While I'm generally in agreement with the social norm that unsolicited criticism on someone's creative work is rude, I think as a group fan culture and creative culture have overcorrected a bit and gone too far with the "no criticism allowed unless the creators explicitly tells you to give it!" standard. And it's created an unfortunate "asshole filter" that dramatically reduces the quality of criticism that does get through and makes it more likely to be hostile. People who ignore the norm and criticize your work publicly to your face anyway are disproportionately drawn from the "does not give a shit about social norms" subgroup which, unsurprisingly, contains a lot of assholes. And even if you do opt in, the filter is there, it just has a wider mesh.
What I really would like is a sub-community with slightly different norms - where polite criticism is opt-out instead of opt-in (sometimes you're just fucking around with a quick crack chatfic and don't want to be lectured about your grammar and pacing or whatever, I get it). And where there is encouragement to create good work. Like, nobody is going to walk up and tell you you suck and to stop creating if your work isn't, but when you're concerned about whether a plot point is good or not, you won't get 15 people rushing up to tell you that it doesn't matter and anything goes. I want to improve. I want to create better work, not get told to throw standards out the window. But I would also prefer to be in an equality-minded environment where I don't have to beg people to be honest with me and STILL not get any useful, polite critique because 95% of the audience is afraid to post anything but empty praise and the other 5% is largely populated by jerks.
I also really, really wish there was a subcommunity that welcomed and encouraged canon-compliant, in-character work. This is the direction I'm trying to go in, step by step - my current position with my WIP is no intentional contradictions, but there are probably a few small mistakes and a few questionable interpretations. I'm accepting this as a big step in what I consider the right direction. I'm not perfect, I'm getting better, it's fine. But most of what I see, especially in multi-fandom spaces, is praise for AUs and disdain for canon compliance, an attitude that OOC is fine and it doesn't have to make sense and so on, and this I think ties into the overcorrection thing. Gone are the days when everyone would jump all over you for minor innocent mistakes, and that's a good thing, but it would be nice to have people to talk to that will actually encourage each other to do our best work and not be flooded with AUs, even if we're all in different stages of the journey.

Can't believe Bruce canonically picked up a random 12yo homeless child who had no intent to become a vigilante and suddenly thrust Robin onto him without asking if that's what he wanted because he missed Dick (whom he fired because being Robin was too dangerous) and people still act like any take that's not "all the Batkids became vigilantes on their own completely independent of Bruce (who tried so hard to stop them but sadly just couldn't do it)" is a complete idiotic bad-faith take and that you're crazy if you disagree with people saying that Bruce has never ever absolutely NEVER picked up a kid for the purpose of making them into a vigilante.

A year ago I was inspired to make something that captured the exact aesthetic of a vintage, degraded VHS recording from the 90s, and I think I'm pleased with what I attempted.

A fact that may be of interest: Kaisagi has just surpassed Rinsagi in terms of the number of English language works on AO3.
Here's a more reliable metric. When you filter by otp: true, Rinsagi has 253 works... while Kaisagi has 282.

Fun fact!
Censoring/altering trigger warning tags makes them useless!
Adding #tw (Tr!gg3r) or #tw (+r1gg3r) or #tw (✝️r!gg3r) makes it so that they don't get filtered out by people who have #tw (trigger) filtered!
They don't count as trigger warnings anymore!
And I think you're a piece of shit for purposefully going around filter tags whilst pretending to care about triggers/trigger warnings!

