What do you think of Watari? Do you think he read too many comics of Batman as a child and that's why he is willing to go that far for L? Is he just that eccentric that he dedicated his life to create the perfect detective and then created a fabric orphanage that raises more perfect detectives? Or is he another bored genius with too much money? And what do you think L thinks of him?
“I just never thought I’d meet anyone who legitimately thought he was Batman.” Naomi pointed out, “I mean, that stuff just doesn’t happen to other people, but somehow I just managed to find the one guy and…” “I don’t think I’m Batman.” L said in slight confusion as if wondering how that point even had come up. “Oh come on, now you’re just delusional.” Naomi said, “Do I really need to point this out for you?” “There’s a ninety nine percent chance that there is nothing legitimate to your argument.” “Hey, assholes, I’m right here!” Mello said trying to become the focus of the conversation once again. Naomi and L spared him a dull glance before returning to glaring at each other and continuing to pretend that Mello didn’t actually exist. “Wrong. There are many reasons why you think you’re Batman. Let’s start with Watari, tell me, doesn’t he seem an awful lot like Alfred?” Naomi placed her hands on her hips ignoring Mello’s pacing back in forth in the room like a neglected and angry puppy. “That’s rather irrelevant and somewhat racist, not all British elderly men are Alfred…” Naomi continued counting off the reasons on her fingers, “You work with the police but you never show them your face. You learned martial arts and I’m sure that if you didn’t already know that it wasn’t practical you would beat your enemies up in an elaborate costume for the good of the world. You have at least three secret identities just in case someone finds out who you really are. You built a giant building with a helicopter pad just so that you could catch one man who is you’re arch nemesis. You have your own symbol which you display to show your presence in the world. How do you not think you’re Batman?” L blinked and said, “Those were all completely necessary.”
All You Need is Love, by me, circa 2010
I'm sure other people have said as much, but I feel like you're quoting me to me, anon...
I've already given my two cents on Wammy's, the long and short of it being that it's a toxic and terrible idea that is not for the good of the children, the world, or anybody.
So... honestly, yeah, Watari's clearly really attached to this idea of the world's greatest anonymous detective to the point where he built this orphanage that destroys several children's lives while actively destroying L's life (as we have enough flashbacks to reveal that L started this when he was very young). Watari clearly does care for L, we do see signs of that, but it doesn't mean this isn't all very fucked up and that Watari--clearly is chasing a goal in this and feels this is a good turn of events.
The thing is it's not about training people to become competent detectives, even if they were adults rather than children, it's instead making these children compete so they can get a single title for a man who isn't even dead yet to ensure that this legacy of an anonymous super detective continues when... why? L can die, anyone can die, any name can die. Why not let the title of L die and let other detectives step up to fill in the gaps? Why not have the children pursue their own titles rather than L's? Why have them pursue L's title at all from a very young age when this probably won't be what they want to do with their lives when they're adults?
Why this obsession?
It's not a natural thing that Watari's set up, not in any way, and the amount of dedication involved (including personally as he's the living assistant twenty-four-seven to L) speaks to something a lot more than a bored genius.
I think Watari believes in L, the idea of L, more than L himself ever did.
As for L's thoughts on Watari (here his thoughts on Near and Mello), it's hard to say. He treats Watari like shit, but he treats everyone like shit, and we do see him have... a few moments with Watari and no more friction with the man than he does anyone else.
However, we do see things such as L more or less refusing to go along with the Wammy's scheme, despite Watari being very into it. L and Watari always interact in the roles of detective and assistant, we never see them break character despite knowing each other since L was a child. In fact, we see Watari... plying him with sweets twenty-four-seven which really begs the question of whether Watari has ever, in L's life, helped him adult in any capacity. Did you even fucking try, Watari? Or did you just feed this boy hostess snacks for twenty years?
We also see L have a much more... nuanced and passionate interaction with Light than he ever does Watari. It could be Watari's comfortable, the closest thing L has to a father, while Light is exciting and a brilliant murderer and the highlight of his career, and we do see L be even worse with the likes of Matsuda, the rest of the task force, Misa, even people he hires like Wedy, but it really does feel like L means it when he says Light is his only friend.
He clearly has an emotional attachment to Watari but... honestly, it doesn't feel like as much as he has to Light, which is a bad sign when Watari's been around since L was a child.
