As a big sibling with a lil sib with epilepsy, when they read TBC they Honestly thought if they got struck with lightning reciting the lord's prayer they'd be cured like Shadowsight is from their epilepsy. I had a discussion with them on how that's not how it works, but ge was so upset they took it away from Shadowsight that he hasn't picked the books back up and has stated that 'he hopes Ashfur wins and starts a new religion.,'

I know Alot of people agree that Alastor had an Abusive father and a loving mother. But what about Vox. What's your headcanon for his childhood parents.

In my headcanon they Abandoned him either as a baby or as a child. Hence why he has major abandonment issues

I was definitely gonna say Vox probably didn't have parents or something along that sort. Poor baby, I'm thinking like I need to look into when he was born again but considering he comes from an old time period imagine it being something like neglect. Parents were too busy to actually play and be around him and if that was the case I can also see Vox being sent to different relatives so they could deal with him. Hm imagine this as well, Vox was abandoned because of something with his face.

I've heard people say that his form contributed to how he died but consider it being something else like Vox was born with some sort of deformity, he grew up quite alone because of it.. grew a deep bond with TV because it gave him comfort like those kids that sit cross legged super close to the TV and they can't seem to pull away, something like that.

He got into the wrong crowd, seen some things and became a product of his environment which is probably why he'd later lead himself into working with Valentino because old habits can and do die hard.

I can totally roll with the idea of him being abandoned from a young age, like in reality it had nothing to do with Vox but he was made into believing so. I feel like if that's somewhat the case not only does it explain him working as he does in Hell, why he has those abandonment issues, and why in the face of the public he's more than willing to put on a fake smile and act like it's all okay.

Most people in Hell are dumb so he's not worried about it.

I think I mentioned this in another post but in case I haven't Vox we have now is really just a shell of the old Vox we had before.

i think honestly what irritates me about yoshidas work SO much is that people will tell you that banana fish is THE gay manga (ignoring the many things that came before it and were more groundbreaking, ie MW literally having on screen (or like. on panel but still.) gay sex in it and that came out like a decade before BF did) when there really isn't barely any gay rep outside of the pedophiles and the one time ash drops the f slur. like im sorry but somehow yasha, a work she wrote in 1996, has more gay rep in it but also has the same issues.

i truly do not get how people can enjoy banana fish with the rampant racism every 2 pages or the rampant sexual assault plotlines (on women and ash bc he is just... written like how yoshida writes women lmao) that are handled IMPOSSIBLY bad and sincerely i hoped yasha would be better because it had been like a decade or so between works. and then it proceeds to continue with the heres our blonde genius protagonist who everyone is weird as fuck to and will sexually harrass and everyone finds it a VERY funny joke to point out how feminine he is when theres barely any women in the work (if you exclude the ones that are being raped/killed/creepy to minors. which to be fair yasha has toned down the sa a LOT) and that its funny that hes kind of gay except not really!! and its just absurd to me how it just persists in all of her stuff because she is not an author that handles gay stuff well. like the scene in banana fish where ash is completely ok getting gang raped and did it solely to get into the hospital when its been SHOWN that he has a lot of trauma with that. and then right after his friend makes a joke at ash's expense about that. like sincerely and genuinely is this what we are hyping up as the old retro gay manga. go read some tezuka and stop reading shit that the most the main characters do is share a kiss in a nonromantic sense and is obsessed w making every gay person be evil!!

Can you share even a little spoiler about Ash Navi? I can't help but wonder if Trr'ong is the only human in the clan? And where do they get exopacks for him? Oh and does his name have a deeper translation? Of course, I understand if you prefer not to share it for now haha

Ash Na'vi lore *Slight Spoiler*

As opposed to the norm of the typical Na'vi, my Ash Na'vi do not have a single shred of belief in Eywa. Constant years of hardship have cultivated a distance between the Ash People and the Great Mother. Rather, they refuse to believe she is more than just an idea that the others parade in their faces. While this is known by most other clans, it is uncertain just what exaclty they derive their beliefs (or non-belief) from, only that they have thrown away the love the Great Mother wished to dispose onto them when she first created them. The Metka'yina especially play with the idea that they worship fire b/c they are drawn to it; a torrent of fire is a personification of the pain and suffering the entire clan itself can bring.

