into her house has been the question she has been trying to answer for over five years now. And unlike their older, more canine inclined siblings, his one can’t even teleport! Yet, here they are. You know what? She isn’t even going to question it. Chances are someone was slacking off on baby sitting duty, so she might as well pick up the slack for a little while until someone realized the Noir wriggler was missing.
Of course, Jade knew what was happening next.
=> Jade: Hug the wriggler and get bapped on the head by tiny hands.

RQ stream notes
So today Rusty Quill streamed! Woo! Alex J. Newall did a creative jam to create an audio drama in... 2 hours? I think? Anyway! I took notes!
The end result was an elevator pitch, synopsis for 6 episodes, and a somewhat fully-produced pilot episode.
It features three main characters (two protagonists and an antagonist) and two entire dogs, in a Noir Western setting.
Enjoy the notes! (Warning: they are long.)
Alex' ground rules -No swearing/anything that'll get him kicked off Twitch -Only original stories -No TMP spoilers or he gets bapped -6-part series with 10min of fully produced audio drama
-Genre - usually do a genre blend (between two different genres) (ex.: romoantic-horror) to allow for more elaborate concepts Genre choice: Noir | Western -Did some brainstorming for keywords in Aesthetics -Quickly going through Wikipedia to research the genres and find points to fill the project guide. Determine how long we have VS what kinds of stories we have time to do -Get a couple characters (3 to be exact) -Elevator pitch -Character bio detail brainstorming -Quick summary of each episode, per season -Cannibalism gave title idea: Eat the Rich (lmao actual cannibal Shia LaBoeuf) -Text between brackets is to the creators' benefit rather than in the actual episode -Pilot needs a Final Complication/hook/cliffhanger in order to get the listener's attention -Alex abuses of speech-to-text (it fights back sometimes) -Writes pilot script -Writes tagline mid-pilot scripting -Once script is over, highlighted parts that are being voice-acted -Started actually voice acting the scene -Silent sound markers (snap fingers - wait a few seconds - snap fingers again. I think this is for denoising purposes) -Occasionally makes voiceacting notes/redoes lines -Moving screams in separate layers. A lot of things he's doing can be done automatically but he's doing it in Audacity manually so we see what's going on. He'll also be taking shortcuts and such that he shouldn't -Silence marker - effect - noise reduction (after getting sound profile for the silence) -(reduce memory load by doing Stereo To Mono while working; do NOT do this for a real podcast ahaha) -Normalize audio -Audacity is a destructive audio program which makes things Difficult (I think Reaper isn't which is neat) -Use fades to hide a cut -One track per scene? -Use scene cuts where a lot is left unsaid -Once dialogue is cut, finds SFX (he has soundbanks - soundbanks good) -Oh No Soundscaping (TM) -And then Music (ft. Upbeat Sax- I mean what?) -Exporting stuff is very frustrating (ft. Alex flappy hands, but angy) -Does artwork during exporting (ft. Alex goat noises) (graphic design is his passion) (he's using Paint) -EQ work! -Exporting -Alex is very good at doing the post-episode monologue
Brainstorm Template: -Key Info *Title (Eat the rich) *Logline (It's dog eat dog in the belly of the new world beast) *Elevator pitch (Grim the gritty outsider with nothing to lose stumbles upon the railway being built none other than Princeton with dangerous labour practices and there's a secret conspiracy that can only be unearther with the help of Elisa Thorne. Grim is shocked but plays along. (This thing writes ITSELF!! -Alex)
[Elon is a cannibal] [Elon is an actual accountable cannibal accountant lmao] [Picked up in the Emerald Mine Disaster, continued bc he likes it & hates the poor].
