ash's august 2024 reading round up
find all the books and fics i read (or didn't read...) this month under the cut with a link to the synopsis and my reviews/ratings attached :)
this is just for fun! i'm not a professional, i just like to read <3
booklist:
The Au Pair Affair by Tessa Bailey (18+!)
• review: ugh. this book was so bad lmao. which does pain me to say because i historically have really enjoyed bailey's writing. and i was super excited for this one because i love hockey romance too! but something about it just felt... off to me. perhaps it was the mmc, burgess' protectiveness of this woman he met one time months ago or how much he thought about how they weren't right for each other or maybe i just didn't like him as a character in general. i also didn't like the fmc, tallulah all that much either; i just found her kind of... allowing herself to be a product of her own situations throughout the entire book. i am sympathetic to her previous bad experience with her ex boyfriend and how he treated her, but i also believe there are better ways to draw attention to the fact that "burgess is a strong, violent hockey player and she was abused by her ex, how could they ever be right for each other?!?!" like... does every woman in a hockey romance have to experience this in order to make this dichotomy known? i just would have liked some more originality on that front i don't know. i also think there was a huge missed opportunity for lissa, burgess' daughter, to have helped bridge the gap between the two adults. as tallulah becomes her part-time caregiver while burgess is away, the two of them really hit it off - i think they had the best dynamic in the entire book and i wish there was more about them and how seeing his daughter and the woman he liked getting along inspired burgess or something. but overall. just a pretty flat story to me. i didn't feel the chemistry, i didn't like how burgess treated tallulah like he owned her, and i didn't like that sooo many times each of them thought they weren't right for each other. why? because it was fucking true! there's a reason you're both feeling this! the best part of this book was the ending chapters where they attend the wedding of the mc's of the first book in this series. i was very excited to see josephine again, i loved her so much. the barnes + noble exclusive bonus chapter was literally the best thing in the book but doesn't make the book itself better in anyway as not everyone got to read it lmao
• rating: 2/5 hockey skates
fic list:
1. Assorted works of @selangkir <333
• Continuation of their Jo/Lucy fic!
MY GIVE A FUCKS ARE ON VACATION
i truly cannot get enough of jo and lucy and your beautiful mind... the dynamic these two have going is already making me giddy and i'm so obsessed with your take on this alternate universe where the boys leave instead of jo! the background you're spinning for lucy has also got my attention in such a grip, the scene at jett's party when she's thinking about her brother and how they used to have these kickbacks with all of his friends. the way we don't learn much about her family in btrtv left so much room for expansion, and i just love the direction you're taking it! AND of course the perfect continuation of our GTR au... god, the kendall and katie scene was so funny to me i love how Sibling they really are. the expansion work on kendall is just fascinating too and running a donation campaign on top of that?? augh! tysm for sharing your work w us <3 (and the private post you sent me with your wips... oh augh i cannot wait for what's in store in the future!!)
2. Assorted works of @ceruleanmusings :))) <3
• Big Time Audition - The Masons
.10

Blood Diamond; Year Three
as always, i ADORED your work this month... lord... i thought about big time audition - the masons for like an entire week. the way each girl is introduced and the way it fits them so perfectly had me feeling like i was there in the house with them, tracking through room to room to see what each of them were doing and how you chose to share them with the world. not only that, but micky watching james' audition literally made me fall out of my chair AHH! i just love them so so so much; the 10-12 blurbs were so wonderful. blood diamond year three was also an incredible work - i loved the direction of choosing to have it be purely conversational but it was still packed with so much raw emotion. the last line also felt like a sucker punch to the face i don't think i'll ever forget it.
3. Assorted works of @partiallypearl / @praetoravila !! <3
hold tight
but we're evergreen
her sense of style, it really rocks
jelisa kiss blurb
cause you got me, and baby, i got you
i tried not to face the truth
be my bad boy (be my man)
oh, i leave quite the impression
our human loneliness
show me your colors
ok.... the way i have been so olivepilled this month is just insane. i'm obsessed with her, i love her, she is my special perfect girl. thank you so much for feeding us with all this good olive content this month - i might die without it. everything about her story, from the introduction with her and her sister (wren... loml) and the first time she meets logan, to their ongoing friendship --> relationship dynamic has me SCREAMING. i love the story you are weaving and i'm so thankful to be able to see it unfolding in real time. she DOES leave quite the impression! the two of them make me illlll. ty for letting me send you a million lolive songs and tiktoks this month and thank you for letting me steal her for the wag au!! it will happen again (affectionately). and your lucy blurb was so captivating as well; your take on her life events leading to her arrival at the palm woods was fascinating. i love her so much! your writing only solidifies this hehe
4. Assorted works of @icegirl2772 <33 !!
• Take A Shot In The Dark Chapter 15!
We Do (But Friends Don't)
girl... you should have seen my jaw DROP at the end of this chapter... oh you got me sooooo so sosoo so good. i was throwing parties in my head... screaming... and then i was crying 😭 A DREAM??? so impactful to my health and wellbeing i stg. i cannot wait for the james and neil show down i am so ready for it... and the new addition of we do (but friends don't) was lovely. god i can't get enough of james and kaelyn!! <333
5. Assorted works of @inkameswetrust :)) !!! <3
The Windowsill
The Windowsill (pt. 2)
The Windowsill (pt. 3)
hiii bestie welcome to the reading round up... your kames fic had me screaming and crying and throwing up (affectionately) even if i accidentally started on the second chapter and not the first hehe. the dynamic between james and kendall is so sweet - james being sooo thoughtful and surprising?? hello?? i a puddle on the floor - and the dynamic you created between kendall and his family in the second edition was so cute. the knights are so special to me and i love that you chose to highlight them (even during kendall's james freak out) :)) the third edition was so cute as well! logan and carlos cutting off their conversation... teasing kendall about what happened... omg. the two of them make me so giddy and this fic is making me collect my own butterflies in my stomach hehe and the classic kendall fumble at the end had me rolling... tysm for sharing! i love your work!!!

