Summary: âWhereâs Jason?â
The moment the words left Leoâs mouth, Piper crumpled against him, sobbing uncontrollably.
Leo wrapped his arms around her, more impulse than conscious choice. His trembling fingers bunched up the fabric of her shirt.
âPiper, what the hell happened?â he asked. He looked around, and, seeing everyoneâs grave expressions, he felt like he was eight years old again, sitting in the back of an ambulance, waiting for the paramedics to tell him that his mom was gone. He couldnât breathe. âTell me- tell me heâs not-â
He couldnât get the words out. Couldnât even begin to consider what it would mean if heâd failed to cheat the prophecyâif after everything theyâd been through, he would never get to see Jason again. To his immense relief, Piper shook her head.
âHeâs not- but Leo, itâs bad. Jason is really, really hurt, and we donât have any stupid ambrosia left, and-â The rest of her sentence was swallowed by another bout of sobs. She was trembling like a leaf in Leoâs arms. âWeâre not sure heâs going to make it.â
Written for @lost-trio-week Day 6: Reunion
Word Count: 6k
Rating: Teen and Up
TW for major character injury (Jason for the love of god please stop getting stabbed so much)
I did say I wanted to post two fics today, and I stuck to that, despite the fact that itâs currently absolutely unreasonable hours of the morning. I allowed myself exactly one heavy angst fic for the event, and itâs this one! Lots and lots and lots of hurt/comfort in this one. As with the other ones, some Valgrace thatâs tied into a larger plot focused on the fact that all three of them care about each other so, so very much.
âââ
Leo could tell something was wrong the moment Festus touched down on the beach.
Everyone was looking at him, sure, but it was almost like they were looking through him. Not a single person managed to make eye contact.
Leo honestly wouldn't have minded thisâdirect eye contact felt really uncomfortable to him a lot of the timeâbut heâd learned over the years that when other people avoided eye-contact, it usually meant bad news.
For a moment, he was too caught up in his relief that Lester and Meg and Piper were fine to really let himself think about this, though.
He just went through the line of people and hugged everyone.
He paused in front of Piperâthere was so much he needed to say to her, and he wasnât sure sheâd appreciate a hug before heâd properly apologized.
âPipes, I-â he started, but then she looked up at him with red-rimmed eyes and everything stopped. Terror grasped his heart. âWhereâs Jason?â
Leo hadnât registered Jasonâs absence as weird at first. He hadnât known for sure Jason would be here. With everything going on in the demigod world, there could have been plenty of reasons he was busy elsewhere.
Please let it be that, he thought.
But the moment the words left his mouth, Piper crumpled against him, sobbing uncontrollably.Â
She was trembling like a leaf in Leoâs arms. âWeâre not sure heâs going to make it.â
âPipes, hey, breathe,â Leo said gently, trying and failing to take his own advice on the matter. He couldnât get a handle on his racing heart, but his arms around Piper felt a little steadier now. Hurt, even badly hurt, was a million times more manageable than dead. âJasonâs going to be okay. Heâs way too stubborn to just die on us after everything weâve been through.â
He said it with more confidence than he felt.
âItâs a miracle heâs even alive at all,â Lester said quietly. âBut with the condition heâs in-â
âHeâs going to be okay,â Leo repeated, because the alternative was unthinkable. Jason was going to be fine. Theyâd survived a lot of impossible shit together. He had to be okay.
Besides, Apolloâ Lester âwasnât the god of medicine right now. He wasnât really the god of anything right now. That was sort of the point.Â
What did he know, anyway?
âWhere is he?â Leo asked, trying to ignore the anxious lump in his throat. âCan I see him?â
âInside. Coach Hedge is with him,â Piper said immediately, slowly breaking the embrace. âCome on. Letâs go see Jason.â
~~~~
The former McLean mansion felt like a setting straight out of a horror movie. It was way too big, all the furniture was gone and the floorboards creaked as they walked inside. Piperâs hand was trembling in Leoâs as she led him down the hall to a room that smelled strangely of a mixture of disinfectant, mushrooms and gatorade.
Much like the other rooms, this one also didnât have much furniture, with the exception of a lonely mattress. It was the most makeshift sick room Leo had ever seen. A bunch of supplies were loosely strewn aboutâsome meds and bandages that had clearly been taken from a regular medical kit, along with what looked like sticks and moss and various other plants that he guessed were Hedgeâs contribution.
Leo barely had the brain space to take in any of it. Instantly, his attention zeroed in on the mattress.Â
Jason was pale as death. What Leo could see of his chest was wrapped in bandages. It rose and fell slowly, which was the only outward sign that Jason was alive at all.
Coach Hedge was sitting at his bedside and pressing a piece of cloth to his forehead.
âStill no change,â he said somberly. âThe nature magic I used barely helped.â
âThanks for trying,â Piper said quietly, squeezing Leoâs hand so tightly that it hurt.Â
Leo had no room to complain. He was squeezing back just as hard.
âYeah. Iâm sure Jason appreciates it,â he agreed, trying not to think about the way Hedgeâs attempt at sports medicine had looked and smelled when heâd tried to help with Piperâs broken ankle.
He knew the satyr meant well, and besides, Jason looked like he could use all the help he could get.
Hedge whirled around.Â
âValdez?â His eyes were wide with shock. âWe thought you died!â
âYeah.â Leo shrugged, eyes wandering back down to Jasonâs too-still form. âI got better.âÂ
âIâd kick you across the room, but luckily for you, Mellieâs putting Chuck to bed right now,â Hedge said, his expression an attempt at fury that was dampened slightly by the fact that his eyes were misty. âHe should be here for this. I need to set a good example,â he continued before Leo could attribute the first statement to the fact that he might not want to wake his sleeping child or something equally absurd.
âGood to see you, too,â Leo said, giving Hedge a weak smile. He dragged Piper along as he kneeled down by Jasonâs side.Â
âHey. Iâm back,â Piper said, gripping Jasonâs hand. Her voice was quavering. âLeoâs here, too.â
Jason didnât react. His eyes stayed firmly shut.Â
Leo carefully reached out to touch his friendâs face. Jasonâs skin felt cold and clammy, and it made Leo ill with terror.
But being so close to Jason meant he could at least hear his breaths.
Alive. Alive. Alive.
âWe managed to free the Sibyl,â Piper continued, undeterred by the tears that had started to stream down her cheeks again. âSheâs safe now. We couldnât have managed it without your help.â
Jasonâs unconscious form was unmoved.
âIâve got some nectar left. Itâs not much, but itâs probably better than nothing,â Leo said, rummaging through his bag for his flask. He cursed himself for not refilling it before heâd left Camp Jupiter.Â
He hadnât even considered asking if they could spare any. Not with the amount of people that were wounded. Not with another battle still looming on the horizon. Besides, heâd figured what he had would be enough, considering heâd be heading out of danger.Â
Gods, he was such an idiot.
