HelPol 141 Headcanons
hello, hellenic polytheist here, projecting onto characters i like because i can. rbs are appreciated!!! im open to suggestions for other characters (no promises i will 100% do them, it depends on my motivation), and if you're going to be an anti-paganism asshole just fuck right off.
-----------------------------------------------------------
notes:
realistically there's little difference, but for this; deities under DEVOTED TO are deities they consistently worship and actively consider themselves devotees of, and deities under ALSO HONORS are ones they offer and pray to but not as frequently.
the boldened text in every list of domains is what each character focuses on in their worship.
FEELINGS ABOUT RELIGION and RELIGIOUS JOURNEY are lumped together because for most of them they're heavily intertwined, and also the sections would be too small if i were to separate them
-----------------------------------------------------------
JOHN 'SOAP' MACTAVISH
DEVOTED TO:
Hephaistos / Hephaestus : forges, fire, metalworking, technology, sculpture, craftsmanship, physical creation, art
Ares : war/battle, dance, violence, fear, rebellion bloodlust, courage, civil order, masculinity
ALSO HONORS:
Dionysos / Dionysus : alcohol, madness, cycles, rebirth, parties, agriculture, feasts, theater, fertility, release, inspiration
Hermes : trade, wealth, luck, fertility, animal husbandry, sleep, language, thieves, and travel
PRACTICE STYLE:
probably on the modern end. rushed, simply due to his work. i'd imagine he left Catholicism in this AU due to the strict structures it had (+ probably some trauma, lets be honest), and therefore he would prefer the leniency of a more new-age practice. i also think Soap would like how much of a puzzle it can be. he'd like figuring out every what works for him, doing the math and finding out the best ways he can go about each thing. he'd be knowledgeable of historical practices, but in an "know the rules so you can break them properly" sort of way.
FEELINGS ABOUT RELIGION/RELIGIOUS JOURNEY:
in the beginning, he probably felt hesitant. a little overwhelmed , too. growing up in a majorly monotheistic religion, it took him a while to get comfortable with branching out in his worship. once he did, though, he was much more open and himself in his practice. he loves it. he loves finally praying and actually getting answers. he loves offering, loves divination, loves building kharis. he especially loves learning the other ways people practice; he finds it all fascinating (major projection lol).
KYLE 'GAZ' GARRICK
DEVOTED TO:
Aphrodite : love, sexuality, the people, war, self-confidence, relationships, beauty, passion
Ares : war/battle, dance, violence, fear, rebellion bloodlust, courage, civil order, masculinity
Hephaistos / Hephaestus : forges, fire, metalworking, technology, sculpture, craftsmanship, physical creation, art
ALSO HONORS:
Athene / Athena : wisdom, battle strategy, weaving, crafts
PRACTICE STYLE:
also modern, but probably more in the sense where he's adapting historical practices to fit a modern lifestyle. i think that he, while he still gives physical offerings, prefers and enjoys doing devotional acts that are connected to the gods in some way (i.e; physical training for Ares).
FEELINGS ABOUT RELIGION/RELIGIOUS JOURNEY:
i dont think he really felt guilty or hesitant about it; even though his parents were firmly Christian, i like to think that they were very accepting and allowed their kids to learn and explore different things. while they brought them to church and raised them with exposure to their faith, they didnt force him or his sister to follow their beliefs. i imagine that Gaz did follow those beliefs for a while, and that his switch would've been him just.. growing out of it, and feeling a stronger pull to polytheism overall.
maybe he felt that monotheism was limiting, maybe he desired fewer expectations about 'how he should be acting' than being a Good Christian Boy gave him. regardless, i think he's glad he made his decision. i also think he's a total lover the religion's mythology; when he isn't using his free time training and spending time with the team, he's spending hours researching and reading.
JOHN PRICE
DEVOTED TO:
Zeus : storms, the sky, fatherhood, law, justice, oaths, kingship, hospitality, prophecy, order
ALSO HONORS:
Any Diety : Price seems like he would offer and pray to whomever he wants/needs to in the moment
PRACTICE STYLE:
i unfortunately don't have much to say for Price. admittedly, characterizing him is difficult for me. i think he gives mostly fuck all about going about proper reconstructionism, though, and has his own much more casual way of doing things. does he respect the historical stuff? yeah. doesnt necessarily mean he wants to engage in those ways, though.
FEELINGS ABOUT RELIGION/RELIGIOUS JOURNEY:
converting was like reuniting with an old friend, for John. as a lad he'd heard of the myths, listened to the tales. he was always intrigued by it, but nothing more. he didn't have a religion for the longest time—didnt think he wanted one. he started simply because he was curious, and liked what he found. i like to think he leaves the rest of his cigars burning when he's done smoking as little offerings for Zeus.
SIMON 'GHOST' RILEY
DEVOTED TO:
Nemesis : divine retribution, revenge, justice, balance, indignation
ALSO HONORS:
Artemis : wilderness, the hunt, instinct, plague, healing/purity, archery, dance, music, chastity, transitions, care of children
Dionysos / Dionysus : alcohol, madness, cycles, rebirth, parties, agriculture, feasts, theater, fertility, release, inspiration
PRACTICE STYLE:
he respects historical tradition, and probably has a secret desire to be able to participate in those ways. though outside of that he definitely isnt picky in how he chooses to do things. he does what he's capable of in the moment, nothing more. huge believer of the phrase 'if it works, it works'.
FEELINGS ABOUT RELIGION/RELIGIOUS JOURNEY:
Ghost is probably hesitant with worship—faith is something that evaded him after the horrors he went through. he found Nemesis after escaping Roba, and holds a lot of affection for Her especially (i dont think his desire for revenge on Roba was specifically influenced by Her, i definitely think that was of his own volition. though it did get Her attention, and he definitely had Her support). he does appreciate the gods, even if it's hard some days because of all he's been through and who he is.