6. Are there any fics from others you reread all the time?
instead of being like, i read my friends' fic a lot! i am going to throw some older and non-hockey fics that i find myself going to back to frequently into this answer. i've read all of these numerous times over numerous years and they always make me so happy
Friday Night Arrives Without A Suitcase (hrpf, danny briere/claude giroux) Apres moi le deluge (generation kill, brad/nate) Mr Webster's Wager (kj charles society of gentlemen, ash/francis) Loss and Light (geishaverse, alina/nikolai) (this is by a friend but not like a friend who is on tumblr whose fic i rec all the time so it’s different) A Month of Sundays (hrpf, gabe landeskog/erik johnson. i think i have a pdf somewhere where the embeds aren't broken lmao) Wants and Needs (hrpf, jeff carter/mike richards) Something Old (hrpf, danny briere/claude giroux) you’re in my blood like holy wine (game of thrones, jon/sansa) A New Mode of Living (band of brothers, speirs/lipton, misc background pairings) Don't You Shake Alone (generation kill, brad/nate)
29. Share a bit from a fic you’ll never post OR from a scene that was cut from an already posted fic. (If you don’t have either, just share a random fic idea you have that you don’t plan on getting to.)
okay here's a real deep cut. back in the year 2013 i wrote almost all of a nate/jo soulbond fic that i never finished and never will for complicated personal reasons. anyway here's the opening
You're not supposed to bond this young. You're not. Of course, Jo can tell himself that as much as he wants, it won’t change the fact that he can feel Nate’s thoughts tugging at him from across the ice, sharp and precise. It’s not like hearing Nate’s voice in his head, nothing that clear, but Jo can tell what he’s thinking about—open passing lanes, whether he can stickhandle past the defenseman, Jo approaching down the wing, just visible from the corner of his eye. Nate stumbles over nothing and loses control of the puck.

Heaven's Beans
Posting 8th September 2023!
Fic by Mydestielbabies_67 Art by squirrelofcelestielintent
Rating: Explicit
Summary: Meeting Castiel Novak changed his life. Castiel was unlike anyone Dean had ever met before. He was kind, gentle, and had a deep understanding of the struggles that came with being an omega, even though the man was an alpha. Castiel was also patient, allowing Dean to open up at his own pace and never pushing him to reveal more than he was comfortable with. As they grew closer, Dean found himself sharing things with Castiel that he had never told anyone else. It was like Castiel could see through all of his defenses and truly understand him. With Castiel, Dean felt like he could finally be himself, without fear of judgment or rejection.
It was too bad Dean didn't date alphas.
Tags: Non-con drugging, background Gabe/Sam, mention of Benny/Andrea, A/B/O Dynamics, Alpha Castiel, Omega Dean, Alpha Sam, Omega Gabriel, Ash, Jo Ha, Alpha Charlie, Alpha Benny, Omega Ellen, Pamela Barnes, Missouri Moseley, Jody Mills, Friends to Lovers, Drugging, Police Investigations, Dean and Castiel need to use their words, Unrequited Love (or is it?), Medical issues, Mentions of infertility, Miscommunication, Love Confessions, Getting Together, Interrupting Moose (well Sam but same difference), Blow Jobs, Shower Masturbation, Heat Sex, Mating cycles/In Heat, Mating bites, Anal fingering, Rimming, Anal Sex, Knotting, Top Castiel/Bottom Dean Winchester, Mentions of mpreg in the epilogue
Excerpt: Below the readmore
However, it wasn't the smell of pastries that caught his nose. Dean sniffed subtly, and the faint smell of honey-infused whiskey and something sweet lingered in the air. The smell got stronger the closer they got to the counter, and Dean realized where it was coming from. It was the man behind the counter. Dean would place money on the man being an omega. Alphas would never be caught dead fronting a coffee shop, their macho egos wouldn't be able to deal with that.
He was tall, with dark hair poking out under the ridiculous-looking cap on top of his head and piercing blue eyes that looked like they were made just to look at Dean, who couldn't help but feel a little self-conscious under his gaze. The man smiled at Dean, revealing straight white teeth, and Dean tried to concentrate on the menu but found himself lost in the man's eyes again before noticing the five o'clock shadow that perfectly dusted his chiseled jawline, which Dean thought he wouldn't mind feeling between his thighs….
He must have been staring because Sam nudged him. "You gonna order something or just stare at the barista?"

hi jo!!! all of these emoji thingies look so cool it’s hard to pick just one but could i have a 🔐 with late night texts because i hold this story very dear to my heart and it’s so so special 🥹💗 love youuuu
hi babe, thank you so much for sending an ask in. i fully appreciate you!!
🔐 late night texts (i feel im gonna run out of these facts about this series hahah)
im not sure if this is fun, or if I've said this one before, and if i have I'm so sorry. but the entire airport chapter was written in one sitting, to one single song on loop. i'd had a really bad day, and i'd put on superstore (the tv show) and watched the final. and the song for zula by phosphorescent plays in the background.
anyway, i was emotional, took myself for a shower and didn't realise i had clicked the song on spotify, so it played on LOOP during my shower. and it was between shampooing and conditioning, i saw the entire thing play out. turning it over the rest of the shower until i dashed out of it, and just voice noted myself the entire freaking thing. from start to finish. i then obviously dried myself. told my friend ash, and then proceeded to put the song on and i sat and wrote it all out.
and it was perfect.
it was one of the few chapters of the series (or ever) I've seen play like a full movie from beginning to end, and not tweaked from the moment i put it down (outside of spelling and grammar). and if there was ever a moment i hope shows my talent, i hope it's that one, because it physically just came out of me.
and i love it.
also the song isn't a happy one, but there's something about the melody combined with the scene from the show that must have made me so hopeful. and i think that's why in my original version, the airport was the final destination and meeting was the last chapter.
but, thankfully i changed that hahaha
[i feel you of all people will appreciate this so much]

