They were finally alone in the kitchen.

Jason leaned against the side of the counter. Piper leaned against the opposite one, next to her dad’s high-tech induction hob and built-in range hood.

The silence was deafening. The weight of who wasn’t there hung over them- and Piper imagined this was how Annabeth had felt when she’d held up the sky. She’d never known an absence that could feel so… heavy. It was loud, so loud that it drowned out any conversation.

They just sat in silence.

A siren wailed on a distant Los Angeles Highway.

Eventually, Jason spoke.

“We’re still not talking about-“

“I know,” Piper cut him off, not meeting Jason’s eyes, “We’re not.”

“He’s alive, Piper.”

Her heart ached. Jason was so insistent, so determined in his beliefs. His delusions. He was like a hopeful puppy dog, waiting by the door all day for his owner to come home. Piper couldn’t bear to watch his little tail wag expectantly, when she knew it was hopeless.

“Then why isn’t he here?” She asked, her cheek wet with tears, “Why isn’t he home? It’s Christmas day, and- and he’s not here. He should be here, Jason.”

“I know.”

“Then where is he?” Piper finally turned to look at the him “Lost? Stuck? In trouble? Or maybe he just doesn’t-“

The son of Jupiter stayed, standing stiff and arms-crossed, staring determinedly across the kitchen island.

“No,” Jason’s tone was firm.

“I know you’ve had that thought, Jason. H-he-“

“Don’t.”

“If he wanted to disappear, he’d know how. What if… what if he just doesn’t want to come back?”

“No. No. He’s in danger. He needs our help. And we’re just… opening presents? He’s probably off fighting for his life while we laze around drinking eggnog and watching movies. It’s not right. We should be looking for him-“

“We’ve looked, Jason,” Piper snapped, “We’ve looked. I tried another Iris message this morning and nothing. I don’t know why I even bother anymore. He’s not here. He’s gone. He’s never coming back.”

“You don’t know that,” Jason had a stern look in his eyes. He didn’t show it often, but at this moment Piper really did believe he had been raised by wolves.

Piper turned away from him, gripping the high-end quartz worktop until her knuckles turned white. “I can’t with this. I just… can’t. I can’t torture myself with the hoping and waiting. Wondering if he’s just… no. It’s better to believe that he’s dead.”

“I can’t believe you!” Jason’s voice was raised, his tone outraged, “How could you even say that when he could be in trouble? For all we know he could be stuck and calling out for help, he needs us, Piper-“

Piper kept gripping the countertop, staring up at the kitchen cabinets. “Jason, we are not having this argument. Not again. Not at Christmas.”

Piper could hear Jason scowling. “So that’s it? You’re just gonna move on? And forget-“

“Forget?!” Piper cried, finally turning to face him “You think I can forget that explosion? How I watched my best friend- my first real friend- go up in ash and fire?”

“Piper-“

“You think I can forget the months of uncertainty, not knowing if he was okay, if he was in trouble, if somehow that message was faked? You think I can forget his face, his laugh, his stupid little jokes? He is… was my best friend, Jason. Of course I can never forget. I miss him. Every. Day. It’s just… it’s too quiet without him.”

Piper searched and searched, but she couldn’t find the right thing to say to turn herself around. She had the magic voice- she was the encourager, the soother. But here… she was lost. Just lost.

She wanted Jason to wrap his arms around her, and hold her tight.

She broke down sobbing.

Jason stayed there, silent.

You’d think after a week of these I’d have enough of the Lost Trio, but no.

I know the event is over, but tagging @lost-trio-week anyway because I did technically write this for the event, I just thought of things that would fit the prompts better. Also not technically Lost Trio as they don’t even say Leo’s name (because they can’t bring themselves to. Hahahaha I’m evil) but it’s a fic very much about Leo and the trio’s relationship.

Also happy Christmas (If you celebrate)!! Whether today is a normal day or not, I hope y’all are having a better 25th of December than Jason and Piper are having in the fic. I realise most of you are busy and won’t read this today but I like posting fics on the dates they’re set on. Sue me.

In the interest of acknowledging great works by fandom writers, DemigodPolls is going to share a big year-end collection of 2024 Percy Jackson fanfic recommendations! In the comment section below or on this AO3 post, leave recommendations for the best PJO fanfics you've read - but there is one major rule: they MUST have been published or last updated in 2024! No exceptions! Reblogs are turned on, but please do NOT leave your recommendations in the reblogs/tags! They will not be considered! can I recommend multiple things?

yes! just make sure to categorize them correctly under the relevant prompts.

can I recommend my own story?

yes, but you are highly, highly encouraged to simultaneously recommend at least one other fanfic that you yourself did not write - let's spread the love! (not required)

is smut okay?

yes! but you must specify clearly that the story contains smut in your comment, and please don't use explicit/overly sexual language in your recommendation. I also reserve the right to refuse to consider stories that contain k*nks I don't want to engage with. (ab0, hardcore bd$m, parental name k*nk to name a few)

are non-english fanfics okay?

