A new bill in Iowa would make attending drag performances with one’s own kids a felony punishable by up to five years in jail, and it just moved out of an Iowa House of Representatives subcommittee. The language of the bill is so broad that it could include any performance involving a transgender person, even if it’s not a drag performance, opponents argue.

House Study Bill 158 would make it illegal to take a minor to a drag performance, even if that performance is family-friendly. Parents could be charged with a class D felony if they take their kids to a drag story hour, and businesses could be fined $10,000 for allowing minors to attend such a performance. The bill isn’t about lewd drag performances; it’s about any performance where a performer wears “clothing, makeup, accessories or other gender signifiers” that are “different than the performer’s gender assigned at birth.” The bill says this applies to any show that includes singing, dancing, reading, or performing “before an audience for entertainment.” Maxwell Mowitz of the LGBTQ+ organization One Iowa told the subcommittee that the bill could make it illegal for people to bring children to hear him speak because he’s transgender, the Iowa Capital Dispatch reports. “I’m a transgender person,” he said. “I was assigned female at birth, but I dress and live as a masculine person. 3) two women are forced to dress up as men to, like, do a mulan or something. neither know the other, both assume they are the only woman there. then their identities are revealed to one another (doesnt matter how..), and they r like "ok lets FRICK ;)". I am transmasc and sapphic, can u tell I came up with this idea BEFORE realizing I was transmasc and sapphic

4) ENTHUSIASTIC SEX WITH A TENTACLE MONSTER. U KNOW EACH OTHER AND TRUST EACH OTHER AND LOVE EACH OTHER. ROMANTIC CHEESY VANILLA SEX WITH A MONSTER IN GENERAL

(S1E3) The Owl House: How Companies Disrespect Animated Shows

A relatively new show to join the ranks of some of Disney’s BEST animated shows, The Owl House was created in 2020 by Dana Terrace, and is the last of the Disney Channel’s serialized cartoon shows (more on that later…). It follows the adventures of Luz Noceda, a regular teen girl, who was magically transported into another world, named the Boiling Isles, full of witches and (friendly) demons and all sorts of neat creatures. There, she trains with her mentor, Eda the Owl Lady (and a demon named King), on how to become a witch and use magic, even though she, as a human, has no natural magical powers of her own. The story is, in my opinion, extremely well done, and I fell in LOVE with every single character. The only issue is that it felt a liiiittle bit too short… And let me tell you why.

While the second season was airing, it was revealed that The Owl House would end prematurely, and the show’s third season, which was already planned out, would be shortened to three specials, instead of the usual 20ish 22-minute episodes a season would have. Many ideas had to be cut, and a lot of character development had to be shortened in the process. A lot of fans were sad, disappointed, and outright outraged, including me! Such an amazing show didn't deserve the short end of the stick. The question on most of the fandom’s mind was “Why?”, and Disney tried to answer.

Dana Terrace (The show’s creator) has gone on record saying that the show didn't fit the Disney "brand". She mentioned the fact that Disney TVA wanted to move away from serialized content, as it’s mostly older kids, teens, and adults who could keep up with those kinds of shows. The Disney Channel wanted to keep their target audience a tad younger, so that meant getting rid of shows with linear storylines and introducing more shows that you could jump into at any episode.

However, many fans have speculated that this was because the show contains a lot of queer themes and characters, and Disney has shown over and over again that even though they may seem progressive, they show many homophobic tendencies. Examples of this are removing gay scenes or characters from their movies when they’re released in homophobic countries, and boasting about their “first gay/lesbian/bi/trans character!!!” while only giving them a blink-and-you-miss-it moment that mentions their identity. Knowing this, it feels like Disney’s intentions were different than they lead us to believe.

No matter what the REAL reason was for the cancellation, I’m still extremely upset. If it’s for the anti-queer reason, it would hurt, as I grew up watching Disney movies and shows, and shortening a show because of characters who are LGBT, just like me, would frankly be offensive. But the other reason would hurt just as much. Animation is constantly referred to as a “children’s genre”, both by the general public and the film industry itself. Anyone older than mid-teens is often discouraged from watching animated shows and movies unless they’re specifically targeted at that demographic. Because of this, a lot of people are missing out on some really great stories and incredible visuals. My own mother made fun of me for preferring the animated Mulan movie to its abysmal 2020 live-action counterpart. I LOVE animation, and I feel like it’s constantly being mistreated by those who are meant to defend it. And that leads to beautiful pieces of art being, well, cancelled and shortened.

