okay two versions of mafia dazai x ada kunikida + their adopted son atsushi
one
dark era
ok this would probably end up being an accidental fix it but um anyway
picture this, dark era dazai wandering around thinking up a new way to commit suicide
kunikida on his way back to the ada office after a mission
and atsushi who has managed to escape the orphanage and now is wandering in a new town
atsushi meets dazai while dazai's trying to drown himself like in canon
atsushi meets kunikida who notices a small starving kid drag someone out the river and immediately rushes to help
at this point kuni and dazai dont know each other
anyway
kunikida takes atsushi to eat and the drowning man is also there; they talk; atsushi is sweet
dazai's like "starving child do u wanna come with me" while kunikida is also inviting him to come w/ him to find a place to stay
now u might think why would dazai do this well idk something about a small child starving and exhausted but still finding in himself to help a stranger even tho itll leave him wet and cold was so surprising he didnt know what to do
and kunikida is just... kunikida and idk he's a nice guy
anyway
dazai and kunikida both argue atsushi should come with them and dazais like this guys probably right but its funny to see him riled up
anyway so theyre like okay whatever atsushi wut do u want
and atsushi, sweet tiny traumatized atsushi, doesn't wanna upset these ppl who seem so nice so he says both
and so the custody agreement starts
at first dazai doesn't tell anyone about atsushi becuz um who would want to admit they adopted a child to rile up a hot blond but
eventually as dazai and kunikida grow close to atsushi and to each other they find out about their jobs
kunikida is not happy about letting his son (whos only 4 years younger than him) live with mafia ppl around and makes dazai swear to protect him and dazais like okay fine ig
anyway
the only ppl who know atsushi in the mafia are oda and ango becuz um besties
chuuya knows somethings up but he hasnt quite figured it out
akutagawa has met atsushi but he doesn't know about atsushi and dazai
he does know this sweet kid who always greets him with a smile is under shared custody over two guys his brother who call themselves his dad but ya
atsushi isnt hiding it he's just shy around his first ever crush
anyway
atsushi loves the ada and fully wants to join but he also loves dazai but he has no desire to be with the mafia sense dazai has never let him meet anyone in the mafia while theyre on the clock if that makes sense
so essentially as my tags of the last post said
atsushi is the child of divorce that has to constantly move in between homes
but his parents are four years older than him
and not divorced becuz they arent even dating yet
and also he's accidentally the reason theyll ever get together
and also his homes r two rival organizations
anyway the fix it part comes from dazai having his in law family to help out when mimic comes but do with that what u will
and also same concept but theyre all older

Honestly, I don't know how Asagiri is going to do it, but Dazai will live. I am absolutely, hundred percent confident that this petty son of a bitch will not get upstaged by Fyodor fucking Dostoevsky. It's like those kid's games where one of them's like "I killed you with my laser beams" and the other is "Oh but I had a mirror and it reflected the beams back at you" and so on and so forth. To the extent where it actually made me facepalm.
So yeah, Sigma will be fine, Atsushi will be fine, and Dazai will be fine. And even if, even if he isn't, they will get the other side of the page and make everything fine. I trust in Aya and Bra-chan. I trust in the table. And I trust that the laws of physics will be thwarted.

okie dokie!! So Alexander is an adopted kid of a wealthy Vampire family tho he was human up until he was 15, he has a heart transplant that failed so his mother made him a vampire, he wasn't a favorite outside of his mother, his older sister and brother in law hate him, he's dad hate him, and his bio parents are hard to find, when he turned 27 (because they age until 50, immortally don't mean he ain't getting gray hair) he got kicked out of the house momma not happy about it and is devoicing her husband fot that but anyways he goes to college to be an architect he meets this werewolf couple Jade and Eric, they're def bi4bi and it is Everyone problems lol but they become best friends that Eric tells Alex he's sterile so he helped them have a baby, little Richard or Richie, but the couple had him in December and driving home they died in a car crash but the baby lives so alex took him ofc and Richard is spoiled and loved by alex and alex mother his grandmother, but alex keep jade and eric memories alive so his kid knows his parents unlike him (shady adoption center) and there's rp alex who happens to find love, Oc world alex who married two humans Elizabeth and James, and there's another alex who doesn't want love just raising his son
And I might change it for other Alex to maybe have his best friends and they all raise the kid queerplatonic (well with Alex because like, I do enjoy a good one of those) but I love my tragic blonde beanpole AND I WILL DRAW HIM BECAUSE I HAVE TO HE'S MY BOY I have to draw a lot of my ocs all..... Looking.... 68 of them and growing lol
OH and he has a major sweet tooth his little sunshine (son) loves sweets but can't finish them so he does and he loves them
Hello??? Your OC lore is insane??? what the hell??? I need you to draw Alexander like Asap so I can draw him please and thank you /hj
BUT NO NO I LOVE THE IDEAS OF VAMPIRES STOPPING AGEING AFTER A CERTAIN AGE like it's something I 100% incorporate into my vampire lore because YEAH-
now I'll give you OC lore back!! Silly Madi OC lore under the cut cause I'm shy
All I can offer you right now is OC lore of my favorite Enby Vida Alegría!! This isn't usually their look but I had their doodle page open so I figured might as well test out a hair cut on them!!
Here's what they actually look like normally
but yeah they're my Enby Ace Florist OC who ends up dating my sunshine boy OC Atsushi!! They're a ex-skater kid who got kicked out by their parents when they were in high school and they now run a flower shop with their best friend, cousin, and aunt.
They're Atsushi's soulmate and they are both foolishly smitten for each other it's kinda funny like Atsushi was sooooo nervous to ask them out and to go on the first date that his sister figure had to lock him out of their shared apartment so he wouldn't be late it's so silly.
They're definitely a highlight of Atsushi's life, cause this is Atsushi's first partner after a really bad ex-girlfriend hence the nerves about asking them out and going on a date, but Vida's been really understanding and kind to him that it all works out. It helps he gets a kiss goodnight from them after that date and blue screened for a solid few minutes outside his apartment.
Just they're my sweet couple who I love thinking about while falling asleep because they're so soft and care about each other and RAGGHHHHH-
#Madi's art :>#Sluggy :D!!#THANK YOU FOR RAMBLING ABOUT ONE OF YOUR OCS TO ME#also the biggest mood ever I have wayyyyy too many OCs to draw and talk about it's kinda a problem actually#ask any of my friends I have too many and depending on which friends I'm talking to some don't even know about certain ones#it's a whole thing like god#Madi Answers#Madi rambles#I could go on more about any of my OCs so genuinely Sluggy if you ever just wanna come in here and drop OC lore I'll trade you some of my O#lore as well it would be so silly#this also applies to any of my other friends

BSD godly parents pt.4 - ADA (pt.2)
Who would be the godly parents of the rest of the Armed Detective Agency members if they were demigods from PJO?
