i should do some worldbuilding for bronwyn, but my problem rn is i really wanna give her a canon " traveler, " but i also wanna create a concept where your muse is the " traveler. " i wouldn't even know where to begin with the second option, though, so maybe i'll just brainstorm a plot and slap that on a wishlist.

i also just want to make her a piece of a bigger story, maybe even bring back a few old ( and i mean old ) oc's. if anyone knew me from years, ago, you'd recognize delwyn and eletta from a mile away as my grumpy prince and the annoying citizen who adopted him :' ) but i'm staring at my hands like where do i begin and how does one create a world with fictional kingdoms and governments and oh my gosh this is a lot

SPOILERS!!! REFERENCES AND EASTER EGGS IN F&C ep. 2: SIMON PETRIKOV

Let me know if I missed anything!

First of all the title sequence is fucking cool. I don't want to speculate about the various things we see in it, like the apartment getting blown up or the Fern tree growing into its 1000+ version, because I'm sure the show will get round to all that!

The first scene was an awesome reintroduction to the post-apocalypse, showing us the dynamic between Simon and Marcy. The button popping off Marcy's dungarees was a reference to young Marcy's first appearance, Memory of a Memory, when she removed one of the buttons herself to fix Hambo's eye.

Simon was show playing a live set at Dirt Beer Guy's tavern in Obsidian. It seems they've gotten to know each other quite well over the past twelve years. Dirt Beer Guy asks Simon if he's read his new book draft, about a character called Joe Milkshake who was first mentioned in the episode Root Beer Guy.

Despite the fact we saw Jake in the trailers, Finn and T.V. pretty much confirm in this scene that Jake is dead, and has presumably been dead since before Obsidian. I guess Bronwyn wasn't the only Jake descendant who Finn took on as an apprentice, but T.V. doesn't seem all that into it. The Finn and Jake we saw in the trailer are likely from an alternate universe that we have yet to see.

Finn uses his weed whacker to cut through these bushes. A nice way of showing he's fully recovered from his Fern guilt. The focus here is very much on Simon's problems instead of Finn's.

Finn parts with Simon to go and visit Huntress Wizard. The nature of their relationship remains ambiguous and I expect it to stay that way.

Simon has the Island Lady from The Party's Over Isla de Señorita in his phone. I guess they reconnected after he became Simon again. He also has Abracadaniel. I always liked Ice King's friendship with Abracadaniel and the rest of the Order of Giuseppe so I hope they're still friends!

Cute Bubbline scene. Back in the episode Bonnibel Bubblegum, Mr. Creampuff suggested he and PB get matching tattoos. Now she's (trying to) do the same with the girl she's chosen rather than some guy who was chosen for her! Also Marceline is using the same phone she's been seen with in a few previous episodes, including Go With Me and Be Sweet.

I think the flying human city is called Up-Ton.

Choose Goose! He keeps coming back! And he's evil now! People were joking about him being the antagonist of Fionna and Cake after that weird post-credits scene in Wizard City and the fact he was in hell in Together Again. I wasn't expecting that to actually come true. Glob knows why he's hanging out in a cage in Simon's house.

The pattern of GOLB's eyes is reflected in Simon's glasses during the ritual. He is doing the same dance that Betty was doing to summon GOLB in the finale.

Among the objects in Simon's GOLB shrine are the Farmworld Enchiridion, the flying carpet that Simon stole from Ash and was later frequently used by Betty, the crocodile clips that Betty used for her magic rituals, two effigies of GOLB, and what looks to be the shell of the snail who was seen throughout the original series.

In this credits sequence, Fionna and cake are dreaming about the mask being worn by the bear than Finn slew, and a butterfly with a smiley face on it. Perhaps symbolising Finn?

Arondir stood looking down at his friend’s granddaughter as she stared up at him for a moment before she piped up, “I’m an apprentice today!”

Nodding gravely, he asked, “And do you feel the weight of that responsibility?”

Bronwyn bit her lip, tilting her head to the side as if in thought. “I think so,” the child replied slowly. “Everyone says I’m to take care of them just as my granny takes care of me.”

