@degenerate-mystery-inc-whore and I met on Tinder. And she is by far my best friend on the face of the Earth. I tell people that I’m in a QPR with a girl I met on Tinder, and often CisHet people are quick to ask things like, “Have you kissed,” or, “So you’re basically dating then?”

Sure, once I dressed as Lady Dimitrescu and shoved her against a wall, but that was just one time. Really? What’s amazing about our friendship is her calling me at midnight to tell me about a new Lego-train workaround she found. Or me talking for an hour about my favorite Godzilla films over the phone when I’m lonely. It’s making soup for her when she’s sick, and her making damn certain I eat when finances are tight.

I love her very dearly and I will never regret swiping right on Tinder.

I used to write my friend back and forth until my arthritis did not permit it anymore. She’d send me little doodles, cards, jewelry. And I loved going to the mailbox to get my letter from her. We talked of her kids, and the snakes and reptiles she found around where she lived in the desert. She’d send pictures of them. To me, these were like love letters, handcrafted for me.

Best friends are soulmates, too. ♥️

When he said it, she heard his Henrietta accent for the first time that day: a long vowel and pretty like it rhymed with biddy. In a nearby tree, a cardinal went wheek. wheek. wheek. Adam’s sneakers scuffed on the sidewalk. Blue considered what he had said, and then she considered it some more.

“Pshaw,” she said finally. She felt like when she’d first read his card with the flowers. Weirdly undone. It was like his words had spun tight some sort of thread between them, and she felt like she ought to somehow ease the tension. “But thanks. I think you’re pretty, too.”

He laughed his surprised laugh.

Alessandra sank into the plush cushions of her sofa, the soft glow of the evening light casting a warm hue around her living room. Just as she settled in, her phone lit up, buzzing with the name of her best friends. A smile spread across her face as she answered the call.

“Good evening, ladies!” Vivienne’s cheerful voice chimed through the receiver.

“Hey, Viv! Hi, Juliana!” Alessandra replied, her heart lifting at the sound of their familiar banter.

“Before we dive into the details of my bachelorette party, I have to ask,” Vivienne continued, teasingly. “Alessandra, I saw you and Enzo on the cover of Heat Magazine! Spill the tea! You never mentioned you were going on a date with him.” Juliana jumped in, her excitement palpable. “Yeah, Sandra! Are you and Enzo exclusive now?” Alessandra paused for a moment, contemplating her response. “I’d say so,” she finally admitted, a hint of a blush creeping onto her cheeks. “I had plans to stay home with Kairo and watch TV, but then he texted me. You know about the new karaoke bar opening, right? Well, they plastered our kiss on the front page, and honestly, I didn't like it. Vivienne chuckled knowingly. “Ugh, the paps can be so annoying! That’s why Gabriel and I try to keep our outings low-key unless it’s for appearances.” “Right?” Juliana added, her voice light with laughter. “But I’m so excited that you and Enzo are finally a thing! It’s about time! We could all sense the tension between you two.” Alessandra felt her cheeks heat up even more at the thought of Enzo, a shy smile spreading across her face. "You guys are the best! It's nice to be finally open about it." “Speaking of exciting things,” Vivienne interjected, switching gears with enthusiasm, “I’m hosting a bachelorette party! We’ll be celebrating in Sulani this summer. Mark your calendars for the first weekend in June, ladies! It’ll just be us three on a private island. I promise we’ll have a blast!” Alessandra’s heart raced at the thought of escaping to paradise with her best friends, leaving behind the chaos of their everyday lives. “That sounds incredible! I can’t wait!” she exclaimed, already imagining the sun-soaked beaches and laughter-filled nights. “Perfect! It’s going to be unforgettable,” Vivienne assured them. As the conversation wound down, the ladies exchanged their goodnights.
