thank fuck for this change to making it more explicitly cinderpelt's choice to be a medcat while also pointing out it wouldn't be impossible for her to be a warrior. it always was her choice, mind you, but a proper conversation between the two is appreciated.
really hoping that the tnp graphic novel team doesn't fumble this by keeping in that stupid crush retcon.
#It doesn’t ruin it for me#I still enjoyed the book a lot#But I think representing disability in fiction has more nuance than the fandom portrays sometimes#A character being unable to do certain things because of their disability can be frustrating for some readers but validating for others#Because disabilities do that in real life#What matters is the character having agency#Which doesn’t mean having every option in the world available to them regardless of physical ability#It means being able to make their own choices#Rather than an abled person choosing for them#And having their own voice#To be clear - I am not physically disabled myself and cannot speak for that community#All I can speak for are my milder mental disabilities of ADHD and Autism#And they definitely negatively affect me and hold me back in certain ways that neurotypical people don’t experience#And acknowledging and representing that difficulty is okay

Thistle! He is a member of the Kin that shows up in Shattered Sky as a new recruit. He is a sign that the Kin's pseudo clan structure is breaking down, as he doesn't respect any manners regarding the prey pile and tries to take food away from Violetpaw, a much younger cat. He appears a couple times, is there with Roach when he brings back the Kittypets to the Kin, but then disappears when the Kin is disbanded.

Hopwhisker! She is the daughter of Yarrowleaf and Nettle, the Kin cat turned rogue who returned in the back half of A Vision of Shadows to try to steal back his kits. She is mentored by Whorlpelt. She is pretty much Allegiances only in all of Broken Code, but in the Starless Clan arc she gets a few appearances on patrols and such. She is mentioned by Sunbeam to have dared Lightleap to go into Riverclan territory alone, for which Lightleap was punished by Tigerstar to do apprentice duties for a moon. She is on a patrol with Sunbeam and Lightleap when she cuts her foot on twoleg trash near the boarder with Riverclan, and they decide to ask Mothwing for help because she is closer but the medicine cat won't let them enter camp. She is a decent fighter, and holds her own during the coup Berryheart leads with Riverclan against Shadowclan, notably being one of the few cats still battle ready at the end of the fight.

Hollowspring! He is Berryheart and Sparrowtail's kit, sibling to Sunbeam and Spireclaw. He is mentored by Grassheart and is a warrior in the Broken Code arc. When Shadowsight goes on a hunting patrol when he is on probation from his medicine cat duties the cat yelps at a bee that buzzes his ear and scares away prey Hollowspring was tracking, and the black cat comments that Shadowsight can get away with ruining a hunt because he's Tigerstar's kit. He appears on a few patrols in the Starless clan arc, and doesn't seem to think that peace will eliminate the need for boarders or battle training. He is a little bit of a mama's boy, and when Sunbeam moves to Thunderclan he turns away from her at a gathering to join his parents instead. When Berryheart is cast out Hollowspring volunteers to go with her and Sparrowpelt, showing his loyalty to his mother. He fights on the Riverclan side of the takeover of Shadowclan, though it is later revealed he was highly conflicted about doing so and is able to rejoin Shadowclan under the condition of future loyalty to his clan and Leader.

Pouncestep! Daughter of Tigerstar and Dovewing sister to Lightleap and Shadowsight, and mentored by Snowbird. She was saved by Spiresight from falling from an opening drawbridge during their journey home to Shadowclan from the city, which cost Spire his life. She is the background child, but that doesn't mean she has no characterization. She is proud of her siblings and they play fight as warriors, Pouncestep tells Shadowpaw that he could have been a warrior if he wanted. She teaches him some warrior moves that he utilizes in the Dark forest. She speaks up when Lightleap volunteers to enter the Dark Forest, saying that her sister is strong. She herself is pretty brave, known to have survived a wasp nest attack while hunting in a tree and to have fought off a dog by herself. She is also friendly toward her clanmates, participating in quite a few pranks and discussions, and is seen playing with Flaxfoot and daring him to throw a mouse over a tree branch moons before they become mates. She and Flaxfoot have two kits, Sprucekit and Redkit.