Kyouka: I think she would probably be a child of Hades, since she reminds me of Nico, having lived a life of darkness and tragedy, but also managing to overcome her past while still acknowledging it as a part of herself. Also Demon Snow has underworld vibes.
Kenji: If we focus on his ability to determine his godly parent, then he would probably be a son of Kratos the god of strength or Bia the goddess of force. However, if we determine his godly parent based on his personality and interests, I don't think anyone would argue that he is a child of Demeter (Personally I prefer this interpretation over the first one).
Atsushi: If he wasn't a boy, I would have classified him as a hunter of Artemis because of his association with the moon and because tigers are hunters in the wild. But since that's not an option I had to come up with a different idea for him, which I found surprisingly hard. The best I could come up with is that his mother could be Hebe, the goddess of youth and forgiveness. My reasoning for this is just that Atsushi tends to be really forgiving to anyone other than himself (most notably Kyouka and to a certain extend even the headmaster).
Kunikida: I didn't really think that any of the well known gods really fit him, so I did a bit of googling, and there is a goddess named Eunomia. She is a minor goddess of law and legislation and according to Wikipedia her name translates to "good order" or "governance according to good laws". If we think of "laws" in this context meaning Kunikida's ideals then this could be really fitting for him.
Katai: I think he would be either a child of Hypnos, because he basically never leaves his Futon or a child of Athena because of his intelligence (specifically when it comes to machines).

Reading PP Providence spoilers has depressed me. I have mixed feelings about the movie, I suppose I can have a proper think about it only after I see the movie (it’s not available yet in my country). Read ahead at your own risk of being spoiled. This is a vent/commentary.
Shinya being a reckless fool is consistent enough…I’m pretty sure I’m going to break down crying during some of his scenes, especially the ones with Saiga. I am hoping for some Kou Gino content as well, the tension between my best boys has me nervous. I am curious to see how it turns out, the tension could be felt between them in S3 so we don’t know if it’s fully resolved or not. I know that Ginoza has a right to be angry at Shinya and my heart goes out for those two, their relationship was complicated from the start. The prodigal son returning to face those he left behind, it’s obvious that people are angry at him.
About Shinya especially, apart from the fact that he’s weighed down by the ghost of Makishima, depressed and losing his sense of purpose, being used as a tool for war and being haunted by multiple deaths and wars, being turned from a detective to a killing machine it is a tragic journey. From some of the stuff I read in S3 novels and Gino’s reaction to their reunion, Shinya must be feeling incredibly alone. But is he ever going to heal? Knowing that Professor Saiga is dead and that Shinya goes to jail for killing Tonami… I don’t know if that’s even possible. There was no mention of Makishima’s ghost either but I like to think he’s still being haunted, after all Sinners Case 3 and Providence occur back to back.
As for Akane’s part, I’m more concerned that she took that step to shoot Kasei I do not understand her reasoning yet but I can understand her grief and anguish. She’s suffered, losing her friend, her grandma and she’s faced with the inability of doing anything against the System while working under it.
But the whole Atsushi Shindo angle strikes me as strange. In S3 novel translation, Akane is typing out her reflections about the System, from the very beginning I felt that Kei and Arata were planted by Akane because it’s a part of her plan to bring down the System by replacing it with something better, and I ventured a guess that the System caught on and this was why she was imprisoned but with Providence spoilers I am confused as to why that was never her goal and she took such an action. The plot doesn’t make sense to me yet.
Her motivations and beliefs turning to a degree where she violates the law for her personal sense of justice strikes me as odd and uncharacteristic. Because make no mistake, Shinya and Akane though have a similar outlook on the System react to it in very different ways.
Shinya uses his rage against the System to rebel against it. His sense of justice is deeply personal and rooted in his emotions and he’d rather bear the burden of his sin of killing alone than have anyone else share it for him. He’d repeatedly break the law and handle things his way.
Akane uses her judgment, her intuition of ethics in the law to make her decisions. Her process is slow but it’s fuelled by her conviction alone of what the law truly is. Not the systems or the provisions but the collective belief of people and she knows that using violence against violence will only create more chaos.
Which is why it strikes me as odd that Akane of all people would take this step. Regardless, she technically avenged Kagari. I also somewhat dislike the fact that Shinya is required to step in and protect her, because I believe Akane is strong enough to protect herself (2015 Akane and Sinners of the System Akane is my favourite) Shinya was not by her side all this time and she suddenly isn’t a damsel in distress…in any manner of speaking. From the context of the spoilers it might be that the story is a commemoration of S1 Psycho Pass so there are multiple parallels and callbacks to S1.
Other than that, I’m curious about the Stronskaya document, how does it tie in with being a threat to Sibyl? S3 had no mention of this, with all the crazy things going with Bifrost so are these two related? Or is this document a way to put an end to the System that the Peacebreakers tried to exploit?
Have they elaborated about the MFA’s motivations? Frederica is someone that I am extremely curious about especially since she talked about changing the shape of the world and has previous enforcer’s affected by the System working for her. From the workings in Sinners, I felt as though the MPSWB and MFA had come to an agreement to phase out the System without alerting it. I believed that was why Hanashiro scouted Shinya, so that he could aid her with his skills to bring an end to Sibyl.
Saiga in Providence does state that: Justice has many sides.
Since the very beginning our protags pursued their own interpretation of justice and the law. We see Ginoza trying not become like his father but ultimately becoming a victim to the System, loyally helping out Akane and staying by her side to keep an eye on her. We see Akane trying to reform the System by leading a team of Inspectors and Enforcers that’s based on trust and respect, on treating latent criminals like humans. We see Shinya giving in to his personal sense of justice, fuelled by his sense of pride and betrayal at the System for failing Sasayama, because it let someone like Makishima get away.
What I want to see is the dynamic between the MPSWB and the MFA, working to take down the System and the deeply philosophical questions to still underline the plot. That is the Psycho Pass that I ended up enjoying.
I’ll be clear, I’m not a fan of shipping…(yes I self-ship but that is a different matter. I do it for my enjoyment) I’m more interested in the dynamics between the Golden Trio and the deep rooted reflections on society and human life, A.I and socio-political criticisms and the personal philosophies of the characters.
Okay vent over. On another note, will we ever get to see an interaction between Shinya and his mom? Is Tomoyo ever going to scold her brat of a son for putting his friends through such pain? For running away? Despite all his faults I also want him to feel some affection and love and feel validated, my man is too depressed, the smoking and drinking is going to end him soon regardless, if the guns don’t get to him first.
Shinya is such an idiot.

