Colorado Club Q shooting: Attacker sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty
The attacker who killed five people at an LGBT nightclub in Colorado last year has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to murder and attempted murder. Victims called Anderson Lee Aldrich, 23, a "coward" and a "monster" for the rampage at Club Q in Colorado Springs on 19 November 2022. The shooting was stopped by club-goers, who subdued the attacker until police arrived. The victims who were killed were Daniel Aston, 28; Derrick Rump, 38; Kelly Loving, 40; Ashley Paugh, 34; and, Raymond Vance, 22. The attack left 17 others wounded. As part of a plea deal, the attacker was sentenced to five consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, and 46 consecutive 48-year sentences for the attempted murders, in addition to pleading "no contest" to charges of bias-motivated crimes. "When you commit a hate crime, you are targeting a group of people for their simple existence," Judge Michael McHenry said. "The sentence in this court is that such hate will not be tolerated." Judge McHenry added that he believes Aldrich's actions "reflect the deepest malice of the human heart". "And malice is almost always born of ignorance and fear," Judge McHenry added. My #1 post of 2022
my body has been wracked with grief since the shooting at Club Q on Trans Day of Remembrance, exactly 42 years after the shooting in Greenwich at multiple gay bars. That it happened in the same week a gay bar in nyc has had a brick thrown through their window 3 times. for all the moments we don’t make the news for.
i don’t have anything transformative to say and i’m beyond empty. yet, i still find myself dreaming through death and massacre and criminalization,
of a world where we live long lives
of a world i get to meet you
of a world we kiss our lovers and friends not worrying it’ll be the last
of a world where you get home safe, a world where you got home safe.
i’m waiting for your “got home safe” text. i’m waiting to hear the door unlock and to know you survived.
i feel desperate to keep going, not out of spite but dedication. for every moment taken away from us i will carry you with me. and if an early grave comes for me we’ll still find a way forward.
it wasn’t your time and you’re still gone. rest in peace is a cheap salve but i hope you find it; rest and peace.
Daniel Davis Aston, Raymond Green, Kelly Loving, Ashley Paugh, Derrick Rump.

fic asks! (sorry the formatting is so weird) ✨ Give you and your writing a compliment. Go on now. You know you deserve it. 😉 🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc. ❌ What’s a trope you will never write? 🤩 Who is your favorite character to write?
thank you!!!
✨ Give you and your writing a compliment. Go on now. You know you deserve it. 😉
Hahaha, I think I can be proud of being the ✨ trailblazer ✨in some ships, like, being the second person on AO3 to publish a Rakidrić story, or being the first one there to post a Gavi/Pedri fic in English - and look at the numbers nowadays. I like having the variety, different ships, while I hopefully manage to keep the dynamics different for all of them? idk. But yeah, I think that's something to be proud of, the variety, and setting new ships to sail.
🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.
It definitely depends on the type of fic. If it's about an established relationship where the two are genuinely in love, I think there will always be a scene where one of them just looks at the other in awe of how beautiful they are. I think I kinda enjoy the "power dynamics" and "balancing/completing each other" thing, where basically the two people find something that completes them in the partner - in a good or bad sense. In the darker sense, I like the topic of being jealous/envious and wanting to own the other (Klopp with Coutinho, before Ron with Dybala), or to be the other (recently with Emery and Mikel), or feeling the "connection in desperation" where it's unclear whether the two hate or love each other (like with Paquetá/Scamacca, or briefly Weghorst/Vydra).
❌ What’s a trope you will never write?
I'm not a big fan of the tropes like "soulmates", "A/B/O", things like that, since I'm not very much into supernatural or fantasy stuff (so no Mpreg, gender-bending etc. either). Or any type of character "going into heat" or something. Tbh I can't see myself writing "fake dating" thing since I always try to make my fics believable (as in "this could be happening, who knows"), and I don't see a reason why footballers would be fake dating each other.
tbh I do enjoy and find comfort in truly loving relationships - like Grizione, Lichantony, Ashley Barnes/Ashley Westwood (the peak of rare pairing) or Pedri/Gavi. I can't really imagine writing something completely angsty (like no comfort, break up, character death etc.) with these pairings - like them breaking up or truly ending up fucked up. They are just too pure and in love for that.
