Let's talk about some lesser known symptoms of autism! Maybe this will help some of you get a broader perspective on what this can be like. There is a whole grab bag of symptoms of autism, but here are some ones you may not know that you have.
Focus on truth
What does this mean? Well glad you asked. This is the focus on facts and logic rather than anything else. People have shown this as autistic people may refusing to lie because it goes against what they find as true. But that's not always the case.
Have you ever used logic to try and figure out your emotions?
Are you someone who doesn't understand why others may speculate when the current knowledge is right there? (such as subtext versus canon knowledge or theoretical arguments)
Do you find it frustrating when others avoid their problems as a way to avoid figuring out negative things? (such as avoiding conflict in a friend group)
Is it easy for you to talk about your strengths and flaws? Do you know your likes, dislikes and limits pretty well?
High context communication
This is preference on details and the full context of any situation. Often going into great detail and backstory to anything.
Do you feel as though you need to overexplain to give the person everything they need to know?
Have you ever apologized to someone by explaining the deep and meaningful reasons of why you did it, before you said you were sorry? And maybe even felt upset or confused why they reacted badly?
Have you ever felt stressed out because you wanted to give others full detail but they either interrupted you or cut you off?
Are you stressed out by people who tell you what to do and not why they want you to do it?
Are you ever told that you talk back a lot?
Do you prefer recipes versus verbal/vague instructions? (All the things that you need such as ingredients, measurements, prep time, etc.)
Do you really like watching deep dives and knowing about the whole history of something you're even vaguely interested in?
Identity diffusion
This is not everyone's experience, and it is common in a variety of other disorders such as DID and BPD. However, it is when you do not know who you are in regards to others. This is also known as identity disturbance.
Have you ever felt like an outsider without knowing why?
Are you deeply interested on what other people think of you? Especially if it's all the time?
Do you really like taking personality tests and quizzes? Are you interested in horoscopes?
Do you feel like you don't fit in any one specific group? Either being a loner, or hopping in between many different groups?
Do you ever feel weirder than the "weird kids" group? Do you not really get along or feel like you belong with them?
Do you have low self esteem when it comes to comparing yourself to your friends? Do you feel like they're better or more capable than you?
Do you feel drastically unimportant and not as interesting or cool as everyone else?
Have you ever related to narratives surrounding a character that is the last of their kind?
Do you feel like your identity is a vast and gaping void, that even if you learn a little bit, that you'll never know everything?
Internalized repetition
This is one of those traits that not every autistic person experiences, but that some might. You could say that for all autistic traits, but hey, good to know regardless. Because of internalized repetition, you may not do many external stims, besides vocal.
Do you listen to a song over and over again? Perhaps having a playlist on repeat?
When stressed out, do you type the same word or phrase over and over again?
Do you like looking at the same things, such as the same color or the same artist's works?
Do you really like certain patterns, crystals or aesthetics?
Do you enjoy games with recognizable fighting patterns? (Such as character rotation, boss battle rotation, etc.)
Struggling to connect to others *
This is something that's been characterized by struggling to connect to others through their emotions, but the opposite is actually true for many autistic people. *I will be talking about those who struggle to connect to others who are emotionally distant or unavailable. Being emotionally distant or not showing emotions externally is a trait that many autistic people share, but for those without alexithymia, they may struggle to understand why anyone wouldn't like to talk about their emotions. I don't know the specific symptom term for this, so please bare with me. If anyone would like to inform me about what this is called, please tell me.
Do you struggle to talk with dry texters, or tend to over-examine people's tone through text?
Do you have anxious attachment?
Do you feel disconnected with many other autistic people and struggle to make friends or talk to them?
Do you feel embarrassment or shame with being emotionally sensitive?
Have you fallen down the rabbit hole of things like starseeds, star children or empaths?
Do you want to talk about serious emotions a lot, even when its not appropriate?
Do you trauma dump or wish people would become more emotionally intimate with you? Do you enjoy it when people share their deep traumas with you, even if it's triggering?
Are you constantly reassurance seeking?
