10 Thrifting tips
I scored big yesterday wanted to share some tips. These will be homeware tips as I don’t thrift a lot of clothes - it’s my Mum and Best Friend who have exploding wardrobes. I hope this post will be helpful for anyone setting up a home or wanting to inject some vintage personality into their home.
1) Go often. I can not emphasize this enough. I hit my favorite store at least once, if not twice, a week - it has really high turnover. My second favorite store I hit at least every other week, not so high turn over so it’s okay to go less often. Learn the stores in your area that have high stock turnover and go to them as often as you can.
2) Never go to the thrift store looking specifically for a trash can or a pet bowl etc. Go with an open mind and look for something that may not be designed for the thing you need but it can serve that purpose. I have an umbrella stand that serves as a trash can and candy dishes to feed my cats from - they have a punch bowl for water at the back door since that’s the bowl I always forget to fill so I just leave them a huge bowl and don’t need to fill it as often. You can often find something that works even better than a purpose designed object and it just looks cooler.
3) Use the fancy glass and crystal. The clear glass shelves are always packed because people think it’s fancy and never use it. You can pick it up for a couple of dollars. I eat noodles out of fancy glass bowls, I feed my cats from them, I use them for soap dishes, I store earrings and lipsticks in them on my dresser, I use them as drip dishes under pot plants. Glass is durable and easy to clean.
4) Look for new in the original packaging. Yesterday I picked up $125 of brand new un-used bed linen for $30. How do I know how much it was worth? It still had the original prices on it (I don’t know who buys a $75 pure cotton quilted valance and never even takes it out of the packaging but I’m not gonna complain). You often see full sets of stemware or other glassware in their boxes. Gift boxes full of unused toiletries, scented candles that have never been burned. Don’t buy something just because it’s new in the box - that way lies having cupboards full of as-seen-on-tv crap. But if it’s something you’ll use then grab it.
5) Baking equipment. Thrift stores always have plenty of baking equipment. I’d never buy cookie sheets, muffin tins, cake tins, cooling racks or rolling pins new. I know I can always find these things at thrift stores and often better quality than I can afford new. If you’re really into baking then you’ll occasionally come across specialty tins that you couldn’t really justify buying new (how often are you actually going to bake madeleines or friands?) but there’s no guilt picking them up from a thrift store.
6) Trade up. Especially when you’re starting out you may not be able to afford good quality stuff so you just have to make do with whatever you can afford. I can’t say that you absolutely will walk into a thrift store and find something top of the line but, if you go often, eventually you will come across something that’s better quality than the one you own. You may not be able to justify buying a brand new chef quality frying pan when you have a perfectly good pan at home, but you can absolutely justify buying a chef quality pan when you find one at the thrift store. And donate your perfectly good one - someone else will need it.
7) Collect something. When I’m in a thrift store I have my eyes peeled for pink Arcoroc glassware, mini peacock chairs to sit my plants on, 80s pastel ceramic plant pots, anything seashell. Building up a collection of thrifted items is loads of fun. It’s the thrill of the hunt and the rush when you find the perfect thing to add to your collection. Having a few fun collections of vintage stuff scattered around your home gives it individuality - no one else is going to have that exact collection.
8) Solid wood furniture. Don’t look at the color of a piece, that’s the easiest thing in the world to change. Look at how sturdy it is, and believe me solid wood is sturdy. If you’re considering a piece of furniture rock it, give it a good shake, if it wobbles forget it unless you have some woodworking skills. Look for soft spots or lots of little holes that would indicate rot or borer/woodworm. If it has borer is there a lot? It’s fairly easy to treat with an injection spray if there’s not too much. Solid wood will last a lifetime, it’s easy to make over if you get sick of it, it will survive house-moving and general wear and tear way better than flat pack. And you end up with a house full of unique pieces, not the same Ikea look as everyone else.
9) Can it be cleaned? Inevitably some things from thrift stores are gonna be a bit yuck. There is no point buying something if you are not confident you can clean it. I’ll sometimes do a spot clean, just by rubbing it with my finger wetted from my water-bottle, to see if the grime will come off. I keep an old toothbrush specifically for the seashells and mini peacock chairs I collect because they tend to come covered in the dust of ages and the best way to clean them is with a dry brush followed by a rinse. Barkeepers Friend is wonderful stuff for getting tarnish off metal or cloudiness from glass. Dishwasher powder is great for cleaning out any vessel that you can’t scrub the inside, 1 part powder to 2 parts water and swirl it around. If you find something you love but you’re not sure you can clean it, Google it! Honestly I find it incredibly satisfying to buy something really grimy (and cheap because it’s grimy), get it home and clean it up to sparkling new.
