I drew the probably no longer junior archivist, Theia!

I started really liking how this was turning out right around when I got the Light Dragon's shape and the texture overlay right.

I made all of the imagery be… well, kind of ambiguous, I guess? Because at this point we don't have a totally clear view of what she's up to, and it's looking like she doesn't want anyone to know, either!

I reæally wish Tumblr wouldn't apply anti–aliasing to these drawings I do with a crisp pixel brush. I'll look into it, maybe it's toggleable?

Surviving A Lesser Of Two Evils

“N-no. But I-”

“Great! Teaching you will keep me sharp.”

Theia learns just what Shrike’s ‘teaching’ consists of.

“OOF!” Theia tumbled to the ground just like she had many times before. She had a black eye forming as one of the many bruises she’d acquired, the bandages on her hand were dirty and covered in blood again after a previous wound reopened, and that cut on her knee was definitely going to scar.

“Again.” The tall, blond-haired human in front of her said, her voice leaving no room for argument.

Theia gritted her teeth, hands trembling as she tried to lift herself back onto her feet. Almost immediately, a small section of the stone beneath her left foot rose up, knocking her far off balance and causing her to hit the ground hard enough to knock the wind out of her.

“Get back up.” Shrike insisted.

“At least…” Theia managed to say between gasps for air, “let me… catch my breath…”

“In a real fight, you won’t have any time to catch your breath. You’re leaving yourself open for me to do this.”

Before Theia could react, Shrike leapt to the other side of her downed opponent and soon had both hands on Theia’s shoulders, pushing down hard enough that Theia grimaced against the bruising pressure.

“Push me off, and get up.” she snarled.

Theia’s hands shook against Shrike’s grip, but she barely moved the older human’s arms that had almost her entire body weight behind them.

Several moments of trying later, Theia’s arms gave out on her, falling exhausted to the ground.

Shrike shook her head. “Disappointing.”

Then, she finally let go, moving away from Theia and back towards the bounty hunters’ camp.

Theia let out a relieved sigh, fully soaking in the moment of respite, despite how brief it would probably be.

“Don’t you think you’re pushing her too hard?” She heard one of the other bounty hunters ask.

“Good fighters are made under pressure.” Was all Shrike said in response.

Theia barely stopped herself from scoffing. It’s obvious you just like the feeling of power. She tried to sit up, but quickly decided against it at her shoulders’ protests.

She put a hand over her face in frustration, then winced as she accidentally touched the skin around her hurting eye. Lady help me, she thought, as if the silent prayer would mean anything if she didn’t actually send it to the Light Dragon, which she refused to do.

She’d let the avatar of the Dark Dragon into the archives. Yes, he’d tricked her into doing so, but… she still let him in. She’d allowed herself to be deceived under the pretenses of ‘proving the Void Dragon’s existence’. She didn’t have the right to ask the Lady for help, hadn’t even been able to bring herself to use Light magic when it would’ve been helpful.

The only way she could make up for it, was to go after that aristocratic magus and face him herself. And she had a plan on how exactly she’d go about it.

One that probably wouldn’t work if she got herself beaten to a pulp before she even got there.

It was now that Theia would’ve gone to another of her fellow devotees for aid, or even to the Lady herself. She wanted to, and she could really, really use the support.

For what might’ve been the thousandth time since it happened, the Dark Dragon’s show of power in the storm played in Theia’s mind. Black energy erupting from the Elemental Magus like another explosion, destroying everything in its vicinity. The horror that overtook Theia as she realized what she’d done. And the determination to fix her mistake.

Theia clenched her fists and forced herself to stand up. It was significantly easier now that she’d had time to catch her breath, though her body still ached from the ‘lesson’.

She had to keep going. And if these damned bounty hunters were how she would find and confront the Dark Dragon’s avatar, then so be it.

Approaching the camp, Theia immediately went to where first aid supplies were stored, something she’d gotten very familiar with by now.

Sora, one of the other bounty hunters, sat next to the cart with the group’s supplies. They tossed Theia a roll of bandages when she approached.

“Thanks,” Theia sat down next to Sora, who by this point she’d identified as one of the nicer of the ruthless bounty hunters. Just as cutthroat, but definitely less likely to attack the first person they saw just because it looked like they might benefit from turning them in.

“You actually learnin’ any fightin’ skills?” Sora asked.

Theia pursed her lips. “Not really.”

“Eh, you probably learn different from her, then.” Sora shrugged. “I wouldn’t get too upset. She used to be a gladiator, did’ya know?”

“I didn’t, but that does explain a lot.”

“Yeah, Shrike thinks a trial by fire’s the best way to learn.” They offered a hand while Theia replaced the wrappings around her injured palm. “I agree mostly, though I still think it’s better if you know how to pass that trial in the first place.”

Theia was very well aware of the importance of having all the relevant knowledge and being prepared. She’d trained and studied much in her dedication to the position of archivist, and it had served her well. What was the point of getting thrown into a lake when you didn’t know how to swim? You were far more likely to survive if you at least knew the basics of keeping your head above water.

“Tell you what,” Sora stood up and stretched their arms above their head. “Lemme know when you’re all patched up and feelin’ better, and I can give you some pointers. Let’ya have a better chance of not gettin’ your ass kicked as much.”

“I’ll think about it.” She would probably take them up on that, if it gave her a better chance.