He knew he looked satisfied with her response, taking it as seriously as she seemed to be. “Well, in that case, I have come with a gift to celebrate as well.”

Bronwyn’s eyes widened. “A gift? What gift?”

“You shall see,” he said as he reached into his cloak’s warm pocket and drew out his small burden very, very carefully before handing it over to her. “You must take great care with this little one as you would with any of the villagers,” he said, speaking softly as she took from him the tiny baby squirrel that gave an irritable cheep at the jostling intrusion into its sleep.

The child’s eyes were very large as she looked down at her new companion. “It’s so little,” she marveled. “Where did you find it?”

Arondir sighed. “A tree fell in one of the groves not far from here during the last storm. My companion and I wished to pay our respects, and this child of the forest had its nest in the tangled branches. He will find a good home with you.”

The Bird and the Hand Dynamic: RoP Edition

“[Celeborn] is the Hand to Galadriel’s Bird. A stable yet strong perch while she flies singing her song. The cherisher and the cherished.”— from my response to Calam Lynch cast as Celeborn

If the Hand tries to hold the Bird too tightly, it will fly away forever. If the Bird doesn’t make the Hand feel confident it will return, the Hand will find another Bird.

The Bird: cherished/beloved/nurtured/supported

The Hand: cherisher/lover/nurturer/supporter

It’s a dynamic that occurs in all relationships. People seek complements. Birds need occasional freedom and Hands need occasional excitement. We can alternate or switch roles depending.

Problems occur when both parties wish to play the same role. Two Birds won’t commit to each other. Two Hands are boring together.

Birds and Hands in RoP, as I see it:

Galadriel was the Hand, Finrod was rhe Bird.

Disa is the Hand, Durin is the Bird

Poppy is the Hand, Nori is the Bird.

Elendil is the Hand, Galadriel is the Bird.

Arondir is the Hand, Bronwyn is the Bird.

Nori is the Hand, the Stranger is the Bird.

Kennen is the Hand, Earien is the Bird.

Elrond is the Hand, Galadriel is the Bird.

Elendil is the Hand, Miriel is the Bird.

Halbrand was the Hand, Celebrimbor was the Bird.

Elendil is the Hand, Isildur is the Bird.

Pharazon is the Hand, Miriel is the Bird.

Halbrand is the Hand, Galadriel is the Bird.

Galadriel and Sauron are two Birds circling each other until the Third Age.

Theory: Despite his ambition to rule Middle-Earth, at his core, Sauron is a Hand

The wills of Eru’s Children are Sauron’s Bird and he is the smothering Hand.

As Sauron and Mairon, he’s most successful, most natural, and acutely happy in a supportive transformative role. His desire for order via dominantion is him as a Hand perverted.

Think about it: Sauron spent 300 years teaching and mentoring the Elven smiths. He could have shortened his a time and tell them how to make the rings. But why wouldn’t Sauron enjoy working with Celebrimbor, the greatest of Elven smiths, while it lasted (thanks to compartmentalization)?

Aule was the Hand, Mairon was the Bird. Did Aule try to hold on too tightly? Did Mairon want too much freedom? Or outside the master-apprentice environment, were they two Birds?

Sauron was the Hand, Morgoth was the Bird. With his master defeated, Sauron lost a Bird to “nurture” and presumably an established means to achieving his own goals, likely sending him into a spiral for a time.

Quite likely, Sauron’s “fair deeds” during his coined “repentance phase” began as a Hand. Tolkien tells us Sauron’s vast knowledge and power contributed to his fall back to evil. In other words, he realized his ultimate goal could be achieved as alternately Hand and Bird.

But Sauron is a natural Hand. He’s going against his nature when he tried to play both roles. I wouldn’t call the Witch-King or Saruman Hands. It’s very transactional.

"Strange hours for a shop to keep, no?" A voice spoke from somewhere behind her and she spun around in surprise, only to find her empty shop waiting for her.

Her gaze flits around the room, eyeing the shadowed corners but still seeing no one.

"... Behind you."

Spinning on her heel she finds a cloaked figure looming against the front door, wearing an eerie plague mask to cover their features.

"Sources say this is the witch's lair." Their voice comes softly muffled through the mask. "So who might you be?"