ep13 i just googled something and yeah that's the finale :3
oh so the hunting dogs have principles??? i thought they were just feral honestly lmao. thats good woohoo
maybe they're just batshit cause the agency are considered terrorists now and once their name gets cleared they're gonna start passionately making out with them instead and then fuck off for another several years
is teruko like a shapeshifter??
she can also shapeshift others it looks??? or is it just age......
oh so her ability allows her to control age :33
does this just mean she regularly beats the shit out of toddlers and the elderly cause if so that's funny as fuck and +1 point to teruko
SHE DOES LMAO
shut up about the waitress dazai you haven't brought anything into this anime aside from pain and misery. the closest you were ever to being remotely likeable was when you were a port mafia executive with over 300 confirmed kills performing the zipper move on your useless stooge and his shit creature everyday and even then i couldn't forgive you as a slight against akutagawa is punishable by death in my eyes anyway
"can such a thing even be called human" shut the fuck up dazai don't you dare call my beautiful son sigma a thing. he's trying his best ok
sigma voted for most competent cringefail
WHOOPSIE TERUKO UHH. HANG IN THERE!!!! still on sigma's side though lmaoo
oh so she injured her ears now?? also if that stopped the sound waves from reaching her brain and exploding it or whatever. then how does she hear sigma rn. are these sounds like differenr or what or do i not get something about anatomy and shit idk
"the hunting dogs superhuman physical prowess is the result of surgery carried out by doctors with special abilities. but the inhuman nature of the surgeries made them such that, if we miss even one of the monthly follow-up surgeries, our flesh rots and we die" are you. okay
both sigma and teruko should be allowed to do whatever they want tbh. let them make peace and hold hands and skip thru the meadow together
ATSUSHI TO THE RESCUE??? LET'S GO ATSUSHI GET YOUR FURRY BROTHER
ooooh so sigma stabbed taneda...... leave him aloneee he's just a little guyy. he's just a little guyyy
:((
oh hi priest guy whose name i forgot
ok now atsushi and sigma listen to me young men join forces to beat the shit out of him there is nothing stronger in this world than two therians fighting paw in paw-
itll be good bonding experience i swear
sigma go join the sskk polycule. this is an order
nooooo bbg don't kill yourself :((((((
not all is lost ango because uhhh. uh. i said so :)))) and my word is absolute
THE AMONG US FILE
ooooooooh tachihara's gonna know now?? can we trust the boy????? he will never be a man to me. unless he atones for his sins against yosano
oh he won't :(((( so called free-thinkers when
oooooh or maybe he is a free-thinker after all...... he broke out of the
not all is lost because i said so :))))
OH HIROTSU AND GIN ARE ALIVE!!!!!!!!!! DO THE EPIC DANCE EVERYBODY
oooooooh he didn't want to really kill them <3333 tachihara who do you prefer. the hunting dogs (ew) or the wholesome mafia momence (yippiee)
fyodor and dazai arguing about god
i saw nikolai's face for a moment there...... buddy bestie pal i miss you dudeeee
wholesome mafia momence <3 we should forgive them all the mafia is too wholesome to be evil. who the fuck are yosano and kyouka
ooooooooh AND he spared yosano <3 tachihara gaining a lot of focus this season i'm not complaining
OOOOH the loophole...... tachihara is not the law enforcement/investigative body because he's a member of the port mafia through and through thus he won't dismiss it <33
let's go tachihara
NIKOLAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE'S ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE'S HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NIKOLAI BUDDY I MISSED YOU AND YOUR SHIT EATING GRIN
and that's it for s4 smash that like and subscribe for mo
anyway bsd season 4 let's go gamers
ep1:
still waiting for chuuya to get unbooked. notify me immediately once he gets unbooked i can't take thsi
oh hi fukuzawa. put his wrinkles back on ffs
fukuzawa and ranpo flashback episode pretty please??
LET'S GOOOOOOO
oh oda's the assassin?? killer baby
ranpo voice heard my waters are cropped
i do not accept ranpo being the same age/older than oda. i will not accept this. let oda be like. 30+ or whatever
whys ranpo giving me ouma vibes in this outfit
ranpo don't care sunglasses emoji
oh yeah i had the feeling the secretary was the killer from the moment ranpo walked in lmao. now danganronpa execute him
coolest kid you've never met
good for ranpo for getting kicked out of the police after exposing all their shit as a teenager
snitch ranpo we love to see it it's okay if he does it he can do whatever he wants forever he's never been wrong in his life
orphan lore
oh he's 14 now. baby
"well done for today-" "that's it?? you're talking to a 14-year old who lost his parents his job and his future. thats all you got??" yes ranpo go fight for that sympathy points make that old man cry and shake from guilt
he's so sillyyy......... "*2 seconds after walking out the door* help me mister bodyguard i don't have work or a place to stay im going to die" yes ranpo go fight for that house and income pluck that old man out of everything he got (morally correct). i love how it literally works and fukuzawa says yeagh sure every time
with every single minute ranpo is on screen. i swear. with every single damn frame of that guy he gets more and more npd. like. that is a narcissist. you wrote a narcissist and made him the coolest most swag guy in the anime. and that's not even mentioning that guy's massive fucking autism and adhd
is this gonna be like rain code chapter 2 where where-
fukuzawa sweating voice damn that kids a genius and also deeply deeply unnerving why is he so op in the smarts stats what happened in his early childhood to ruin him forever like this
and ranpo's utterly clueless to that too he just thinks everybody else is an idiot or just acting real weird and hiding what they know for some reason.
"ive only just met you so i don't know much but- *lists his entire fucking biography*"
LEAVE THE BOY ALONE YOU KNOCKED HIM OVER FUKUZAWA YOU MONSTER!!!!!!!!!!! YOU WILL ALWAYS BE A CRUEL AND WICKED PERSON YOU WILL DESTROY EVERYTHING YOU TOUCH YOU HAVE NOT AND NEVER WILL CHANGE IN A MEANINGFUL WAY. CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'D DO THIS...............
oh ok he apologized. but can he ever truly be forgiven........
the hat :)

as young children
featuring: some ADA + no abilities
a/n: so I've been rewatching The Return of Superman because someone needed a little bit of wholesome comfort and the first Naeun episode where the male MC was like, "daughters wake up their dads with kisses while my son wakes me up by slapping my face" I was like, sounds like smthn Fukuzawa would say
In an alternate timeline where Fukuzawa Yukichi's hobby of adopting and taking care of kids is his day job. (Or not really a job. He still doesn't get paid for it). And no. He doesn't get woken up with kisses either.
