Do you know why so many fics are tagged as Star Trek and not TOS?

(As near as I can figure), it's because people have been writing star trek fics since long before Star Trek got its retronym as The Original Series (which is why some 60+ year old star trek fans still sometimes say just "Star Trek" and not TOS!) and also why they tag their fics as such.

I'm guessing newer/younger fans who do this are doing it out of a sense of continuity, but I've seen people say they tag fics as just "Star Trek" when the interpretation is loose enough that it could be in either universe (which some people say is impossible due to the characterisation, but it usually works well for one-shots, drabbles and vignettes).

The opposite problem actually happened with AOS: you can tell if a fan uses AO3, because they came up with the "Alternate Original Series" tag because that's how it was tagged on AO3, before Paramount finally settled on "The Kelvinverse" (I haven't fact checked this, but this is what I've heard from people who were active in the fandom at the time).

a. can read the notes and tags on bookmarks of their fic

b. are being really fucking nice letting anybody read their stuff for free when they could have kept it for themselves, it doesn't matter if it's great or just eh

c. didn't post their fic to get graded on it.

i don't care if it's a good grade, it's rude. if you don't want to make it a private bookmark at least use a code so nobody else can tell you're taking off mental points and comparing them to the rest of the class wtf.

Actually im not done posting about Ao3. This isn’t about it as an organization being above criticism and evolution or anything but it’s definitely super fucking weird and an ideological left turn for otherwise really progressive people to suddenly be like “actually the zero censorship nonprofit no-ads archive website for anyone with this hobby to post their transformative work is worthless and cringe and you’re stupid for thinking it’s important at all especially because it has a lot of porn, because porn is the stupidest and most worthless art of all” and I’ve been ??????? for days now about seeing takes on Ao3 and Ao3 users in general like this

Sometimes it hits me how truly hilarious scrolling through the Din Djarin/You tag on AO3 is because some fics contain the filthiest most unhinged smut, whereas others are pure fluff where he is incredibly soft. Like this man is either sobbing while recounting past trauma, being the best father to Grogu... or he's doing incredibly depraved things to you. (I've learnt things that I didn't even know were possible thanks to the wonderful writing talents of Din authors on AO3)

In conclusion: Find yourself a man like Din Djarin who can do both.

(This is not a post to compare or rank authors or pit one style of writing vs another. Din is as multifaceted as the people who write him so no two authors will ever characterise him the same and that's why fanfiction is incredible! Go crazy friends!)