But hey, at least The Owl House got to properly end, right? Unlike some other shows…

Honestly Mulan finding the most success as a man when he (using he in the trans man interpretation) does things his own way is also a good lesson for transmascs and trans men especially, that you don’t need to cling to femininity that you don’t want. He’s so convinced that he’s only pretending, that being a woman is the correct thing to be, that it gets in his way until he decides to focus on what he’s actually doing rather than if he counts as a man or not. There is a lot of anti-transmasculinity deeply imbedded in the trans community (which is only starting to get addressed, mainly by trans men and mascs because we are punished the most by it) to the point that binary* trans guys will “soften” themselves up, so to speak, to appear more feminine in order to be accepted as less threatening to the people who are supposed to affirm them. I’m not talking about feminine trans guys who want to be feminine, I mean that there are plenty of trans guys, myself included, who forced ourselves into thinking we were non-binary long after we started to realize we were men, because it was perceived as “safer,” were told to use “transmasc” when we want to use “trans man,” that all I heard from people around me was that being A Man was the line I couldn’t cross. That in order to get empathy, support, basic human dignity, or a recognition of struggle, I had to stay as close to a woman as possible. That once I crossed it, I would be basically exiled from the community. I lost time in being a man because of this attitude. A lot of queer/trans people can accept trans men for being trans, but not for being men, and that is a serious issue.

But I decided to embrace masculinity, manhood, with no caveats or apologies. Like Mulan, there are plenty of people in this “community” who hate that, who would rather see me in pain than for them to have to reckon with their bigotry. And like Mulan, learning to embrace manhood (I like being a pretty guy as much as the next person but I am first and foremost a MAN), has served me much better than hiding who I was to try and fit in with dominant and oppressive attitudes of an in-group social hierarchy ever did. Wider cishet society already makes you apologize enough for wanting to be a man, you don’t have to accept that sort of bullshit from other trans people, ESPECIALLY non-trans men.

Once you embrace that, you’ll shock yourself with how much better your life becomes. Be a man <3 You can do it. You don’t need anyone’s permission.

i think the reason why Reflection & mulan as a trans man is impactful to me is the fact that mulan appears as a woman and has the social role of a woman. i love rep of transmascs who are fully transitioned/present masc or male! but ive thought a lot about the erasure & invisibility of transmascs throughout history. the bits of our history we do have tend to be people who had the ability to pass as men, but there were undoubtedly so many trans men&mascs who lived as women, who could not pass well enough to live full-time as a man, who were wives and mothers! and idk i find it really impactful to read Reflection as the pain of a trans man in the closet, or who doesn't even realize that being a man is a Thing they can Do. i love how it touches on the pain of failing to be a woman. i think part of it is how often people want to dissociate trans men from misogyny, or at least control how we are "supposed" to relate to it. again, the mainstream (queer) narrative around transmasc history (and present) is trans men who could/can pass as cis men, who live their lives fully stealth. but there are and always have been many transmascs who live as women, most or all of the time, and who have to struggle with the demands of misogyny to be good daughters/wives/mothers, and the knowledge that to be a trans man would make you such a disgrace and disappointment ("if i were truly to be myself, i would break my family's heart"). i think its important to give a voice to the trans men past and present who live as women and their gendered experiences! i desperately want to give a voice to every trans man throughout time who lived and died in a dress, who had children, who thought they were the only one or who didn't even understand what or why they were.

obviously mulan does crossdress and does pass as a cis man, but specifically "Reflection" to me means a lot because i love how it can be read to be an expression of closeted transmasculinity. with transmascs, the bits of history we do get are constantly scrutinized by everyone; there's an unspoken rule of "cis woman until proven otherwise, why do you want to erase women?" and again! thats just when it comes to "women who crossdress" situations! people are so stingy when it comes to who they will "allow" transmascs to claim, seeing a "feminine cis woman" expressing transmasculinity feels transgressive in a very good way to me. also, i think we need more recognition that there are a lot of feminine women who really wish they were men (because they are), and its important to represent that experience and make it clear that being feminine (while presenting as a woman, or in general) does not mean you can't be a man.

Voltron Season 1 Thoughts (Review)

Season 1 was a very good introduction to the series. We learned a bit of each character’s base personality and went into depth with some of them such as Pidge and Allura and even bits and pieces of Shiro’s past. We got to see Voltron’s power and the Galra’s cruelty and how seeing that cruelty changed Hunk.

Shay was being oppressed and when he realised he could do something about that, Hunk grew. He stopped being a coward and scared and changed. That was amazing character development on his part.

