Baneful Rune Chant
So this started as a writing exercise to see if I could rewrite the "Witches' Rune" chant into the "Baneful Rune" which is referenced in Lady Gwen Thompson's "The Rede of the Wiccae" as published in Earth Religion News. (The line being: "Widdershins go by waning moon, Chanting out the baneful rune.") I have never used this to raise energy either in circle with others or by myself, this was originally just a fun challenge I gave myself. However, I feel like we are in a time where binding and similar spell work is very much needed and perhaps this chant could be beneficial in that.
If anyone does try this for energy raising. Please reply and let me know how it goes!
Fearsome night and black-veiled moon, East, then North, then West, then South, Bend before the Baneful Rune, Here we come to cast you out. Water, Fire, Earth, and Air, Chalice, Pentacle, and Sword, Make the poppet with your hair, And bind you tight with our word. Athame, censor, candles, and cords, Bell, and Book of Shadows too, Death upon you with his scourge, And Fates and Furies descend on you. Queen of Sorcery, Queen of Night, Consort who has laid down slain, Lend us all your awesome might, And keep our work from being in vain. By all the blight of the baneful plants, By all the spite of the black sow, Be spellbound by our chants, And rendered thus harmless now!

I’m really surprised by people being worried about the tmi cast dying in TWP… both Jace and Simon have literally come back from the dead, I don’t think anyone in that gang CAN die

She Doesn't Know
pairing: alec lightwood x male reader tags: secret relationship, Alec isn't ready to come out, leads to you being flirted with a lot, jealous Alec, clary being clary, things are changed to fit my narrative better
Alec leaned against the stone pillar in the Institute’s training room, trying to ignore the slight tension coiling beneath his ribs. You were in the center of the open space, demonstrating an elegant series of blade techniques for a group of wide-eyed onlookers: Izzy, Jace, a handful of other Shadowhunters, and of course, the newest arrival—Clary.
There you stood, the picture of confidence and grace. Each arc of your blade elicited murmurs of appreciation from the small crowd, and Alec couldn’t help but feel an all-too-familiar twinge of envy. He watched from a short distance, arms folded over his chest, jaw tight.
You were his boyfriend. His partner. His. Yet, in the eyes of almost everyone else here, you were the Institute’s star: gorgeous, talented, charismatic. Alec had overheard rumors that you were the “ideal Shadowhunter”—the sort of person even the Inquisitor might commend without hesitation. You had been many people’s first crush: from timid recruits who looked up to you as the epitome of skill and kindness, to seasoned warriors who admired your strength and devotion to the Clave.
But none of that changed the fact that you were Alec’s secret—at least, outside of Izzy and Jace. His siblings knew, had known for a while, but it wasn’t something Alec wanted the entire Institute gossiping about, especially not while he was still grappling with how to tell his parents. And definitely not to Clary Fray, the redhead who’d only just discovered she was a Shadowhunter at all.
It didn’t help that Clary had developed an instant fascination with you from the moment she was rescued. Alec suspected it was more than just gratitude. She listened with rapt attention anytime you spoke, eyes shining like you were the only person in the room. And the problem wasn’t just that she was smitten. It was that you, being the gentle soul you were, rarely turned anyone away. You humored her questions, you corrected her stance in training, you comforted her when the nightmares of her mother’s kidnapping returned.
Alec’s heart twisted in on itself every time he saw her giggling at something you said. He couldn’t exactly scold Clary for enjoying your company—she didn’t know you were taken. Worse yet, Alec couldn’t just stride up and put an arm around you to make some blatant claim. Not in front of a group that still assumed Alec’s straight.
“She doesn’t know,” Izzy said softly as she approached. Alec was startled; he hadn’t heard her footsteps. She was wearing her signature confident smile, but it was tinged with sympathy. “Don’t be so hard on yourself.”
Alec sighed, keeping his gaze locked on you. Having stopped your training, you now were talking to Clary, the little girl's laughter echoing through the room, high and bright. Alec could almost taste the jealousy on his tongue. “I know she doesn’t know,” he grumbled, shifting uncomfortably. “I just—It feels like he’s everyone’s favorite. Even with Jace—”
“Jace is his parabatai,” Izzy interjected teasingly, lifting a dark eyebrow. “Don’t tell me you still think he's making a move on your boyfriend. When they drew those runes, he basically gave up those feelings.”
Alec heaved a silent breath. “It’s not…I know Jace respects our relationship. It’s just—he’s my best friend too, right? So it feels strange that whenever I look for him, or for my boyfriend, they’re off training together, or exchanging some inside joke.”