Their question is followed by their advancing steps and Bronwyn back up, finding her lower back pressed against one of her shops glass display cases, her heart pounding in her chest.

As soon as the intruder is near enough to her she swings her fist out, but she's just a second too late to surprise them as they lean away from her.

"Ah ha! You've got guts," they say lightly, a quiet chuckle escaping them. "En garde, then. Let's see what else you've got."

She remembers the empty bottle sitting on the counter just behind her, that she'd been planning to repurpose as a candle holder, and tosses an easy magical attack at him. Bright bursts of light meant to blind and singe any visible skin.

"Oh, has he been teaching you his tricks?" The figure laughs meanly at the display, waving the lights away with a gloved hand. "Unfortunately for you, I've seen them all befo-"

She cuts off their monologue by launching the bottle at their head, earning her a surprised yelp as their head snaps back with the force.

Knocked loose by the blow, their mask clatters to floor.

She takes the opportunity to run for the kitchen, hoping to reach the back door. She hears footsteps closing in behind her before she even nears the doorway and panics, her gaze shooting to her left and right, to the stairs where she'd sent her familiar before answering the door for the Countess.

"Callister!" She calls frantically, and she thinks she can just hear the sound of him landing on the floor after leaping from her bed.

She feels a hand snatch her arm the next second, followed by an arm wrapping around her waist and pulling her back against the intruder's body.

"You do have guts, don't you?" A distinctly male voice purrs into her ear. "Who else is here?"

"No one!" She says quickly, her heart beating so fast she's almost afraid of it popping out of her chest. "It's just us!"

"Than who did you just call?" He demanded, turning them around and pushing her back towards the front of the shop.

They've barely made it back into the room when they hear a menacing growl from behind them. The man at her back goes stiff and she can feel him turn to look right before she hears Callister's nails hitting the floorboards in a sprint.

"Fuck!" He gasps, right as the dog's teeth sink into his coat, apparently sensing that the man's thigh-high leather boots would offer too much resistance.

The man releases her waist as he's unbalanced by her dog. She throws her elbow back and catches him in the gut, earning a small noise as she pulls away, trying to pull her arm free.

Standing in front of him she finally gets a look at his face and she goes still in surprise, he turns to look at her for a moment when he realizes she's stopped struggling, and her eyes go wide when her suspicions are confirmed.

Bloody faced from her previous attack and sporting an eye patch, she still recognizes the man before her. Their was a time when most of Vesuvia was familiar with him, but it had been years now.

"Doctor Jules?" Callister stills at the sound of her voice, teeth still sunk into the man's coat.

He quirks an eyebrow at her. "Haven't heard that name in years." He says, hesitantly releasing her arm and looking back towards the dog at his feet.

"Cal," she beckons the dog over to her, and he releases the coat with another growl aimed at the man, before padding over to stand in front of her defensively.

Doctor Jules shakes out his coat before turning to stare at her appraisingly.

"Now that we've settled that," he mutters, watching her familiar warily. "Tell me, where is the witch?"

"Why would I ever answer that?" She asked meanly, glaring at him.

"I thought you might say that," he muttered, wiping at his bloodied brow with a rag he pulls from his trouser pocket, his mood clearly darkening. "Well, no sense in wasting the visit."

He stuffs the rag back in his pocket, face almost entirely cleared of blood now. "You're a fortune teller, aren't you?" He questions, earning a wary look from her. "Tell me my fortune, and I'll leave you in peace."

She looks at him in confusion. "... What?"

Well, Tristan is very close to Isolde (or rather, was, back in Astolat. It's complicated.) He's also close to Elaine, she's like a little sibling to him. He taught her a lot about fighting and dragon flying.

Dinadan is engaged to a scholar's apprentice that you will meet at some point in book 1 (the apprentice helps Mordred and some of the other knights brush up on etiquette and knowledge about Ituscia in preparation of Sophie's arrival).

Bronwyn's in a relationship with a fellow knight, Elyana, which I haven't talked about before.

Percy and Gawain are a chaotic duo if they go out drinking, they're unstoppable.

See, this is where I get confused about people who are like fanfiction (derisive). EVERY fanfic author has given Elrond some time staring up at the evening star and having feelings. I've done it. What's the issue? Are they afraid if it was too faithful of an adaptation they'd be forced to accept it as canon? It's still an adaptation! The books are still the books! /rant

Elrond, not everyone needs to hear "you'll miss your parents when they're gone". Some people's parents are just jerks. Possibly this isn't one of those times, though.

The moment the last tenant hangs up his tool belt, I want to walk back and forth through that breezeway. Peek into every cupboard. Climb every stair. Rootle through every cubbyhole. Jump on every bed. There is so much to see, and touch, and smell… and I want to DO IT ALL!

Thoughts & Observations: S5E3 Free Will

Marsali is already proving to be the perfect apprentice. She’s motivated, inquisitive, intelligent, detail-oriented, logical, and curious about all sorts of new-fangled ideas and things there in Boston. Just wait till she tastes those cream pies.

Claire’s voiceover almost needs a Dun Dun Dun… soundtrack. Let’s hope she dares history with caution, and the copy of Dr. Rawlings’ Recommendations Fergus delivers to the printer doesn’t include scrawls and doodles of anything too new-fangled.

Really like the Jamie Payne (director) – Luke Schelhass (writer) combo! 😃

No doubt many people echoed Jamie’s Deo gratius when they realized we were being treated to a JamieClaire-centric episode. It worked well for me, but so did Between Two Fires. I find each of Jamie and Claire compelling on their own, pursing their individual interests and causes. I also like seeing their relationships with other characters. Call me kooky.

Callback #1: This one takes place in a kind of Upside Down. Remember S4E5 Savages, when Jamie returned to the Ridge from Woolam’s Creek, happy after discovering #MurtaghSaved? A shotgun-armed Claire was unable to sleep after the tragedies of Petronella’s and her baby’s measle deaths and Adawehi’s murder.

In Free Will, Jamie returns to the Ridge from Hillsborough, stunned by the Regulators’ tarring and feathering and by Lieutenant Knox’s murdering Ethan MacKinnon, and anxious about needing to form a militia. Despite missing Jamie while he’s away, Claire’s work on the Ridge and interaction with her children and grandchildren satisfies her and allows her to sleep soundly.

Fergus takes a mean shorthand! 🖌

We hear the first of many “Roger Mac(s)” to come.

“We’ll be taking yer whisky with us to share with the men. The finest I’ve tasted since leaving Scotland.” Fergus Claudel Fraser: Official Distiller of Fraser’s Ridge (I love this adaptation! I don’t think I mentioned in my The Fiery Cross episode review how much I loved Jamie’s calling Fergus to stand by his hand. Fergus, like Young Ian, is a man of worth.)

⚠️ Murtz Alert ⚠️ Oops… False alarm… 🙁 Fraser’s Ridge workforce includes a lot of silver-haired, ponytail-wearing tenants. 🤷🏻‍♀️

“Mr. Trouble” 😂 Too bad wee Robin Scott, who plays Germain, would be too young to attend most of the cast’s social outings. He would be the life of the party. 🎉

Does Marsali need Brianna’s help with reading because medical books are advanced academics and Brianna holds a degree from M.I.T, or because Laoghaire dropped the ball and didn’t educate her daughters? It’s safe to say Laoghaire didn’t encourage them to read anything that sat on a witch’s bookshelf.

Callback #2: The JamieClaire-on-horseback-led convoy’s leaving Fraser’s Ridge took me back to S2E8 The Fox’s Lair and E9 Je Suis Prest. Did you notice the pecking order? 1: Colonel & Physician. 2: Captain. 3: Official Distiller. Priorities are important, during times of peace and of war.

So… Stephen Bonnet’s free from incarceration, and recently sighted in Wilmington? How far is Wilmington from Fraser’s Ridge? Does it matter almost every fit and young man, almost every weapon, and the only doctor are on the road to Brownsville, while Bonnet’s purported child and the child’s mother are back with the not-so-fit-nor-young-nor-armed men on Fraser’s Ridge? I suppose it doesn’t, since the mother herself knows Bonnet could be consulting a map and stealing a horse as we speak. I somehow doubt her husband and named father of her child would agree… if he only knew.

Callback #3: Colonel Jamie tells Captain Roger there’s no time to train the militia, so he’ll teach them to fight like Highlanders, to gather and scatter on his command. Can you say Dougal MacKenzie in S2E9 Je Suis Prest? Sure. I knew you could.

Thank goodness for Closed Captioning. Growing up immersed in Scots (language, accents, people), I rarely “huh?” during Outlander, but I have no ear for Welsh, and John Quincy Myers keeps my clicking that CC button. And his lines are so worth understanding! 😂

Callback #4: The fireside banter and guy-talk, with Claire’s being the only participant without a Y chromosome, takes me back to S1E5 Rent. Good times.

We’re slowly adding to the books’ Fraser’s Ridge roster.  We already know Isaiah Morton and Ronnie Sinclair. Around the fire we meet brothers Evan and Kenny Lindsay, and Geordie Chisholm. Isaiah Morton on his way to Brownsville? What could go wrong?

Speaking of books, so much of Fireside Chat reminded me of The Fiery Cross, right down to Jamie’s not needing to worry whether his feet or his hair might burn in order to sleep “warm.” Nudge, nudge, wink, wink. Say no more. 

I am very impressed with Paul Gorman’s playing the Beardsley twins, and duly impressed with his characters’ appearing onscreen at the same time. Well done! BUT… the BEST part of the entire Twins Story introduction was the explanation for Keziah’s missing britches. 😻

You’re lucky, Lizzie Wemyss, I’m completely committed to Murtz, because any man who would forgo his pants to keep kittens warm is my kind of man. ❤️

I wonder if Father Fogden ever missed his mirror?

I couldn’t begin to imagine those young men’s lives. Orphaned at two, with four sisters dead at sea. Sold on a 30-year term, starved, beaten, deafened… and made to sleep in a barn that is too cold for goats.

Josiah isn’t going to avoid Claire’s scary looking medical tools for long if he keeps drawing attention to his sore throat. Owie!

More book people, People: Joan, Hugh, and Iain Òg Findlay. In The Fiery Cross Roger also meets with Iain Mòr, Joan’s brother and head of the family.

Two years, three months, and five days…

It’s probably the meds, but when Fanny Beardsley slams the door in Jamie’s face, I imagined her turning to the goats and saying, “I told ‘im we got already got one.”

I’m thankful my TV’s Smell-o-Vision™ is out of order. Brianna, oh she who could not tolerate an autopsied torso, is thankful she skipped this road trip all together.

The direction, lighting, special effects, makeup, and prosthetics are excellent in this part of the episode and Mr. McCreary has outdone himself with the soundtrack. Truly a House of Horrors, Chez Beardsley.

“None of us could give him a baby.” Um, I hate to break it to you, Aaron, but I suspect it’s your problem, not any of your five wives’.

Brit Bronwyn James gives Baltimore Fanny a decent generic American accent.

Poor Jamie! He knows the pain of sending Claire back through the stones. Contemplating sending his beloved daughter and grandson, and tolerated son-in-law, is too much. 😖

Poor Fanny! To live as she has for two years, three months, and five days with that “wretch,” and awaken to see Jamie and Claire’s spooning, peacefully sleeping in her living room. I’d sneak off in the dead of night, too.

My grand-père went to Hillsborough and all I got was a wagon full of goats. 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐

“I’ll do what must be done.” No foreshadowing, thank you very much. James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser has suffered enough.

The concept for this character was very spontaneous. Years ago there was this image I found of some screaming opossum character with a yellow hoodie in a mailbox. I saved the image years ago and that became the inspiration for this character. I envision her to end up becoming Lucas's apprentice at some point. I'm still working on her origins. But for now, she's just an abandoned child working for a thieves' den. I also decided to add a quick background cause I thought it would be weird to have a random tree, a character and nothing else but white space. @joaoppereiraus oc Gwen was also a heavy influence on the design for this. Especially after watching "BIG KID'S TOY". Made me want to make a mouse like character. Went with an opossum after some suggestions.
