The characters Hector and Capochin from go by he/him pronouns and refer to themselves The Bizzyboys! So i defer to them as old men.

That being said, they also come from a game where most of characters don’t subscribe to a gender binary. There’s a lot of characters that appear to be trans, non-binary, gender-fluid, so on. Canonically, here’s a character that bi-gender, another character who uses it/its pronouns—I could go on.

Basically I’m just trying to say that I don’t think the gender themselves is important. Hector and Capochin can be toxic old woman yuri or old man yaoi.

I have my own headcanons for what their genders are but I’ll keep them under the cut since they’re just headcanons.

I honestly believe that the Bizzyboys can be more than one gender, but they don’t understand how to use more than one kind of pronoun.

They understand gender can be expressed in any shape or form, regardless of their personal biology, and are satisfied with how they present themselves, but they just think using only he/him and boys to refer to one another is easier and use it as a catch-all.

Inspekta/Hector and Capochin, in my eyes, are both afab trans men who refuse to bind or top surgery or go in HRT. Names are an important part of being in the Bizzyboys, and they’re both refugees from another dimension that is equivalent to Hell in this universe, so I think they were subjected to transphobia back in the Drain and chose their current names.

Patty is genderfluid, presenting femme but preferring he/him. If he hangs out with Razz more often, I could see him embracing she/her pronouns, but it’d get a bit confusing. Since he’s the youngest, I think he’s one of the few Bizzyboys born in the Grove and not the Drain, seeking to join the crew as a form of inclusion rather than obligation, so he’s grown up a more accepting livelihood of gender expression. It also might explain why he’s the first to break off from the Bizzyboys and stand up to Capo.

Alexei is gay cis man but in a “I don’t really care what I’m perceived as” kind of way. Just prefers comfy clothing and good food.

Bananathaniel is also an afab trans man who got top surgery at Hobbyhoo and wants to be perceived as a man. I could see him, Alexei, and Grujaja being from The Drain but immigrated to the Grove after Hector ascended and established roots for refugee camps. I don’t think there was just One Mass Exodus, I think there were several smaller ones over time, which were made much easier once Hector became a god.

Grujaja is intersex, but is too anxious to really care either way or out too much thought into it yet. I could see him being the most recently immigrated to the Grove and possibly hypersensitive to the sunlight (The Drain is at the bottom of the ocean don’t @ me).

Vibiano is non-binary preferring he/him, but prefers to dress either way. Like Patty, he’s native to the Grove and doesn’t care so much about what people think of him. The gender presentation isn’t the thing that’s most important to him—so long as he dresses fabulously and designs his own outfits, that’s all he cares about.

"Sir, you sure you wanna go that way?" The border guard, a squat, four-eyed creature in an itchy-looking uniform, asked quietly.

Ford pulled the hood down further on his head. "I must. Why do you ask?"

The guard scratched his head, looking worried. He glanced back at the titanium door to Dimension 76*, and Ford followed his gaze.

He could see the perpetual lightning storm surrounding the entrance and beyond it the dimension itself. It was quite like the depictions he’d come across a few weeks ago, a long narrow, cylindrical corridor, like the inside of a watertube, with walls of electrified mist and an air overflowing with strange fumes.

Supposedly, the corridor stretched out into infinity.

"Uh, no reason," said the guard, "it's not like it's any of my business, but...why'd you wanna go there? No one goes out of their way to seek out visions. They're a bad time, y'know?"

Ford knew. Most visitors to Dimension 76* saw either their death or some kind of impending catastrophe they could not prevent. Most stayed clear away. But if there was a chance he'd see a vision that could help him stop Bill, he had to take it.

"I must," he said again.

The guard shrugged. "Suit yourself, I guess." He stepped away from the entrance.

Ford approached it slowly, peering inside. There didn't seem to be any form of gravity, and so he took a breath and leaped into the corridor.

He felt a slight breeze pick him up as soon as his boots left the ground. He floated slowly away from the entrance, and couldn’t help scrambling to hold onto…something. It was useless of course, he just drifted further.

A bolt of lightning crackled just a few yards away, in the mist.

"Oh yeah!" The guard called out, "It's pretty leaky, mind-wise! Watch out for anyone who'd wanna get into your head."

Oh no.

Before Ford could call out, the guard shut the door to the entrance. An ominous CLANG echoed down the tunnel. Ford shuddered.

It would be fine. Despite the wanted posters and the headhunters constantly after him, Ford had not seen Bill since he'd fallen through the portal. There was no reason to think-

He felt it. A wave of drowsiness bowed him over. He knew it was the onset of a vision before his eyes fell closed, heavy with sleep. He struggled to stay conscious for only a moment, before letting it overtake him.

It would be fine. No need to panic. He'd be just fine.

Ford heard the echo of that familiar, horrible laugh before he knew everything had gone wrong.

But by then it was too late.

...

Ford woke up to see his own familiar mindscape, and it instantly filled him with dread.

"Heya, smart guy!"

Ford turned around so fast he stumbled. The flash of panic and deep-rooted anger evaporated when he saw what Bill was holding.

Bill's eye followed Ford's dumbfounded gaze to the bouquet of flowers in his hand. "Hey, heard it doesn't hurt. Token of my goodwill." Bill shoved the flowers into Ford's hands. They smelled like an acid pool and some other, inexplicable flowery scent that wasn't bad, but made him uneasy.