Izzy placed a comforting hand on Alec’s arm. “You’re not used to sharing, but you’re going to have to. You can’t lock him up in your room away from everyone else.”
Alec shot her a glare, but a reluctant half-smile tugged at his lips. “That wouldn't be such a bad idea, actually. But, seriously, that's not what I’m trying to do.”
“I know,” Izzy said, voice gentler. “Talk to him. He’d want to know if you’re feeling this way.” Alec glanced from Izzy back to you. He knew she was right; you’d pick up on his mood soon if you hadn’t already. You always had a knack for sensing when Alec was troubled. Or jealous.
Later that evening, Alec found you seated on one of the long benches in an alcove behind the Institute’s library. Dim overhead lights cast dancing shadows along the shelves. You’d folded your arms on the table in front of you, scribbling notes on a mission report.
He hesitated in the doorway for a moment, admiring the way your hair fell over your forehead, the focus etched across your face. Of course people gravitated toward you—you were breathtaking, inside and out. Alec’s chest warmed at the reminder that, for now, your heart belonged to him.
Taking a quiet breath, he approached and gently rested a hand on your shoulder. You looked up, a brilliant smile lighting up your features the moment you saw him. The corners of Alec’s mouth tugged up, and he sunk down on the bench beside you.
“Hey,” you said softly, setting aside your pen. “You okay? You seemed a bit off in training earlier.”
He shrugged, then shook his head, deciding to be honest. “I’m just…” He swallowed. “A little jealous, I guess.”
Your eyebrows arched in surprise before softening with understanding. “Of Clary?”
Alec’s mouth parted, but he hesitated. It felt foolish to say it out loud. “She doesn’t know about us,” he finally admitted. “And I can’t exactly blame her for…flirting.” His lips twisted wryly around the word. “But it drives me crazy.”
You slid closer, your thigh brushing his. A comforting warmth radiated between your bodies. “I can see that.” Your voice was gentler than ever. “I’ve been trying to discourage her without being mean, but she’s persistent.”
Alec let out a breath he’d been holding. “I don’t want to let my jealousy show. And I definitely don’t want anyone else figuring out my…preferences before I’m ready.” The words still felt awkward on his tongue, but it was the truth. “It feels like all eyes are on us, you know? You’re…well, you’re you.” He almost laughed at his own phrasing. “People watch you. They notice who you talk to, who you train with, who you spend time with. If they notice me acting possessive or something, questions will start.”
You reached for his hand and squeezed. “I understand. There’s a lot riding on you, on your family name, on how the Clave sees you.” Your voice lowered. “I just want you to be comfortable. I don’t want to hide, but I also don’t want to force you out before you’re ready.”
Alec’s chest felt tight. Gratitude washed over him in a gentle wave. “Thank you.” He closed his eyes for a moment, focusing on the reassuring feel of your hand in his. “I’d never want you to hide either, but—yeah, it’s complicated.”
“It is.” You brushed a thumb over his knuckles. “I care about you, Alec. That’s not going to change, no matter who else needs a training partner or who else tries flirting.” A soft smile tugged at your lips. “And if Clary presses too hard, I’ll find a tactful way to let her know I’m not interested.”
Heat rose to Alec’s cheeks. It felt absurd that a single line could chase away so many of his doubts. You had a way of cutting through his insecurities with your kindness. Every word felt like a reaffirmation of your loyalty to him.
For a second, Alec let himself imagine a future where the entire Institute knew the truth—where he could step forward and simply stand behind you during training, wrap an arm around your waist without worrying about the stares. Where Clary could look at you both and see just how uninterested you were in her. One day. Soon, maybe.

“Try it on me,” Alec said unexpectedly. “I could do with some fearlessness.” He slid his jacket off, tossed it over the piano stool, and crossed the room to stand in front of Jace. “Here. Mark my arm.”
Jace glanced over at Clary. “Unless you think you should do it?”
She shook her head. “No. You’re probably better at actually applying Marks than I am.”
Jace shrugged. “Roll up your sleeve, Alec.”
Obediently, Alec rolled his sleeve up. There was already a permanent Mark on his upper arm, an elegant scroll of lines meant to give him perfect balance. They all leaned forward, even Magnus, as Jace carefully traced the outlines of the Fearless rune on Alec’s arm, just below the existing Mark. Alec winced as the stele traced its burning path across his skin. When Jace was done, he slid his stele back into his pocket and stood a moment admiring his handiwork. “Well, it looks nice at least,” he announced. “Whether it works or not…”
Alec touched the new Mark with his fingertips, then glanced up to find everyone else in the room staring at him.
“So?” Clary said.
“So what?” Alec rolled his sleeve down, covering the Mark.