you are absolutely welcome to recommend non-english fanfics to others in the comments! but I will not be able to put them on the final recommendation list, because I only speak english and I cannot personally vet their contents, cannot observe their grammar, and could be terribly misled by a translator. I'm very sorry! however, if you would like to put together a similar recommendation collection of non-english stories, I'd be happy to promote it on this blog.

is percico okay?

someone asked about this specifically, so here's my stance: percico is a controversial pairing due to the debated inappropriateness of the canon age gap (approx. 3 years). I personally consider 3 years between minors to be juuust beyond my comfort zone (2 years), so please respect my decision to abide by my own comfortability and refuse to consider stories that feature age gaps of this size or larger involving minors. however, you can recommend percico fics where the age gap is explicitly made smaller, or fics where nico and percy are both explicitly adults! this same rule applies to any other ship in a similar circumstance - check the wiki for canon ages if you're unsure! (and to be clear, this is solely about ages, not about the individual merit of the pairing itself. respectfully - this is me drawing a boundary about what I am comfortable with, so do not argue with me on this topic).

is caleo okay?

this pair is even more controversial nowadays, so here's my stance when it comes to weird magical circumstances: within the logic of the pjo universe, some things that seem strange from a mortal perspective are standard within the books. i.e., it's not weird to date fellow demigods, even if the person you're dating is technically your aunt/uncle/cousin/etc. likewise, it's not "weird" for a teenager to date an immortalized or de-immortalized teenager, because... I genuinely don't know, that's just how the book logic works. for that reason, caleo works are accepted. we're going to apply this same logic to pairs like theyna, which could also potentially have murky circumstances (although I do consider thaluke to be especially iffy, because it heavily depends on the situation that people write them in - so if you're unsure, go ahead and submit it, and I'll use my best judgement from there). however, I cannot begin to express my extreme disinterest in discourse about immortal dating ethics - like, I would rather do anything else. not trying to be sassy here, but I'm going to ask you guys to not pick a fight about these topics, for the simple reason that I have zero interest in debating over situations that could never occur in real-life.

are incomplete/discontinued stories okay?

yes! I'd prefer stories that have at least three chapters, but this is not required. completed one-shots are also fine!

If someone already recommended a story that I like, should I vouch for it?

if you would like to, then absolutely!! you can respond to the appropriate prompt from this account in the comments, or you can reply to the person making the recommendation. just make sure to explicitly state which story you're advocating for.

One thing that would’ve made the Jason/Piper arc SO much more interesting was if they actually explored the fact that they are probably one of the first Greco-Roman couples in several centuries.

Like imagine the shit that Jason- the Perfect Golden-Boy Praetor- would’ve gotten at CJ for dating a Graecus. He was expected to be a good soldier, and uphold Roman values. And it would’ve been a great accessory to his arc of feeling separated from Camp Jupiter and his Romanness.

And that’s a ship that’s canon, and it’s not talked about at all.

But you know what would’ve made it better? You know what the pressure of living up to the expectations of being in a certain type of couple to uphold a standard of life is a PERFECT METAPHOR FOR?

Queerness. Jason being in a relationship with a Greek being frowned upon by the Romans being a metaphor for being in a same-sex relationship would’ve fit so well. ESPECIALLY considering actual history and how Roman society viewed the very fruitiness of the Greeks, and thought they were superior than them because of it (that’s probably an oversimplification, but still).

My point, as always, is Valgrace should’ve been canon.

Head in the clouds with you, love

Since no one can stop me from treating tumblr as my self-exploration project, I want to share some thoughts on Jason/Piper ship. I’ve always felt the biggest fondness for canon pairings, which is hard to explain - maybe I just believe in author’s abilities to prove me right about relationships they’re talking about. For me, the journey of these two demigods, represented in no less than five books, was believable enough. It was a journey of trust and first love and exploration, willingness to show your best and worst sides to the other person. In fact, for me it felt the strongest after Percabeth, who had much more time and space for development. Hence when I found out about events of ToA, I felt disheartened to continue exploring Riordanverse. It probably coincided with me outgrowing these books, but I prefer leaving them at that ending of Blood of Olympus - bittersweet, unsurely hoping for the future together.

There’s a shared loneliness between all the members of the seven, and there are many conversations we didn’t get to see - midnight talks of Jason and Piper, being children of movie stars with vastly different childhoods, him telling her of the wolves and growing amongst army discipline, her sharing of LA memories and never having a loyal friend beside her before their meeting. Amusingly, books about lonely kids going on road trips in small groups are really lacking in those calm character bits.

Nevertheless, I feel like pjo and hoo series supported me a lot in my teenage years, being one of a few fandoms focused around teens going through immense struggles and falling in love in the meantime. That’s the one thing for me, long time a grown up, still hasn’t changed.
