when emma’s hurt by something, she pushes it down and away and pretends until she can’t anymore. she bends and bends and sometimes she can steady herself, pull herself back from the precipice. until she breaks, and all the hurt springs back and she’s an open wound. a lost girl who’s always running, always afraid. emma fears her pain will make her unlovable. that the people she loves will leave if they realize the breadth of the wounds she carries. emma is bruised knuckles and hard, lonely eyes and an indescribable ache.

regina is more obvious in her hurt. she’s angry. a storm. she wields her pain as a weapon. she is not afraid to be seen in her intensity. often, it’s a mask to cover to the grief she feels. her life has been a series of losses strung together with only her as a constant. love is often the source of her pain. she feels so much hurt because she has the capacity for so much love. beyond the anger is so much self loathing and hatred. anger is the easier of the two. she is rage and she is destruction, and if she can’t find someone to destroy, she destroys herself.

emma grew up angry, regina grew up sad. they both became what they needed to survive.

HIII YESSS I WILL !! thank you for enabling my insanity several things, this might not just be ocd emma there is some highlight on just traumatized emma..

most of this stemmed from a fic i started where emma has a diary, and its very mental health focused. i might reference it a few times when its relevant.. also shameless promotion.. (one day i will finish it..)

and im looking at this through a lense of canon.. i have my own separate swanqueen + ocd emma thoughts but.. (also prepare for me inserting a lot of gifs by my favorite ouat gif makers 🙏🙏)

so with aspects of being the savior:

it begins with henry. i think of this quote,

shes not his mother. she can't be, she gave up that right when she gave him up. so she has to take on another role. she becomes his hero. she has to be someone he idolizes.

then august comes around and tells her shes the savior of the entire town. she didn't sign up for that, like she says. shes henry's savior. she's henry's hero. and now she has to be everyone's savior?

in that scene i kind of imagine her thinking, "why do i have to save everyone when no one was there to save me as a kid?"

with her taking on the role as the savior, she kind of starts to make it her whole identity. i dont think it was just a weird writing choice i think it does reflect a purposeful thing with her character. that she has an absence of identity. (because of growing up as a foster kid and all the times she's been abandoned in her life)

she really isn't given a choice with becoming the savior. once she breaks the curse, its pushed onto her, and she can't just leave henry so she kind of just has to deal with it. and then she slowly starts to accept it and internalize it.

because it becomes what every interaction is centered around. someone needs saved. she has to fight a villain. she needs to save someone. every interaction she has with anyone except henry is savior, savior, savior.

"IF I DON'T HELP PEOPLE, THEN WHO AM I?" and finally she has parents who are proud of her. which she has wanted her whole life,

to quote myself from another post of my emma ramblings,

because that IS all she wanted. all she wanted was her family and she had to put up with so much to have them. she overlooks all of her own trauma because in her mind its like, "Hey why am i complaining. i have a family". and NEVER speaks up for herself.

she can't really complain that her parents are putting her on this pedestal, because she has her parents now so she should just be grateful. (and to be fair she does get snappy with them at times but in my opinion shes eventually (like after season 2/3) starts repressing the years of anger at the people who "gave her up" unless shes really upset)

constantly, through out the entire show, her entire life is just savior, savior, savior, savior, savior-

its compulsive. do you get what i mean. its her routine and if she isn't the savior, she's the same person who gave up henry and ran away from everything. and she can't be that again. its so black and white to her. shes extreme with it.

she makes it her entire identity. i mean this goes on for 6 seasons.

and her fear of hurting people is another ocd trait, which is DEFINITELY SOMETHING HIGHLIGHTED IN THE SHOW:

the ingrid arc when shes convinced her powers are hurting people. so she runs into the woods and isolates herself. like she stays in that car for almost like a day i think? i could be remembering wrong. i know she atleast sleeps in there. she almost completely gets rid of her powers until at the last moment elsa talks her out of it.

she becomes the dark one (more on that further on) and, well, canon spells it out for me:

because ingrid wasn't just saying shit. this is emma's deepest worst fears. her truest thoughts.

oh and her relationships/friendships/partnerships reflect this too

magic has a price. i think she'd start believing that the price of being united with her family is being the savior. she stops questioning that putting her life on the line all the time is just what it takes for her to have a family.

i think she suffers a lot from not understand unconditional love. i think she'd imagine all these different expectations and condtions that people put on their love for her (like her parents). i dont include henry in that, i think thats the only person who she believes really loves her

and killian. oh, killian..

at first, its not love. but its something. and killain really likes her and maybe hes not so bad, so she gives him a chance and goes on a date with him.

