also i know what it's like to think a story is leaning one way but be so worried you're reading it wrong because you also know in your heart of hearts how badly you want it to be leaning that way, so from someone who is far more 'comparatively impartial' - ruthari is going to get their happy ending, man. 100%
#ruthari#like i know it feels so long bc of the length of time between seasons#but like s2 is literally the only season that hasn't furthered the coin plot at all#runaan getting out of the coins (and being happy) is now tied to both callum AND ezran's development#as well as rayla's so the whole trio is there#kpp'ar has plot relevant information about aaravos & they're all coined together for a reason#hell runaan is the first character we see even know who aaravos iS#like. it's happening. they're all getting out. they're all gonna be a part of the show#it's Clear As Day

inspired by a single line from @raayllum's the purpose of a knight
It's only a cold, claims Opeli. Nothing she can't handle, nothing she hasn't worked through in the past, and to her credit, she had looked mostly fine. Soren will give her that much. He'd only noticed to begin with because he's grown so used to her. Callum and Ezran and Rayla don't--they're their own little trio, caught up too often in each other's dramas and emotions that they forget, sometimes, to take in the drama around them. In any case, it's not like Opeli has made it easy: she's been very good at making everything around them look and feel fine, and, for some reason, is insistent that this is her job and her job alone. She doesn't take breaks, and she's obviously doing too much, and she refuses help too often, so of course this was going to happen, and well.
This is how Soren finds himself tending to her in her chambers while she fights off a fever that has her shivering in the summer heat.
"I don't think this is a cold, Opeli."
She grimaces and has the grace not to deny it. "I think you may be right," she grumbles. The way she pouts about it would be funny if she weren't huddled sadly under her sheets. "My apologies."
Soren raises an eyebrow at her. "For being wrong?"
"For being sick," she corrects. She shifts guiltily under the covers and accepts the cup of tea that he hands her--lemon, honey, and a little ginger for her sinuses, cooked up specifically for her by Barius who's been all but pestering her to just sit down for weeks. "I've left you all in a lurch, and there's so much to do."
Soren makes a face at her. "Are you being serious right now?"
She makes one back. "I'm certainly not joking," she grumbles, although whatever indignance she meant is lost when she sneezes and almost spills her tea. "Ugh, excuse me. What poor timing, I'm so sorry."
Soren presses his lips together, borderline offended that she thinks anyone would care about the work more than her health. "Stop that," he scolds. "Sources, Opeli, no one blames you for being sick. You work harder than anyone else in the castle, it's amazing you're not sick more often!"
She smirks weakly over her tea and sits up a little straighter, wincing the whole way. "Just unlucky this year, I suppose. Regardless, I'll be fine. Let Ezran know I'll be back tomorrow. I just need the day."
"Um. No." Soren crosses his arms over his chest and frowns, which is an odd and kind of funny role reversal: usually she is the one being disapproving of his shenanigans. "You're going to stay in bed until your fever breaks, and then you're going to take the rest of the week off to rest."
Opeli gives him a look. "Are you a physician now?"
"I'm Ezran's Crownguard, and my duty is to the Crown."
She snorts at him. "I am decidedly not the Crown, Soren."
"No, but Ezran is, and if you make him sick with whatever the hell you've got, I'll have you kicked off the council."
There's a pause. Opeli makes a face so shocked and so scandalized that Soren has to bite back the laugh rising in his throat. He smirks at her, victorious, and waits, daring her to argue against the health and safety of her King.
"I won't let you harm the Crown, Opeli," he lilts, enjoying her frustration maybe a little too much.
"I would never," snaps Opeli.
"Then rest," says Soren, uncrossing his arms to push her back into bed by the shoulders. "Please. I am begging you to just--let yourself recover, and if you're going to refuse to do it for yourself, then do it for Ez. I'm not above accusing of treason if you don't. I mean it."
"But--"
"I mean it." (He doesn't, and she knows this, but the point still stands).
Opeli scowls and slurps at her tea, frustrated but defeated all the same. "Does it have to be the whole week?"
"It has to be the whole week," says Soren decisively. "I'll come and check on you personally and bring you your tea and stuff just to make sure. You and Zubeia, Moon and Stars..." He shakes his head. "Just, like." He huffs. "You work too hard. You gotta let us look after you too. Okay?"
He expects her to be furious about it. He half expects her to get out of bed and accuse him of treason or something--but in the end, Opeli ducks her head over her tea and sighs.
"Fine," she mutters. "One week."
"One week." Soren tilts his lips upwards at last and pats her shoulder for good measure. "I'll check back in in a bit, yeah?"
"Okay." Opeli grumbles a little bit more over her tea, but she doesn't protest, and when Soren turns to go, she sighs. "Thank you," she says, resigned. "I appreciate the effort."
Soren grins. "Any time," he says. (He does mean that, and he knows she knows it).
#in anticipation#soren&opeli brotp#sorpeli#sorry not sorry#also yeah opeli my girl sit the fuck down and rest for like one second

Hm, I agree partially, but not sure how much. Maybe I’ll figure it out while I dump my brain here.
I think the setup of a story should do two things: introduce the characters, confront them with their (first) quest. A season is a “setup season” if it takes the whole season to do that.
Season 1 does this within a few episodes for the main trio (quest: bring the egg to Xadia) and Viren (quest: figure out mirror, get throne). It takes longer with Soren and Claudia (their real struggles imo only start in season 2) while the main Amaya arc takes even longer to get started, and this staggered approach works very well. Season 1 is thus not a setup season, but just contains some setup episodes.
And season 2 does it within a few episodes as well: Both the heroes and the villains start travelling to Rex (comparable to the first part of the egg journey), and everything after the start of this journey is no setup any more. You could even argue that the Claudia quest already starts with climbing the Storm Spire.
(only in the case of the Janaya arc the whole season consists of a setup for ... we’ll see)
So because in my eyes season 4 is not a setup season, that can’t be the problem. (why would you need a whole season for that anyway when we already know 90% of the characters?)
The problems of season 4 are different. I think for me it’s mainly:
1) The plot is often contrived, e.g. it feels like the heroes go on their journey not because it makes sense, but because the plot needs them to. Because, well, they are the protagonists. Bad for immersion.
2) Not enough dialogue and character development. In seasons 1-3 Callum, Rayla and Ezran were constantly talking and arguing with each other, had internal struggles or were confronted with other characters, which contributed to their own or others’ development. In season 4 ... less so. The villains are okay, the heroes barely talk at all? I wouldn’t be surprised if the wordcount of Callum, Ezran and Rayla in season 1 is five times as high as in season 4. Or am I imagining things here? Of course that’s partially due to the bigger role of Janaya and the villains, but there are a lot of things that could have been cut to squeeze some important dialogue like the Viren-Soren confrontation in.
I’ve been seeing a lot of people defending S4’s faults on the grounds that it is just “setup” for future seasons, and honestly I can’t disagree more.
I don’t think s4 is a setup season because it actively prevents certain plotlines from developing.
This probably deserves and entire meta of its own, but here’s an example of what I mean: at the beginning of the season, we see Callum in the role of High Mage with some pretty explicit parallels to Viren. The rest of the episode shows that these parallels aren’t superficial: while Callum may be kind and generous, we see that he is also very aggressive and intimidating, even to the point of violence (sorry Soren). He’s also very curious, to an obsessive degree, about magic in general and the mirror in particular.
Then, Callum is given a translation tome from his aunt, and figures out what the runes around the mirror mean. Things start to come together as they did with Viren, Callum is piecing the mystery together and is on the verge of—
—and then Rayla shows up and this plotline ends. Callum never had a chance to unravel the mystery because Zubeia just solves it for him and Callum quickly figured out the guy on the other side is bad news.
This right here is an example of what is known as plotblocking. The show actively prevents the narrative from moving along either to pad out the run time or stall character development. By definition, it’s the opposite of a setup.

Strangled Ties
Poly!Runaan X Ethari X Reader — if you don't like, then don't read.
You sit cross legged in front of the fire, hands curled around the warm mug—worry clouding your mind. A part of you is unsure of Runaan, worried for Rayla, and nervous as you glance over at Ethari. He is hunched over his work bench; yet, as soon as he sees you look away from his peripheral—Ethari glances at you. A silent plead that you're okay. Then he gets back to his own work and you go back to staring at the fire, you used to joke to Runaan that the fire danced. But it doesn't dance, it strikes a cold fear to your blood—runs cold and chills the air, all while making you warmer than you've ever been. That's how you'd describe your relationship with Ethari when Runaan left for these missions, weeks would go by and you'd barely say a word. Both too quiet to break the silence, and too worried about Runaan to ever part.
Runaan was always the connection between you both, and it was him that suggested bringing you into their marriage. Who asked you to stay. But with Ethari, he was damn near impossible to get close to. Always stuck at arms length when it came to him, not that you held him any closer at first. Close, but never close enough to hurt if the other was hurting. That was when Runaan approached Ethari with the unexpected, he had fallen for you. Not on purpose, and not all at once, but slowly over time. Not like he woke up and knew that he needed you too, in his arms and bed, and with him. It had started with archery, and then you teaching him how to cook and bake.
At first, Ethari had wanted to say no and he did, explaining his reasoning to his husband who simply nodded and remained your friend. However, friends can't love friends forever—at some point, there is a threshold and there's no going back. You went to Ethari, whose eyes widened with shock at your confession. You explained that you had no intention of ever acting on your feelings and that you planned to leave as soon as possible. You wanted him to know that you weren't the bad guy, because you admired Ethari. You were open and honest about your feelings, and that you never intentionally meant to make Ethari uncomfortable. He simply nodded, never saying a word—you were kind with his heart, and gracious with your admittance. So Ethari, with great hesitance, told Runaan that night that he had his blessing. That he too would try. It was by far one of the hardest decisions he made, but now, looking back—Ethari would make that choice again and again. He appreciates you more than he ever intended to.
That was the day Ethari realized his biggest mistake was thinking you were out to take Runaan away, and when he smiled at you when you showed up the next afternoon, your heart skipped a beat.
Ethari shuts his book roughly and looks at you: "If you are going to continue to stare, you might as well come sit with me." You hadn't even realized you were staring until he said something, but then again, you stared at him a lot. You wondered if he knew that too. Maybe it meant something. Runaan seemed to think so, he mentioned it time and time again when Ethari vented about how you barely paid him any mind. "They stare at you like you are the sun and stars." Runaan was never wrong.
He was the glue of it all, the whole dynamic—he would hold you both close, resting a hand on Ethari's back and your palm folded into his other hand. He was proud to love you both, in public and in private. But you and Ethari were never physical with each other. You shared small smiles and brief comforting glances, but the kind of moments that no one outside of the trio would notice. You would bake his favorite pastries and leave them at his work desk. He would build your kitchen to work seamlessly, designing features you never even considered possible. You kissed his shoulder in comfort, just like you did Runaan before leaving rooms. He would watch your hands closely for any sign of discomfort, knowing you hated attention. Especially unwanted attention.
It wasn't that you didn't care for one another, it was the fact that you never needed to be closer than that. He would hear something broken, or you'd break something accidentally, but you'd wake up to it fixed. He was just good at those things, at knowing. Neither of you were quick to initiate things, but too stubborn to not fall in love. Quietly, because for you both, Runaan always knew. But now he's gone.
You were just two elves stuck in Xadia, while Runaan was a realm away. Just two elves unsure if they even know how to love each other.
Slowly, painfully out rise to your feet and walk towards him, steps short and hesitant. Palms still wrapped around the mug: "I just-" You whisper, but don't finish as you take a seat next to him. He just smiles sadly, he's always been like this so calm and collected.
"I know." You lean your head on his shoulder as he continues to work, a wordless agreement to be there for each other. A silence that he does not break for two long minutes, your eyes shut as you listen to the quiet nuances of him working. "I resented you for letting Runaan love you." You wanted to be shocked at the sudden admission, but you knew all along—you knew from the day you visited for the first time that Ethari was angry with you. His longtime husband wanted more or at least that's how it seemed, and you happened to be that. "But you brought balance to our relationship. You didn't take anything away, only brought more." His words are tentative at first, which makes you more nervous, but he is easily calm. He seem like he has put a lot of thought into it and he probably has— that's Ethari for you. His brain never shuts off, it just goes until he lets it out or until he can't think about it anymore.
"You are just as adventurous as Runaan, but as calm as I am. Good to have when things get tough." He hums and you scoot closer, just listening to his words as they warm you. He is able to warm you with only his voice, soft dulcet tones that are not meant to hurt. "You have been kind to me." Ethari finally brings himself to look at you, he is soft and kind—his smile drifting off, which causes your eyebrows to furrow. "Much kinder than I have been to you." To hear him say it... It puts a lot into perspective because you had tried so hard to not let it get to you. Argue that he could care less about you, even when Runaan argued otherwise. That was the only time you and Runaan ever argued.
"But in these last months, I realized something very real— that in the years since you joined us... I have fallen in love with you." Your eyes widen, die he mean it? Could Ethari have loved you? Your mouth opens and you place the mug on the table; sometimes, you wondered. You thought maybe, but to hear it means something else entirely. You go to speak, but he raises his hand and you go quiet. Ethari embraces your hands, one would think that his hands would be rough, but they're not. They're just as soft as his gaze, his eyes hold no judgement. No condemnation. "Let me finish."
You nod. "I don't need you to love me back, because I can't ask that of you." He pauses, "But I do need you here." His eyes have misted over. "With Runaan gone. I thought I needed my partner, but I want you both. I need you both." Have a little faith, given a little time, it has finally reached this point. Got you both here. "When I think about it— I've loved you for quite sometime, but now—" He smiles, kind and sad. But genuine. "Now I know." You hesitate, your heart beating faster than your mind can process. So you kiss him. You don't have to think about that because you like kissing him. So when he kisses back. You let the warmth wash over you.
To not be alone is the best feeling—you both missing him, being enough to bring you together.
Keep in mind, this is not meant to be a 100% realistic approach to a Poly relationship. This is fiction.

Season 4 Thoughts: Ray Edition
First of all, a disclaimer: all of these might change after I watch the season a second time, it usually takes me going episode-by-episode with full context to form a full opinion. That being said, right now, my feelings on the season are mixed. I definitely think it’s my least favorite of what we’ve gotten so far (not that it’s bad! Just less good). I’ll get into that, but I want to start off by talking about what I liked:
The animation was breathtaking. Everything was so smooth, I loved pretty much all of the character redesigns, and the scenery was gorgeous
I loved that conflict between the humans and elves didn’t end with returning to Zym to his mother, and I loved how that was explored. The show continued on with doing what it does extremely well: making sure that the conflict is never black-and-white. I always thought that both sides had valid points
(Also: Ezran’s speech deserves a point of its own because that was fantastic. You could hear his anger and pain so well as he was talking about it and his conclusion that you have to hold all your emotions to move forward was so wise. Plus it being juxtaposed by the fight with Ibis... incredible)
Janai and Amaya. Their dynamic was so wonderful and sweet and you can really see how they bring out the best in each other. They had better get married and be the best queens the sunfire elves have ever known
Terry, as a character, is fantastic. He’s so sweet and devoted, the way he sees the world is fascinating, and his reaction to killing Ibis and journey with how he dealt with it was very compelling
The whole villain (?) trio was great actually, they still all have very believable flaws and are still likable despite their actions (although Claudia less so than she has been)
TERRY CONVINCING CLAUDIA TO RETURN THE COINS. First of all, because it means neither of them are beyond hope, but mostly because we’re FINALLY GETTING SOME CLOSURE ON THAT PLOT POINT RUTHARI REUNION WHEN
Bait was a little champion. His bond with Ezran in previous seasons was cute, but I adored seeing how connected he was with Callum. And the fact that he was the final push to open Rex Igneous’s door. 10/10
Ezran subverting the whole “we will sacrifice our treasured possessions to you” trope by realizing their gifts to Rex should mean something to him. I love that it was a baked good that got him to talk. Honestly, same
But with that being said, the whole season kind of felt... off, especially in the beginning. It really took a while for the tone to find its footing. The humor felt really jarring at first, and it really switched from super dark to super light very quickly (for example, two minutes of bathroom jokes and a guy coughing up blood as he dies in the same episode). I also wasn’t really a big fan of Rayla’s plotline. First of all, her disappearance was never really explained- it pretty much alienated anyone who hasn’t read TTM, and I’m sure a lot of viewers haven’t. And the way it threw off the group dynamic wasn’t fun for me. I loved the show primarily because even though there was conflict between the characters, they still bantered and fought for each other and there were tons of moments where you saw how much they cared about each other, and that was missing here. I liked that Callum didn’t forgive Rayla right away, but I really do wish he’d at least gotten a chance to explain why her leaving hurt him and have them air that out a bit, because she really didn’t seem to get it. The fact that she never apologized or acknowledged that leaving him with absolutely no word for two years would hurt... I’m so sure she’s smarter than that. I’m hopeful that season 5 will go into Rayla’s disappearance in more detail and kind of negate this critique, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Overall, I enjoyed the season, and I think I will even more once I watch it again! It just took a while to find its footing, and I do think I liked arc 1 better so far