Bonus points if there are illustrations or quotes to justify your answers. ✨
Wow, thank you Anon! (I mean... "Anon"... 👀) You really want to read all this?!
8. Who has the worst luck?
Zak, maybe. He's adamant in staying out of trouble, but trouble keeps on finding him!
13. Do/Did any of your characters have large ears they had to grow into as a kid?
Ulrik... Nah, they're still big. 🤡 So, it would be Altair!
14. Are any of your characters nonverbal?
Ash probably, and Juliva.
21. Do any of your characters have heterochromia?
Ash! She's my only character whith heterochromia, and it wasn't even intended at first. But, writing her background story and the part where she's gravely wounded during a hunting accident changed one of her natural green eyes to a blue-ish hue.
22. Do any of your characters have someone named after them? Or are they named after someone else?
Altair isn't the only "Altair" branch in his very extensive family tree, and also Mereel (one of the kids rescued by the Mandos on Aq Vetina in "The Foundlings") has obviously been named after Mand'alore Jaster Mereel.
29. Are any of your characters nameless? (In that there is no legal record of them existing, they just don’t have names in canon, or history remembers them but not their name?)
... Not one that I talked about here, but he's only known as "Sarge".
32. Do you have any characters who are twins?
Yep! Jo and Josh, Merry's cousins. And Guten and Borg, Ash's adoptive brothers (she's the adopted one).
37. Did any of your characters have a fever they almost died from as a child?
Ash again! After the hunting accident, she almost died while being treated because of said fever. Luckily, Walter and the Crone were good at healing people... 😰
44. Are any of your characters overshadowed by other siblings? Or have parents who clearly have a favorite? (ex: Boromir and Faramir)
Vivian, by her baby sister. She loved her, but so did her parents and she felt left aside. And sadly, she didn't imagine it even though she might have exaggerated it all in her child's mind...
48. Are any of your characters apprentices?
Ash was, Zak too... And Elara, somewhat. But also the main character of a fantasy story with dragons I wrote long time ago.
50. Are any of your characters Good Dads ™?
Neal, even though he isn't around as much as he should, but Korben too. I think Din's biological father (and mother!!) was exactly what Canderous would praise against stupid Dantooine farmers whinging about not knowing what to do to protect and save their children, and Korben made a point for Din to remember them and their courage daily. Korben had a son and a foundling before Din, so he knew already what loss and pain could do to a child and how to handle it... even though after his son and foundling left the covert, he wasn't too eager to take another under his care. Until he saw that silent kid mesmerized by the controls of his ship... 😊
68. Are any of your characters intimidatingly beautiful?
Personally, I'd say Juliva and Litti (because Ana Torv and Gugu Mbatha-Raw are just gorgeous 😍). But none has been written to be seen or recognized as such. I'm not sure Isaac (Juliva's brother in arms and now husband) even noticed how pretty I think she is, and Ela just loved how nice and caring Litti was with her.
74. Are any of your characters associated with flowers?
... none that I've ever talked about here either. (She's called Lily.)
75: Do any of your characters wear glasses, sunglasses, goggles, or monocles?
Elara wears goggles, Leona wears glasses after a long, tiring day and Vivian and Merry wear sunglasses anytime they need. No monocles but I feel like Anton could fit in here too, because of his stupid gunner helmet 😝
77. Have any of your characters had to kill a friend?
I... don't think so?! 😲 But I have a gnawing doubt now.
84. Do any of your characters have gaps in their teeth or are missing teeth?
Vespera had a gap between her front teeth when she was a child. But not anymore.
92. Have any of your characters started and/or led a revolution?
Vivian started a revolution, somewhat. But if not her, then Ash. Not exactly a revolution though. More like raids?!?! It was against bandits and highwaymen so I'm not sure it can apply as "a revolution" though...
96. Which character is The Proudest ™ of their kids?
Crahl, for starters. All the kids he trained are his pride and joy. But Elara too! She's so proud of Jakem even though he's not her son, and now she's so proud of Tip-yip too!!! She doesn't understand SHIT about all that Jedi stuff but she doesn't care all too much either, so... What she sees is that he knows a lot of stuff, and understand even more!! And that's all she needs. 💖
100. Are any of your characters queer?
Well, Elara? Her most loving and lasting relationship was with a woman.
108. Are any of your characters dogs?
Astro and Nerio. The first is [REDACTED]'s dog and the second is Altair's.
114. Do any of your characters insist on going by their fullname rather than a nickname?
Hmm. I think I have more characters doing the very opposite of that and preferring to go by completely different names like Zak using the name of his dead best friend, Ulrik being known under specific names by his snitches and other contacts, Vivian trying not to trigger Lawrence's script by using her college nickname/username in the park, Elara having a heap of nicknames and monikers given who's talking to her because she can't bear to hear people she barely know call her "Ela" like her parents, brother and Din did...
Well! Now that I think of it, Elara would be one of them! She'd rather be called "Elara" or even by her family name than to be called "Ela" by strangers!
115. Do any of your characters have an honorary father figure?
Ash could count Walter (the grumpy asshole who taught her how to become a demonist) as an honorary father figure, I guess?! 🤣
120. Do any of your characters have PTSD?
Sadly, a few yes. Vivian and Ulrik were my only shell shocked characters, and Vespera has been added to the roster now... because of awful things she recently saw and had to run from during one of our game session! 😭
126. Are any of your characters on good terms/still friends with an ex?
Elara! Litti is still a very good friend of her.
132. Who is the precious cinnamon roll?
Answered here! But I could add Mereel too! This kid is the sweetest there is in all the galaxy.
133. Have any of your characters ever been caught in a fire or explosion?
First, there was Zak.....
"There was a mosquito in the basement... so I threw a match in the powder kegs."
And now, little spoiler for upcoming chapters of Lost and Found, even though he isn't exactly *my* character:
146. Were any of your characters disowned or abandoned by their parents?
Ulrik, kinda. His mother helped him out of the house because the tension with his *cough* 'father' *cough* was getting out of hand. So she caught him as he was planning to flee on his own, gave him a few aquilas, and kissed him farewell and good luck. 🥺
153: Do any of your characters embody the spirit of a flapper? (Bonus points for style and or lifestyle)
A "secondary-ish" character in my Westworld series: Marge, a colleague of Vivian's. Also Adelaide and Leona.
163: Are any of your characters autistic? (If so, do they have special interests and what are they?)
... according to @hathorik , Elara would be... ?!?! Even though she hasn't been written to be.
She loves numbers and languages, but I don't know if these interests are any special! Speeder bikes, maybe???
165: Who is a “girls just wanna have fun” character?
Marge again! She's boisterous and a very big mouth but I think she's hidding a lot of anxiety behind her behavior... (PUN INTENDED)
169: Are any of your characters married to the sea?
Does Elara count? Not exactly the sea but space... Litti can tell that you can't keep Ela on the ground for too long.
172: Do any of your characters hold a grudge against someone?
Answered here!