the dark swan plot line happens and emma is now trying to balance her feelings for hook and being a mother and being a daughter and being a sister and being the savior and trying not to give into the darkness. but killian is there to support her if she lets her walls down, she can start to see a future with him. but then killian, the fucking idiot, gets himself fatally hurt. then he'll be gone. just like neal. and if she loses him, then its proof shes not supposed to be happy. if she loses him, then its her fault, she failed as the savior, and she can't lose her identity on top of losing him

it's horribly paradoxical in a way. she's the savior, so she has to save people. she has to save killian or she's failed being the savior, but to do so she has to give into the power. so she has to decide which is worse, losing him and losing her identity or risk losing her sanity and falling too deep into the darkness.

and so she does the very thing she swore not to do. the very thing everyone was afraid of happening. she fully gives into the power, into the darkness so she can save him. to save HIM.

to me its like, she promises to herself she'll make it up to them and she wont let them down after this. one last time. one last failure.

("How many times have you saved them? How often have you felt more like a savior than their daughter? And all it takes is one tiny mistake, one accident, and you and your powers go from being their salvation to their worst nightmare." - Ingrid)

and she takes everyones memories of everything that happened in camelot and she almost achieves it. but then hook gets his memories back and goes dark and curses her entire family. then everything she's been holding back for months kind of crumbles.

she resolutes it in her mind that theres only one solution; to sacrifice herself to stop killian and to save her family. shes the savior, after all, isn't that what shes supposed to do?

killian stops the curse by sacrificing himself. and then everyone else is grieving but moving on. but emma is stuck there. she can't move on because hook was supposed to be her future. he said it himself. and regina is with robin and her parents have her baby brother. everyone has purpose and she's just a failed, broken savior. shes just kind of stuck. so she thinks its hook. the answer has to be with hook. getting him back would fix everything.

excerpt from my fic, "My happy ending is gone and it seems like no one sees that. My happy ending was belonging. My happy ending was being loved. My happy ending was falling in love with someone who will love me back."

so she goes into the underworld. and i dont have anything really remarkable to say about underworld but heres these two things:

in the end, she gets killian back, but at what cost? robin died. she ruined regina's happy ending.

season 6 doesn't really add anything specific that i haven't already put here. the only important thing is the therapy session between her and archie which i've mentioned already. if i have more thoughts i'll add to this later. but i am tired as hell so.. here. sorry if this is messy and entirely not cohesive.

Okay, so this might be extremely random and not at all significant, but does anyone else think about how Emma and Regina went from, "get the hell out of my life," to "hey, we should probably exchange numbers"?

I find myself thinking more and more about how the number exchange happened. Like who asked who? And when?

saw a sq say emma only chose hook and storybrooke over regina and henry in 7x02 because she was pregnant....whatever that means

Emma didn't choose Hook over Henry. Henry was choosing his own path which was leading him away from home. Emma was the adult who was allowing her adult son room to grow up and find his way. Regina was the one who is too co-dependent and was doing the fairy tale equivalent of following your child to college.

Regina Mills was never one of Emma Swan's choices. Not even for a moment. Emma never considered her. Emma only ever considered her a friend because of retconned Henry. You think they'd understand that after Emma continuously chose Hook.

P.S. This was the moment where Emma Swan chose Killian Jones and the moment she claimed him as her happy ever after forever amen

Oooh, tell me about a great day the navy way, please?

So this is a Captain Swan AU I came up with a while ago!!! It's almost like a roleswap au, but instead it's role share. Emma and Killian are both in the navy together, and then after the dark curse falls they're both bailbondspersons together.

What I have written so far is mostly about Emma first joining the navy, and it's largely a product of my time at the truck stop, a sort of putting her through a lot of the struggles I was going through in my own workplace. I never really got anywhere with the fic though 😅

Men fell hush, then murmured, then whispered to their buddies and pointed and stared as a blonde woman climbed the ladder, and by the time she set both her feet on the deck and saluted goodbye to the soldier who'd rowed her across, the whole top deck was staring in awe- but none more in awe than their lieutenant. "Hang it all!" Killian thought, trying to gather words to greet her. "No one warned me she was going to be gorgeous!"

okay but can we PLEASE talk about the s1 fight in the hospital closet??!?!? It was such a pivotal moment between Emma and Regina. I mean the way Regina's face drops when she realises that Emma's figured it all out. And Emma's face of absolute utter bewilderment when Regina says "actually he (Mr Gold) goes by Rumplestiltskin..."

There is just SO MUCH to unpack with that entire sequence. I wanna hear your thoughts.