Basically, I land on "looks complicated, but Watari was a pretty shit father, and L doesn't seem to regard him as one". I don't think L resents him, he clearly enjoys his position and toys too much, but I do think L... thinks of him and treats him as "assistant and butler" and that's the box Watari gets to live in in L's brain.

As much as I love Death Note,Wammy's was my least favorite part. I don't care much about the sordid implications - it's a shounen manga after all,it's not supposed to be realistic. Kids and teens want to see people their ages kicking ass and being smarter/more powerful than adults. Of course, going into the realism ignored by canon is the bread and butter of fandom, but it's not a canon flaw to overlook said fridge horror.
However, what bugs me about Wammy's is how unnecessary it's. L could've been just some young, rich genius dude who solves mysteries for fun with Watari as his handman/butler. Mello might just be a competitive gangster who wants to take down Kira, get a Death Note, and be n° 1. Near could've been simply a dude who truly believes Kira is dangerous/against his morals, besides being intelligent and well-connected enough to get government resources in said fight against Kira. As for Near and Mello's relationship? There is no need for genius orphanage either! Maybe they cooperated in the past for some common goal(Mello wanted a favor from someone with government connections - it might explain the missile, and Near needed a lead on Kira/have the cooperation of someone who managed to hide from Kira).
TL;DR:Not only Wammy's was a dumb idea, but every related character would be more interesting without it.
…gonna get hate for this but I gotta put it out there
I have said before that in my non-professional opinion, that there are no true psychopaths in Death Note, least of all L or Light. I mostly hold true to that idea.
However.
However.
When it comes to the individual who looked at a damaged and likely autistic orphan and decided:
“You are capable of handing extremely disturbing and graphic murder cases, because you were able to solve a large fraud case that police could not.”
“You do not need to develop any sort of emotional intelligence as long as you can function in the role I assigned you. In fact, it would probably be a hindrance.”
“Whenever you decide, I will commit illegal and even deeply harmful on someone in order to achieve a confession that supports your claims. The consequences this has for the prisoner are irrelevant.”
“The orphanages I run will now be pools for material to create your duplicate.”
Again, I’m no psychiatrist. I can’t make any diagnosis. But when it comes to Quillsh Wammy, he’s skating the line hard enough that I would call someone who can.
Ohhhh lord some people gonna kill me for not calling him Grampa Santa

⁎˚ ఎ Agere L headcanons ໒ ˚⁎
hai hai. could you perhaps do regressor L Lawliet headcanons, and maybe include some about him having a really hard time taking care of himself?
•L regresses to cope with the intense stress and pressure of his work. His triggers include overstimulation from complex cases, lack of sleep, and emotional overload
•He has a collection of plush toys and a particular blanket that he holds onto tightly when regressed. His favorite plush is a small panda, which he named Panda-chan
•Even in his regressed state, L's love for sweets persists. He gravitates towards candies, cakes, and fruit-flavored snacks. Watari ensures he has healthier alternatives too, like fruit slices and yogurt, but L always tries to reach for the sweets first
•L struggles with basic self-care both in and out of regression. As a regressor, he often forgets to wash his face, or change his clothes. Watari has to step in to help him with these tasks, gently guiding him through
•When regressed, L prefers wearing oversized, comfortable clothes. He often wears pajamas with cartoon characters or cute animal designs, which make him feel secure and cozy
•L enjoys simple, childlike activities such as coloring, watching cartoons, and building with blocks. These activities help him relax and disconnect from his usual intense analytical thinking
•In his regressed state, L's speech becomes simpler, and he might struggle to articulate complex thoughts. He uses a lot of gestures and expressive facial cues to communicate his needs and feelings
•L finds it incredibly hard to establish a consistent sleep routine, often staying up late even when regressed
•Watari implements a calming bedtime routine involving a warm bath, reading a bedtime story, and playing soft lullabies to help L settle down
•In his regressed state, L becomes much more attached to Watari, seeking his presence and comfort constantly
•He clings to Watari when feeling anxious or scared, needing the reassurance of his caretaker's steady presence
•Transitioning back to his adult mindset can be challenging for L. He sometimes resists leaving his regressed state, as it feels like a protective cocoon from his demanding responsibilities

very un-fire emblem, but since ao3 is down here's some L death note headcanons I was debating posting, hopefully they will benefit the masses in this time of hardship
L and how he thinks about romance:
(tw for slight sexual references and short icky behavior from an unnamed non-canon character but no non con, could be dub con)