*Scene 4 (written after scene 5 - lull in action -Grim sitting on Eliza's porch and mulling things over - plays harmonica
Scene 5 -Eliza discovers wife has disappeared and demands Grim's help bc they are an oustsider & closest thing to friend that Eliza has in this messed up city Grim gets a pardon if they help take Elon down. Eliza discovers her wife has disappeared
[HERE, Alex takes more detailed notes and doesn't really pause so I didn't note the dialogue and such. Also Alex's accent is glorious.] [He talked about digging a pit and now everyone in chat is spamming DIG] [The speech to text keeps writing Gunfight Ensues as Gunfighting Shoes.] ["I like Grim. Grim's a fun character." Same, Alex, same.] [Shoutout to Alex doing beatboxing with a weird dog noise while trimming sounds] [plays thunder sound "Ohohoho! I don't care if it's Gothic! My wife has dissapeared KPHHHHHW"] [Alex' frustrated sounds are something to behold. Gremlin noises fr.] [Chat has started singing Hellfire by the Mechanisms] ["I warn everyone, this isn't going to be a thing that is pleasant to listen to"] ["NARRATION!"] [File is huge. There is now a vote in chat, called Chonk? with three options, Chonk, Chonk, and Chonk. The first Chonk won!] [Notetaker's note: I still miss Winston Princeton]
TMP news: "Jonny has pitched to me the most horrific thing ever" [about s3 of TMP?] etc etc (can't share it. WHAT A TEASE >:| /lh)

B.A.P Appreciation
Tumblr media
I remember clear as day a memory I made not too long ago. I was on a bus coming back from an excursion to Chicago,” originally planning to see 24k, the kpop group, but were unable to do so due to the postponement.
On the way back however, in an attempt to sleep as comfortably as possible on a moving bus with limited space, I managed to enter a light sleep--a very susceptible moment of time, I might add-- and caught the amazing vocals from B.A.P’s “Fermata”. A song I previously didn't really listen to because it wasn't the B.A.P I had grown used to.
Since then,  I've been relistening to their NOIR, Rose, and Blue albums with a new attitude and just damn.  They're all incredible and it's such a shame that they haven't yet recovered fully from their “Scandal" with TSE. That's not to say that their music is not still some of most magical shit you've ever heard but that it continues to go mostly unnoticed.
Some may believe they've succumbed to the Kpop Curse and will begin to fade away but I believe they have so much more music to share with the world. i just hope BABYz continue to show their love and support to B.A.P as they continue to impress us with their undeniable talent.

2023 Album Ratings(So Far)
These are some thoughts on some of the albums I've listened to throughout the year. Some of them are just thoughts others are mini reviews.
Owl City- Coco Moon: Solid sound/production, okay vocals, mediocre lyrics, and overall songs. It may work with a more youthful audience. 6/10
Princess Nokia- I Love You But This is Goodbye: This is a good little EP about the ends and outs, ups and downs of heartbreak. As usual for Nokia, it's elastic and expansive. However, there are moments when I find Princess Nokia's vocals to be weak. There are moments when her passion and authenticity cut through. 7/10
Aly & AJ- With Love From: With Love From is a quality summery indie-pop/rock album. There are a lot of tracks to play loud on an open road with the top down in somewhat breezy, sunburned weather. Lovely harmonies and hooks abound. The slower hooks slow things down to an extent. With Love From is not an album I imagine I'll go back to much, but it accomplishes its goal. 7.0/10
Weezer-SZNZ: Winter: Solid effort from Weezer; some catchy alt-rock tunes, nerdy songwriting Coumo's nasally vocals all things Weezer is great at and known for here. Not essential, but good. 7/10
Conway The Machine & Jae Skeese- Pain Provided Profit: A tight and concise project that's a commonly gritty Griselda affair, grimmy and yet soulful and contemplative beats matching Conway and Skeese's ability to be braggadocious and heartfelt at the same time. A solid EP 8.0/10
Logic- College Park: Maryland MC Logic's eighth studio LP is a quality follow-up to his album Vinyl Days, released last year. If last year was Boom Bap Logic, this year is Jazz Rap Logic. It's a good album; there's much soul-baring about substance abuse and avoiding those pitfalls and ideas of getting more true to who he is. There's an 8.5-9.0 album in here somewhere, but lesser tracks water it down. There are seventeen songs here, which is just too many, but ultimately, it's still a solid effort and something long-time Logic fans can get into. 7.5/10
