Now you can also do this maliciously:
In this case, no cereal is going to have asbestos, but they make it a marketing tactic. Obviously it’s rarely this extreme but you get the idea.
obviously im of the belief that labelling food abd the ingredients it contains as clearly as possible is really good practice, and i highly approve of it
but the specific sense of comedy thats invoked in you when you look at a dish that is almost entirely a certain ingredient and theres a little sign next to it that reads “THIS ITEM CONTAINS [INGREDIENT]” is something that cannot be ignored

because it's stating the obvious. it's like labelling breakfast cereal as "asbestos-free". of course her dress is nice. everyone's dress is nice. dresses are just generally nice. that's the default thing for dresses to be. so it's sus that you're specifically pointing it out.
Compliments aren’t about being obvious or subtle, they’re about saying something nice to someone to make them happy.
I’ve complimented people on clothes I’ve found absolutely butt ugly bc I think kindness shouldn’t be limited to people who I find aesthetically pleasing.
If you think being nice to someone is “sus” then I suggest you do some deep soul searching and figure out why you’re such a miserable suspicious person who sees negativity in objectively positive actions.

My thoughts about Cara:
Cara's whole marketing strategy seems to be based on its commitment to no generative AI art, which is basically the "Asbestos Free Cereal" strategy; the weirdest thing is that we live in a world where cereal companies have actually been adding asbestos to their cereal, so there's that.
But the thing is, Cara does not offer things that other social networks don't offer. Chronological timelines are still a staple of both Tumblr and Mastodon (or anywhere else in the Fediverse), which give me the same vibes as using "no AI" as your selling point; you're basically just advertising yourself as "not the worst thing".
I don't think the hype will pay off, especially for comic artists, considering that it is a social network made for artists so... it will be a way for artists to share their art with other artists? That... seems counter-productive, somehow.

honestly I think dnis are devolving into an absurd asbestos-free cereal racket, ie 'if I don't include x group on my dni then everyone will think I'm a supporter of x group!'
and since there will never be an end to groups one doesn't wish to interact with (even if you only count the genuinely objectionable ones) it's essentially a long performative game that nobody is ever going to win but plenty will lose
pretty much

One thing I've noticed is that anyone who says they don't like toxic fandom is almost certainly a major source of toxicity themselves
Like, no-one likes toxic fandoms. It's the default position. It's kind of like if a cereal was advertising itself as 'asbestos-free'. Why do you feel the need to state that?

The Hidden Rules of Conversation
Gricean Maxims are a vital part of how we understand each other: a set of... well, maybe "rules" is a bit strong. They're guidelines that we follow without realising it. And it's the reason that "asbestos-free cereal" sounds suspicious.
My latest collab video with Tom Scott and Molly Ruhl is up, and it’s about Gricean Maxims!