Scaramouche
Thinking about him.
Not anything specific. He probably has ball joints.
Well Kabukimono and Kunikuzushi probably had ball joints. Once he completely joined the fatui, he probably had Dottore cover them with artificial skin.
When you touch it, you can still feel the ball joints underneath, and he feels a bit self-conscious about it.

So while rewatching Avatar: The Last Airbender recently, I noticed a trend
A number of spirits we see have an animal form, specifically animals we recognize as "normal" for us. For example:
- Wan Shi Tong is an owl and his knowledge seekers are foxes
- Tui and La are koi fish
- Hei Bai is a panda
-The guardian of the mother of faces is a wolf (The Search)
Heck there's even the talking Baboon spirit and the monkey missing its face that we see in the Spirit World at the end of Season 1.
Basically every time we've seen a "normal" animal, they've been a spirit.
My point? I argue that Bosco is a spirit bear that's chilling and living the good life in the mortal world just because he can.

Seeing this picture made me think that if Uncle Iroh had a phone it would be filled with Zuko's silly pictures. Uncle would consider all of them cute and he would gladly show them to the gaang. Meanwhile, Zuko would die from embarrassment.

Headcanon: Yue, being a part of the Moon Spirit, has always been able to enhance other's waterbending - but so slightly that only little kids who just started to waterbend noticed it.

Tim Drake is blind. He's blind but no one knows. Why? Because he moves around so well they dont think twice. They know he can fight blindfolded, but they dont know it's because he already is blind.
He can still see, he can see light, but in full bat fashion he uses echo location. It becomes so second nature to him he has Constantine or whatever magic user check to see if he hasnt changed entirely into one and he cant see. He's still human, sort of, just a fast to adapt one.
When he gets ready he has someone, a hired personal assistant, that does his hair and what not. People, mainly his family and some of his friends, think he's just being rich and using his money, but he doesnt know what he looks like. So when he dresses for himself or to hang out, he's going based off feels and feels alone. So he has really horrible fashion taste so he hears.
While patrolling as robin, he has thermal sensors built in. The bright colors of the heat he can see so he can tell where people are and how many people.
When doing cases or work, he knows where the screen is thanks to the light, but he has an earbud in reading everything to him fast so it just looks like his reading even if he's just having it read to him in his ear. When handed a case he usually has his domino on which sends the words into his comm line.
He likes photography, so he found away to do it while being blind. His camera was custom made by his parents to make a sound, or vibrate if he chooses, when he gets a clear shot of something, then he'll snap away.
When he watched Avatar, or well listened, he found it so cool that Toph was blind and used her feet to feel the vibrations of the ground. He learned how to do that as well, although it's hard to feel vibrations in the ground. He still learned how though.
No one except for Tam, his secretary, and Ra's al Ghul, for some reason, know that he is blind.
He neither hides nor tells everyone else if he is blind or not. It's through bat training that he doesnt tell because you shouldn't show any weaknesses. It's also through bat training that he doesnt jump whenever someone sneaks up on him.
He also doesnt want anyone to know he's blind all at the same time for fear of Bruce benching him permanently so he wont be able to go out as a vigilante anymore.