Piperâs face lit up just slightly when he produced the flask, despite the fact that it was nearly empty.
âWe should wait until heâs a little more conscious, but yes, this will help.â
âWhat happened to him?â Leo asked, not sure he actually wanted to know the answer.Â
âI-â Piper gulped, hard. He wasnât sure what she saw, but her eyes had gone distant. He pulled her back into his chest.
âSorry. You donât have to talk about it if itâs too hard.âÂ
âI donât know the details,â Hedge took over for her, âbut he got a spear through his chest and a bunch of ocean in his lungs. Ocean generally isnât great for children of Jupiter, even when itâs not in their lungs. Heâs been out cold since yesterday.â
âI donât know what Iâll do if he doesnât wake up.â Piperâs voice was awfully broken and quiet.Â
Leo couldnât stand it. He couldnât stand any of this. Not the way she obviously blamed herself. Not his own fear. Not Jasonâs pale face or his bandaged chest or how ragged his breaths sounded.
What Leo said next was reckless, and stupid, and also horribly insensitive. He couldnât say he cared very much. Heâd spent ages traveling, trying to get back to his friends. The only reason heâd made it through all these months of fighting monsters and camping out in the wilderness, which had been terribly reminiscent of the time he spent on the streets, was thinking about thisâbeing back with Piper and Jason. Finally having a home to go back to where heâd be welcomed with open arms, mad as the inhabitants would probably be at him for disappearing for so long.
He didnât have it in him to be sensitive or reasonable or smart when there was still a chance heâd have half that home ripped away from him.
âOh, heâd better wake up. Iâm never talking to him again if he doesnât,â Leo said, crossing his arms. He was furious. At himself for leaving and at the world who kept ripping all of his loved ones away from him and especially at his stupid best friend and the fact that he always had to play the fucking hero. âYou hear that, Jason? I swear on the Styx, if you die on us right now, I will spend our whole afterlife ignoring you. I mean it. I did not go through all that nonsense with the physicianâs cure for you to croak the moment I get back here.â
He learned later that a broken Styx oath was half the reason they were in this mess. He had time to feel a little bad about what heâd said, then.
Right now, though, Jasonâs fingers twitched in Piperâs trembling hands, and Leo couldnât bring himself to regret a damn thing.
****
The sun had dipped below the horizon an hour ago.Â
Piper was curled up in a sleeping bag, staring intently at Jasonâs sick bed.
Her father was in one of the other rooms in an old sleeping bag of his own, probably fast asleep. He was trying his best to helpâhe had made her and Leo a truly disastrous meal in an attempt to make sure they ateâbut it was clear he didnât understand the situation. Piper wasnât sure what the Mist was showing him, exactly, but it must have had a hell of a time trying to make sense of the fact that theyâd chosen to treat their severely injured friend with homebrew medical supplies in the house they no longer owned instead of calling an ambulance.Â
Hedge and Mellie had left for Aeithales a few hours ago, hoping to fetch some more demigod-grade medical supplies. She doubted theyâd be back before tomorrow afternoon.Â
It would have been more effective to just take Jason thereâ safer, too âbut they couldnât move him while he was in this state, so this was the best they could do.Â
Piper had offered to come, hoping that doing something proactive might help her feel a little better about everything that had happened, but Mellie had put a hand on her shoulder and told her âyour friend needs you. Both of you,â and that had been that.
Piper was exhausted, so she probably should have slept, but she didnât. It had been three days since sheâd last so much as napped for half an hour.
She couldnât bring herself to sleep. Couldnât bring herself to take her eyes off her injured friend. Guilt was gnawing at her, hollowing out her chest until there was nothing left.Â
She was supposed to protect Jason like heâd always protected her, and sheâd failed him, in the same way she always seemed to fail her loved ones.
She was fifteen and her absentee goddess mom had to save her father because Piper wasnât strong enough.Â
She was sixteen and Leo didnât trust her with his plan or the real physicianâs cure, and then he was gone, and she couldnât do a damn thing. Couldnât find him, no matter how desperately she tried.Â
She was almost seventeen and Jason was comatose because her powers had failed her when sheâd needed them the most.Â
Her mother was the goddess of love, for crying out loud. Her love for her friends should have been her greatest strength.Â
It wasnât. Her love was a dagger that she only ever managed to point at her own chest. Piper loved herself bloody, and it was never enough.
Every time she closed her eyes, she was back on that damned yacht. She saw the determined expression on Jasonâs face, then the spear through his chest. She saw Jason stumbling into the chasm where the yacht was breaking apart, dropping like a rock.
She knew she couldnât change what had happened.Â
She still tried to reach for him every time. And every time, her hands grasped empty air.
She kept having to remind herself that Tempest had slowed Jasonâs fall and dragged him back out of the water, but it barely helped. Nothing really seemed to help, with the exception of watching the slow rise and fall of Jasonâs chest. Any time she turned away from him, she was afraid she might have imagined itâthat she might turn back and find his body utterly still.
âPipes?â Leo asked, looking up from where he was sitting on the floor. âYou good?â
Having Leo back by her side should have been comforting, but it felt much the same way Jasonâs survival didâlike a dream she would wake up from any moment now.
Piper was used to waiting. She had spent much of her early childhood waiting for a mother who had never come back. Later, sheâd spent ages waiting for her fatherâto come home, to visit her at school, to remember she existed for more than a few days a year.
She was great at waiting for things that would never happen. She had no previous experience with waiting for things that did.
Sheâd stopped hoping Leo would come back a long time ago. Now that he had, she wasnât sure how to handle it. She kept waiting for the other shoe to dropâfor Leo to dissolve into Mist like the rest of her life had.
âFine,â she lied, moving closer to where he was sitting. Leo wasnât doing much better than her, sleep-wise, but unlike Piper, heâd at least found himself something useful to do. Currently, he was in the process of inspecting one of Aurumâs diamond eyes that had come loose. Piper looked down to where the two dog automatons were lying in sleep mode, heart clenching again. âHowâs it looking? Theyâre gonna be okay, right? Reyna will probably kill me if any of the damage is permanent.â
Aurum and Argentum had gotten pretty banged up dragging Calligula off Jason. Theyâd retaliated, getting in a few nasty strikes that would have been satisfying to watch if Piperâs heart hadnât been dropping to the bottom of the ocean at the same time. Now, the damage theyâd taken was just another item on the ever-growing list of Piperâs failures.
She hated the thought of anything happening to the dogs. Sheâd seen the way Reyna interacted with themâthe fond smiles and head scratches and the inadvisable treats she snuck them whenever she thought no one was looking.Â
To say Reyna struggled to let herself be soft would be the understatement of the year. But it was obvious to anyone with eyes that she loved her dogs to death, and after everything that had happened to her, the last thing Piper wanted was for her to lose them, too.
