About the Calendar Wheel
The image on this post is the calendar I made for 2025, based on my location in Boorloo (so-called Perth, Western Australia), on Wadjuk Noongar boodjar.
From the centre, outwards, you'll see:
The 6 Noongar seasons
The 8 seasonal festivals (I've used the common names for the cross-quarters, since I'll probably use this on my business socials)
The 12 months of the year
The 52-ish weeks of the year
The 365 days of the year
The new, full, and quarter moons for 2025
Depending where in the world you're from, you might also notice some things look a little different than you expect...
The wheel is arranged Southern Hemisphere sunwise. Because the sun skewing towards the equator at midday take it to the north, the sun's path over the course of each day appears to move counter-clockwise (because clocks were made based off northern hemisphere sundials).
The quarter-moon icons seem inverted, because we're viewing the moon from a different vantage point. Southern hemisphere moon phases look like:
🌘🌗🌖🌕🌔🌓🌒
Likewise some dates might seem a little off - Astrological events occur at the same instant, regardless of where in the world we are, but how we mark that instant on our calendar will depend on what timezone we're located in (and which side of midnight that timezone places us).
I'm located ~12hrs ahead of the Eastern United States, so a lot of the events above might be the date before for folks in earlier timezones (likewise for folks in Eastern Australia and New Zealand, a handful of events might be the date after if they're in the early a.m.)

Reminder for my Aussie pals: make sure you know your snakebite first aid.
Our snakebite deaths are down to an average of 2-3/yr, most of which occur while bush-walking or gardening, not all of whom are even aware they were bitten.
Antivenoms are excellent nowadays, but you still need to get to a hospital in time!
And yes, very occasionally (but not usually, again, specifically talking about Australia here) it's the result of trying to kill a snake, which is a super-dangerous position to put yourself in - leave the snakes alone! Killing native snakes is illegal in Australia, and should only ever be an absolute last resort. They're just living their life. Make sure you know the numbers for your local snake wranglers 💜
People are so stupid about snakes. If there's a little black racer chilling outside just leave it alone, you don't have to kill it, it's probably dealing with all your pests for you, jesus christ

Note: depending on where in the world you are, check legalities of harvesting or collecting samples of native plants - eg in most Australian states it's illegal to harvest native plants without a permit, full-stop.
Bonus note: if you live somewhere (especially outside of Europe) with a lot of introduced weeds: get to know them and their history!
I used to work as a bush care volunteer at my local botanical gardens at the same time as I was researching for my edition of Culpeper's Herbal and omg so many of the weeds (including a few invasive ones) were written about by Ol' Nicky! A lot were also discussed by Dioscorides and Pliny a good 1600yrs earlier!
So if you're feeling jealous that you can't just go out and wild-harvest herbs with a long history of use in Western medicine and magic... maybe start paying more attention to the weeds ✨
Witchcraft Exercise - Dig Through The Ditches
While we may not all be able to go for a woodsy hike to connect with our local land spirits and find wild herbs, there is always some sort of ecosystem around us. Making that connection and identifying useful plants can be done just about anywhere.
First, identify your region and find a field guide to the local flora. You’ll want something small enough to carry that has color photographs and detailed descriptions. Peterson’s Field Guides makes very good ones for the U.S. Publishers and availability will vary according to location.
Next, take a stroll! Visit your local community park or green space, or just check out the roadside weeds growing nearest your home. There’s always something. If you don’t feel comfortable lingering in one place long enough to analyze the plants on-site, take some pictures on your phone. That way, you can identify and read about them later.
Take notes about the plants you find. What are their magical uses? Is there any folklore connected to them? Were they ever used in medicine? Where where they growing? What sort of feeling did the plant give you (if any)? How do they fit into the local biome? Is it a native species, an introduced one, or an invasive one?
If you happen to find something that might be useful in your craft, you can go back and collect a small sample, provided the plant is not endangered or likely to harm you and is growing in a public space. (State and national parks do not count as public spaces. They’re great for pictures and study, but please refrain from collecting plants there.) When in doubt, leave it be.
I wouldn’t advise using roadside plants for anything you plan to ingest, but they’re still great for spells, offerings, and the burning bowl. A good rinse-and-hang-dry is highly recommended to make sure your specimens are as clean as they can be.
Make sure you label your specimen bundles and any jars you use for storage to make later identification easier. You can press leaves and flowers and tape them into your witchbook, or include illustrations or photos with your notes.
All of this will help you learn about and connect with the land around you, even if you live in an urban or highly developed area. The energy is always around us. We just might need to be still a while and look a little harder to find it.
Happy Witching! 🌿
ADDENDUM:
There are also plant identification apps like PlantNet, Plantifier, LeafSnap, iNaturalist, and SmartPlant that you can install on your phone.
If you’re enjoying my content, please feel free to drop a little something in the tip jar or check out my published works on Amazon or in the Willow Wings Witch Shop.

In response to the 2 Ingredient Microwave Bread (ie microwave damper), I bring you...
Single-Serve Damper!
I haven't tried the recipe linked above to compare them, but any Aussie is familiar with damper - a settler/bush bread, traditionally cooked on campfire coals. Fairly dense, very basic, super-simple.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup self-raising flour
1/4 cup milk
Large pinch of sea salt.
You can make it with just the flour and water, but it's nicer with milk (I believe any kind will work) and a lil salt.
Method:
Pre-heat oven to 200°C (~390°F).
Add flour + salt to a small-ish mixing bowl.
Slowly add milk, mixing in with a knife, until it's all incorporated.
Roll into a ball and score the top (optional: makes it easier to cut/divide once cooked). Brush the top with excess milk.
Place on baking paper on a baking tray and cook for 20min - if you tap on the bottom and it feels hollow, it's good to go!
Tips:
Enjoy with latherings of butter and/or honey/golden syrup. Or use for offerings.
It's a blank canvas! You can mix in herbs, nuts, seeds, fruit, or whatever fits your needs, mood, or intentions!

