"As she stood before Aragorn she paused suddenly and looked upon him, and her eyes were shining. And he looked down upon her fair face and smiled; but as he took the cup, his hand met hers, and he knew that she trembled at the touch." - The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers by JRR Tolkien

”#stephen king can't keep getting away with this, #<- I’m so glad there’s a tag for that lmao, #“In what circumstances would I not avoid the pit of hell?” lotr’s about walking running crawling with your last ounce of strength towards i, #Because it must be done to save what you love most dearly, #Both stories include imperiling your soul in the desperate chance you and your friends (with the strength of your love and conviction) can, #rid the world of this ancient evil. And they drive me nuts”
I've noticed some parralels between Lord of the Rings and ending third of Dracula.
One character who is linked by sympethetic magic to the bad guy. The purpose of the link is for bad guy to control the character, but the good guys are exploiting the connection to thwart the bad guy. This leaves the character having to endure psychic battles against bad guy. (Frodo/Mina)
A character who cares very very deeply about the character above, being the first to support and care for them while they suffer under the bad guy's malign influence. (Sam/Jonathan)
Supporting character whose not central to the plot, but is instead a good friend and represents a culture. (Legolas and Gimli/Quincy)
A wizard who at first ran off to consult the books then came back to say that there is an evil thing. (Gandolf/Van Hellsing)
Roadtrip!
The bad guy's lair is nested in mountains that form something like a horseshoe. (Mordor/Carpathians)
Can't form the simularity between Arthur and Aragon in words but I feel there is one.

@sonxofxgondor continued from this.
Tumblr media
When they first had set out upon this journey Aragorn had his doubts about Boromir. Their interactions in Rivendell had only solidified that before coming together at the Council of Elrond. Their primary focus had been to assist Frodo in taking the ring to Mordor - to destroy the very ring that had caused so much chaos and heartache, pain and death. When the two men could agree that getting the little Hobbit safely to the mountain was first and foremost, that doubt had faltered somewhat.
They had things in common, it seemed. Aragorn had come to accept Boromir as a friend over time, their bond having started out of the most simplest of ways.
Finding the other man injured had set the ranger on edge. Doing the one thing he could do the brunette moved to help his friend up from the ground and get him to safety - regardless of what the man wanted him to do. Initially, he should have left the man behind because they would have been slowed down. But the ranger couldn't find it within himself to do so - he was never like that to begin with.
His arm going around Boromi's waist while bringing the man's arm around his shoulders, Aragorn had began to guide his friend out of the open and somewhere safe.
Hearing the words that were spoken the brunette simply shook his head, "I will not leave you here to be captured, or worse." The words left him in hushed tones, his gaze looking to the man he was helping for a moment before looking away. Aware of what his friend was capable of the warrior also knew that the other had not been capable of standing nor moving on his own.
Eventually he would reach safety, bringing Boromir to sit comfortably so that Aragorn could look his wounds over, "And would you rather risk the chance of being found and killed because you cannot find for yourself with such wounds?"