Suddenly, the flowers erupted into a dozen hungry, sharp little mouths, snapping at his face. Ford cried out and dropped the bouquet. The flowers melted into a dark puddle of blood.

"Hey! Kinda rude to throw out a gift, doncha think?" Bill petulantly folded his arms over his front, before his eye crinkled. "Oh, who am I kidding, I can't be mad at you, kid."

His arm extended, a familiar gesture to ruffle Ford's hair, and Ford violently slapped his hand away. "Get out of my head, Cipher!"

"Still mad, huh? Geez, and they say I hold grudges."

Bill winked out of existence and appeared next to Ford with a POP. Ford jerked away, startled. "Come on, you can't be mad at me forever! So I fudged a few details, big deal, it's what I do!"

Anger threatened to bow Ford over, a good part of it aimed at himself. "What are you doing here?"

"Great question!" Bill looked to the side, "Saw you were getting pretty close to an access point and figured 'Hey why not?'" He shrugged. "Haven't had my EYE on you in, what, a week?"

"Five years."

"Oh yeah," Bill said, "Time scales that small get all jumbled up. Who needs seconds? Speaking of!" Bill opened his palm, and a shiny, golden stopwatch materialized in his hand. "It's about time we talked, dontcha think?"

"I have no desire to talk to you."

"Ha ha ha! That'll change."

"What does that mean?"

"Oh, you know, I'm about to drop some real bombshells here! So if I were you, I'd hear me out! You're on that whole quest of 'stopping' me and all, who knows what kinda secrets I'd spill if I'm not careful."

Bill had a point that Ford had, unfortunately, considered, if they'd ever meet again. It didn't help that Bill was the one who brought it up in the first place, and it was doubtful he'd give Ford anything more than some dead-end nonsense.

But if Ford said the right thing, and got Bill on edge, then maybe-

"Fine," Ford snapped, "what is it?"

"Good boy," Bill said smugly, and with a snap of his fingers the stopwatch vanished. "Great you decided to stick around, 'cause I'm about to change your mind!"

It's not like I have a choice, Ford thought bitterly.

"I don't think you understand what you're getting if you stick by me, Sixer!"

"I told you, I'd never-"

"INFINITE POWER! Do you have any idea what that means?"

Suddenly, the mindscape around them erupted with light. Ford stumbled, looking down, to see what could only be described as millions of supernovas going off at once.

"You'll never die! Never get old! You'll know everything and get to stick your curious nose into anything you want, just how you like it."

The glow was coming off of Ford's clothing and his hands. He felt like he was on the brink of collapse and bursting with energy all at once, and indescribably ecstatic feeling.

"Infinite possibilities! Infinite choices! Do whatever you want however you want, you get to choose who's right and who's wrong. What do a bunch of ignorant mortals know, anyway? Are they really worth all this? You, running around, getting shot at left and right, are they worth all of that when they couldn't even see who you were beyond some freakish fingers?"

"T-that's irrelevant," Ford tried to shake off the rush of energy, but it clung to him. It was the first time he felt so...

"You'll never be alone."

The words went straight to the bottom of Ford's stomach. He swallowed.

He didn't have to listen to Bill. He didn't have to listen to any of this.

"I don't care."

Bill looked at him for a long time, pupil wide and piercing. "I don't think that's true, kid. Aren't ya tired of running?"

He was. He was tired, hungry, and driven by anxiety and anger every waking moment.

Sometimes, when he got low enough to think, he'd remember his house. He'd trashed it after Bill had betrayed him, but the comfort of a ripped couch was better than the hardness of alien rocks. He'd had food, he'd had a shower.

Sometimes, he'd remember a different home, one near the sea. His mom's terrible cooking, his father's stern, unwavering face.

He made sure, in those moments, not to think of his brother.

"I'm right, aren't I?" Bill said.

Ford turned to look at him, a newfound burn in his chest. "It doesn't matter. I'd rather be alone than give in to you."

Bill let out a frustrated noise that Ford had never heard before. "Oh, come on! That's just petty! You're seriously gonna spend your time eating alien rats when you could be top of the food chain?"

Something didn't sit right with him. "Why do you want me on your side so badly?"

"That's-!" Bill sputtered, sputtered! Ford didn't know what to think. "This isn't about me, wise guy! This is about-"

"Why are you here, Bill?"

"Because you need to get over yourself!"

Bill's shrill voice bounced off the nonexistent walls of the mindscape. Ford uncovered his ears, just to be met with another tirade. "We get it, you fancy yourself a BIG HERO, you wanna play hard to get, but we both know that's never what you're after! You wanted to get rich and famous off some big discovery because you can't stand not getting the attention, well guess what, I'm offering all that on a silver platter! And you're turning your nose up because, what, you're too good for it?"

"I'd never-"

"Shut UP! I'M TALKING!"

Ford shut up.

Bill blinked, "I sure got mad there, huh."

It had felt personal. For a moment, Ford thought (hoped?) that Ford's refusal had truly gotten under Bill's skin. If it was even a fraction of the betrayal Ford had felt. That it wasn't just Bill trying to manipulate him.

"Is that," Ford breathed. "Is that all?"

Bill scowled down at him. "Whatever. You'll be back. We both know you'll be back." He raised a hand. "See ya in your nightmares, kid."

He snapped his fingers.

Ford woke up, breathing ragged. He looked around.