🤩 Who is your favorite character to write?
I REALLY loved writing Luka, he's such a tiny cute bean but also a strong-minded man, it's insane. I loved having Raketa head over heels for him hehe. But more recently, Gianluca Scamacca and Unai Emery. Maybe because almost nobody else writes for them so I can "create them" on my own, but also because I genuinely find them both fascinating. The idea of Scamacca - with his gangster father, with his tattoos, with his flair, with his bad boy look - being stuck in a relegation battle in London with Moyes as a manager is great (not for me as a West Ham fan though).
Unai's redemption arc of winning the Europa League with Villareal (and kicking Arsenal out of the cup in the process), coming back to England, and now building his project with Aston Villa is amazing. He could well be a villain coming for his "justice" - if he wasn't such an erratic workaholic sweetie desperate for the fans' love lol. So the circumstances, the behavior, the way the people present themselves make them interesting to analyze and then "build" in the fictions. Same with Cholo tbh, his love with Griezmann is insane in real life, and it feels good to transmit it into shippy stuff.

character name: Neena Wagner age & birthday: 25, October 23rd, 1998 gender & pronouns: Cis woman, She/Her place of birth & time in East Haven: Born in Boston and raised in East Haven, left for college district: Mount Aston occupation: True Crime podcaster faceclaim: Simone Ashley family: Nick Wagner, Johnny Wagner, TBD Wagner, Verity Wagner, Summer Cavanagh, Waverly Erickson, Alec Kincade
CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY TWs: teen pregnancy, death
PAST
Neena often thinks of her birth as something far removed from her self. It is separate and has no tie to who she is, in her mind it is almost the same as being born from a surrogate or even an incubator. Neena’s birth mother gave birth to her at the tender age of 17 and quickly gave her up for adoption. Thankfully, a married couple who had just had the devastating news of no longer being able to have another child by birth were looking for the perfect final addition to their family. Naomi and Nick Wagner soon were linked to baby Neena in her Boston orphanage and fate delivered them the perfect baby girl. The birth certificate may have said Neena Konar, but she’s never thought of that name as any importance to her - Wagner is her real name. Neena was taken home by the Wagners after all the paperwork was finished when she was only a few months old and to her, that was her real family. Growing up, Neena never looked at Naomi or Nick as anything other than her real parents. They were the ones who wanted her when her own birth incubator did not.
When Neena was still young, her father was still playing football professionally. There are many photos and videos of little baby Neena dressed up for her father’s team and sitting on his shoulders during the post-game interviews. And since her father retired when she was still in elementary school, she had something her older siblings never had, her father around for all of her childhood. Naomi and Nick doted on Neena while making sure to connect her with her culture. She attended classes and festivals and was raised to learn everything about her Indian background. While Neena appreciated that from her parents, she saw the Wagner’s culture as her own as well in addition. Both held meaning to her, and she never saw one above the other. She liked how it created a colorful tapestry for her background.
Neena was vivacious from a young age, and could often be described as dramatic and extra. Growing up, she was always the one to fill a room with her personality, and to be the center of attention. Neena tried almost every extracurricular activity she could and though she dropped a lot, she liked trying everything there was to offer. She took plenty of art classes, participated in theater in high school, was on the dance team, ran for student government and even was prom queen. Never one to fit into one box, Neena was popular, approachable and kind, but a wild child as well. She surely gave her parents many gray hairs as they struggled to raise her. Neena often snuck out of the Wagner house to attend parties, she was brought back drunk by the local cops, and even once got dared to steal a neighbor’s lawn mower and accidentally ended up with it in the lake in the person’s backyard drunk and laughing hysterically. Her parents tried to protect her as best they could with their connections, but she did face consequences with community service to keep her underage record clean.