Edogawa Ranpo
Wakes Fukuzawa up by sitting on his face (and possibly farting)
100% whiny kid who will only be quiet when stomach is full OR when suddenly put in a group of strangers of the same age
Social anxiety goes up higher than his ego
Fukuzawa is convinced Ranpo's been drinking juice his entire life just because of how much he consumes it. He breathes sugar
Messy kid but surprisingly not destructive. When alone, he sits in one corner eating his snacks in peace. When playing with others, well he plays around like a normal child
It's scary how much he both understands and does not understand about life (especially adult life) it's almost scary
Fukuzawa taught him go, not thinking much about it. Ranponot only destroyed his ass but also his pride (in one go pun not intended). After an entire day of trying to beat him, Fukuzawa never brought it up again. Peace was never an option
Yosano Akiko
Wakes him up by pinching his nose so he can't breathe
Yeah she's scary like that. A lot of boys her age are intimidated by her (because she can be such a brute) but otherwise she's pretty sweet
She likes cutting up things (paper things) with Kyouka. Paper flowers and other similar projects are her favorite
Favorite sweets are traditional Japanese treats. The three of them (Fukuzawa + Kyouka) eat those together pretty often
Opposite of Ranpo when it comes to cleanliness. Tidies up very often but can get destructive every now and then (especially when she's chasing someone)
When she's outside, she likes staying in the garden where the flowers are and observe any butterflies flying about. I think she even has a small book on butterflies just because of how much she likes them
Kunikida Doppo
At first, he tries to wake up Fukuzawa normally. "Wake up you should be awake now!!" If that doesn't work, he'll repeatedly smack his face until he gets up
Yeah no he's not a law-abiding obedient child. 100% rebel kid from the day he was born, and only listens to certain grownups like Fukuzawa
Similar to Yosano on the tidiness aspect. Neat freak but can get surprisingly destructive when with a certain other someone
It's cute tho how he tries to be more mindful of his surroundings since Fukuzawa scolds him so much (and he tries to tell the others to keep it down every now and then). But again a certain other someone just manages to tempt him so easily
Spends most of his time in physical games with other active kids because he has so much energy. When he gets tired he likes to scribble on paper and practice writing (since Fukuzawa has neat handwriting, he tries to copy it)
Actually he tries to copy Fukuzawa in a lot of things. You'll see him stick to him quite often
Dazai Osamu
Oh dear it's always a surprise with this one
Usually he doesn't wake Fukuzawa up and makes someone else do it, but when he does it's always some prank or another *cue tiny evil laugh*
Spends most of his time reading and annoying Kunikida. Physical/outdoor activities aren't his thing since he gets injured/tired quite easily
Doesn't clean and had wrecked the place more than enough times.
Ropes Atsushi into the stupidest and most dangerous things you could imagine a child doing. The number of small fires and broken things that Fukuzawa had to clean is staggering
When adults come over though, he's surprisingly well-behaved. But to be more specific it's more like he's intently observing them and analyzing their movements like a not-child would do
His favorite time is bath(tub) time and he sticks there longer than anyone should. He can throw a tantrum if taken out too early
Tanizaki Jun'ichirou
"Wakes" him up by gently pushing his shoulder. If it doesn't work, he gives up and leaves
Because of this he gets into a lot of dangerous (self-inflicted) scenarios. Trying to reach food in a high place, answering the door when he doesn't know who's on the other side, trying to reach a ball that got stuck on a tree
Really he should just wake Fukuzawa up/call an adult when he needs help. He may be shy yet independent, but it's still worrying how much he does on his own
Speaking of being on his own-
He does play with the other kids but most of the time no one knows where he is (unless he's with Naomi)
When he's with others, he's usually Yosano and Naomi's slave lol
His way of bonding with Fukuzawa is by finding and petting (and almost adopting) stray cats
Miyazawa Kenji
Wakes Fukuzawa up by a not-so-gentle squeeze on the arm
The most carefree of the bunch. He happily does whatever he wants and rarely gets into trouble
Except when it comes to lifting things. Fukuzawa nearly had a heart attack the first time he tried to reach a toy under the cabinet and tried (and almost successfully) lifted the thing with his two little hands
Ranpo eats the most frequently (and the most unhealthily) but Kenji eats the most number of bowls per meal. Beef gyudon is his favorite but any other rice bowl is going to get devoured just as much
He and Tanizaki are the most likely to sing/dance to music. It's cute how they just vibe with each other
The reason why he's so peaceful tho is that no one can beat him in a fight. And I mean no one. He may be one of the smallest/youngest but he has proven himself once and that was enough to scar everyone's minds (except the adults. They have no idea what actually happened)
Goes to the garden frequently with Yosano, but not because he likes the flowers. He likes the soil. It's weird but very cute
Nakajima Atsushi
Wakes Fukuzawa up very similar to Tanizaki. Only difference is that he lasts longer
Never gets into trouble because of that, though. He waits patiently for him to wake up and reach for food he's been craving, holds in his pee for as long as he could (even thought it's a bad idea), etc.
The only reason why he has so many "battle scars" is because someone keeps tricking him into doing dangerous things. Otherwise, it would've been safe to leave him with the other kids unsupervised
Has this toy plushie white tiger that he hasn't parted with since the day he arrived here. One time Fukuzawa tried to take it from him since it was dirty, but Atsushi cried so much it felt like Fukuzawa was committing a war crime
Eats rice bowls (especially chazuke) just as much as Kenji does
Most of the time he's sitting in front of the TV. He plays with other kids too but once his eyes are glued to the screen there's no going back
Izumi Kyouka
Wakes him up by poking some metallic object at his face
Spends a lot of her time inside, drawing and doing crafts with Yosano
The rest of the kids are noisy as heck which is why Fukuzawa was wondering if Kyouka is just really shy or uncomfortable. Turns out she's just really quiet and stoic (so much so she passes of as Fukuzawa's granddaughter)
It's not obvious but she eats just as much sweets as Ranpo does. It's quite alarming, actually
Hides in cabinets and/or clings to someone during a thunderstorm
Plays with Atsushi the most and follows him around. Will not tolerate anyone saying/doing anything bad to him
Like Atsushi has a toy stuffed rabbit she refuses to part with. It was one of the first things Fukuzawa gave her as well so maybe that's why
She's the most active at night. No one knows why but she just can't sleep easily at night (naps during the day are no problem) so Fukuzawa always puts her to bed last

Hey I love you’re BSD AU a lot and wanted to know, is Atsushi an honorary member of the Nakahara-Dazai family? Is Dazai still his mentor, is Chuuya also his mentor? What is Atsushi’s relationship with the fam
The best way to describe his relationship is "Future son-in-law"

Please don’t come for me
Sons thing that always bugs me is how people shame AtsushixKyouka shippers. I don’t ship them or anything, it’s just that I think it may be going a bit overboard. I get that Atsushi is 18 and Kyouks is 14, but there’s a reason that even the canon sort of hints and some sort of romance between the two. In case you forgot, bsd is in Japan made by Japanese people(I think). There, you’re not an adult until 20, which is honestly pretty reasonable. In their eyes, in the eyes of Japanese law, both of them are just kids.