Went to answer this and realized it felt familiar, and it turned out I already answered it as a reply, haha. Copy and pasting it here with a few more details, since I’m a little less frazzled at the moment then I was the first time I saw this!
The answer to the question of Aragorn and Arwen is a little complicated because there’s a lot of lore involved. Elrond (and therefore Arwen) is part human, which means he and his descendants get to choose between elven immortality and human mortality. The short version is that when Arwen chose to stay in Middle Earth and marry Aragorn, she gave up her immortality and chose the fate of men: death and whatever comes after it. It’s the same choice her ancestor Lúthien made. Throughout the story Arwen is often compared to Lúthien in terms of her looks, and her choice to be with Aragorn is paralleled to the tale of Beren and Lúthien. Tolkien was inspired to create the story Beren and Lúthien by his love for his wife Edith, and he even had “Beren” and “Lúthien” respectively inscribed on their tombstones.
Tumblr media
(Source)
As for Arwen and Aragorn, Arwen dies of old age just a little after Aragorn does, 120 years after the end of LotR. Here’s the Wikipedia page for “The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen” from the LotR Appendices if you’re interested.
Lastly, because I think it’s lovely, from the same page as the photo, here’s an excerpt from a letter Tolkien wrote to his son after Edith passed:
I never called Edith Lúthien – but she was the source of the story that in time became the chief part of the Silmarillion. It was first conceived in a small woodland glade filled with hemlocks at Roos in Yorkshire (where I was for a brief time in command of an outpost of the Humber Garrison in 1917, and she was able to live with me for a while). In those days her hair was raven, her skin clear, her eyes brighter than you have seen them, and she could sing – and dance. But the story has gone crooked, & I am left, and I cannot plead before the inexorable Mandos.
The description of Edith he gives here is very similar to the one of Lúthien the first time that Beren saw her. And in The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen, when Aragorn first happens upon Arwen it is while he is singing about Lúthien, and he briefly reacts as if he is seeing Lúthien when he sees Arwen. So it’s easy to draw a straight line of sorts from Edith and JRR Tolkien to Lúthien and Beren and to Arwen and Aragorn.
what is thor going to do once Jane grows old and passes away? Is he ever going to date someone else?
I. DON'T. KNOW. 😭
No one lets them be together long enough to explore that later and bitter part of the interspecies mayfly december romance trope - "growing old" together raising a family and one partner being destined to lose the other while staying exactly this young.
As far as I know, it's never done in the comics or any other media. The MCU surprisingly has the best shot at actually doing it. Because it did show that sweet domestic life AND how much he's willing to move heaven and hel to have it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How I thought they could resolve it was either extending her life with those golden apples/apples of Idun or have him give up his powers to become a mortal (like he was in Thor1). This option is indeed painful but I think he'd do it in a heartbeat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But how the MCU actually resolved it was just killing her earlier than she would normally die. So he gets even less time with her. Truly wonderful writing. I'm sure this excellent writer was hired for the next film right away for this brilliant ending. 🤡
Y'all seem really intent on Thor dating someone new. 🤨 My man counted days of separation from her! If the new creative team/direction go for someone new, it's not congruent with my understanding of him.
The other famous interspecies mayfly december romance trope I know is Aragorn and Arwen from Lord of the Rings. @ LOTR fandom, what did LOTR do for this issue with Aragorn x Arwen? Would love to know any hopeful answers.
Tumblr media
PS: when you look up 'mayfly december romance' trope on Google, my GIF comes up for Thor and Jane :D

Aragorn II Elessar, 03.2024
Happy (late) birthday to the King.
New colour palette unlocked! Don't get used to it, though. Aragorn is special like that.
Also, this is my favourite look of his. He looks so good, you should expect me to draw him in this outfit again.

Aragorn II - Aragorn's name as Chieftain of the Dúnedain. He was possibly named after Aragorn I.
Thorongil - S "Eagle of the Star", a pseudonym used in Gondor and Rohan. Pronounced [θoˈroŋɡil].
Elessar - Q "Elfstone", Aragorn's name as a king. Despite popular use as such, Aragorn was never known as "Aragorn Elessar", "Aragorn II Elessar" or "King Aragorn". Pronounced [eˈlesːar].
Edhelharn - The Sindarin equivalent of Elessar, used in the King's Letter.[34]Edhelharn is the Sindarin word for Elfstone (Q. Elessar). Derived from the words edhel "elf" and (lenited) sarn. Pronounced [eˈðel.harn].
Elfstone - The Common Speech version of the previous two.
Envinyatar - Q "the Renewer". This title was claimed by Aragorn after the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. It referred to the prophecy that he would renew the hope of the Dúnedain by reuniting the Two Kingdoms.
Estel - Q. Usually glossed as "Hope", the concept estel more widely means "hope, trust, a temper of mind, steady fixed in purpose, and difficult to dissuade and unlikely to fall into despair or abandon its purpose". Pronounced [ˈestel].
Strider - A sobriquet given by the men of Bree. Aragorn used it mockingly.
Wingfoot - An honorary name given by Éomer after the pursuit of the Uruk-hai through the Eastemnet.
Telcontar - A Quenya form of "Strider", this was the name of Elessar's Royal House. It was not used independently. Pronounced [telˈkontar].
Isildur's Heir - A poetic address, as he was the heir of Isildur.
The Dúnadan - "Man of the West", a name given by Bilbo Baggins when their friendship evolved.
Longshanks - another, though less frequently used, sobriquet in Bree, ascribed to Bill Ferny. The legs of the Bree-men were shorter than the legs of the Dúnedain.
Arakorno - A rare Quenya form of Aragorn, which only appeared in a discussion about the words for Quenya. Pronounced [ˌaraˈkorno]
average person has 3 names" factoid actualy just statistical error. average person has 1 name. Aragorn II Elessar, who lives in Gondor & has 10,000 names, is an outlier adn should not have been counted