Ground Control to Major Tom
read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/w45EPuf by MrsShinigamiDaiko Dean Winchester dreamed of being a mechanic all his life, but he never thought he would end up working as a mechanic for NASA and going into space. He is thrust into his first ever space mission after a strange lunar body, dubbed Luna-b I, mysteriously appears in Earth’s sky. Teams of astronauts scramble up to the permanent lunar base and begin analysis to determine if the blue orb is any threat to mankind. Most of the first team is sent home after a few months, nearly all of them having fallen ill with devastating cases of space sickness. As time goes on, it becomes clear that something altogether unnatural is going on here. Dean feels like he’s losing his mind as he and his crewmates also begin to succumb to sickness. He races to figure out what could possibly be the root cause. Is Luna-b I really just some weird, deep space rock that got caught in the Moon’s orbit by chance? SUPERNATURAL REWATCH, 2x02: “Everybody Loves a Clown”
-God, that is a creepy ass clown.
-You all need to be a lot more concerned about her seeing a clown on the side of the road.
-Sweetie, why the fuck would you let a clown you saw at the carnival and the side of the road into your house?!
-The first hunter funeral of the series. Damn... still can't believe they killed off John so soon.
-Dean, I know you're lying, and you need to tell Sam because that secret is going to eat you alive!
-Dean, it's understandable for Sam to be worried about you. You bottle shit up and never tell anyone how you're feeling and it's so unhealthy.
-Oh, so it's been a week since John died?
-Dean stop making a joke out of it. BE HONEST!!
-Dean's reasoning is right, but I know it's partially excuses so he doesn't have to deal with John's death.
-ELLEN!!!!!!!
-Oh my God, seeing the boys driving this old ass van is so funny!!
-ASH!! JO!!!!
-Damn that was a solid punch, Jo.
-The way Ellen knows that John is gone, purely based on the fact that Sam and Dean are there and not John is really telling.
-Jesus, how is Ash so sure that he can figure this out in 51 hours? That's nuts.
-So, Ellen became a hunter because her husband was a hunter?
-Of course, Dean immediately starts flirting with Jo.
-I will admit though, Dean and Jo would have been really cute together.
-The introduction of Sam's fear of clowns.
-Sam: "At least I'm not afraid of flying." Dean: "Planes crash!" Sam: "And apparently clowns kill." Hey! Dean's fear of flying is completely valid. I mean, Sam's fear of clowns is valid to, but Dean's is just a little more understandable.
-I mean, you let your kid come in there with a video game, how are you surprised he's not getting scared by this creepy maze.
-Oh, you really shouldn't have told your son that clowns are your friends.
-With all the shit they see, Sam still getting spooked in that maze is so funny.
-The fact they have to follow this family home to keep them safe from a killer clown is so ridiculous, but very on brand for them.
-What does this clown do to these kids to make them let him in their houses?
-Dean isn't wrong about how Sam being suddenly "obedient" or taking into consideration what John would have wanted them to do is a weird change for Sam, but I also feel like he's just projecting and turning his own anger on Sam.
-Rakshasa? I mean, it all fits, but how do we kill it, if that is what this killer clown is.
-I don't think it's Cooper. That seems too easy. I think it might be the blind guy. He's been on the boy's case since they got there.
-Oh shit, not Dean going to the blind guy.
-He's not even blind!
-Of course, they'd have to fight this thing in the maze!
-Oh, the pipes from the organ, nice thinking Sam.
-Dude, the strobe effect in this maze is fucking with my eyes.
-I like they just randomly have some other hunters in the background to show that other hunters actually come to Ellen's bar.
-Sam: "Oh, yeah, I've got to, uh... I've got to go... Over there... Yeah." Smooth Sam. Real smooth.
-Do not touch his computer, Dean.
-Hey! If Ash says he went to M.I.T., he went to M.I.T.
-Sam opening up about how he's really feeling about John's death and then telling Dean that he knows Dean's not okay is such a good scene. Jared and Jensen's acting is really good.
-Dean taking his anger and grief out on the Impala is such a good scene because it genuinely feels like he's taking it out on John because I know Dean thinks of John whenever he's around the Impala. Dean is so angry and since he doesn't know how to express his feelings, this is the only way he feels he can get them out and it's just heartbreaking to watch. Jensen did so good in this final scene.

tum mere paas raho by nayyara noor plays in the background
like a plea almost,
and i sit here in my fully lit apartment on a friday
to write about so many things,
haven't written in a while.
but out of all things,
to specifically write about the dark van yesterday,
Mahin and Salar sat on the front in seats, sarah and i sat in the back
the van, shaky, and dark
Mahin and Salar talked about a million things
including rent and work and finances and
what not,
sarah and I, sat, and vibed to music together,
we lit a cigarette,
i could not see where it was ashed
the van fully dark,
it took a break and gave me a jerk,
harsh.
jolly and silly, they say,
salar, on the driving seat, laughed and apologized
are you okay he asked
I am, I said.
jolly and silly. goofy.
a pretty fucking dark van.
on the way back, once we had picked up sarah's bed and mattress,
we put the mattress in the back of the van,
and sarah and i sat on that,
i lied down and closed my eyes for a while.
mahin and salar's conversations got louder and louder,
silly and jolly,,
sarah would give me a soft look every now and then,
like a silent check in, holding me close,
i closed my eyes.
"guys mahnoor is sleeping," sarah said trying to get them to speak lower.
"oh sorry" salar said, resuming to be as loud.
"jab koi baat na banaye na banay,
jab koi baat na chalay,
jis ghari raat chalay
jis ghari sunsaan siyaah raat chalay,"
says Nayyara Noor now
aurat kee poorani ghalti hai,
andheray karnay waalon say paas rehne ki iltaja karna,
"tum mere paas raho"
"mere qaatil, mere dildaar, mere paas raho"
jahan andhere hon wahan roshni ki khwaahish rakhna,