- he had a couple puppy loves when he was a kid that he fell way too deep into and had break his heart. he just had trouble understanding the natural flow of relationships, and his standing with others who expected him to keep up with them, so he kept getting left behind
- he's obviously bisexual
- and i think he had a brief thing with another boy when he was an early teen and living at the orphanage
- probably the kind of thing where he felt like he had found his soul mate, and they spent lots of time together trying to make up for how starved for love their lives had been at Whammy's, and then eventually the other boy started to become disgusted with the system, and with L because he was so integral to it the older he got, and neither of them understood any of that, and the other boy broke up with him very unkindly and vanished all in the span of about a week
- L is a little wiser to what was going on behind the scenes now, but even if he had the full explanation, the pain was just so acute, and echoed his recurring experience with abandonment so that thinking about it just solidifies a belief that he's unlovable
- i think when he got into his later teens at the orphanage and started to have a bit of freedom to wander around unsupervised, he also had a brief relationship with an American girl who was on vacation in the area
- and by brief i mean the literal one week that she was in Britain
- she was a bit older than him, almost enough to be icky and certainly old enough to know better than to play with an obviously vulnerable young boy
- she was bored and on vacation so she decided to use him, and again he was totally smitten, poor thing was still just so desperate for companionship that he didn't question a good thing
- he is a genius, but his emotional intelligence just developed slowly cause of trauma:/
- she manipulated him into being physical with her the day before she went home in an alley near the orphanage. they didn't have penetrative sex but they got pretty well acquainted
- she left him immediately after and didn't come back to say goodbye.
- that experience was where his trust allowance ran out, and a few years later after he and Watari began moving around the world, the time and the physical separation from where he grew up helped him understand not to blame himself
- it's actually really lucky that he became a career law enforcer, because it gave him the needed exposure to how much other people straight up suck, and saved him from a lifetime of self-hatred
- his theme is really being self sustainable
- he doesn't have any qualms about his personal worth
- but he also doesn't think he's good enough for other people, so he's learned to live totally without them
- Watari is the exception, because L knows that their relationship is based on Watari needing him for his talent, and he can know quantifiably that he's good enough for that
- i think romance is something he craves even if the lack of it doesn't torture him, but he is truly and literally waiting for the stars to align in the person he chooses; it's something he will never take a risk on again (cough why I'm anti-Lawlight although no disrespect to the ship or it's shippers at all it's just not for me!)
- attraction is easy! he just doesn't trust it a bit.
- his end-game would have to be someone who's known him and Watari for quite a while, who Watari likes, and who has stayed around long enough that their only possible motivation for wanting him can be- well, wanting him
- but once he's found the right one, and he's safe with them, I think he'd be eager to participate in surprisingly traditional romantic gestures, and a good communicator.
- he's awkward as we know, but when comfortable with the person he loves, i think that awkwardness turns into endearing, just non-current mannerisms. like, he's a big kiss his partner's hand kinda guy, which isn't that weird or outdated really but he does it with the intent and reverence with which a knight kisses the hand of a court lady, and he does it because he's gathered his most complete pictures of romance from books and from old movies that i'm sure Watari has made him watch
- 10/10, perfect baby angel of a man, the geneva war crimes are a part of him and I'VE decided they're funny

Ngl I keep hearing Blackbriar songs whenever I think about Idol!Light because he's got Misa's goth aesthetic going on but I can't picture him being completely J-Pop. Does Light sing in a particular genre in the swap au, or is he more focused on the modelling/acting aspect? IS there an acting aspect? And how do Misa and L feel about Light's media creations? 👀👀 Does Matsuda fanboy over Light like he doesMisa in canon?
(Sorry I have so many questions I am far too invested in this AU lol)
NOOOO I LOVE QUESTIONS PLEASE ASK AWAY‼️‼️
HE DOES SING I CORRECTED HIS PROFESSION TO POP IDOL IN THE RELATIONSHIP MAP,, I always imagined light singing songs like Deco*27’s “The Vampire”! if u listen it has a very cutesy upbeat tune but the lyrics.
are certainly something! upbeat and cutesy but undeniably dirty i think is what he’d go with. I don’t know if there’s an acting aspect! maybe because hes a celebrity of a certain niche, but he’s probably primarily a performer.
as for opinions! Soichiro probably takes it the hardest because he’s a very firm traditional man and he seems to have a hard time grasping things he deems out of the usual even if he accepts it. he would never make light stop, but he is undeniably a little disappointed in him.