why rayllum is a MASTERPIECE part 3
*RUBS MY CLAWS TOGETHER* IT IS SEASON 3 TIME BITCHES AND H O L Y S H I T I LOVE THIS SEASON SO MUCH
i even rewatched it for this!
this time i’ll try to have SOME order, and go by episode. this will however still include unintelligible screaming
1. DAMN THESE FUCKERS BE PINING MORE THAN A PINE TREE FOREST!
first off, affectionate eye rolling, nose boop, and head bonk is the best thing.
second, IF SOMEONE SAYS THAT DURING WHEN CALLUM WAS HELPING RAYLA PUT ON HIS SCARF AND THEY J STARED AT EACHOTHER FOR A BIT BEFORE RAYLA TURNED AWAY THAT HE WAS N O T LOST IN HER EYES? they’re wrong. this is fact now.
third, their teamwork and decision making is excellent. they agree to try and sneak past sol regem, and when that fails try talking to him and then decide to simply trick his senses with the scarf. and instead of rayla shooting down callum’s “smelltriloquism” idea, she simply adds onto it! LOVE HEALTHY FRIENDSHIPS
“i think it’s good luck!” YES IT IS RAY THAT’S UR BOYFRIENDS SCARF
also, here you go. you’re welcome.
2. STILL PINING. GOD DAMN.
first, CALLUM BEING SO EXCITED BY ALL THE MAGIC IN XADIA IS S O CUTE! MY SON. this might turn into an overrall review of s3. o well
second. FLUSTERED RAYLA AND FLUSTERED CALLUM. Y E S
third, THE ADORABURR FIELD! their smiles were so fond and soft and A. they make me cry of joy.
an overall look on it, i like how this episode really shows their feelings clearly. no “will they won’t they”, at least for rayla. it’s clear she has feelings.
3. AH FUCK. ANGST.
first i love how when rayla mentions that she’s excited and happy but also terrified, callum tries to comfort her. good boi. best boi.
second, elf callum. i love that scene so much even if the second-hand embarrassment kills me, and rayla is j like “why the fuck do i love you. im gonna kill him.”
third, DANCE! callum not being rude and saying her home is “modest” before rayla explains it’s an illusion, his BLUSH WHEN SHE HELPS HIM, and the softness in general. rayla’s excitement that she’s home and talks abt that she can show callum where she went to school, the best moonberry surprise place, until...
fourth, AH FUCK. A N G S T T I M E. rayla being crest-fallen before callum says that it must’ve been a mistake, and she realizes that ethari would probably understand!
and then CONFIRMED GAYS. YES.
rayla realizing ethari ghosted her too and then callum GOING O F F. he angy and when rayla runs out callum IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWS (like in a later episode) and comforts her again.
when ethari comes down and breaks the spell and says to callum “trees to meet you too” and rayla’s like “don’t encourage him”
also callum trying to get on the shadowpaw and ethari being Concerned is AMAZING. concerned dad content
i’ll talk more about ezran/ruthari/the dark magic trio in a later ted talk
4. H E R E W E G O
first, rayla clearly being sad and callum picking up on that quickly (he even seems to be almost falling on purpose, perhaps to make her smile?) and asking if she’s ok before being shot down by rayla insisting she is fine. GOD DAMN. THAT HURTS.
second, their interaction with nyx is so amazing. rayla being protective of zym and callum being a DORK is awesome, but also their decision making.
after rayla reluctantly decides that they can go see how nyx could get them across the desert so quickly, they see the ambler and then their reasoning is amazing.
“what do you think?”
“the dragon queen is dying.” and then i forget the rest of the exact quote but they give a subtle nod to eachother. they make their decisions TOGETHER. AS A TEAM. AND THAT’S ON HEALTHY FRIENDSHIPS X2!
third, callum continuing to gently press for rayla to express her emotions. he doesn’t pressure her, but seems to simply let her know that if she needs to talk (when she insists she’s fine), he is there.
four, MORE FLUSTERED RAYLLUM. YES. TY NYX but also fuck u for taking zym but also ur hot- A N Y W A Y
five. OOOOOOH. MY FAVORITE SCENE.
rayla’s crying and callum tries to reassure her. nyx is plotting, while rayla runs away and callum follows. Y E S.
rayla talks about how there’s nobody left that cares about her and she lost everything.. and then the SPEECH. i have this speech memorized i’ve watched this scene so many times
"JUST SHUT UP, YOU'RE TALKING CRAZY. JUST, LISTEN TO ME. YOU'RE TOO GOOD TO FEEL THIS BAD ABOUT YOURSELF. I KNOW THAT, AND YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT. YOU HAVE TRUE COURAGE, AND A BIG HEART! I'VE SEEN YOU GET KNOCKED DOWN SO MANY TIMES AND EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. YOU GET UP AGAIN. THAT'S REAL STRENGTH. AND.. AND YOU'RE TEN TIMES FUNNIER THAN ANY HUMAN I KNOW! chuckle SEE? SEE YOU KNOW YOU'RE AMAZING. YOU'RE SMART AND FAST AND BEAUTIFUL. RAYLA YOU'RE THE MOST AMAZING PERSON I'VE EVER MET."
LOVE THEMMM
and then rayla kisses him and that’s all that happened. callum was not a dumbass. right? RIGHT???
5. MY FAVORITE EPISODE!
first, rayla saving callum from the soulfang serpents and callum helping her get up is AMAZING, LOVE THAT.
second, callum tryna get a good position and rayla j saying to hold onto her and callum GETTING FLUSTERED. BOY IS PINING also he didn’t have to hold her that close.
“I DON’T THINK OF HER THAT WAY” “YOU AND I DON’T HAVE THAT YET” LIAR.
three, THEM JUMPING OFF THE AMBLER AND. THAT WHOLE MOMENT? THE ROMANTIC TENSION IS KILLING ME
four. DAMN CALLUM RLLY DO BE HAVING HEART EYES @ RAYLA WHILE SHE KILLS LIKE 80 SOULFANGS HE IS PINING PART 2
five. THE SPEECH. THE SOFTNESS. THE KISSES. GOD DAMN. FAVORITE SCENE OUT OF THE ENTIRETY OF TDP. LOVE THEM.
also here you go again
what can i say except YOU’RE WELCOME
6. ANGST BUT ALSO FLUFF ALSO REUNION
once again won’t b talking abt ezran specifically but there’s some passing mentions of him from now on
first, rayla and callum reaching the stone thunder and callum asking “is it... a statue?” and rayla sadly saying “no. it’s not a statue” A. I CRI.
1.5 ayla and callum best dragon parents
i’ll get to an actual analysis later
second, THIS MOMENT IS UNDERRATED EVEN THO IT’S ONE OF MY FAVS why has nobody mentioned the lil tender moment where ezran is by phoe-phoe and rayla puts her hand on callum’s shoulder AND CALLUM PUTS HIS HAND ON HERS. SO SWEET.
third, OK I’LL STOP MOST OF MY UNINTELLIGIBLE SHRIEKS AND ACTUALLY ANALYZE THIS.
callum is upset because of thunder and rayla sympathizes immediately. this is similar to how callum lets rayla let out her own emotions, and rayla is doing the same. he explains how he feels angry, upset, confused, sad, and rayla quickly empathizes. he keeps on venting, not knowing whether to feel regretful, or glad, and how he’s confused because that’s sarai’s spear. he feels sorry that all this happened, but rayla reassures him that zym and ezran are going to break the cycle! that’s hope! and then they hold hands and i screech
AND THAT’S SO FUCKING HEALTHY AND I LOVE IT. THEY RLLY BREAK ALL BAD HET RELATIONSHIP STEREOTYPES (coughbutistillheadcanonthembothasbiandcallumistransilldieonthishillcough)
7. angst but not rayllum angst so its ok
first, they begin to go up the storm spire and i really love their banter. “and i’m guessing the dragon queen didn’t make her den at a nice, halfway kinda place?” “nope. tiptop!”
cuties.
second, ASSDHFNF THE FACT THEY M O C K THE IDEA OF A FORBIDDEN RELATIONSHIP. THEY’RE IN LOVE AND THE WORLD CAN DEAL WITH IT. LOVE THAT FOR THEM
third, RAYLA CATCHING CALLUM. IT’S. NOT RLLY BIG I JUST LIKE IT AND THINK IT’S CUTE HOW EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS ALSO OUT OF BREATH SHE RAN UP TO CATCH HIM.
four, AHSDHGDHFG THEY DEADASS FORGOT EZRAN WAS THERE. more flustered rayllum i love that
8. FUCK IT’S RAYLLUM ANGST NOOOO
one, ibis is j a good boi. back to rayla and callum
two, rayla going in to see the dragon queen and when she runs out callum QUICKLY FOLLOWS to see if she’s ok. asks her if she’s ok, and she OPENS UP!! CHARACTER GROWTH BABY!!! and then they hold hands and i once again shriek
three, AH. HELLO ANGST.
before we go to the actual angst, can i say that THE LAUGH AFTER RAYLA SAID “STORM SNEEZE” IS SO CUTE. CALLUMS IN LOVE. MY SON.
oh no.
*bonks rayla on the head* nO SELF SACRIFICING!!
although their fight is super angsty and i hate it, it does provide some conflict and more plot because it gives callum a reason to want to find out the truth about rayla’s parents. and then he does! people argue that this fight was unnecessary or that callum was a jerk, but this was needed i think. he did let his worry become a bit of anger, and that was not a nice move, but he knows he fucked up and fixes it!
and then we get soft rayllum this is fine
9. AND YOU THOUGHT LAST EPISODE WAS BAD N O *CRYING*
there’s not much rayllum featured in this ep, but the amount we do get is 80 PERCENT ANGST AND I WASN’T OK WITH IT
first, the fluff! callum trying to do the wing spell and rayla teasing “did you pull a muscle in the middle of a jumping jack?” is so cute. i LOVE THEM. also they hold hands and i SH RIEK again.
also soren how dare you interrupt callum he was abt to confess
second, callum when he’s explaining the battle plan and his ZAP HAND. rayla is j watching him like “yep. that is my dork.”