Statik Slektah-Round Trip: The latest LP from Statik Slektah is a dope effort that has a piano-driven and somewhat jazz-rap-driven sound that features a mixture of 90's legends and younger artists, some of which are legends at this point now as well. It's a 20-track project, and the first half is where the most potent tracks lye. All are great, but the best include "Unpredictable" feat Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon and Method Man, "Ain't Too Much Too it" ft Conway, Life & Times ft Joey Bada$$ and "Lion Heart" with Elzhi and Boldy James. Lesser guests and less entertaining beats slow the rest down. All in all, it is a solid effort, particulary for those who love the current crop of underground MCs that have been making noise from 2018 to the present day. 7.5/10
Paramore- This is Why: Paramore is ever-growing; their last LP was a foray into synth-pop, and this one is more of a post-punk album. This album is musically sharp; there are a lot of strong guitar riffs and layers of sounds underneath the mix. Hayley is vocally great at shifting velocities and tonalities during a given song. Lyrically, the album is as content-rich as any Paramore album. It's a tight album, ten great tracks 8.0/10
7XVETHEGENIUS-The Genius Tape: 7xvethegenius is a solid rapper; this project feels like a lyrical exercise for her coming from the drumwork camp. "Brainstorm" ft Conway the Machine is a highlight, as is the storytelling on "Lost on Mars," and then there's the Rome Streets and Che Noir-assisted "Neck Protected". 7.5/10
Conway The Machine-Won't He Do It: Conway follows up with 2022 essential God Doesn't Make Mistakes with Won't He Do It, an album that features more versatile production and different sounds from the lush "The Chosen" to the piano-laden "Monogram" or the R&B influenced Water to Wine" you don't know what to expect track to track on this Conway The Machine album and I enjoy that. This album, while not having quite the depth and soul searching of the previous album, is more celebratory and features an array of flows and skill sets. He sounds comfortable and effortless on this project. Great work 8.5/10
Killer Mike-Michael: Michael is Killer Mike's sixth LP and his most personal and forthright album. The production features some gospel/soul influence that feels classically Atlanta. The album tackles issues he dealt with as a youth, from naively poising the community (Something for The Junikes) to adolescent love mishandled (Slummer) to the impact of losing his mother and grandma. This album gives you a sense of the good and bad that shaped Killer Mike. I also love the EL-P-assisted "Don't Let the Devil" for a more southern-fried RTJ feel. I appreciate what he's speaking to on "Two Days" regarding the prison industrial system and the politics that keep it going. At every turn, Mike is sharp, heartfelt, and thoughtful. The features on the album all come through with good performances from Atlanta pioneers like Ceelo and Andre 3000 to current-day essentials like Young Thug and Future. Michael's an excellent album and a refreshing solo effort, a nice change of pace from Mike's work with EL-P. 9/10
Nas & Hitboy- Magic 2: Nas and Hit-boy continue their run with their fifth album in 3 years and 2nd edition in the Magic series. While the 2021 Magic felt like an exercise in traditionalism, finding Nas rhyming over an updated 90s sound with rhyming up to par with his prime. On Magic 2 Nas finds himself more aligned with modern times; tracks like "Motion" and "Earvin Magic Johnson" sound more car and club-ready than anything on the original Magic. Songs like "Abracadabra" are more thematically aligned than most of what's on the original Magic. The more thoughtful and reflective tracks tucked in the back of the album are the strongest, "What it Really Means", "Slow it Down" and "Pistols on Your album Cover" are all great pieces of work. Par for the course at this point. 8.5/10
Meet me @ the Alter- Past//Present//Future: Meet me @ the Alter is a pop-punk band that has been working toward this moment for a while through a series of EPs and singles that showed a band bustling with pop-punk energy and hooks that only come from a strong appreciation for the pop-punk we came up on in the 00s. Past//Present//Future is the baby of all that hard work. I love the catchy and snarky "Say it to My Face." I also enjoy the chunky, distorted guitars on "Try" a song that speaks to pushing through anxiety and going for things anyway. "T.M.I" is my absolute favorite on the project. It's the best vocal performance from Edith Victoria, the best chorus, and the most well-written tune here. The bass and big chorus on "King of Everything" make for a good close to the album. It's a fun project for the band that leaves plenty of room for improvement and expansion musically and lyrically. 7.5/10