He was lying on something solid, a small patch of grass underneath his head. It wasn't Dimension 76* anymore. It had spat him out.

The vision was already slipping away from his memory. There was something odd about it, wasn't there? Something that Bill had said-

oh im so glad you picked up on that too! theyre literally ideological foils to each other in that episode: even as they bond over some shared values and trauma (and attraction), the key conflict between them is that gwaine's life experiences have made him a staunch anti-royalist while merlin is prophecy-pilled into believing he lucked out with "the good ones". from the moment merlin learns gwaine's dad was a knight he relentlessly uses this fact to convert gwaine back to catholicism nobility so he can stick around as a knight of camelot, which merlin rationalizes as a kindness because gwaine seems lonely and leads a dangerous life.

but the way gwaine reacts to merlin's attempts at persuasion is conflicted and suspicious because "what's this guy's agenda?" and i don't think that ever fully lets up. even as gwaine concedes that arthur is one of "the good ones" i do believe it's just for merlin's sake because there are no "good ones" in a class war lol he sees how rooted merlin is in his beliefs (not to mention the repressed sexuality) and wants to reassure him that even though he's in no rush to join him, he's not judging him either. and merlin is relieved and happy with this outcome because gwaine kindly didn't call him out on the homosexuality and he stopped trying to threaten his beliefs. that whole episode is the equivalent of being a leftist on a dating app in 2022 wondering how low you'd stoop for a cute british twink that's unironically mourning queen elizabeth. but i digress.

merwaine is toxic yaoi to ME because not only does it start with them butting heads ideologically, merlin's ideology WINS and gwaine abandons everything he stood for to become a knight in the hopes of finding love and community. and then of course by the time s4 and s5 roll in there is so much grief and shame and fanaticism in merlin that he refuses to indulge, refuses to go off-script and allow gwaine to be anything except a tool and a weapon. which is obviously not the vibe gwaine was getting off of merlin in s3, but by his last episode he's surrendered himself to the reality that that's all merlin allows himself to want from him to the point where after merlin rejects him one last time he literally gives him his sword and lets him walk away. grim!

then again, they're both complicit in making each other feel worse! gwaine sounds like he already has some mistrust of magic when we first meet him, and by s5 he's parroting camelot-isms about magic, "you are a sorcerer and a heretic", and killing sorcerers who did nothing. and then merlin quietly marks their grave and keeps repeating to himself that "it'll get better one day" while refusing to listen to anyone who has any criticism whatsoever.

and to circle back to the point of "they figured each other out": THAT'S WHY IT'S SO POTENT. TO ME. merlin knows that gwaine loves him best of all but whenever gwaine tries to act on his love merlin recoils because of catholic fanaticism he's convinced everyone he shares his secrets with will die. the repression is off the charts. and gwaine resents repression but he's forced to abide by it because he's disarmed by merlin's apparent selflessness and bravery (and the fact that merlin gets to live a life of adventure and self righteous fighting while not actually being a noble - that's literally gwaine's dream!) but i simply cannot look at gwaine in honestly ANY of the seasons he's in and go "oh he doesn't mind :) he just wants to be involved!" the man practically died of a broken heart. merlin broke his heart. and gwaine let him, he was also an active participant! i like to overanalyze eoin's acting decisions and try and pinpoint moments where he bites his tongue lest he says something that goes against merlin's (and the show's) ideology that will cost him his place. which is not unlike hiding a secret identity if you think about it

not only am i a prophet but i am also super petty!! and the fact that both the love triangle amd trevek got incredibly fucked over this episode it's a ten outta ten for me. complete with riya and alec winning reward, yul getting five seconds of screentime total, connor being useful and jake and aiden almost dying by a wolf... yeah 10/10 for sure.

it's a 10/10 even without my petty jokes. aiden's VA made me crack up this episode, the love triangle got a fitting end, alec deserved immunity, we all knew krystek was coming sooner or later, honestly it's a well-written episode overall what can i say!!

only thing im sad about is my aroace krystal hc is completely out the window but its a small price to pay for trevek death. disventure camp sucks too much to have the honor of aspec characters anyways

hihi dnana, super sorry I took so so long to get to this one in particular, I got backed up with work and school haha. And I'm so sorry to hear that, they definitely blew it out of proportion and that's kind of a bit immature on their part. Rest assured I love getting asks and hearing opinions, they fuel my yaoi passion (✷‿✷)

I'd love to answer for the other ships but I think I've only got energy for Goyuu rn lol. And damn am I gonna have to rack my smut filled brain for this one. I've never really been taken by any of the jjk characters cuz on the first watch, to me it was just like any other shonen. Reading a lot of what the fandom had to say over the last few years has definitely changed my opinion.

Gojo and Yuuji were definitely the first two characters that stuck out to me most in the series, (mostly bc of that almost kiss but oh well (✿ ♡‿♡). They both definitely oozed main character energy and I never completely saw Gojo as just the 'super powerful sensei' there always felt like there was more to him and when story began to focus a bit more on him I wasn't totally surprised.

Overall he's a commanding presence, and enigma in his own right and I admire how much he cares for his students. I wouldn't call him a perfectionist because of he was many of the adult characters and megumi wouldn't have so much of a issue with his attitude. But his definitely to be the strongest definitely stems from some deep drive to be what the jujutsu society needs him to be. And that I think is one of the sadness things about him.