They do however, believe in something called "Kelku te Tsawke", or "House of the Sun". I will be delving into this much further and with more details in a separate post, but for now, think of it as essentially being a form of Valhalla.

Spider/Trr'ong Lore

Spider is indeed the first, and only, skyperson to ever wander into the hands of the Ash Na'vi. Believe it or not, this doesn't mean they do not know humans exist, or of their differences to Na'vi. But since his arrival, all the Ash Na'vi have pushed themselves to become familiar with Spider's uniquq attributes and characteristics. They do so to ensure he is comfortable and never in any danger on the alien planet. Some, like Trr'ong's siblings and young children, personally love his extra finger and toe.

There is actually a deeper story to how Trr'ong was able to survive amongst the Ash Na'vi, given his limitations. It involves a much deeper history between the isle that the Ash People reside on, and even involves the RDA. I've actually been working on a special interlude chapter and post that dives into this. It is called "Project Vesuvius", so be on the lookout for that!

In the Na'vi dialect, "trr'ong" means "dawn/sunrise". And yes, there is a much deeper reason behind the name choice than just it sounding nice. The sunrise symbolizes many things, such as birth, resurrection, and the new begininning of all kinds. It is not just the name of an Ash Na'vi. It is the new ending for "Spider", and a new beginning for "Trr'ong". Both of them being the same person, yet having completely different lives. For me, this was a new opportunity at life for him.

Which other characters do you feel have been most misrepresented or poorly localised apart from Rock/Romeo?

most of the characters would be localized differently if DS/cute had been localized by xseed hmmm

(a lot of bachelorette heart events exclusive to the boy version are probably worse, given that the boy version can get downright incomprehensible more often than the girl version, but i’m not going through the hell of restarting the english version of DS for yet another time given that it’s Save File Corruption Speedrunner)

i need to preface this by saying i’m only trying to call this an Interesting and Unfortunate Change but….

one big example that comes to mind is Ain / Kai and his “too touchy-feely?” first heart event….. is not about that in japanese and since it’s not quite equivalent it gets a real sense of unintentional Bad in english

in the japanese version of the event, Ain brings up the fact that he just calls you your name, without the honorific -san. omitting that definitely makes him come off as overfamiliar (whole ass trope about new couples getting flustered over being called their first name with no honorific for the first time), but Ain is Not From Here and overall speaks in the casual, friendly way he’s used to.

he asks you if you’re uncomfortable with him using your name like that

obviously the correct choice is to say you don’t mind at all and everything is fine. BUT if you tell him it’s too much…. he apologizes and tries saying your name with -san… but he realizes he just can’t do it, because “after all, aya is just aya (or whatever your name is). which is kinda weird, but it would require all his normal dialogue lines to be rewritten, so i guess we need to return to the status quo…whatever…

obviously this presents a conundrum in the english version, since honorific speech isn’t used in english the same way it is in japanese. so the event has to be about something slightly different…

the solution natume came up with was to have it be about him patting you on the back

you can probably already see the problem with this but let’s look at it anyway

Of course!!!! It’s funny because I originally watched the series five ish years ago now and despite really loving it, I didn’t really remember much lol I only decided to rewatch it this past year because I was visiting NYC and I wanted to watch movies/tv that took place there to get hype so I revisited it and it was WAY better than I remembered it was really like watching it for the first time again since I forgot the second half of the story.

Anyway, I enjoyed it so much I went to read the manga which I loved even more since I’m big into eighties culture and music. When I get fixated on things I really wanna dig up anything I can find, which I had a tough time doing for Banana Fish since even today with the anime and its spike in popularity in 2021 many fans didn’t stick around long or dig into the source so there wasn’t people digging up lost art or anything plus the age of the series and that it’s Japanese makes it even harder. So I try my best, thank you!