Protomartyr-Formal Growth in the Desert: This is the sixth project from Detroit post-punk band Protomartyr. As customary for a Protomatyr album, you'll get sprawling guitars and walls of atmospheric sound. Also, you'll get lead vocalist and lyricist Joe Casey's passionate vocal performances and great lyrics. "Fun in Hi Skool" is a great song seemingly about the inability to let go of the past to the point where it ruins your present and future. "Let's Tip The Creator" is my favorite on the project; I think it has some of the best guitar playing and drumming. Protomartyr has always been adept at shifting tones and adding sonic layers as tracks progress. With Joe Casey's lyrics being thoughtful yet abstract at times, it invites more and more listens that'll be sure to reward with time. 8.0/10
Dream Wife-Social Lubrication: Dream Wife's third full-length album is much like their previous efforts, a selection of songs where youthful exuberance meets thoughtful contemplations and some righteous rebellion. There's "Who do you want to be?" A call to mobilization instead of stagnation. The title track speaks to being buttered up and being made to get comfortable with getting screwed over. "Leech" is about men, companies, people, etc., who exploit and use women for what they provide—all great tracks. You still get simple punk tracks like "I Want You" or "Orbit," a song about an attraction that almost feels meant to be. Sonically, the band switches between straightforward punk and a post-punk sound, which is more beneficial when trying to get a message across. It's their 3rd straight great album, in my opinion. 8.0/10
Noname-Sundial: Sundail is the third full album by Chicago rapper Noname. Noname is a rapper who has always been adept at rhyming conscious, straightforward, but abstract at the same time. She's an artist who wears her culture on her sleeve and cares deeply about the state of it. She's also someone who has just gotten better and better at rapping over time. She's always had an agile and fluid flow, but this is her least quiet album yet; she's come through with a more substantial presence on the mic and more charisma. Topically, "Hold Me Down" speaks to black people only holding each other down when it's convenient, particularly monetarily. "Balloons" on why there was a musical hiatus for Noname in the first place, which is the exploitative nature of selling black trauma to voyeuristic white people entertained by black trauma. "Beauty Supply" tackles the self-loathing that inherently comes with adapting Eurocentric beauty standards. There's no turn on this album where Noname has nothing to say. There's very little wasted space on the album. Yet there are lighthearted and fun moments here like "Boomboom" or "Toxic." It's a great album that will reward with more listens. 8.5/10
Nas & Hitboy- Magic 3: Nas completes their fantastic run with their third installment in the Magic series Magic 3. To the surprise of no one, It's another high-level project that features excellent production and rhymes from Hitboy and Nas. From the production standpoint, Hit-Boy dives more into a soul sample style here, with many soulful beats and vocals floating in the background of these tracks. Meanwhile, Nas showcases his skillset; rapping well is a prerequisite for him at this point, so it's really about the direction and how the tracks meld together. "I Love This Feeling" track 4 on the project, is the first song that I think is steller on the project; it has a great soulful, almost jazzy sound, and Nas is just sharp and speaking to loving the place he's in. "Based on True Events pt1" and "pt 2" find Nas getting into his storytelling bag, both efforts are vivid. The first one is seemingly a little more personal, with him speaking about investigating a friend's supposed suicide and honoring Havoc of Mobb Deep's brother, who was murdered. Pt 2 echo's a song like "Nigga's Bleed' the late great Notorious B.I.G. "Blue Bently" and "Jodeci Member"are both bangers on the album tracks you could ride in the car too. The album tetters between celebratory and contemplative, and Nas is great at both. The lone feature on the project is Lil Wayne, who shows out his flow is fluid, and he rises to the occasion. It's another great effort from Nas & Hitboy, and in the end, this is an excellent send-off to their run. 8.5/10