Which is kind of where Yuuji kind of comes in. Like any regular person after watching jjk 0, I couldn't help but look for parallels between Yuuji and Geto. Not purely because of their connections to Gojo but because of their personalities which are quite similar. But where Geto's WAS a quiet kind of optimism and support Yuuji is more open, more rooted in the world around him. I'm not particularly fond of happy-go-lucky toxic positivity protagonists but there's about Yuuji that doesn't quite reach those extremes. He's kindness and slight hero complex is what leads him to assume the weight of the world his shoulders but the very admirable thing about him is that he doesn't break, no matter how weak he is in the face of it all because, undeniably, unlike other protagonists, you can't trust plot armour to work for him. All you know is that Gege doesn't want him happy.

What draws me to them as one of the best ships in the show tho, aside from the yummy teacher/student dynamic, is how cute the look together. Sue me but there's something inherently attractive about their color pallette and height difference. They're so funny and goofy together and Yuuji's ability to match other's energy and brighten the atmosphere is definitely something Gojo deserves to have around more frequently. Similarly I think Gojo's experience with Geto can help him reach out to Yuuji in times the younger male needs to understand not everyone can be saved. There's also this personal thing of mine where I view them as, Yuuji admires Gojo's strength, Gojo sees Yuuji's potential as someone to stand with him at the top (not like Yuuji gonna be topping in any other aspects of ya know what I mean).

All in all, it just makes me so happy seeing the two of them together, there's a lot of potential their dynamic and personalities leave up to exploration. Being teacher and student I also think there'll be a lot of nuance to their relationship if they did fall in love.

The Year in QL: 2024 Top 10 and Appreciation for Original Scripts

For the first time in five years I managed to sit my ass down and finish a yearly roundup post, so I'm cross-posting some of it here. You can read the whole thing (including expanded blurbs) HERE; it has some number breakdowns and the rest of my ratings.

Top 10 of 2024

10. The Rebound (8.0)

My good friend C. has excellently articulated a “grand theory of anime” that I kept thinking about while watching this show:

an anime is any series that combines (1) “manic purity,” (2) internally consistent, if deranged, character motivations, and (3) suspension of disbelief wrt worldbuilding/setting.

The Rebound is anime. It is anime in the form of a batshit insane live-action basketball BL that was tailor-made for me as a viewer and for Meen (a real-life basketball player! I’m not sure if hoops is his side gig or if kissing men is his side gig, and honestly I don’t care!) and Ping as actors. There is absolutely no way to fit this series into any sort of real-world logical framework, and in fact its closest comp title might be the under-appreciated sapphic-ish anime Birdie Wing: Golf Girls’ Story, because it follows a very similar trajectory in which the first two-thirds of the show takes you on a series of sharp descents into chaos involving mafia elements, underground betting on street ball, toxic old man yaoi, and wildly disproportionate stakes like kidnapping and worse, the culmination of which made me black out from the sheer amount of adrenaline coursing through my veins, but then they… go back to high school? to play high school basketball? You have to respect a script that does not respect reality.

The actual basketball in this show was barely recognizable as an organized sport, but on the other hand the story was so engaging, with thoughtful emotional arcs, multiple instances of unrequited love, and a second lead people could actually root for—and did, to the point where some folks felt poly-baited. I don’t know if I want to fight Golf Tanwarin or if I want to give them all of my money to make more shows like this.

9. Only Boo! (8.0)

Sometimes a show doesn’t need to do anything groundbreaking to win me over. Sometimes it just needs a protagonist who is a charming bundle of hopes and doubts and desires and unceasing gumption, and a love interest who is Doing His Best, and enough youthful earnestness to melt a cold dead heart (mine). Only Boo! was a triumphant debut for Keen (Moo, who I wanted to eat with a spoon) and Sea (Kang, stoic and self-sacrificing), and the first two-thirds of the story—everything leading up to the idol arc—was pitch-perfect, as bad student/aspiring idol Moo shamelessly flirted his way past food vendor Kang’s measly defenses, opening his eyes to not just the possibility of love, but also his own dormant dreams of being an artist. While the last third, centered around Moo’s idol life, suffered from uneven execution, especially regarding some of the subplots, the show had done enough by then to establish Kang and Moo’s relationship as one that was worth seeing through, and every bit of sweetness at the end felt earned.

8. Dead Friend Forever (8.5)

This was unlike any other show I watched in QL this year—an anguished, ambitious horror fable that showcased BOC’s best young talent at the time. DFF was a mashup of ’90s slasher flicks, even older closed-room mysteries dating back to Agatha Christie (And Then There Were None, obviously), contemporary horror as social critique, and folk and spiritual elements from Thai horror.

This was dark as hell; the shit that Non (played by Barcode, who broke me with this role) went through, at the hands of his supposed friends as well as almost every single person who was in a position to help him, was really difficult to watch. As vicious and manipulative and cowardly as the teens were, though, the more tragic and enraging failures happened at the adult and societal level. Family that shunned instead of accepted, enabled instead of educated, adults that preyed instead of protected, police that obfuscated instead of investigated, and so on. The visual storytelling was stunning, the thrills and twists were more of the hold-your-breath variety, and the final set piece was a bold choice that required a lot of careful setup to pull off, and I loved the way it all played out.