10) Share the love. I have my eyes peeled for things I collect but also I’m on the lookout for things my friends and family collect. I’m looking for blue hand-made pottery for my Mum, peach lustre glass for my best friend, swans for my cousin, lovely old copies of classic girl’s books (Anne of Green Gables, Little Women etc) for my friend’s daughter. It’s as much of a thrill as finding the things I collect but there’s that extra good feeling of knowing I’ll make someone’s day by finding them that awesome vintage piece.

Get to know me or something?
No idea what to put in this but uhh it seemed like people wouldn't hate it at least so here you are.
My name is Kira, I'm from Seattle, and I'm in both high school and college. I'm studying to be a neuroscientist and I'm going to cure prion disease through a combination of enzyme therapy and glial inhibition (because I have a phobia of prions, mostly).
I'm the oldest of three siblings by a fair amount. My whole family is as weird/quirky as I am but in different ways.
My family has a bassett hound i once sort of broke my foot trying to bathe and a sheepdog i once got bits of table stuck in my leg trying to put to bed. Their hearts are usually in the right place. (No pics on phone or I would attach.)
I draw a lot with a lot of things, I paint, I animate, I sculpt miniatures with clay, I make models on the computer, I use a pottery wheel (at school I don't have one lmao), I woodburn, I bead, I'm learning guitar (again) and basic woodworking, I sew, I write, I have forgotten how to knit three times, I'm teaching myself coding, I bake, etc, etc. If it's an art form I've probably tried it.
When I was twelve I spent a weekend taking down every book in the house, reorganizing them according to genre and author, assigning book drops, and making a map of the Highly Organized System (HOS). No one else bothered to learn it. I spent a lot of time fixing it.
I have some health issues I don't totally understand but aren't like, the kind that kills you or paralyzes you, but are the kind that makes you kind of miserable all the time.
There's a lot I shouldn't do, but the two things I can't do are act and blow up balloons.
I have like five graphic novels I'm working on but on the backburner because i have the attention span of a gnat
I first read wuthering heights at thirteen and have been low-key obsessed with it ever since for two reasons: potential redemption arcs that were not completed and Heathcliff's completely inexplicable behavior. I've been trying to figure out why he made such weird choices ever since and I have also been writing fics with predictable endings. (I haven't finished a fic, though.)
I think this is a decent length so I'll stop but feel free to ask questions if you want to?? I have never done this before obviously and have no idea what the protocols are so I'm genuinely sorry if this breaks unwritten rules

Saw this and realized that I hadn't done one in a bit.
Otp Questions - Cute
01. Who yawns and then snuggles up to their partner?
Wendy. It's one of the ways she signals Dipper that he's been working to much, without flat out telling him.
02. Who likes to press their nose against their partner’s neck while smiling?
Wendy again.  And if the mood's right she may even nip his neck some.
03. Where do they like to go stargazing?
When they're at the Shack, it's her old break spot. If they're not at the Shack, probably
04. When the other person is away, who likes to sleep with a stuffy that their partner got them?
Wendy. Dipper finally won her the Panduck at a School fair during Wrndy's Senior year.
05. What song would they duet at karaoke night?
They have been known to do Monty Python's 'Lumberjack Song'.
06. Who kisses the inside of their partner’s palm?
Dipper, he jokes about pleasing her lifeline so that she lives forever.
07. What song would they passionately sing in the car together?
Daydream Believer by The Monkees. It was a favorite of her mother and became a favorite of Wendy as well.
08. What would they bake together at 3am in the morning, in their pjs and listening to their music while non stop giggling the whole time?
Peanut butter cookies.
09. Who can’t stop laughing while the other has their arms wrapped around them and kissing their face all over?
Dipper, even after all this time he can't believe he got this lucky.
10. Who hypes the other up while they try on new outfits?
Wendy. Dipper still prefers practicality to style, so sometimes Wendy has tobplay up how well the outfit looks (and maybe how good it'll look off of him) in order to get him to buy 'Fun' clothes.
11. Where is their favourite place to be alone?
The roof of the Shack or the roof of their converted warehouse.
12.What type of class would they go to together? Ex- pottery, art, music, ECT.
She has talked him into going to a woodworking class (mostly to keepup her skills), a meditation class, & a yoga class. He's talen her to some language classes (Russian, Korean, Japanese, etc) which she has actually excelled at, & a baking class (back when they first started dating, he wanted to learn the best way to make a birthday cake for Mabel for their next birthday).
