okay we need to have an intervention.

i've noticed that people don't leave the same kind of unhinged compliments under fanfics that visual artists usually receive (eg, "i want to eat your art"), so i've come up with a list that you need to start employing when your friends send you their WIPs and when your favorites update on ao3 but you're having a hard time commenting something that sounds intelligent and you still want to support them

"you're like if [famos author] (eg, Victor Hugo if the fic is angst) was into [fandom]"

"well THIS has been added to my pre-sleep daydream schedule"

"this fic invaded my mind and consumed my brain like a spore"

"I'M LOSING SLEEP OVER THIS ONE, FOLKS"

and a couple that are just nice (without the feral nature):

artists: draw fanart of the fic!! it doesn't matter if you think your art skills are good and it doesnt matter if it's just a sketch!! let the author see it!!

So. After the ddos attack on ao3.

I was encouraged to write more comments and make my love known to fanfic writers.

I dont really like commenting. Because im a bit shy and soooo lazy.

Now though. I am writing more comments. And dude. This is so heartwarming. Ya'll need to treat writers better. They are doing the lord's work.

Take for an example, couple of days prior, i was searching for something interesting to read, and found an oneshot quite compelling.

I read it. At the end of it, i was blown away by how good it was. It promised me something and it went beyond my expectations. But then i saw a crime, zero fucking comments!

At that moment, i wasn't feeling up to writing a comment. Because, normally i like to write huge paragraphs. But because im lazy i decided to be brief.

Next day, the author answered that the comment lift their mood for the whole day.

That warmed my heart.

Duuuuuuuude! Write comments! Suport the writers of the fics you like! No need to be something super elaborate. Just give your thoughts. Freak out. Ramble. Ask something. Make theories. Compliment. Make a joke about how you wished to give kudos every chapter but ao3 sucks(not true bby) and won't let you.

Truly. Just. Comment. It can make someone's day. And that is part of the apeal of writing fics. Interacting with people.

Just give love to fanfic writers yall. They deserve this and so much more.

look this site really is awful for ppl with OCD so i just wanna reassure anyone that you are not Tainted Forever for consuming a piece of media with questionable content. the fact that youre able to recognize it speaks to your critical thinking skills, which is good, certain depictions should be critiqued. but you dont need to ruminate on it to the point where you begin to feel guilty for simply witnessing gross or creepy writing choices. you dont have to vindicate yourself to the fictional tumblr discourser inside your head, saying that youre now a bad person bc you watched the wrong anime. your actual response to it still matters of course, but thats that and this is this. just seeing it is neutral, you didnt commit a thought crime. its literally fine.

A number of fanfiction authors are pulling their fics from Ao3 because people are illegally selling bound copies of these fics on etsy.

Pretty sure this hasn't happened to any of my stories. And I have given permission to folks to bind copies for personal use, which is perfectly legal and just and this post does not apply to those situations.

But this needs to be said:

If you are the kind of person who would download something from Ao3....bind it....and sell it on Etsy...you're dead to me.

The fact that people have the balls to take creative works that aren't theirs, that are provided for free to the world because of the joy it brings authors to share their stories with people who love the characters as much as we do, and turn around and sell them for HUNDREDS of dollars is gross and morally corrupt.

And the people who buy these copies, knowing they are putting the entire world of fanfic at risk, are just as bad.

It is ILLEGAL to sell fanfiction. It is immoral to buy it.

Fanfic exists in a liminal space where writers are protected because no money exchanges hands. The greed of a few is going to fuck it up for the rest of us. If you see bound fics for sale, please report the sellers.

read this one just today. VAMPIRES !!!!!!!!!!!! vampire max. do i even have to elaborate but are u already immediately moved.

this is a dear oomf’s and one of my fav ever lestappen fics <3 includes not only max reaming tf out of charles but max reaming tf out of charles with a machine that has a mold of his dick!! because everyone in this house knows that whether real mock or fake mock it must be mock in the end. sharl would have it no other way

the premise in this fic immediately hooked me and the rest was just as good!! basically charles sends max a dick pic accidentally and it opens up a wholeeee can of worms and forces them to ask questions about themselves and their relationship with eachother… and ofc having them fuck absolute nasty

by the same author this is such a cute feelgood fic in the beginning then turns into the most adorable porny read I LOVEEE THIS ONE charles and max are such a qt pies together in this. plus the tag charles is a big ol' flirt and an even bigger bottom really just speaks to me to immeasurable beliefs.

and lastly here i think is one of the best examples of max absolutely reaming the fuck out charles in the ever lovely venom fic. yes this is max as the venom symbiote and charles as his carrier and its some of the most amazing filthy peak ive ever read in my life… like just look at the tags, prostate milking, sounding, overstimulation, multiple orgasms, forced orgasm. Essentially charles’ shit gets absolutely DESTROYED and i will forever thank emmie dash for writing this masterpiece. frankly we need more monsterfucking lestappen!!