7. Peaceful Property (8.5)

This was GMMTV’s best show of the year, as well as its most creative offering since The Warp Effect, boasting a fresh concept and original script, solid production value (the vibrant color palette made me so happy), and a main cast that not only played off one another well (a real challenge when it comes to comedy!) but also had genuine chemistry beyond the romantic kind. Also, a personal weakness: the repeated motif of a communal dining table. The ghost hunter/exorcism setup served as a natural backdrop for slapstick, supernatural/horror elements, and camp, but there was an intentional gravitas baked into the story from the outset. I was really hooked by the socioeconomic commentary (should have seen it coming with the real estate angle, dammit) vis-a-vis the ghost of the week, which asked some important questions—who gets to have their story told, whose lives are deemed valuable and whose are deemed disposable, and, of course, the true meaning of a home.

6. Jack & Joker: U Steal My Heart! (8.5)

Perhaps more than any other project this year, J&J represented a truly maverick vision. The script was a maximalist whirlwind, the production quality was superb, and for the most part the show accomplished what I think it set out to do. Every episode was jam-packed, which meant the series itself felt laden in the best way, like a holiday feast. There was an increasingly ill-advised series of heists! So many disguises (including drag)! Pointed commentary on the cruel realities of socioeconomic disparity! Sadistic rich people behavior! Lovable grandma and young neighborhood spitfire stealing scenes! So much groveling!

The focus on community was a strong thread throughout, with Jack and Joke’s individual journeys woven firmly through. My personal preference would have been a grittier, more bittersweet ending, given the build-up to a high-stakes climax, but for a largely self-funded and self-driven passion project, this was genuinely impressive from start to finish. It managed to balance heart, humor, action, romance, and social commentary, while showcasing powerhouse performances from YinWar (these two men can Cry), and will remain one of my favorites purely on those merits.

5. Love in the Big City (9.0)

There was no way I wasn’t going to watch this, but the more I learned about the production process and its struggles and triumphs, the more invested I became, to the point where I was worried that I had overhyped it in my mind. Turns out, one of the best novels about queer urban life can in fact also produce one of the best shows about queer urban life, one that celebrates all the joy and wonder and messiness of dating and romance while still foregrounding the intense loneliness that can make a person self-sabotage, or leave them unmoored despite having a solid support system. Nam Yoon-su delivered a layered, poignant performance as Go Young, showing all his human parts—the likable and difficult sides alike—and portraying his growth over time along with the relationships that came and went. Speaking of, the elliptical structure of the novel posed an interesting adaptation challenge, and the series took a creative approach by employing a different director for each of the four “chapters” of Go Young’s story, which paid off with subtle but appreciable differences in each of the two-episode arcs.

4. Knock Knock Boys! (9.0)

There was something magical in this original script, which gave the four housemates room to establish real platonic intimacy, talk frankly about sex and love, and otherwise become real bros, and the romantic relationships developed out of all that healthy organic communication, which was quietly kinda radical for BL. Outside of the feelings stuff, the show also packed in slapstick, hijinks, sex ed, family drama, and most importantly, the Awkward Sex Scene Of My Dreams. Latte was rightfully a fandom-favorite character of the year, but the show succeeded on the back of a real team effort, and I know I’ll go back to this show as a comfort watch in the future. Amazing how four dudes sharing a chaotic home-cooked breakfast (see also: personal weakness; visual motif) after a night of hard drinking can alter your brain chemistry!

3. Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo (9.0)

After struggling to fully connect with some of Hwang Da-seul’s previous work, I can say that she did something special with LFCT. The way the script dealt with the titular curse — which encompasses cycles of abuse, childhood trauma, and debilitating societal pressure — was sometimes feather-light and required deep attention paid to the small visual details, but it never pulled its punches when it came to Big Feelings, nor did the un-cursening progress along a linear path, which felt frustratingly realistic. Do-hoe and Ju-yeong were but mere babes at the start of the series, navigating through late adolescence while hiding deep scars and shouldering heavy burdens. After things went terribly wrong, that rupture affected each of them differently in the 12 years afterward. Watching them try to reconcile while picking at old wounds was painful, but it was so easy to root for them, both separately and together, both in their teens and as adults—and even more than falling back in love, I wanted them to heal, to experience that moment of catharsis when the curse was finally lifted.

2. My Stand-In (9.0)

This show was actual catnip for me. It wasn’t on my radar at all, but I followed the buzz from fandom and was rewarded with an utterly thrilling second-chance narrative featuring two of the most compelling characters of the year. The concept of a stand-in (stuntman, lover, body) pulled triple duty to delicious effect, the post-transmogrification part was handled especially well through the use of mirrors and other reflective surfaces, and there was also a welcome streak of absurdity to balance out the pathos of Joe’s story. My Stand-In was just excellent on all fronts, from Poom and Up fully embodying their complex characters, to the elegance of the adaptation, a sustained sense of high drama, and sweeping romance. I knew the show had me by the throat when I found myself deliriously anticipating the moment when Ming and Joe would finally fuck in missionary.

1. 4 Minutes (Sultrier Version) (9.5)

From a technical standpoint, no other show I watched this year came close to the cinematic qualities of 4 Minutes—the use of visual motifs, framing, and editing were all exquisite, and the acting was also superb across the board, with Fuaiz giving a breakout performance in the role of horny vengeful twink Tonkla. But I was also deeply impressed with how the themes played out, as characters grappled with the repercussions of guilt and redemption, vengeance and acceptance, life and death. To me this was a story about how flawed the human heart is and how rare the chance for salvation is. It wasn’t quite perfect—the speculative aspects didn’t resolve all that neatly (perhaps they are saving it for the tentative sequel?), and I think the pacing could have benefitted from one more episode to let the story breathe a bit—but I loved that it was a serious, mature show that asked metaphysical questions and managed to strike an ending note that was both bittersweet and intensely hopeful.