The Long Game ch. 3
“You called, Dad?” Claudia announced her presence. Viren turned to her, sighing as he faced away from the mirror he had gotten back in Xadia. He still hadn’t figured out it’s secrets, but he had seen a cloaked figure appear every once in a while.
“Yes, Claudia. We need to talk about relationships.”
“Oh.” Claudia blushed, putting a few strands of her dark hair behind her ear. “Did you hear about the girl at the bakery? I know it’s unorthodox, but-”
“You don’t have time to be worrying about bakery girls, Claudia.” Viren sat in his chair, gesturing for Claudia to sit beside him. “Ever since Rayla got here, Prince Callum’s attention has drifted from you to her.”
“I know.”
“That’s not acceptable.”
Claudia looked down at her hands. “He’s my friend and I didn’t want to embarrass him, but I never liked him, Dad. I like girls.”
“I know. But we’re a different cut above people who work in bakeries.”
“That’s not what Harrow says.”
“Claudia, please. In order for our families to be closer together, in order for us to keep living a life you’re accustomed to, I need you to make an effort to get Prince Callum’s attention again.”
“Dad…I don’t want to. If he wants to be with Rayla-”
“Soren wants to be with Rayla. You’ve seen how he makes a fool of himself around this castle when she’s in the room. Don’t you want your brother to be happy? It frees Rayla up if Callum’s taken.”
“How would I even do it?” Claudia put her arms around herself. Viren got up, wrapping an arm around his daughter.
“Callum wants to learn magic. Though both he and Harrow are deeply opposed to dark magic, start teaching him how to use the primal stone. Private lessons. Do whatever you can.”
“I don’t know….”
“Claudia, look at me.” She finally did, confusion in her green eyes. Viren shook his head. He hated that he was asking his own daughter to sacrifice her happiness, but he had plans. Harrow was growing more and more distant from him. Killing Thunder and taking the egg hadn’t done their friendship any favors. If anything, it had deteriorated it. They argued constantly and Harrow had threatened to send him out of the castle. Viren couldn’t let that happen. Harrow was becoming too against dark magic and was starting to doubt everything they had built towards. What if Xadia attacked and Katolis was defenseless? Or worse, Harrow tried to make peace and Xadia used it as an excuse to invade the entirety of the Pentarchy? Viren couldn’t let that happen. “Please. It’s important that you do this.”
“OK, Dad. I’ll try my best.”
“Good girl.”
-----------------------------------------------
Rayla watched from the window as the royalty from the other kingdoms came to the castle. They were coming to celebrate Ezran’s eleventh birthday. “They’re here,” she whispered to Callum and Ezran. They both looked over at her, interest on their faces. “Have you really never met any of them?”
“I met the former Queens of Duren when I was four,” Callum started, “but, besides, that, no. This party for Ez is pretty unorthodox.”
“Why? Seems counter-intuitive. You get a stronger alliance when you all know each other, right?” Rayla glared at herself in the mirror. Was that too obvious? Callum and Ezran were really trusting individuals, but she really could be slipping as she grew comfortable here.
“There’s a concern about influencing the other kingdoms. There’s a desire to be friendly, but to also be separate and to respect differences. Duren and Katolis have usually had a reasonably close relationship compared to the others. But when you have a country like Evenere, which is far out compared to everyone else, it can lead to concern about plotting and alliances.”
“Fair, I suppose.”
“We’re going to get ready for the party. You coming?” Rayla nodded, keeping her eyes on the window for a moment longer. This was the other reason she was here; information. As she followed the princes to their rooms, she noticed just how rushed everyone was. They were moving about and it felt like the whole castle was being remodeled. “Good thing I moved out months ago,” Callum said to Ezran.
Rayla raised a brow. “‘Moved out?’”
“Oh. You didn’t know?” Rayla shot him a look of confusion. “Ezran and I used to share a room. The day I turned 15, which was right before you got here, I finally got my own room. It’s next to Ezran’s, but I needed space.”
“Why did you two share a room for so long?”
Callum shrugged. “Maybe because of our mom’s death. I know I had nightmares and didn’t like being alone and when Ezran needed a room because he outgrew the crib, I offered mine. I only moved because the king suggested it.”
Ezran sighed. “Call him ‘Dad,’ Callum. He liked it when you did that one time.”
“It felt weird,” Callum whispered.
“Because you made it weird. You apologized right after and everyone could tell that you were thinking about it for a long time. He liked it. For all the Big Feelings Times we have, the two of you are so hesitant to be open about this.”
Rayla was quiet as they argued about whether or not Callum should call Harrow ‘dad’. What was she going to do while the royal families were here? If she mingled too much, it would be obvious that she was trying to get information. Viren was already suspicious of her. But if she stuck with Callum and Ezran she would be missing out on an important opportunity. When they approached their rooms, they saw Soren and Claudia arguing in the hall. “Can we help you?” Rayla called.
The two turned, smiling at the trio. Soren cleared his throat. “Rayla, I was wondering if you would like me to accompany you tonight? Usually, for these things, people take dates and-”
“Callum already asked and I said ‘yes.’” Rayla’s eyes widened a bit. It was the perfect chance. If Callum was her date, then she could meet the royals and have an excuse to not be too conspicuous. But, that hadn’t been why she had said that. She didn’t want to go with Soren. She looked over at a sputtering Callum. “Right?”
“Yeah,” he muttered. “I asked a little bit ago. Sorry, Soren.”
“Oh,” Claudia interrupted. Rayla’s eyes narrowed. “That’s a shame, I was hoping you and I could go together, Callum.”
“Really?” Callum raised a brow. Rayla looked at her door. She didn’t want to hear this. “Why?”
“Well, you and I have known each other for a long time, so…maybe the two of us could start thinking about dating.”
“But…Claudia I saw you in the bakery last week. You and the helper were very clearly flirting and making-out.” Claudia flinched. “I don’t know what’s going on here, but I’m sorry, I’m not interested in you like that anymore.”
Claudia’s jaw dropped for a moment, biting her lip when the shock probably wore off. “OK. That’s fair. Ezran, will you be my date?”
Ezran looked down at Bait. “Can Bait come?”
“Of course,” Claudia smiled.
“Sure!” Claudia, Soren and Ezran moved on, heading to their rooms to get ready. Callum hung back, still looking at her.
“Rayla?”
“Hmm?”
“I never asked you.”
“I know.” She said it so matter of factly it probably shocked him if his continued stare was any indication. “I didn’t want to go with Soren. I’m sorry I put you on the spot like that, but I didn’t see any other choice.”
“Is that the only reason?”
‘No’ almost escaped her lips. He needed to stop looking at her like that, like she was something to be admired and adored. “I trust you. Is that not enough?” Callum held her gaze for a moment longer, finally nodding. They stood in the hall a bit longer, static crackling in the air between them. “Besides, you need a good guard. Who better than me?”
Callum chuckled. “True. You can take anyone in the crown guard.”
“Yes, I can. And don’t you forget it.” Rayla turned away, entering her room. She leaned against the door for a few moments, pressing her clenched fist to her heart. Her heart was beating too fast. It always did that when he looked at her too long. ‘Does he see? Can he see through the illusion?’ She couldn’t tell. Ever since that first night on the balcony when he said something about her appearance was off, he sometimes looked at her like he could see through to her true form. He never said anything, so Rayla had no way of knowing if she was being paranoid or if he was quietly observing.
That wasn’t it, though. They talked on their balconies almost every night. Their winter at the Banther Lodge had been cozy and intimate and she had gotten to know him, Ezran and Harrow more. She liked what she saw. Liked it too much. Also….Ezran. Oh, gods, Ezran. Was she really here to kill Ezran? The more time she spent with him, the more she realized he was just a child and how wrong all of this was. The Dragon Prince hadn’t deserved to die, but, would justice be achieved by killing another innocent?
‘Stop it, Rayla! You’ve been having too many Big Feelings Times with them. You are here for a job. It’s not your responsibility to judge what is justice and what isn’t.’ It wasn’t her job at all. Rayla pushed away from the door and made her way to the bed. There was a blue gown on the bed. The gold embroidery on the skirt was obviously meant to be reminiscent of the uneven towers of Katolis. She ran a hand down the expensive silk. ‘Too much…’ Rayla pulled her clothes off and dressed in the gown. When she looked in the mirror to make sure it sat correctly, she was startled by her reflection. Human…she looked human. Would she ever get used to seeing blue eyes, rounded ears and blonde hair staring back at her?
Rayla stepped forward for a moment, hand touching the reflection and the other touching the necklace. What she wouldn’t give to pull it off and see herself looking back at her. Lujanne’s warning screamed loud in the back of her mind. ‘If you take that necklace off, the illusion will break. If you put it back on, you will not look exactly the same. There is no way of knowing if that difference could be explained away or not. You can never take it off as long as you are on this side of the border.’
Rayla quickly put the necklace under her dress. She didn’t need people asking questions. She did her hair in a loose bun, several chunks framing her face, and her small braid used to wind it all together. She had never thought about her looks before coming here. It was a distraction. There were most important things to do than having perfect hair. There were a few tubes and jars of, what she assumed, was make-up. “No way.” Rayla was not going to paint her face with human cosmetics if she wasn’t allowed to wear the dye of her people.
She put on the low heels Opeli had most likely picked out for her. The dress covered the heels. What was the point of wearing them if no one would even see them? She shook her head; just thankful she hadn’t been given anything with a corset or laces. She had seen that fashion here in Katolis and it didn’t interest her at all.
She looked in the mirror one more time and walked out the door to the hall. Callum was waiting for her. Her eyes widened as she took him. He was in a red jacket and a fancier version of his black pants. There was clear padding on his shoulders as well as the same embroidery of the uneven towers. His eyes scanned her form, slowly taking in every detail. She both wanted to hide and stand firm in his attention. “You clean up pretty good,” she finally said.
“You look beautiful.” That wasn’t fair…he couldn’t say things like that. Not when she was fighting her heart against him. Her heart was so desperate for her to run into his arms, tell him the truth, and maybe, just maybe, it would all work out. That wasn’t how things worked, though, was it?
“Thank you. I’m just hoping I don’t trip on this dress.” She lifted the skirt a bit to show the shoes. “I’m not used to heels, either.”
“You’re a pretty good dancer, though.” Rayla smiled. Callum had been tasked with teaching her how to dance since he wasn’t terrible at it. Rayla had taken to it quickly. It may not have been the same steps she knew, but Silvergrove was full of dancing. It was in their keys, their celebrations, their harvest, everything.
“You need to stop complimenting. You’re going to make me think you mean it.”
“I do. You’re amazing, Rayla.” Callum cleared his throat. “Shall we go?” He held his arm out, giving her the crook of his elbow. “I can’t wait to for you to show me off.”
“I’m showing you off?” Rayla chuckled.
“Of course. I’m the step-prince of Katolis. I need to be shown for the whole world to see. Oh…is the whole world going to see?”
Rayla looped her arm through his. “No. Just the important people.”
“Same thing.” Rayla laughed as he stuck his tongue out at her. They waited for Ezran and walked with him to get Claudia and Soren. The group of five exchanged pleasantries, Soren stumbling on his words as he complimented Rayla.
“The dress really suits you, Rayla.” Soren bowed a bit. “You sure you don’t want me to escort you?”
“I’m sure.” They walked behind Ezran and Claudia, who looked back at them every once in a while. Rayla didn’t know what game Claudia was playing, but she didn’t like it. It wasn’t acceptable to play with Callum’s heart like she was. “You got a problem with this?”
“No,” Claudia said too quickly. “Just wasn’t expecting it.”
“After seeing you give lingering looks to half the girls in the castle, I wasn’t expecting what you asked either.”
Claudia was quiet. Rayla wasn’t sure if she was simply refusing to answer or if she had offended her. Either way, Rayla couldn’t find it in her heart to care. They arrived at the hall, waiting for Ezran and Claudia to be announced. “This is so much,” she whispered.
“I know,” came Callum’s soft reply. “You can stay by my side all night if you want.”
“Thank you.” They walked forward when Opeli gestured.
“Introducing Prince Callum and King Harrow’s ward, Ms. Rayla.” Rayla took in the room. She saw a lot of figures she had seen from the window. She could hear whispers flitting to her ears.
‘She’s stunning. Look at that face!’
‘I heard a rumor she was gifted with weapons, but she looks so slim.’
‘They look uneven, don’t they? A rare jewel like that next to the step-prince?’ Rayla’s eyes flitted around the room, trying to find that particular voice. She saw a young man with a crown on his head dressed in golds and creams.
“Who is that?” she gestured with her chin when she got Callum’s attention.
He looked over and was quiet as he thought. “I think Prince Kasef of Neolandia.”
“So no avoiding him?”
“No. Why?”
Rayla looked back at Kasef. He was staring at her with heat in his eyes. She had heard rumors that Kasef acted like a child when he didn’t get a toy he wanted. “I don’t trust the way he’s looking at me.”
“How’s he looking at you?”
“Like he wants to eat me. I couldn’t be less interested.”
“Really? A lot of girls think he’s attractive from what I’ve heard.”
“I’m not into selfish children disguised as men. I’d rather kiss Soren, and I’m not into himbos, either.”
“‘Himbos?’” Rayla winced. Right, that was a Xadian term. Hopefully she could play this off.
“Not very bright, but muscular and kind. Well, he’s kind with Ezran. I don’t like how he treats you.”
“He’s not so bad,” Callum looked down at his feet. “He can be a pretty good friend when he wants to be.”
“He calls you the ‘step-prince’. I’ll believe you when he apologizes for that.” Callum didn’t push it. They finally made their way to stand by Harrow and Viren, standing off to the side. Rayla tuned out Harrow’s speech about friendship and forging connections to be a united Pentarachy. She’d heard Harrow practice it a million times. Watching everyone’s reactions to it was far more telling. There seemed to be a good-natured attitude in the air. Kasef, though, rolled his eyes every so often. Rayla looked at a young girl with blonde hair in a crown. She stared at Harrow with an intense gaze, but moved her eyes down the line. When she made it to Rayla, they held eye contact for a few moments. In those moments, Rayla saw a world of strength and pain. Someone who wasn’t willing to back down and didn’t trust because they were betrayed every time. “Queen Aanya,” she breathed.
Callum looked where she was, nodding slightly in ascent. “Yeah.”
Aanya held the gaze. What did she see? Finally, Aanya broke away first, but Rayla felt like she had given Aanya far more than she had learned herself. “She’s Ezran’s age.”
“She is.”
Harrow’s booming voice broke through Rayla’s concern. “Please, enjoy the night. And, again, thank you for coming to celebrate Ezran’s birthday.” Rayla stood to Callum’s side as the royals came up and introduced themselves. She curtseyed and kept her head down as much as good as she listened to everything around her.
When Kasef got to her, he picked up her hand and placed a kiss on it, a smirk that he probably thought was charming on his face. “May I have the first dance?”
“Already promised it to Callum.”
“Second?”
“Ezran.”
“Third?” Kasef’s voice was straining, squeezing her hand.
“Harrow.” It bothered Rayla how quickly lies left her lips lately, but she felt no guilt for this.
“Fourth?”
“Callum again.”
Callum coughed a bit. “Look, she clearly isn’t interested-”
“Was I talking to you, step-prince?” Kasef hissed. Callum looked down at his feet. “Thought so.”
Rayla glared at Kasef, snatching her hand away. “He’s right, I’m not interested. Pick someone else to annoy.”
“Rayla, right?”
“You’re bothering me and you’re asking to make sure you got my name right?”
“I just want to be sure I know the name of the woman I plan on pleasuring tonight.”
“Then you’re talking to the wrong girl. Not happening tonight, tomorrow, or ever.”
King Ahling sighed. “Kasef, leave the girl alone.”
Kasef cocked his jaw, but moved on. Rayla didn’t stare after him, looking straight ahead lest he turn back and think she was encouraging his behavior. Aanya was next. They stared at each other for a few moments. How did this tiny human queen make her feel so small? Aanya nodded. “I’m Aanya, Queen of Duren.”
“Rayla, a simple farm girl.”
“Not what I hear. How does a farm girl get so good with a sword she beats a member of the crown guard or so good with a spear she trains a prince?”
“We watch the military and play a lot. I’ve got good reflexes, I guess.”
“I see.” Aanya stared at her for a few more moments. “Has anyone ever told you that there’s something not quite right? It’s like something is pulling at the edge of my mind when I look at you.”
Rayla nodded. “Callum said that.”
Soren piped up from behind them. “It’s because she’s so pretty. You know how beautiful women make you stop in place. Same thing.”
Aanya was quiet, staring long and hard at Rayla. Finally, she turned away. “I see.” She turned back and nodded her head. “It was a pleasure to meet you.”
Rayla grabbed her hand, shocking them both. Aanya raised a brow but did nothing else. “What do you see?”
“I see someone who was deeply hurt by someone they love but hides it because it’s easier than thinking about it. I see confusion and anger and hurt. I also see a heart that’s too good for the world we live in, one always concerned with war breaking out. Perhaps, if you let go of that hurt and forgave, you could be happier.” Aanya walked away before Rayla could say anything.
“How did she do that?”
“She’s good at reading people,” Callum whispered.
“That’s an understatement.”
“You have to be if you live the way she does. Sycophants, assassination attempts, regents pretending to love her like their own child, whispering in her ears. It caused a stir when she took the throne last year. Everyone said she was too young, but she couldn’t trust the regents anymore. She’s either going to be one of the greatest rulers the Pentarchy has ever seen or she’ll be so clouded by distrust she’ll be a tyrant.”
“What do you think?”
Callum mulled it over. “She’ll be a good queen, I think. Maybe she won’t always make the popular choice, but she’s well-known for loving her people. She views them as her family because she lost her parents when she was a baby.”
The night dragged on. Rayla meant dignitaries and nobility who stared at her like she was a piece of cattle on display. Her face hurt from smiling and her feet hurt from the heels. The biggest reprieve had been dancing with Callum. A simple waltz had left her imagining they were the only two in the room. He had that effect on her, like the rest of the world just melted away and there was no one left but them. She had clenched her fists in Ezran’s clothes when he danced with Claudia while she and Ez danced.
“Rayla?” Ezran whispered. She looked down. “Callum doesn’t like her anymore. I don’t know what Claudia’s doing it, but anyone with eyes can tell her heart isn’t in it.”
“It doesn’t matter,” Rayla whispered.
“Then why are you so upset?” Rayla didn’t say anything. She danced with Harrow in silence, smiling at his jokes, but unable to get rid of the cloud hanging over her head now.
When she came back to the dais, Kasef was waiting for her. “May I have a dance?” he asked. Rayla couldn’t put her finger on it, but she had a feeling he expected her to say ‘yes.’
“Don’t you give up?” Rayla shook her head. “Will you leave me alone if I do?”
Kasef smiled down at her. “I can promise you you’ll never want me to.”
Rayla snorted. “Sure, but promise you’ll leave me alone.”
“If you truly wish it, if you let me have this dance, I will leave you alone for the rest of the night.”
“I’ll hold you to it.” Kasef took her hand and pulled her way too close when they got to the dance floor. Rayla pushed herself a more than appropriate amount away. “You’re pushy.”
“How old are you?” Kasef asked.
“16.”
“Marriageable age in Neolandia.”
“Cool,” Rayla huffed under her breath.
“You’re quite stunning. Why would you choose to be the step-prince’s date?”
“He’s nice and I like him.”
Kasef pulled her closer again. “I have experience with women.”
“How nice for you.” Rayla was going to slap him if he didn’t stop.
“A beautiful woman like you should be draped in silks and dripping in diamonds.”
“Not interested.”
“Come on. I’m offering you a chance no other farm girl would ever get.” Kasef spun her, and brought her back far too close. “If you keep my bed warm every night, I’ll give you all the pretty things you never dreamed of.” His hand snuck down her back and he groped her ass.
Rayla couldn’t hold back. She slapped him so hard his head swung to the side. “DO. NOT. TOUCH. ME.” Rayla held firm as he turned his head to look back at her. “Learn to take a ‘no’ every once in a while, and stop acting like a child. Actually, that’s not fair. Children know that ‘no’ means ‘no’. You’re spoiled and you need to grow-up.” Rayla walked away before he could say anything back. The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
“Well,” Aanya’s voice carried throughout the room, “I don’t know about all of you, but I think this party should move on. I’m tired of dancing. King Harrow, I heard that Katolis has a beautiful garden.”
Harrow nodded. “It does indeed. Let me show you all.” Rayla stayed back as everyone went to the gardens.
“You OK?” She was startled back into reality as Callum took her hand.
“I’m fine. Just grossed out.”
“Not even the jerkface dance could make that better.”
“No, it couldn’t.”
“What do you need?”
“Can we just go to bed? Or would that be rude?”
“Given the circumstances, I think it would be OK.”
“Did I really just slap the crown prince of Neolandia?”
“You did and it was awesome.” Callum chuckled with her, gently putting a hand on her upper back. “Let’s get you to bed.”
“Thank you.”
“Anytime.” He looked up into her eyes and she almost fell into them. His lips her so close and they were alone. He moved away before she could let her heart make the decision for her.
‘It’s for the best, Rayla. Your heart is a fool.’