Lightleap! She is the Daughter of Dovewing and Tigerstar, sister to Pouncestep and Shadowsight, mentored by Stonewing. She is born in the City where the Guardian cats live and they travel back to the clans as kits. She is a spitfire, and I love that for her. She wants to be important and has one braincell. Himbo but girl. honestly, slay. I wasn't sure I was going to like her as much as I do, but I'm a lightleap fan. Tries to step up in the Broken Code arc to defend the clans in the Dark Forest, but loses her nerve and Shadowsight takes her place. After that she tries to prove herself several times, to both her peers and her clan. She also is Sunbeam's best friend, but lets her ego get in the way before falling for Sunbeams crush, which ultimately leads to them becoming distant. She protects Frostpaw in the climax of the arc, finally coming through on her desire to make a difference in the clans. I forgive her for being an idiot, she's trying her best.

I like this change for a graphic novel, it speedruns Cloudpaw’s arc so it can fit in the book better and also gives Princess time to shine.

Sunbeam! I love her, she is my Starless Clan MVP. She is the daughter of Berryheart and Sparrowtail, sister to Hollowspring and Spireclaw. She is mentored by Snaketooth and is an allegiances only warrior in the Broken code arc. As a protagonist, she is very relatable and kind, despite her mother's efforts to inspire xenophobia, and generally sees the good in other people. She doesn't like being treated like she is helpless, and feels frustrated when members of her clan feel pity for her loss of friendship with Lightleap and romantic relationship with Blazefire. She recognizes that though She and Nightheart have good rapport his choice to join Shadowclan to the conceived notion of her clan that they have a deeper relationship was premature, and though she helps him genuinely and feels fond of him over time, those feelings are developed as he tries to prove himself to shadowclan and not before. Once he fails his third trial on purpose she is hurt that he would choose his clan over her, but realizes that her ties to her clan aren't strong enough to make her want to stay when the cat she fell in love with is gone, and the crush she had on Blazefire doesn't compare to the connection she has with Nightheart, so her choice to follow him to Thunderclan feels well paced even though I was skeptical before reading the books. She then has to join Thunderclan without Nightheart, as he disappears on a quest for Starclan the day after she moves, and she gets to see the dynamic of switching clans from the outsider perspective. She develops a bond with Ivypool the new Deputy, and Bayshine Nighthearts' BFF. When Nightheart returns it is to the gathering where she stands up to her mother and claims she Joined Thunderclan not for her mate, but because it is where she feels like she belongs.
She is devastated when Berryheart is killed, and buries her body in it's designated lonely grave by the lake before attending her funeral in Shadowclan. Despite the lengths to which her mother goes Sunbeam still sees the good in her and mourns her deeply. As a character she is very steady in her ability to see the positive in any cat or situation, and despite the way others may treat her as fragile she doesn't grow hard or try to be brave out of insecurity, but continues to be fair and kind without needing to prove herself through being brazen or rude. I really liked reading her perspectives, and she reminds me a lot of my best friend for the strong ties she has to her family which are balanced with her perseverance in maintaining her own identity and beliefs.
I made her a cryptid tortishell despite that being genetically impossible (unless berryheart is also a cryptid tortie which. idk maybe it's under the white) because she has a ginger son. She is now the mentor to Moonpaw and continues to be a source of steady strength in the Changing Skies arc.

Spireclaw! He is the son of Berryheart and Sparrowtail, and sibling to Hollowspring and Sunbeam. His mentor is Yarrowleaf, and he is a warrior in the Broken Code arc even though he is only mentioned in the Allegiances. He is the unnamed tom in the prologue to the Starless clan arc who is eager to meet his cross clan lover Fringewhisker at a gathering. They are among the first cats to use the new rule to move Fringewhisker to Shadowclan, and he comforts Sunbeam about how complicated love is when Blazefire and Lightleap get together. He is in constant conflict with his mother, who hates his mate and wants her to leave Shadowclan, to the point of trying to trick her into breaking the warrior code by giving prey to skyclan, and adding additional trials for her to complete before she can be considered a true Shadowclan cat. He threatens to leave for Skyclan if Berryheart doesn't back off, but she is stubborn and treats him like her baby boy while continuing to be cold to Fringewhisker. As a result when Berryheart is exiled, Spireclaw doesn't show a lot of remorse, and stays with his mate in Shadowclan.