Originals vs. Adaptations

I started tracking original scripts vs. adaptations this year, and actively used it as a tiebreaker to determine my top 10 rankings, because to me there’s value in rewarding creativity when it comes to pure screenwriting. Obviously there were some standout adaptations this year—there are many thoughtful posts on Tumblr about the choices My Stand-In made to transform the source material (a Chinese danmei) for a Thai audience, for example. And Love in the Big City took a well-known, internationally beloved novel and brought in four different directors to helm each of the story’s four sections, which enriched the viewing experience. But when it came to QL as a genre, I found myself genuinely captivated by the diversity of the original scripts, to the point where they counted for 7 of my top 10 series of the year; put another way, 7 of the 9 originals that I watched this year were extremely high-quality shows.

I mean, look at the scope of material! Deeply unhinged high school sports/crime BL (The Rebound); queer ensemble mystery-horror mashup that was sad as fuck (Dead Friend Forever); ghostbusters found family bromance (Peaceful Property); we found love in a hopeless place.mp3 with heists and crying (Jack & Joker); a romantic dramedy with four housemates—I know it sounds so mundane next to everything else but I promise they are all hot messes (Knock Knock Boys); nostalgic angst-fest that wants to know if the couple that trauma-bonds together can trauma-break together (Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo); and time slip speculative thriller sponsored exclusively by Durex and cat food (4 Minutes).

Spectacular, give me 14 (more) of ’em right now.

Some scattered thoughts:

Part of my struggle with adaptations is the fact that Thai-language Y-novels aren’t more readily available in official English translations outside of the more popular creators, so it’s hard to use them as a reference point. Every time I’m watching a QL adaptation, there’s always the questioning voice in my mind wanting to know if there were any substantial changes made, how different the end product was from the source material, etc. Sometimes a Thai speaker will pop into a Reddit thread to share their thoughts, and I’m endlessly grateful to Tumblr users like @clairedaring who provide comparisons and commentary for adapted series like My Stand-In and Spare Me Your Mercy, but access to that information across the vast swath of Thai BL is patchy at best if you don’t know the language.

While it’s important to evaluate work independently if it spans across mediums (or even adaptations by different countries)—and I do it out of necessity for most Thai shows, as explained in the previous point—there’s also a natural compulsion to want to make those comparisons. If a show starts to go off the rails a bit, and I know it was adapted from a novel, then I get curious about whether the problem is rooted in the source material itself or stems from the adaptation process. I’m inclined to start my criticisms at the screenwriter and director level, since they are responsible for the final script and on-screen product, but without knowing how the original work unfolds, it’s hard to determine what the ideal fix might be. You can’t just say screw the source material, after all.

I think Sammon is a great case study on the challenges of taking a completed work and trying to retrofit it for a different medium (i.e. adaptation) versus working freely within certain parameters from the beginning (i.e. original script). Until collaborating with BOC this year on the original scripts for Dead Friend Forever and 4 Minutes, we’ve only seen her own work made into shows, with varying degrees of success. Even as recently as this week, we saw that tension play out in the fandom reception to Spare Me Your Mercy, which was adapted by a separate writing team; the challenge of trimming down two volumes of plot into 8 episodes while maintaining the thematic richness of the story resulted in certain sacrifices being made by the screenwriter. On the other hand, with 4 Minutes, you didn’t have to wonder if there were parts of the story that were left behind in the adaptation process, because presumably the show more or less reflected the exact story she intended to tell. (Obviously things get cut in the editing process, but Sammon isn’t sitting there having to discard entire years’ worth of plot because of time or budget constraints, unlike what happened with SMYM.) Thus you can evaluate any flaws in the storytelling directly.

I’m going to make a separate post looking ahead to 2025 but I will say that if I do find myself needing to prioritize my time, originality may become a bigger deciding factor. GMMTV actually has a decent slate of non-adaptations coming up, and I’m also looking forward to whatever WeTV and Viu have in the pipeline as original series, since they had a pretty good track record for me this year. (Not to spoil anything before we even turn the calendar, but Caged Again is well on its way to making that top 10, so count that as another WeTV win.)

Yes, it is time, finally!! Baltazar and Ramon are tying the knot at last at the San Myshuno park. After years of romantic disappointments, homewrecking, breaking up and getting back together, we've arrived at the end game!! I can't believe it took this long, but then again - the idea didn't occur to me until May or so. I'm happy I acted on it, though, as Ramon is such a lovely sim!! My girlie @slonechnik's game is truly unmatched. Thank you, everyone, for rooting for my toxic old men yaoi and their reconciliation arc!! ⋆｡°✩

As per usual, the wedding was rather short and straight to the point. It was a lovely weather that Spring evening, and so all the guests arrived at the park without troubles. Everyone gathered at the outside wedding arch and watched the quick but sweet ceremony. After that, it was time for yummy meals - and to my surprise, everyone wanted a plate of these almond macaroons!! I left the attendees alone so they could gossip at their tables in peace.