Misa actually doesn’t think too much about it, she’s a lot more empathetic than L was as the top detective. She grew up in japan for a while because her parents were killed while they were all on a vacation to england and when they died watari pulled some strings and brought her to wammy’s, so she’s aware how strict japanese culture is and she’s a little blind to light’s maliciousness because she sees herself in him. he’s rebellious because no one seems to understand him and despite being a celebrity his peers think he’s a freak because of his demeanor and personality. overall she feels bad for him, but light is light and thinks her pity is unbearably annoying.
L likely likes him distantly for his open rebellion against people who don’t like the unusual (given the fact he grew up in a japanese orphanage so his oddness often separated him from his peers and made him a target for harassment), but he probably doesn’t pay too much attention to him until light starts dropping hints only another death note user could pick up through his songs or announcements. light would want to find kira, but he would never make as bold a move as misa did, he’s more strategic than that.
I dont know if matsuda is a fan, it’s possible given he’s shown he’s capable of thinking outside the norm, but light is likely very anti-government from the start even if he isn’t openly pro-kira so it could go either way.

Reading the books: "My Youth Romantic Comedy is wrong, as I expected."
What takes 15 days? Correct! Reading the 14 main line novels of "My Youth Romantic Comedy is wrong, as I expected." and the Volume 14.5 short story collection. What a ride...
What I definitely can say: The anime series was extremely faithful to the books. When you stick to the mainline and omit the short stories, you would mostly miss out on one thing. The best thing!
Hachiman Hikigaya's endless inner monologue!!
Good lord, this boy has issues. He's overly in his own head, makes lots of assumptions, is too smart for his own good, and too clueless. I just love it.
Gazing into the abyss with rotten eyes
Writing a series completely or almost completely from the point of view of its protagonist, basically mostly from his stream of consciousness, has of course its own set of challenges. Luckily it's not plain stream of consciousness but also scene setting and descriptions of the other people's actions, and a lot of the fun of the series derives from contrasting Hikki's assumptions and interpretations with your own.
It's also frustrating... (Also, spoilers, I guess.)
And late in the series I was asking myself, if the boy had any connection to his feelings at all. Author Wataru Watari has a habit of hiding the obvious, and so our main characters beat around the bush to the very last. I did get a tad annoying. But I'm getting ahead of myself...
What actually works quite well is the evolutionary change we see in Hachiman over the series. The way he thinks about people changes subtly and continuously. In the beginning he even calls the ever-lovely Yui Yuigahama a "ho" and a "slut" to her face. Hardly charming!! This is one of the moments one has to endure, proof of Hachiman's resentment towards the world after having been ostracized for so long, his hate for "normies." And on the surface, Yui is the uber-normie, the adaptable, the one willing to change for the sake of popularity - something Hachiman cannot abide with. Initially.
It paves the ground, however, for enjoying all the deeper the kindness Hikki displays in his thoughts later on towards Yui, or how highly he thinks of her in the end. (Though not of her lack of book smarts which he confuses for intelligence.)
While we're at it, Hikkitani's eyes gaze upon a few other things. I was remarking in my original post about the anime series how refreshingly low on male gaze it was. Well, our protagonist is male, and he occasionally compares bust sizes... not in the most charming way, either. However, it's neither permanently so nor done unconvincingly. We did enter the mind of a male teen, after all. In reality, we would have been bound to find much worse things there, after all... Of which we get one hint, really. (I will not tell.)
An almost unbroken stream...
What we also get is a lot of Hachiman's thoughts about his boy crush Saika Totsuka. Which is endlessly hilarious in all its bi-confusion. The scenarios unfolding in his mind without filter - I can't tire of them.
However, for the first 11 volumes we are home alone inside the head of our anti-hero. The last three, however, mix things up a bit. Labeled as "Interludes" there are scenes that take place without Hachiman, written from the view of another character. With Volume 14 we also get a multi-installment "Prelude" that features the scene between Yui and Yukino we didn't get a detailed glimpse of at the end of Volume 13.