Putting thoughts on TGWDLM AU here. Hidden under the cut for lots of text, TGWDLM spoilers, mentions of possession, and character death. it’s not nearly as dark as I make it sound though
It’d be Atsutodo centric, w Atsushi as Paul and Totty as Emma. They’re like the only characters that wouldn’t need a huge rewrite, maybe just make Atsushi a little more charming than Paul. I’d also make their relationship more established, they don’t have to already be a couple but definitely more friendly and crushing a lot more obviously.
Osototo could be Sam and Charlotte but not without a HUGE overhaul of their characters. Charlotte is too much of a coward to be a good fit for Totoko and I would just eliminate the fact that Sam/Osomatsu is a cop. Osomatsu is actually kinda tough because I don’t really like him in any other role so he’d end up being the one who’s most like their canon self. Like he’d just be A Guy that Totoko is dating and shows up later to try and kill her. The main draw of Osototo in these roles is the absolute powercouple-ness that comes after they both get possessed, as brief as it is before they die for real.
Nyaa-chan could be Ted but again with a big change of the role. Mostly I just think it’d be funny of Totoko was cheating on Osomatsu w her. She’d be a lot less of a sleazeball and more just concerned/crushing on Totoko.
Ichimatsu as Alice started as a joke but then I thought about it for more than two seconds and OUCHIES! A secret longing to be loved and wanted by his family only to grow resentful when he feels like he’s being sidelined and ignored? And he doesn’t even get to have that before he gets possessed? Fucking ow! Debating if I’d still want him to be a teenager or an adult, but I would put Choromatsu in Bill’s place regardless and just change their relationship so they’re bothers instead of father/son. Theyd be the only two of the Matsus who are actually related in this AU.
Choromatsu as Bill probably wouldn’t need too much reworking? Just again they’re brothers and instead of an ex-wife he’s fighting with over Ichimatsu he’s just trying to get custody of him after their parents passed? Assuming I go the teen Ichimatsu route. But oooooohhh my god the ANGST the HURT of him blaming himself for Ichimatsu’s death. Being unable to shoot Ichimatsu himself and getting killed for it. Iro angst is OUT Nenchuu angst is IN.
Yes Yanagida is here. Yes he’s Deb. Choromatsu likes him a little more than Bill did Deb in the OG muscial.
And that leaves Karamatsu. The catalyst for this AU that now haunts me. Show Stopping Number is the most Karamatsu bullshit I’ve ever seen and there’s no fruitcake that could fit the role of Professor Hidgens like he would. Specifically thinking Lawyer Karamatsu for this to get that Hidgens level of bonkers. I forget if they ever established what Hidgens teaches but I guess for this AU I’d just make it … ethics or something I don’t actually know what law professors teach. But it’d need to be something most students take so Totty has a reason to be there and know him.
Jyushimatsu.....I just don’t have a good spot for him. All that’s really left are background characters or to maybe rewrite it so he and Ichimatsu are twins but I don’t know. I cant figure out a good way to shoehorn him in.
I’m talking as if I’m going to do anything with this AU but I don’t honestly know. A musical About musicals is probably the worst media to try and convert to any sort of fic or whatnot. But I don’t have the time or energy to make it a full comic, I have no ability to make this a real musical, so fic is the only feasible option.
I might just be a hater but I personally am not a fan of reading lyrics, if I see it in fics I usually just skip over it because it just ever has the same affect as hearing it for me. But maybe I'm wrong and people don’t mind it? The other option is to eliminate the fact that the aliens make people sing and just have it be regular possession etc, but then I feel it just becomes another zombie au and you miss out on a lot of great moments that come with the songs.
There’s a chance I might still write a fic for this once I figure out how to approach it. because who doesn’t like reading stories where everyone is dead at the end?

If A Moment Is All We Are 14/?
AO3 link: HERE
“Kyou-chan...”
Kirako’s eyebrows knitted together in concern.
“Kyou-chan!”
I shifted uncomfortably in my chair as the sound of Kirako’s voice roused me from my half-sleep. My neck creaked audibly as I rotated my head just enough to look her in the eye and she took a hasty step back the moment my face came into view.
“A-Are you okay, Kyou-chan?”
I didn’t answer. Even after downing my third packet of instant coffee mix, I was still too tired to talk. Following the incident with Kunikida’s notebook yesterday, I’d spent a good chunk of the afternoon sitting at my kitchen table and staring at my phone. The image of “page fifty-three” remained there on full display until my battery was almost drained and I was forced to get up and prepare dinner.
I’d expected the list to be pretty extensive, but nothing of this magnitude. In total, there were no less than fifty-eight traits Kunikida found attractive enough to deem “ideal” in a partner match, including height preference (a methodically calculated range was given), personality traits, even blood type. My head was spinning by the time I’d finished skimming the page.
There was no way I, or any other human woman for that matter, would be able to match every single one of these requirements. It was simply too much.
I’d decided to go back to binge-reading manga over a cup of hot ramen to de-stress and had just about put aside the matter of what to do about “page fifty-three” when my phone pinged again.
Once again, I’d received an unwanted text message from Dazai. And once again, it was an image attachment. I had just made the decision to delete it without looking at it when my phone pinged several more times, causing me to open one of the attachments by mistake. If “page fifty-three” wasn’t already bad enough, I was soon made aware of the existences of “pages fifty-four through fifty-seven,” which contained a comprehensive plan (complete with locations!) for first dates, getting engaged, an actual timeline of the relationship before marriage... there was even a list of strategies for how to deal with in-laws and a small selection of potential baby names. By the time I got through it all, I wasn’t sure if I was intimidated or actually impressed.
What should I do?
To use the information I’d been given felt completely wrong— reading through Kunikida’s notebook alone was an invasion of privacy. However, not taking advantage of this when I was developing a crush on the man felt patently stupid. Either way, my chances of getting a good night’s sleep were completely ruined and once again I had only Dazai to blame.
Dazai...
“So, does that mean I still have a chance?” he’d asked.
I frowned as I thought back to that last thumbs-up he’d thrown out.
Why was Dazai doing this? Was he actually trying to “help” me as he put it, so that I could have a shot at getting Kunikida to like me? Because he cared about me?
But that didn’t make any sense. He wasn’t that kind of person... If he really wanted a chance with me, he would sabotage me instead. That’s who Dazai Osamu really was, that perverted son of a bitch...
I could tell by the way Kirako was looking at me that I had massive bags under my eyes but I was too exhausted to care. So, I let my cheek stay squished against the table and didn’t bother to lift up my head even though I knew that I was definitely scaring her.
“Kirako-san...”
I smiled and Kirako visibly twitched.
“Don’t worry about me. I’m fine. How can I help you?”
