"As she stood before Aragorn she paused suddenly and looked upon him, and her eyes were shining. And he looked down upon her fair face and smiled; but as he took the cup, his hand met hers, and he knew that she trembled at the touch." - The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers by JRR Tolkien

”#stephen king can't keep getting away with this, #<- I’m so glad there’s a tag for that lmao, #“In what circumstances would I not avoid the pit of hell?” lotr’s about walking running crawling with your last ounce of strength towards i, #Because it must be done to save what you love most dearly, #Both stories include imperiling your soul in the desperate chance you and your friends (with the strength of your love and conviction) can, #rid the world of this ancient evil. And they drive me nuts”
I've noticed some parralels between Lord of the Rings and ending third of Dracula.
One character who is linked by sympethetic magic to the bad guy. The purpose of the link is for bad guy to control the character, but the good guys are exploiting the connection to thwart the bad guy. This leaves the character having to endure psychic battles against bad guy. (Frodo/Mina)
A character who cares very very deeply about the character above, being the first to support and care for them while they suffer under the bad guy's malign influence. (Sam/Jonathan)
Supporting character whose not central to the plot, but is instead a good friend and represents a culture. (Legolas and Gimli/Quincy)
A wizard who at first ran off to consult the books then came back to say that there is an evil thing. (Gandolf/Van Hellsing)
Roadtrip!
The bad guy's lair is nested in mountains that form something like a horseshoe. (Mordor/Carpathians)
Can't form the simularity between Arthur and Aragon in words but I feel there is one.

@sonxofxgondor continued from this.
Tumblr media
When they first had set out upon this journey Aragorn had his doubts about Boromir. Their interactions in Rivendell had only solidified that before coming together at the Council of Elrond. Their primary focus had been to assist Frodo in taking the ring to Mordor - to destroy the very ring that had caused so much chaos and heartache, pain and death. When the two men could agree that getting the little Hobbit safely to the mountain was first and foremost, that doubt had faltered somewhat.
They had things in common, it seemed. Aragorn had come to accept Boromir as a friend over time, their bond having started out of the most simplest of ways.
Finding the other man injured had set the ranger on edge. Doing the one thing he could do the brunette moved to help his friend up from the ground and get him to safety - regardless of what the man wanted him to do. Initially, he should have left the man behind because they would have been slowed down. But the ranger couldn't find it within himself to do so - he was never like that to begin with.
His arm going around Boromi's waist while bringing the man's arm around his shoulders, Aragorn had began to guide his friend out of the open and somewhere safe.
Hearing the words that were spoken the brunette simply shook his head, "I will not leave you here to be captured, or worse." The words left him in hushed tones, his gaze looking to the man he was helping for a moment before looking away. Aware of what his friend was capable of the warrior also knew that the other had not been capable of standing nor moving on his own.
Eventually he would reach safety, bringing Boromir to sit comfortably so that Aragorn could look his wounds over, "And would you rather risk the chance of being found and killed because you cannot find for yourself with such wounds?"

Went to answer this and realized it felt familiar, and it turned out I already answered it as a reply, haha. Copy and pasting it here with a few more details, since I’m a little less frazzled at the moment then I was the first time I saw this!
The answer to the question of Aragorn and Arwen is a little complicated because there’s a lot of lore involved. Elrond (and therefore Arwen) is part human, which means he and his descendants get to choose between elven immortality and human mortality. The short version is that when Arwen chose to stay in Middle Earth and marry Aragorn, she gave up her immortality and chose the fate of men: death and whatever comes after it. It’s the same choice her ancestor Lúthien made. Throughout the story Arwen is often compared to Lúthien in terms of her looks, and her choice to be with Aragorn is paralleled to the tale of Beren and Lúthien. Tolkien was inspired to create the story Beren and Lúthien by his love for his wife Edith, and he even had “Beren” and “Lúthien” respectively inscribed on their tombstones.
Tumblr media
(Source)
As for Arwen and Aragorn, Arwen dies of old age just a little after Aragorn does, 120 years after the end of LotR. Here’s the Wikipedia page for “The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen” from the LotR Appendices if you’re interested.
Lastly, because I think it’s lovely, from the same page as the photo, here’s an excerpt from a letter Tolkien wrote to his son after Edith passed:
I never called Edith Lúthien – but she was the source of the story that in time became the chief part of the Silmarillion. It was first conceived in a small woodland glade filled with hemlocks at Roos in Yorkshire (where I was for a brief time in command of an outpost of the Humber Garrison in 1917, and she was able to live with me for a while). In those days her hair was raven, her skin clear, her eyes brighter than you have seen them, and she could sing – and dance. But the story has gone crooked, & I am left, and I cannot plead before the inexorable Mandos.
The description of Edith he gives here is very similar to the one of Lúthien the first time that Beren saw her. And in The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen, when Aragorn first happens upon Arwen it is while he is singing about Lúthien, and he briefly reacts as if he is seeing Lúthien when he sees Arwen. So it’s easy to draw a straight line of sorts from Edith and JRR Tolkien to Lúthien and Beren and to Arwen and Aragorn.
what is thor going to do once Jane grows old and passes away? Is he ever going to date someone else?
I. DON'T. KNOW. 😭
No one lets them be together long enough to explore that later and bitter part of the interspecies mayfly december romance trope - "growing old" together raising a family and one partner being destined to lose the other while staying exactly this young.
As far as I know, it's never done in the comics or any other media. The MCU surprisingly has the best shot at actually doing it. Because it did show that sweet domestic life AND how much he's willing to move heaven and hel to have it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How I thought they could resolve it was either extending her life with those golden apples/apples of Idun or have him give up his powers to become a mortal (like he was in Thor1). This option is indeed painful but I think he'd do it in a heartbeat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But how the MCU actually resolved it was just killing her earlier than she would normally die. So he gets even less time with her. Truly wonderful writing. I'm sure this excellent writer was hired for the next film right away for this brilliant ending. 🤡
Y'all seem really intent on Thor dating someone new. 🤨 My man counted days of separation from her! If the new creative team/direction go for someone new, it's not congruent with my understanding of him.
The other famous interspecies mayfly december romance trope I know is Aragorn and Arwen from Lord of the Rings. @ LOTR fandom, what did LOTR do for this issue with Aragorn x Arwen? Would love to know any hopeful answers.
Tumblr media
PS: when you look up 'mayfly december romance' trope on Google, my GIF comes up for Thor and Jane :D