ââCourse I can fix them. But you know Reyna wouldnât have given you the whistle if she hadnât wanted you to use it, right?â Leo asked, putting aside the diamond before reaching out to touch her arm. âOne of the first things she did when I got to Camp Jupiter was ask about you, and not in a âIâm worried sheâs gonna wreck my automatonsâ-way.â
âI justâŚâ Piper balled her hands into fists, losing the fight against her tears. âAll of this is my fault. If I had-â
âBeauty Queen, hey. Donât be stupid,â Leo said gently, pulling her into his arms. âThereâs lots of people you could blame. Calligula is a really obvious one. Or Lester and his dumbass oath. Or, you know, me. Never yourself, though. None of this was on you.â
Piper looked at him with a startled expression. âWhy in the world should I blame you? You werenât even there.â
Leo deflated against her chest. âYeah. Exactly.â
âLeoâŚâÂ
âI thought I could cheat the stupid prophecy,â Leo sniffled, holding her tightly. It was like her crying had made his dam break, too. âBut I couldnât. And now Jasonâs hurt, and I- I wasnât there.He could have died because I wasnât there.â
âI think you did cheat your prophecy,â Piper told him, squeezing him back just as tightly. âItâs not your fault we failed to cheat ours.â
âThe gods really seem to have it out for us,â Leo said, huffing a half-laugh, half-sob against her shoulder. He felt warm, in the nice, soothing way he always had. âWhy else would we get so many shitty death prophecies, huh?â
âYeah. I think we should get a refund on this whole demigod experience. I want my money back.â
âTell me about it.â Leo opened his mouth to say something elseâlikely to make another joke, no matter how hollow it rangâbut then he froze. âJason?â
Piper turned, feeling cold as ice at the realization that sheâd taken her eyes off him for a moment. She was terrified of what she would find.
But Jasonâs chest still rose and fell steadily. More than thatâhe was moving his head, blinking in obvious confusion.
Leo and Piper were by his side in an instant.Â
âHey buddy,â Leo said shakily. âHow are you feeling?â
âHurts,â Jason rasped, wincing when Piper touched his face.
âYeah, I know. Iâm sorry,â she told him, her lip wobbling. Jasonâs eyes were glassy, and his skin felt way too warm. âShit, I think heâs running a fever. Leo, we need-â
âOn it,â Leo announced, already elbow-deep in his tool belt.Â
With all the months theyâd been separated, Piper had almost forgotten how naturally these things came to them.Â
She remembered sitting at Jasonâs bedside, re-bandaging the stab wound in his abdomen that refused to heal. Remembered Leo handing her bandages and disinfectant and holding Jasonâs shoulders steady to make sure he didnât move too much.
Theyâd done this before. They hadnât needed words, then. They wouldnât need them now.
For the first time in months, Piper actually felt like things might be okay.
****
Jason woke up tasting cocoa. He only knew three things for certain. One: from what he remembered, him waking up should not have been a thing. Two: everything hurt. Three: everyone was mad at him.
Things had been hazy and painful for a while. He could tell that people were speaking around him, but despite the fact that his aching head couldnât seem to properly process the words, he could tell that the voices sounded upset. He was pretty sure that was his fault.
Everything was blurry and dark and a cold, wet thing was on his forehead and he couldnât make sense of any of it.
âYouâre gonna be okay,â someone said from the darkness, barely more than a blurry shape. Jason knew the voice, but he couldnât remember how he knew it. He tried to make out the personâs features, but the harder he tried to focus, the more the image in front of his eyes swam. âWhat do you need?â
He registered he was trembling, mostly because it made his pain worse, but he couldnât get his body to stop.
He wanted to ask for- Jason wasnât actually sure what he was going to ask for. Something warm, probably. A blanket, maybe. Something to make the trembling stop.
But that wasnât what came out of his mouth when he opened it.
âI wanna go home,â he said instead, feeling incredibly childish. âPlease.â
There was a pause.
âYou mean camp?â a different voice asked. It was just as familiar as the first, but something about it was strange, too. Jason hadnât heard that voice in months. He didnât know why, but hearing it kind of made him want to cry. âDude, you got skewered less than a week ago. Weâre not making a fucking cross-country trip right now.â
âNo,â Jason said, feeling whiny and desperate. He didnât care about camp right now. Camp hadnât felt like home in forever. âI just want Piper and Leo.â
âOh,â the second person said, voice quavering. Hands gripped his. Strangely, one of them felt several degrees warmer than the other. âJeez, how out of it are you?â
For a moment, Jason struggled to process the questionâwhich was probably an answer in and of itself. But then he remembered.Â
Remembered that Leo had been gone for months and the only way heâd be seeing him again was making it to Elysium. Remembered the prophecy that had told him it had to be him or Piper. And heâd woken up, which meant it hadnât been him, no matter how much heâd wanted it to be.Â
If he was alive, that had to mean-
Jason wanted to cry. His lungs wouldnât work right. The already blurry world grew even blurrier around him.Â
âJason? Jason, youâre okay. Breathe.â The hands squeezed his tighter. Fingers combed gently through his hair. The voice was so sweet that all thoughts vanished from his head until he could remember nothing except how to breathe, despite the horrible ache in his lungs.
âThere you go. Thatâs better. No more stupid moves, alright, Superman?â the other blurry shape told him. âPiper and I are getting real sick of patching you up constantly.â
Finally, the voice slotted into its rightful place in Jasonâs fever-addled brain, and now he felt like crying for a completely different reason.Â
âLeo?â he asked weakly, then coughed a few times, which did really awful things to his aching chest.
âGods, itâs been, what, six months? Did you already forget what I look like?â Leo asked, teasing and concerned and alive.
âNo. You're just really blurry,â Jason told him, attempting to blink the spots out of his eyes without any success. Like he could ever forget what Leo looked like. Like he hadnât spent the past months filling an entire sketchbook with portraits because he was terrified heâd forget the slightest detail. âMy head hurts.â
âOf course it does.â Leo sighed. âPlease tell me he didnât get concussed again. At this rate, itâs a miracle he even remembers his own name.â
âActually, Iâm the one who ended up concussed this time. We decided we needed some variety,â the other voice said, and this time Jason knew it was Piper. She was okay. Theyâd both made it.Â
âYeah, I get it. Gotta switch things up occasionally,â Leo joked.
Jason was exhausted and everything hurt, but he didnât care. Piper and Leo were right here with him, and nothing else mattered.
He was home.
~~~~
The next time Jason woke, someone had switched on the sun and his surroundings werenât nearly as blurry.
âMorning, Sleeping Beauty. Feeling better?â
Leo was leaning over him. Jason could properly make out his features now that it wasnât the middle of the night and he wasnât quite as hazy with fever.
Leo had strange highlights in his hair, and it had grown a little longer since Jason had last seen him, but other than that, his best friend looked almost the same he had eight months ago. With a sting in his chest that was entirely unrelated to his injuries, Jason realized Leo also looked worn out in the same way he always had back on the Argo. His shoulders were slumped and he had deep rings under his eyes.
Jason couldnât stop staring at him. Couldnât process the fact that looking at Leo was a thing he got to do again.
