Me: posts something from Midnight Mass

Mutuals: Ok, HEAR ME OUT

#BUT I LOVE IT #i love feeling like i have impact on the world even on such a small fairly insignificant scale #and i love you guys #anyway my opinion is:#flanagan is still better in his og stuff than doing adaptations #he has a fairly good grasp of building relationships between characters BUT he seems to struggle with the stories themselves.#he builds and builds this grand idea but then his endings go out with a fizzle not a boom #don't get me wrong the series was entertaining but the actors were a huge part of it they really worked their asses off #if not the charm of hamish linklater and the charisma of everyone else it would fall a bit flat #and of course you gotta let your actors do their thing but the story shouldn't rely on them to be good #i feel like flanagan loves references and patterns too much to the point where he becomes drunk on the concepts and the plot suffers.#which i can understand bc i also love patterns BUT #when you're creating a tv series you can't lose the forest for the trees #(i didn't mind the monologues tho! that's not where the problem lies surprisingly.#it's more the way they're written and how the story is - it's supposed to be deep and it is but it loses the depth when it's overexplained.#sometimes you wish something was withheld from you as the viewer.#like the moment of silence when riley goes out at night and sees the world differently. i really like that moment of stillness #where everything he could have said was felt rather than explained.#so there's that)#i also wish he was more daring #because in the end everything was very simple and explainable. all the reasons all the relationship dynamics.#i personally would push for more ambiguity. more moments of uncertainty and madness #it was all very constrainted. despite there being a literal winged vampiric creature hanging around.#which btw was underutilized. OR could have been eliminated altogether. that would have been interesting.

You know what’s astonishing about Katara? She grew up in a world without bending.

It’s not surprising that Sokka calls her bending ‘magic water’ in the first episode. It might as well have been magic to them at that point; they had never seen it in practice until they meet Aang.

So not only did Katara not have any teachers, she didn’t have any kind of guidance, no visual aids, no idea of how bending is supposed to look or work. The first time she ever sees actual waterbending movements is when she steals the waterbending scroll from the pirates. The first time she meets another waterbender is when she reaches the North Pole, where within weeks she outmasters pretty much everyone and goes on to teach the Avatar.

Everything she does is so incredibly impressive, and yet I can’t help but feel the most proud of her when she catches a fish on that little boat.

Is she Lucy Westenra, or is she just a vessel for the writer's barely disguised fantasy of a women being punished for her promiscuity? Is she really"Bram Stoker's" Lucy Westenra: a naive, innocent 19 year old, with a cheery personality and a bright future ahead of her? Or has the writer instead just slapped her name on an OC that behaves nothing like her, and- with none of the grace or decorum that Lucy's tragically short story deserves- sexualized her slow and agonising death as much as possible, whilst very unsubtly doing their best to blame her for being murdered, so that we won't object to her being killed again later in an even more gruesome and sexual manner?

#every dracula adaptation gets every character wrong- but the way Lucy is treated in particular makes my blood boil #she's not stupid for being naive. she's not stupid for fixating on marriage. she's 19. A TEENAGER. she's allowed to be young #of course she doesn't have much life experience! that's why it's so tragic! when she dies we mourn the person she was meant to become #and regardless of however adaptations try to spin it; she did not want to be killed. she wasn't aware of dracula like the other characters #she didn't deliberately let dracula kill her. she didn't ask to be a vampire. she wasn't in love with dracula or anything like that #she died not understanding what was happening to her. she never lost her naivety. and that makes it even more tragic in my opinion #anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk #i think my old dracula hyperfixation is reigniting and i don't have the strength to stop it lmao #lucy westenra #dracula #bram stokers dracula #dracula daily #lit student screams into the void

i actually think it’s so significant that disco elysium is named after an optional side quest. because the heart of the game is in the margins. same way you don’t get the real ending if you don’t do the (let’s face it, sometimes annoying and disincentivised) cryptozoologist quest line. you have to care about the world and its people, not just grinding through the mystery, to ever really understand anything. which is exactly what the game of suzerainty tells you IF you don’t try to “win”

best part about comic tumblr is that it is the only fandom i’ve been a part of where no one says “i just love the fandom so much we’ve created such a safe space here 🥺” like i have never seen even one post about how much someone loves the dc fandom. this is not a happy family this is a cold war and im just glad we all know that

#i don’t think we’re worse than any other fandom but i think we’re the only ones that acknowledge it #as soon as i peek outside my circle of mutuals and mutual in laws i get subjected to the worst opinions i’ve ever seen #and every other fandom is the same way but some people just love the idea of the community #but that ‘community’ is literally just mutuals #and there’s nothing wrong with that! but i’m tired of seeing ppl act like Their fandom is this beautiful safe space with no issues #there is no community or safe space on dcblr 🫶 half of my mutuals have the other half blocked #anyways this is such a non issue that doesn’t matter literally at all but i’ve just been thinking about it

man i feel bad for fans of the httyd movies who haven't seen the shows, especially race to the edge. like they don't know that the riders left berk and lived on an outpost together to go adventuring and fight dragon hunters as a team. they don't know that snotlout and astrid and fishlegs and the twins got character development. they don't know how cool and interesting the villains in the shows are compared to the movies. they don't know that the riders are filled with love and loyalty to each other and they bicker and train and play card games with each other and have sleepovers together and will risk their lives for their friends and their dragons in a heartbeat. imagine that.

#personal opinion but race to the edge is really the poster child of how tv shows based on movies should be done #new awesome looking dragons new compelling side characters new interesting villains #and i loved the redemption arcs we got #and i dont think i have to say how good the shows did snotlout #and they fit into canon!#mostly #anyway i love them. the riders are my favourite found family in any media ever #httyd #rtte #how to train your dragon #race to the edge #rob #dob