“So, how do you feel? Any different?”
Alec looked considering. “Not really.”
Jace threw his hands up. “So it doesn’t work.”
“Not necessarily,” Luke said. “There might simply be nothing going on that might activate it. Perhaps there isn’t anything here that Alec is afraid of.”
Magnus glanced at Alec and raised his eyebrows. “Boo,” he said.
Jace was grinning. “Come on, surely you’ve got a phobia or two. What scares you?”
Alec thought for a moment. “Spiders,” he said.
Clary turned to Luke. “Have you got a spider anywhere?”
Luke looked exasperated. “Why would I have a spider? Do I look like someone who would collect them?”
“No offense,” Jace said, “but you kind of do.”
“You know”—Alec’s tone was sour—“maybe this was a stupid experiment.”
“What about the dark?” Clary suggested. “We could lock you in the basement.”
“I’m a demon hunter,” Alec said, with exaggerated patience. “Clearly, I am not afraid of the dark.”
“Well, you might be.”
“But I’m not.”
Clary was spared replying by the buzz of the doorbell. She looked over at Luke, raising her eyebrows. “Simon?”
“Couldn’t be. It’s daylight.”
“Oh, right.” She’d forgotten again. “Do you want me to get it?”
“No.” He stood up with only a short grunt of pain. “I’m fine. It’s probably someone wondering why the bookstore’s shut.”
He crossed the room and threw the door open. His shoulders went stiff with surprise; Clary heard the bark of a familiar, stridently angry female voice, and a moment later Isabelle and Maryse Lightwood pushed past Luke and strode into the room, followed by the gray, menacing figure of the Inquisitor. Behind them was a tall and burly man, dark-haired and olive-skinned, with a thick black beard. Though it had been taken many years ago, Clary recognized him from the old photo Hodge had showed her: This was Robert Lightwood, Alec and Isabelle’s father.
Magnus’s head went up with a snap. Jace paled markedly, but showed no other emotion. And Alec—Alec stared from his sister, to his mother, to his father, and then looked at Magnus, his clear, light blue eyes darkened with a hard resolution. He took a step forward, placing himself between his parents and everyone else in the room.
Maryse, on seeing her eldest son in the middle of Luke’s living room, did a double take. “Alec, what on earth are you doing here? I thought I made it clear that—”
“Mother.” Alec’s voice as he interrupted his mother was firm, implacable, and not unkind. “Father. There’s something I have to tell you.” He smiled at them. “I’m seeing someone.”
Robert Lightwood looked at his son with some exasperation. “Alec,” he said. “This is hardly the time.”
“Yes, it is. This is important. You see, I’m not just seeing anyone.” Words seemed to be pouring out of Alec in a torrent, while his parents looked on in confusion. Isabelle and Magnus were staring at him with expressions of nearly identical astonishment. “I’m seeing a Downworlder. In fact, I’m seeing a war—”
Magnus’s fingers moved, quick as a flash of light, in Alec’s direction. There was a faint shimmer in the air around Alec—his eyes rolled up—and he dropped to the floor, felled like a tree.
“Alec!” Maryse clapped her hand to her mouth. Isabelle, who had been standing closest to her brother, dropped down beside him. But Alec had already begun to stir, his eyelids fluttering open. “Wha—what—why am I on the floor?”
“That’s a good question.” Isabelle glowered down at her brother. “What was that?”
“What was what?” Alec sat up, holding his head. A look of alarm crossed his face. “Wait—did I say anything? Before I passed out, I mean.”
Jace snorted. “You know how we were wondering if that thing Clary did would work or not?” he asked. “It works all right.”
Alec looked supremely horrified. “What did I say?”
“You said you were seeing someone,” his father told him. “Though you weren’t clear as to why that was important.”
“It’s not,” Alec said. “I mean, I’m not seeing anyone. And it’s not important. Or it wouldn’t be if I was seeing someone, which I’m not.”
Magnus looked at him as if he were an idiot. “Alec’s been delirious,” he said. “Side effect of some demon toxins. Most unfortunate, but he’ll be fine soon.”

Okay, so I've just noticed something, and now I've got a ask...
Could it be possible for Magnus Bane - as a Warlock whose father used to be a Fallen Angel - to be able to use a stele to draw runes on Alec's body?
Because yeah, beyond the fact that Alec hasn't been seen with a flexibility rune drawn anywhere on his body before he started dating Magnus...
WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD HE PLACE IT ON AN AREA OF HIS BODY THAT WOULD REQUIRE AN INSANE AMOUNT OF FLEXIBILITY FOR HIM TO BE ABLE TO REACH IN THE FIRST PLACE?!?!?!
