Obviously, DnD characters are wish fulfillment and lots of people don’t want to address the slow senescence of the vulnerable human form in their fun games. That being said, narratively, I do think that levels should probably fluctuate over the course of a lifetime. The level twenty world-saver is going not going to stay level twenty into their old age—that’s not how athletes and retirement work! Wisdom and Charisma casters maybe, but your STR/CON/DEX builds are going to soften with age. They might still be the spryest bastards in the old people tai chi group, but “terrifyingly in shape 70 year old” is not the same as “deadliest man on the planet”. Drop those old folks a few levels, give them some creaky bones and presbyopia. It’s good for them, promise.

Our friend Ti (variant) was playing ISAT yesterday and we were in vc with them. They were nearing their time to get ready for work and were like “should I fight the king now or should I just save and we can do something else until I have to leave” and the three of us—Undead, myself, and Butwhy—all knew this was their first king fight. We also knew how much it was hyped up by the game.

So what do we do?

“Dude you should fight it now and we can figure out something to do if you have time afterwards”

“If they have time?? It’s the king fight, do you want to boost their ego?”

“I’m being optimistic! It didn’t take us an hour to beat the king!”

We go through the whole Schtick, doing voices and playing it off as if the first king fight will be horrendous and difficult we all hell, even telling our horror story of the first time we fought the king (aka “the first time we did this and saw his bar go up that fast it was like ‘OUGH-‘ it was scary”)

It occurs to me, a straight male character who treated his sister the way Mara treated Uldren could never earn redemption, in most of fandom’s eyes. But since Mara is a female character who had a female lover, she barely even needs redemption, let alone having to earn it. They just announce “She’s good now! She wasn’t really bad in the first place!” and you all agree, like they swapped the chip in the gray Soyjak with the perfectly triangular nose.

The Kingdom of Rheged was a constitutional monarchy. Although originally a hereditary position, the queens of Rheged were later selected among the magically gifted as brought forward by the priestesses. Rheged queens also acted as spiritual leaders of the country, overseeing construction of temples for the Goddesses of the Seal and secure divine favor by theestablishment of their rule. Selection of the next queen involved dangerous rituals, and those in power as queen were capable of making broad religious decrees and ensuring peace with neighboring nations. This spiritual role came with restrictions, however, as the Queen of Rheged was required to never take a husband, restrictions presumably passed after the hereditary line of royalty was abolished. This rule would later be abolished by the thirteenth and last queen of Rheged, Buer, who took King Marchosias as her husband.

I decided to think of a family name for Sirene for when she was princess of Rheged. Since the hereditary system and original surname was lost after the seventh queen couldn’t have children, they would eventually pass down a surname in honor of the first queen to continue the lineage. I went with something Croatian since that’s where I think Rheged would be indicated by the shrine ruins in Chapter 2 and that the kingdom was more magic and goddess worship centered. The suffix -evic is “little" or "successor of” and the first queen of Rheged was named Eisheth.

Eishevic. “Successor of Eisheth”.

Eisheth was the first, 1000-1022. Descending from a clan of magicians, she was granted the title of nobility after the fall of the Intoner Empire. Known for fighting off fierce monsters and offering refuge to people. Her younger sister, Nestis, became the third Goddess of the Seal. Had taken a husband, Lucif, and bore two heirs.

Leraje was the second, 1022-1035. During the ensuing years, she successfully ruled and greatly expanded Rheged’s national power. She studied magic and brought a rule to never use it in the service of demons or evil, or to acquire power. Had taken a husband, Andrelphaus, and bore six heirs of which only one survived.

Paimonia was the third, 1035-1038. Locked in war with southern invaders, she fashioned a blade that blessed her with three lives. It was also a weapon of torture that would be banned by the kings of old. Had taken a husband, Balan, and bore four heirs.

Meridiana was the fourth, 1038-1045. The eldest of Paimonia’s children, who survived the Red Eye disease while her siblings did not. She established temples and shrines of religious worship outside of the Cult of the Watchers, offering tributes to the Goddesses of the Seal. Had taken a husband, Zagan, and bore three heirs.

Amy was the fifth, 1045-1052. The youngest of Meridiana’s children. Once locked in war with the kingdom of Caerleon, she established peace and agreement with the construction of the Castle of the Goddess. Had taken a husband, Allocer, and bore a lone heir.

Lilith was the sixth, 1052-1056. She had a forceful personality and bright intellect, having accomplished much in her youth. She fought bravely to liberate her people during the Red Eye invasion. Had taken a female lover, Lady Naamah, after her two husbands, Ronove and Amon, were executed by the disease with her two heirs.

Samiginia was the seventh, 1056-1069. While she loved Lord Gremory, she was arranged to wed Lord Crocell. She was unable to bear children, thus she changed the law so that people with strong magic could ascend to the throne and did away with the hereditary system. She established further diplomatic relationships with other kingdoms.