New headcanon (that is highly specific and very rarely useful but I find highly entertaining anyway)…
Why Sokka immediately distrusts Aunt Wu:
Her Mark of the Wise was upside down so she was obviously not to be trusted.

here's a bunch of random Horangi (Call Of Duty) headcanons because i keep coming up with them and need a place to throw them lol
˖ ݁𖥔 ݁˖ 🐯 ˖ ݁𖥔 ݁˖
when he's incredibly focused, he sticks his tongue out a little. it's usually hidden by his mask, though, so most don't know he does it.
^ he almost constantly has a little wet spot on his mask from doing that. it's not obvious or anything, he's not drooling all over it, but it's there lmao (this is a shared headcanon, and my pal kade came up with it)
definitely a cat person
Horangi had a very solitary nature until he joined the army. he still kind of does, but by the time he joined KorTac he'd been conditioned to be around others and it doesn't bother him as much
smokes, but pretty casually. heavy smoking is an addiction he left behind with gambling.
he likes the snow!! (though over the years, he finds himself preferring to just look at it. the cold irritates his scars)
he likes thrillers, and cooking shows.
^ watches Nailed It! at like four in the morning to laugh at them (this is projection)
mostly lets out amused huffs/snorts instead of 'properly' laughing. (basically a human version of tiger chuffing!! chuffing has been described as sounding like car exhaust, snorts, and/or huffs, and it's vaguely akin to purring. in general, it's the sound of a very happy kitty, but it's also used for greetings and courtship. just a funfact :3)
^ on the topic of noises; grunting in response to things, those quiet grumbles that almost sound like growls when he's frustrated, etc.. gotta have tiger-like vocalizations for mr. tiger man
he can see exceptionally well in the dark, and he has an almost scarily good sense of smell.
sharp teeth, big yawns, and even bigger smiles.
his hair's almost always silky smooth (maybe just slighty coarse, at some points, but never too dry or brittle). not even he understands how he manages it.
Horangi has hypogeusia. it's a taste disorder that causes reduced taste and can make it hard to differentiate certain flavors. it isn't severe in his case, and it mostly affects his ability to taste sweetness.
^ he prefers foods that have much stronger tastes, because its easier to, well, taste them. while his disorder mainly hinders tasting sweet things, foods in general can taste a bit bland to him if they arent powerful enough.
smells 'warm'. citrus, cedar, spices, ginger, etc. (burberry brit for men is the cologne im thinking of for him). also always smells like cigarette smoke. definitely not overwhelmingly though; it's there, but mostly covered by the aforementioned scents.
he's actually pretty good at baking, which is ironic because most of the time he can barely taste what he's making.
massive spicy food enjoyer. feast mode ACTIVATED, he will tear that shit up. better pray you get some before him because there will be none left after he's done.
his favorite color is pink!
it's scary how quiet he can be. he's stealthy, a complete master of the hunt. you'll turn around and he'll Literally Just Be There like "hey man."
cannot find a pair of matching socks literally ever. the divorce rate between them is astonishing.
he reads/has read the classics, for sure. from historical texts, to renowned novels. i think he especially enjoys the iliad. also massive stephen king fan probably.
he'd take a strongly steeped cup of tea over coffee any day (though frequently he caves and drinks the latter for caffeine purposes)
︶꒦︶꒷︶︶꒷꒦︶︶︶꒷꒦︶︶꒦︶꒷︶︶꒷꒦︶︶꒷꒦︶︶︶
that's pretty much all i have rn, maybe i will add more in the future!! tysm for reading !! ♡ (˶˃ ᵕ ˂˶)