Right back at ya, same-ask-buddy!! *does a pew pew pew sound* If Runaan escaped and made it back to the Silvergrove first, how would Callum and Rayla’s trio have gone down?
Hmmmm, a good question! I’d always pictured Runaan heading straight for Rayla. But what if he didn’t? Maybe… maybe Gren busts him out and he does go galloping after Rayla–on Gren’s horse, hair flying, in a shirt borrowed from Gren-- “no you keep it, I insist!”, but he loses her at the docks, stows away on another ship, and ends up arriving in Xadia ahead of her.
Okay this got ridiculously long and entertaining, so thank you very much!
Runaan’s lotus would never have sunk, and Ethari would have been overjoyed to see him return, even in his injured and bedraggled state. And they’d both be frantic over Rayla.
I have a headcanon that the six lotuses make that pinging noise not only to indicate life, but so the elves who were bespelled can actually locate each other, exactly like Rayla did on the castle battlements. She ran out there, paused, there was a ping, and then she said, “You’re here, I know you are.” and there was another ping when Runaan yelled from inside the coin but let’s not think about how he was trying to reach out to Rayla nope
So I’d imagine that Runaan would pack his and Ethari’s mounts with gear and go back for Rayla and Callum (and, he assumes, Ezran). Maybe time for a fresh shirt, absolutely time for a couple new swords from his hubby’s wall, but no time for hair brushing, that mane’s gonna be wild and messy this whole ride. He’d find her back across the Moonstone Path.after Callum connected to the Sky arcanum, after he used dark magic. Both of those things would land hard on Runaan. And so would seeing baby Zym!
Rayla would absolutely stand between Callum and Runaan with her swords out. “I can do this all day,” she’d sass him. “But I’ve got a mission. I’ll ask you one last time, Runaan. Please, help me. But if you won’t, then please stay out of my way.”
And Runaan gets softly distracted by the way Zym is clinging to Callum in worry. Runaan the assassin is scaring the Dragon Prince. So he puts his swords down. “Very well, Rayla. I’ll escort you to the Queen of the Dragons.” A longsuffering sigh. “And the human. And then he’s going back across the border.”
Rayla’s feeling protective, though. “Let’s let Zubeia decide that.”
Another sigh. “That’s fair. Now come. We have a long journey ahead.”
Rayla sees he still has one binding on, and she asks Zym if he can help Runaan the way he helped her. Runaan is shocked when Rayla holds the Dragon Prince up to the white binding, and the little dragon pulls it free with his baby teeth. “There is more than one way to release, Runaan,” she says kindly.
And Runaan takes a moment to be totally thrown off his game. This is not the hard, cold world he’s used to. But he buries his confusion and thanks Zym for his help. I bet he smiles, too, and bows, and Zym licks his nose, startling him and making Rayla laugh.
So Runaan rides his Moonstrider–perfectly and with exquisite control–while Callum sits behind Rayla–way behind Rayla, trying not to touch her at all–on the Shadowpaw. Zym perches anywhere he can on the Shadowpaw or its riders. He doesn’t ride behind Runaan.
Callum’s got to be struggling with the dichotomy of who Runaan is. He knows Runaan killed Harrow. But here he is being softer, off his mission.
The border is another unpleasant surprise: Callum’s use of dark magic means that Sol Regem won’t let him pass. Runaan’s willing to let Callum live and return home, but Rayla insists that the quest will mean so much more if Callum’s a part of it when they reach Zubeia. Runaan quietly disagrees, but Rayla says she’s not leaving him, so Runaan can once again get out of her way or help.
Runaan’s not used to this kind of leadership-level defiance from her. But her plan is sound, so he offers to help, to make sure it goes smoothly. Naturally, he ends up dancing across Sol Regem’s crown to throw off the sunbirds and their alarm cries, and distract the dragon at some critical point. Once they’re safe on the other side, though, he insists on bath time for the stinky human. Sits on a rock overlooking the little pool where Callum’s washing off. Doesn’t make the slightest attempt at conversation.Does manage to chuckle wryly at Callum’s suggestion that Runaan should go guard Rayla at her own pool, as if she needed Runaan’s help to stay safe.
Back at the Silvergrove, Runaan and Rayla dance to open the village illusion, while Callum has to stay to the side with Zym and watch. It took Rayla a whole day to convince Runaan to let Callum into the Silvergrove at all, and Callum tipped the argument by offering to go blindfolded the rest of the way. Runaan tied his scarf over his eyes and let Rayla make sure he didn’t fall off the Shadowpaw and die or anything.
The Silvergrove is still in a bit of uproar over the assassins’ deaths, and seeing a human in the village doesn’t calm things down. Runaan is put in the position of having to glare them into silence, defending Callum, and that makes him grumpier. But Rayla’s so happy! She’s home, and she gets to show it to Callum.
They all get Moonberry Surprise, and Ethari gets to explain what he knows about the Dragon Queen dying, and to take care of his family and see to their needs. He can’t stop touching Runaan, to prove to himself that he’s okay, back home safe. And he keeps hugging Rayla. Runaan won’t thank Callum for saving Rayla with dark magic. But Ethari does thank him for looking out for her the whole way here.
There is no “two blankets or just one” here. Runaan balks at the idea of letting Callum inside at all but Ethari tsks at him and says he’ll take care of it. He makes Callum a nice toasty hammock that hangs near the forge and keeps him toasty warm.
Runaan is in a much better mood the next morning. Ethari put in a lot of effort to relax and encourage him, because he knew what Runaan was going to do next: take Rayla and Callum and Zym to the Storm Spire. And he does. He seems a little baffled that he cares this much, but he’s doing it for Rayla, and Ethari insists it’s the right thing to do, and that he’s the perfect elf to make sure they get there safely.
All packed up, they head out the next morning. Runaan’s his usual stoic self, leading the way. And Ethari has given him his own pendant to wear. Callum is bursting with questions as he rides behind Rayla, and she answers him with her usual teasing sass. Hearing her voice, how easily she converses with the human, both soothes and worries Runaan. Knowing he’s got his arm back thanks to Zym is giving him a lot to think about, too. He’s basically using this part of the trip to process his feels, just like Rayla did in canon.
Ethari still shoots his lighthawk arrow, and Nyx intercepts it. But Ethari, tricky elf, doesn’t mention Runaan in his note, so Nyx doesn’t expect an assassin to be guarding the kids she’s come to mislead and rob. She smartens up at the tip of his blade, while Rayla elbows Callum and winks as if to say “Watch this.”
Negotiations ensue and an accord is swiftly reached, in which Nyx will lead them across the Midnight Desert, and if she doesn’t try anything clever, she’ll be rewarded on the far side. She agrees readily, and they set out. Runaan stays up all night at the oasis, so Nyx never tries to steal Zym.
Rayla and Callum still have a midnight chat, but it doesn’t start with her tears. She has both her dads and she was never ghosted. What’s weighing on her heart is whether she can live up to Runaan’s expectations now that she’s let him down once. She’s afraid he’s going to disown her or something. That he thinks she needs shepherding across Xadia like she can’t get there herself. She feels like he’s treating her like a child.
Callum sees something else. But he’s not comfortable talking about it because it paints Runaan in a much kinder light than he’s used to. He sees a stabby dad trying to make up for dragging Rayla onto a terrible mission, by helping her with her own, by trying to ensure that it goes well. He sees Runaan being protective and very very lowkey apologetic. But he’s not ready to allow Runaan to have that side yet. He ends up talking about Harrow for a couple of hours, and Rayla listens.
Runaan has to choose between keeping an eye on Nyx and keeping an eye on Rayla. He chooses Nyx. So he misses the part where Rayla kisses Callum and then glances over worriedly to see if Runaan was watching.
Runaan’s pretty exhausted the next sunrise as the ambler carries them across the desert, and the moment he’s out, Rayla and Callum grin and look at each other like they’re about to kiss again. And Nyx takes Zym and makes a beeline for the far side of the desert. Callum and Rayla yell after her. Runaan wakes and grabs his bow. His arrow finds Nyx’s wing before Zym can zap her. She still tumbles into the sand, and Runaan’s not interested in picking her up again. He’s woken up very grumpy. But while Zym returns to Callum, Rayla goes after Nyx and rescues her. Runaan isn’t really on board with her plan, but he does pot shot soulfang serpents from the ambler’s saddle to give Rayla enough room to reach Nyx safely and bring her back. Callum’s too worried about Rayla to really think about how easily Runaan can kill stuff.
Callum totally does his “Because she’s Rayla” speech right in front of Runaan. He’s just as flabbergasted as she is, because he knows just as well as Rayla what open feelings mean among Moonshadows. He doesn’t expect Callum to know that, but he knows Rayla knows. And she’s letting Callum keep talking.
“Rayla.” They both jump when he calls her name. But he just wants to talk. So, like the Moonshadow warriors they are, they climb way up the ambler’s neck, leaving Callum behind, and talk. Rayla shows Runaan how she sees Callum: brave, warm, a team player, skilled with primal magic, willing to do foolhardy things for the right reasons. And then she spins that, not onto herself, but onto Ethari and Runaan both. It’s her “I like him because he’s like you” speech. Runaan doesn’t see a single iota of Callum in himself. But he does see some of Ethari. And that gives him a lot of pause. He needs some time to think, so he tries to buy it by saying, “Don’t trust him yet.”
Rayla just sasses back, “Oh, it’s way too late for that, Runaan. He’s saved my life four times already.”
They cross the desert and Nyx cheekily demands her reward. Runaan gives her a raised eyebrow of judgment. “You said if I led you across the desert and didn’t try anything clever,” she says, “I’d be rewarded. And,” she adds, holding out her hand for payment, “I think we can all agree that I wasn’t very clever just then.” She tosses a sassy wink in with her grin.
Runaan just stares at her. Then he pulls one of his arrows from its quiver, snaps it in half, and hands it to her. “No one will buy that from you, so don’t try.”
“What’s it good for, then? A busted arrow.”
“A broken Moonshadow assassin arrow means your justice will come later. Try to live long enough to appreciate it.”
The group travels to the Storm Spire, and Ezran and Phoe-Phoe find them there. Runaan hangs back from Ezran, but he’s very distracted by Phoe-Phoe’s tranformation and her feather. He wants to ask Rayla about the Moon Nexus, but now isn’t the time. And this all happens in Avizandum’s shadow, making everyone feel very uncomfortable. Callum says his speech about how the statue makes him feel, and he says it loudly enough for Runaan to hear on purpose. Rayla holds his hand and stands with him. Runaan eyes Avizandum, then he looks back at the kids. He never intended to get this soft, but it’s Callum who’s letting him. It’s getting harder not to respect the young prince, because he does have so many traits that Runaan admires about his husband. But there’s a heavy shadow that lies between them, and it can’t ever be lifted.
Runaan takes the mounts up the Spire behind the kids. Ezran and Callum revive them with Ventus Spiralis. Runaan looks at Callum speculatively–he could’ve just let him suffocate. Callum just says, “We’ll need everyone together on this.” Because yes, it’s one thing to return to the Dragon Queen with an elf and a human bearing Zym safely. It’s another to return in the company of the assassin sent out to take Harrow.
But Zubeia isn’t awake, and soon Ibis sees the human army is coming. He flies off for help, and Runaan and Rayla find themselves where Lain and Tiadrin were, in the egg chamber. And then Runaan tells her what he saw in Viren’s coins. “Lain and Tiadrin didn’t run, Rayla. Viren took them, and he still has them. We were wrong.”
Callum defends the base of the Spire, and Runaan, surprisingly, joins him, leaving Rayla to stand where her parents stood. He just offers Callum a tolerant look when he steps out beside him, arrow nocked on his bowstring.
“Fighting to protect who you love?” Callum asks quietly.
Runaan pauses. “Always.”
Callum sketches a Fulminis rune. “Same here.”
And they fight side by side. Runaan keeps Callum safe. Callum keeps Runaan safe. It doesn’t resolve much. But it’s a start in the direction of forgiveness and trust.
And then after the battle, Ezran tells them that Viren’s sneaked up top after Zym. Runaan and Callum dash up the stairs, with Runaan pulling Callum by his coat half the way.
They reach the top in time to see Viren toss Rayla back, her swords flying. Runaan pushes Callum toward Rayla. “Stop her. He’s mine.”
Callum gasps as he sees Rayla gathering herself for a run at Viren. He leaps after her, spurred by desperate love, and tackles her into his arms on the steps of the Pinnacle. “Rayla, stop, you’ll die, you can’t! Don’t leave me. I need you.”
The words tumble out, but a shadow flickers past them, and they both look up in time to see Runaan tackle Viren off the cliff.
“No!” Rayla and Callum both yell. They scramble up, pick up a frightened and hurt Zym, and stare down into the clouds.
“I can save him, I can save him,” Callum’s mumbling. “I can do the wing spell, I know I can.”
“Look!” Rayla points down into the clouds. Something’s circling. Then a dark red shape bursts up into the setting sunlight, spirals, and lands back on the Pinnacle beside them. Runaan lets the shadowhawk spell dissipate and holds up the pendant chain, now empty of its moon opal.
“Love really does give you wings,” he says. He rests a hand on each of their shoulders, sees Viren’s fallen relic staff. “You’re the mage, Callum. You should look after that staff. Perhaps we can find a good use for it.”
And with one hand, he holds up a little pouch that he pickpocketed from Viren on the way down and jingles it. “Right, Rayla?”

no ordinary exchange
ch.1 of my self-indulgent rayllum college!au.
AO3. FFN.
xXxXxXx
“Katolis State University is proud to introduce its first Xadian exchange student in over one hundred years - everyone, please give a warm welcome to Rayla Moonshadow!”
Callum found himself cringing at the contrast between his stepfather’s genuine excitement and the student body’s... lackluster response.
“I feel bad for her,” Claudia murmured, resting her chin on her hand. “I understand why your dad is so happy, especially since he pushed so hard with the state to allow her to be here, but so many Katolians still don’t like Xadians. I mean, look at the poor girl’s face!”
Claudia had a point - the Xadian student did look extremely uncomfortable. Though Callum could clearly see that she was tall, she was standing in a manner that made her appear much smaller. Her white hair hung down to hide part of her face, the lavender streaks dancing through it almost washed away by the stage’s bright lights.
“Rayla will study here for the remainder of her sophomore year. If all goes well, one of you will attend the Xadian Academy next year,” Harrow continued. “But that is not something any of you need to worry yourselves over at the moment. I expect you all to make Rayla feel welcome here.”
“Maybe we should go talk to her afterwards,” Callum blurted out as his father continued to speak. He flushed when he realized what he’d suggested - apparently the words had left his mouth before they’d finished being processed in his brain.
Soren raised an eyebrow. “Where did that sudden eagerness come from?”
Callum shrugged, aware of how red his face had to be but ignoring it. “Like Claudia said. I feel kinda bad for her.”
Claudia popped her gum, shrugging. “I’m down. Since she’s a sophomore, I might even have a few classes with her. Based on the anti-Xadian attitudes of... of more than a few kids at this school, I have a feeling she’ll accept any company she can get. Even if it is from weirdos like us.”
Soren laughed as he jokingly elbowed his sister in the stomach. “Don’t lump me in with the two of you.” He pulled his phone out of his pocket to check the time. “Ugh. I have a class after this, so I can’t join you. But...” He put his phone away. “If you happen to hit it off, we can all go out one night and I can properly meet her.”
“Roger that,” Claudia said with a mock-salute, earning another elbow from Soren and laughter from Callum.
“Rayla, is there anything you want to say to your new classmates?” Harrow’s voice brought the attention of the three back to the stage.
The girl attempted to smile, though it was clearly more of a grimace. “Ah... I’m thankful for this opportunity.” Her accent was thick, but not enough for her to be misunderstood.
Harrow nodded, returning the mic to beneath his face. “And we are all grateful that you decided to take advantage of it.”
As his dad continued to drone on about the significance of the girl’s attendance at the school, Callum found his attention drifting down to his sketchbook. He was in the middle of working on a picture of his brother, Ezran, and Ezran’s leopard gecko, Bait. The jagged line that trailed to the edge of the page indicated the point at which he’d gotten distracted. He sighed and carefully erased it, doing his best to avoid smudging the graphite. He wanted to give the picture to Ezran for his fourteenth birthday, which wasn’t for another two and a half months, but his inspiration tended to wax and wane thus he decided to begin working on it early. He became so focused on his sketch that he didn’t notice the assembly had begun to disperse until Claudia snapped her fingers in front of his nose, startling him and causing him to drop his pencil and very nearly drop his sketchbook.
“Someone’s on edge,” Claudia said wryly as she returned his pencil to him. “Come on! My dad and yours are talking to the girl right now, but we have to hurry if we want to catch her before any classes she might have.”
Callum nodded, closing his sketchbook and shoving it into his satchel before following his friend out of the seats in the audience and down towards the stage.
“Again, I do apologize for the late notice,” Viren was saying. His voice oozed with a false pleasantry that sent chills down Callum’s spine. “But none of our available students were willing to room with a Xa...” He trailed off as Harrow sent him a warning glare. “No one wanted to room with someone they didn’t know.”
“I’ll room with her!” Claudia offered as she arrived at the foot of the stage, earning surprised looks from all. “You know that there’s more than enough room in my dorm, Dad.”
Viren offered his daughter a pained smile. “Are you certain about this, Claudia?”
She nodded, rolling her eyes. “Obviously, Dad, or else I wouldn’t have offered.”
The Xadian girl shook her head. “You don’t need to do that. Really. I have no problem with finding an apartment off campus if it’s more convenient -”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Claudia interrupted with a dismissive wave of her hand. “The best way to find your niche at KSU is live smack in the middle of it. As the daughter of the dean” - she gestured to Viren - “I was blessed with a larger dorm, plus the luxury of no roommate.” She tossed her hair over her shoulder. “I have space, you need a room - problem solved.” She offered her hand and a smile to the girl, though her being on the floor and the girl on the stage meant the girl knelt down to shake her hand. “I’m Claudia.”
“Rayla. Though I’m sure you know that already.”
“So it’s settled!” Harrow said, clapping his hands together. “Rayla and Claudia will room together. I’ll see what I can do about arranging it so the two of you also have at least one class together.”
“Harrow? Viren?”
Attention in the room shifted to a blonde woman standing at the auditorium’s door.
“Oh, crap,” Harrow muttered, glancing at his watch. “Are we late, Opeli?”
“Not yet,” was the woman’s brisk response. “But I wouldn’t push your luck.”
Viren headed to the exit immediately, pushing past Opeli and not bothering to say any goodbyes.
Harrow returned his attention back to the trio. “Claudia, thank you again. Rayla, if you need anything at all, don’t hesitate to come to me. Callum -” He stopped. “Callum, have you been here the whole time?” At his stepson’s embarrassed nod, he sighed. “Right. Glad to know I’m a terrible father.”
“It was actually Callum who wanted to come talk to Rayla,” Claudia said, slinging her arm around Callum’s shoulders and causing him to stumble sideways. “But he’s a little shy, so he kind of became my silent cheerleader.”
Callum groaned at the description. “Thanks, Claudia.”
“Harrow, you need to leave now,” Opeli called from the doorway. “The council is pissed off enough already. Let’s not add to their list.”
Harrow sighed and said goodbye, pulling Callum into a hug before taking his leave.
Callum ended up being the one to break the silence - which, in all honesty, was not something he often did. “Hi,” he stammered, offering the new girl his hand to shake. “I’m Callum. Obviously you’ve already met my dad.”
“Rayla. And Harrow’s your dad?” She raised an eyebrow as she released his hand. “Forgive me if this is rude, but you don’t look much like him.”
Callum laughed as he pulled his hand away. “Stepdad, technically.”
“Ah. Makes more sense.”
“I don’t know about you guys,” Claudia began, “but I don’t have class for another hour and I’m feeling kinda peckish. Want to hit up that new café?”
Callum shrugged. “Sounds good to me.” He turned to Rayla, giving her a small smile. “Care to join us?”
Rayla hesitated, uncertainty flickering in her violet eyes. “Are you sure you want to be seen hanging around me? I know that I’m not exactly welcome here.”
“Trust me, most people really couldn’t care less,” Claudia reassured her. “And if anyone does say anything about it, I’ll just get them expelled.”
Rayla blinked. “You can do that?”
Claudia shrugged. “Let’s hope we don’t have to find out.”
Rayla burst out laughing at her comment, and Callum found himself joining in. Her laughter was contagious, and the way her accent seemed to leak through was... endearing. “Well, as long as you’re sure you don’t mind.”
“Of course we don’t!” Claudia exclaimed. “Believe me, we wouldn’t have offered if we did.”
“That’s very true,” Callum added as they began walking out of the auditorium. “Claudia is very selective about her company.”
“Callum, you make me sound like a prick!” Claudia protested. “I just have standards. That’s all.”
Callum continued to banter with his friend as they made their way to the café, and while Rayla didn’t join in, he was pleased to see that the smile on her face didn’t fade.
xXxXxXx
Over the course of half an hour, Callum learned that Rayla was studying literature and sociology, with a few women’s and gender studies’ courses thrown in here and there. She was from Silvergrove in Xadia, and no, not everyone’s accent was the same as hers. Or as thick as hers. Her parents had been security guards for a Xadian diplomat, and as a result hadn’t been around much, even before the plane crash that had taken their lives a few years ago. She lived with family friends, Runaan and Ethari, and she had no siblings, for which she was eternally grateful. She’d studied martial arts for as long as she could walk. A few years ago she’d started to learn how to incorporate blades into her fighting.
Claudia was impressed by this fact, and asked if Rayla would be willing to provide a demonstration for her at some point, to which the Xadian girl eagerly agreed.
Callum felt no need to ask for a demonstration; Rayla was currently wearing just a normal t-shirt, and based on the way her muscles flexed every time she moved her arm it was clear to him that she was telling the truth about her physical prowess.
“Aw, man,” Claudia complained as she checked the time on her phone. “I have bio in fifteen minutes. Guess that means I have to say my farewells.” She stood up, giving the two a mock bow. “A delightful conversation we shared, truly. See you at the dorm, Rayla!” With a wink and the swish of her black coat, she was gone.
An awkward silence fell. Callum wasn’t sure how to break it - until then, Claudia had been the one primarily pushing the conversation forward.
“I take it you don’t have a class to get to, then?” Rayla asked before taking a sip of her coffee.
Callum shook his head. “Nope. I don’t have physics until one.” And it was currently only twenty minutes before noon.
“Hm.” Rayla pulled a sheet of paper out of her backpack, which was hanging from her chair. “I have Shakespearean Literature at 12:45.” She glanced at him, an embarrassed expression falling upon her features. “I don’t suppose you could show me where Seton Hall is?”
Callum laughed. “I don’t mind showing you, no. Although I have to admit I only know where that’s located because of Claudia.”
Rayla gave him a knowing grin. “Ah. I see. So how long have you two been together?”
Callum stiffened as his face turned bright red. “I - she - we’re not together!” he stammered as he dropped and barely caught his pen, his voice an octave higher than he would have liked. “We’ve just known each other for a long time! Besides, Claudia is a sophomore and I’m just a freshman, which means she’s - she’s way out of my league.” He placed his pen down as the red slowly began to fade from his face. “Why do you - why do you ask? Did you... notice something?”
Rayla, though seemingly startled by his outburst, chuckled. “So it’s one-sided affection. Gotcha.” She lightly flicked his nose, which was an action Callum would have been embarrassed to receive from anyone else but for some reason didn’t mind when Rayla did it. “Don’t fret. One year isn’t a huge gap, you know. And I asked because I noticed you sketching her the entire time.”
Callum flushed and pulled his sketchbook closer to him, though he didn’t bother to hide the picture of Claudia. “There’s actually two years difference between us,” he admitted. “Both she and her brother missed a year of school when her parents got divorced.”
Rayla winced, nodding. “That sucks.”
Callum snorted at her blunt response. “Well, that’s one way to put it.”
“Precisely.” Rayla took a final sip of her coffee. “I don’t think you should give up hope, sad prince. You’re pretty cute. If you ever work up the courage to ask her, she’ll probably say yes.”
Callum raised an eyebrow at her comment, a near-pitiful attempt to regain his composure and pretend he wasn’t still blushing. “‘Prince’? What’s that about?”
Rayla shrugged. “Your dad is the head of the college. He’s kind of like a king. As such, you are kinda like a prince.”
Callum paused, then grinned. “All right. I can live with that.”
Their conversation shifted back to school, and Callum explained how he was majoring in physics and minoring in art, and that his favorite elective was Renaissance History. Rayla asked him about sports, and while she was disappointed to learn that there was no martial arts team, the idea of wrestling appeared to intrigue her.
“Do you know if they allow girls?” she said.
Callum shrugged. “No idea. Remember - I haven’t been here for a full semester yet. Plus...” He gestured to himself. “I don’t exactly scream ‘wrestler’, do I?”
Rayla snickered. “Well, you’ve got that right.”
Callum gasped in mock-offense at her comment. “How stereotyping of you.”
“You said it first!”
Before Callum knew it, it was already 12:30. Rayla was easy to talk to, even if she did bruise his ego, and so far time was flying by when he was around her. She was funny, quick-witted, and charming - at least in his opinion.
It saddened him to think that some people would never approach her simply because she was Xadian. While tensions had certainly lessened between Katolis and Xadia, the situation was nowhere near perfect, and he was keenly aware of the shocked and even disgusted looks that had been sent their way just from being in the café together.
“Are you okay with showing me where my class is now?” Rayla asked as she threw away her cup and the wrapper that had held her pastry. “I want to get there a little early, if I can.”
“Sure,” Callum replied, following her lead and disposing of his trash. He tucked his sketchbook and his pen into his satchel, but before he could get to the door, Rayla stepped forward to hold it open for him.
“Princes first,” she said with a smirk, snickering as he rolled his eyes.
“Seton Hall actually isn’t far from here,” Callum said as they headed further into campus. “It’s the same building the auditorium and most acting classes are in.”
Rayla frowned upon pulling her schedule out of her back pocket and examining it, straightening out a bend in the top right corner of the page. “Why aren’t my other literature classes in this building?”
“I always thought they put Shakespeare in the building with theatre classes because of the overlap between the courses,” Callum offered. “Maybe you get to see them perform some of the plays.”
Rayla shrugged, shoving her schedule back into her pocket. “I guess I’ll find out.”
They arrived at her classroom a few minutes later, with just under 10 minutes left before her class started.
“I suppose this is where we part ways,” Rayla said, shouldering her booksack and giving him a soft smile. “It was nice meeting you, Callum. I hope we find time to hang out again.”
Callum chuckled. “With Claudia as your roommate, I’m sure plenty of opportunities will arise.” He hesitated, then added, “I could give you a tour of campus. Someday. If you’re interested.”
Rayla’s smile widened. “I’d like that a lot.” She reached into her pocket, pulling out her receipt from the café before ripping it in half. “Can I use your pen?”
Callum fished his pen out of his satchel and handed it to her, their fingertips brushing as he did so. She proceeded to scribble something on one half of the receipt before handing it all back to him.
It was a phone number, he realized.
“The school provided me with a temporary phone and number to avoid international texting charges,” she explained, shoving her hands into her pockets. “Rather kind of them, now that I think about it.” When Callum didn’t respond, instead simply staring down at the slips of paper and the pen in his hands, she rolled her eyes and sighed in mock-exasperation. “Callum, the polite thing to do when someone gives you their number is to give them your own.”
Callum felt the blood rush to his face. “Right,” he stammered, tucking her number away in his pocket and writing his own onto the other half of the receipt before handing it to her.
Rayla winked at him as she accepted the paper. “See you later, Callum!” she said before disappearing into her classroom.
Callum remained there, frozen, for a few seconds more, his pen still clutched to his chest. Rayla was... an interesting person, to say the least. She seemed smart - certainly more clever than him.
Then Callum remembered that he, too, had a class starting soon. But his phone buzzed only a few minutes after he’d headed out of the building.
(330) 229-6868: I’m sure you’ve realized by now that typically only one person receives a phone number in an exchange between acquaintances
Callum, in fact, had not thought that deeply about it, but he wasn’t going to tell Rayla that. He added her as a contact before responding.
Callum: Yeah, I was wondering, lol
Rayla: I assure you that there is a method to my madness
Callum: Riiiight
Rayla: Look. I knew you wouldn’t have the guts to ask for my number
Rayla: Don’t deny it
Callum guiltily erased the beginning of That’s not true.
Callum: Maybe
Rayla: And I also knew that even if I gave you my number, you wouldn’t dare to text me first
Rayla: Now we both win!
Callum couldn’t stop himself from grinning at his phone at her response. So not only was she smart and funny, but she was also far more lighthearted than he’d originally given her credit for.
Callum: Seems so
Rayla: oh my god you sound like a pretentious douche over text
Rayla: Class is starting soon
Rayla: Give my number to Claudia pls
Callum: Ofc
She didn’t respond, so he assumed her class must have started. He tucked his phone into his satchel and continued his walk to physics, stepping up his pace to ensure he’d get there on time. And while he walked, he couldn’t keep the happy smile off his lips at the thought of his new friend.
Strange.
But he liked it.