What's annoying here is the tendency of omitting part of the dialogue and only describing it vaguely. We can infer that Yukino admits her love for Hachiman to Yui - whispered in her ear. Because that's what Yui knew all along but didn't want to hear. And we get Yui admitting the same to Yukino - that she's in love with Hachiman - but again it's not spelled out. We all know. But for some silly reason it's not spelled out.
Another central interlude is earlier when Yui discovers Yukinon's hidden treasure. Behind the stuffed Grue bear Hachiman got her, her hidden image of holding on to him on Splash Mountain. (Which hasn't been quite accurately transcribed into pictures.)
These scenes are necessary to understand everybody's actions for the complex ending. To understand why Yukinoshita seems to reject Hachiman and send him towards Yuigahama. To understand why Yui will in the end ask if it really feels alright and prompts her Hikki's final bid... towards the other girl. And why they all can remain together after. It also reveals Yui's mature side, her high degree of emotional intelligence, and her deep understanding fo and love for others.
We also get a bit into the head of Iroha Isshiki, Yukino and Haruno Yukinoshita, Hayato Hayama, and even Komachi Hikigaya. And a bit more of that if you read the final volume, 14.5. But the star of these scenes will always be Yui, the glue that holds them all together at the end - at great pain.
But in Volume 14 we get maybe the most convincing thing of all, something that I needed after seeing Hikki's indecisiveness for so long. He sums it up like this:
"I wish it had been a simpler kind of feeling. If it had been ordinary love or yearning, then I'm sure I wouldn't have felt so intensely. I wouldn't feel like this only happened once in a lifetime."
This is during Hachiman's confession. He says he wasn't struggling so much with being in love or a crush. What took him so long was figuring out a very complex feeling. (The passage is longer.) He's apparently able to discern between teenager hormones and the fact how well suited he is to be with this particular person, and how important that is to the other - to be seen, understood, and be loved at a deeper level. But the complexity is also discerning it from the love he already feels - like he would for Yui.
Other things you get from the books
One of the best things about the books besides Totsuka fantasies is the ability to read Iroha's terribly revealing rejections to Hachiman, each of them escalating over the previous one, getting ever more like invitations to ask her out just not right now. And her increasing complaints that he doesn't listen at all when she says them.
Also Irohasu's merciless teasing is best paced in the books. And Hachiman's opinion of her. These two would have chemistry for sure. It's just that this particular protagonist was made from the beginning for a particular heroine, and that's what I find so convincing about this series' narrative.
Sadly volume 14.5 only treats us to only one date between Yukino and Hachiman. I was hoping for more, but I take what I get. Even on their one month anniversary they're still all blushing smiles and red ears, but at the same time Yukino is already setting out a common future. Very cute.
If you want a real treat, however, search the internet. There are several anthology volumes filled with content mostly by other authors borrowing the characters - but also the short story "Thus A New Enemy Appears Before Him" from the anthology called "Yukino's Side" written by Wataru Watari himself. It has been translated by fans - I couldn't find a way to buy an actual English translation for any of this. The short story, however, is told from the vantage of Yukino's dad - his perceptions of the three highly intelligent women in his life and how they establish facts for him. The eternal struggle of the future father-in-law is real! The way he finds out that his youngest has a boyfriend had me in stitches. Also, Yukino's mom is on her game the whole time. Basically him mostly watching as his wife, Haruno, and Yukino interact is ... priceless.

Are you familiar with the Tezuka Star System? It was essentially Tezuka reusing characters as actors for different stories (i.e., a character who was an anti-hero in a sci-fi story shows up in a horror story as an antagonist). Ishinomori also had a star system, with one example being him reusing his 1961 character Mutant Sabu for Inazuman's Goro Watari.
are you just saying they like re-used concepts

so i heard making fun of death note is cool again and i just want to say the fact that not a single person thought ‘a worldclass detective thinks there’s a very serious chance he’s a serial killer’ was a good reason to try and get light some kind of therapy is probably a pretty good explanation for why he’s a serial killer in the first place
i know there’s different cultural norms and also it was fifteen years ago, but seriously there is a time and a place for mental health interventions and your only son immediately latching onto the mildly deranged detective who accused him of mass murder as his best friend in the whole world is definitely one of them. i know soichiro sucks ass but what about his mum? or his sister even? how has a single person never looked at light ‘i genuinely read playboy for the articles’ yagami and gone ‘even if he isn’t kira he’s definitely messed the hell up’
and that is a semi serious actual point but also join me in imagining matsuda arranging an intervention (and trying to explain the concept of mental health to watari who has definitely never heard of it before based on the children he raises) complete with a banner and probably a wildly inappropriate cake. just imagine the taskforce sitting around not eating cake because they’re too uncomfortable while matsuda explains anti-social personality disorder very seriously and L stuffs his face with ‘sorry you might be a serial killer’ cake while Light tries to figure out what the fuck the Real Boy TM response is because nothing in his life thus far has prepared him for this and he’s trying to weigh up whether it’s appropriate to cry but also he’s never cried in his life and he’s not sure he actually knows how and maybe it’s worth L knowing the truth if he gets to kill everyone else in this room but if he does then L won’t want to be his bestest best friend anymore and oh shit maybe matsuda is right...
