JOKE-OGRAPHY: 1. This cartoon is based on a story from the 6th session of St. Joan's trial. Before I explain it, here's the original segment, translated by W. S. Scott: "Asked what was the age of the child at Lagny that she went to see, she replied: The baby was three days old. And it was brought to Lagny to Notre Dame. And she was told that the maidens of the town were before [the statue of] Our Lady; and that she might like to go and pray to God and Our Lady that it might live. And she went there and prayed to God with the others. And finally life appeared in it, and it yawned three times; then it was baptised and immediately after died, and was buried in consecrated ground. For three days, they said, no life had appeared in the child; and it was as black as her tunic. But when it yawned, the colour began to come back. And she was with the maidens on her knees in front of [the statue of] Our Lady, offering prayers. Asked if it were not said by the town that she had brought this about, and that it was by her intercession, she replied: I never inquired." 2. To summarize, Joan was in a town called Lagny, where a stillborn child was placed before a statue of Mary in hopes of a miraculous revival. Joan is asked to pray over him with the other young women of the town, and when they finish, the baby is temporarily revived and quickly baptized before dying again. 3. Medieval Catholics believed baptism was essential for salvation, and that anyone who died without it could not get into heaven. Losing a child would've been bad enough without believing their soul was lost too, so although this baby's return to life was only temporary, his quick baptism would have meant the world to his family and community. For those who are curious, the Church still believes that baptism is necessary for salvation, but they also teach that God can offer its graces Himself, without the need for formal ceremony. The sacraments are bound to God, but He is not bound by His sacraments. 4. Though it's not explicitly stated in this part of the manuscript, one of the narratives being pushed by the judges during the trial was that Joan was always out to glorify herself, not God. They ask her if the people of Lagny credited her for the miracle, but in this cartoon, I expand that question a bit to get at what they were really trying to say. 5. wouldnt it be simultaneously extremely funny and extremely sad if wei ying's 婴 (infant, baby) was actually his milk name and his official name after his 100 days was still ying but 螢 (firefly), and no one else knew but his parents ? and he himself didnt know either bc cangse-sanren kept on calling him 婴 for the family inner jokey jokes and rarely called him 螢 ? bc apparently "The milk name may be abandoned but is often continued as a form of familial nickname." (Wikipedia, 2024)
[note that, as far as i understand it, 嬰 (yīng) and 螢 (yíng) have diff tones and could historically have been pronounced differently so i wouldnt say they necessarily sound alike to ppl who do know the language well aka wwx and his fam and literally everyone else in the world of mdzs. they only sound alike to ppl who arent used to the nuances and minute differences in the tones that exist in mandarin chinese. correct me if im wrong tho lmao this is just for funsies]

Just happened to see a post about the antiziganist g-slur that was honestly deeply dismissive of the idea that Irish travellers even experience discrimination at all and like. Some people really aren't Irish, huh?
#the suicide rate in the travelling community is seven times the national average#the average lifespan of travellers in ireland is decades younger than the national average#irish travellers are the group that face The most ethnic discrimation in this country#settled people routinely talk about them like they're vermin#and say that They Bring It On Themselves and it's Not Discrimation because they really Are all [X] if anyone calls them on it#travellers I know *cannot* get jobs because of their last name and their accent#they are followed in every shop they go into#there's too much to list individually but like...#please think long and hard before assuming that irish travellers are Just White People who don't face ethnic discrimation#'they weren't left to die when—'#yes they were! yes they are!#a halting site burned down *during a baptism* a few years ago and when the survivors were temporarily housed near an estate#the locals protested until they were removed!#these were people who had just lost immediate family members in a fire including a *baby*#I'm not a traveller and I try to push back against anti-traveller sentiment whenever I can#but I can count on one hand the number of settled people who don't think I'm a naive bleeding heart when I do#because I don't see that travellers are congenitally evil like they do or something#like that's the baseline here!#they are so fucking dehumanised#and it is *so* acceptable in the mainstream#it is not for me to say what slurs that will never be applied to me people can reclaim#but please do not erase the systemic and interpersonal discrimation and abuse the travelling community faces in ireland

Can't find much info about this photo, but it's claimed it's a mass baptism of babies in Gaza because their parents fear they might be killed before they get baptized. (x)
Anyone know which church this is?

when i was born the doctor turned to my mother and shook their head and said quietly “i have bad news to share” and my mother was concerned straightening up in her bed going “what’s wrong? did something happen?” and the doctor replied “i would say congratulations, but your child is a twitter footy bro. my condolences.” i don’t think my mother has ever mentally recovered from that — @lee-kangin
Literally assigned twitter bro at birth 😭😭😭 one thing about me this kind of joke set up ALWAYS gets me because imagine what kind of judgy person you have to be to look at those freshly born babies and diagnose them with being cringe 😭😭😭