Someday - A Rayllum Thing
This is one of the first times I’ve written these characters, os feedback is always really appreciated! I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it :)
- - -
“I just don’t know what to think Zym.”
“Churrup!”
“That’s not really helpful, little guy,” Callum sighed, leaning forward to prop his chin on a fist. He gazed despondently across the small clearing, watching as Zym gleefully jumped from puddle to puddle. It had rained yesterday, which had driven their trio to find temporary shelter. By the time they had all squeezed through a crack in a nearby cliff-face, Callum, Rayla, and Zym had been soaked to the bone and shivering. The crack had opened into a narrow cave that was just big enough for the three of them to sit together, squished side by side like a can of sardines in the darkness.
They hadn’t spoken for a while, just listening to the echoes of raindrops as it hit the towering Xadian trees outside their cave. Callum was only just beginning to lose feeling in his left foot (he didn’t want to disturb Zym, who was asleep in his lap, by moving), when Rayla spoke.
“How do you think Ezran is doing?”
Callum blinked, caught unaware by the question. Rayla was constantly surprising him with her empathy, proving in a variety of ways that she did care for him and his brother. A small knot of guilt formed in his stomach. All he had been thinking about was the fact that he was pressed up against Rayla in the dark. In fact, he couldn’t seem to stop thinking about the warmth of her arm against his shoulder, or the way her hair tickled his neck whenever she would lean over to pet Zym.
“He’s probably home by now,” Callum said, “And hopefully the king’s advisors are taking good care of him. I mean, most of them seemed pretty helpful when we were back home.”
Rayla mumbled something to herself, the words too indistinct for Callum to make out. Realizing the conversation was over, he closed his eyes.
“I’m kind of glad Ezran isn’t here,” Rayla said suddenly, interrupting his thoughts again.
“Why is that?” Callum’s brow wrinkled in his confusion.
“Well, we wouldn’t fit in here for one thing,” Rayla said, laughing softly. Callum couldn’t help his grin. Her laugh was so bubbly and tentative as if she wasn’t sure if she was joking or not.
“We’d be all wet,” he agreed. “Or wetter, I suppose.” He ran a hand through his damp hair to enunciate the point.
“Yes… and I probably wouldn’t get to spend so much delightful quality time with you,” she continued. Her tone was colored with sarcasm, but he could tell she was only teasing.
“Uh, yeah. And I with you, I mean, I also enjoy spending time with you, I mean-” Callum cleared his throat uncomfortably, his ears turning pink. Why was he so flustered by her?
“Okay Callum,” Rayla smiled at his ruffled composure, her Xadian accent drawing out the vowels in the words with a rolling drawl. Callum cleared his throat again, unable to think of a way to continue the conversation.
And that had been that. Callum still wasn’t sure what to make of the new butterflies that seemed content to flutter in his stomach every time Rayla smiled. Or the way he seemed to blush every time he said something to her. It was as if his brain had suddenly stopped working around her!
Zym shrieked happily as he landed in an especially muddy puddle. His scales were crusted with muck from his game, which Callum knew would take forever to wipe away. As soon as Rayla got back from her excursion to gather food, they would continue on their journey. Callum assumed that her return would also mark the return of his perpetual embarrassment. If only he could master himself enough to have a simple conversation with her, he was sure he could figure himself out. The last time he had felt so overwhelmed in a girl’s presence had been with Claudia…
“Oh my gosh! Zym, I’ve figured it out!” Callum sprang upwards, a strange buzzing filling his head. He began to pace, scooping up Zym on his way past. “It’s no wonder she gives me a stomach ache, and I can’t form complete sentences whenever I talked to her! She’s so intelligent, kind, and heroic… how could I not have seen it!” He lifted Zym up so they were face to face, smiling the whole while. “I have a crush on Rayla!”
The weight of the realization suddenly hit him, and he dropped Zym when he began to squirm in protest.
“Oh no! Zym! I have a crush on Rayla,” Callum his voice reduced to a frantic whisper. The dragon merely tilted his head, as though he was confused by the sudden shift in emotion.
“Chewoo?”
“There’s no way I’ll ever be able to do anything about it! She probably wouldn’t ever feel the same way.”
“Who feels what way?” Rayla asked, emerging from the trees. She sheathed her blades as he watched, a graceful movement that indicated years of familiarity with the weapons.
“Nobody feels any way, I mean… nothing. Um- food huh?” Callum stammered, stiffening like a deer in headlights.
“Uh… yeah. I found a zazzberry bush over there,” Rayla said, gesturing loosely over her shoulder. She regarded Callum skeptically, then shook her head, a physical dismissal of his oddness.
“Cool, you’re perfect- Um! That’s perfect. Excuse me,” Callum felt nauseous. He really needed to stop talking.
“Are you alright Callum? Anything you want to tell me?” Rayla had a strange glimmer in her eye as she spoke, as if she was sharing a secret with him. Callum couldn’t make any sense of it. He figured she was secretly laughing at his obvious awkwardness.
“No, not really,” Callum said. But maybe someday. Definitely someday.