im gonna start posting fanfic recs btw whenever i find good ones. both here and my (awfully barren) 18+ account. because there are so many good fics out there with so few hits and fewer kudos and sometimes no comments period and it SUCKS because i REALLY LIKE THEM A LOT.. and i hope that by linking them here and yelling at everyone to COMMENT DAMMIT they might actually do it

seriously though any comment means a lot. most people who read a fic don’t even give a kudos. even if the fic wasn’t top tier, if you didn’t dislike it, hand over some kudos!! and if you liked it, comment!!!! even if the comment is one singular heart emoji it will be appreciated. if the comment just says “great fic!” the author will be happy. your comment doesn’t have to be this long winded gushing or analysis.

so many authors quit writing or lose motivation because the comments are few and far in between or just sometimes nonexistent. trust me when i say authors don’t care about how long or cool or smart sounding your comment is i promise!!!

i hope that mmmaybe recommending fics and telling people to comment might help fics i really like get more support maybe. and i, points at you reading this, hope that you will listen!!!at least a little….at least sum kudos….

I don’t think people realize how freaked out fanfic readers get when their favorite author(s) doesn’t update their ongoing schedule ON TIME.

And it’s not cause we want the chapter…it’s cause we’re so fucking worried about the Author.

Like— OMG ARE YOU OKAY? YOU’VE BEEN GIVING US THE TRAGIC UPDATES OF YOUR LIFE IN THE NOTES THE PAST 10 CHAPTERS?! WHY STOP? ARE YOU DEAD? DID YOU GET STUCK IN THE WALL LIKE YOUR CAT?? HAVE YOU EATEN?? HAS YOUR BRAIN EXPLODED??

Readers no longer care about the story when they don’t get their usual update. We panic and flag S.O.S as we track down our wayward author who has been both blessed by the universe with a creative mind and cursed all the same with the worst luck.

So any authors who are reading this please understand— when we comment “hey are you okay?” in your comments. No, we are not asking about the chapter.

We are legitimately concerned for your wellbeing. Do not force yourself to shit out a chapter just to appease other ppl when you yourself are not in the mental state to enjoy it or even write it to begin with.

The fic has now been completely finished.

Chapters 1-10 have been almost completely rewritten, 11-20 heavily edited and 21-30 tweaked and refined.

All chapters were updated all at once as of now, and we hope everyone who has read it in the past will give it a re-read to enjoy the fic in its final form. To be clear, the events of the story are unchanged. It has simply been upgraded so it reads better.

Of course, feedback on the changes are welcome!

This last chapter is merely an afterward, that contains authors comments and thanks. Apologies for those who may have hoped for an epilogue, but the story finished exactly where it needed to and we didn't want to ruin that.

Thanks to the SOME people using ao3 accounts for their ai to "learn" from without the author's permission, a few of my favorite authors have locked their stories. WHICH IS THEIR RIGHTS and I would of done the same in their shoes.

But my complaint about the website is the whole invite thing. Unless you know someone, you get stuck on a waiting list before you are allowed to make an account on their. So in my case, I might get the invite by:

Hi everyone! This week has been kind of crazy, but I haven’t forgotten. June’s a fantastic month for many different reasons: Pride, end of the fiscal year, for some it’s the end of the school year. But, there are many things to be thankful for.

A Reminder to Appreciate Fanfic Authors

Writing and posting fanfiction is a two-way street.

Fanfic authors pour their souls into creating stories that are just as much for you as they are for themselves. Yes, it's a creative outlet for the author, but it also thrives on connection with the readers. Every comment, every bit of feedback and love, fuels the author's passion to keep those stories alive.

While likes and shares are appreciated, comments--no matter how short--mean the absolute world to authors, especially those who are smaller or not as well-known. Comments show the authors that their work is being felt and is resonating with other people.

I've seen two of my close author-friends stop writing their stories (20 chapters in!) because they didn't get much engagement. And honestly? I've been feeling the same way...

I finished Demi Demon because I knew people were connecting with it--I was getting at least two comments per post, an Ask every few chapters, a reblog with a comment under it, or I was getting personal messages about how much someone enjoyed it. And for Archivist's Oath, I've been lucky to have 3 consistent commenters (soggy, gabriel, ghoulette) who have shared their love on this brand new story. However, it's still hard to keep the momentum going without more interaction.

So please, if you're someone who usually floats through fanfics (like I did until I became a fanfic author), only leaving likes, shares, but no comments...I ask you to take a minute to write something, anything, on one of your favorite stories. It doesn't have to be long, in-depth, or spilling your heart on the floor--it can just be something as simple as "This was a great chapter!"

Your authors will treasure it. It's a small act for you but it can have a huge impact on the author. Trust me, we remember those comments. Support your authors! <3
