I Grew Up on Mars
My childhood was unconventional. Lots of people say the exact same thing, right? Many of my family members were very eccentric. I can’t say much more without getting sued for libel. But I guess I could focus on the positives then? Right.
My family has many creative people. My dad is a professional artist, even sketched for the Vancouver police department in forensics assault division, when he was an art student in the ‘70’s. He had a radio show called Rocktalk for 30+ years and a tv show for 7 years called Rockinitis. It’s on YouTube on reruns still. My maternal aunt makes bespoke porcelain dolls. Lots of artists, musicians, dancers, writers, poets, comics and others in my family so in that sense, I fit in. I have always been an ideas person. A storyteller. I make abstract art. Collage. Like a jack of all trades creatively. My drama teacher failed me for not showing up. She didn’t want to. She said she wanted to give me an A and that I was one of the best students she’d had, but had to teach me a hard lesson. “Maybe one day you’ll realize you have talents and get your act together, kid.” Hindsight sucks.
Sometimes the immediacy of one’s own survival negates creative goals. Sometimes survival mode puts artistic pursuits on hold. For 20 years. Then a mid life crisis, or series of crises, wakes you up. And you get mad. Mad at life and mad at yourself. In retrospect it gets better. Life gets better and you move on.

Dear friends
Thank you for your support this year🙏
Art is my passion, and I find inspiration at the most unexpected moments. I have always had a strong sense of curiosity and drive. I often find myself writing and drawing in the dark at night, hoping not to disturb my sleeping wife, as I strive to create even better works each day. Despite turning 44 this year👵, I am fortunate to have the freedom to explore, experiment, and embrace failure in my artistic journey. I constantly seek out new methods, textures, and energy to infuse into my creations. I remain open to new ideas, new perspectives, and new experiences. I am grateful to be in a position where I can seize opportunities and express myself through my art🎨
This year, I have chosen to work with the issue of hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community, which has deeply affected me. I have painted scenarios depicting our everyday lives, places that have witnessed crimes against individuals simply for being true to themselves. These places continue to exist, but perhaps with a sense of strain. My ultimate goal is to foster dialogue and understanding, so that we can grow wiser together and embrace our differences instead of harboring hatred.
As the shortest day of the year approaches, I am reminded that the light will gradually return. Soon, 2023 will come to an end. I want to express my gratitude to all of you for following and supporting me. I cherish every comment, see every like and love every word of encouragement. Sending my love to all of you: friends, followers, fans, collectors, colleagues, partners, my wife, my kids and my cat💞
Thank you for being part of my journey🧗‍♀️
Sincerely
HH

Art, unity and family keep our spirit strong:
Family Portrait of Susan’s family
I would like to share a group of family portrait captured by me for Susan. Unquestionably, images play an important and effective role in passing information. The emotion, the composition, the objects, the colour and the light & shadow construct the picture. One picture can tell a lot. That’s the reason why I am so attracted by photography.
It was such a pleasure for me to shoot this group of portraits of Susan’s family in September 2019. Susan’s family is consisted of herself, her husband Sackey, and their lovely children. They currently live in Australia. Susan is from Australia, and Sackey is from Ghana in West Africa. Both of them are contemporary dancers, which is why they met and fell in love with each other.
Susan told me that Sackey chose to settle down in Australia for marrying her - he has not been home for six years. It was difficult at a time for her because sometimes she can’t understand some of the nuances that make Sackey who he is; however, they’ve chosen to created a family and community with the value of not only the enjoyment of life but also the unity of global humanity.
This family composition conveys the idea that love between human beings is something more powerful than cultural and racial differences.
The happiness, creative, and harmonious life moment created by Susan’s family is a small reflection of the world nowadays, where internationalisation could bring people from different families, countries, and cultures together. From this, the idea of the sense of belonging and global humanity is revealed from the bond between human beings. It reminds us of the essential statue of human beings: we had been developed and will continue to develop together as a whole.
The below is the interview (selected) between me and Susan
How do you enjoy living with someone from a totally different culture?
Well that's interesting. I think when you marry into a family you become part of a community but marrying someone from another country and then they move to your country - there is no community or family with them. So really, I have married an individual who is now separated from his community. This is very difficult at times - it's hard for me to understand some of the nuances that make him who he is and it is lonely for our family without knowing grandparents and uncles and aunts.
However, it is also an opportunity to make a new family and a new community. We really enjoy meeting other families who are similar to ours, live music and festivals which focus on he values of our family - a global humanity, enjoyment of life, unity.
Did life change after having children?
Yes! One was fun, two is so much work! They bring us a lot of joy and it is wonderful to see a human grow from a baby to small children. Our children have made us a family and we are so grateful to them for that. It does make things harder, like traveling but we know it is a short period in life that they are dependent so we are enjoying being in Australia for this time.
There is lots of art in our home, what role does art have in your family?
Creativity is very important to us - Sackey and my ability to use creativity to keep our spirits high and connect others is very important to the way we live. Sackey says 'art keeps our spirit strong' and this is an important skill to pass on to our girls.