Key to His Heart Theory: Shot Through the Heart, and You're (S5) to Blame
Intro
So a little over a year ago (since usually I think about things meta wise for at least a good month before writing them down), I wrote a meta about why I thought the Key of Aaravos might hold a quasar diamond, specifically Aaravos' missing chest piece. His heart, if you will.
At the time, I thought it was a very strong contender for what the cube might be, even if it didn't necessarily give us a clear depiction on what it might be used for, and was again operating under the assumption the cube itself is something Aaravos even wants back or needs (which is assumption still, at this point).
It made sense loosely with some of the new information we'd gleaned about the cube from S4 (mostly the Callum pawn intro with its bright flashing light, the emphasis on hearts in the narrative with Ezran's speech, the 4x04 flashbacks) and was likewise built upon a previous meta regarding the series' use of Egyptian mythology (Thoth and Ibis being present somewhat in Callum's arc, the main trio's parallels to another Egyptian myth trio, Aaravos' mirror and mirrors as objects of divination, and potential matching symbolism with the ankh).
The Key to His Heart theory was also built on previous seasons — largely the Magma Titan plot line, and Avizandum being stabbed in the heart — in addition to Aaravos' chest piece, seemingly, being notably absent, which seemed indicative of certain lines from the short stories, particularly Rayla (S4's Dear Callum), but we'll talk more about these later:
Please don’t let this hurt too much. But, if it does—if you feel that soft aching—know that that piece of your heart isn’t missing. It’s not missing at all, Callum: I’m carrying it with me! Always.
If you're interested in this theory and want to know about it, I recommend reading the two metas I've linked above, as the rest of this won't really be delving too much into what I've already written about, and talking about how season five has given more potential evidence.
With that out of the way, let's get into it in rough order of "most to least" likely:
Season Five
TDP Reflections
Whereas hearts weren't mentioned too much in the short stories leading up to S4, they became a reoccurring motif every TDP reflection story going into S5.
Fools. They might as well have held their own hearts, beating and bloody, in the palms of their hands. Kim’dael knew that if she showed them her heart—or something convincingly like it—the Sunfire elves would do exactly what she wanted them to do.
“Rayla,” she said, meeting Redfeather’s gaze. “My name is Rayla. And I’m going home.” Redfeather sighed. “Oh, you bleeding heart.”
“They balk at shadows, then.” Aditi pulled a slip of white-hot metal from the forge and turned to place it upon a gilded anvil. “I see your heart—and I am not afraid.”
It stared up at him. Ezran felt a coldness twist its way around his heart. It took his lungs, too, and for a long moment he could not breathe, could not feel anything but an unfamiliar anger so potent it seized the whole of him, inside and out.
Viren staggers backwards, his last breath shuddering through the blade. His white robes turn red at his heart. Something in Soren’s own chest shatters along old cracks, but he cannot look away.
“You are stronger than this. All storms end!” Rex rumbled a snort through flared nostrils. “What lies at its heart?”
He wept for his city, his people, and the darkness struck deep into their hearts.
While one may say it ends with a sunrise, another will insist it ends at nightfall. Yet at the heart of the story is a single, simple truth…A star fell from the sky.
From where Kim’dael stood, she could only see the brilliant aura of its magic. For a moment, it was as though the queen’s heart overflowed with light.
Now, some of this is undeniably because a heart is a short hand for emotion and one of our most useful metaphors for communicating a variety of emotion. However, I did think it was particularly interesting / eye catching that these lines tended to overlap with the series' growing light and darkness motif and emphasis on wounds/scars (to the point we have a 5x02 episode titled "Old Wounds" that refers to both Viren's past and Callum and Rayla's healing relationship).
But by far the one that struck me the most, and seemed the most reminiscent of how Aaravos's (literal?) wound manifests is this paragraph from Claudia's short story:
Lissa had left her years ago, but the space she had owned in Claudia’s heart remained. It was a dark place now, hard and hateful, its edges raw as a wound that had forgotten to heal.
Mountains had crumbled and left in their wake a vast new sea. It was as though the land had been dealt a great wound and bled a hundred years. Terror washed across the remnants of humanity like a wave: What power could fell mountains? Turn all the world dark, and bleed a sea from stones?
—Ripples (pre-S5)
As well as Aaravos' clear desire to have revenge over the Startouch elves for something that seems to go beyond the resentment over just being banished:
I have not seen the stars in centuries. But when I see them again—when the stars are forced to look upon me, their dark brother—they will know how I have waited. And when everything they have built lies shattered, I will savor their fall from the sky. For I have been patient.
—Patience (pre-S4)
We don't know yet if we are going to get more TDP reflections going into S6 or S7, but given the way the previous stories emphasize the heart as both a symbolic idea (a darkened, hollowed out heart) and a literal entity you can hold in your hands... It's clear there's something going on symbolism else, otherwise why be so consistent? But enough of the reflections, for now.
Time to talk about S5 itself.
Laurelion
Previously, I thought the cube in the intro (a literal glow toy, as Rayla identified back in 1x05) already had similar properties to the star-glow effect in the title intro back at S4.
At the time, this was more of a guess. Most of the Star magic we'd seen at that point we weren't able to fully identify as such, it seemed a bit more magenta in colour, and while there was a parallel in the bright flash of light upon releasing Sir Sparklepuff, there's also a bright flash when the prison is actually made. It's just a good short hand for a crescendo of magical power, you know? We didn't know if quasar diamonds were even going to be white, besides the one presumably in Aaravos' chest concept art wise.
And yet — it still felt like something to me. Then S5 with Laurelion came along.
The Death of the Immortal
K: "And though undying, took last breath, immortal Laurelion was no more." C: That's good, right? I mean when someone "was no more," that's — that's dead, yeah? K: It's a bit confusing, but that is the clearest implication. Though it is somewhat odd they call them undying and immortal. C: Well, that doesn't sound so immortal? Laurelion "was no more". K: Right. C: But how? How did they...? K: Right here. "White as the star's heart it pierced, ivory draconic brought death's bite known ever forth as Novablade." C: It's a sword.
There's a few noteworthy things about this whole exchange:
The poem has to be relevant eventually, otherwise why include it at all when you easily could've just had Kazi and Callum stumble across the sword period?
It confirms that the heart of a star is something that can be pierced, presumably removed, and white, which I think is the biggest "hell yeah" to the 4x04 intro
There is no reason to point out the contradictions in the poem itself unless A) the sword doesn't work the way we think it does and/or B) we are going to find out why the "undying and immortal" thing matters — and they make sure to emphasize the contradictions quite a bit as well, so they definitely want us to notice
If Laurelion died, and Aaravos took his place, that would explain how Laurelion — identity wise — could die while the same person under a new name could also remain alive / immortal
We learn in Rayla's pre-S5 short story that Ghosts don't often keep their real names, and take a new one as the final severance of their bond with their old community. For all extents and purposes, Aaravos was Ghosted (banished) from his community as well. Taking a new name would make sense
"That must've been when [Harrow] fell." "Fell? Fell! He didn't fall, Rayla, he didn't trip and fall on the ground — he got killed!" (2x08)
There's more speculation here regarding the actual sword and draconic ivory, but that is another post for another day that other smart people have made if you are interested. For now let's just focus on the heart.
We know Laurelion had a heart; we know it got stabbed with the Novablade, leaving Laurelion both no more (i.e. dead) and yet immortal / undying. We know that Arc 2 in particular has had an emphasis on losing your sense of self and identity ("I was his puppet" / "We can't save everyone, Soren" / "But I'm not evil. It's me" / all of Viren's dream visions). We know that a Star's heart is white. We know that Aaravos seemingly used to have one, and now it's either missing or impermanent, only visible sometimes.
(Putting a pin in the second image cause we'll roll back around to it in the counter evidence section.)
We know his chest centrepiece glowed when he was imprisoned, and we know it was seemingly gone when he got banished. We know something about the Key of Aaravos was able to reveal his treachery.
I'm not saying any of this is for sure connected, but it does make you think, at least a little?
That, and it'd play into another bit of potential interesting foreshadowing / symbolism we got in s5 with
Viren Heart Theory
This is another theory I've discussed in more detail elsewhere, so I'm going to link to it here, but it wouldn't feel right to not talk about it at least a little here. Basically the theory is that Viren used his own blood / a piece of his heart, or possibly the whole thing, and the relic staff in order to save Soren when he was a young child.
This is largely due to Viren's spotlight turning red after he begs to be able to save Soren, and cinched by Kpp'Ar pointing specifically at Viren's heart only for Viren to deflect and start talking about Soren's case specifically. Whatever he did seemed to make him more 'powerful,' but at a great personal cost ("In the name of love you may perform acts that are so unforgivable, you will never forgive yourself") and something he finds the need to justify ("I had to do something! I had to save him! I had no choice!").
If Viren did this, it also adds another layer to Viren's sentiment of "Harrow's death breaks my heart" being well, half-hearted, in addition to Soren literally stabbing illusion Viren in the heart in 3x09. Viren mutilated his heart for his son's life, stopped being able to properly express love to said son, and then Soren stabbed his father right in the place that presumably saved him as a child. Ouch.
It seems likely that one of the reasons Aaravos was able to prey so aptly on Viren's desire for importance and attention — to Matter — was because Aaravos might've tried and failed earlier on to get the Startouch elves to listen to him pre-banishment. Being ignored, exiled, and disempowered is something he can relate to, and something he doesn't mind taking advantage of when it suits him.
However, if this combination could save someone Viren loved, it makes me wonder if Aaravos did something similar to likewise try (and fail?) to save someone he loved, too. It's either that or the Startouch elves just completely ripped it out, so... I guess we'll have to see?
But yeah — if Viren did it, then I'm expecting it's more likely that Aaravos did it, too. That is all.
The Pawn Intros
But Dragons, you say, didn't we already talk about the Callum pawn intro?
And to that I say yes, but — thanks to a promo S6 picture of Aaravos crying, we know something else very important about said intros that we didn't know before: they take place at the Sea of the Cast Out.
The sky, the mountains... the fact we know, thanks to the statues in 5x09, that this is likely where Aaravos' grief — his wound, if you will — began to bleed and take root, leading to his thousands of years of seeking vengeance and using just about anything or anyone he could. This is, presumably, where his chess game started... and where it is, symbolically at least, going to end.
Okay, so it's the Sea of the Cast Out — why does that matter?
Well, we know the Sea of the Cast Out is a site of literal trauma for Aaravos. We know, thanks to the statues of Aaravos and the Merciful One, that it plays into the same reaching motif we see Viren participate in quite a few times, both in his intro and in other places/relationships (most notably Sarai, Harrow, and Terry).
The Sea of the Cast Out is also, perhaps more importantly for this theory's purposes, near Elarion. What little we do know about the city beyond it being an important place for humans and dark magic ties it repeatedly to nature through The Midnight Star poem:
Elarion, trembling seed, lay down to earth in icy night, and in the cold her roots took hold defying winter’s deathly bite. Elarion, fading bloom, afraid to wilt and dim and die, [...] Elarion, dying husk, did wilt and whimper in the dark [...] Elarion, black-eyed child, her twisted roots spread deep and far,
as well as a tale about the Flowers of Elarion, precious blooms that could soothe the senses and turned to dust come morning—flowers that were left as "a fair exchange of beloved for beloved" (Tales of Xadia). Put a pin that Exchange idea because I swear we're gonna come back to it but not in the usual way you might be expecting, or at least not entirely.
And we have good reason to believe this nature motif is tied to Aaravos' current imprisonment as well, given how present flower imagery is for his mirror.
So the Sea of the Cast Out and Elarion seem to be the two places we know of thus far that are not only the most important to Aaravos, but the most instrumental to his banishment. It would not surprise me if either Aaravos got involved in what would become Elarion either because he was banished, or it was what he was banished over, or if discovering the truth of what happened there is likewise why the Archdragons were partially like "Yeah, we gotta lock this guy up" (now that they knew he posed a serious threat). The fact that Elarion is referred to as a child (everything with "blood of a child,"), black-eyed (which denotes dark magic), and winter's "deathly bite" ("White as the star's heart it pierced, / ivory draconic brought death's bite") just all ties together nicely in being related even if we're not totally sure how.
But Aaravos having his chest piece removed by force / as punishment in addition to being cast out by the Startouch elves, or him taking it out himself and giving it to someone who was lost... There's a lot of roads to get here as to why this stuff all seems connected if the Key is indeed his chest piece, which offers up both a power up, a sad tragic backstory, some baller symbolism, and some nice double meanings as to what it is key wise.
As the Key works in the moment, it doesn't seem like it's something that would be very useful to a primal mage, as other than pretty easily identifiable gemstones they wouldn't be using much the key identifies. However, the function of the Key being able to categorize and sort magical creatures and plants from each other is something that is very useful if you're a dark mage and need to shore up your ingredients list.
If the Key has Aaravos' chest piece in it, there are two main prongs this offers:
It may have been instrumental in helping humans discover dark magic, hence the "Elarion, searing white" and could also be the Gift the poem speaks of. Aaravos removed it himself (love makes you weak?), gave it to his chosen human, chosen human died, and he was locked out of Startouch realm as a combined result. This offers the clearest connection between why Aaravos' mirror has the nature motif and why Aaravos is crying in the beginning of 6x01.
It was removed by the Startouch elves and lost/hidden, forcing Aaravos to be away from his old home until he could find it again. This is the clearest explanation as to why the Key might be relevant on a plot level. It could give him the power up he needs to get out of his prison and barring that, it's what he needs to wreck havoc and gain access to the Startouch elves to get revenge on them
It also allows what we learn of the cube in 2x06 to have multiple meanings:
The Key is revealed in an episode called The Heart of a Titan. We're led to assume that this is just the Magma Titan, and you could perhaps make an argument the dual meaning (just like how Breaking the Seal refers to the letter and the titan's chest) refers to Harrow or Callum's capacity to love. But, given that one of Aaravos' most prominent mythic comparisons is to Prometheus, a literal Titan, well...
"It unlocks something of great power in Xadia" would work equally well if it's a Key literally made from Aaravos, not just to Aaravos. And the past 2 seasons in particular have emphasized over and over again just how powerful and dangerous he is
The salvation and destruction motif that is inherent in the key, ("I just have a feeling this key thing can help me" / "It's the key of Aaravos, no good will come of it") as keys are linked to chains and freedom with the ability to lock and unlock, is rampant in 2x06, as Viren states that Xadia and the Magma Titan "held both the promise of our salvation and threat of our destruction." This goes double for Sarai sacrificing her life to save Viren
And to round back to Viren and his intro, I don't think it's a coincidence that
is one of the first things Aaravos ever says to Viren, particularly when trying to earn Viren's trust. (Nor that Aaravos considers that Zubeia and co. "betrayed" him when "he would lower his guard," just before the imprisonment.) And while Aaravos gains Viren's trust as a political ally here first, it's also clear that he's actually primarily preying upon Viren's deepest emotional desires here as well: to be listened to. To matter.
Viren wasn't listened to by the monarchs around him (Harrow). He wanted to be important (to them). He wanted to matter.
"It is everything to me, to know that I matter. It's all I ever wanted."
Aaravos: Search your heart. There is something you want very badly. (2x09) Zubeia: He was able to give them something they wanted very badly. (4x04)
And that's what Aaravos offered him, with power and knowledge just being the bait. (If you're interested in more detailed thoughts on this aspect of Viren / their dynamic, check out this meta here.)
More to the point, I do lean towards the Key's plot purposes being 1) a power-up that may be needed for him to get out of his mirror and 2) something that likewise allows him to see the other Startouch elves again. After all, the Silvergrove gave each elf a similar kind of key:
But y'know what, let's talk about Rayla now, because
The Missing Piece of Your Heart
As stated earlier, Rayla's letter has a consistent metaphor when it comes to family and loss:
I remember how I felt when my parents left me to join the Dragonguard, like PART OF MY HEART WAS MISSING and I would never feel right again. I thought I hated them when they did that to me. In the beginning, it felt so big and terrible—like raging despair—but, overtime, it became a soft, sweet ache—a reminder of that missing part of my heart. [...] Please don’t let this hurt too much. But, if it does—if you feel that soft aching—know that that piece of your heart isn’t missing. It’s not missing at all, Callum: I’m carrying it with me! Always.
This struck me as interesting when the letter first came out, as it was a departure from most of Rayla's previous heart motif ("My heart for Xadia") and even the one attributed to her one half of her parents ("My heart goes out with this one"). Why have the motif suddenly switch up when it would've worked just as well, or been doubly romantic + a Ruthari parallel, to just have it be the whole heart?
Then season four came out, and I understood, because, well...
Upon her return, Rayla brings back that "missing piece" of "Callum's heart". It's a painful restoration and doesn't run entirely smooth, but in season five in particular we see him be much more like his older, happier self once he's let himself love her again, and how steadfast he is in said love ("To love is simply know this...").
But, in a moment that could've been exclusively about Rayla, nor did it need for Stella's connection to the Star arcanum to be this prominent in the same moment, they choose to likewise highlight Rayla 'bringing home' the missing piece of Aaravos' heart, too.
This symbolism is also consistent with how the key is introduced in the first place, i.e. first thought of because Rayla's drawing in Callum's sketchbook (another gift from Harrow) reminds Callum of it, and her ultimately being the one to retrieve it even once things at the Banther Lodge take a turn towards the south.
Furthermore, we do have reason to believe that Rayla is indeed the 'Key to Callum' in a sense, particularly after 5x08. Just like how a key can both lock and unlock — give freedom or entrapment — Rayla symbolizes a great deal of duality in Callum's life, including but not limited to:
Leading him to primal magic (1x03, 5x08) and dark magic (2x07, 5x08)
Light ("No one can control you or make your choices for you" / Ray of light) and dark ("But the second you see that elf girl in pain, you completely lost yourself" / "Stay safe, and stay in the light. Don't look for me")
Being routinely emphasized in Callum's arc with Aaravos, especially in S4
"Now you're back. That's kind of good, and it's kind of bad" / "You have to hold pain and love in your heart at the same time" / "And when she came back, I was so happy, and so mad at the same time"
Salvation ("Rayla saves people [...] that's what makes her a hero") and destruction (being willing to die / do dark magic for her)
The Ocean arcanum realization being both positive and negative, just as the poem itself takes on a different shape across the season in regards to how Callum views her and how he views himself while being motivated by his love for her / Ezran
“Wow. So [the berries] look identical, but they might kill you or they might save you,” Callum said. “Exactly. Just like me…” Rayla smiled.
—Book One: Sky novelization
If you're interested in a more specific meta on this dichotomy, I recommend this meta written pre-s4 and this more recent one about 5x08 specifically.
I've written before about Rayla have a weird consistency with the cube as well, particularly in her being the primary carrier of its foreshadowing for most of arc 1, with Callum only really doing so in 1x04 and having Rayla pick up the slack the rest of the time:
"It's a toy, a piece from a children's game" (1x04) as well as "It's a glow toy" (1x05) are now literally true as the cube is 1) involved in Aaravos' game and 2) literally glows a bright flashing light circa the 4x04 intro.
"Are you practicing magic or are you losing to Bait at a game of rolly-cubes?" (2x07 right after Callum calls it a key) came to pass, somewhat if not outright, it seems, in 5x08. Callum practices two different magics, Rayla is literal bait in exchange for the glow-toad, and the episode ends with Callum being worried he's potentially losing Aaravos' 'game' so to speak — that he's made himself more vulnerable to the Startouch elf's control.
Two lines of hers regarding the cube that have not yet come to pass are "This doesn't end well for you" (1x05) and "I hope it was worth it to you, putting everyone's lives in danger" (1x04) but I expect that we'll get them soon enough.
Rayla's 'tether' to a the cube does, of course, loop back into the Flowers of Elarion tale, in which there was a fair exchange of beloved for beloved. If the Key does indeed hold Aaravos' heart (and that is still a very big If), whether it would include an actual exchange is still debatable, but it seems inevitable that she would at least play a part. (If you're interested in more thoughts on Rayla + the cube, check out this meta pre-s4.)
Where the game motif gets the most interesting, I think, is where it intersects with the idea Aaravos mentions in 2x09 regarding, "Those who fail tests of love are simple animals," and one of the TDP short stories in particular having one very interesting tidbit:
“My behavior is—?” “—unusual,” Corvus repeated, nodding. “Very unusual. Ever since you started challenging me to all these little games.” Soren squirmed. His pauldrons clanked as his shoulders slumped. “They aren’t games. They’re tests. Ugh…I’m really messing this up.”
Since Rayla is going to have her "My heart for Xadia" undeniably tested, it would make sense if Callum and Aaravos' hearts came into play too, don't you think?
Other Misc Symbolism / Oddities
Last but not least, we have our odds and ends that didn't fit in the other sections, but I thought may be worthwhile to mention anyway.
For starters, we have screencaps (most notably in 3x06) where you can see a visible dip in Aaravos' tiddies chest that indicates something was removed, and it's not just an artificial darkness.
We have Aaravos touching a fist to his heart twice before he bows and indicates that Callum is going to "play" into his hands (remember that game motif?).
We have this shot, which is the exact kind of thing that "crew makes sure the Ocean and Moon runes are most prominently on display in Callum's dark magic dreams to foreshadow him doing dark magic in S5 Ocean for his Moonshadow gf 3 seasons later" would absolutely do and think they're So Funny about. "No gem for star magic" except the one you're unknowingly holding in your hand, am I right?
Finally, we have precedent that dark magic can 'darken' your heart both in show when Amaya passes the light trial ("A human that is pure of heart") and in the graphic novels with Claudia ("Your heart is not yet darkened") which allows her to see the map to a unicorn (The Puzzle House).
@self-spaghettification also noted that the bright white flash of the star in the 'o' of Aaravos' name in the Arc 2 intro momentarily looks like and makes the shape of the Nova Blade, which is also very cool.
Honourable mention to Rayla going "it's a piece from a children's game" and Ezran going "you said each of the archdragons had a piece of the puzzle" and the Orphan Queen and Jailer presumably working together to trap Aaravos. I think about that shit every day.
Evidence to the Contrary / Alternatives
But like I said at the start, there are plenty of alternatives or feasible pitfalls to consider. This theory resides on a few assumptions after all, that may not be true, such as Aaravos not actually needing the key for anything other than as a lure for Callum, it could purely have something to do with the Nova Blade and nothing to do with the prison, or even have something to do with the nature of magic itself, capable of great good as well as great evil.
His chest piece could've always been more immaterial and dark magic has just darkened it rather than it being removed. Aaravos may have stabbed Laurelion in order to use that heart diamond to partially make the Relic Staff he passed onto Ziard, or Aaravos' chest piece could be in the staff itself, and the cube is something else entirely.
Conclusion
In the end, as we go forward into S6 all the above is more less my personal bet as to where I think we really could go in terms of answering a lot of these questions we've had for a few seasons now. I hope you enjoyed reading the theory and considering (and possibly subscribing to) it, as well as getting your own thoughts stimulated. If any of the above happens I will cry for days and no matter what, I am deeply intrigued to see where S6 takes Aaravos' backstory and, of course, his cube. Luckily:

Spoilers for the Dragon Prince Season 4 and beyond.
My collated notes of all the hints about what is coming up in the Dragon Prince, from interviews, AMA, ComicCon panels. Updated with stuff from Through the Moon.
There will be 7 seasons of 9 episodes each total and possibly some side projects. The story will be in three arcs with a time skip between the arcs. Books 4 & 5 makes up the next arc, which may be called the Mystery of Aaravos. Book 4 is Earth.
Side projects have been confirmed to all be part of canon and include a video game set in Xadia, an tabletop RPG game called Tales of Xadia, a possible feature film of the Orphan Queen and a possible side story set during the reign of Sol Regem featuring Sir Phineas the Cursed and his travelling companion an elf professor Delilah Geel (Who wrote the Secrets of Xadia book).
The video game was in play testing in October 2020, and Wonderstorm was still hiring staff to work on it. After S3 came out they said there was going to be an announcement about the game in 2020, but things may have been delayed due to Corvid.
Through the Moon graphic novel is set between seasons 3 and 4. It feature’s Rayla, Callum and Ezran having returned to Katolis and receiving a request from Lujanne to go the Moon Nexus for a ritual at new moon and bring Phoe-Phoe’s ghost feather. While there Rayla seizes the opportunity to use the lake’s power as a portal between life and death to try an answer the questions that have been plaguing her about the fate of her parents, Runaan and whether Viren is truly dead.
There will also be a second graphic novel set between seasons 4 & 5.
Reminder - stuff said in interviews, AMA & so forth is subject to the team changing their mind when it comes to actually putting stuff in the show or books. They’re still planning things out. So take things as “the current idea is this, but we’ll see how it pans out”
There’s no word on how long the time skip between season 3 and 4 will be, however, Through the Moon starts 3 days before new moon and S3 ended 2 days after full moon, which is only 11 days. About 17 days pass in TTM. The Tales of Xadia TRPG is also going to fit in between these season too. AE said a vague ‘lots of weeks.’
Season 4 will include the hero trio trying to address how to heal and start to change things in the world, however there are scars history has left that will impede them. Aaravos will bring those scars to bear, though the creator did say that Aaravos himself didn’t cause those scars, he ‘brought it out’ in the people who did.
There’s a big theme of understanding what’s happened in the past and how it affects what’s happening now. Questioning what their fore-bearers have done, admitting fault and forgiving mistakes. (BTW, this is on both human and Xadian sides).
“Ezran is the key to everything.” Ezran’s empathic ability will allow him to play a role in the world no other can as he can connect to non-human beings. Though the circumstances of S1-3, who his parents are and his strong compassion, Ezran is in a unique position to cause real change.
Callum will learn more Sky magic spells well as obsessing to work a connection to another arcanum - he is dedicated to being the best mage he can be. Callum will always have a conflict between what do you want to do with magic and what will you do for magic. One hint given is that Callum cannot perform healing with his Sky magic. On an Instragram Live AE admitted he was trolling a bit, but said a betting person would pick Callum being the first human archmage. On an AMA there was a hint that historically there may have been elves that learned a second arcanum. (However, interview stated Aaravos’ mastery of all the primals is just him - he’s special).
Callum’s ‘destiny’ is tied in with the Key of Aaravos Rune Cube. It will be very important coming up. The Key is being pulled towards a location in Xadia. The closer it is to the location, the stronger the pull. (Reminder - it previously belonged to Aaravos and unlocks a great power in Xadia). In Callum’s Spellbook it says that once Zym has been returned Callum intends to find out what the Key does and make Harrow proud.
Writers have been very cagey about whether Callum being able to learn an arcanum means other humans can. “Callum learning Primal magic means that Callum learned Primal Magic.”
They’ve referred to him as the first human to learn an arcanum. However, another interview indicates that humans may have been able to connect to the primal sources in the past - thus Callum relearned something that has been forgotten for over a thousand years
Are non-magical species able to evolve into one that can use magic?
JR: There have been humans long in the past that could have AE: Yeah, right JR: They’re like [waves hand], but modern day he’s a phenomena. Like nothing is done like this no longer. AE: Yeah, I mean if Callum is developing the ability to do Primal magic do you believe that Callum is special because he’s the only human who’s able to do it or do you believe that that Callum is special because he’s the first human in forever to realise it is possible for humans. You know that kind of a little bit the question - I mean he’s special either way and right, but is he special because he’s realising that that maybe those limitations weren’t true or is he an exception to to this limitation.
Cartoon Universe interview
Though they did point out there’s not been much incentive in the last 1000 years for humans to learn Primal magic, given that Dark magic is both easier to use and more powerful.
Rayla will have an inner conflict about her future as a Moonshadow elf that she needs to figure out. Including how being friends with humans and wanting to be a protector rather than the assassin she was raised to be will affect her relationships with her people. (Plus, the whole being ghosted and ghosted parents issue needs to be addressed). Update info from TTM: Rayla ends TTM by going on a quest by herself to locate Viren. Her clues are the Storm Spire, a cave and... a giant cocoon.
There is an unspecified but important storyline involving Runaan. But the coins will get addressed at some point. The coins would require very powerful magic to release the trapped elves and it may not be possible for Primal magic. However, Viren is capable of releasing people he has coined. Also, Rayla knows something happened to her parents, but doesn’t specifically know about the coins. Viren showed Rayla a pouch and mentioned adding her to his collection. AMA answer suggests Callum didn’t see what Viren did in the history spell - he just know Viren did something to Rayla’s parents. TtM seems to confirm Callum’s spell didn’t show that part. Whether Gren saw Runaan in the coin seems up to debate - in the novel he knew Viren used magic on Runaan came out holding something small, like a button or coin. (PS. They also confirmed Runaan slew Harrow, and Harrow is dead dead).
Soren has a complicated future ahead of him as he’s lost the only support system he’s known his whole life. He has a lot to learn and many places to go.
Claudia is going to get a lot worse and there’s a long way to go for her, though they did hint that there’s hope for her in the end. Her motivation is love and family, not power. However, she is willing to go to great sacrifices for her family... Also, her hair will get whiter.
“When we get back to her in Season 4, there is some amazing stuff, just in the first few episodes, which by the way are also funny and quirky and all the things we’ve come to love about the character, but she becomes a very critically important driving force of the narrative in Season 4.”
Inverse interview.
It will be explained in S4 how Claudia was able to perform the resurrection spell. It hasn’t been used previously because she either a) didn’t know it - as in Aaravos taught her it - or b) didn’t have what was necessary to cast the spell.
The story about how Claudia managed to find a supposedly extinct for a 1000 years unicorn and capture it will be addressed in S6.
According to Claudia’s VA - Racquel Belmonte - Claudia will likely have a protege dynamic with Aaravos. She will change her mind a bit on disliking all elves and open up a bit on seeing Viren’s connection to Aaravos.
They have a backstory about why Viren treats Soren so harshly compared to Claudia (though he’s manipulative of both), though it’s not indicated when this backstory will be shown. New info from the book said that Viren used dark magic to save Soren from dying of an illness. This ravished his appearance and whatever he did scared his wife, Lissa, into leaving him. Also Viren wanted a son who would carry on his path and is disappointed Soren isn’t like him. Viren feels some resentment towards Soren that he refuses to acknowledge.
AMA confirmed that Lissa will not be making an appearance in S4 or 5. There is a possibility she may be included in S6, but it’s just a potential idea. Early mage fam life involving Lissa will come up in the novels. (BTW she currently lives in Del Bar and was in no danger from the smoky assassin as she has nothing to do with the leadership of Del Bar)
Viren became a bit of a card carrying villain in season 3, however in season 4 & 5 some of the complexities behind his actions will be revealed. (His VA said that Viren had understandable reasons in S1 & 2, but was a villain in S3, however, he’s happy with how S4 & 5 will develop Viren. Also he gave a strong hint that Viren will have a kind of “fresh start” thing going on, and “do a 180″, and his story is apparently kinda wild).
Viren and Aaravos: Viren didn’t take Runaan’s warning that “you found something worse than death” seriously enough. Viren is ‘in hot water’ in his dealings with Aaravos. The question over time would be - “Wait, am I making my own choices or am I being led to choices you wanted me to make, Aaravos?”
This current era will be known as the Return of Aaravos. Apparently in S4 & 5 Aaravos is going to be very... mysterious. In fact the arc could be called The Mystery of Aaravos.
“The next two seasons are about understanding who Aaravos was, who they thought Aaravos was, how they realized what was happening, and imprisoned him.”
This is tied into the Orphan Queen storyline, for more info see this post. Parts of this storyline will feature in flashbacks S4 onwards.
A lot of Aaravos’ motivation comes from a relationship he had with a character whose name is featured on the map from the novel. (Candidates are Skall’s Hook, Ruins of Elarion, Mount Kalik and Eboreus. They said on a Q&A that Elarion wasn’t referring to a person, just the city).
Aaravos has a speech coming up in S5 that explains about the history of magic and why he’s interested in humans. Summed up - Over 5000 years ago there was only one kind of magic, deep magic, and it was very difficult to wield, then something happened that split magic into the 6 Primals Source and gave every creature and plant a connection to one of the 6 Primal Sources, which were much more practical magics. Except humans.
When asked what was coming out of the cocoon an interviewer gave “Aaravos’ physical form” and some jokes options. Ehasz replied, “I’m gonna say none of the… well, I’m not gonna say.” TtM update: In the world between life and death the cocoon held a corrupted version of Viren - a month after Viren was resurrected at the end of S3. Rayla says Viren is caught between life and death, but in the living world.
Janai is Queen Khessa’s heir, so she should be the next Sunfire Queen. Janai also has a brother. (Sunfire elves also have a Light Being form with healing powers that’s even rarer than the beserker Heat Being form. This fact has come up a couple of times so they’re likely going to introduce a character with this form - could be Janai’s brother).
Janai will find out that Aaravos whispered something in Khessa’s ear before he killed her.
Also on Amaya and Janai:
Also, they did a reveal page for Janai's mount, a Twin-Tailed Inferno-Toothed Tiger, with some interesting info. These flying firecats are believed to only tolerate those of pure-heart and aggressive to those of ill-intent. You can't give a factoid like that and not use it somewhere.
Tales of Xadia will feature storyline content that bridges the gap between Season 3 and the newly-announced Season 4 of The Dragon Prince,” according to Fandom’s press release. “Players can explore the ruins of Lux Aurea, try to restore the corrupted Sunforge, and fight to stop the spread of the evil monstrosities it radiates. This off-screen story will come alive in game supplements—as well as in organized play events—prior to Season 4’s release.
Forbes
Sol Regem will be in season 4. (No character makes me think of “scars of the past” more than this character. He is not going to be interested in reconciliation between Xadia and humanity).
There will be a new elf character - Terry the Earthblood elf. Has similar powers to Toph from Avatar tLA and is said to be very funny. For reference this Earthblood elf is from Callum’s Spellbook;
Also a new dragon in season 4 - Rex Igneous (Fire King) the Earth Archdragon, who lives underground but comes up every hundred years. He’s appeased by food he hasn’t tried before (looking at Ezran and his jelly tart habit here);
They mentioned that both Earthblood and Tidebound elves will be introduced in seasons 4 & 5.
There’s another archdragon who has been mentioned at SDCC and in the novel, Luna Tenebris, who reigned between Sol Regem and Avizandum.. Ehasz said that the end of her reign is being explored in S4, but no current intentions to explore the beginning.
JR mentioned that the territory of the Skywing elves will be visited at some point, and how having a small portion of the population that has wings, and a even smaller population that can magically manifest wings, has an affect on their culture. (The three types apparently have different outlooks - with winged elves being known for moving on when they don’t care to deal with things).
They’ve mentioned a character that will be introduced in the video game will make it into the show. AE & JR were talking about how they were currently writing stuff for S5 and how this character just got their moment, so I think this character is due in S5.
Core novel Book 2: Sky will introduce a very important Dark Mage character not yet featured on the show.
Also, as a tidbit from AE - there’s a scene in S5 where someone makes a sacred promise to Bait.
Sarai will feature in the show again. AMA confirmed Callum’s father is “fully human.” His father may come up in the novels.
In the novel new lore about unicorns was introduced. This lore will be incorporated into the show at some point.
The reactions to elf/human romantic relationships will be a thing.
Aanya will be featured again. Ezran and Aanya will be friends.
Queen Fareeda of Evenere actually survived the smokey assassin’s attack - she just went missing for a bit. Her story may come up later on.
Captain Villads and Berto are likely to be featured again, but not confirmed.
They do have some stories about Callum’s father they want to tell, but it’s likely to be in books rather than making it into the show.
Crow Master has scenes coming up. The Crow Lord is real but that’s all they’re gonna say.
Some very epic beings will eat jelly tarts in the show.
And a finishing note to put the fear in you - possible major character death.
PS. It has been confirmed that Rayla, Callum, Zym (and Bait) are the main characters for all seven seasons, so this leaves... Soren, Claudia, Viren and Amaya.

How Primal Magic Works
The Dragon Prince introduces a rich, nuanced world to the audience, so its only natural that its main magical system--Primal Magic--is similarly complex. But because of that, it gets frequently misunderstood, and many of the rules for how it works remain a mystery.
Dark Magic, from what we’ve seen, is a pretty familiar brand of magic, especially to Western audiences. With incantations, sacrificing creatures, and mystical spells, Dark Magic appears to be reminiscent of many of the tropes seen in witchcraft, alchemy, potions, and Harry Potter-esqe Dark Arts.
But Primal Magic is a different story. Primal Magic is influenced by both Western styles of magic--runes and “draconic” (which is primarily latin)--as well as Eastern styles of magic, primarily with concepts such as Qi.
Qi (or Ki/Chi) is a metaphysical “life force” energy, and is a fundamental component for Daoist medicine and martial arts. While Primal Magic isn’t exactly like Qi, I think understanding this concept gives us a great framework for understanding Primal Magic.
To begin, even though Qi means “vital energy,” it literally translates into “air” or “breath.” Not too different from how aspiro translates to “I breathe wind,” or how Callum only truly learns the Sky Arcanum after understanding that:
Sarai: “Sometimes things can get so complicated, that our minds can’t quite sort them out alone. But when you slow down and let yourself breathe, your spirit and your body can catch up with your mind, and help out.”
While Qi is something inherent to every living creature, it works in tandem with “heaven” Qi (rain, sun, and sky) and “earth” Qi (plants, soil, and land). In truth, one’s own Qi is contained within and flows from “heaven” and earth,” as it cannot survive without them.
Again, not unlike how Callum realizes that:
Callum: “Rayla, the whole world is like a giant primal stone, and we’re inside it. I’m inside Sky Magic, but it’s also in me, with every breath I take.”
Indeed, in the Dragon Prince, magic is everywhere. Both Rayla and Lujanne have talked about Primal Energy as existing in all parts of the world, even if some Primal Sources may be stronger or weaker in certain places and times. Much like how with Daoism, one can begin to master Qi by understanding how it surrounds and subsumes them, a mage can begin to master Primal Magic with the realization that this energy is everwhere, around and within them.
This knowledge is best described as:
Sarai: “To know something truly and deeply, you must know it with your head, hand, and heart. Mind, body, and spirit.”
But of course, there’s more to it than that. Qi has several practices. Three that are most relevant here are Qigong, Li, and Neijing.
Qigong (or “life-energy culvivation”) is a series of practices for cultivating and balancing one’s Qi. It includes practices such as mediation.
Coordinated and rhythmic breathing.
Slow, deliberate, and stylized movements.
But above all, Qigong involves having a mindful state, awareness, and a visualization of guiding one’s Qi. Using Sarai’s statement that true and deep knowledge requires “Mind, Body, and Spirit,” Qigong most resembles Mind.
Next, we have Li and Neijing, two interelated forces used in Daoist martial arts, which are best discussed together. Li refers to using tangible, physical force, such as that produced by muscles, strength of bones, speed, and timing. This can be cultivated the way most people would guess--weight lifting, exercise, and so on. Li most resembles Body.
Neijing, on the other hand, refers to the extend that one can exercise one’s internal will to harness and direct their Qi. Over time, according to Daoism, one can learn to manipulate the flow of their life energy. With Li, you can improve your physical condition, but sooner or later you will pass the age of your prime, and this force will likewise diminish over time. Neijing, on the other hand, can be cultivated and contiunally grown for as long as you live. For this reason, Neijing most represents Spirit.
And again, we see these concepts in the Dragon Prince through the elven mages the trio meet.
First, they meet Lujanne, and eldery (sorry, “cool grandma age”) Moonshadow mage. She’s quite spry, and seems to be physically active (just ask Callum how hard it is to keep up with her). Yet, it’s clear she’s not as young as she used to be, so for the most part, she remains close to the Moon Nexus, away from the action.
However, because of her age, she’s had many years to cultivate her Primal connection, and as a result, her magic is powerful even if her body is not. Lujanne is able to cast illusions even without needing to cast spells. She can reshape the entire Caldera to appear to be monster-infested, or create a powerful spell on Ava’s fourth limb that persists for years.
Next, the trio meet Ibis, who is on the other side of the spectrum. He’s much younger, and even though he’s a powerful mage, we don’t see him perform the same level of nonverbal magical feats that Lujanne did.
However, it’s clear he’s not lacking in the physical department...
Ibis, unlike Lujanne, is more likely to rely more on his physical prowess; he conjures mage wings and takes flight, something that clearly takes a great deal of physical strength.
Lujanne, however, has a strong enough connection to her Primal that she doesn’t even need to draw runes to channel magic. Even so, both of their magic requires a combination of physical action/motion and willpower to perform. So, Ibis and Lujanne together help show how necessary both the Body and the Spirit, as well as the Mind, are for mages to perform magic.
Primal Magic is dependant on the physical ability of the user; when Callum casts an aspiro, he may need to draw a rune and say the trigger word, but the spell also depends on Callum’s ability to continuously blow air to work properly. On a more fundamental level, magic requires motion in order to be performed--mages draw runes with their hands and arms, Moon rituals are done through dancing, and mage wings require the mage to apply their back, shoulders, and chest to generate thrust to actually fly.
And this may all explain why it is that, as many other have pointed out, spellcasting for Primal Magic seems to resemble martial arts. And that’s because on some level it is martial arts.
Just like how Qi is a fundamental component for Chinese kung fu, mastering Primal Magic parlays well into hand-to-hand combat. Well enough that, when Rayla has fun in making up neat Sky spells, they frequently sound like martial art moves (”tornado punch”; “lightning lash”).
We’re definitely only scratching the surface when it comes to Primal Magic. We will continue too learn more about it, particularly through Callum’s journey as a mage. But I think Primal Magic’s Daoist influences, which are often overlooked, help explain what we’ve seen so far. They may even help show where Callum’s magical pursuits may take him.