It was soon after her 18th birthday that Neena finally reached out to the orphanage to figure out who her birth mother was. She had often wondered who her birth mother was and what the circumstance of her adoption had been. But, she never had thought of Naomi and Nick as anything but her real parents. Finding this woman would never replace them. Only fill out some questions she had. But, when she finally tracked down the woman, it only cemented how little this woman was even a birth mother, she’d been nothing but an incubator Neena was carried in. The woman had been shocked, and horrified to find Neena showing up. She’d been embarrassed and ashamed of her, scooting her away like she was some undesirable showing up on her doorstep to beg for her most prized position. Like she was a criminal. The woman had shooed Neena away, the big ring and big house of her family that had no idea about their mother’s teenage pregnancy. Eventually, Neena left in tears and swearing that the egg and sperm donators who created her were nothing but incubators who only served to get her to her real family - the Wagner’s.
Eventually she did graduate high school and left to attend NYU in the fall. Neena majored in marketing and double minored to satisfy by her loves of art and history. She visited on some weekends, and was always glad to show her parents the city that had become her new home. She thrived, partying and living up to her glamorous and wild child reputation. Neena loved New York City and all the city had to offer, even when she got to see the underbelly this city still felt like a new home. After graduation, she got a marketing job over in Brooklyn and worked for almost a year before she figured out the 9-5 office job wasn’t for her. Even with the creative outlet of her job, she still felt stifled and boxed in. Was this really what she wanted for the next 80 years? Working day in and day out in the same cubicle, the same office, the same tasks that she just got to do all over again with a different project each week? She felt like she was drowning and quit. Neena could have stayed in New York if she wanted, even without a job she knew her parents would have supported her while she figured out the next step. But she didn’t know the next step.
Truthfully going back to East Haven wasn’t a downgrade or a loss to her, Neena saw it as she was just going back to sort out her thoughts and figure out her next move. If that meant going back to New York, she’d be happy to go there, or another city, or even stay in her home town. While in college, Neena had started a true crime podcast just out of a fun hobby. It had done well, and during her time in her marketing job, she grew her following and started to market merch as well as a few paid episodes and even paid sponsorship. It was there she realized she could make this her full time job and support herself. Starting off with a converted shed in her parent’s backyard, Neena started to record there before she eventually earned enough money to but a small studio herself downtown. With a job like this, she realized she could go wherever she wanted and Neena had been thinking of where she wanted to move next when the worst thing happened.
The truth was, her parents had found out Naomi was sick when they found out she couldn’t have another child. For Neena’s whole life, her parents had hid Naomi’s disease, and eventual end. It was during this time that the truth of her mom’s sickness came out. Neena of course stayed in East Haven, refusing to leave her mom now. Before her eyes, her mom quickly declined and soon the family was burying the sweetest woman anyone had ever known. She struggled with the grief and loss at first, as did the rest of her family. Her mom couldn’t die, she couldn’t have been sick her whole life. None of this could be real. But it was.
PRESENT
Eventually, Neena did decide to stay in East Haven. Maybe not forever, maybe eventually she would move to another city to do her podcast, but for right now her dad was still here and she didn’t want to leave him. Johnny was back too and finally engaged to Stevie who she always knew would be her sister in law, even if her brother had been so stupid to wait all these years. Her podcast is doing great, she’s even planning a tour to do a live show across the country, and though she still misses her mom every day, life is still going on and there is still so much to do and experience. Life is for living and the light in Neena will never go out.

Club Q shooter changes plea to guilty on federal hate crime charges
Anderson Lee Aldrich pleaded guilty to each of the 74 charges of violating provisions of the Matthew Shepard And James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009 as well as gun crimes in the Club Q shooting. Aldrich initially pleaded not guilty. Federal prosecutors are recommending a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be followed by a 190-year sentence of imprisonment, according to court documents filed on June 4. Prosecutors said in a Jan. 9 filing they would not be seeking the death penalty. The sentencing recommendation details Aldrich's alleged past use of online platforms "to express anti-gay and anti-transgender views," use of anti-gay slurs and harassment of a gay co-worker in the years preceding the attack. In addition to the federal charges, Aldrich was already sentenced to over 2,000 years in state prison in June 2023 after pleading guilty to five counts of murder in the first degree and 46 counts of attempted murder in the first degree. Aldrich pleaded no contest to two bias-motivated crimes.