This van would remain dark, and all I wanted was

the only comfort being Sarah's silence presence,
sisterhood finding its ways,
"tum mere paas raho" aurat nay hamesha ghalat insaan ko kaha hai,

lekin kabhi us mard kay sayay me nahi jo

just like the fucking jerks in the dark fucking van. hamaray wujood kee is mein koi jaga nahi.

Name: Dylan Walker
Age: 21 in season 1
Gender: Not really
Pronouns: They/Them
Sexuality: Yes
Personality:
Dylan is fiery, cocky, and confident on the outside, but it doesn’t take much to make them falter. They’ve had to be independent from fresh out the womb, since they and their siblings were sort of packed in like sardines. They were a bit of a troublemaker in highschool (mommy and daddy didn’t give them any attention so they had to seek it out themselves) but they weren’t exactly good at making friends, so most of their time was spent smoking weed and pretending to be at soccer practice. They are sarcastic, loud, and they have a bad habit of striking first and asking questions later. It is inconveniently easy to get a rise out of them, and the truest satisfaction they can find is by drawing out a reaction from those around them. They don’t particularly care whether that reaction manifests as a laugh or a punch.
Appearance:
They are toned, brunette, and have a sort of roguish smile that has charmed many a lady in bars all across the country.
When it comes to clothing, they favor earth tones--warm browns and greens, primarily. They dress warm, and favor the standard Winchester outfits, so they own quite a lot of flannel. Their usual fit goes as such: tanktop, then flannel, then a camo jacket on the top, and green or brown or gray cargo pants baggie enough to hide a gun and several knives. They wear some variation of the same thing every single day and it hasn’t occurred to them that switching it up might bring some spice to their dangerous but repetitive life.
Background:
Family? When asked, they don’t have one. When drunk (or, more likely, high) Dylan might let slip that they come from a big, Irish Catholic household in the suburbs of Missouri. The kind of household with so many children that the less gifted slip through the cracks. They might make an off-handed comment about caring for little siblings when their mother was busy, or their familiarity with sharing a room. They might even mention their pastor father, but things would probably get quiet after that. They don’t like to talk about the time before they met Ellen, Jo and Ash. All that’s behind them, now.
At the age of 20, they sold their soul to a crossroads demon as a cheap way to get their tits chopped off, and thus launched into hunting in order to find a way to live on after their ten years are up. They found the Roadhouse about a year before the boys did and was drawn to Ash in particular, as a fellow long-time stoner with transgender swag. His death made them realize that, whether there is hope for them or not, they must use whatever time they have left hunting and killing the supernatural.
Flaws:
Pride. Dylan hates looking stupid and, with the exception of a few close friends, they will always take jabs personally. They find asking for help nearly impossible. If their ego is bruised, they can become unbearable, pouty and frustrated (and this childish reaction leads to shame, so they can easily end up in a bummed loop).
They also have an insatiable sweet-tooth. They can’t drink tea or coffee without at least four spoonfuls of sugar and they used to steal ice cream bars from their school cafeteria every other day. But their sugar habits make them feel childish, so they try to keep their cravings to themself.
Strengths:
Being brought up in an intensely conservative area did have its perks. Because of their father’s paranoia, Dylan was great with a handgun even before they started hunting. They were also a girl scout, and so they know how to construct a small fire and very little else.
They’re also very good at enduring pain. This stems primarily from their excruciating periods, which began early and would hurt so much that they would be bedridden for two days minimum every month. It was a curse, but now, as a hunter, Dylan is a little grateful that they became so familiar with agony so early on.
Fears:
Besides death (which they do fear, no matter how hard they try to brush it off), Dylan’s afraid of a handful of things. When they’ve had friends, they’ve feared for their safety. After the Roadhouse went up, their anxiety about the people they care about got a little out of hand, which manifested in an alert on their laptop set to notify them whenever a suspicious case came up within fifty miles of her home.
Fun Facts:
They can’t sleep without getting high first. A typical night for them looks like wrapping up the research on their current case around 2:00 am and then rolling, smoking, and passing out. With the exception of the occasional day off (never by choice), they’ve been smoking at least once a day since their junior year of high school.
Potential Interests: Crowley, Lucifer, Balthazar, Gabriel
Sexual Preferences:
In all their sexual escapades, Dylan has always been the dominant one. Like, touch-me-not levels of dominant. They don’t even enjoy it, it just hasn’t occurred to them that sex is supposed to feel good, that they should like it. Consciously, they don’t want to relinquish power to someone, but a part of them they refuse to acknowledge craves being put in their place. Being taken care of, used, whatever. They’re too prideful to ask for it, and their hook-ups are never more than drunken one-night-stands anyway, so the trust they need never gets established but, with time, perhaps they will find what they’re looking for.
Dylan is also, unfortunately, attracted to danger. They need a partner whose confidence outweighs whatever vitriol they’d throw at them, someone they can push and tease who will return that mischief tenfold. They need someone whose power is evident enough that, ultimately, they can’t question it. Unfortunately, that sort of person also annoys the shit out of them. Getting properly fucked remains an eternal struggle.