There is plenty more symptoms out there, and these are just a few that stood out to me, because I think I may be autistic. I've always related somewhat, but never connected the dots. But there are reasons for that, such as identity diffusion and thinking I'm different from everyone else no matter what. I struggled because I didn't seem to have a lot of the outward and visible symptoms that were often talked about. I thought every autistic person had alexithymia, when that's just not true. My best friend, who has similar symptoms to me, along with another close friend of mine, have a similar presentation of autism. And it's taken quite a bit for me to accept or process. I feel like I'm faking my experiences just because I've self diagnosed before. And I'm angry that ADHD isn't given enough significance.
But I think I might be autistic, and this article that I based this post off of, confirmed it. So here's my post informing and coming out on that. You can be autistic and highly masking without actually knowing what's going on is masking. You can be autistic and have a spectrum of verbality, you can be autistic and struggle to connect to anyone who isn't immediately emotionally intimate with you. You can be autistic and not relate at all to other autistic people.
You're not alone.

Had this rattling around in my brain since the season 2 finale. I hope you all see the vision - I've never done a scroll comic like this before! I think she's a little unpolished but I kinda like it. Inspired by Lament of Orpheus from the Hades ost
(insert joke here about Helly being severed here)

Hello! New to comics and I don't really feel like the New-52 comics are for me and would really like to read and understand Pre-flashpoint and all the dark and good stuff there. Is there an order or starting point you would recommend? Thanks for your time, and I hope you have a great day!
hi! i'm so glad you want to get into comics! i'd love to help with some recs! since you're here, i'm going to assume you're a Batfamily fan and most of my recs will cater to that, but i will try to encompass a bit of everything to help you just understand some big moments and all this mess that is DC canon. adding a cut bc jesus this got long.
so your starting point for pre-Flashpoint is going to be Crisis on Infinite Earths. the TLDR of this event is: DC had a big multiverse in the 70s and early 80s that wasn't friendly to new readers. to try to push their titles more and become a proper competitor to Marvel, they created an in-universe storyline that nuked the multiverse and gave a solid entry point for new fans going forward. this is why you hear terms like Pre-Crisis and Post-Crisis. it refers to the comics canon before and after this event, in 1985. some characters had some big changes (for example: pre-Crisis Jason Todd was a circus kid whose parents were killed by Killer Croc) but most remained largely the same, just simplified. you don't *have* to start with Crisis on Infinite Earths if you don't want to. it's a *good* storyline, but it's a big one and a lot of big multiverse-scale stuff happens. so as long as you understand it as "big event that nuked DC's multiverse and gave the world a clean slate in 1985", then you've basically got the gist. also Barry Allen dies during it, but he comes back so don't worry about it.
in general, if DC has some big timeline/canon-altering event, they're going to call it a Crisis Event. the only Crisis Events that will matter to you, trying to get into pre-Flashpoint are
Crisis On Infinite Earths - the above, starts the Post-Crisis/pre-Flashpoint timeline
Zero Hour: Crisis In Time - an event in the 90s that sought to fix some of the kinks that the above Crisis caused, like fixing the origins of the Legion of Superheroes and other Golden/Silver Age characters, not *super* important tbh
Infinite Crisis - this was a big event that brought back some characters who got nuked by Crisis on Infinite Earths, unfucked Power Girl's backstory, and set the groundwork to bring back the multiverse. if you've heard "Superboy Prime punched a hole in reality and it brought back Jason Todd" yeah, this is the story where it happened
Final Crisis - a big event that was partly meta commentary but heroes fought Darkseid, Batman died for a hot second, it was all a big deal about evil winning and all that
Flashpoint - the event that nuked this timeline, a big storyline to do with Flash and the timeline that would result in the New-52 in 2011
are you confused yet? good embrace the confusion it's going to become second nature of a comic fan. you don't need to read these events as a beginner. you really don't i promise. they'll sound big and important, but besides Crisis On Infinite Earths and Flashpoint, the start and end of this era, the rest you can just kind of breeze by so long as you understand the big plot points like Batman dying or Superboy Prime punching reality. unless you really care about a character central to these stories, skip 'em for now.