“Uh... well, I know you just finished a big case recently, but...”
She gingerly laid a thin folder on my desk.
“We need you to go with Ranpo-san on a case.”
I looked at it.
“Already?”
Kirako nodded and I watched as she carefully slid my own sketchbook towards me, a thick graphite pencil rolling slightly on top of the faux-leather cover.
“Could you please come with me?”
Slowly, and with a considerable amount of effort, I picked myself up and followed her to the desk in the far corner, my bones cracking loudly as I moved. We stopped at the table closest to the window, where I’d once spied an ID badge depicting a skinny man with spiky black hair wearing a brown tweed cap low over his eyes, a man who I could only describe as a Sherlock Holmes cosplay enthusiast.
Today, however, the seat was occupied by an enormous mound of empty cardboard snack boxes, the mess of brightly colored packaging looking like the aftermath of my old self going through a months’ worth of snacks. Kirako leaned in and gave the pile a soft poke.
“Ranpo-san? Excuse me, Ranpo-san?”
There was a muffled groan and at once the entire pile shifted. I stumbled back as the empty packages cascaded to the ground in a sweet-smelling waterfall and gawked beside a disturbingly calm Kirako as the dark-haired cosplayer was revealed. As I watched him lift his head from his desk, I got the disturbing feeling that this scene was a familiar one at the Armed Detective Agency. The man straightened up in his seat and stretched his limbs, yawning widely as he did so. One bright green eye slowly opened up and focused on me.
“Hm?”
The green-eyed man squinted at me and reached into his pocket for a pair of thick black spectacles.
“Who are you?”
“Ranpo-san,” Kirako explained gently, “This is Kusunoki Kyou. She’s the new recruit who just passed her Entrance Exam. She’ll be going with you on your newest assignment.”
He looked from me to Kirako and put his head down on his desk.
“I don’t feel like it. I just got back from Hokkaido, Haruno-san. Cut me a break, will you?”
Kirako turned to me with a soft smile.
“This is Edogawa Ranpo. As you can tell, he can be in very high demand, even outside of Yokohama. Ranpo-san is the best detective we have and the main reason we can even call ourselves a detective agency. Even the police frequently come to him for help, like today, for example.”
She waved the folder in the air.
“The police can wait,” Edogawa whined. “I’m tired.”
“Ranpo-san,” Kirako whispered, her voice taking on an urgent, conspiratorial tone. “Kyou-chan here loves sweets as much as you do. In fact, she’s good friends with a local convenience store manager. As a thank you for helping them out, Kyou-chan gets a free box of Kit-Kats whenever a new flavor is released—”
Edogawa perked up in an instant.
“Welcome, new recruit!” he shouted, suddenly bounding out of his chair and all but exploding out of the pile of trash. “You are standing in the presence of the Great Detective, Edogawa Ranpo! There is no case that I can’t solve and no truth that escapes the scrutiny of my eyes! Let’s take a look at you, shall we?”
With a flick of his wrist, he placed his glasses on.
“Special Ability: Ultra Deduction!”
“Ability?!” I exclaimed, taking a step back. “Wait, what are you doing?!”
“Too late!” Edogawa declared, “It’s already working!”
I froze, clutching my notebook to my chest as he slowly looked me up and down through those thick square frames, analyzing every square inch of my being and making me feel like I was being fed through a scanner. It didn’t feel quite as gross as when Dazai had been staring at my butt yesterday but it was still uncomfortable.
“Hmm... Interesting...”
Edogawa took the glasses off.
“You’re an Ability User, aren’t you?”
My jaw dropped.
“What the—?! How did you—??”
Completely ignoring me, he turned to Kirako with a pout.
“I don’t need any cheat codes, Haruno-san. I can solve this case on my own.”
I stared at him.
Cheat codes?
“We know that, Ranpo-san,” Kirako reassured him. “But the fact of it is, Atsushi-kun can’t take you today. He’s still out with Dazai-san (Which god do I pray to so that I don’t have to think about that man one more time today, I thought to myself) and there’s no one else who can take you to the site...”
“Oh, good point.”
Edogawa put his glasses away.
“Very well. Nice to meet you, Kusunoki-kun. Shall we go?”
He was already halfway to the door by the time I found my voice again.
“Eh? Right now??”
“Well, of course, there’s a case to be solved and Kit-Kats to be collected,” Edogawa replied, his hand on the doorknob. “As for your questions, I’ll explain on the way there. Now are you coming or not?”
Kirako gave me an encouraging look and inclined her head towards the door, where Edogawa was staring at me expectantly, or at least appeared to be (I wasn’t entirely sure if his eyes were open or not). When I looked back at my desk, I realized that the seats next to mine were empty—neither Dazai and Kunikida had come in this morning and both were out on jobs. If I left now, there was a good chance I wouldn’t be back for the rest of the day and then I wouldn’t have to have any of the awkward conversations that were sure to follow after yesterday’s fiasco...
I looked back at Kirako and took the file from her.
“Let me go get my stuff.”
***
Kirako had mentioned that Edogawa was really bad with directions. What she should have said was that “The Great Detective” was completely unable to function in normal society once he got outside.
How was it that a grown man (and a Yokohama native no less!) had literally no idea how to use the public transit system? I’d laughed when Edogawa had acted like he didn’t understand how the turnstiles worked, thinking it was all some kind of joke. Unfortunately, I realized the joke was on me the instant the ticket agent rushed out and began desperately trying to free Edogawa from the metal arms, where the man’s poncho had inexplicably gotten stuck. If that wasn’t bad enough, he couldn’t figure out which line to stand in on the escalator, nearly discarded his ticket with the candy wrapper in his pocket and would have walked right onto the departures track if I hadn’t noticed and quickly grabbed him by the arm before disaster struck.
All in all though, it was still better than staying at the Agency and waiting for Dazai to show up with his knowing grin. Or worse, having to look Kunikida in the face after he’d seen me all tangled up with Dazai yesterday...
I let my head roll back in my seat and sighed.
As Edogawa and I swayed back and forth in our shiny plastic chairs, on the train at long last, I tried to push all thoughts of Dazai, Kunikida and the notebook away and instead focused my attention on my sleepy seat-mate. How had Edogawa figured out I was an Ability User with just one glance? Was he just that good a detective, as Kirako said he was? Or maybe it really did have something to do with his glasses.
I stared suspiciously at Edogawa as he napped beside me, his arms crossed behind his head and one corner of his thick black spectacles poking out of his vest. To my annoyance, Edogawa had refused to put them on unless he was deducing something (“Are you kidding me? The glasses are special, Kusunoki-kun, I can’t just put them on whenever!”), leading me to think his navigational problems might be due in part to severe astigmatism. That and a stubborn refusal to read and follow directions.