Pidge also had some good character development this season, going from pushing everyone away to find her family to coming to realise that the team was her family. Hunk and Pidge were probably the two characters who evolved the most in this season and I love that.

I don’t support the trans Pidge headcanon. I believe Pidge was happy to be a girl but made the same decision Mulan did where she chose to pose as a boy to help her family. But she seemed miserable cutting her hair and struggled to let the others in close until she told them she was a girl. I am not super pro- LGBTQ+ but I am okay with same sex couples as long as its not turned into a fetish. However, I am anti-transgenderism. I don’t like it. No hate for the people but it makes me uncomfortable.

Hunk/Shay is adorable though. I support it. I will read it. I write it too. Keith started off interesting and I love his bad boy traits, so sexy and it made him very cool but he also feels very one-note this season. Still sexy, but I don’t like his personality very much. Shiro and Allura do really shine for me this season too though. Shiro is very strong – struggling with PTSD, which was written awesome but still being there for everyone and trying his best as leader.

And Allura, omg girl, my heart. You lost your planet, your people, your family and you’re still fighting for the greater good. Like that is true kindness. The way she helped the Balmera omg and her speech brought tears to my eyes. She definitely is my favourite this season, followed by Shiro.

Lance annoyed me. Like he’s not bad, I know but this season wasn’t really good for him or for Keith, but he’s too shallow for me to like him just yet. The parade stuff and constant flirting annoyed me a lot. I think the only time I liked him was when he defended Pidge in the first episode, like covered her mouth and all to keep her from getting in trouble. Weirdly enough, the two moments I liked him were when he was defending Pidge, once from Iverson and once from Sendak. I think I’ve always been a Plance shipper lol but never admitted it because it felt like that one odd ship.

Overall, I feel this season was a good introduction to the series but it’s not one I rewatch constantly as a whole season. Oh forgot to mention, I also liked the little snippets we got of Shiro and Keith’s brotherly bond. Keith rescuing Shiro from quarantine was probably his best moment to me in this series as well as protecting him when he had a PTSD attack. So yeah, that was sweet!

TSSides Anti-Fairytale AU

I’m not coming for fairytales. They have their place, but as an aromantic person...I do not feel seen. And then I decided to re-watch Enchanted (pirated, of course, because fuck Disney). And then this idea happened. 

Patton was a child-king who married his best friend when forced to, and then she died in childbirth. He’s given Roman everything he could, but he’s lived his life dictated by the advisors who’ve used him as a puppet king his whole rule. He’s miserable because he doesn’t like how the system functions but he thinks he’s chained to tradition.

Roman copes with his complicated relationship with his father by questing and almost dying, like, every other week. Anxious attachment for days. Boy keeps trying very hard to find a princess and can’t seem to figure out why nothing will stick. To which Patton goes “oh. He got it from me. Oops.”

All I know is Remus is aromantic and aplatonic and exactly as chaotic as he should be.

Roman’s birthday. Ball. The classic. He greets all the noble families and he’s seen those losers a bunch before, but this time, he meets a new “girl” with a family he usually hates who intrigues him. He is not a girl and I will not be misgendering him because ew, but, gist: Virgil, transphobic rich parents forcing him to conform to gender roles, absolutely miserable, in Peak Bitch (gender-neutral) form. Roman mistakenly believes he’s cured and talks Virgil up a lot. Convinces himself he’s fallen madly in love.

Problem is, he tells Patton, who’s shocked he found a “girl” but absolutely is on-board, and then goes to the family to ask for Virgil’s hand and there’s no Virgil.

Thus begins the Mulan ripoff but openly trans where Virgil poses as a boy servant at the castle because his parents can’t get into the castle willy-nilly and it’s the safest place to be. Absolutely loathes Roman’s very existence because that dumb bitch flirted with him while he was a girl and therefore VIrgil thinks he is The WorstTM. Then Roman catches him grouching about and decides to solve this by teaching him sword-play, mostly to give him the excuse to beat on a dummy with a sword-shaped stick. 

Meanwhile Roman is just le sigh I did it again. I connected more with a boy than a girl. Why did she have to run away? Now I’m doomed to be weird.

Well then assassins break into the castle and Ever-Paranoid Virgil immediately susses them out as bad news and uses the remnants of the ball to absolutely wreck them when they try to kill Roman and his father while they’re taking a rare opportunity to chat and bond. Patton decides he is Adopting This Child, fuck you, advisors, he’s as thin as a stick, and Virgil now gets to eat with the royal family. 

