The half-and-half Caleb dirty talk problem(?) you described is making me FEEL things bc. Dirty talk in English is one thing but in one's mother tongue... like. It's so much more vulnerable and embarrassing to even be on the receiving end of it tbh. and especially with Caleb it carries an extra dose of embarrassment and flavor, along with a sense of trust and safety which SHOULD conflict with the former but it just doesn't,, because I feel like the actual nature and history of your relationship can be maybe with much effort sidelined/excused away when talking in English but. When switching to your mother tongue.. oh it's so joever. I kinda wish there was a bilingual voice and dialogue option now just for that extra juice. Sorry. I will touch grass soon I promise

I've been thinking about this nonstop since reading it because I totally agree and I actually think this is the roadblock that prevents me from writing caleb. I think with dirty talk in general, the language might not make a huge emotional difference (though I have heard that some languages are worse for dirty talk than others haha). but I think it's caleb's specific brand of dirty talk that would feel so revealing of the incestuous nature of your relationship with him. he talks to you with all these terms you heard as a child - 妹妹，宝宝，乖，听话 - and he's using the same tone he did back then, the voice that he used when he was worried about you, or spoiling you, or looking after you because he was the eldest. he has you laid out in bed underneath him, touching you in ways he never has before, but he's still using the language that he raised you in.

in english, he's caleb - not the boy you grew up with, but a man, a pilot, a person who can be accessed by friends and coworkers and even strangers. but in chinese, he's 哥哥 - your big brother, your family, and he belongs only to you.

waaa thank you anon!! and this is such an interesting question. i wanna say yes! twelve would still be an electric guitar player i think - maybe he offers tutoring to kids that want to play guitar too and all the parents think he's super scary but the kids are like No mom he taught me some basic chords and then literally just talked about space the whole hour

i think nine's learned to play some bass, he's just not too into it. and i think ten, eleven and thirteen have a keyboard in their shared apartment and all know how to play a few select songs but none of them have the attention span to actually Sit and Learn properly. fifteen is more of a singer in my head but he learned how to play smoke on the water on twelve's guitar once and now he won't stop going around showing anybody that visits.

but yeah i think twelve is the only proper fully-fledged instrument player out of all of them lol

fawn is the secret fourth f after “fight, flight, and freeze.” it’s a trauma response that revolves around appeasement.

an example

the cause: you know that a parent is about to make life significantly worse for you when they have a certain tone of voice so you learn to immediately do favors and compliment them all with a smile to lessen exactly how much worse it will be. you’ve been taught to feel responsible for their mood therefore it’s your fault if you don’t do enough to make them happy again and whatever happens to you is something you’ve caused.

the effect: your girlfriend is in a mood and has a certain tone of voice. she has never given any indication that she’d purposefully hurt you mentally or physically. she also hasn’t given any indication that you did something to cause this bad mood. but there’s a voice in the back of your head saying “what if i did something wrong? what if this is what pushes her to do something harmful to me? she would never want to.. so that’d mean i’d really deserve it. i already know i’m the kind of person that drives people to hurt them.”

and at this point is where the self work comes in. my knee jerk reaction is to plan to only do and watch things she likes even if i don’t want to, shower her with compliments, make sure i’m stocked up on her favorite foods and juice before she comes over. all this not because i love her (which i do) but because i’m hoping doing all that will mean she won’t take things out on me (which she’s never done). and that’s not fair to either of us!

so in this hypothetical scenario instead ive chosen to fight a battle in my brain for over an hour to get myself out of that thought cycle and to stop myself from going over the top with appeasement when there’s shit that actually matters like making sure specific things are cleaned or swapped out so her cat allergies don’t bother her too much