English:
A true witch must have relics to maximize the effectiveness of her rituals (this isn't mandatory, of course :) witchcraft is an art that can be practiced with just a little self-confidence and willpower):
A ring: The ring is a symbol of fidelity. By wearing a ring, you commit yourself to the magical powers that govern the world. The function of your ritual may require wearing a ring on different fingers. It is preferable that it be made of metal (gold, silver, copper, iron, bronze, etc.). The ring represents time, reflection, habit…
The athame, the wand: One way to "guide" magical forces is to use an athame/wand to draw magic circles. Once sanctified, it is possible to personalize this artifact. The key is to consecrate the magical object.
The cauldron: It may seem cliché, but the role of the cauldron (or any other large, broad container) is essential. A cauldron is used to prepare herbal mixtures, liquids but also to burn incense. It can also be culinary provided that it is of a certain size and unique (it is necessary to hear another cauldron if the first serves as a pestle). It symbolizes abundance, wealth.
The ouija board: Artifact necessary to practice necromancy or divination with magical forces. The pendulum: also for divinatory purposes, the pendulum relies more on magical forces or radiations. It can be made of metal or crystal.
Sacred candles: Also for rituals, it is more of a recurring object in rituals than an artifact. They are still important and a certain quality is necessary. Their number / color varies according to the ritual.
The magic mirror: A certain caution is necessary with the mirror. Allows to "contact" the spirit world, the afterlife. It is recommended not to stay too long in front of the mirror during a ritual. Superstition or not, it must still be handled with the utmost care.
The grimoire / book of shadows: While not essential, it is nonetheless recommended. A certain quality is required, however. It allows you to record spells, rituals, but also impressions and experiences. It can be a kind of witch's diary.
Here's a quick summary of the items highly recommended for practicing magic. Their usefulness will depend on the witch's specialization.

Call me Aranea or Ara, a 23 yr old Aussie gal who is ever so slowly working on her novels. Not picky on what pronouns you use for me. I've been writing since I was 14, and been on and off tumblr just as long.
Working part time, and studying a few courses. Also practice witchcraft. Own a German Pointer named Millie (who has her own tag (#millie))
Current interests: Dragon Age, Dragons Dogma, Mass Effect, Skulduggery Pleasant, and Vampyr. I also play the Sims 4, so might even post some of my characters that way.
Favourite genres: Fantasy, horror, paranormal, science fiction, and historical.
Other platforms: AO3
Personal tag: #ara rambles

⥉ About This Blog ⥉
Open to asks about my OCs, world lore, or just wanting to drop in and have a chat!
Mainly using this blog to share lore, snippets of my novels, things that amuse me and worldbuilding.

Current Novel WIPs:
Monstrum (Which, yes, is loosely based on my fanfic under the same name) A God who never wanted to be a God, sea elves, sapphic dwarven Goddess, polyamory is pretty much the norm, cursed tome that exploded a temple, MC works out he's a transman... What more could you want? Oh wait, there's one more thing: son of God who died multiple times and came back wrong each time, is currently possessing MC's meant-to-be-dead mother! Oops.
Quondam
Takes place centuries before Monstrum, when The Maker was only a sorcerer who wanted a better world... and now deals with the consequences of taking over as Sovereign of the World. Surely she can change her world without destroying it?
[Un-named]
Crash landing on a unknown planet, memories wiped... The A.I. with corrupted data, known as Thio, calls them Viator, but is that their name? Or a title? The only thing Viator knows is that they were thrown into a black hole... and now have a ship to fix, and to find civilisation.

⥉ DNI ⥉
Pro-contact paras, anti-lgbtq, anti-otherkin/therian

Art of my Yuusona, Soleil Yuvi 💖
The closest thing you'll get to a face reveal as it's mostly based off my irl appearance! (This art is like 2 years old though and kinda crusty but I still really like it???)
Some little fun facts: 1) The jackal headband is something I own IRL because my witchcraft loving self works with Lord Anubis 2) In my Yuusona's lore, it got the starburst scars from being ripped across worlds 3) Tbh that make-up is REALLLYY tame for me lmao. I typically go about my day looking like my eyes have been pummeled by someone's fists with how fucked I do my eyeshadow 4) My Yuusona would totally be best friends with Jade, since they both love mushrooms. I can see it talking to Rook too and any other character that would let it yap about Fun Science Things and Cool Death Facts 5) Would constantly be begging Crewel to let them do dissections for science (Just like I did in high school... God, I was a weird kid) 6) Uses resting bitch face to it's advantage because it likes to pretend to be mysterious... However as soon as someone talks to it, it starts yapping for ages super happily 7) Righty, here I go, coming out as Australian. Y'all can now have the pleasure of reading anything I say in a good ol' Aussie accent. (side note: I used to say youse instead of y'all but American media changed me 💔) 8) Secretly a gym rat but only works out alone at home because public gyms suck
#yuusona#twst oc#sol ❤️speaking#solXartist#YES i will be adding it to the selection of muses on this blog#so feel free to send in an ask for it :3333