Of course, the adult part of the party had to have a celebratory glass of al- alco- juice, of course!! Baltazar's parents, Serafin and Mantella, were simply delighted to see their son finally settling down happily. And Ramon, now their son-in-law, might've become their new favourite person!! There hasn't been a spellcaster in the family since Asterion (generation 10), so Serafin and Mantella are rightfully fascinated by this turn of events. Ramon's way of living also heavily differs from the Owls' in Henford-on-Bagley, and he's excited to tighten the relationship with his in-laws as much as they are!! ₊˚⊹♡

Hello! I was re-reading -i bet you think about me- yesterday, and saw your reblog about the commentary posts 👀 would v much enjoy some info on the writing process for that fic. It's my favourite modern-era version of Jonathan, that perfect mix of grumpy and sweet 🧡 also love how that fic gently played around with the mean/petty elements of both Steve and Jonathan's personalities (v underappreciated character traits of theirs in my opinion)

omg well firstly this is very very nice of you to say!!!!! i am very honored that is a fic you would want to reread, i had a lot of fun writing that one!

and ok so originally i thought that fic might be a long oneshot (this happens very often I fear.) once i outlined and started writing, I realized that wouldn’t be the case, but before that?l? the idea for the fic was inspired by the fact that my Alexa is synced to my Spotify, which means sometimes i’m listening to music on my phone or laptop and it randomly cuts off bc my mom started listening to the Alexa at home. (Luckily this hasn’t screwed my algorithm up too badly. although i did get an email the other month thanking me for being one of earth wind & fire’s top fans.) ((also: i realize now this is a weird jump to “hmm stonathan exes to lovers au where….” but that was indeed the jump i made.))

so for several months the fic sat in my Google docs with just a few lines of prose/dialogue here and there and a couple of notes with ideas. I think the first little bit i wrote was the beginning when steve tells robin about realizing Jonathan still has his Spotify (and by that i mean that for a while the only words in the Google docs were “you know what’s funny about this? You and Jonathan have, like, the opposite taste in music.”) and then for a while I’d randomly come up with little ideas and quickly add them to the doc. In fact, i distinctly remember driving home from a vacation with my family in the car, coming up with a bunch of ideas, and quickly writing them down when we stopped at the Starbucks drive thru. (I think that was when I threw in the what makes you beautiful karaoke flashback and also the scene post-confrontation where Nancy tells steve Jonathan is seeing someone and then has to clarify it’s a therapist lmao)

So that was the ~early stage stuff, and then i fully outlined it and started actually writing and then posting it in chapters, which is around the time I decided it would be nonlinear with flashbacks breaking up the present day sections. Also: the flashbacks were very much my favorite part to write!!!

And then from there i was mainly focused on creating, like….the vibe. I pretty much knew i wanted the fic to start out fun with a lot of Spotify shenanigans but get a bit more angsty as it went on, and i wanted that to tie in with Steve’s general attitude at the beginning being “the breakup wasn’t a big deal and we weren’t even serious” (which you kinda know from the get-go can’t be true because steve and jonathan were neighbors and friends for over a year before they even started dating) and then as the fic goes on you realize it very much was serious and steve is very much not over it. And then alongside that i was trying to walk the line of “these are two fucked up individuals who are very fucked up over each other and the reasons why they broke up make sense for them as characters and are realistic but also you should root for them to get back together regardless.” which was….hard at times lmao. i mean i feel like stonathan kinda have a toxic yaoi vibe depending on characterization / context so it wasn’t hard hard but also i did want to show they were genuinely good together and happy before they self sabotaged their relationship so that was another line i also struggled to walk.

relatedly; i’m glad you said you liked steve and jonathan’s petty/mean elements because i worried at several moments i was making them too mean! i think i was especially worried people would think jonathan was too mean, mainly because you don’t get his pov so you don’t really know what’s going on in his head. which is partly what i added in a little wrap-up of the events of the fic from his point of view when he and Steve talk toward the end. but also, tbh — and maybe this will sound bad lmao — i was thinking about it and then i was like “hang on. you’re writing M/M fanfiction. The only way someone would get mad at you because they think either of them is too mean is if one of them was a woman. So you’re fine.” And that helped lmao

Not really sure when I decided what the ending would be but i knew i wanted their reconciliation convo to start with Jonathan playing a song that had some sort of significance to steve / their relationship. And I knew i wanted them to be like “we’re gonna try again and work things out” but i wanted there to be a sense that they’d be successful without necessarily doing an epilogue??? so I just did a lil paragraph at the end that was like steve imagining them living together and giving speeches at robin and Nancy’s wedding and stuff, and that was basically a little confirmation that they’d be fine and things would work out. And then i ended with a flashback to Steve suggesting they share the Spotify account initially bc I thought that would be nice and full circle :)

I think I've already made my feelings on Kaguragi x Racles pretty clear lol but for the main gang

Kaguragi x Gira: Kaguragi seeing Gira as someone to be manipulated like everyone else vs Gira being the only person to actually see through the mask he wears and liking (what he thinks is) the person underneath but never really managing to get through to him. Kaguragi grows to respect him more as time goes on but Gira would have to work REALLY hard to get underneath that mask and no one around him would understand why he's trying that hard, least of all his brother. I think if in time he did actually manage to see Kaguragi unmasked it would basically immediately turn into the most toxic yaoi on the planet even surpassing kaguracles lol. But the thing is Kaguragi does kinda like him despite everything...