It’s the first time Patton has ever actually told his advisors to go fuck themselves. It’s the first step toward a positive turnaround and it happened because Patton’s dad instincts took over and nothing in the world is more valid than that, fight me.

Enter genderqueer icon morally neutral witch, Janus, all pronouns, who’s trying to topple the monarchy to enact lasting change and didn’t want to dirty her hands right away, but honestly people are so unreliable. So he gets onto Patton’s crew as a handmaiden and excuse you who gave the king permission to be actually endearing?

Roman feels slightly weird because Patton’s calling Virgil “kiddo” and he’s not calling him his son but he also treats him very similarly as he does to Roman and Remus, which isn’t great but is significantly better than it could be, but Roman’s got a crush. 

Then Janus finds out Virgil’s trans and reveals this. Virgil thinks he’s about to get blackmailed into murdering the only people who have ever cared about him and then Janus just rolls their eyes like “excuse you I’m evil not psychopathic. I can give you a potion to make your body reflect your mind. You in?”

“Great, so my only cure to stop feeling like frozen trash reheated in a forest fire is to accept the highly dangerous bribe of a definitely evil witch! Thanks! I hate it!”

Yes Virgil memes even in a fantasy world where Tumblr doesn’t exist.

Also Virgil and Roman are bonding. A lot. They’re getting very close and Virgil even lets slip that he loves Roman and then tries to fling himself out a window. Roman gets touched, stops him, and tries to kiss him, but Virgil leans away. Roman expresses confusion.

“I...I love you, but I don’t want to kiss you.”

“I don’t understand.”

“I don’t either. But I’ve...never wanted to kiss anyone. For any reason.”

“But...you still love me?”

“I do. I’m sorry.”

Roman...doesn’t feel as rejected as he thinks he maybe should? Honestly, it’s not totally a relief, but it’s just kinda...neutral. It’s not even a disappointment. 

Well, Janus is not evil and actually wants to run a kingdom (instating a committee mixed of educated rich fucks and working class receiving education) a whole lot more than Patton, who thinks she’s just...kinda awesome and very misunderstood. There’s a lot of hissing and grumbling that they’re not misunderstood, they’re evil, they don’t even have a tragic backstory, they just kill people to enact the change they want to see, just because they got ditched in a forest as a baby and was raised by a magic snake means nothing. The snake was a very loving and supportive parent.

Roman talks to Patton and Patton is like “fuck marriage rules. Fuck heteronormativity. Fuck my advisors. My kingdom is a haven for the gays. All the gays. Of every color. Come here and be merry and queer.”

Virgil’s just like “yo no reason but in this new world where it’s okay to love whatever gender is it maybe cool to be a boy when the world says you’re a girl?”

Janus draws a knife and glares at Patton and Patton’s just like “even if my partner wasn’t threatening to kill me I’d say it was fine why?”

“No reason.”

“Virgil.”

“What?”

“Is there something you want to share?”

“No.”

“Is there something you need to share?”

“Fuck you.”

“You’re being defensive again, Storm Grouch.”

Virgil sticks his tongue out. “Fine. People used to think I was a girl and I have a stupid body. Happy?”

And Patton learns from Janus the fine art of Validating The Fuck Out Of Gender.

The advisors stage a coop and lock Janus in an anti-magic cage, and then at the same time Virgil’s biological nightmares track him down and steal a spelled green apple from Janus’ shop they give Virgil. You know the drill. Deep sleep like death, yadda yadda.

Well, they immediately claim the body making a big dramatic deal about how they have to bury “her” and they’ll take “her” home to see her off and it’s so tragic, just as they were reunited, when the reality is they have the antidote back home, they’re just looking for control over his life again.

Except Roman goes off. “He is staying here where he--where he will be buried under the name Virgil dressed properly and if you came anywhere near his body I’ll kill you myself.”

Guess what constitutes a totally platonic, non-kiss related act of queerplatonic true love, bitch? Fighting your transphobic partner’s parents over their dead body.

Kingdom’s retaken, sweeping reform while Patton retires to be a stay at home dad to fix his relationship with his kids. Virgil gets formerly adopted. The stepparent is actually a morally neutral genderqueer witch who runs the kingdom fairly and justly, the central love story is trans and aromantic, and my queer ass is something resembling happy.

Logan is probably one of the advisors and the only one with sense who probably starts knocking off his coworkers after the coop because they’re all deeply, deeply stupid. Remus probably spends half the story making friends with a troll he brings in to save the day in the third act.