Oh man. That scene is beautifully done and such a wonderful portrayal of how great Lana and Jen are at what they do. Being that angry and still being believable is no easy feat so absolute kudos to them

There are a few things that stand out to me with this scene

One, the absolute dread on Regina’s face when Emma tells her Henry was the one who ate the apple turnover. This isn’t what she expected at all and in this moment, her villainy is literally about to cause her to lose the most important person in her life and she knows it

And yeah, that moment where she realizes Emma knows about the curse is so fucking good! The way her head goes back! The way she closes her eyes right before she admits it! The way this is the first time in 28 years Regina is admiting to the curse’s existence (besides Rumple and Jefferson, but those situations are vastly different)

“You wake him up!” and “I can’t!” Thinking about how, at this time, that’s absolutely true. Regina doesn’t share true love with Henry right now because although she would give away the world for him, he sees her as a villain. She literally can’t wake him up. Only Emma can.

The pause when she says that that was the last of the magic she had, right before she gets pissed again that it didn’t put Emma asleep instead

Emma’s shaky voice when she asks Regina if Henry could die, Regina’s admission that yeah, that’s where they’re at right now

This shot, which is so beautiful in so many different ways I could cry

The fear in Regina’s voice when she says they need to go and talk to Rumple. The way that fear turns quickly into anger. The way Emma knows who she’s talking about without Regina even saying his name

And the “are you fucking kidding me” look on Emma’s face when Regina says he goes by Rumplestiltskin

Kid/Parent Dialogue Prompts

4. "With the rate uncles/aunts/grandparents/friends are buying stuff for you, you will be the most spoiled kid ever"

"Do you ever get the feeling that they're going to grow up as the most spoiled kids ever?"

Emma glances at August with her eyebrows raised, quietly puzzled. "What are you talking about?"

Technically, they should be getting coffee like the grown adults, friends-who-rarely-get-to-catch-up that they are, but since there is a distinct lack of free, unaccompanied time in both of their lives now, what they're actually doing is drinking their coffee at the outside tables of Granny's while their sister and daughter respectively entertain each other. Of course, it was clear within minutes that the girls had no intention of doing so - Apple is currently burying her hands in the potted plants, alone, while Cedar is nowhere to be seen, having long since wandered into the bowels of the diner.

That doesn't seem to bother August much, however, because he continues, undeterred: "You have possibly the largest extended family in town- how much stuff have people bought for your sister, Raven or Sparrow, and how long has it been since you've heard anyone saying no to them? Because I am related to considerably fewer people, and our house is still full of kids' stuff, and I know Belle has the same problem with Rosa and Gideon."

He...has a point, actually. Emma has long since matured past the point of being jealous, but that doesn't mean she's blind - children are protected and splurged on for in Storybrooke, especially children she knows. Apple is likely the best dressed little girl in town, and the way Henry tells it, Raven and Sparrow own just about every toy that makes noise. Nobody in her family will grow up wanting for attention, that's for sure.

Still, there's a difference between agreeing with August and telling him that out loud. "Come on, I'm sure it's not that bad-"

It's at that moment, as if summoned by her comment, that Cedar shows up on Granny's front step, like a little bushy haired apparition. The girl trots over to them with what looks like a cup of pudding, spoon included, in one hand and a small sandal in the other - she offers it to August with a miniature frown, shifting her weight off her bare foot. "Daddy, I los' m' shoe."

"Wow, a sentence I've never heard before," August deadpans, though he still lifts his daughter onto his knee with practiced ease, only gesturing to her other possession once he's done wrestling said shoe back in its place. "Where did you get that, kiddo?"

Cedar grins at him, the wide, gap-toothed smile of toddlers all over the world - there are already smears of chocolate around her mouth, which means she must have gotten more than a taste of her treat by now. "Grampa."

"Of course you did." He pats her back as she hops off his lap, then turns back to Emma with a look and a gesture that scream What did I tell you? for all to see.

For her part, Emma simply rolls her eyes. "Alright, you've made your point. Look, if it bothers you so much, why don't you tell everyone to stop buying her stuff?"

"Did your mother listen when you tried to do that?"

"Point taken." She mulls it over for a bit, watching the little figure bound away, then says, distractedly: "Does letting them be the most spoiled kids ever include allowing them to run with a spoon in their mouth?"

August follows her gaze, then stands up with a muffled curse and chases after his daughter before she falls on her face. Emma barely stifles her laughter, grateful that at least she's not still losing the argument - for a moment there, both father and child looked entirely too smug for her liking, which tends to be the only expression where they share an uncanny resemblance.

She just hopes Cedar will lose that trait as she grows up. She doesn't think she could bear it, if she had two Augusts to contend with.