Leo raised an eyebrow.Â
âAre you checking me out?â he teased, smiling widely despite his obvious exhaustion.
The next thing Jason did was probably ill-advised, medically speaking, but he couldnât stop himself. Wouldnât have wanted to, even if he could have. He pushed himself up into a seated position and wrapped his whole body around Leo.
The pain came a moment later, bad enough to almost be blinding, but Jason didnât care. As far as he was concerned, he was never letting Leo go again, no matter how badly it hurt.
âWe thought you died,â he said breathlessly. The tears came unbidden.Â
Jason had never really allowed himself to cry much. He hadnât had time for it, and besides, it hadnât felt like his place when he was supposed to be the brave, competent leader at all times.Â
Crying in front of other people wasnât a thing he could ever remember doing.
But he was past the point of caring about that right now, because his best friend was alive and breathing and so, so warm against his chest, and that was the only thing in the world that mattered.
âDude, stop!â Leo said immediately, eyes wide with alarm. âYouâve got two broken ribs and a hole in the middle of your chest! Youâre going to hurt yourself!â
âI donât care,â Jason insisted, holding him tighter. âI thought Iâd never get to hug you again.â
âI love you to death, okay?â Leo told him, sounding exasperated. He squeezed Jason just slightly, for barely half a second, before he expertly wiggled himself out of the embrace. âBut it took me days to finally coax Piper into getting some rest. If she wakes up and youâre worse off than you were when she went to sleep, sheâs going to kill me, and I doubt I can get her to nap for as much as half an hour again if that happens.â
He gestured vaguely to the other end of the mattress where Piper was curled up like a cat, snoring softly.
She was alive. All three of them were alive.Â
Jason still couldnât fully believe it.
âIâm not going to-â Jason started, wincing when he lowered himself back down onto the mattress. âOw.â
âTold you so,â Leo commented, but he didnât look very happy about it. âTake it easy and get better, okay? Then we can maybe renegotiate the hugging thing.â
âYou suck,â Jason told him, but he couldnât stop smiling.Â
Leo was okay. They were all okay.
âOh, I know.â Leo grinned. âIâm about to suck a lot worse, too. Hedge made more of that sports medicine stuff. Full disclosure, weâre not sure if it really does anything, but at worst, I figure making you take shitty meds will discourage you from getting stabbed a third time.â
âItâs not like I did it on purpose,â Jason grimaced, but he did drink obediently.Â
Swallowing sucked. His throat hurt and his mouth felt parched and the strange liquid didnât really help with either of those facts.
But, weirdly enough, he didnât mind the taste too much.
âThis actually isnât that bad.â
Leo looked at him strangely, then turned towards where Piper was sleeping.Â
âPipes, are we sure he isnât concussed?â She just continued to snore softly in response. âIâm gonna take that as a no.â
âIs Piper okay?â Jason asked, trying to sit up again to take a proper look at her. âShe didnât get hurt, did she?â
âNuh-uh. None of that. Youâre resting,â Leo protested, gently pressing his shoulder back down onto the mattress. âPiperâs not hurt. Sheâs just really tired. I think sheâd be significantly more fine if her dumbass best friends would stop dying in front of her face, though.â
Jason winced. âI promised her I wouldnât do anything stupid. But we were all going to die, and I just- I couldnât lose anyone else.â
âDude, Piperâs the one you have to apologize to, not me. I may not be happy about it, but I get it. I did the same damn thing, remember?â
Like Jason could ever forget. Like he hadnât spent months dreaming of the burning sky.Â
He reached out to grip Leoâs handâwarm and calloused and just enough to remind him that Leo was fine.
âLetâs just agree not to do that anymore, okay?âÂ
âYeah, deal. Iâve died more than enough for one lifetime.â Leo grinned, but then his smile wavered. âSo, youâre- uh- youâre probably wondering where the hell I disappeared to for so long.â
âLeo-â Jason started, trying to express just how little he cared in this current moment. That the only thing that mattered to him was that Leo was alive.
Leo went on talking like Jason hadnât said anything.
âNo, I get it. Itâs a fair question. Also, youâre allowed to be mad at me. Everyoneâs mad at me.â Leo rubbed the back of his neck anxiously. âI sort of went back for Calypso.â
âOh.âÂ
Something clenched in Jasonâs chest. He hoped it wasnât showing on his faceâJasonâs messy feelings were his problem, not Leoâsâbut from the way Leoâs face fell, it was obvious he could tell something was up.Â
âSee? Told you youâd be upset with me.â
âIâm not upset with you. I just-â Jason sighed. âAre you twoâŚ?â
Leo looked confused, then utterly baffled in a way that immediately melted the ice in Jasonâs chest.Â
âI didnât go back for her because I was in love with her. I knew this girl for like, a week, tops.â Leo laughed. âI went back for her because sheâs been stuck on an island for three thousand years and that fucking sucks.â
 âOh.â Now Jason just felt like an idiot. âSo youâre not dating?â
âNah. Weâre not even very good at being friends, honestly. We argued almost the whole way back here. But sheâs free now, and the Waystation seems to make her happy. She deserves that.â Leo shook his head. âDid you seriously think I ditched you guys to get a girlfriend? Wow, if thatâs what everyone assumed itâs no wonder I got punched so much.â
Jason froze.
âWhat do you mean, you got punched?â
âEveryone at Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter was really mad at me for disappearing the way I did. People lined up to hit me. It was a whole thing.â Leo shrugged. The nonchalant way he said it made Jason feel nauseous. âSo, yeah, if you think youâre feeling good enough to punch me, you and Piper still get a freebie. If you wanna yell at me instead, thatâs cool, too. Iâm not picky.â
Before Leo could say anything else, Jason had wrapped him in his arms again.
âJason! Seriously, stop sitting up! This isnât- if you make yourself worse-â Leo protested, but this time Jason didnât let him go. He didnât care that it hurt. He couldnât just lie there and listen to Leo talk about himself like that.
âIâm not going to hurt you,â Jason said, holding him tightly, feeling incredibly angry at the fact that he lived in a world where Leo needed that reassurance at all. âNobody should hurt you just because theyâre mad at you.â
âIt wasnât that bad,â Leo insisted, but he was trembling slightly against Jasonâs chest. âBesides, I sort of deserved it.â
âNo, you didnât.â Jason spoke softly into his hair. âYou really, really didnât.â
Leo didnât say anything else. He just let his head drop onto Jasonâs shoulder and cried.
A moment later, the mattress moved and another pair of arms wrapped around both of them.
âGods, I let myself sleep for three hours and suddenly youâre not resting and youâve managed to make Leo cry. What in the world did you two get up to?â Piper complained groggily.Â
Jason wasnât surprised theyâd woken her upâthey hadnât exactly been quiet even before Leo had broken down sobbing.Â
There were so many things Jason probably should have said to Piper.Â
Thank you for saving me, for one. And, sorry I got myself stabbed.