13. Who makes the other breakfast in bed?
This is something they both seem to like doing when they have the time & wake up before the other one.
14. What cute nicknames do they call one another?
Dip or Dork (done affectionately) for Dipper and Princess (since she is a lumberjack princess in his eyes) for Wendy.
15. What do they say to one another when they first wake up?
A lot of clinging, kisses, & wishing they didn't have to get up for the day.

Art & Craft
Craft is a skill. A craft is perfected, or is a talent that has been mastered. A craft can be made by hand. A craft can be an artistic talent, or a creation. Examples of crafts are pottery, glass crafting, crocheting, sewing, knitting, etc. Crafting requires more hands-on activity. A craft can be taught. Certains crafts have principles that must be done a certain way. Crafts could also include woodwork, scrapbooking, embroidery, or even baking. Craft and art can both be something beautiful. A craft could be a profession that requires talent and skill. Art may not require a learned skill. Both craft and fine art have design.
Art is a creative skill. It requires thought, an idea, and meaning. An example of art could be a painting, dancing, music, etc. There are elements of art like line, shape, color, texture, space, and form. Art is expressive and doesn’t have to be a physical piece of work.
The differences between art and craft have changed over time. More techniques are discovered, materials are more available, and there is more technology that assists with craftwork. Fine arts are created for aesthetics while crafts could be functional objects like vases for example. Crafts are taught all over in schools and especially on the internet like on Youtube. You could just google how to create/ craft something and easily learn how to do it. Sculpting is art and a craft at the same.
Tumblr media
The differences between art and craft are controversial when considering if a piece is a craft or art. For example, a plush smore made by Jamie Jo. She creates the piece out of fabric, paint, and clay. She created it by hand and incorporates sewing, painting, and sculpting. The purpose of the piece is probably just for decoration. It has no function besides but has aesthetic value. Jamie Jo uses different types of art to create this piece. Some would argue that it is art because the purpose or intent was for decoration. Some would say it is a craft since it involves physical materials and skills like sewing. People mainly use sewing for materials or clothing but Jamie Jo uses sewing for decorative purposes. I think there is no definite line that draws the difference between art and craft but they both require creativity and skill. By using mixed media, artists can incorporate art into craft. Crafts have changed overtime by including styles and influences of art. An example of this is graphic design. Adding a decorative element to the craft integrates craft and art. An artist named Izziyana Suhaimi creates embroidered drawings. In the background there is a woman drawn in black. Another colorful layer is sewn on to make it look like clothes or accessories. This piece also didn’t have a function besides decorative purposes. However, embroidery is a skill that is learned and has certain rules/procedures for doing it. I think art and craft have fewer differences and are more incorporated together modern day than in the past. Resources allow people to create pieces that don’t need to serve a function, and are creating decorative pieces instead; or can have aesthetic value and a function at the same time. One viewpoint is that art must have an intention, meaning, and artist. While craft has to be something physical. Another viewpoint is craft has a function while art doesn’t have to have a function. A third viewpoint is that craft is art as long as it is decorative. Some argue that a craft can be artistic, and can be a piece of art while art is not a craft. The view point I agree the most with is that a craft can also be a piece of art but I also think that art can he a craft as well. It takes an artist, creativity, emotion, and skill to create a craft I think. I feel like nowadays more artists don’t tend to follow traditions since culture (in the U.S) is so diverse. I think artists create pieces that have multiple purposes and have different styles.
Tumblr media
Technology helps influence artists. Websites like pinterest, twitter, and tumblr help circulate ideas. Now there is such this as food art, like sculpting cake or adding food dye to make food look more beautiful. Cooking can be a craft that incorporates art. Technology also allows crafts to not be material/physical objects animation or design. I think maybe artists try to make regular day things that have a function for example, a vase, and try to make it more decorative. I watched a video of a lady trying to make decorative pasta. That is incorporating craft and art. Maybe modern day people are more fascinated by things that are eye catching and out of the ordinary. That requires more creativity and beauty.

“Year-Round Camp” for your kids a few days a week—would you do it?
“Year-Round Camp” for your kids a few days a week—would you do it?
Hi everyone! If you are a stationary homeschool family, would you be interested in sending your homeschooled kids to a “year-round camp” a few days a week? I’m thinking about a business to teach/practice cooking, baking, woodworking, crafts, pottery, gardening, etc. in an environment that promotes teamwork and collaboration while still allowing parents to be the main source of learning academics and values.
Is this something you would send your kids to if reasonably priced (less than daycare) for ages 6-16? Or are these things that you teach yourself and wouldn’t need?