now for any character, if they have a Year One comic? that is a very safe bet as a place to start. it is what it sounds like. Batman: Year One is going to be Bruce's first year as Batman. same as Green Arrow: Year One, Batgirl: Year One, etc. when in doubt, if there's a Year One, start with Year One. (note: for Superman, his "year one" type story is called Superman: Birthright and it is worth reading if you like Superman)
for Batman, i am holding you by the shoulders when i say this: people will tell you to read The Killing Joke. they're liars. do not listen to them. it's a bad story. you don't need it. do not let the Joker fanboys lie to you. people will also say Dark Knight Returns. don't listen to *them* either. i *like* DKR, i talk about it a lot here. it's not a good intro to Batman. it's an AU story, it's not canon, ignore it for now.
now where you *should* start with Batman, imo, is as followed
Batman: Year One - as said above, Year Ones are good, this is solid to start with
Batman: The Long Halloween - this is an iconic story and it's a followup to year One
Batman: Dark Legacy - the followup to Long Halloween, also a very good story
Batman: Hush - this story is a solid starter if you want to understand the general vibe of Gotham, the typical characters you see in the Batfamily, and a good Batman villain
once you've got the basics down, you *can* get into the big boy storylines like Batman: Knightfall and Batman: No Man's Land, but don't worry about those right now. they're long and complicated and shouldn't really be your starting point no matter how good they are.
other very good pre-Flashpoint comics that are easy to pick up and iconic storylines
Death of Superman - this is a long arc in the Superman run that if you collect in trades, goes Death of Superman, Funeral For A Friend, Reign of the Supermen, Return of Superman, Doomsday. it's long, but a very iconic storyline
Wonder Woman by George Perez - this the run that helped define modern Wonder Woman within the pre-Flashpoint era
JLA: Year One - if you want a good Justice League story where you get characters besides Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman taking the shine, this is a great place to start
Green Arrow by Mike Grell - start with Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters and then go into Green Arrow (1988). this has the darker, very 80s vibes that gets a bit gritty and very realistic with the issues it faces bc Green Arrow comics tend to be more rooted
The New Teen Titans by Marv Wolfman - this technically starts before pre-Flashpoint, don't worry about it it's fine. a good run for all of these characters, can get a little confusing, it is okay to be confused do not be afraid to google shit
so, some big stories out of the way i'm just. honestly going to run down the line of the major pre-Flashpoint Batfamily members and give you comic recs for them that you can start with. (besides Bruce obviously, bc well. see above)
Dick Grayson
NIghtwing: Year One
Robin: Year One
Nightwing (1995)
Tim Drake
Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying
Robin (1990)
Robin II: Joker's Wild
Robin III: Cry of the Huntress
Robin (1993)
Barbara Gordon
Batgirl: Year One
Birds of Prey (1999)
Jason Todd
Batman: The Cult (as Robin)
Batman: Death in the Family (as Robin)
Batman: Under The Red Hood
Red Hood: Lost Days
Cassandra Cain
Batgirl (2000)
Batman: No Man's Land
Jean-Paul Valley
Batman: Sword of Azrael
Batman: Knightfall
Stephanie Brown
Huntress/Spoiler: Blunt Trauma
Batgirl (2009)
Selina Kyle
Catwoman by Ed Brubaker
Helena Bertinelli
Batman/Huntress: Cry For Blood
Huntress: Year One
Birds of Prey: Manhunt
Damian Wayne
Batman & Robin (2009)
there are other very important pre-Flashpoint stories for all of these characters, but these are starting points more than anything. figure out what characters you're interested and go from there. understanding the universe at large helps, do not get me wrong. but at the end of the day, comics are a choose your own adventure of who you want to give a shit about. you're *never* going to read everything "important" and you're probably not going to understand everything. that's okay. don't treat it like a media you need to "complete" like a tv show or a movie, but more like an open world game where you decide what characters/teams/stories you like the most.
