Emma slumped down at her desk, a heavy sigh tumbling from her lips. She had already finished the reports she had been putting off all week, and now was just waiting until she could go home. Her thoughts slowly drifted to the Mayor.

Regina had been on her mind quite a lot recently. The brunette had recently gone undercover with the Queens of Darkness. It had Emma running around in circles like an anxious dog waiting for its owner to come home. 

In hindsight, her insistence about following around might have come off as creepy. Emma had sat with that night for days after, bewildered by the strength of her own emotions. The fear of Regina being in danger had awakened something in her she didn’t want to name. Her and Regina had finally gotten back to a good place. The mayor seemed to have forgiven her for the whole Marion situation, or at least had moved on from it.

Things were good. They were friends. No need to make it complicated.

Yet, sitting alone in the station, her mind ran wild. She could imagine Regina walking in, chastising her for wasting her time doing nothing. Then, the mayor would sigh and shake her head fondly, with that adorable, sweet smile reserved only for Henry and Emma-

Friends, Emma reminded herself. She shoved the dangerous, traitorous idea down and pulled out her phone to check the time. An unread text announced itself with a big read notification symbol. She looked around to make sure she was alone before opening it.

REGINA: I know you’re at work, but Henry had a bad day at school. I was thinking seeing his favorite bad influence at dinner might make him feel better? 

EMMA: rude. i am such a good influence. lol. what are you making?

REGINA: Come find out. 🖤

Emma didn’t need to be face-to-face to have the sense she was being lied to. But that was ridiculous, right? What would Regina be lying about? She almost brushed it off until something strange occurred to her. She pulled up her calendar to double check before shooting off another text to Regina,

EMMA: regina, it's saturday?

REGINA: Ah. I apologize for lying to you.

REGINA: I was trying to surprise you.

EMMA: surprise me with what, dinner? 

REGINA: ..That part was true.

EMMA: if henry wants me to come over you can just say that

REGINA: Well, I would just say that, if Henry was even here.

REGINA: He’s spending the night at a friend’s house.

EMMA: are you trying to invite me over for dinner, just the two of us?

REGINA: Yes.

REGINA: I think I am.

EMMA: just dinner? nothing else?

REGINA: That depends on what you want, Emma.

She chuckled. There was never a world where she would’ve thought the mayor would get shy. 

EMMA: i’ll be there in 10
