Zachary Pleat at MMFA:
The Wall Street Journal’s conservative editorial board, fresh off calling out President Donald Trump for backing down for minor concessions when he delayed his announced tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports, is now explaining to Trump that implementing his tariff vision would devastate the U.S. auto industry.  Industry and economic analysts agree that Trump’s various proposed tariffs would greatly harm the U.S. auto industry, after Trump dubiously warned during the 2024 presidential election of a “bloodbath” in the industry if he wasn’t elected.
Trump warned of a “bloodbath” in the auto industry if he lost the election, but the industry was in great shape under Biden
In March 2024, Trump sparked a controversy by saying during a campaign rally: “Now, if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole — that’s going to be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country.”  Trump’s campaign and media defenders claimed that Trump’s comment was about the auto industry rather than another instance of his violent rhetoric. Even then, Trump was lying. The auto industry was in excellent shape during the Biden administration. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that more people were employed in auto manufacturing late in the Biden administration than at any time since December 2006, with a peak of about 1.03 million Americans employed in the industry under Biden. BLS data also showed that wages throughout the auto industry reached record highs under Biden. Additionally, Trump’s first-term steel tariffs “hampered the U.S. auto industry, sparking the loss of thousands of jobs,” according to PolitiFact.
A Wall Street Journal editorial warned “Trump’s tariffs will punish Michigan”
On February 25, the Wall Street Journal editorial board wrote of a new study that shows how Trump’s tariffs will “damage the U.S. car industry, even as the economy slows and uncertainty spreads.” The Journal continued: “If the goal is to harm U.S. auto workers and Republican prospects in Michigan, then by all means go ahead, Mr. President.”
The Wall Street Journal’s editorial boardpointed out that Donald Trump’s soon-to-be imposed tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports could be destructive to the automotive industry (and the economy as a whole), and the “bloodbath” comments if he lost could end up happening anyway with him as “President.”

On December 30th 1899 the Albion Motor Company was established.
What I love most about this Motor company are than names of the vehicles have a great Scottish connection, The Clydesdale, The Reiver, The Chieftain and The Claymore to name but a few.
The factory was originally in Glasgow, moving to Scotstoun in 1903 and it initially manufactured motor cars until in 1909 when they switched to commercial vehicle manufacture, trucks then buses.
Norman O. Fulton and T. Blackwood Murray founded The Albion Motor Car Company, in Glasgow, in 1902, Albion built it's first commercial vehicle. This simple vehicle was a half-ton van. A development a 3/4 ton van. More models followed, ranging in payload weights up to 2 tons.
Albion continued to build lightweight vehicles, but they built their first 3-4 ton payload commercial, the A10, in 1910.
Having been accepted by the government, some 6000 such examples were built for war service during World War I. This was to become Albions most famous truck, and continued in production until 1926.
As well as trucks Albion also made charabanc, as seen in the two pics showing a 1906 model and a restored 1912 one, aren't they great! The restored charabanc is in the Beamish Museum in Morth East Enfgland. The first charabancs were 12 seaters, they went on to build 20 and 30 saeter versions. The Model 26 30 seater was later to be named 'Viking' took just over 24 hours to complete a non-stop run from Glasgow to London and back in 1925.
From 1928, the Albion rising sun logo, was fitted to radiator tops, and in 1930, the company became Albion Motors Limited.
During World War II, Albion Motors manufactured Enfield No 2 Mk I revolvers to aid the war effort. By 1945, 24,000 revolvers were produced.
Leyland Motors acquired Albion in 1951, ensuring that all Albions used increasing amounts of Leyland components.
Political shifts in the manufacturing bodies of British Leyland dictated that the Albion name would disappear by 1972, although the Scotstoun factory that built them was destined to build medium-weight trucks for LeylTrucks and buses (single- and double-deckers) were manufactured in the Scotstoun works until 1980. The buses were exported to Asia, East Africa, Australia, India and South Africa. Almost all Albion buses were given names beginning with "V", these models being the Victor, Valiant, Viking, Valkyrie, and Venturer.and.
Glasgow born Mark Knopfler's song, Border Reiver, the first cut on his 2009 release,
Southern bound from Glasgow town She's shining in the sun My Scotstoun lassie On the border run We're whistling down the hillsides And tearing up the climbs I'm just a thiever, stealing time In theBorder Reiver.
Sure as the Sunrise’, that's what they say about the Albion

With electric vehicle sales in Canada breaking records every year, the demand is clear, say advocates of EVs.
"There is currently very high interest, and that interest is growing," said Louise Lévesque, director of policy at Electric Mobility Canada, a national industry association that works to advance electric transportation.
Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault last week unveiled the federal government's electric vehicle sales mandate regulations, which include a national target of 100 per cent zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035. In making his announcement, Guilbeault also noted how the Canadian marketplace is already experiencing "a rapid shift toward zero-emission vehicles."
But some observers say the market and demand for EVs is more nuanced, that data shows most Canadians still aren't particularly eager to buy one and that the targets laid out by Guilbeault might be difficult to achieve.
"If we have to get to 100 per cent of new car sales by 2035, the path we're on right now won't get us there," said Niel Hiscox, president of Clarify Group Inc., a Canadian-based automotive research and advisory firm. [...]