pre-Flashpoint covers a lot of ground. some stuff will be darker and grittier, some stuff will be more light-hearted. it will all be about what titles you pick up and what characters you decide you want to read about. you're obviously going to get a much more grounded storyline out of Green Arrow than you are say, a JLA comic. i prefer the more grounded, "street level" sorts of characters. (if you like gritty detective stories, i will be biased and highly recommend the Question (1987) just because. i love him okay.) but you might find you like sometimes more worldly and big scale. at the end of the day: don't force yourself to love a comic you're not enjoying, even if you like that character. you can put that shit down. sometimes, "important stories" are by shitty writers that you won't enjoy reading and you shouldn't make this hobby a chore. i don't care how "critically acclaimed" it is, you don't have to like it if it doesn't click for you. and on the flipside, a comic might be considered "bad" but you may enjoy it (a personal example: Robin III: Cry of the Huntress is considered a very weak comic. don't care. i love it anyway.) accept the cringe, have fun, and enjoy yourself at the end of the day. none of it will make sense anyway so just read what sounds cool to you.
this was all over the place and rambly, but i hope it helps at least a little! welcome to comics anon! if you or anyone else would like more character-specific recs, feel free to ask! if i don't know, i can at the very least hopefully point you in the right direction <3

Scanning your ticket, you walk into the empty hall of the craft with wide eyes. It was your first time flying, after all. Standing behind a couple who were probably being too open with their PDA, you can’t help but look around, the plain beige walls shaking as the aircraft rumbled lowly. Glancing down at your ticket, you sigh gently at the arranged seat you chose; seat A24. Hopefully that meant you had the window seat. Stopping at the entrance of the plane, you look down at the small sliver at your feet. That definitely wasn’t a good idea. Snapping your head back up, you greet the flight attendant that stood in the plane as you step in.
Looking around, it was like a train wreck. Crying babies, people being unable to find their seat. You felt like you could simply perish. After being bumped by various backpacks and suitcases though, you finally relax in your seat. It was right near the restroom luckily, and you let out a huff as you set your bag under the seat in front of you. From the looks of it, paying extra to check in your suitcase was a wise decision. Putting in your headphones, you scroll on your phone as you wait for the chaos to die down.
That is, till someone taps you on your shoulder, making you jump a bit. You immediately take out a headphone, looking up at who had tapped your shoulder with wide eyes.
“...Is this B24?” The male asks, and you nod quickly. You watch him sigh in relief, quickly sitting in the cramped row with you. He grabs his jacket from his bag, quickly throwing it on as he lightly kicks his bag under the seat. You raise an eyebrow, but quickly shake your head as you put your headphones back on. After what seemed to be an eternity of waiting, the flight attendant announced that everyone had boarded the plane, and they were ready to take off. The announcement alone made you nervous, so you unconsciously grabbed onto the tiny armrests that were holding you snug into the seat.
The movement immediately caught the attention of the man sitting next to you, and he raises an eyebrow at the sight. He smiles softly, shaking his head as he suddenly takes off his jacket. You both pay attention to the flight attendant as she goes through the safety procedures, but what really threw you off was when she had suggested looking through the safety guide in front of you. Her mentioning what to do in the possible case of crashing had nerves running through your entire body. Crash? Oh god, no. You definitely didn’t want that image in your head. When the flight attendant has finished her presentation, you groan quietly as you feel the plane begin to jerk backwards.
Simply glued to the window, you watch as you pass other planes. Some were smaller, and some were much bigger. Damn, can these things fly around the world? Unbeknownst to you, your seat buddy was also peeking outside of the window in curiosity. I mean, it's not every once in a while that you get to see your city in complete darkness from above… But you wondered if the red eye is even worth the view at that point. Turning to face forward, you jump a bit as you realize the closeness of the man next to you. With your jump, he also flinches quite hard which makes you hold back a laugh.
“Sorry… I just… wanted to see what it looked like before we took off—” His sentence was interrupted by the sudden loud whirring of the engines below, and you immediately grip onto what you thought was the armrest with the force of a thousand bulls. Feeling the plane suddenly move at a rather alarming speed in your opinion, you tighten your grip even more somehow. However, you hear a slight whine from the person next to you… Oh god. You look down at your nails digging into his arm, and you immediately let go. When you try to speak though, you feel your voice slowly fade from existence as you stare at him. All you can do is look like a fish in the moment as you feel the plane slowly lift. But when you no longer feel the weird sudden sickness in your stomach, you snap back into reality.