Alejandra would meet Robert (and Charles probably) in a tavern. She would look Robert up and down and say, "I win." Robert: "Win what" 4 hours later, Robert staggers away flustered (he had to quit because charles was like "STOPPP I AINT ABOUTTA DRAG YOU TO BED SWEETHEART 😭😭😭") and Alejandra can boast that she's won a drinking content against a Slavic man. But then the next morning Robert demands a rematch because he would have kept going if it weren't for karol.... now we have an ordeal.

Tbh I don't see much interaction between Teela and Robert. I feel like he'd stay away from her and miss out on great Teela stuff. :(

Billy

Billy and Theo. Theo does all he can to try to make Billy a better person, and I feel like he’d actually have patience with him. Wait till he sees what Billy’s doing in the 1880s ❤️ He’d be proud of that little gunslinger

Clarence and Billy—at first, Billy is WAY too energetic and brash. Clarence gets fed up about Billy’s talking about the war. Billy gets fed up with Clarence being so non-compliant when talking about anything he doesn’t like. But eventually they do find out they’ve got some stuff in common. Like the whole “my parents left me” thing,,, (except I think Clarence would point out that technically, in Billy’s situation, Billy wasn’t voluntarily abandoned by HIS living parent)

As mentioned previously, Billy would be scared of Grandma Teela 🥲 He doesn’t know any women and has behaved badly around the crushes he’s had in the past. So maybe Teela could teach him a lesson. No seriously. Before Ernie can get to him, Billy has no concept of respect unless it’s when you have to be to the Confederate officers who want to know what information you’ve gathered.

Billy’s scared of Grandma Teela, but when he meets Alejandra… “WAS MY MOTHER LIKE THIS???” he wonders out loud to Ernie seeing Alejandra being the badass she is. Even in the 1880s Billy’d still be jealous of how great of a shot she is

Omg Ernie and Alekshashka 💀 talk about disappointment from Sasha “THIS is one of the brigade commanders??? Good skill, bad leadership.” Ernie just nodding in agreement because he has no idea how he even got promoted to full brigadier general in the first place (he was sort of pressured into it by a friend who had political ties). Both can be horsegirls together though (and Billy when he eventually gets over his equinophobia)

Clarence and Ernie understand each other. Amputees 💪 also since they want to put the war behind them. I feel like the two of them would go on a camping trip and roast marshmallows over a fire and talk about life.

Alfred meeting Ernie: “um do you need prayer” Ernie: “yes please 🥲” tbh the two would go out for coffee every Saturday morning and share a plate of butter croissants

Alejandra about to leave Ernie in the dust lol. They’d be riding along and next thing Ernie knows, she’s already 20 yards ahead of him (especially if they’re racing…). I think he’d admire her a lot, and Alejandra would still be disappointed at his performance during the Civil War

Between the three is so hard to answer. I tend to drift more towards one of the other depending but maybe I do enjoy Lucifer the most. (Vox close second)

I think it's because I relate to him on though fact that maybe he loved the wrong people too hard and got fucked over. But then again I really enjoy Lucifer's personality from the "TAKE THAT DEPRESSION!" to the moment when he was so angry with Adam that he calmed down considerably after Charlie reached out to him. Like maybe because of his story in Hazbin plus his mythos I've been able to really cling to his character for comfort. I do the same with Alastor and Vox but sometimes I really feed into their angst more than anything else.

Like in my mind Lucifer really did nothing wrong but love others who didn't deserve his love and so really I feel like out of the three I adore him the most because I relate with him there but in order for me it's Luci, Vox, and Alastor though it's so close that there's definitely not a race lol.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE:

For love languages I feel like they have multiple but Lucifer's is words of affirmation, Vox's is acts of service and Alastor's is definitely quality time.

Bonus points for physical touch when it comes to Vox and Lucifer.
