Hyacinthus and Achilles genuinely make me so upset because imagine being immortalized for something that you didn’t even do and then imagine being immortalized for the worst thing you ever did.
#achilles#hyacinthus#hyacinthus being immortalized for his beauty and for the fact that he was Apollos lover#he could’ve been a good strategist#he could’ve been a good fighter#but we won’t know because they only cared about the fact that a god loved him#and we know a lot more about achilles#but his name is always used as a cautionary#his entire life is reduced to the war#and it was always going to be#eli speaks#eli rambles#Apollo when I catch you

Actually going insane over the implications of Jason asking Dick to be the Robin to his Batman in Battle for the Cowl.
Like I initially took it at the purely surface-level of Jason wanting a partner in the general sense. Which made sense, it's a huge responsibility and a lonely one so an assistant/sidekick/partner seems a no-brainer if you can get one.
But then I really thought about it, because Jason is not asking Dick to be his partner in the general sense; he's not even asking Dick to be his Nightwing. He's asking Dick to be his Robin.
And they both know exactly what Jason means: "Be the light to my darkness. Be the smile to my scowl. Be the hope to my fear. "
He's saying "Be 'Robin'; be the embodiment of Love and Justice and Goodness. Be the exceptional person that you have always been. Be the slightly-less exceptional person that I was when I wore your colors. Be the person that I was in the process of becoming and might have been (or might still be), if only Joker hadn't clipped my wings."
He's saying "I am prepared to become vengeance, become the Night. And I will go further than Bruce ever dared to, because it is what is needed. I will be the necessary evil. But you don't have to be. If Batman is Gotham's curse, Robin has always been its blessing. I will be the brutal punishment to our world, and I am asking you to be its incandescent gift."
He's saying, "Be for me, what we were for Him. Be my anchor, my comfort, my hope. Remind me what it's all for, why it's all worth it. And remind yourself as well."
He's saying "Be 'Robin' again--for both of our sakes."
#dick grayson#jason todd#battle for the cowl#jaydick#dickjay#kinda but also not kinda#batman#dcu#otp: be my robin#'we can rule together as just it always should've been with you as my guiding light and conscience'#is that not in essence; a sort of marriage proposal ?#well no but it's not NOT one either if you catch my drift#i should note that i haven't actually read bftc yet and i know it's considered controversial/bad#and considered ooc for pretty much everyone#so i am not even sure if I will like it#but i am still planning on reading it for the jaydick crumbs#and b/c i am using it and knightfall as the primary inspo for my krisnix au#apparently jason does ask tim to be his robin first and that's interesting as well#but honestly a little less powerful/interesting to me at least since jaytim just doesn't interest me as much as jaydick#and honestly i've looked at the panels and it seems a little more genuine when jason asks dick idk#more like 'last chance; i'll let you live if you join me' for tim vs. 'join me because this feels right' for dick#and honestly even with clumsy execution; just the narrative and emotional richness of this scene is still making me absolutely feral#this arc could be complete trash in any and every other way but if it gives me THEMES; i will forgive anything#it's the former english major occupational hazard#*apollo justice voice *: I'M FINE#(narrator voice: she was not in fact fine)

I always get a bit sad when I see people talk about ToA and how it’s “about Apollo learning to be human and to care for others” without ever acknowledging that ToA is also about trauma and breaking the circle and dealing with abuse. It’s such an integral part of the books* I actually give a bit of a trigger warning when it come to Meg and Nero(and later on the snippets we get of Zeus).
* Percy Jackson series as a whole to

I wish people talked about the contrast between Clytemnestra and Penelope more. Their stories are so different, and it all comes down to the way their husbands left for war. Odysseus wasn’t willing to kill his son. He went to war because he had no real choice. Meanwhile, Agamemnon literally had his daughter killed just so he could go.
Sure, people say it was because of the oath, but come on, imagine your daughter being sacrificed so your husband could go fight in a war that started because of his old crush. ALL For ANOTHERRR woman. I'm sorry, but I’ll always feel for Clytemnestra. Yeah, she made awful choices. But she was also a grieving mother, someone who lost her child and was expected to sit quietly, smile, and wait for the man who let it happen.
And I get so sad when Orestes is called a hero for killing his mother. I don’t think he was a bad person either. He was just a kid, doing what a god told him to do. He was trying to make sense of something way too big for him to carry. Honestly, they were all victims. Even Agamemnon. Everyone in this story was just trying to do what they thought they had to do and it makes me SO sad

rough sketch of Cassandra passing the Trojan horse before the fall of the city. Kinda liked the idea of her doing her own little sun themed war paint since she knows what's coming.

the problem with all these white authors like rick riordan who are revealing their stances on the israel-palestine apartheid is that they barely do anything but virtue signal when they claim “i’m on the side against war” “i’m anti-violence” “i abhor terrorism.” zero people are going to disagree with you. zero people believe what hamas did is justified. zero people think israel shouldn’t have a right to defend itself against terrorism. but that isn’t what israel is doing when they collectively punish all of palestine, who doesn’t even have an official army. when rick riordan says some wishy-washy bullshit about the violence suffered on both sides of the conflict, and words his whole dumbass blog post like it’s violence that is in any way equal, that literally helps no one. in fact, it’s so damn negligent of the 75 years of violence that palestine has suffered and been oppressed for. yes, there are innocent civilians in israel who are suffering, no one is disagreeing with you. that doesn’t erase the fact that israel is a disgusting state that has used state-sanctioned violence on a systemic scale since its conception, and the oppressed people have responded to that in violent retaliation (because OBVIOUSLY they would). israel is built on the subjugation of palestine, there is no equal suffering between the two.
#ricky when i catch you ricky#so fucking disappointed with rick and aveyard and gaiman and brown and tjr and the list goes on#it makes me so damn mad. israel doesnt need your support to genocide palestinians#was thinking about buying chalice of the gods but im probs not going to for now#maybe until i can get it secondhand. but idk if i even care to read it atp#riordanverse#rick riordan#free palestine#percy jackson#pjo#hoo#heroes of olympus#toa#trials of apollo#correct riordanverse#rewriting#what is happening to innocent israelis is horrible. but i find it funny how the world only cares when its an israeli person#suddenly every innocent palestinian who has died since israel’s conception is flattened by history to somehow be on equal terms#10000 palestinians have died since 2008. its not equal at all.#how can u say that the attacks in gaza have reached genocidal proportions and then still talk abt suffering of israel like its equal???#‘What can I do? I will continue to write books—‘ oh my god shut up#‘I will resist the urge to demonize entire groups of people.’ YAWN#‘ I will call for less violence not more violence. 🥺🥺’#‘ And when asked whose side I am on I will tell you I am on the side of humanitarianism—‘ OH MY GOD SHUT UPPP