HC: Background&Bullets II
- Jo: Dancing Through Life
It’s a secret part of Jo’s life and history - her love for dancing - and had started from Ellen’s plan to make her little, spiritful daughter’s weekends full while waiting for her daddy to get home. It was an old studio space above the sketchy real estate agent in town that a collection of little girls in pink leotards would line up and do plie upon pirouettes for the hours of the morning. There was no air-conditioning, and Jo would soak through the black t-shirt and stripey leggings she wore after Ellen misunderstood that no uniform requirement didn’t mean that there wasn’t a social uniform. By the time Ellen realized - staying for a few extra minutes rather than dropping Jo off at the door - it had already been three months and her little girl was past worrying about what she wore, and standing out from the crowd.
Jo actually kept up with the sport - and she would kick anyone who said otherwise for quite a while in the back of the knees - well into her teens and right until she left for college; though not quite as frequently as she once did. Not that Ellen or anyone else was aware of it. Paying for the classes with her pocket money and from cash slipped out of the register, Jo would run into town, complete a class, and run back home as a sort of chance to avoid or escape the stresses and fights back at the bar for a few hours. The only person who had any idea was Ash, and he’d cover for her regularly if asked what she was up to.
It wasn’t just the formalized styles like ballet Jo liked though. She would shimmy her way around the bar as the night wore on - lining up her favorite songs on the jukebox and swinging her hips as she cleared the tables off and wiped down surfaces. She would have her CD player set up and playing tunes all day when she’d hide away pretending to do school work. She would lay out on Ash’s bed as he had thrash screaming out of his own radio while he clicked away at some work and she would kick her feet in the air to whatever tune she could pick out of the noise. She would gently sway when Rick’s hands wrapped around her waist and he would laugh about her being such a girl. Jo would swing her way about the bar in Duluth when no one was watching, she would bop her head in time with the radio on her way driving back home, and she would sometimes find herself spinning in time to the swell of music between chores - so long as no one was watching.
- Jo & Ash: Brotherhood
It took a few months for them to really warm up to one another - too many broken relationships and too many lost relations and too many issues between the both of them to make bonding all that quick. But their relationship turned from two people living in the same house and who would play poker or pool and laugh with each other but barely knew much of either’s lives the night of Jo’s first-ever date.
Ash had been working behind the bar with Ellen, covering Jo’s shift after she’d rather quietly and embarrassedly said she had said ‘yes’ to going to see a movie with one of the guys from her automotive class. He’d had curly hair, that was all Jo had said about him, and Ellen had been ecstatic at Jo being open to doing something with anyone not connected to the hunting community. Ash had been ambivalent - being 22 and not interested in the actions of a 16-year-old and her romances after how much trouble Jo got into the previous year with the whole Gordon Thing. He regretted the ambivalence when he picked up the bar’s phone after it had chirped through two unanswered calls back-to-back while he and Ellen had been swamped. Jo’d stood in the lobby for thirty minutes, tickets in her hand and a Diet Coke waiting until the movie started and she spotted the guy and his friends walking in laughing, not once looking in her direction even as she waved.
The drive back from the cinema, he’d pulled off to the side of the road and then turned the car around and sped through to the other side of town after noticing Jo’s tears. That moment was when his view shifted from annoying teenager to his annoying teenage sister in his heart. Jo’s view shifted from the weird geeky guy renting out a room to her weird geeky guy as he’d taken a baseball bat from the back of his truck and proceeded to smash every window, mirror and chrome fenders before peeling back towards the roadhouse as Jo laughed so hard her tears changed from sad to happy.
After that, their entire friendship had changed, and Jo would spend half her time at home curled up at the end of the other’s bed as he worked, or sitting in the back of the tray of his truck, or going shooting out the back with beer cans each time Ash would finish one. He’d become quickly the first person Jo would go to about anything, to share anything, to confide in. And Jo became the number-one-person in the MIT-dropout’s life, his very best friend and his biggest supporter when anyone gave him crap for his mullet or his fashion sense, his choice in drinks or if it took a little longer than expected for him to get some information to them. Jo was his fierce protector in her world of hunters, and Ash was her fearless confidant and supporter in the world of civilians.
- Ash: Story of a Genius
Growing up a genius in a trailer park was his life. Ash never expected to achieve more than a low-paying job, a motor home of his own and a wife and three kids. Nights spent yelling at each other over whose fault it was they were still in the trailer and his own love slowly turning to resentment and simmering rage. A few police drive-bys over the noise, a DV record and his wife sneering at him as he was put in the back of a wagon when she’d hit him first. The story his father had played out before him was what he’d expected growing up, and it wasn’t until one teacher realized his potential that he started to expect anything more of himself. He ended up at a prestigious school that required uniforms and had a coat of arms stitched on his blazer, a school that gave him a full ride and he buzzed his hair short to avoid looking out of place. A school that pushed him and he soon found himself graduating two years early and in a place with another full-ride scholarship at MIT - working on computer programming and robotics for fun.
He finished his four-year degree by the time he was 20, and for a lack of anything else to do, a lack of ambition or idea or goal, Ash stayed on for a doctorate. He was halfway through his thesis when the realization that he hated what he was being turned into - the way he spoke had changed, the way he looked so different from his friends and family when he returned home in Summer break to see his father drinking away his life, the way he no longer connected or understood the world he’d grown up in and come from, how he hadn’t had an independent thought since he was 10 - and that was when he pawned his CD player, his array of computer gear and tech aside from his laptop, and his sedan. He packed a change of underwear, his laptop, and his wallet up in a backpack and bought the first bus ticket out of the city.
He hadn’t expected it when he ended up in the interchange in the midwest. He hadn’t expected the first guy to pull over as he walked down the side of the road to give him a lift even further into nowhere. And he definitely hadn’t expected to be kicked out of the car on an interstate surrounded by paddocks and nothing else as he’d pointed out a problem with the man's logic that there was something inherently weaker about women than men. He’d walked for several miles before a dusty car park and a worn Roadhouse appeared before him, and the moment the perky young blonde pulled out a chair across from him, he had found somewhere he could relearn who he was.
- Jo & Ash: Weekend Wastelands
The last two and a half years of Jo’s teenage years spent at the Roadhouse were pretty much the same over and over. On weekdays she had to go to school. A waste of time and a waste of energy and a waste of opportunities that she could be out on the road learning something or at the Roadhouse learning more and reading more. Nights were spent faking her way through homework for all of half an hour before either bussing tables, working behind the bar pulling beers and pouring spirits, deep frying onion rings and French fries, and flipping burgers while Ash would tug at the back of her apron or flick her with his own apron ties, dancing about the bar once the regulars had filtered out and she would occasionally be spun about with a laugh as the brother-from-another-life would catch her hands and twirl her between tables before they’d get shouted at to get back to work.
But on the weekend - Jo could kick back, relax, and run wild until the bar would open.
She would go for a run, she would practice her shooting, she would take her bow set out, she would even go rabbit hunting. She would lie under the clouds pointing out strange shapes as she’d pass a joint back to Ash. She would play Duck Hunter and beat his ass every time. She would learn how to throw a punch and how to get out of a hold, all with her trusty brother acting as the attacker and laughing every time her fist would hit his cheek all the while until she’d hold a pack of peas against his face. She would call Gordon from the phone line in Ash’s room while he would stare on disapprovingly, but never turn her in to her mother and would cover for her when she’d run out to see the other and always offer an ear for her to whine about how unfair it was she couldn’t be out on the road like the other - that was until he stopped calling after her seventeenth and she got the rude wake up that maybe her mother was right.
And after work, every single night of the week, Ash and Jo would sit out the back porch while the genius smoked a cigarette and the teen would lean her head against his shoulder, talking about anything and everything, before she’d finally be convinced to go to sleep with a promise to stay up later the next night.
- Ash: The Big Brother Chronicles
There was the time he smashed the jerkoff who left Jo waiting - that was the first time Ash had really felt like his old self, like the little troublemaker who grew up having to fight for scraps and respect, like a man who was supposed to protect his mother or his sister from trouble. That had been a wake-up for him, and Ash had started growing out his mullet that very day as he remembered one of the older boys who lived two trailers over that had always been the strongest and most protective brother in the park; wanting to emulate that spirit the moment he picked the usually stoic or cheerful girl in tears.
Then there was the time he saw that fucking hunter, that fucking old disgusting pervert, kiss Jo goodbye that one time. It was the first time Ash had realized there was more than idolization between the two of them, and partnered with the information Ellen shared before the man came around again, he knew there wasn’t anything else to do for it. Ash faked an email from Jo - when he knew she would be away on a college tour that weekend with Ellen right after her seventeenth birthday - and when the man arrived, Ash broke his nose, his knee and five bones in his hand. Ash got a broken rib for himself in return before the other hunters and regulars in the bar managed to separate them. Recovering with the remains of his current stash, the computer geek had reconfigured Jo’s emails so none of them would ever get through to the other hunter and none of the older man’s would get through to her.
Next had been a slew of other hunters - young guys (more appropriately aged than the other one) but still not nice guys, ones that thought his little sister wasn’t worth much more than a quick roll in the hay out back or in the backseat of their car - that never got past a few flirtatious comments here and there before they found themselves with a friendly arm around their shoulder and a hissed explanation of just what could happen to them if they dared try anything with the perky blonde that smiled so wide at everyone. Then the schoolboys started up, sneaking around the Roadhouse with fake IDs that they’d even paid him for thinking that they wouldn’t be turned around by Ellen and her wicked grins, Ash didn’t need to step in on those but he definitely made it clear when he would slide the fakes to each of them through the crack of his truck window that if they tried to touch his sister they’d be eating gravel in no time.
But the easiest job of his, the easiest support he ever gave to his chosen sister, was to don ill-fitting suit pants, a white shirt and slick his mullet back against his head and slide the pretty corsage of bluebells over her wrist as he was the calm and steady rock to support her throughout the night. They’d found out the morning of - after she’d been the one to buy the tickets and even dragged him shopping two weeks earlier to buy the periwinkle blue ball gown of tulle - that it had been a last prank by the boys in her year. The last joke to get back at her for being ‘frigid’ and a ‘prude’, for having her ‘big brother destroy Pete’s car’, for having the gall to be disinterested in them even without the interventions from Ellen and Ash to dissuade them making a first move. Ash had glowered something fierce, driven into town and bought the first suit that fit him, and returned to drag her out in that pretty blue dress with her dusty combat boots and his leather jacket swimming off her shoulders out to the event. They’d stuck their fingers up in their ‘couples’ photo, while Ash had spun her about the dance floor in a swirl of tulle and leather. They’d spiked the fruit punch, Jo had rested her head on his shoulder during a slow song, and they’d ditched out on the rest of the evening before it hit 9pm after Jo had kneed the boy who asked her on the dare so hard in the balls that the boy had crumpled to the floor. They spent the rest of the night in a paddock between the lights of town and the Roadhouse - the pick-up truck lights illuminating the grass where Jo span and span under the stars while the rock station played on the radio and Ash had smoked a joint and drank a beer on the bonnet.
- Jo & Ash: Farewells
He had been the only person Jo had told before she took off. She’d come in through the back door and went straight to the Doctor’s office, tears still burning at her eyes but refusing to be shed. Ash had been the only one who understood how she felt. Who got why she was mad, and exactly who she was mad at. He was the one who handed her a wad full of cash, the keys to his truck and five credit cards he promised he’d take care of for her. Ash had been the one to kiss her on the forehead, throw her bag in the back of the cabin and squeeze her goodbye.
He had been the one she called to, directly to him, when a case was looking hard to crack. The only one she trusted to know where she was, what she was doing, and to help her figure out what she was after. Ash had been her one connection home, and while she had sent her mom postcards from all over the country with no message, Ash was the one who got emails every other day, full of her thoughts and fears, her hopes and her concerns. Ash was the one who helped her through the worst scrapes; and he was the one that convinced her to go to Duluth to rest up and work the bar there for her aunt and uncle when she had broken her foot on the case before chasing down a werewolf.
Ash had been the reason she ever went back to the Roadhouse, the only reason she ever returned to Nebraska while she’d still been alive the first time. To see the burnt-out husk of the bar in the dusty car park, and to sit under the old oak tree out the back they had laid out under for years in the Summers to bury the one old flannel of his she’d taken with her. The only thing left of him she had to put away until she met up with her mom and inherited his watch instead.