Time had done things to people.
In Aragorn's case, it had left him wondering. A mission had gone wrong an his second in command had gone missing - no word of why, whether she was alive or not, etc. It wasn't until he'd confronted one of his men that he'd gotten information from them. Truth be told; whatever had happened that day, he couldn't blame Hal for going into hiding. In fact, he had never gotten mad at the fact she did so.
Did it hurt? Yes.
Because he believed he was a trusted figure for her but with this, it seemed that hand been the case so much.
As soon as the warrior had gotten the information Aragorn had immediately began packing his bags, readying his horse. Giving the creature a gentle pat upon the neck the brunette slowly turned his head as footsteps behind him stopped, "Are you sure Hal will speak with you?" It wasn't a matter of if she would, it was more of what she'd be willing to divulge if she didn't turn him the other way.
After all; her comfortability mattered most, and that was something that the man could respect. "If she seems it fit, yes." Was all he said then lifted himself up upon the steed, one foot in the stirrup as the other had swung over straddling in the saddle. Once all was steady bright blues looked to the other, "Keep watch, take care - send word should anything arise." And with that he'd ushered his horse to move forward.
More time had passed - the Ranger uncertain of how much.
But what he was certain of was that his destination was right in front of him. Clambering off of the horse, Aragorn had given another gentle pet to the steed's neck, grasping the reigns within his hand tugging forward gently for the creature to follow. He stood at a gate, hearing the growls of a wolf though he hadn't moved. It was just in his best interest not to do so. A child had been with the animal, making the man's brow furrow slightly until both had disappeared.
And before him appeared Hal.
"..Hal."
For: Aragorn | @blackarrcw Muse (s): Hal + Theo Verse (au): Laughter of a child
Hal had never intended to have children. Not because she didn't want them - she had. Once. But because she didn't want to turn into her mother and destroy their childhood. It was merely a dream though, one that had been destroyed by words and injury. Destroyed by L I F E.
Or so she had thought.
"Mama! Mama!"
Nesthir, known as Theo to protect him, was a surprise. Unexpected but not unwanted. A source of hope for a former Ranger with no path to lead her back home again. Not that she knew where home was anymore. A mission gone wrong had sent her into hiding and cutting contact with everyone who cared, fearing their reactions. Only four people knew the truth but they wouldn't say a word to anyone.
"Having fun with Kai, kiddo?"
"Yes..? But he's growling at someone by the gate." The quiet 4 year old gave a half questioning answer as he wandered into her arms, looking partly confused and partly tired. Worn out by playing with his wolf companion, it didn't take long for Theo to fall asleep.
Dark grey eyes went cold the minute her son fell asleep and she took him inside, where another wolf was watching them. She carefully put him in his room, quickly followed by the other wolf who curled up by his bed. A faint smile formed briefly at the familiar sight, before she left the room. Being a mother didn't mean she had become slack in her Ranger training, in fact she had got better.
"Kai, go inside please." She murmured quietly, running a gentle hand through the wolf's fur. It licked her hand and disappeared inside the house with one last warning snarl at the stranger, trusting her. The weapons, cool gaze and neutral expression hadn't changed much from her days of being a Ranger. But upon seeing who it was, the coldness cracked slightly.
"Strider..."