But he wasnât sure how to say any of those things. Since the breakup, heâd barely known how to talk to her in general. Things had been so weird between them in the last few months, and he had no idea how to fix that.
He ignored everything he didnât have words for, and instead chose to just say âLeo got punched.â
âWhat?â Piper blinked at him. âDid he annoy Hedge or something?â
âNot right now,â Jason explained, then relayed everything Leo had just told him to Piper.
Unlike Jason, who had been more concerned than anything, Piper just got angry.
âNames. I need names,â she demanded immediately. âWhose idea was this? I swear, when Iâm done with them, theyâll wish-â
âOkay, calm down!â Leo let out a startled laugh. âGuys, I appreciate this, seriously, but can we just group hug for now and put the murder plotting off until later?â
âI guess,â Piper grumbled. âAs long as we will do it later.â
Jason had a feeling the later in question would be applied to a variety of things beyond murder plans, but right now, he couldnât bring himself to think about everything theyâd still have to deal with. Not when things were finally starting to feel normal again.
~~~~
Jason had managed to tear his stitches.Â
Leo and Piper would not stop chiding him about this for the following half an hour as Mellie patched him back up and redid his bandages, which she covered in truly ridiculous amounts of aloe vera for reasons Jason didnât entirely understand. If nothing else, at least the sensation was soothing.
In the end, he was sentenced back to bed rest.
When he told his friends he didnât really feel like sleeping because heâd already spent the last few days unconscious, Piper suggested they watch a movie, so that was what they did. Leo got a miniature projector out of his tool belt that painted a large rectangular image on the ceiling, and then the three of them just laid there together, watching the movie and sharing the snacks that also came out of Leoâs tool belt. The movie was about talking cars that were also large robots, which Jason was pretty sure would have gone entirely over his head even if he hadnât still been slightly feverish and his aching chest hadnât made it impossible to focus. He didnât really care that he didnât understand the movie, though. Leo had picked it, and therefore heâd already decided he was going to like it, even if he couldnât follow the plot.
Leo spent the first thirty minutes of the movie quietly mouthing along the words, which was endearing beyond anything Jason had ever witnessed. Then, suddenly, he was fast asleep with his head on Jasonâs shoulder, radiating a soothing warmth.Â
Piper didnât speak. For a brief moment, Jason thought she might try to start a conversation about everything that had happened, but then she closed her mouth again, maybe deciding to save it for when he wasnât distracted by pain and she wasnât exhausted.
Instead, she just reached out and took his hand, squeezing it hard.
Jason knew she would forgive him, then.Â
Lying there sandwiched between his best friends, the pain in Jasonâs chest ceased to matter. He couldnât remember the last time heâd felt so completely safe and content.
Home had meant a number of things to Jason over the years. As a small child, from what little he remembered, home had meant people arguing and only ever feeling safe in his sisterâs arms. With Lupa, home had meant protection in exchange for him proving his worth. Growing up in New Rome, home had meant chores and responsibilities and others looking to him for guidance.Â
Jason was still getting used to the fact that it could mean other people taking care of him, too. That it could mean just existing in other peopleâs spaces and being loved for it, even if you had nothing beyond your own love to give in return.
And the quiet, selfish part of him that grew steadily louder told him that, given him the choice, he would always choose thisâthat he would always choose them âfor as long as he lived.Â
Fic Notes:
-Hey, I had to do at least one angsty piece of Injury Hurt/Comfort fic for this event, right? Iâve got a brand to stick to.
-Fun fact about this fic: I originally came up with the concept in the context of a completely different, far sillier valgrace fic that I have yet to finish. Part of the reason I didnât finish it at the time was that I wanted it to be silly but then I started coming up with the backstory and it got way too angsty, lmao. So maybe thatâll be easier now that the backstory is a fic of its own.
-The reason Reynaâs automatons are here is Jasonâs whole comment about how the word at the end of the prophecy has to be âdieâ because âone of us will dogâ makes no sense. Itâs immensely silly and Iâm pretty of proud of that one. I feel kind of bad that they just disappear halfway through the fic, but Jason didnât know they were there at all, so he doesnât notice. Please assume Leo finished fixing them up while Jason was conked out and theyâre doing well and are off doing Tyrantâs Tomb stuff with Reyna currently.
-Also yes, I did specifically put the punch line thing in because the fact that it happened at all makes me angry. People lining up to punch a kid we know suffered abuse in foster care is not very funny to me, actually. Iâve seen several angsty posts about how âJason didnât even get to punch Leo for disappearing 3â and I felt the need to point out that a) Jason wouldn't have punched him and b) heâd be horrified Leo would even suggest it at all.
-Iâve got one, potentially two more fics Iâd like to set in the same universe as this (one of them being the aforementioned silly Valgrace fic), but Iâve always got too many fic ideas at once, so weâll see if and when I get around to actually writing those.
Thank you so much for reading!! As always, feedback is immensely appreciated.
Summary: âSo, are you going to properly introduce us to your daughter anytime soon?â Leo teased, looking down at the newborn. âI mean, baby McLean is cute, but itâs a bit on the nose as far as names go.â
âYou called her Em, right?â Jason asked, apparently eager to get a good grade in uncle. âWhat's that short for?â
âTechnically, her name isnât officially anything yet,â Piper told them, wiggling into a more comfortable sitting position. âBut weâd like to name her Emilia, if Leo is okay with it.â
âHuh?â Leo looked from Piper to Reyna to the baby in utter confusion. âSheâs your child. Why would you need my permission to name her anything?â
Piper quirked her eyebrows at him like the answer should be obvious. The gears in his head ground to an abrupt halt. His vision started swimming with tears.
âYou want to name your kid after me?â
___
Or: Leo and Jason meet Piper and Reynaâs daughter.
Written for @lost-trio-week day 5: Parents
Word Count: 3.8k
Rating: General Audiences
Gentle CW for mentions of childbirth and anxieties surrounding that topic. I personally think this warning might even be overkill, but as per usual with stuff like this, my rule is better safe than sorry.
This fic is once again dedicated to my friend @queenjunothegreat, because Em was originally her baby (shared custody next gen verse my beloved <3) and she was the one who came up with her name. They also came up with the fic title because Iâm useless when it comes to titles lmaooo
Soft married Valgrace & Pipeyna. Also lost trio content, obviously, specific focus once again being Leo and Piperâs friendship (can you tell I care so so much about these idiots?)
âââ
Leo hated hospitals. A hospital was where heâd spent the first few days after his momâs death, being treated for smoke inhalation, and it was where his first set of awful foster parents had picked him up.Â
To say his memories of that time werenât the fondest would have been the understatement of the century.
And sure, he knew in theory that this was different. New Rome Hospital had a really low death rate for anything that wasnât battle-related injuries. As far as he knew, there hadnât been a childbirth-related death here in a century. Realistically, he knew Piper was fine.