How WhistlinDiesel Revolutionized Car Reviews
With automotive content, traditional car reviews have long followed a familiar formula: polished shots of vehicles, technical specifications, and reserved commentary on performance. However, with the rise of platforms like YouTube and social media, this formula has been challenged. One creator who stands out in this shift is WhistlinDiesel. Known for his unconventional and often extreme approach,…

Modern cars do more than get you from Point A to Point B. With sophisticated, internet-enabled onboard computers, they provide vehicle manufacturers with a truckload (pun intended) of data on where you’re driving, what you’re buying, demographic data and more. So what are they doing with all this information? That’s what the newly created California Privacy Protection Agency would like to know, and so it has launched a review of the auto industry’s data privacy practices.
“Modern vehicles are effectively connected computers on wheels. They’re able to collect a wealth of information via built-in apps, sensors, and cameras, which can monitor people both inside and near the vehicle,” said CPPA Executive Director Ashkan Soltani in a statement.
With more than 35 million vehicles on the road in the Golden State, that is a lot of data for these car-makers to scoop up. [And sell!]
The announcement was hailed by advocacy group Consumer Watchdog’s Justin Kloczko, who said in a statement, “These companies know more about us than we know about ourselves, and they’re the ones in control of our personal information, not us.”

Durkduct Flexible Air Ducting Solution for the Automotive Industry
Tumblr media
Durkee textile air ductwork has been applied in the automotive plant since 2008, from industry benchmarks, foreign-invested factories to domestic-owned factories, and from OEM to other automotive accessories producers. So far, all major engineering projects or benchmark enterprises in automobile manufacturing plants have chosen Durkee flexible fabric air dispersion system. Durkee has a group of famous users worldwide, such as Volkswagen, General Motors, Ford, Renault, Fiat, Tesla, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, FAW, SAIC, GAC, Dongfeng, and Geely, etc.
By 2015, all automobile manufacturing industry projects only used Nanosox fabric ducts as the secondary air supply duct with unique properties, such as low space position line or spot air supply for energy-saving, environmental protection, easy installation, and oil resistance, etc. Since 2016, the insulated fabric air duct, which is the unique research and development of Durkee, has been fully promoted in the market.
It has been successfully applied as the primary air supply duct system for automobile manufacturing plants, including Jiangling, General Motors, Faurecia, FAW Toyota, BAIC, Ford, Dongfeng Honda, Geely, GAC Honda, and other projects.
Advantages of insulated fabric duct
Compared with commonly used traditional GI ducts, the advantages of the insulated fabric duct are more obvious:
Lightweight, faster installation
The insulated fabric ducting solution has a 100% factory prefabrication rate and on-site modular assembly, which is light in weight, requiring only slide bars or cable suspension, with zipper connection, greatly improving the quality of the project, shortening the construction period, and reducing the overall cost of the project.
Double insulation layer increases thermal insulation performance
The insulated fabric duct is composed of duct layer, an insulation layer, and an outer insulation layer, achieving a dual-layer insulation effect.
The integral composite insulation material has an infinite vapor resistance factor, which can effectively prevent water vapor penetration, maintain the initial thermal conductivity coefficient, and have a better insulation performance. The thermal resistance value is comprehensively improved. The Durkee fabric duct can effectively reduce cold and heat loss during the air transmission process.
High strength and pressure resistance performance
Different from the easy shearing and pressure deformation of rectangular metal ducts, the insulated fabric duct system adopts circular and elliptical shapes.
The insulated fabric duct can reasonably convert internal pressure into transverse tensile force on the duct wall, which can withstand 3000Pa-5000Pa or more pressure, far higher than the applicable range of traditional ducts below 2000Pa.
The insulated fabric duct system has been successfully applied in more and more primary air supply duct systems and return air duct systems. Durkee has become the leading supplier in the global fabric duct industry with a full range of professional solutions.

there’s a lot of scummy shit going around in the car industry right now, but i think some of the most nauseating shit is car features requiring subscriptions.
cars are not fucking video games or streaming services. they are transportation devices. if the car has a self-tracking feature, or heated seats, or a HUD, then it is built into the car. there is NO REASON to put it behind a paywall lther than companies trying to suck their customer’s wallets dry.
it is becoming more and more clear that automotive companies are caring more about profit margins than they care about providing their customers with safe, comfortable vehicles. and their concerns about a “pleasant driving experience” died out long ago

In case you were wondering, there is nothing new under the sun!
This is exactly the behavior that helped kill the Ford Pinto. Ford did a cost-benefit analysis for armoring the infamously-exposed gas tank. Here's a page from that memo.
Tumblr media
In 1973, Ford valued a human life at $200,000. And then they quietly chose to sacrifice 180 of them.