Concept: Veils are more widely worn in the ATLA universe for a variety of reasons
Zuko and Toph enjoy travelling together and their favourite disguise in the earth kingdom is: Strong earthbending noble escorting her shy, reclusive older brother.
People thought the Bei Fongs had one (1) daughter who was tiny, blind and fragile - until suddenly she was the avatar's earth bending master, so the public have accept that they know nothing about the Bei Fongs. Who's the say they DIDNT have another child that they carefully hid away? Especially considering THIS child is dressed in neutral browns and muted golds with a veil obscuring his face. And sometimes people catch a glimpse of gold eyes or scar tissue through the gauzy fabric. It makes sense that the Bei Fongs would hide away a child born of an affair with a firebender.
Toph loves playing the part of escort. She gets to boss him about, and drag him all around the best restaurants, and order an outrageous amount of food for him. It's nice having people default to speaking to HER as the authority figure, after spending so much time in the presence of the Avatar and the Fire Lord.
And Zuko gets to be anonymous. He's not the Fire Lord when he puts that veil on, he's a reclusive and fragile noble who no one looks to to make decisions. He gets to switch his brain off and let Toph drag him around and speak for him. It's freeing.
Also: please imagine the look on the Bei Fongs faces when they hear that everyone thinks they have a secret hidden firebending son who's galavanting around with their run away daughter. They'd be HORRIFIED. Toph knows this and RELISHES in it.

idk if this is considered an unpopular opinion but I hate when I see fics on Azula redemption or Zuko's reign and it's written in a way that makes it seem like the Fire Nation hates Azula. Azula was the pride of the Fire Nation and royalty, the Fire Nation wouldn't have hated her. If anything, they would've felt like it was some sort of injustice that Azula was removed from the throne. Y'all have to remember that Zuko was seen as a traitor of the Fire Nation. If anything, people would've hated HIM in the beginning and even towards the middle of his reign.
Deconstructing colonialism takes a long time. Truth be told is would take DECADES for the Fire Nation to dislike Azula and even after decades, she probably would still be socially acknowledged for her prowess and dedication to the Fire Nation by many.
It would go something like this:
"Yeah, Azula capturing Ba Sing Se was bad, but you can't lie, she did in 3 days what General Iroh tried to do in 600. That's fucking amazing."
That's how people talk about some conquerors now, why wouldn't they talk about them like that in ATLA?
FYI: I deleted the last paragraph of this bc I didn't like what i wrote. I stand on everything else tho.😭

Okay. Okay. I’m rewatching ATLA and I just hit The Runaway and… new headcanon.
After the war, Toph pulls Aang, Suki, and Zuko aside and explains the whole “Sokka can’t remember what their mom looks like” thing and says she wants to do something about it, for both Sokka and Katara. So they put together a plan. They get Hakoda, Gran Gran, and any other Water Tribe members old enough to remember Kya to give them as detailed a description of her as possible, then with Zuko’s financial help they hire a top-notch portrait maker to put it all together.
Sokka and Katara aren’t suspicious when Zuko approaches them about having them sit for a portrait together - they helped save the world, they have quite a bit of fame and political attention now, makes sense to kind of capture them how they looked when they first defeated the Fire Lord for posterity. But with both of them sitting for the portrait for reference, and with the information from the Water Tribe describing her to work from, the artist is able to put together a damn good recreation of Kya. And when Sokka and Katara finally get to see the finished product r and realize what the artist was really working on, and what their friends did for them… Katara of course bursts into tears, both sad and happy, grief for her mother and joy to see her face so clearly again after so long, and full of love for the friends who went to so much effort to give her this.
But all Sokka can do is stare at the portrait. For so long, his image of his mother has grown murkier and less distinct in his mind. For so long, when he’s tried to picture his mom, all he could see was Katara, because it was Katara who stepped up and took on that role, Katara who made sure everyone stayed together and kept them feeling like a family. But now, he looks at this portrait of his mother, smiling and warm and alive in a way that she hadn’t been in his mind in so long, and instead of Katara in her face, he sees himself.

Rewatching ATLA for the 'shut-up'th time and thinking how wild it would have been in 'The Serpent's Pass' if the Gaang embarked on the same ferry as Zuko, Iroh, Jet, Smellerbee and Longshot. I mean, imagine the mayhem and awkwardness...
The last time the Gaang saw Zuko and Iroh, was when Iroh got hurt by Azula, when they joined forces for one(!) fight and Zuko snapped at them afterwards.
The last time they saw Jet, he tried to kill a village of innocent people and they just barely managed to stop him, after he betrayed their trust.
Now both Zuko and Jet are talking about starting a new life in Ba Sing Se and second chances. Sokka isn't buying any of it.
What's even more annoying is, that Jet is trying to flirt with Zuko like he did with Katara - and that it works. Jet doesn't even know that Zuko is a firebender and if he did, he wouldn't be trying to convince/lure him to join the freedom fighters and compliment him on his posture, etc.
I have no idea where this would be going exactly, but I really think it would be hilarious.