Guys, I'm gonna talk about Les Mis again. Buckle up.
I watched a video from a guy called Micky Jo I think where he discussed his least favorite lyrics in Broadway love songs. No shade to him, because everyone's entitled to their own opinions and he did make some good points, but I disagreed with him here.
His complaint about A Heart Full of Love was that Cosette keeps shooting down Marius's attempts to be romantic (I am lost - I am found, do I dream - I'm awake, etc)
But here's why I actually think that those lyrics are so good!
It demonstrates their characters and their backgrounds. Perfectly.
Cosette - who's spent most of her life hidden away in a convent behind walls, living a life apart from the real world, sees Marius as the embodiment of that reality, so her romantic associations with Marius are far more real world.
Marius - who's been beaten and broken by the real world quite a lot lately now that he's living a life of poverty with only himself to depend on, sees Cosette as a dream. An unobtainable angel who's miraculously falling for him and he can't understand why. (And also, let's face it, he's surrounded by classics majors who spout poetic nonsense nonstop, he probably picked it up from them.)
"Cosette, I don't know what to say."
"Then make no sound."
That's not her shooting him down, that's her saying that his presence is enough. He doesn't have to say anything if he can't.
"I am lost." - I love this line because the symbolism runs in so many ways.
I am lost. I followed Eponine into the bowels of Paris to find you and now I'm literally lost.
I am lost. I'm lost in the beauty of your eyes and your smile and everything about you.
I am lost. I'm a lost cause now. Lost to anyone who ever thought I was theirs.
I am lost. I don't have any opinions that are my own. I've always been told what to think, first by my grandfather, now by my friends. I am lost and I'm hoping I might find myself in you.
I am lost. I am twenty years old, impoverished, and fighting a cause I don't believe in. I don't know what I'm doing with my life.
Just...yeah
"I am found"
On the flip side we have Cosette, who is also quite literally found by Marius because he was looking for her (double meanings are so clever I really don't get why Micky had an issue with this song)
She's found because she's been spending her whole life hidden away.
The faraway song calling out to her in In My Life has found her.
Life has found her.
Valjean still sees Cosette as a child lost in a wood. But that's not what Marius sees. She's not that child lost in a Wood anymore. She's been found.
"Do I dream?"
Do I dream? You're so perfect and wonderful I feel I must have strayed into a dream. (*swoon*)
Do I dream? Do I dare to dream that I might have fallen in love?
Do I dream? Is this what all the poets felt when they sang their songs of love?
"I'm awake"
I'm awake. I've been dreaming my way through life already. Dreaming of finding love. Dreaming of living life. Dreaming of what it's like beyond my father's protectiveness. I found you and now I'm awake.
I'm awake. I've missed so much of my life. I've slept through it all. Now, I see you and I'm wide awake. I don't want to miss this.
I'm awake. "They say we are asleep until we fall in love. We are children of dust and ashes. And when we fall in love we wake up and we are a god and angels weep." (Great Comet anyone?)
So yeah, I have a lot of feelings about this song.

