MARCH 30th 2024- Moroccan writer Dounia El Barhdadi reflects on the cruelty her father faced under the French occupation of Algeria and it's parallels to the oppression and occupation of Palestinians by Israel.
"Just as previously and currently colonised communities are bonded by their bloodstained history, so too are their colonisers. There exists a unifying doctrine embedded in colonial history, one which has been weaponised to commit atrocities across the globe, and it has many names: the French ‘mission civilisatrice’, the British ‘white man’s burden’, and the German ‘Kulturmission’. The French justified their brutality in Algeria with claims that FLN activists, and Algerian civilians by extension, were ‘savages’ and ‘animals’, and that their subjugation was a ‘necessary evil’, just as Hitler denounced the Jewish people, and all non-Aryan people, as ‘Untermenschen’ - ‘subhumans’.
"The same ideology existed in Apartheid South Africa, where the social, economic and legal divide between black and white people was characterised and maintained for almost 50 years by the idea that the latter were intrinsically superior. The myth of intrinsic ethno-superiority can also be observed in comments made by Israeli officials since the inception of Israel, and even before; the most notable recent comments include Netanyahu's description of Palestinians as 'children of darkness', as well as Yoav Gallant's assertion that Israel is fighting 'human animals', when questioned about the ethics of disproportionate reprisals in Gaza."
"This kind of propaganda operates by dehumanising the colonised in the eyes of settlers, through portraying them as ‘Other’, as lesser, as alien. Even more than this, these doctrines portray the actions of the colonial power as a mercy to the colonised - the latter must be ‘civilised’, and if they do not respond to their education, then it is necessary to remove them altogether. George W. Bush’s ‘War on Terror’ repackaged and weaponised this xenophobic ideology in order to profit from manufactured conflict in the Middle East after 9/11, and desensitise the global public to the suffering of Arab and Muslim civilians."

stay safe to all right now, especially Muslims. We are getting dragged out of cars and homes, being set on fire, acid attacks, physical assault like pulling off hijab or niqab, being told we are oppressed as women & the white man will save us.
stay safe❤️🤲🏽

one thing that's been really interesting about seeing first-hand arab accounts take the center stage for once is people seeing us as we are in ways that so intensely counter what westerners are led to believe. i keep thinking of reem and her grandpa who calls her "soul of my soul" and how deeply that touched many people. and it touched me too, of course, how could it not? that's one thing i've always loved about being arab is how deeply poetic our language is. reem's grandfather is not at all an exception, he's the norm. poetic expressions like that are just part of the fabric of our language. my parents usually call me "soul of my heart." it's just nice because i think a lot of westerners don't think too hard about arabic beyond occasionally seeing it in media when someone shouts something about allah before Doing A Terrorism. it's very pavlovian.
i'm not saying this is the #1 most important takeaway, but i hope as you watch these videos you start to internalize a little bit that arabs are deeply eloquent and well spoken people. not that we need to be that in order to be respected, but linguistic racism should never be underestimated. language is a core part of our culture, and it's been demonized to hell and back, and demonizing one's language is a pretty effective way to make sure no one ever listens to them. why else would gazans be crying for mercy in english?

JUNE 21 2024- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Texas) is calling on law enforcement authorities to investigate the attempted murder of a Palestinian mother and her two young children as a hate crime.
On May 19th, a Texas woman attempted to drown two Palestinian children and their mother in a pool. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Texas) is calling on law enforcement authorities to investigate the incident as a hate crime.
"The alleged attack (Euless PD report 24-00022036) reportedly occurred on Sunday, May 19th, at the family’s apartment complex swimming pool area.  Mrs. H, the mother, who wears hijab (Islamic head scarf) and modest swimwear, was watching her children in the shallow end of the pool when a White American woman entered the swimming pool area." "The alleged attacker reportedly approached the mother with racist interrogations then jumped into the swimming pool and grabbed the children to the deep end of the pool to allegedly drown them." "The mother reported jumping into the pool to save her children. According to the mother, her 6-year-old-son was able to escape, but her petite 3-year-old daughter was unable. The alleged attacker snatched off the mother’s head scarf and used it to beat the mother as well as kicking her to keep her away while forcing her daughter’s head underwater." "Mrs. H stated that an African American man helped rescue her daughter from the attacker and more people gathered and witnessed. Cuffed and taken away by the police officer, the attacker reportedly shouted to a bystander woman who was calming the mother down “Tell her I will kill her, and I will kill her whole family.”
"A recent CAIR report says it received more than 8,000 complaints of anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian in 2023 – a 56% increase over previous year - and the highest the number has been in 28 years"