Enjoying a morning jam, time and rest before the afternoon. It’s the second last day of our exhibition in Hong Kong and we are overwhelmed with many wonderful moments and heartwarming memories. . Looking back we can just praise God over all and we are deeply thankful. It’s a journey of learning and people taught us a lot about what space they need to dream. So thankful. Thankful to see how people interacted with the space, what they took out and how they changed it to the way they feel comfortable. . It’s like a naivety drawing, you have a empty paper and you give it around, everyone adds his lines, his thoughts, his handwriting too it and it creates a wonderful picture. Thanks for coming and being a part of this big dream! . Open today: 3 - 9 pm (talk about India from 8 - 9 pm) Last day tomorrow 3. Greetings to all hardworking contemporary artists who have their own business👋
After I graduated from the Art Academy, I founded the company Art, Peace & Love. The name was chosen after the three most important things I think a life should contain.
Yesterday my daughter brought me a present, she had painted the company name on a small canvas and put it on a mini easel. The colors were inspired by one of my paintings.
I am so happy, one thing is that my wife and children are proud of me because I am a visual artist, another thing is that they support me and my company.
So remember, when you support living artists, you also support their further journey and life, and you become part of writing art history💞👩‍🎨

My talented brother @rozzi_craftwork just made a new batch of cauldron mugs and they are available now in his shop (link in his profile)! He has been studying ceramics for quite a while now and I always enjoy seeing the new forms and textures he comes up with. Obviously his cauldron mug designs are my favorite. They are fired with a special glaze that resembles cast iron and each mug sits on little cauldron feet! They are really comfortable in your hand, too, which is important when you drink as much tea as me. He only makes these in small batches so get 'em while you can! Check out @rozzi_craftwork for more beautiful wares and very informative posts about the art of ceramics! 🍂 #rozzicraftwork #artistfamily #cauldronmug #ceramics #supporthandmade

My sweet huband painted this beautiful seahorse in oil on canvas. I love to be in our studio together while he paints and I make jewelery. This time in quarantine has allowed us freedom of time that we may never get again, and there have been many blessings among the challenges. Our family time together has been unforced and sweet, my son has been at home more than the last 2 years (he is 20 and in college) and we have all been fairly productive with our crafts. I have honestly had some times where I began to feel depressed and have some anxiety (which is a new feeling for me) and it has given me great perspective and increased compassion for anyone that deals with it on a regular basis. I have cried quite a bit. I have prayed all day some days. We had plans to travel both to Mexico to see family and to Alaska to see grandkids and we couldn't take either of those trips. I miss my grandbabies so much, but am so grateful for video chat (we like Google Duo). Our Mexico family has all stayed well, thank God, and we look forward to going as soon as possible to see everyone and reunite.
I have also enjoyed the uninterrupted hours allowing me to cook, and to bake and ultimately to eat and enjoy the fruit of our labors. We play tennis and my son is an extreme athlete, so when they closed all of that, we definitely struggled with being out of our physical routine, and we slept a bit more than usual. We would take evening walks downtown and wouldn't see a car or another person. It was a little unnerving to be so alone in our usually bustling, small beach town. All in all, we have rallied, we have perservered, we have cried and laughed and produced... we have gained pounds, lost pounds and used our time failry wisely. I wish you peace and perseverance as we continue to see how we can continue to live our lives! Stay busy, bake bread, make salsa or practice the piano! Hug each other often and lift each other up. Until next time, Janet