Noticing my eyes on him at last, Edogawa shifted slightly in his seat and addressed me.
“Something on your mind, Kusunoki-kun?”
“Not really...”
“Hmm? I wonder...”
He took a small, green lollipop out of his pocket, unwrapped it and stuck it in his mouth.
“You’re not thinking about how I was able to deduce you were an Ability User?”
I stiffened, then sighed. Apparently Dazai wasn’t the only one I’d have a hard time fooling.
“Okay, I was,” I admitted, mentally kicking myself for thinking about Dazai again, “But is it really a good idea to talk about it here?”
I gestured around the train car.
“I thought President Fukuzawa asked us not to talk about my Ability in public? What if the Port Mafia’s still looking for me and they overhear...?”
“I wouldn’t worry too much about that,” Edogawa said, shifting the lollipop from one side of his mouth to the other. His teeth clicked against the candy as he spoke. “For one, this car’s completely empty and I seriously doubt it’s bugged. No reason to, you know? For another, the Port Mafia’s probably not looking for you right now. If they were...”
He bit down on his lollipop and a resounding crack echoed throughout the car.
“You’d be sitting in a torture chamber somewhere instead of here with me right now.”
I shifted uncomfortably in my seat.
“G-good point.”
“So you can relax,” he said, crunching loudly on the rest of his candy, seemingly oblivious to how relaxed I wasn’t now that he’d brought up the Port Mafia. “In any case, I do want to find out more about your Ability before we get to where we’re going so why don’t we talk about it?”
I nodded. But when I opened my mouth to speak, Edogawa raised his hand to stop me.
“Oh, sorry. I meant why don’t I tell you everything I know first and then you can fill in the rest?”
He grinned.
“Wouldn’t want the new recruit thinking Ultra Deduction is some mere parlor trick, now would we? Think of this as the first of many lessons, Kusunoki-kun! The Great Detective, Edogawa Ranpo will be your teacher today!”
As he whipped the glasses back out of his coat and stuck them on his face, I couldn’t help but wonder if he knew that this was technically my second big case at the Agency, making this the second of “many lessons.” As it stood, the person who had first taught me something important while we were on a job together was Kunikida...
Tucking the tips of my fingers below my ribbon, I touched my hand to my chest, where that familiar warmth began creeping back in as I pictured the bespectacled detective. I felt an odd sense of comfort when I thought about him, about his rigid, yet highly dependable nature. He was consistent, respectable, stable, a pillar of strength both literal and metaphorical that anyone in the Agency could rely on and yet somehow patient and kind when he needed to be.
And it didn’t exactly hurt that he was tall, blonde and gorgeous...
I was too tired to notice if he had come in or not this morning, probably forgot to say hello if he had, but if he was gone by the time I’d noticed his absences then he had to be out on an early morning case. Not surprising, given that he was a senior member and so reliable. But I did hope he was able to get enough rest last night and hadn’t lost any sleep over that fiasco with his notebook like I had...
“Kusunoki-kuuun...”
Edogawa snapped his fingers at me and I jolted up in my seat.
“Are you even paying attention?” he grumbled, “I was about to reveal exactly how I figured out you were an Ability User.”
“I’m paying attention!” I exclaimed, flushing in embarrassment as Edogawa stared doubtfully at me.
“Good,” he huffed, “Because the big reveal just isn’t as dramatic the second time you do it. Now then, let me tell you a little about my Ability first.”
He tapped on the corner of his glasses and continued.
“When I put these on, my Ultra Deduction activates, letting me see the truth behind any and all mysteries. It only took a second to figure out your status as an Ability User and a fledgling detective and here’s why. Let’s start with the most obvious.”
I nodded and scooted closer to listen. I was still pretty convinced Edogawa needed those glasses to see more than anything else but now I knew better than to interrupt him when he was clearly excited to show off.
“It’s pretty clear you aren’t one of the office clerks,” he said, gesturing to my clothes. “Because you aren’t dressed like one. You might be around the same age as Haruno-san and the others, but if you’re not wearing that gray skirt and vest, then you’re someone who’s meant to leave the office on official jobs.”
“Right...”
“On that note, Haruno-san wanted you to show me around. That’s something that only trainee detectives like Atsushi-kun are asked to do. And trainee detectives can only get in by taking the Entrance Exam. And the Entrance Exam...”
“Is only given to Ability Users who want to join the Agency,” I slowly pieced together, my eyes widening as the dots connected at last.
Edogawa grinned.
“Very good! As for how your Ability activates...”
He pointed at me.
“It has to be through touch. You have a tendency to hide your hands. When you can’t do that, you hold yourself at a physical distance from others, meaning you’re afraid to get too close to them, even someone like Haruno-san, who you seem to know well (she calls you Kyou-chan after all). We don’t live in a country where it’s common to greet others through things like handshakes or physical touch but you seem to take it much further than that. You’re definitely not a germaphobe judging by the condition of your workstation (I cringed) so I can only conclude that you avoid touching people to prevent activation of your Ability. Now, let’s talk about what your Ability actually is...”
Edogawa paused for dramatic effect and I leaned forward, not wanting to miss a single word. Despite gaining control over my Ability just over a week ago, I still didn’t completely understand the full limits of what I could do, even though I had just used my powers to solve my first case. If Edogawa had been right about everything so far, perhaps he could unlock the truth behind my visions...!
As I waited patiently for him to keep going, Edogawa blinked at me. Finally, he took off his glasses and said, “Uh, actually, Kusunoki-kun, this is the part where you tell me what your Ability does.”
I must’ve looked every bit as disappointed as I felt because Edogawa suddenly scowled and crossed his arms.
“Hey, hey! I’m a detective, not a wizard! I said I needed you to fill in the rest didn’t I? Before you start doubting my Ability, I’m going to deduce one last thing for you.”
Once again, he jabbed his finger at me, his bright green eyes narrowed to slits and his mouth stretched wide in a confident grin.
“Whatever your Ability is, it’s something you wish you didn’t have. You’ve seen things, haven’t you, Kusunoki-kun? You don’t have that air of innocence about you like certain other members of our civilian staff. If I’m going to be honest, I’d say the look in your eyes reminds me a little of Dazai-san when he first started here...”
I stiffened as Edogawa put his hand down, my eyes glued to the black frames once again sticking out of his pocket.
No. Impossible...
The image of the ghoul reappeared in my mind’s eye and I gripped my hands tightly to stop them from shaking. Had Edogawa somehow seen the hollow look in my eyes when he’d put those glasses on?
Just then, we passed into a tunnel.
One by one, the lights embedded into the ceiling above us flickered to life, casting the entire train in a vaguely chartreuse sheen as we passed through the darkness. There was a sickly green hue to Edogawa’s skin and as I looked away from him, I found myself slowly turning to the windows, with the sound of the train roaring loudly in my ears...
...where I saw a pale, fearful-looking young woman, with short dark hair and large burgundy eyes. There were no bloody tears and no bottomless pupils staring back at me from the darkened glass.
Just the ordinary reflection of a normal girl.
Suppressing a shudder, I turned away from the window and slumped back against the plastic seats.
“Edogawa-san...?”
He perked up.
“You’ve been right about everything else so far but you’re wrong about one thing.”
I felt my features twist into a disapproving scowl.
“I’m not like Dazai.”
I fell silent as Edogawa studied me, his gaze lingering forebodingly on my eyes.
“If you say so, Kusunoki-kun,” he said slowly. “If you say so...”
He fished another lollipop out of his pocket, a cherry-red one, and offered it to me.
“Here. Some brain fuel for the case. I believe Haruno-san said you liked sweets too.”
As I took the piece of candy from him, Edogawa smiled.
“And please, call me Ranpo. Everyone does. Tell me more about your Ability.”
***
“Woah...”
Edogawa turned and shot me a curious look as I paused at the street corner, gawking at our destination up ahead.
“First time seeing a burned building, Kusunoki-kun?”
I shook my head no and kept moving, jogging a little to catch up with Edogawa as he continued on towards the site. I’d seen burned structures before, just not anything quite like this.
Just ahead of us on the next street over were the charred, blackened remains of what used to be a small two-story home. The entire thing had been reduced to nothing more than ash and badly burned support beams and from a distance, it looked less like a real house and more like a charcoal outline someone had scrawled over the street. As we approached, I spotted several distinct bands of vivid yellow police tape stretched across the base of the building. There were a few officers scattered throughout the site, probably stationed there to keep civilians away and as we got closer, one of them, a tall, graying man in a blue blazer, looked up from his clipboard and waved to Edogawa.
“Edogawa-san! You’re here early.”
“Early?” I exclaimed, quickly turning from him to Edogawa in shock.
After we’d left the train station, “The Great Detective” had wandered off yet again and this time, he’d managed to actually get on a bus... going back in the direction we’d just come from! I’d spent so much time chasing him down and trying to get him to this badly burned house that I would’ve considered it a miracle if we’d made it before noon today. As Edogawa and the man in the blazer chatted away, I couldn’t help wondering what Kunikida would have to say about this once he’d read my report.
So much for thinking I could impress him by being punctual...
As I glanced down at my phone, wincing slightly when I saw the time, it suddenly rang in my hand.
I jumped, almost dropping the thing in my rush to press the answer button. I knew I was being paranoid but I couldn’t shake the feeling that Kunikida had somehow figured out I’d messed up already and had suddenly decided to call and check in on me.
“H-hello?” I ventured, praying I would magically think of the perfect excuse and escape the inevitable lecture that was sure to come.
“Kusunoki-kun! You actually picked up!” a very familiar voice chirped, sounding pleasantly surprised.
My relief at the call not being from Kunikida vanished as quickly as it appeared.
“Dazai-san...”
I sighed and put my hand over my face.
“What’s going on? Why are you calling me while I’m in the middle of a case?”
“Oh, so that’s where you went.”
Dazai’s voice was fuzzy with static.
“I just wanted to see if you got the rest of my texts last night.”
I grew quiet, trying to figure out if it would be better to lie to him or just hang up when Dazai suddenly snorted and said, “I’m kidding. I know you got them. You’re trying to think of some way to trick me, aren’t you?”
“I am not!” I shouted into the receiver, flushing scarlet when Dazai started laughing.
“There’s no need to sound so embarrassed! I think it’s cute that you’re trying so hard. But anyway, Kusunoki-kun, I need to tell you something—”
“Kusunoki-kuuuun!”
Edogawa was calling out to me from the front of the house, where he was standing next to the graying detective, waving his arm in the air.
“Come here! I need to introduce you to the person leading the case!”
“I’ll be right there!” I shouted back.
Turned back to the receiver, glaring at it as if I were glaring at Dazai himself, I all but crushed the phone in my hand as I spat out my response.
“Not now!”
I snapped my phone shut and shoved it back into my bag.
“This is Hatta Shotarou,” Edogawa said, gesturing to the man in the blazer as I hurried to join them. “He’s the one who requested my help today.”
“Nice to meet you.”
I bowed.
“I’m Kusunoki Kyou. I’ll be assisting Edogawa—I mean, Ranpo-san today.”
“Pleased to meet you, Kusunoki-kun.” Detective Hatta smiled. “I’d like to commend you for getting Edogawa-san here so quickly. We weren’t expecting you for at least another thirty minutes.”
My smile suddenly felt stiff.
“You what?”
“We’ve gotten so used to Edogawa-san getting lost and coming late that we’ve gotten into the habit of giving the Agency an extra hour to bring him to the appointed location,” Hatta elaborated as my smile went from being stiff to twitchy. “You’re doing pretty well for your first time assisting him. Now then, please come with me. We should get you both down to the basement before the press shows up.”
“The basement?” I repeated, surprised. “There’s a basement?”
Hatta nodded.
“Maybe I should be calling it a storage cellar instead. I know it’s rather unusual to have one, especially in a place like Yokohama, but the Ito’s had a small side business. They make their own pickles—been doing so for the past twenty years, from what we’ve found—and when their business grew, they had a cellar installed underneath the house.”
He took us around the side of the house and to the back, where I saw what looked like two blackened squares embedded into the scorched ground, next to a pile of burned trash. It was a pair of wooden doors, both badly burned, but not so much that I couldn’t make out the sets of handprints amidst the ash and soot. Two thin diagonal lines of police tape stretched from the corners in a giant “X,” and on the ground in front of the two doors was a broken lock and chain.
“Did someone break in?” I asked, pointing to the lock.
Hatta shook his head.
“We did that when we checked the basement and I’m glad we did.”
His mouth set into a firm line.
“We found a body down there.”
I froze.
“What?”
“A body inside a cellar that was locked from the outside?” Edogawa grinned. “Classic.”
“Who are they? How did they get in? What were they even doing there?” I sputtered as Edogawa’s hand descended upon my shoulder.
“That’s why we’re here,” he said, smirking. “Or rather...”
He flicked out his glasses.
“That’s why I’m here. Open the doors, Hatta-san.”
As if summoned by his words, a sudden gust of wind rushed through the site. Edogawa’s brown cape and pastel tie flapped madly in the wind and I pushed my hands over my skirt to keep it from flipping up.
“Special Ability: Ultra Deduction.”
He slowly settled the glasses on his nose and at once, his emerald-green eyes sharpened, rapidly flicking about the scene as he took in every piece of information he could find. When he turned to me, his smile was nothing short of victorious.
“Come on, Kusunoki-kun. The game is afoot.”