Still, the time the rather frazzled-looking Asclepius legacy that had greeted them was taking to figure out where she was and whether it was alright for her to have visitors made Leoâs anxious brain spiral in all kinds of unfun directions.
âPiper might still want to get back at us for the time we both died on her,â he told Jason, anxiously wringing his hands.
His husband raised an eyebrow at him.
âI donât think sheâd die out of spite ten years after the fact,â he commented, squeezing Leoâs hand. âBesides, Reyna said she was doing okay, and you know how she gets about Piper.â
And yeah, alright, that was a fair enough point, but Leoâs anxiety wasnât exactly great at listening to reason. It never had been.
Nothing would calm him down until heâd seen with his own two eyes that Piper was doing okay.
âIf we ever have a kid, weâre adopting,â he sighed into his husbandâs shoulder.Â
Jason laughed, nuzzling him gently before leaning down to kiss him.
Jasonâs lips were a little scabbed from where he had anxiously chewed on them.
âYouâre such a hypocrite, you know that, right?â Leo teased, grinning up at his husband. âThank the gods I got rid of all the staplers, or you might have started chewing on those, too. We cannot have you set that kind of example for baby McLean.â
âWill you ever let that one go?â Jason groaned, rolling his eyes. âI was two.âÂ
âWhat kind of husband would I be if I did let it go, hm?â Leo asked, kissing him again.
Someone cleared their throat. A few years back, this might have made them jump apart like embarrassed children, but now, Leo pulled back slowly, eyes lingering on his husband a while longer.
Heâd dragged Jason back out of the Underworld by the collar of his stupid school uniform when theyâd been seventeen. He was allowed to be disgustingly in love in public. The people could deal.
The Asclepius legacy stood there again, staring down at his clipboard awkwardly. Leo was pretty sure the guy was younger than himâhe looked barely older than twenty.Â
âRoom 201. I wouldnât recommend staying longâmother and child are both exhausted and will need plenty of rest. And wash your hands before you-â
âOkay, yeah, weâre not complete idiots,â Leo interrupted him. Heâd washed his hands four times since getting to the hospital, just because it had given him something to do.Â
He was moving in an instant, dragging his husband along with him. Thankfully, his ankle had the decency not to be too much of an ass today.
âYouâre going in the wrong direction,â Jason commented, voice tinged with amusement as he pulled him back the way theyâd come.Â
âWhy do you know that?â Leo asked, raising an eyebrow. âJust how much time did you spend here as a kid?â
Jason ignored him and kept walking.
~~~~
Leo wanted to knock on that stupid blue door. Really, he did.
So he wasnât sure why it was that, instead of knocking, he stuffed his hands into the kangaroo pocket of his hoodie and just stared at the door like a total idiot.
His outfit wasnât fancy, but it was clean, which was more than could be said for the clothes heâd worn in the workshop earlier that day. He wasnât as bad as his husband, who Leo had had to talk out of wearing a suit to the hospital because he was worried about making a good first impression, but he was suddenly worried that maybe he still smelled of motor oil.Â
The kid would not remember, obviously, but he thought if the first thing he did was upset Piperâs baby, that would still suck. He wasnât sure what heâd do if they didnât like him.
Jason squeezed his shoulder. âMi vida, you're gonna make a great uncle, you know that, right?â
âDuh. Iâm incredible,â Leo announced, continuing to stare at the door.Â
As always, his husband saw right through himânot that Leo was making it especially hard to do so right now.
âTheyâre gonna love you. I mean it.â Jason nudged him. âYouâre great with the kids we help at the shelter.â
âI mean, I guess,â Leo mumbled, but his shoulders relaxed, just a fraction. âIf all else fails, I suppose I can always bribe them with candy once theyâre a little older.â
Jason laughed, and Leo finally managed to make himself knock.
It was Reyna who opened the door. She wasnât even the one whoâd had the baby, but she still looked as much of a fucking disaster as Leo had ever seen her. She had deep rings under her reddened eyes and was wearing what Leo was decently sure were rumpled pajamas. Her hair had come loose from its usual neat braid and exploded in messy waves around her shoulders.
âIt turns out my daughter is really fond of my hair,â Reyna explained dryly, but there was a softness in her eyes that was usually reserved for Piper. âCome in.â
She moved back to her wifeâs bedside in an instant.Â
Piper looked⌠honestly, Leo had seen her look way worse. Her safety scissors bob didnât look a lot more messy than usual, if he was being honest. Her skin was sweat-damp and she was obviously exhausted, but no one had stabbed her or tried to cook her into soup, which was definitely a plus.
Well, that and the way she was smiling down at the tiny bundle in her arms.
âHey Pipes,â Leo said, raising his hand in a ridiculous wave as he moved to stand at her side.
âHey.â Piper smiled up at them. âGlad you guys could make it. Iâd wave back, but Iâm holding a baby right now, so.â
The baby was small, but in the way Leo assumed newborns usually were. She had just the slightest hint of dark hair and equally dark eyes and was dressed in a small orange onesie.
She was looking right at him.
âSheâs got your nose.â Leo paused. âWell, a very tiny copy of your nose. Youâve kept your own nose, as far as I can tell.â
âYouâre lucky I love you as much as I do,â Piper sighed, poking her daughter in the nose in question. âYour tĂo is a bit of an idiot, but youâre going to love him, too. Trust me.â
The baby cooed happily.
âGreat.â Leo groaned dramatically. âIâm being bullied by a newborn.â
Piper laughed.
âHow are you feeling?â Jason asked, though Leo knew the baby had about 95% of his husbandâs attention right now.
Jason had been pulling faces at her literally since theyâd walked in the door.Â
Heâd always been that way around kids, but babies were especially bad. They activated a protective, wildly affectionate parental instinct that Leo had to assume came from Jasonâs wolf boy months because he definitely hadnât gotten it from either of his parents.
It was endearing as hell, but had the unfortunate side effect that it had always made Leo think about a kid of their own, including back when he hadnât felt even slightly ready for one.
âExhausted. Content. A little embarrassed.â Piper burst into another fit of tired laughter. âI sort of yelled at my wife to get out. Twice. Which would have been fine, except I was apparently using charmspeak.â
âThat you even told her to get out at all seems wildly unfair towards Reyna considering you guys didnât even have sex,â Leo commented, raising an eyebrow at Piper. âThis is, like, objectively not on her.â
Reyna snorted, which was always a massive win in Leoâs book. Heâd had a hard time figuring out what sort of jokes made her laugh, and every time he managed, he felt immensely proud of himself.