“Oh my god, I'm so sorry!” You gasp out, and all he can really do is chuckle. “I had no idea, oh my god I just got so nervous because the speed and—“
He holds up a hand, shaking his head as he says; “It’s alright, I have a feeling I’m going to have to get used to it anyways.” With that sentence, you let out a breath that you honestly didn't know you were holding. With a nod, you slowly look back out to the constantly shrinking city lights below you. Well, at least you got the bad part out of the way… For now. As you ascend slowly, you watch as the cabin lights dim, which in turn makes you feel a bit sleepy. You did have to wake up early for work this morning, and you never had a real chance to rest till now. You felt your eyes begin to droop with the lull of the engines, which were at a semi quiet hum.
When you had finally fallen asleep on the shoulder of the man, he couldn’t help but chuckle. You were just *so cute*, and he honestly couldn't get enough of it. Pulling out his phone, he ended up playing a small game of trying to eat other snakes, while trying to stay the biggest. However, when he had gotten eaten, he threw his hands up in frustration, which in turn woke you up with a jump.
“Jay, what the hell was that?!—” You quickly clasp a hand over your mouth, giggling as your boyfriend next to you sighs. You just blew it.
“Y/N! You were doing so well!” Jay whines, his head thrown back a bit as he throws his giant tantrum. Without realizing, he also had gotten eaten for the second time in the midst of it all. You point at his phone, and all he does is sulk while mumbling something about how he’ll ‘never be the biggest’. In return, you pout, arms crossed as you shake your head.
“Hey, I can’t help it when you play that stupid game! You always get too into it, and get mad when you lose! Remember when you played it in the car, and almost made me crash—“
“—Okay, that's enough of that.” He quickly interrupts, taking your hand gently before interlocking his fingers with yours. He gives a reassuring squeeze, before giving the back of it a light kiss. These small actions that he did always made your heart flutter. It was why you had even fallen for him those three Christmases ago.
When you first met, it was in a situation exactly like this one. You both were flying to the states to celebrate Christmas with your families, and he held your hand the entire flight while talking about how he had spent it with some of his friends the day prior. Right then and there, you knew you had to keep contacts with him after that extra long flight. You thanked the higher beings when you had gotten that text only minutes after everyone had deplaned.
‘Hey pretty girl :)’
…And that was the start of it all, you two acting out how you had first met. Except you still had the unrelenting fear of flying. That wouldn’t pass any time soon. As if it was a cue, he could sense your tensed shoulders, and in return held it a bit tighter. You glance over at him, and are immediately met with his gummy smile. The smile that you absolutely love and adore, the one that he knew would lift your spirits.
“So, we have Jake joining us for Christmas this year. He said he was picking us up at the airport as soon as we grabbed our bags.” He hums, using his free hand to trace little circles along the back of your hand; another tactic to calm you down. He knew all of the right things, the small things, and everything in between. While he was babbling about all the plans you two had for the week, you couldn't help but rest your head onto his shoulder again and quickly close your eyes. As soon as you do this, he simply ceases, and rests his head on yours. You immediately relax, and Jay puts on a simple christmas movie to keep himself busy. This Christmas was going to be special, more so than the others.
Especially as he fiddles with the velvet box neatly tucked into his jacket pocket.
This Christmas was going to be special, and so will the rest that you two will share for the rest of your lives.

it's total bullshit I have to go to three different doctors to get the health care I want, but I just emailed my first Psychologist to get my "true tranny" letter of approval (gender dysphoria diagnosis) and I can't help but be hyped. I have to go through a shit ton of red tape but sometime soon I'll be able to start hormones :D
also when I was talking to my doctor about transition, she said "one of my other patients was able to get top surgery pretty quickly after starting hormones." and when I asked "how quickly" she said "two to three years."
if that's considered quick then things really are abysmal out here for us god damn