“Cool. See ya then.” Sora sauntered off to do their own thing while Theia tied off the last of her bandages. All that was left was to patch the tear in her pant leg over the knee, which was especially difficult with her hurt hand.

It’ll all be worth it, Theia told herself, I’m going to make things right.

The magus should never have tricked me, and I’m going to prove it.

Yeah I definitely got scared for Theia when Shrike mentioned teaching her how to fight. I mean, this lady was a gladiator and thought it was great! I really, really doubt she'd be a healthy teacher. Especially for Theia who clearly isn't in a great place emotionally.

This is another one where it was really hard coming up with a title, so much so that it delayed me posting it for a while as I figured it out (unless I wanted to leave it with the filler title "Shrike is a bad teacher")

Eos

Eos is the personification and goddess of the dawn in Greek mythology. She is the daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia and the sister of Helios (Sun) and Selene (Moon). Dressed in a saffron-coloured mantle, Eos rides on her chariot in front of Helios to announce the coming of the day. A common epithet for Eos was "rosy-fingered".

Cursed by Aphrodite to fall in love continually, Eos had many love affairs with beautiful mortal men, most of whom had tragic ends due to her attentions. Eos is depicted as a radiant goddess with soft hair, and rosy arms and fingers. Eos' Roman equivalent is Aurora.

Birth & Family

As mentioned in Hesiod's (c. 700 BCE) Theogony, Eos was the daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia, the sister of Helios (Sun) and Selene (Moon), and the granddaughter of Uranus (Heaven) and Gaia (Earth).

And Theia, mastered by Hyperion, Bore Helios the great, bright Selene, And Eos, who shines upon all men on earth And on the deathless gods who hold broad heaven. (Hesiod, Theogony, 372-375).

Eos was first married to Astraeus, a Titan and god of the dusk. Together they had the four Anemoi (wind gods): Boreas (North Wind), Zephyrus (West Wind), Notus (South Wind), and Eurus (East Wind). Some sources, including Hesiod, say that they were also the parents of Phosphorus and the stars. Eos was also the mother of Memnon, the king of Ethiopia who fought in the Trojan War.

THE MENTION OF THE MEANINGS OF THE FLOWERS IN AURYNN'S LETTER OMYGOD!!! AS SOMEONE WHO LOVES FLORIAGRAPHY THIS MADE ME REALLY EXCITED AS MINOR AS IT MAY BE LIKE FLOWERS ARE SO AMAZING TO ME!!! WE LOVE FLOWERS IN THIS HOUSE!!

So now I have to ask, in universe is there a sort of language of flowers? O.o And by extension what is everyone's favorite flowers? :3 (siblings and RO's)

Heheheh >:3 I love flowers too (spring is my favorite season 🌸🌺���🌹🌻🌼) and I ended up doing a bunch of research into flower meanings and medicinal uses etc for this lol. Expect to see a lot more floriography in the game! (and if anyone has read one of the POVs on Patreon, they might recognize those flowers in that letter and some of the intended meanings behind them 👀)

In universe, a lot of the flower language follows various irl floriographies but there is some in-universe specific stuff too, like irises in Theia being used for funerals to guide the dead into the afterlife and so representing death, vision, guidance, transformation, renewal etc. So it also does vary a bit between countries. Plus they have some mythology stories surrounding certain flowers and that affects some of their meanings/associations too. 🪷🪻🌼🥀💐

As for everyone’s favorites:

Kieran: Might be considered rather plain for a prince/ss, but they didn’t grow up royalty: golden yarrow—its abundant in Celestyl and they like the taste in certain festival foods/drinks. Nostalgic to them—they didn’t have an easy childhood by any means but it was much simpler. They wouldn’t admit it but they sometimes wish they could go back to how things were.

Nihm: Loves flowers—they attract insects! They’re pretty familiar with a lot of plants and their relationships with different insect species, so it’d be hard for them to pick just one fave. They find species that have very specifically evolved alongside insects most interesting, like spider and hammer orchids.

Lilith/Lucien: Flowers are their language, so they are fond of and well-versed in flowers. I can’t tell you their fave cuz it’s spoilery but I’ll tell you one of their other faves: Amaranth. Symbolizes immortality, eternal love, undying devotion, hope, resilience, determination. A good reminder.

Aurynn: Hasn’t really ever put much thought into it. I wouldn’t really say he has a favorite, but perhaps the flower that holds the most significance to him would be red poppies. Symbolizes sleep, peace, death.

Samira: Lavender—it was one of her Pa’s favorites and she likes the smell. Plus it’s quite useful. She does also have a fondness for weird/poisonous/carnivorous plants as well. A Theian Desert Thorn holds the most significance to her now, given what transpired in her hometown, and serves as a reminder: appearances can be deceiving.

Parim: Celosia/cockscomb—it looks like a feather :3 and it’s a festival favorite

Aurora: Saffron crocus—grows abundantly in the palace gardens. And it’s her fave color—purple.

Castor: Water lilies/lotus—very calming. Liked watching them float down the Thiss during festivals.

Ember: Sundews. They’re carnivorous >:)

Nour: Sunflowers—they’re big and bright and happy and always follow the sun. And Nour has fond memories eating sunflower seeds with their siblings.

Farah: Pom flowers—she loves pomegranates. And her brothers used to have to help her get them open and scoop out the seeds for her.