I saw it in your tag game post that you're also fond of the Apollo-Heracles conflict 👀 for a myth that appears in only a couple of sources, it sure has a lot of presence in the vase paintings (no seriously, everytime I think I've seen the last of it, I find ten more)
SO do you have any favorites among the paintings that represent this story??
OMG OMG THIS ASK IS A GIFT. IT IS A GIFT THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR LETTING ME TALK ABOUT THIS
I also think it's extremely interesting that it's a story so popularly portrayed by vase paintings and in such a variety of ways!! It's certainly one of the stories that gets left out of written compilation of Heracles' legend a bit (which is a shame, I think it's a fantastic story) but Apollo had a very peculiar relationship with Heracles in general that I just kind of find amazing (and very, very funny).
Apollo is not a god with any legitimate grudge against Heracles, but he does argue with the mortal a bit like he argues with his favourite brothers 😂Part of why I love the story of Apollo and Heracles fighting over the tripod so much is that it is such a little brother thing for Heracles to be upset with the proclamation his elder brother has given him and so, he throws a great fit, taking up the chair and declaring that he'll just give himself a better prophecy! And Apollo, instead of being a marginally professional big brother, decides to fight him for it until their father has to break up their cat-fight. Like was that not just the plot of the Homeric Hymn to Hermes? Is this not exactly how Apollo treated Hermes when he was a child and now those two are inseparable? 💀
Because of this, my favourite vase paintings tend to be the ones that highlight the personal squabbling between Apollo and Heracles the most. There are some very elaborate ones that have the full host of them - Athena, Heracles, Apollo, Artemis, usually a dog and a doe, I've even seen a couple that had birds and plants etched on them, but the simplest ones that show Heracles about to bonk Apollo with his club out of frustration or depict Heracles nyooming away from Apollo while Apollo (presumably) yells curses about how he's going to fling Heracles head first into Tartarus for daring to take his things? Yeah, those are the premium big brother/little brother things I'm looking for.

Also the one in the Theoi.com archives is a real classic - perfect energy.
#ginger answers asks#Thank you SO much for letting me talk about this even a little it always makes me smile#Despite their disputes - if you ask me Apollo was quite fond of Heracles#And I think a big part of why I ultimately come to that conclusion is that Apollo never hinders Heracles or withholds blessings from him#He simply calls him a bitch every time he sees him and then makes his life marginally more inconvenient#like any good older brother let's be so fr#It's extremely charming to see him so playful with a mortal he's not in love with/that is not his son#Other moments of Apollo teasing Heracles includes him trying to convince Artemis not to let Heracles catch her doe when he comes#to fulfill that particular labour (again he doesn't actually try to stop it he just puts up a bit of a fuss about it)#and perhaps another of my all time favourites#Personally luring Heracles into Admetus' house so Heracles can wrestle Thanatos while Apollo rescues Alcestis#I DO NOT KNOW WHY MORE PEOPLE DON'T TALK ABOUT THE LUNACY OF APOLLO'S ADMETUS/ALCESTIS PRESERVATION PLAN#He really said “No yeah I know a guy don't worry about Death Incarnate” and then Heracles shows up at Admetus' door like this is a sitcom#The laugh track that plays in my mind every time Admetus opens that door sees Heracles and then looks back at the disguised Apollo like#'HIM?? HERACLES?? Heracles who can break me in seven pieces with a thought Heracles???'#And Apollo just gives him a thumbs up and says “feed him well pookie <33”#Genuinely some of the funniest shit I have the pleasure of reading in greek myth#Another reason I don't think Apollo has any ill will against Heracles though is how Apollo reacts when Heracles#loses Hylas in the Argonautica#Or well some versions of the Argonautica - this is also a story that changes wildly depending on the source/compilation#But Apollo is incredibly sympathetic to Heracles' sorrow and kind of decides there and then that Heracles losing one love#should be the return of another and asks that Zeus let Heracles free Prometheus when he makes his descent into the underworld#Similarly it is Apollo who anoints Alcaeus/Alcides the name Heracles (also dependent on the myth source)#They just had a very fun relationship and it's a serious shame that it's not acknowledged more#apollo#heracles#greek mythology#(Also people do not talk about the fact that Apollo grappled with Heracles to a standstill enough actually)

To me, the shock Jason felt at the stabbing was because a good Roman is not supposed to stab someone in the back— or perhaps he believed that even someone as evil as Caligula would still fight honorably, even if it’s only for the sake of tradition (and really, someone as old as Rome itself should see the value in tradition, or so an actually good Roman would think)— so he was always planning on facing Caligula when he died. He was shocked when he realized he’d be staring at the faces of his friends, instead.