Unless you happen to be a contortionist, and/or have extremely hyper-mobile shoulder joints, please do me a favor and try attempting to draw or trace anything there using either your right of your left hand. See what I mean?
Once you've got that flexibility rune activated, perhaps it would be relatively comfortable to do so.
But without it?! It's like one the worst possible spots one could think of using to put it!
Jace's flexibility rune has been put somewhere stylishly practical that's easily within reach for him, at the very least.
But Alec's?!
I can only think of two explanations for this:
Magnus is the one that drew the rune there himself.
Someone else - most likely Jace - did it for him.
And I can't tell which one is my favorite!
Because, while part of me can't help but think how incredibly cool it would be for Magnus to be able to draw and activate runes on Alec's body...
I kinda love the idea that, at some point, right before Alec was going to head back to Magnus' loft, Jace just decided to grab his stele, lift Alec's shirt, and start drawing something on his left shoulder blade!
Alec: [Trying to wiggle his shoulder out of Jace's grasp, and bring his shirt back down.] Jace! What the Hell are you doing?
Jace: [Trying to force his parabatai to stand still.] Just relax and stop moving, alright?! Trust me about this, you'll thank me later!
Alec: [Reluctantly does as he's told, trying to ignore the stinging sensation.] I've still got a feeling I'm going to regret this.
Jace: [Laughs, as he finishes drawing the new rune.] Oh no, you won't! You're going to love this tonight, and so will Magnus!
Alec: WHAT?!
Jace: [Smugly pushes Alec's shirt back down, and gives him two small pats on the shoulder.] There. All done! It should have a stronger effect and last longer, too, since I'm the one that drew it!
Alec: [Turns towards his parabatai, eyeing him carefully.] Jace, what rune was that?
Jace: [Shrugs.] Flexibility. Oh! [Starts fumbling with the edge of Alec's shirt again, at the front this time, looking for something.] Where'd you put that stamina one again? I know it's around here somewhere...
Alec: [Glares incredulously at Jace but, to his own surprise and against his better judgment, doesn't attempt to stop him.] Seriously?!
Jace: [Triumphantly] Ah! There it is! [Activates the stamina rune, before letting go of Alec's shirt, stepping back, removing his own, and handing his stele to Alec.] Say, would you mind activating mine, too? I've got a group reading at the Book Club tonight that will probably end up late.
Alec: [Sighs and rolls his eyes, grabbing the stele to start activating the same runes on Jace's body.] You're impossible...
Jace: I think you mean caring, thoughtful, and the best parabatai in the whole Shadow World that's looking out for his big brother!
Alec: Uh-huh... [Still pretends to be annoyed, but there's a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth as he finishes to trace the stamina rune.] How large is that group reading tonight, by the way? Want me to activate the endurance and agility ones, too, while I'm at it?
Jace: [Beams back at him.] Okay, you win. You're the best parabatai.
I'm also amused at the thought of Jace or Izzy just discreetly walking behind Alec to activate that large "calm anger" rune through his clothes whenever he's having to deal with some idiot from the Clave, and they notice his patience is just about to snap!
Still, that "calm anger" be a rune that someone else drew there, and that's typically activated by another Shadowhunter, is something I can deal with just fine!
But FLEXIBIILTY?!?!?! How?! Why?! How?!
"I have a flexibility rune, but I'm not flexible enough to use it myself!"
Good job, Alec!

I might have posted this one already but I'm not sure.
Beware of an oddball thought process : (headcanon/plot bunny)
Shadowhunters and downworlders - but warlocks in particular- were supposed to be partners and work together to protect the mundanes. Runes used to be given to the shadowhunter partner by the magic of their warlock partner. (Or a random warlock, if the shadowhunter partnered with another downworlder.)
But gradually, the shadowhunters parted from this alliance, discovering steles to apply the runes themselves.
The burning sensation and pain however is an after affect of not having a warlock apply the rune, as it should have been.
The knowledge of this could absolutely be lost.
But maybe the group comes across a really old immorta,l who had been around and seen how things deterioated. Or they find a script with the spell that makes the shadowhunter runes.
And they try it out and it works, and it doesn't hurt and it's really powerful like this.
#magnus bane#alec lightwood#malec#shadowhunters tv#malec prompt#assembled characters#shadowhunters and downworlders were always supposed to work together#steles replaced warlocks but the runes are not happy with that arrangement hence the burning and pain#warlocks were supposed to apply the runes for shadowhunters#goes together with another oddball thought I had about the first time Raziel was summoned and shadowhunters came into existence#because wikipedia said: summoned.#not prayed to; but summoned.#which makes me think he was summoned by a warlock#which makes me think that johnathan shadowhunter was friends (or more) with a warlock#and before shadowhunters existed#it must have been the downworlders who kept the demons at bay#and johnathan wanted to help his warlock friend (or possibly more than a friend)

A prompt for youuuuu m’lady~
33. “Keep your hands over your ears, do you hear me? Even when the noises stop. Don’t listen.”