The Dragon Prince Rewatch Thoughts and Ideas About the Future
Since season 3 is right around the corner I have decided to rewatch the first 2 seasons of the dragon prince. And the show was better upon a rewatch than I remember it being. Knowing certain things that are going to happen changes how you read scenes near the beginning and allows you to notice the seeds for future events or character choices. There is a scene in the second episode, before we are told of Rayla’s fear and dislike of water, where she is determined to set her mistakes right and she gets to a river and hesitates, gathers her berrings, and then crosses. This scene is only a couple of seconds long, if that, but you can tell that she is wary of water even before you’re told. There are plenty more moments like this and it astounded me while I was watching.
The pacing also feels better while rewatching. When I first saw the dragon prince I remember thinking the pacing felt off. In some moments it was really fast while others it was really slow. I’m typically not that affected by pacing, but there were certain moments that I felt needed more time to develop that were rushed through and some that were given too much time that weren’t that important to the story. I still think that some moments were rushed, but the slower moments fit a lot better now. For example when I first watched season 1 I was genuinely surprised that it ended at episode 9. It didn’t feel like a finale at the time, but going immediately into season 2 felt a lot more organic.
Now to get into talking about my thoughts on the show as a whole. And my predictions for the future.
Characters:
Rayla- Rayla is my personal favorite character. Our introduction to her manages to showcase the characteristics of her that will become the driving force of the story, her compassion which clashes with her mission and immense skill. It only takes a single scene to set up her most important characteristics to the story. It was interesting to learn how her culture affects the way she sees herself and the people around her. And how it lead to her negatively viewing herself because compassion and fear are frowned upon. She also didn’t just get over her bias against humans. Her view changes gradually and her decision to travel with the princes didn’t come from her being more enlightened than other elves, but from her unique set of circumstances with her past and inner conflict. The writing of Rayla managed to impress me yet again while watching the show. I couldn’t believe that they managed to create a character that was able to organically kick start the plot without neglecting the societal biases that would affect her character. I believe Rayla is a really well written character that has a lot of potential to grow. We will probably get to explore a lot of it in season 3. I hope to get her backstory and a greater expansion of Moonshadow elf culture now that her and Callum are in Xadia.
Callum- Callum really becomes a great character in season 2. Season 1 felt like it was setup for his character and season 2 was the season where he actually got to shine. His insecurities and disposition made for an interesting, yet predictable, starting point that was enhanced by how well it juxtaposed with Rayla’s insecurities and personality. They used it to create an interesting dynamic between the two. This insecurity lead to him gaining an intense focus on magic, because it was the first thing he felt he excelled at, until he finally learns how to perform it without a primal stone or resorting to dark magic. This also lead to a juxtaposition between him and Claudia, which I have no doubt will be explored more in depth later. Claudia is falling farther and farther down the hole that is dark magic and becoming over reliant on its “quick fix” nature, while Callum is taking the long path to learning primal magic which seems to be a safer, longer term fix than dark magic. Callum is a character I find the most interesting when he is mirroring other characters. He manages to put the journeys of others into a different perspective.
Claudia and Soren- These are the characters, other than Rayla, that I think will benefit the most from season 3. There is a lot of setup with their relationship between their father, the princes, and each other. They seem to be set up to take different paths within the third season to either follow their father or find some sort of redemption. Soren is the one with the most interesting relationship to their father in that, while Claudia ultimately seems to care more for her brother’s well being than their father’s opinion of her as shown with her decision to save Soren not the “egg” during her moment of truth, Soren wants so badly to make their father proud that when he’s paralyzed he’s happy because now he can’t do the bad things he felt he had to do to make his father proud. This moment changed the way I saw his character. He no longer seemed mean spirited or “evil”. And it lead to me believing that he could be heading toward a path of redemption where he eventually breaks free of his father’s influence. Claudia on the other hand has relied more and more on dark magic to where she will find herself at a crossroads where she will acknowledge the negative aspects of dark magic and choose either to continue down the rabbit hole or reject it. I want to believe that Claudia will make the decision to reject dark magic, but I have the feeling that Claudia and Soren will find themselves on separate paths where Soren will reject their father and try to save Claudia from herself and Claudia will continue down her path of dark magic and by association down the path of her father’s acceptance, at least initially. She is characterized as someone who cares a lot about the people close to her and she will do anything for them, so I think in the end she will make the right choice unless something drastic happens.
Ezran- The final member of our trio. He’s the character who’s future I’m the least sure of/have the least ideas of where it can go. He’s finally grown enough to stop running from his problems like he did so many times before, but he hasn’t shown an affinity for leading, mostly due to his young age, which leads me to believe he won’t hold the throne for very long in season 3. Ezran running from his problems and him liking hide and seek become sort of intertwined. In the first episode Ezran plays hide and seek with Bait and later runs away to hide in the secret tunnels in the castle when Callum harshly told him the truth about the moonshadow assassins. Later in season 2 he plays hide and seek with Bait and Zym while Callum and Rayla are defending the dragon, which he realizes was a bad idea when he can’t find Zym. He later “runs” away after learning the truth about his father’s death, but actually goes to talk with Claudia to go back and take the throne. The realization that hide and seek was a bad idea can be paralleled with his realization that he can’t run and hide from his responsibilities like he tried to before. Him actually playing hide and seek with someone other than Bait, who is easily found, made him realize that “hiding” actually created more problems, possibly losing Zym, than it solved, combating boredom. This was an interesting parallel I found on my second rewatch that once again hints at what is going to happen before it actually happens.
Story:
The dragon prince is a show that finds its basis in darker themes such as the cycles of war and vengeance, societal bigotry, that neither side is entirely just in war, etc. These are all heavy themes that the dragon prince handles surprisingly well. The pilot episode alone shows all of these things directly and doesn’t shy away. It ends with King Harrow and all the elven assassins but Runnan dead with Rayla, Callum, and Ezran on the run in hopes that while they have lost today they may be able to stop future all out war if they manage to accomplish a near insurmountable task with everyone seemingly against them. There isn’t a victory, just a quiet desperation that they must succeed later. This is very different from most animated shows aimed at the same demographic. This starts out dark and then gets lighter then slowly becomes even darker than before. Shows I’ve seen this compared to like Avatar: the Last Airbender, the Legend of Korra, etc all had much lighter pilot episodes before delving into much darker territory. This sets the bar right out of the gate. The story does a much better job than a lot of cartoons I’ve seen at dealing with the messiness of war. Both the humans and elves have done bad things in the name of “justice” and the show acknowledges this instead of naming a side that is “right”. This is rare in shows that thrive off of good vs evil. With the dragon prince no one seems truly evil. Even with Viren, who is the closest to a big bad this show has, is steeped in shades of grey. This is the major thing that sets the dragon prince apart from its contemporaries. The basic premise of the story is pretty straightforward and something that has been done before, but the way it does it is unique.
It’s a bit hard to put into words all the things I think about the dragon prince, but this is my best stab at it. It looks like the dragon prince will continue to raise the stakes with this upcoming season and become darker and more morally nuanced with the upcoming season. I’m really excited for season 3 to release and hope it manages to continue the great things that it has done with its previous two seasons

Hey Leo! Sorry for the random questions but do you recommend The Dragon Prince? Is it about the dragons or are they like background lore or something? Thanks!
Short answer: hell yeah,, it’s so much fun!! Give it a try if you love fantasy adventure stuff. Long answer:
DRAGONS ARE MY FAVORITE THING EVER SO I WILL TELL YOU THAT I ABSOLUTELY CAME CAUSE I HEARD “DRAGON” AND “PRINCE” AND “DRAGON PRINCE” AND THAT SEEMED TO SUIT MY VERY SPECIFIC INTERESTS,,, there’s a lot of lore and they seem to be more or less the ruling forces of Xadia, the land of magic and elves. But they’re definitely not just a backdrop piece, they’re major players! Sadly we don’t get to see as much dragon action in the first season, but the entire focus of the main trio is to protect a dragon that’s a royal heir, the eponymous “Dragon Prince.”
And so,, bit of a spoiler, but you DO get to actually meet the Dragon Prince in the series,, they hatch right before season 2 and become one of the traveling companions of the main trio. They’re the cutest little baby dragon!! Again, I’m sorry for the spoiler, but if I say like…there’s a dragon companion Eventually and you know that episode 1 introduces a dragon egg, like…it’s kinda hard to talk about without giving away, and DP certainly didn’t shy away from advertising Baby Dragon in all the promo stuff for season 2 so I figure you’ll run into it anyway. And we see glimpses of other dragons as the episodes go by, and they all exude this sense of absolute awe and power. So if you came for the dragons,, there will!! Be!! Dragons!!
But what else is at the forefront–even more so than the dragons? One of my other favorite things in all of fantasy ever. ELVES,, and lots of them!! All elves–and indeed, all the magical creatures native to Xadia–are born with an innate connection to something called an arcanum, which is a kind of really cool elemental magic!! The writers of Dragon Prince are some of the people that splintered off from the Avatar series after Last Airbender (so they were uninvolved with Korra, but part of the original series). And you can definitely see that in the influence of a lot of the lore and world building.
Each race of elves having their own affinity for a particular arcanum is definitely going to be reminescent of the whole bender thing. These arcanum are also known as “Primal Sources,” because they’re kind of this mystical, primordial energy that controls the natural forces of the universe. So you have:
Moon Arcanum (Moonshadow Elves: value loyalty and their oaths above all else, honorable, mystical, withdrawn, spiritual, duplicitous, illusionists, assassins, conditioned to never show fear)
Sun (Sunfire Elves: masters of the forge, unparalleled craftsmanship in their weapon and armor smithing, destructive, nurturing, charismatic, passionate, can invoke either a “rage” based state to rampage with increased strength and speed, or harness their “light” in order to heal)
Sky (Skywing Elves: Keen minded, clever, value their freedom and autonomy above all else, gifted with flight)
Earth (Earthblood Elves: Patient, steadfast, stubborn, introspective, inquisitive, very in-tune with the balance of the natural world, value harmony and discovery)
Ocean (don’t know what these elves are called still,, rip,,, but: Peaceful, empathetic, deeply connected to others, forge intimate bonds, adaptable, versatile)
Star (Startouch Elves: very rare, elusive, have a vast concept of time and space as seen through the lens of infinite cosmos, gifted in divination, posses ancient magic and potential secrets of the universe)
The main conflict of the show is actually between the humans and the elves. They used to all live together, but then humans betrayed the others through the creation of dark magic, a sort of “cheat” since humans aren’t born naturally connected to any of the Primal Sources. Since they’re cut off from the arcanum, they saw their only viable means of practicing magic as sacrificing other magical beings to draw from their life force. This can be anything from crushing bugs to ritual use of phoenix feathers, and even killing dragons. So that’s how you get the alleged “sixth arcanum,” Dark Magic. And honestly, lots of Magical Creatures weren’t a Big Fan of that. Humans eventually went to war with the elves and dragons, and!! Yes!! They lost. And got driven out of Xadia.
Dragon Prince takes place sometime later, and is essentially about heightening tensions between humans and elves, and likely, the very inevitable impending war. There are numerous human kingdoms, each with their own politics, as well as everything we’ve yet to discover about the interrelationships between differing arcanum elves. The series features two human princes trying to navigate their role in society and expectations for the future alongside the emerging threat of war and disconcerting realization that Xadia isn’t quite as sinister as they thought. There’s also their new friend Rayla, a Moonshadow Elf and trained assassin–who has decided to grudgingly open up her heart, and maybe give humanity a chance (I love her). You also have the obligatory Dark Magic sorcerer with his own agenda and secrets. Not to mention his jock son and dark magic daughter, who are honestly both so quirky, endearing, complex, and can just steal the show.
I also have to mention General Amaya!! She’s the general of one of the human kingdom armies, and she’s also mute. All her soldiers communicate with her in sign language (and it’s actually correctly animated ASL!!). Everything about the way this character was brought to life was so amazing and, not knowing anything about her beforehand, I was so pleasantly surprised by her strength, charm, chivalry–she’s amazing. And it’s clear that considerable research and effort went into representation here.
Other reasons to watch include one of my personal favorites,, Hot Elves,, you’ve got both Runaan and Aaravos here and they’re all I can focus on whenever they’re onscreen. They both own my heart and soul and they’re 100% perfect I’m very thankful I can always look forward to them,,
Unfortunately, I can talk about how much I like Dragon Prince all I want, but I also have to definitely mention there’s a relationship between two queer characters in a flashback of season 2, and they’re both killed off soon after their introduction. That left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. I’ve seen people “compare” it to Voltron, try to claim it did things “better,” but that’s honestly all ridiculous. Not to mention, VLD’s LGBT rep was always meant to be Shiro, and he was still around, whereas TDP introduced two minor LGBT characters and then proceeded to kill off their only LGBT characters an episode later. This isn’t me trying to complain or start a fight or anything, but it’s a matter that raises valid concerns and was understandably upsetting for people, so I feel like it’s fair to warn anyone going into it.
As a whole, I do love TDP though. Really, the fun here is in the characters and charm of the series. It’s also really not a show that takes itself too seriously, which is kinda nice. A lot of people have said it was too childish for them, which I can understand, but the whole thing feels very storybook and endearing to me. There’s also certainly layers of nuance there, with political games, duplicitous motivations, usurping kings, self-sacrifice, betrayal, the grieving process, how far you’d go for someone you love–I think there’s definitely some substance to it. I’d recommend that most people at least give it a chance to see if it’s their thing. And if you do, I hope you enjoy it

Dragonic Musings: A Squiggle Meister’s Blunt Ramblings about The Dragon Prince S2.
So I just wrapped up watching S2 of The Dragon Prince and I’m going to be blunt:
///SPOILERS FOR THE DRAGON PRINCE S2 AHEAD///
#1: How is it that this series is able to fit so much into just 9 episodes without feeling rushed? It tells a lot needed for the season but still leaves enough to keep me wanting more episodes. The writing in this series is sooo good.
#2: Queen Anya, you go girl! I actually clapped for this character. This girl don’t play. Your queen mommas didn’t birth no fool. I also loved how they handled the backstory about the three queens; three mothers who went down as legends fighting to aid their kingdoms and their people. I don’t know how the LGBT community is going to react to TDP’s representation with the two queens. The last time we got a Netflix series created by people who originally worked on A:TLA and had same-sex lovers who died, it wasn’t well-received. So for what it’s worth, I hope there wasn’t any backlash of any kind.
The Dragon Prince thus far has been really good with handling its diverse cast of characters and the storytelling for this show is as sweet as a jumbo jelly tart. It’s that good. At least to me.
#3: Whoever creates the artwork used in the credits for The Dragon Prince---I love you. I mean, the whole production team at Wonderstorm and cast of this series has my love but I wanted to spot light the credits artist because I love how TDP adds a little something extra in the credits.
#4: Can someone please free the precious Strawberry Boi? His captivity for S1 was cute but now in S2, he needs to be set free. Free him.
#5: Speaking of Strawberry Boy, dear The Dragon Prince, how many husbandos are you going to keep giving me? I mean you already gave me Runaan, Strawberry Boy, Ezran’s new smexilious bodyguard---a beautiful chocolate man, yes. Loving all these wonderful flavours of husbandos that TDP is spoiling me with, yes and yes. But I already had my hands full with the beautiful husbandos we got from Book 1. Now after Book 2, there is Aaravos and might I say…HOT DIGGITY GIGGITY DAMN! Aaravos, you can whisper in my ear through a magical purple worm headset any day. It’s bad enough that he’s another sexy elf husbando (why) but his voice---oh my stars, his voice. His voice slicker than melted caramel drizzling on ice-cream. I should not like this man…but I do. I GIGGITY DIGGITY DIG THIS DUDE! How can one so evil be so fine? Why you do this to me, TDP?
#6: All things considered, I’m happy to see that Viren has found himself a new man after King Harrow. Good for you! Not good for everybody else but good for you Viren.
#7: Claudia, Claudia, Claudia…I do not hate this girl. As a Rayllum shipper, I understand that Claudia is a thorn in my ship however, that being said, I don’t hate Claudia. As a matter of fact, I want nothing but happiness for my lil witchy girl. I see her going down a dark path that I do not like. No Claudia, you too dorky and pure for the dark side girl. Don’t be like your daddy! I would say Soren needs to save his sister but he need saving too. They both need saving. Can someone adopt these two, please? Can someone GOOD adopt them? I want Claudia and Soren to abandon their dad and just go on their own journey to find their mother. Can that be their story for S3 please? Can we just have Claudia and Soren go find their mother, please. I’m worried for Claudia. She straight up Bambi’s mother that poor deer with magic. Yes she did it to help her brother but, this left me curious about something.
What if, Soren’s rehabilitation is only temporary? What if Claudia will have to keep stealing magic from living things to keep her brother from returning to his own paralysis while damning herself in the process? While that would be good for developing Claudia and Soren’s bond, I don’t want to see this because…I don’t want to see Claudia fall into the same path as her father. However…I think that’s what is being set up and I am worried. My dorky villainous children!
#8: I liked how they handled explaining death to children. That was great how they made that nice parallel between King Harrow telling Callum about his mom and Callum essentially trying to tell Ez about his father. I don’t think Harrow is dead though. His soul is in the green bird isn’t he? The same green bird that got away and will probably meet up with Ez in S3. Cannot wait.
#9: I felt a little bad for Bait this season. It looked almost as if Ezran had replaced him with Zym. It wasn’t like that at all since Ez was only trying to raise Zym. But at least we got to see Bait bond with Callum. That was sweet.
#10: Zym and Ez share a psychic link?! What the what? Okay, we going full Eragon up in this bitch. Okay. I dig it. It’s a way to keep Ez connected to Zym and essentially Callum and Rayla.
#11: As sad as I am to see Ezran go. As much as I’m sad to see the dream team---the dragonic trio split, my pathetic giant Rayllum shipping heart is performing cartwheels and summersaults right now.
Rayla and Callum are going to be travelling alone together (with Zym) for a whole season eh? How perfect ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Especially after that little confession moment from Rayla with Callum. I’m loving where this is going. I’m loving where they’re taking Rayla in terms of her growing ties to Callum. I’m just waiting for our dear boy to catch up.
According to Callum in C2 (I think), he and Rayla aren’t there yet. But fear not, I’m a patient shipper so I shall wait. But boy did I enjoy those little Rayllum breadcrumbs. They be delicious. I ate good for this season. RWBY take notes for RoseGarden.
But yeah, I think that’s it for my thoughts on TDP S2. I enjoyed this season. I had planned on watching it half and half but as soon as I got through the first 4-5 episodes, I couldn’t put it down. I ended up watching the full 9 in one sitting this morning.
To my friends who told me I would love S2, you were right. I did. I am looking forward to seeing how far this story goes. More and more layers to the world of TDP is being brought in and I’m interested to see where it will take the fans. I hope there is going to be a S3 and I hope that it will be a routine where we get a new season once every year. But we’ll see.
Overall, I can’t wait.