âNuh-uh,â Piper protested immediately. âEm may be a magic IVF baby, but sheâs a magic IVF baby we both decided to have, so itâs still at least fifty percent Reynaâs fault.â
âThatâs a responsibility I will gladly accept. Sheâs mine and sheâs yours and I would not change that for anything in the world.â Reyna pressed a soft kiss to her wifeâs forehead. Then she reached down towards her daughter. The baby happily grasped her fingers.Â
Reynaâs usual serious expression had melted away into a smile that was so sweet Leo thought itâd give him a toothache.Â
âYeah, okay, we get it, you guys are adorable,â he commented, because he was a total hypocrite when it came to other peopleâs PDA. âBut what I really want to know is how far out of the hospital you got before the charmspeak wore off.â
âThe first time I realized by the end of the hallway. The second time I made it all the way out to the parking lot. How Piper had that kind of energy, Iâll never understand.â Reyna shook her head, a kind of quiet awe in her voice. âThough perhaps worse than me leaving for a few minutes was the fact that the second time it happened, it also affected the midwife.â
Jason abruptly stopped pulling faces at Em to look up at Piper with a horrified expression.
âThat sounds terrifying. Are you okay?â
âIt was scary as hell at the time.â Piper shrugged. âLooking back on it, it's mostly just funny.â
âYou continue to be the strongest warrior I know,â Reyna told her fondly, leaning down to kiss her.
âLove, I was an absolute terror and you know it.â Piper beamed at her wife. âYou are cute, though, so maybe Iâll allow it.â
âSo, are you going to properly introduce us to your daughter anytime soon?â Leo teased, looking down at the newborn again. âI mean, baby McLean is cute, but itâs a bit on the nose as far as names go.â
âYou called her Em, right?â Jason asked, apparently eager to get a good grade in uncle. He looked like he might genuinely explode if he didnât get to hold the baby within the next three seconds, but also like heâd bravely bear that fate because he didnât want to be rude. âWhat's that short for?â
âTechnically, her name isnât officially anything yet,â Piper told them, wiggling into a more comfortable sitting position. âBut weâd like to name her Emilia, if Leo is okay with it.â
âHuh?â Leo looked from Piper to Reyna to the baby in utter confusion. âSheâs your child. Why would you need my permission to name her anything?â
Piper quirked her eyebrows at him like the answer should be obvious.
The gears in his head ground to an abrupt halt. His vision started swimming with tears.
âYou want to name your kid after me?âÂ
Leo hadnât gone by Emilio since before heâd met Piper. Heâd almost forgotten she knew his full name.Â
âOnly if youâre okay with it,â Piper told him, suddenly looking awkward. âI know why you donât use the name for yourself, but I figured just naming her Lea might be confusing. Sorry, I probably should have asked you sooner. If you donât want-â
âNo, no, if you guys really want that, Iâd be honored. But like- why?â he asked in utter disbelief. âWhy me, out of all people?â
âBecause youâre my best friend,â Piper said, smiling at him. âBecause youâre brave and smart and the best person I know. Because you defied fate and found happiness despite all odds. Because Iâll be lucky if she grows up to be even a little bit like you.â
Leo turned to Reyna. He could feel the tears running down his cheeks. âYouâre okay with that?â
Reyna nodded, her expression solemn. âIf names really do have power, yours is the greatest blessing we can give her.â
Leo was absolutely bawling his eyes out. His husband wrapped an arm around his shaking shoulders and soothingly ran a hand up and down the length of his arm.
âSheâs the luckiest kid in the universe,â Jason told him, pressing a kiss to the back of his head.Â
Leo had thought himself a curse for most of his childhood. Heâd gotten better about it in recent years, since heâd made peace with his motherâs death and led Jason back out of the Underworld, but the pain had never fully faded.
Piper and Reyna associating his name with joyâchoosing it for their daughter to make sure sheâd be happy âwas hitting him on a level he couldnât fully process.Â
It had been one thing to know on a theoretical level that Piper wanted him to be her childâs godfatherâminus the religious connotations.Â
But this? To know his best friend not only trusted him with the smallest, most precious human being Leo had ever met, but that she trusted his name to keep her safe? He genuinely didnât think he would ever recover from that.
âI love you guys,â he sniffled. âSo much.â
He knew that was a deeply uncool reaction. Maybe he should have been all smug and braggy about the whole thing. Maybe he would be, later, once everything had properly sunken in.
But right now, he couldnât stop crying.
âAnd we love you right back,â Piper said with a soft smile, leaning forward and holding her armful of curious baby out towards him. âYouâre not getting out of holding your niece, you know that, right?â
âYeah, I know.â He sniffled.Â
Leo had been terrified of holding Em basically since he knew she existed. Heâd never been able to bring himself to hold Percy and Annabethâs kid, despite all the times theyâd babysat back in college. It had been easy enough to pass the job off to Jason, who loved holding babies.
That way, Leo could avoid any potential disasters. No way he could drop a baby he never even held, right?
Heâd known that Piper wouldnât let him get away with that when it came to her child, and that knowledge had scared the hell out of him for months. What if he screwed up? What if he did it wrong and somehow hurt the baby?
But Piper was holding Em out towards him, an expression of utter trust on her face, and Leo couldnât do anything but reach out to take his tiny niece from her arms, trying to mirror the way Piper had held her.
Emilia stared up at him with wide, curious eyes. Her weight felt awkward in his arms.
âGods, Iâm totally messing this up, arenât I?â
âYouâre really not,â Piper reassured him. âJust make sure youâre supporting her head. Here, Iâll-â She tried to lean forward, but stopped, wincing.
âHermosa, youâre supposed to be resting,â Reyna told her, voice firm and concerned.Â
She was smiling at Leo, but she was also wringing her hands, watching him closely like maybe she was expecting him to drop her daughter.Â
That made two of them.
Leo could easily picture her vaulting over the bed to catch her child if that happened, though that weirdly didnât make him feel a lot better about the possibility.
âDonât mind my lovely wife. Reyâs just nervous,â Piper whispered, patting his arm. âYouâre the first person aside from us and the hospital staff who gets to hold Em.â
âIf youâre trying to make me less nervous, reminding me that Iâm messing up one of Emiliaâs first experiences with being held was not the way to go,â Leo joked, trying to shift the baby in his arms. This was not very effective, seeing as he had no idea what he was doing.
âI can help, if you want,â Jason volunteered immediately. He waited for Leo to nod, then put his hands over Leoâs and carefully adjusted his hold on Em a bit. âHere. Just support her head a little more. Youâre doing great, mi vida.â
Emiliaâs weight felt a little less awkward in his arms now. Leo relaxed a fraction, smiling down at her.
âThanks for the assist.âÂ
âAlways.â Jason nuzzled Leoâs cheek. âYou were barely even messing up. You just have a tendency to overthink things when youâre nervous.â
âSays the guy who almost came here in a suit,â Leo commented, but he didnât look up. His entire focus was on the newborn in his arms. He was mesmerized.
âHi, sobrinita.â He was still sniffling, but he hadn't made his niece cry yet, so he was counting that as a win. âGods, youâre a literal baby and somehow Iâm the one wailing at you. So much for decent first impressions, hm?â
Emilia cooed at him.Â
âYeah, thatâs what I thought,â he agreed, nodding his head at his niece. Holding her grew easier with each passing moment. She was looking at him like he was the only person in the universe.Â
Leo loved her immediately.
