What is a pet peeve of yours when it comes to the level up or hypergamy community?
Hey habibti,
To be honest, I probably could make a list, but currently I really dislike when a woman who is on her level up journey or whatever has some weird tendency to fully believe in the stereotypes of other woman in other cultures while also dating the men from those cultures. It's no secret that with this whole hypergamy movement there has been an increase in interest in Asian and Arab men. I find it pathetic when I hear women talk about how easy it is for them to attract men from those cultures because apparently the women from those cultures aren't enough. The number of times I see women posting on different platforms that those women are too submissive, they don't have a backbone, maybe not highly educated, and whatever other bullshit they can think of is endless. It's also the quickest way to figure out someone isn't living the life they are preaching, or they are dealing with a man who is manipulating them into thinking they are special. Women from these cultures know how to handle the men better than you do because of understanding the nuances. Majority of the time these women are also educated, demanding of respect, and are not some submissive pushovers like some people like to paint them as. It's super weird to me when women feel the need to trash other women while making themselves seem special. It reeks of insecurity. People who are uncultured and haven't really experienced the world tend to think in black and white. Take girls who speak like this with a grain of salt.

i have alot of thoughts and feeling about that last post bc it has touched my life personally and like not that that matters, not that it was necessary for me to care, at the same time * handwaves* you know? anyway i want to talk about it its under a readmore bc it kinda got out of control..
But i was a part of a community service club at school, and our whole thing was like going out into the community and figuring out what people, organizations needed and then developing and building those things for them. Usually charging for materials or if ASI covered it then doing it for free.
Last semester two members became fellows of an organization Tikkum Olam Makers (TOM), and our main project that semester was making these little mobility trainers for disabled kids and giving them to a local childrens hospital. I helped out as much as I could but honestly besides the two members no one else really had any direct contact with the org.
...Until this semester they announced the club would be joining a competition sponsored by TOM and if we could all sign up please so they could get more money? And I did and once the emails started coming in...noticed this was an org based in Tel Aviv. And my heart sank and I couldn't reconcile taking money from these people even if it was to help others and so I emailed them asking to be dropped from the competition.
Next meeting I show up hoping for another project that ISN'T related to TOM but it seems like the club has gone all in, with prev. mentioned members talking about internships that TOM offers (in israel of course) but how they weren't going to apply "because of the war" and how their mentor had been drafted into the iof and i wish i could say i did something but I just quietly left..and dropped the club and I don't talk to these people anymore.
because like..how can an organization based in a settler state claim to be for the children...helping disabled children when people WITHIN the organization are disabling and killing children, people only a couple miles away? how can they pick and choose which children to help and which to hurt? i dont know how to end this i agonized over it for a long time...

This post sparked great joy to see, got me and wife talking about how often I heard some of these and other phrases growing up, she encouraged me to add on to it. <3 So here are some Arabic phrases I heard sprinkled into English growing up! Na'eeman arabic blessing, etymology is difficult here. From what I could find it online comes from two words. Ni'am, blessing, and na'eem, a blissful mental/spiritual state. The -An suffix makes the meaning more like you're changed/transformed into this state. Family says the connotation is more like been cleansed or purified. You say it when you see someone freshly showered or with a new haircut. They're been transformed, purified, cleaned, so you say it as a compliment/blessing. Standard response is a simple thank you, "Shukran." Your friend sends a pic of their new haircut? "Na'eeman! 👌😩" Buddy comes out of the shower feeling fresh? "Na'eeman!" Someone says it to you? "Shukran." or if you're friends/family, "Shukran Habibi."
Haramat Arabic, no clue on etymology. Best I could get is kind of like "What a shame." Used when you want to express sympathy. "She has a cold, haramat." "Haramat, you deserve better." "Haramat, your uncle had to drive how long?"
Allahkareem Not entirely sure on the literal translation but means something like "God is Generous/Provides", said more like "god provides/provided." Basically used as a noncommittal maybe or we'll see. My mom says this usually meant no, so I feel pretty comfortable saying noncommittal. "Hey baba can we go to the store later?" "ehh... Allahkareem." "Can we get that leaky faucet fixed?" "Allahkareem." "Can we go to the movies?" "Allahkareem." Alasas Arabic slang usually translated as "As If." Literally "On the foundation of." This is used as a specific word to denote sarcasm. It's a tone indicator that's been around since at least since my grandparents were growing up. You can use it either at the start of a statement or at the end, either works, and it means you're being sarcastic. "Alasas he's good for it." "He's spent another $50 on lotto, he's gonna win it this time. Alasas." "Of course she didn't do it on purpose, alasas." "Alasas you couldn't possibly have been at fault." "I just love when the boss watches me work over my shoulder. Alasas."
i think we should all start using arabic words and phrases more often because its a beautiful language and also theres not really. english equivalents that have the same vibes
theres also the comedy potential of it. you guys dont know the joy of having your muslim friend text you "hopefully the racists in our city will all get sick and cant go to the protest" and you, as a pasty white guy, responding with "inshallah they get covid"
its a one hit KO every time. its fucking hilarious. theres no english word that has the same effect.
he also once texted me that he got over a mysterious illness he came down with (i think? i cant remember the exact context) and i responded with "subhanallah he is cured"
again, one hit KO. he lost his shit.
what im saying is we gotta normalise arabic. its just a language like any other, and it has some great words. its just like saying "thank god" or whatever, but theres so much variety and nuance. its beautiful

"We were twinshoots sprouting beautifully on a tree. When our branches spread, our shade stretched and our buds flushed, but time snapped my other shoot."
-poet unknown. Written on her brother's death, according to some sources, or her husband according to others. I think this seems more likely to have been written for a cherished sibling "twinshoots" sprouting from the same tree. Though I can see the argument for a lover as well.