#death note#light yagami may be the only person hannibal lectur would genuinely make better#because there's really no way to make him worse#yes i know there's an extremely japanese running theme of repression in dn#but there has to be a limit#and light is so far past it his almost approaching sanity again but from the opposite direction

Algo bem similar a série do ano anterior sa franquia Super sentai,o Mirai Sentai Timeranger.
A terceira é Llly.
Jikuu Keisatsu Wecker Signa(2007)

Death Note: anti-hero idealism
Warning! Major spoilers ahead.
What would you do if you discovered a notebook that could kill people just by writing their names on the pages? Would you kill for fun? Impose a new world order? Think you’re a god? When Light Yagami discovers the titular article, he decides to do all three. And what results is an enthralling exploration of the human condition, specifically the complex interplay of arrogance, idealism and power.
Quick recap: Light Yagami is the genius son of a detective and his wife. One day, outside his school, he sees a notebook drop from the sky. When he picks it up, he discovers that it is a Death Note, with instructions written inside for its use. Suddenly struck by radical idealism after testing it out twice and realizing it was legit, Light begins to plan out what could essentially be called a systematic genocide...only it was with criminals broadcast on the news. Acceptable? His increasing number of murders attracts the attention of radical fans who dub him Kira and swear allegiance, and unfortunately of global investigation agencies. They send their best detective L (who, before his introduction, has already deduced Light resides in Japan) to find out more about this Kira. If that didn’t already make for an exciting cat-and-mouse-mystery-chase, wait till you see the way Light begins outsmarting his own detective dad, who joins L’s team to bring down Kira. Or the way Light has his memory erased just to avoid being caught by L.
I’m sure everyone’s heard of the Socratic maxim: “I know that I know nothing.” It could be considered an old-fashioned warning against the Dunning-Kruger effect (aka overestimating yourself). If Light was a real character who existed at the time, he would have just written down Socrates' name in the Death Note with a slight smirk. In Light’s eyes, he knows he knows best. He knows the deeply corrupt nature of the world, the injustices that go about unpunished, the sinners that are left to roam the earth. And more importantly, he knows that only he really knows that you can murder people by writing down their names in a notebook.
That’s why his character is so fascinating. He embarks on what one could consider a genocide, fuelled with an idealistic vision of making the world a better place (like every fascist leader ever?). And what’s more worrisome, and equally captivating, is that Light is an absolute genius. He’s cold, concise and cunning, keeping the entire investigation wrapped around his little finger. The success of his murders is also tangible: there is a drastic decrease in crime, with much of the public revering Kira and his swift, decisive judgement. And Light is slowly consumed by this power. It slowly becomes less about the world-as-a-better-place and more about Light-as-new-god.
Although you could parallel his trajectory with a fascist, you could also do so with yourself. Or even someone you know. It’s almost natural to become so lost in an ideal or a principle, something we hold so deep to us it alters our actions and judgement forevermore. Light is, after all, just an eighteen year old highschool student. One really couldn’t say he is the villain of the show. He’s perfectly human: he was a disillusioned, cynical child who, upon obtaining power, was filled with an arrogance and idealism that were so intertwined they could not be separated. He wanted better for everyone. He wanted the evil to suffer. At the heart of it all, he was really just being a petulant child. One so gripped by his idealisms, he is even willing to sacrifice his family to see his dreams fulfilled. But still, just a child.
My grandfather once told me that good literature gives you a better insight with human character than anything else. Sometimes even more than personal experience. I believe the same can be said about good anime. While Death Note’s plot is still fantastical, the character types you see provide a realistic insight to human nature. Although I must admit, I stopped watching the series after Light killed Watari and L because...L just deserved better. But I have to pick it up again. After all, I wonder to what fate Light’s trajectory will lead him.

