Congolese Minkisi 'Power Figures' influence and provide a title to these graphic, imposing portraits by Alexis Peskine, currently dominating the space at October Gallery. His background in graphic design, photography and film (also exhibited) is apparent in the technique and chiaroscuro of the pieces. They are created with nails forming the contours and three-dimensional effect. Nail heads are of varying sizes to mould the facial geography of the subject - and gilded to contradict the nature of the material. The power extends to the underlying symbolism of nails and what they represent as well as their usual banality, while the gold elevates the subjects; image, dark skin tones and expressions to iconography. Halos of light emphasise the contrast with the silhouettes on the wooden planks stained in coffee and earth.