Aragorn II Elessar, 03.2024
Happy (late) birthday to the King.
New colour palette unlocked! Don't get used to it, though. Aragorn is special like that.
Also, this is my favourite look of his. He looks so good, you should expect me to draw him in this outfit again.

Tumblr media
1. Faramir, Son of Denethor [David Wenham] Def. Uther Pendragon [Gabriel Byrne]
Tumblr media
The Tilt with the most votes (by far) at 5,177 Votes was Geralt of Rivia [Henry Cavill] Vs. Sir Gary Galavant [Joshua Sasse] Which Galavant won with 57.7% of the Vote
It was an exodus of two-by-twos this round with both of our Ewan Mitchells [Aemond Targaryen and Osferth], both of our Henry Cavills [Geralt of Rivia and Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk], AND both of our Iain Glens [Ser Jorah Mormont and Prince Hamlet] losing their respective tilts to Erik Thurgilson [Christian Hillborg], Fili [Dean O'Gorman], Galavant [Joshua Sasse], Prince John [Oscar Isaac], "The Player" [Richard Dreyfuss] and Ned Stark [Sean Bean]. Even both of our Laurence Oliviers [Prince Hamlet and Henry V] were sent scurrying to the vents in disgrace, losing their tilts against Cesare Borgia [Francois Arnaud] and Elrond Half-elven [Hugo Weaving].
In fact, nearly of of the men of Middle Earth fared uncommon well in this round, with only three losing their matches. Haldir [Craig Parker] was unable to best the charms of that most magnificent of minstrels, Hubert Hawkins [Danny Kaye]. Kili [Aiden Turner] had a strong start against George, the Sheriff of Nottingham [Alan Rickman], but the race tightened about halfway through, and the Sheriff was able to pull through a stunning last-minute victory. Despite his brutal focus and discipline and grim sense of humor, Uglúk [Nathaniel Lees] suffered a crushing defeat under the cloven hoof of a greater and sexier evil, Darkness [Tim Curry]. The Sons of Denethor, Boromir [Sean Bean] and Faramir [David Wenham] truly dominated their oppositions (Alessandro Farnese [Diarmuid Noyes] and Uther Pendragon [Gabriel Byrne]) and were the only competitors to achieve margins of victory exceeding 90% in this round.
The Men of Westeros did not fare so well. Of their 14 remaining competitors only four now stand:
Lord Eddard "Ned" Stark [Sean Bean]
Ser Bronn of the Blackwater [Jerome Flynn]
Khal Drogo [Jason Momoa]
Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish [Aiden Gillen]
Ser Davos Seaworth [Liam Cunningham]
Ser Jorah Mormont [Iain Glen]
Prince Oberyn Martell [Pedro Pascal]
Ser Criston Cole [Fabien Frankel]
Lord Corlys Velaryon [Steve Toussaint]
Sandor "The Hound" Celgane [Rory McCann]
Jon Snow [Kit Harrington]
Gendry [Joe Dempsie]
Aemond Targaryen [Ewan Mitchell]
Tywin Lannister [Charles Dance]
But what of our Robins and Arthurs?
We began the Round with 3 of Each, but only one of each survived the round.
While Beowulf [Gerard Butler] bested King Arthur [Richard Harris] with a handy but respectful margin of 56.8%, Sean Connery's Arthur was unhorsed by Eomer [Karl Urban] in what can only be termed a crushing defeat, with a margin of 84.4% of the Vote. Only Bradley James's incarnation was able to defeat his opposition, Prince Henry [Dougray Scott], who, though strong contender, proved no match for Arthur's winning smile.
On the Robin side, our last Robin standing, is Cary Elwes, who defeated Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan with a tidy 70.8% margin. Richard Todd's stunningly attractive but lesser known Robin was defeated by the only remaining Son of York, Richard III [Aneurin Barnard], while the iconic Errol Flynn iteration was unhorsed (rather ironically) by one of the most appallingly unjust and underhanded aristocrats in the lists, Adhemar, Count of Anjou [Rufus Sewell]. We can neither confirm nor deny allegations made against the Count of cheating, nor the veracity of the rumours circulating that the Count's rather costly saddle was stolen from his tent at the end of the day while Adhemar was enjoying a flagon of wine with fellow victors Sir Guy of Gisbourne [Basil Rathbone], Sir Guy of Gisborne [Richard Armitage], the Sheriff of Nottingham [Alan Rickman] and His Royal Highness Prince John [Oscar Isaac].
Our third Sir Guy [Michael Wincott] did not join them, as he rather unfortunately lost his match against Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe [Anthony Andrews] and, after a rather unpleasant exchange with his cousin the Sheriff, preferred to drink in the company of a different, more polite Sheriff [Peter Cushing] (who also lost his match against the Hound [Rory McCann]) and his friend Prince Prospero [Vincent Price].)
But I am sure some of your are curious as to how the Master of Revels' list of Secret Favourites is faring. Well, I can tell you, it sustained some heavy losses this round, though a still rather healthy 34 remain in the competition. Aye, but at what cost?