Byleth was the eighth, 1069-1073. Successor of Samiginia, she was able to wield lightning magic, implant magic into weapons, and have powerful hypnosis. Facing numerous invasions from foreign powers who attempted to conquer it through military force. She eventually abdicated after taking numerous terms due to popularity among her subjects.

Kimaris was the ninth, 1073-1075. A shrine maiden who worked with Byleth as her lady-in-waiting. Capable of healing and decaying magic through ancient incantations. Having to finish the remaining forces from foreign invasions, she established the kingdom’s internal affairs, improved economy, and administrative offices outside of magic. She had twin sons, though the father remains unknown.

Furfur was the tenth, 1075-1077. A quiet yet ill woman who served as a priestess, she was capable of poison magic and swapping souls between bodies. Her frail body gave out after purifying an old beggar with Red Eye Disease and resulted in her death.

Glasya-Labolas was the eleventh, 1077-1080. A self-taught sorceress capable of powerful blue fire magic and a plethora of dark magic spells. She established the usage of dark arts within the court, though the opinion was very unpopular. Her three nephews would later contract the Red Eye Disease and join the Empire.

Levia was the twelfth, 1080-1088. A powerful sorceress, regarded with respect by her peers. As such, she possessed a wide range of magical talent, becoming the most powerful queen from a young age, among her powers was the ability to wield blood magic and tame dragons. Unfortunately, after years of becoming queen, she experienced bouts of mania followed by depression.

Buer was the thirteenth and last, 1088-April 1093. The younger sister of the twelfth goddess, Asherah. A vision of grace, wisdom, and strength of character, Buer was fiercely dedicated to the well-being of her family and kingdom, carrying the weight of the kingdom’s peace on her shoulders. Having taken a husband, King Marchosias, she failed to have children with him. She adopted Sirene as a precautionary heir, abolishing the rule in favor of the old hereditary bloodline. She died from an invasion by the Empire along with her husband...

I mean it is clearly doing something, I retook the sf-36 (and also added a new row for the average scores as reported in 1992 from a sample of around 2500 people who were already at the doctor's office so it is going to be skewed low compared to true population average) and this is the one and only time since I started using the measure in 2019 that I have had 3 consecutive months of green. (I got 2 months in a row of green one time, in 2021 when we finally started treating it like mcas.)

also like. the max is 100, my guesstimation of before I got sick was in the high 90s, the overall average from the paper is 64.4, and I'm still at 26.7, so. it is still Very Bad. it's just. actually moving less-bad, consistently, which has uh. never happened before lol (it's also the best I've been since arin left, after that brief respite in april last year that took time to wear off. before that the best was the prednisone in 2023 which also wore off rapidly, and before that the best was before I got covid in 2022. I actually had a year of mostly-in-the-40s when we finally started treating my mcas as mcas, except the 2 months dip back into the teens because of the vaccine which is also why I can't get a booster.) (my ultimate goal is boy howdy it would be nice to be stably hovering around 50. I can tolerate an average of 50 long term. if I can actually stably get higher than that that would be neat, but I don't need it.)

but fr though I am of the opinion that they were both at fault in this situation and that there was no clear true victim because they were both gigantic douchebags who made it worse than it needed to be and are incapable of thinking themselves of being in the wrong.

in fact I think if they were to tell their stories they would frame themselves as the victims in their respective cases.

like a rashomon effect type case where we see vox's perspective and he frames alastor as being the one entirely in the wrong "he used me. he didn't see me as anything but a source of entertainment. then when I poured my heart out to him he threw me out like I meant nothing. he was just leading me on." and alastor is completely framed as an unjustified dickbag and vox as the victim who did nothing wrong.

and then on alastor's end he frames vox as being the one entirely in the wrong "he only saw me as a disgusting object of lust. he pushed my boundaries. he couldn't take no for an answer and got pissy." and vox is a lot more overtly creepy in his version and alastor leaves out any possible faults he himself may have.

but the reality is that it's not as black and white as they make it out to be, in a way they're both right but they're also both wrong and refuse to acknowledge their own faults in the situation. I like to think they both saw elements of a genuine friendship in their relationship but in the end thought the other never saw it as meaning anything. the falling out was as bad as it was because they were both assholes, alastor being a dickbag who is incapable of letting someone down easy, vox being an entitled asshole who thinks he deserves what he wants and more.

of course this isn't to say there isn't sympathetic elements on both sides regardless, on vox's side well, considering he was from the 50s, alastor could very well have been the first man he was allowed to openly like and then he got brutally rejected. on alastor's side, like I said, #1 man hater tried to make one male friend and it ended up working out terribly, possibly had his boundaries crossed, only proving his previous views to him that men suck.

I saw so many "Alastor ruined Vox" takes but how about: Vox ruined Alastor? What if Alastor just wanted good, comfortable friendship like he has with Rosie but one day he learned that this whole time Vox saw him as sexual object and in his eyes this frienship that Alastor genuinely cherished was just a temporary thing on the way to RomanceTM.

I might overestimate Alastor's sensitivity but on the other hand I believe that he's as much human as any other sinner and craves very human things, like safety and some levels of intymacy.
