Inej was barely aware of herself as he drew her once more into his arms, his chest rising, falling, brushing against hers with his every laboured breath. He took her chin between his thumb and forefinger, his kiss almost chaste in its tenderness.  She opened her eyes, finding her hands on either side of his face. She felt in a dream, lost in the darkness of his eyes, hypnotised by the harsh angle of his heavy brows, the slightly crooked line of his nose, the sharp contours of cheekbone and jaw. She brushed her fingers across his mouth, testing the fullness of his lower lip, then felt along the edges of his chin and jaw, following the scratch of unshaven skin up to his cheeks. Carefully she let her thumb fan through the heavy fringe of his eyelashes, before she held his face between her palms once more.  This kiss was not long, just a brief press of her mouth to his. It was gentle. It was final.  When she pulled back and took in his furrowed brow, his searching gaze, she knew he felt it.  “Lynx, what’s wrong?”  She had to stop her hand, already halfway reaching to smooth away the little crease between his brows. This she could not fix. And it was time to be brave.  “I can’t do this anymore,” she said. “I can’t… I can’t see you anymore.���
