from childhood, waylen mim knew that he would never be the child that his mother always wanted. while he inherited her magical abilities from birth and expected to utilize his powers and turn him into a pawn in her little games, he displayed early on that he wasn’t exactly up to the task. not only did he hold his mother’s desire to cause chaos, but his powers were fairly unpredictable. natural clumsiness aside, he found himself making mistakes whenever he used his magic. due to the messy nature of his abilities, he often found himself being berated and scolded by his mother. especially since his sibling was everything his mother wanted in a child, resulting in her constantly comparing the two and bringing up waylen’s shortcomings as a wizard. he felt completely isolated in his own family and because of his mother’s reputation, making friends was a near-impossible task.

instead, he found solace in making friends with the woodland creatures near the cottage he and his family resided in. one of the said creatures that kept him in constant company was his familiar, a hedgehog named isolde. on occasion, waylen would sneak out of the dark forest and into the kingdom. while he was often too frightened to approach anyone, he enjoyed watching people from afar. he would usually remain hidden and make up little stories about them in his head. it was a very solitary existence, only heightened by the fact that neither his mother nor sibling wanted anything to do with him. his mother’s disappointment would have only been heightened if she knew his opinion of her greatest rival: merlin.

he sought out the other and tried to piece together why his mother despised the fellow wizard so much. but instead of validation, he couldn’t help but admire the other. this resulted in waylen approaching the other and becoming an apprentice of the other in secret. he was just starting to get a small handle on his powers when he disappeared, leaving him distraught and unsure which only heightens the chaotic nature of his abilities.
