The news comes from Anglo-Australian mining group Rio Tinto, which operates mines around the world and hauls the ores across vast distances for processing into iron and other useful materials. The company is proud to announce the debut of its AutoHaul rail network, which does not carry a single human aboard any of the trains.
The fully automated transport system is found in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Rio Tinto operates 16 iron mines and four independent port terminals that load the products aboard waiting cargo ships.
Each AutoHaul train travels nearly 500 miles (800 km) from a mining complex to one of the ports. Including loading and dumping times, a round trip takes about 40 hours.
The world’s first rail network that contains only robot trains
“This is a world first,” a Rio Tinto spokesperson says about the robot trains during an interview. “It is the first fully autonomous, long-distance, heavy-haul rail network in the world.”
The AutoHaul project took several years to complete. It also cost close to a billion dollars. But Rio Tinto believes that the time and money it invested in all that hardware and infrastructure was well worth it. The company is banking on the automated rail network to increase overall efficiency. If there is a sudden demand for more iron and other products, AutoHaul could meet that demand by speeding up the transportation of ores from the mines to the ports. This reduces the chances of a bottleneck in supply, which could drive prices even higher.
Despite its recent inauguration of a train system that doesn’t need a driver or crew, Rio Tinto also promised that it will not lay off any personnel in 2019. So AutoHaul will not be stealing jobs from Australian workers for the time being.
Giving the wheel to robots supposedly makes trains safer and more efficient
When asked about their decision to use robot trains, Rio Tinto spokespersons give several reasons. First, they explain that eliminating the human crew from the equation also removes the need for lengthy driver changeovers at each stop.
Next, a robot driver is reportedly more consistent than a human counterpart when it comes to controlling the train during long trips. This saves additional time, which shortens the travel cycle and increases the amount of trips that could be performed over the same period of time.
Furthermore, turning the wheel over to robots supposedly increases safety for humans. A train driver often needs to travel by light vehicle so that he can meet up with his train to make a changeover. Rio Tinto estimates that drivers travel 932,056 miles (1.5 million kilometers) each year. An AutoHaul train would reduce the need for people to travel so much.
Other safety benefits cited by the company are lower risk at level crossings, the driver-less train immediately complying with speed restrictions, and similarly automatic responses to any accidents that it encounters. The robot train is said to respond much more quickly than humans who might be tired or distracted during the trip.
Trains are not the first vehicles to lose their human drivers. Cars, boats, and even aircraft are being automated. These autonomous vehicles are known to be accident-prone, so what is to say an AutoHaul train full of irone ore isn’t going to go off the rails one day?

World’s First Fully Automated Heavy-Haul Rail System Sees 10% Expansion
World’s First Fully Automated Heavy-Haul Rail System Sees 10% Expansion
The world’s first fully automated heavy-haul rail system, AutoHaul™, in Australia has been expanded by 166km to connect the Rio Tinto’s Gudai-Darri iron ore mine to the existing network. The AutoHaul™ network has gone from 1,700km to 1,866km as part of the greenfield mine development in Western Australia. The AutoHaul™ network enables 220 trains to run autonomously between mines and ports while…

The future we've seen in movies is getting closer

Autonomous freight and Moon 44
I remember when I was younger (gosh, sounds so weird but you get the idea) and saw this movie (yes, I like to watch sci-fi movies no matter if they are B movies) about a moon exploration that was sabotaged and a team of convicts were sent there to investigate the whole thing. Now to our current subject, we have this news:
First autonomous freight train network fully operational announced by Mining Co.
On Friday a mining corporation named Rio Tinto just announced that its AutoHaul autonomous train that operates in Western Australia had logged more than a million km starting from July 2018. This also makes it be the biggest robot in the world (nice, right?).
Few small details: - Mines served: 14 - Port terminals: 4 - Built time: 10 years - Cost: $1.3 billion ($916 million USD) - Remotely monitored: YES (from 1500 km away) - Length of the train: 2.4Km long - Increase in productivity: Yes (1mil since July 28 vs 1.5million / year with drivers dues to shift changes) - Average return distance: 800km - Time for average return: 40 hours
youtube
Now, another interesting thing is that the trains are 6% faster due to the fact that the autonomous train does not break or accelerate like humans do. They tend to do it closer to perfection.
Now, for the comment at the beginning of this article. If we can do more autonomous things, including freight trucks (as seen in another sci-fi movie) and also the fact that in the US there is this trend about freight trucks that will act as a fleet to cut down highway traffic and multiple other projects we probably know nothing about at the moment I think, I really do, that at some point we will start to look up. Truly look up.
Looking up, Dya!

centralised mass production allows for capital intensive investment in logistics, like the AutoHaul trains that carry iron ore in Western Australia:
The autonomous train, consisting of three locomotives and carrying around 28,000 tonnes of iron ore, travelled over 280 kilometres from our mining operations in Tom Price to the port of Cape Lambert. It was monitored remotely by operators from our Operations Centre in Perth more than 1,500 kilometres away.
no human drivers!
In a manual system, every time one driver ends their shift and another comes on board, the train needs to stop. On a typical journey a train will stop three times, adding more than an hour to the journey. The trains that move iron ore from the mines to the port for shipping are 2.4 kilometres long.
"The time-saving benefit is enormous because the train network is a core part of the mining operation. If we can prevent those stoppages, we can keep the network ticking over, allowing more ore to be transported to the ports and shipped off more efficiently," says Lido.
"The other major benefit is safety," he continues. "We are removing the need to transport drivers 1.5 million kilometres each year to and from trains as they change their shift. This high-risk activity is something that driverless trains will largely reduce."
international shipping is so wild because like instinctually your assumption is that it's probably catastrophically bad for the environment but the enormous capacity of the modern cargo ship and the extremely low resistance of being a boat means that even with all the chicanery around burning different grades of fuel in different jurisdictions cargo ships come out extraordinarily efficient per kilogram transported, I think they even beat out trains.
While there are situations where something locally produced or manufactured will have a lower transport carbon footprint than a long distance import, that's by no means certain, especially if you live near a bulk rail station that connects to the coast.