He couldnât believe heâd been as anxious as he had about holding her. He couldnât believe heâd almost made himself miss out on this.
 âPipes, I hope youâre not expecting me to say no to her, ever, because I can tell you right now that itâs not gonna happen.â
Piper laughed. âOh, please. Your job was never going to be responsible godfather. If that was what I was looking for, Iâd have picked someone else.â
âWeâre gonna get into so much trouble together,â he whispered to Em, grinning at her.Â
This time, Emilia didnât smile back at him. Instead she scrunched up her face and started crying.
Leo froze.
âOh gods, Iâm so sorry. I donât know what I did, I was just-â
âBabies cry. You didnât do anything wrong,â Piper told him gently. âI canât believe sheâs been as quiet as she has since you two came in, honestly. This is the calmest sheâs been since she was born.â
âOh.â Leo had almost managed to stop crying, but that made him start up again.Â
âShe cried when I first held her, too,â Reyna told him. When he looked up at her, he could tell some of the tension had gone out of her shoulders, despite the fact that heâd just managed to upset her daughter. âIâm glad sheâll grow up knowing her emotions arenât something to fear.â
Leo hadnât even considered thinking about it like that, but it made sense that Reyna would. When heâd first met her, there would have been no way for him to tell if sheâd criedâif sheâd allowed herself to cry at all.
He looked at her red-rimmed eyes again, the expression on her face genuine and fond, and could immediately feel more tears running down his cheeks. Heâd have walked over and hugged her this instant if it hadnât been for the newborn in his arms.
âYeah.â Leo sniffled. âMe too.â
He was pretty sure he hadnât cried this many happy tears since Jason had started reciting his wedding vows in slightly awkward Spanish.
âCan I-â Jason asked, gesturing vaguely towards Emilia. When Leo and Piper both nodded, he took the baby into his own arms, rocking her gently. His expression immediately melted into the worldâs softest smile.
Seeing them like this, Leo would have married him again in an instant.
âSheâs probably overstimulated. This is the most people sheâs ever met in her life,â Jason concluded once heâd managed to soothe her a little.Â
âI get it. People are really overwhelming.â Leo wiped at his eyes. âI still canât believe my stupid sewer rat face is, like, the fifth face this poor kid has ever seen. She did not need to be exposed to sewer rats this early in her life.â
âThereâs nothing wrong with your face,â Jason protested immediately. âI like your face.â
âYouâre married to me. Youâre supposed to say that,â Leo teased, but he still found himself smiling. âWe should probably leave you guys for the day, hm? You three all look like you could use a nap.â
âAs long as you promise youâll be back soon,â Piper insisted, smiling up at them as Jasonâvery reluctantlyâhanded Emilia back to her. âHi, sweetie. Youâre a little sleepy, hm?â
Emilia yawned in agreement.
âYouâre not getting rid of us that easily.â Leo grinned at his best friend.
âThanks for coming here as soon as you did. And, you know, for all the other sappy stuff Iâm not going to say right now because I think weâve all cried enough for one day.â
âYeah. Gotta save some of that for tomorrow,â Leo agreed, wiping at his eyes with his sleeve. Then he reached out, gently pressing his finger into his nieceâs palm. âBye bye, Emilia. Be nice to your moms, okay?âÂ
Her hand closed into a fist, holding his finger tightly.Â
Leo let out a startled laugh.
âSheâs got excellent reflexes,â Reyna said proudly.
âYeah, well, I guess that means weâre not leaving yet. Iâm really not sure how Iâll ever get out of this finger trap without the ability to turn into an iguana.â
Both Piper and Jason immediately cracked up. Reyna just looked confused. Leo made a mental note to tell her that particular story some other time.
âAnything we should bring you tomorrow?â Jason asked. He looked Reyna over. âDo you want some clothes that arenât, uh-â
ââŚpajamas?â Reyna laughed. âYes. That would be great. I checked the hospital bag about fourteen times to make sure weâd packed everything we might need, but it somehow did not occur to me that weâd be leaving in the middle of the night, nor that Iâd need to pack any clothes for myself.â
âI want a large coffee and the least healthy pastry you can find,â Piper said immediately. âReyna has everything else covered.â
Leo laughed. He reluctantly removed his finger from Emâs grasp, linking his hand with his husbandâs as they left.
And, well, if he spent the rest of the evening baking horrendously sugary pastries, that was nobodyâs business but his own.

Fic Notes:
-Fun fact! I edited this at 3 am last night and then I didnât even post it because I couldnât think of a title. It is now, once again, 3 am. My sleep schedule is doing great, thanks for asking.
-The concept of ânames have powerâ is so interesting to toy with specifically in a context like this. Because like, objectively, Leo has had a lot of bad stuff happen to him. Heâd never even considered thinking of his name as a blessing before this. But few demigod or legacies lead easy lives, and in the end the thing that outweighs anything else is that heâs managed to find happiness, despite the odds being stacked against him.
-Also, considering Reyna has a prophecy hanging over her head thatâs specifically linked to family legacy, it just makes sense for her and Piper to choose Leoâs name. What better way to protect your child from a prophecy than giving her the name of someone who defied his fate?
-Would really like to eventually go into Reynaâs feelings on all this more, but that deserves a whole fic of its own.
-For anyone whoâd like context on the Emilio thing, the very basic idea of that being Leoâs full name and him never using it is that his mom always used his full name and heâs terrified heâll forget what it sounded like if other people use it, because no one ever says it quite like she did.
-Hereâs a little fic Juno wrote about Piper finding out Leoâs full name for anyone who wants a little extra context!
-âBut canonically his name is Leonidas.â As far as Iâm aware, Rick actually confirmed his name is just Leo. Also, this is a fanfic, I can therefore do whatever I want :)
Thank you so much for reading! Comments, as always, extremely appreciated.

Leo being possesed and firing at Camp Jupiter is something that understandably leads Octavian to want war. But I'm more focused on how Leo seems devastated by the fact that he hurt Jason. Unlike previous notes i've made at school, I didn't transcribe any of it. But I got the general page count. Pages 50-63. In those pages, we repeatedly have it mentioned just how concerned Leo is that he hurt Jason. And I think that's really nice to see.

Jason Grace, consistently telling Leo he is awesome.
Name one other character that does that. I dare you.
#Calypso definitely doesnât do that#she actively tries to bring him down and insult him- often attacking his insecurities#and leo has such low self esteem he needs someone to lift him up#and this is only in tlh btw thereâs more in other books#jason x leo#leo x jason#valgrace#anti caleo#caleo crit#caleo#leo pjo#leovaldez#team leo#leo valdez#leo valdez angst#leo valdez pjo#pjo leo#jason grace pjo#jason hoo#jason pjo#jason grace#pjo jason grace#percy jackson#pjo fandom#percy jackson fandom#pjo#pjo hoo toa#percy jackson and the heroes of olympus#pjo hoo#the lost hero