Q. 6-10, 15, 19, 22, 26 & 27 for DN salty asks please? <3
6 Has DN ever made you enjoy a fandom you previously hated? None I previously hated. But when people first said Ryuk/Light I took it as a joke. Then, slowly... It's not a joke anymore. Now I'm onboard lol.
7 Is there anything you used to like but you can't stand now? Light is a bad person and we all make jokes at his expense. Some of them line up with his character enough that I include them in stuff I write. Like Light being a repressed gay man etc or a misogynist. Those ideas are worth exploring for a lot of reasons! And some of those jokes are funny! But I think there's a fine line when you're using those as punchlines. It doesn't bother me as much as I know it bothers some other people but I think we should be careful that in making a statement about Light, the character, we're not insulting a community of real closeted people.
8 Have you ever received anon hate? What about? I've received interesting hate across multiple different fandoms, never from the places I expect either, for Death Note specifically I've been told "I won't go into detail but your stuff is really bad. Look up a youtube video, maybe take a writing class." Which, given the full message this person sent and the fact they said it anonymously? Pretty funny shit.
9 Most dislikes character? Why? | This sounds incredibly petty but I really don't like Raye Penber. The English dub makes him say some horribly sexist things. And, yes, the other characters say way worse but the show paints them as the bad guys. I am seemingly supposed to be sad, with Naomi, when Raye dies because "he was such a decent man" but in the one scene we had of him he immediately make me dislike him???
10 Most disliked arc? Why? I really love Mello, Near and Mikami. Sometimes I feel like I don't appreciate them enough. And my perfect Death Note timeline would include all three of them. But I really have trouble paying any attention after L dies. My whole grasp on the Arc is sloppy just because I've watched/read it waaaay less.
15 Unpopular opinion about the manga/show? I really dont like the second anime opening. It feels like it belongs, musically, to a totally different show. The first opening gets all meta and shit which is the perfect level of pretentious but it also sounds good. I just... I don't like the second opening.
19 What is one thing you hate most about your fandom? I hate antis in any fandom. Puritanical nanny bots are the worst. Particularly in Death Note because... Well, none of these people are portrayed as uninterrupted good, none of them get a pass, we're sitting in the mud. Then you try and tell me its "gross to ship L/Light because of the age difference!" like, honey, we've got WAY BIGGER PROBLEMS to talk about here. It just seems so backwards to get hyper ethical about a series that spits on ethics and comfort.
22 Popular character you hate? I dont hate him but I dont see what the big deal is with Matt/Mail Jeeves. He's like... I don't get it. But I know people love him. Maybe cause you can insert a lot onto him? You do you, guys.
26 Most shippable character? The trash king himself; Light Yagami. He just writes himself into a world of interesting options and plotlines, ya know? And he's such a chameleon/homme fatale that he would try it once, with pretty much anyone, if he needed something from them.
27 Least shippable character? Watari. Cause you could ship Watari with a lot of people. But I don't think I, personally, would be interested in reading many of those fics for a range of reasons.

happy birthday L here’s a vaguely outdated analysis
general thoughts/starting points
aversion to teamwork/preference for working alone and directing people to do the more hands-on parts of investigating
implications that he values being in control
passion
often overlooked in favor of his more obvious traits
represented most clearly in mello
calm and stable
generally seen as his most obvious traits
represented most clearly in near
“grey” morals
despite being "the good guy" of the story, L cannot be described as a good person or a hero. he can best be labelled as an anti-villain, or, "a character with heroic goals, personality traits, and/or virtues who is ultimately the villain. Their desired ends are mostly good, but their means of getting there range from evil to undesirable." (defined by tv tropes)
intelligent, likely equal to that of light
in the english htr13 stats, light’s intelligence is listed as 9/10 while l’s is 8/10. this is due to a translation error in which the statistic was originally meant to be listed as “knowledge.”