Yeah, I basically had a similar reading on Insomniac!Harry as you did, I think - I do like him a lot, and I definitely see why he would the most popular version of him in the fandom right now, but he's a very smoothed over and simplified version who feels written to be as broadly loveable as possible, if that makes sense? I read a very thoughtful critique of the game recently that described Harry as being Peter's 'comically perfect' best friend, and I think that gets at the game's take on him and ties neatly into what you said about how the characters in Insomniac feel like they're written mostly to serve Peter's story and character, which is not necessarily a bad thing when he's the protagonist, but can flatten characters into narrative devices who don't necessarily feel like full characters; and any time Harry could be perceived as doing or saying something flawed, he's justified, or at least it's understandable, and it doesn't help that the last part of the game where he's Venom was rushed (not the fault of the devs for being pushed by corporate to meet a deadline they couldn't meet ofc) and it's not really clear how much is the symbiote amplifying his emotions, manipulating him, or outright controlling him like a puppet for its own agenda - but any way, it's very easy and probably correct to read him as not being truly at fault for anything.
Regarding Norman, my take is that I don't necessarily mind an interpretation of him that focuses on corporate greed and lack of ethics while exploring what if Norman was villainous, but genuinely loves and cares for his son in this universe, but MSM2 weirdly wanted both that and the usual drama from Harry being jealous of an abusive Norman choosing Peter over him, so we got that awkward scene where Norman is doing no such thing and still being a great father, but Harry mistakenly believes he's choosing Peter - so it's manufactured drama to follow the universes where Norman is abusive and Harry has issues from that, but here, everyone is still a good or at least neutral person at worst and it's all an honest mistake, which goes back to what you said about taking the edge out of the characters here - doesn't mean they're bad, like you also clarified, but definitely softer.
Can’t form intelligent thoughts because I need to go to sleep but I’m going to say I agree with all of the above. He’s very palatable in a way that just becomes boring for me. I’ll probably come back and contribute later when I’m not barely conscious.
For now, I agree especially because them wanting the Norman drama but also sort of pussying out of the Norman drama sort of like… feels like a good example of what I mentioned in that when you write an established character but change a major aspect of them, you need to compensate. They wanted the benefits of those arcs but weren’t willing to either include the original arcs or do the work to come up with something that can get to point b in a different way with what they’ve kept. It’s not the best writing decision in my opinion. And I agree with that articles assessment he feels like, comically perfect. Scrubbing away all his unsavory aspects lost him a lot of the ways he’s flawed and interesting because it often feels he exists solely to progress Peter’s arc rather than having the personal drama he often has.
I don’t personally like these softer versions. I’m not gonna say it’s bad or wrong to like those versions, but they definitely feel watered down when it’s not looked at in isolation or looked at more critically. It rapidly became boring for me.

So my wrist is still pretty busted (slowly getting better) and it’s driving me up the creative wall so I thought I could post some wips, sketches, and stuff (fanart + original) I never got around to finishing? Just to do something.
If you want to play along, I’d really appreciate it. I’ll post a couple or so over the next few days ♥️

Just say you think cp is ok as long as the minors are fictional you fuckin pedophile
Normally I ignore hostile or pre-judgmental asks on the off chances I get them, but I'll make exception for this one because it seems like a good opportunity for some much needed nuance-- also because I get this person's disgust, I really do.
But you, my fella, must understand that this isn't about the morality or even lack thereof behind dark fictional content, at all. You must realize that wanting dark and taboo fictional content (yes including that one you mentioned) not being allowed to exist actually does nothing to improve or protect irl lives, much on the contrary actually. No, I don't think there's any possible moral reason behind fictional cp content (nor do I find it 'ok',) but once again, this isn't about morality.
Please take a moment to read this thread (it words this topic better than me) then think it over. Trust me, it's a better use of your time than annoying ppl online with words you can't even bother standing up for with your name/face.

Bro I literally obsessed with the casino quartet now plssssss tell us more
omg . actually a lot of my Thoughts about them r au based but ^_^ i think while i am here i might as well share that they're named that is bc the idea of all of them working in a casino 2gether rlly caught on!! (this was mostly brought up by thegalacticbucket and things just sorta snowballed from there .)
anyways the fun dynamic between them is that red's a dealer + deals with the finances with clown, clowns the owner of the casino and manages the casino, branzy is there as eye-candy branzy is the shill aka he gets the games rigged for him so people r more inclined to gamble more bc he's winning a lot + he encourages them, and ash is the bartender! he has arm garters and makes drinks for all of them after hours
so dats the fun history lesson 2 why the 2 fics of them atm have 2 do w/ them working at a casino and chilling w each other and why they're called casino quartet ^_^ hope u enjoyed the Lore