Kaguragi x Yanma: completely incompatible lmao which would be fun for bants but I don't think they'd root tbh. If they did it would be "heavily intoxicated" (not actually that drunk at all bc Kaguragi's tolerance is through the roof and Yanma has anti-drunk technology or some shit idk but they would both say that to avoid saying that they were just really horny). Most of their relationship would be just arguing and a lot of Kaguragi trolling by pretending to not know anything about technology when he's actually very competent.

Kaguragi x Himeno: not each other's types at all BUT they would be besties and they would talk about relationships together for sure. Himeno has been on that flatly anti-Racles shit from birth basically and has always been like GIRL DUMP HIMMM abt it meanwhile Kaguragi is like aww no but I love him :( anywayyy when r u gonna ask out Rita ;) which always works to change the topic. I think they would spend a lot of time talking about beauty and fashion and then into heavy technology and deep state politics and then back into who they should hook Jeramie up with without a break in the flow. Very difficult to follow their conversations.

Kaguragi x Rita: have a lot more alike than they have not but neither of them really like to acknowledge it as their masks are so different. But when they are alone and are relatively relaxed (as far as either of them can get) I think they can have a decent conversation even though it would never stray further than work. Just two north ends of a magnet yk. so alike they constantly slide off each other lol

Kaguragi x Jeramie: I think Kaguragi wouldn't really know what to make of Jeramie personally or politically and Jeramie is a bit too naive to really get whatever Kaguragi is on about either. They wouldn't necessarily have a bad relationship but I think it would be very touch and go, especially as Jeramie is close to Gira.

Reread Kimi to Isshin Denshin! and it’s cute, but nowhere near the 9/10 I originally had it as. It’s a cute premise, and I like the emotional intelligence of the lead, but the amount of awkward prodding and wacky ESP shenanigans made the relationship progression feel all over the place, so I’ve dropped it down to a 6/10.

I’d been slowly picking at it for weeks, but today I finally finished reading My Sister Jodie by Jacqueline Wilson. This is the last of the Wilson books I remember from childhood, and probably my favourite of the ones I’ve read in adulthood. I just love the vibe of Melchester College, and I can understand why Pearl takes to it so much – I love the feeling of hanging out at school outside of school hours in general, and this was that with a heavy dash of dreamy English gothic atmosphere. It’s just really fun to watch Pearl slowly find a place here, and her relationship with Harley is both sweet and a little oddball, which is great. But man…once you know how it ends, the bits of foreshadowing throughout are insane. Pearl and Jodie’s relationship is also so sweet but still realistic, and it really has a different tone from the sisters in Diamond Girls. That just makes the tragedy all the more heartbreaking, though, so it’s hard for me to imagine returning to this in the future…maybe in another decade. And with that, that’s the last of the Jacqueline Wilson books that I wanted to revisit. None of her other books really appeal to me (I’m not into Tracy Beaker, I’m sorry to say), which is a shame, but I feel like I’ve run the gamut of her writing repertoire and had a fairly decent time. Nothing I’d want to own for myself, but still fun to pick up and read from time to time.

I finally read Ei ni Kaita Mochi wo Kaita Mochi – this oneshot came onto my radar back before MamaYuyu even started because it’s done by the same mangaka, and it’s fun seeing the roots of their style starting to get their foothold in this one. I really love the way they play with comic space and typography, and I hope their next run at a serialization is more fruitful. It was a solidly constructed oneshot, and a decent read: 6/10.

Moving all of my manga over to my phone has really done wonders for my manga reading habits (to the detriment of my other work). I caught up with Yuria-sensei no Akai Ito, and I was pleasantly surprised to see Yuria’s potential fling become real so quickly. I love the sense of the messy relationship drama bubbling up underneath the surface of this living arrangement.

Read the entirety of Tamarowa in an afternoon and um…I’ll give it some credit for managing to surprise me a few times and for giving me a lot of lesbian sex scenes and toxic yaoi for what was an extremely het ecchi premise. The whole thing is just banking on being scandalous as possible (in terms of both sex and violence and woAh CrazY MurDereR), but at least it didn’t overstay its welcome and managed to develop its characters somewhat (even if some of their motivations were straight out of a bad soap opera). 4/10.

I checked my notes, and I read Part 1 of Ascendance of a Bookworm almost a year ago??? Literally in the first Week in Review ever?? And then never touched the series again? Well, here’s proof that my dropped series are never truly dropped until I decide to drop them for good, because I read all of Ascendance of a Bookworm Part 2 and I’m well and truly hooked on it now. Watching Myne enter temple life and having to learn how to act like a noble and the responsibilities that carries is extremely my shit – I love the minutiae the author gets into with regards to customs and behaviour, and the manga heightens the tension and makes every potential mishap feel like it could have long-lasting consequences. And I love that Myne trying to establish these new business ventures come with genuine risk and production setbacks, and that she has to navigate these obstacles carefully with the resources and connections that she has. Unlike other isekai, Bookworm’s world feels like a real place with its own culture, politics, class systems, and economics, and it’s so refreshing to see an author actually take those things into account as our fish out of water protagonist clashes with their new surroundings. I really wish the anime was better so that I could watch it, but for now I’ll settle for catching up with the manga and reading the light novels eventually. As it stands, the series gets an 8/10 from me.