neurodivergence
L is probably one of the most heavily neurodivergent characters out of any shows i’ve watched up to this point. because of the time he would’ve been diagnosed with aspergers, but he’s definitely somewhere in the autism spectrum. some of the most major tells for this are his social isolation, fidgeting/repetitive actions (specifically stacking things), and showing few emotions (doesn’t apply to everyone, but is still common)
liar, potentially compulsive or pathological
compulsive - lying with what seems to be no clear goal or ability to stop, often born of habit
pathological - lies have a clear motive, with intent to manipulate
motive (or lack therefore) behind the things he says is debatable
what to and what not to take with a grain of salt is largely subjective, although, it can be assumed that at least some of his “percentages” were meaningless (e.g., he told light that he was one of the least likely suspects with one of the lowest percentages of probability. he often openly contradicts this. knowing that the majority of percentages regarding light were skewed at the least, its not unreasonable to think they were all inaccurate.
near also employs this use of percentages. while they could resemble different things for each, it may still be worth noting.
other traits
sarcastic, with a dry sense of humor
pride/arrogance(?)
low social and life skills
seems to have a notable relationship with the supernatural/spiritual
briefly considered in the beginning that kira was a god, but let go of the idea on the assumption that god wouldn't need names and faces
reacted harshly to the mention of shinigami in a response video from the second kira. he seemed unwilling at first to accept that shinigami meant exactly what it said, and later stated that he hoped it Wasn't a god of death
knowing that he would soon die, L "atones for [his] sins" by drying light's feet for him. in some denominations of christianity, "foot washing" is used to represent an act of great humility, inspired by the actions of jesus christ washing his disciples feet in the days before his death. this could, however, just be symbolism meant to foreshadow L's death. alternatively, it could be seen as a mark of the way his views have developed over his time on the case
his apparent hesitation regarding things of this nature could be caused by a lack of understanding. as a very prideful person who tends to second guess everything he's given, it would make sense that suddenly being forced to change his entire worldview would cause shock and, at least, mild unwillingness to approach it
it could also be the result of feeling that he may no longer be in control. L is, as he's shown to the viewer, a leader. he decides what cases he takes, why, and directs those working on the field until he's done. in addition to having to let go of some of that control for this case (by revealing himself and working alongside others instead of just instructing them), he would also have to release full control of his perception of the world around him
relationships
mello and near
mello and near, as the top two choices for L's successor, represent two major parts of L; his passion and intensity (shown through mello) and his tendency to be analytical and collected (shown through near). upon first glance, L is often characterized as being very calm and detached from other people. it may be a stretch, but this can also be seen in the relationship between near and mello themselves, with mello being the "second" and feeling overshadowed by near, who is often read as the "copy" of L
L served as a major inspiration and motivation for both near and mello, seeing how both expressed what could be considered disappointment. mello became angry that L hadn't managed to beat kira, while near's statement about how not being able to "solve the puzzle" and "beat the game" makes you a loser could be read as comment on L's inability to catch light
on that note, i think that L had to have been in contact with them at least a few times
near, as "number one," may have spent the most time with L, potentially having even met him in person as referenced by the similarities in the way both physically act, though this could be mere coincidence. in addition, his methods of investigating are far more similar to L's than mello's are, implying that he was able to study how L thought and went about doing things to the point where he was able to personally recreate and even correct them. while this distinction could also be influenced by a difference in resources, its still clear from their individual characters that even left under the exact same circumstances, they'd want to take different approaches to the issues at hand.
despite having likely spent less time together, i feel as though the relationship mello and L might've shared wasn't quite the same as that with L and near. mello was distraught upon learning of L's death, largely, in part, because L had promised that he would catch kira. this implies that, even if they truly had only interacted once, mello put a lot of faith in L as someone he could not only look up to, but as someone he could depend on and trust.
watari
the relationship between L and watari is never openly addressed, however, we see watari acting not only as L’s representative and caretaker, but also a genuine father figure. during the flashback before his death, we see watari personally bringing L to wammy's house, and in present time, we see L go to watari, presumably for comfort.
light yagami
as light was kira, there was naturally going to be a tension between him and L. the relationship they had was built on lies, competition, and manipulation. they act as foils of each other; light was a hard-working, handsome honour student and son of the police chief, while L was an overall eccentric and rude detective who hid everything about himself that he could. this difference between their surfaces emphasizes just how similar they actually are, being both extremely intelligent with a strong sense of justice (seeing themselves As justice) and the ability to stand out from those around them. at one point, L says that light is his first friend. it's not unlikely that this was a stretch of the truth, however, i wouldn't be surprised if L truly had grown attached to light. light matched him for skill and intelligence, surpassed him in many other areas, and provided the challenge that L sought in his cases.
