Anyways thinking abt Martyn and Grian as foils because Martyn spends his time chasing the past while Grian is actively killing his past.
Yes I know there’s the whole Ren and Scar dynamics with them but I wanna talk about the Southlands. This alliance I think highlights this difference between them because they’re so close together
Grian started the group and ended up being the first kicked out. Martyn joined and was the last remaining. By the end of the series Grian all but cut ties with the Southlands, killing Jimmy and Mumbo on the keep’s doorstep and involving Impulse in a plan that would surely end him. Martyn kept them close for as long as possible (bar tim) and after losing them literally hallucinated that they were still with him. Even after dying his first concern is his team. “Did we win” instead of “did I win.”

I won't here because I refuse to spoil people on ISAT.#What I *will* say is that both these characters had a similar curve in my interest in them.#Which is “I was ambivalent until the near end - where they then shot up to become some of my favourite characters ever.”#We love characters with an incredible arc that reframes them so intensely that you the reader will never be the same after.#Anyways!