I read some fic and now you all have to listen to me ramble about the small things I want to change or make happen in TOAverse.
This might be an unpopular opinion but I actually believe of all the places for Meg to settle after TOA, it's not at the Cistern. Also, considering she watched her origjnal home burn down there, it's not reallllly the best place to heal your trauma from your dead dad, ya know? You can be strong and confront your past, but you don't need to constantly confront it all the time. I get the poetry of building something new out of the ashes, but from a mental standpoint, it's just...you need brains of titanium not to feel some sort of residual pain from that horrible incident where you lost your home. Besides it being her original home, she doesn't have any friends there. Sure, she has her plants, but she can make plants anywhere. What can truely make it home, if the people she cares about aren't there? And I don't agree with her living with her Nero siblings, because they still likely hold toxic behaviours and as cruel as it might sound, it's not Meg's responsibility to help them. Meg is a kid, she deserves to live a happy life and act her age.
Now onto Apollo. Same logic, he's not responsible for fixing his siblings or his dad. He may be a god, but he's also a person too. His relationship with the other gods may get better, but what about him? Who's gonna care about him bro? As someone once said, Apollo literally has horrible PTSD. How's he going to heal from that alone, feeling like he doesn't belong with the gods but also feeling the world of demigods is not his place? I'm gonna scream this. APOLLO NEEDS A HOME. HE LITERALLY NEEDS ONE. EVERY SINGLE BOOK HE WANTED A HOME. A HOME WHERE HE CAN FINALLY BE LOVED.
Ok. Moving on...(as you can I tell I feel rather strongly about this)
If Meg and Apollo look for a home, they should look for one together, because they found the family they were looking for in each other.
And I personally would love to see them settle at the Waystation. Why? Because the waystation is a place for stray demigods, Jo and Emmie know how to take care of trauma and they welcome anyone, regardless of background. It's a place where Lit, a former antagonist, found an accepting home and a place where your history is not more important than your current actions. And who needs to see that right now? Apollo. Who's self esteem is so low it's literally dragging behind him. Furthermore, Jo was one of the only people who actually took care of Apollo and cared about his emotional state. She's like a parental figure. And Meg can plant whatever she wants in the rooftop garden. Leo also lives there! They had a good dynamic in TDP. (Also Apollo still wants to learn that Valdezinator) Think about all the friends Apollo made there, he saved the griffins, he helped Lit find a new path, and he helped protect the waystation. People there don't see him as a god, they see him as a person.
TLDR: Apollo and Meg are family. They need a home together. They need some parental figures who understand trauma. They need friends. They need warmth and safety. Hence. Waystation.
End post.

Ground Control to Major Tom
Ground Control to Major Tom https://ift.tt/m2IrB5i by MrsShinigamiDaiko Dean Winchester dreamed of being a mechanic all his life, but he never thought he would end up working as a mechanic for NASA and going into space. Or is it something much more sinister, watching and waiting for the opportune moment?