For Malec?;)
Have a great day!!
Don't Look Back (Read on AO3)
Alec knows it’s his fault they’re here in the first place. He got cocky, or maybe careless… no, careless isn’t the right word. Reckless, but reckless in the face of trying to save the man he loves. He should’ve trusted that Magnus could handle himself, and should’ve listened when Magnus told him to run.
Now Alec stands within a cage of magical making, one he cannot escape unless the warlock who created it either takes down the walls or dies. Magnus stands on the other side, helpless to break it. Alec left himself an easy target, and now he’s being used as the one bait Magnus can’t walk away from.
“Magnus, please. Just get out of here and save yourself.” There are sounds from down the hallway, voices and footsteps, and flashes of magic that Alec knows won’t be good for either of them. “I’ll be fine.” “You’ll be dead,” Magnus says, his tone a bone-chilling mixture of casual and cruel. “And I can’t have that.”
“Magnus, I-”
“Shhh,” Magnus hushes sharply. “Alexander, I need you to listen to me. Close your eyes, and keep your hands over your ears, do you hear me? Even when the noises stop. Don’t listen.”
“Magnus, what are you going to do?” Alec asks.
“What I need to,” Magnus replies. “Please, Alexander. If you’re ever going to listen to me, listen to me now.”
There’s a desperation behind Magnus’ words that convinces Alec to close his eyes and bring his hands over his ears without any further hesitation. Not listening to Magnus is what brought them here in the first place, and he isn’t going to make the same mistake twice.
The sound that reaches Alec’s ears is nearly deafening, even through his palms pressed against his ears as hard as he can manage. There’s a light so bright he can see it beyond his clenched-shut eyelids, a flash of light red that brightens the blackness. The temptation to look is stronger than anything Alec’s ever felt before, and as the air around him begins to whip and pull at his clothing he almost does it.
Then it’s silent.
Alec takes a deep breath and releases the tension in his body ever-so-slightly, but keeps his hands over his ears and his eyes shut tight.
Even when the noises stop.
Alec wonders how long he should stay like this. The longer the silence draws out the faster the panic begins to rise, turning his stomach into knots and tightening his chest as his breathing quickens. What if Magnus is injured, or dead, and Alec is just standing there with his eyes shut doing nothing…
A gentle hand on Alec’s shoulder makes him jump, eyes snapping open with a split-second determination of whether the hand is a friend or an enemy. When his gaze lands on Magnus’ face mere inches away from his own, his first emotion is relief.
When he sees the way Magnus’ eyes droop with barely enough energy to remain open, his legs shaking until his knees buckle and he drops to the pavement below.
That’s when Alec finally takes in the other bodies on the ground. A quick glance shows nearly a dozen of them, and Alec can’t tell if they’re all warlocks or not. He also can’t tell if they’re unconscious or dead, and at this particular moment, he doesn’t want to know. If he thinks hard enough he’ll piece together that the barrier around him is no longer active, so at least one of them is dead.
Deep down, Alec knows he doesn’t care, not while Magnus is clearly hurting.
“Let’s get you out of here,” he says instead, focusing on escaping while he can.
Alec knows he’ll have to ask later but for now, he does his best to look past his surroundings, pretending he still can’t see or hear anything as he supports Magnus the best he can on their way out, never once looking back.

be careful you guys, there are sickos out there that memorize ciphers, alphabets, and writing systems for fun. and they LIKE it
#I'm sickos#that's actually a big part of the reason why I started learning japanese#I memorized the httyd runes and would practice writing in them when rtte was still airing#and i used to make up ciphers and stuff in church when i was little#i kinda thought i was more or less alone because in working with japanese learners i quickly discovered that most of them are like#nooo not three alphabets!!! or they're like i hate katakana! kanji is the bane of my existence!!!#and i was like yeah understandable i guess#but then when the linguistics/spanish professor started japanese 101 i asked her how the syllabaries were going#bc those are typically the first big obstacle people run into#but she very enthusiastically was like oh i love it!!! I've already memorized them all. here give me some words to write!#and she grabbed a piece of chalk#and i was like oh. she's a sicko. a freak for writing systems just like me#i should've guessed from the way she had the entire ipa memorized but i guess i just assumed that was a normal lingust thing#pickle pontificates#linguistics#japanese#i guess