Daniel Davis Aston, Kelly Loving, Derrick Rump, Ashley Paugh and Raymond Green Vance were killed in the attack.

books i read in 2022
so, last year i read 290 books, a statistic i put down to the fact i spent much of 2021 unemployed. this year i was employed all year round and managed to increase that total to 300, admittedly in part due to a concerted effort over christmas to read more.
i set myself three goals this year to read more non-romance, non-fiction, and more physical books. as with 2021, i tracked my reading habits over the year, tracking things such as genre, tropes/plot points, months read, etc.. so with that in mind, i'll go into some statistics:
of the 300 books i read, 275 of them were romance books. I did not read as many non-romance books as i intended - my next most-read genre was mystery/crime/thriller. 12 of the non-romance books i read had romance as a major subgenre. i also only read 3 non-fiction books all year, way, way behind the goal i set myself at the start of the year.
281 books i read were ebooks. i read 18 physical books and 1 audiobook. again, this fell behind the goal i set myself at the start of this year. i owned most of the books i read this year - 146 in total - and i leaned a lot more into reading KU books, having read 88. i also read a lot of ARCs this year - 57 in total. i'm going to be more careful about how many ARCs i take on in 2023 because i found it quite hard to keep up with it, but i did read some interesting things.
my most productive months of reading were april and may - i read 36 books in both months. most of the books were novel-length - 263 - and i read 37 novellas.
as in 2021, i continued to track cover types, based on ongoing debates about illustrated covers on romance novels. as with last year, the vast majority of books i read featured a lone man on the cover (54), closely followed by more traditional - and variations of - a clinch cover, of which i read 52. i read 24 books with the type of "cute" illustrated covers, which was higher than last year.
tracking tropes and content, my most read trope was forced proximity - i read 71 books featuring this trope - followed by hate-to-love (which includes enemies-to-lovers, rivals-to-lovers, etc.), having read 64 books with that trope; this is the reverse of the previous year, where hate-to-love was my most-read genre. These were followed by boss/employee, opposites attract, and age gap tropes.
outside of numbers, i'm quite happy with what i read this year and i definitely read more indulgently. my highlights were no one is talking about this by patricia lockwood (a book that broke my heart!), thirsty by mia hopkins, release by suzanne clay, rules of arrangement by maren mackenzie, and things we never got over by lucy score.
next year i'm going to set myself goals, again, to read more widely - both in terms of genre, type, and format - but i'm going to make them slightly smaller and more realistic. it's hard to deny my reading habits have shifted so much over the last couple of years; i'm a romance reader through and through and generally i'm very happy and comfortable with that. still - it would be nice to broaden my horizons a little!
so, below is a full list of the books i read in 2022. rereads are italicised, and 5-star reads are bolded.

Neighbors, a local news station in San Diego interviewed Aaron Brink, the father of Anderson Aldrich and the suspect in the Colorado Springs LGBTQ+ nightclub shooting. That claimed the lives of Kelly Loving, Daniel Aston, Derrick Rump, Ashley Paugh and Raymond Green Vance.
___________________________________________
In a bizarre interview with CBS 8 News, Aaron Brink reveals his relationship with his son, also that he was a former pornstar, and he feels like his son was disgraced by his career choice.
___________________________________________
Brink also says his ex-wife called him from Colorado in 2016 to tell him their son, Nicholas Brink, had changed his name to Anderson Aldrich, and had killed himself. “His mother told me he changed his name because I was in Intervention and I had been a porno actor,” said Brink.
___________________________________________
For six years he thought his son was dead until his son called him last year, arguing with him over the phone. Brink said he's a Mormon. His first reaction was to question why his son was at a gay bar. When his son's lawyers called him to inform him about the shooting. “You know Mormons don't do gay. We don't do gay. There's no gays in the Mormon church. We don't do gay,” Brink said.
___________________________________________
As he learned more details of the deadly shooting, he said he was shocked.
“There's no excuse for going and killing people. If you're killing people, there's something wrong. It's not the answer.”

Prayers to all the victims and their loved ones. 🙏🏾🕊️ Neighbors, what are your thoughts?
