SEMIFINALS: Queer Fantasy Books Bracket
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book summaries below:
The Locked Tomb series (Gideon the Ninth, Harrow the Ninth, Nona the Ninth, and others) by Tamsyn Muir
The Emperor needs necromancers.
The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.
Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit.
Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won't set her free without a service.
Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier.
Without Gideon's sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die. Of course, some things are better left dead.

Monstrous Regiment (Discworld) by Terry Pratchett
Polly Perks joins the Discworld army to find her brother Paul. "Ozzer" cuts off her blonde braids, dons male garb, belches, scratches, and masters macho habits - aided by well-placed pair of socks. The legendary and seemingly ageless Sergeant Jackrum accepts her plus a vampire, troll, zombie, religious fanatic, and two close "friends". The best man for the job may be a woman.
Fantasy, humor, war, secondary (disc)world

If I had a nickel for every time Terry Pratchett wrote a character with such strong trans vibes it's almost canon I'd have... well somewhere between two and five nickels, give or take, depending on where you draw the line.

Jack Jackrum. Discworld.
Hello! I'm Anton Alexandrov, on the PontPilat network. For several years I have been drawing characters from Sir Terry Pratchett's books. Now there are already about 100 of them drawn. I will periodically post them on Tumbler. Your opinion is always interesting - does the concept of the character coincide with your idea of him?

Lies down on the ground.
Jack Jackrum is probably named after the famous folk song Jackaroe (also occasionally called "Jackaroo" or "Jackarum"). Which is my favorite 'woman crossdresses to join the army' folk song of all time bar none.
How did I fucking MISS TH-

I feel like Jackrum and Polly both do “funny as long as they were useless, and safe as long as they were funny” thing. Jackrum plays up the jolly fat man routine to manipulate people into getting what he wants and discouraging people from further investigation, just as Pols acted like the ditzy bargirl to avoid abomination and convince people let their guard down. I think they both got it instilled in them for similar reasons, being a girl in an overly conservative and militaristic country. They both use it in the regiment when dealing with the higher ups.
This isnt as articulate as I would have liked but whatever.

the thing about jack jackrum. ok let me back up a bit: i reblogged a post a few days ago talking about how there are plenty of cis people who don't have an innate sense of gender connected to their agab, but don't have dysphoria so they just. vibe. the 'i just work here' of gender identity. borogravian society does not really have an idea of being transgender, so they're entirely working off gender = sex = genitals at birth. if jackrum had been born in a world where his beloved never went off to war, and he never decided to follow him, would he have been happy as a woman? if he'd grown up today, in roundworld, would he have been a trans man? there's no way to know. but what we do know is that he's been (for all intents and purposes) a man for possibly 60 years, and doesn't want to give it up at the end of the novel. maybe that's because he loves being a man, maybe that's because he just doesn't feel a strong connection to womanhood and it's easier. either way, he makes his choice, and i want to know who changed the pronouns in his last scene of the american version of the novel so we can have a chat.

The Masquerade Series (The Traitor Baru Cormorant, The Monster Baru Cormorant, The Tyrant Baru Cormorant) by Seth Dickinson
Tomorrow, on the beach, Baru Cormorant will look up from the sand of her home and see red sails on the horizon. The Empire of Masks is coming, armed with coin and ink, doctrine and compass, soap and lies. They'll conquer Baru’s island, rewrite her culture, criminalize her customs, and dispose of one of her fathers. But Baru is patient. She'll swallow her hate, prove her talent, and join the Masquerade. She will learn the secrets of empire. She’ll be exactly what they need. And she'll claw her way high enough up the rungs of power to set her people free. In a final test of her loyalty, the Masquerade will send Baru to bring order to distant Aurdwynn, a snakepit of rebels, informants, and seditious dukes. Aurdwynn kills everyone who tries to rule it. To survive, Baru will need to untangle this land’s intricate web of treachery - and conceal her attraction to the dangerously fascinating Duchess Tain Hu. But Baru is a savant in games of power, as ruthless in her tactics as she is fixated on her goals. In the calculus of her schemes, all ledgers must be balanced, and the price of liberation paid in full. Fantasy, epic fantasy, secondary world, politics, series

Monstrous Regiments DND classes for funsies
Jackrum is a battle master fighter + Oath of Conquest paladin. He’s mostly a paladin cause I think it’s really funny for when he says “upon my oath”
Polly is a bit here and there, but I think she’s a rogue-fighter, probably mastermind and battle master respectively. She needs the cunning and the charisma to get Rupert’s moving with her plans, but also just hits good
Tonker is full barbarian, beserker for sure. As Maladict says, girl has a lot of unresolved issues and she’s just gonna go batshit
Lofty is a wizard. She has every single possible fire spell and she doesn’t speak much but when she does it’s to suggest she casts a level 9 fireball on everyone
Wazzer is a devotion paladin. She vowed her oath to the duchess a longgggggg time ago and now she’s ready to fight. I could also be convinced of her being a war domain cleric tbh
Maladict I’m unsure of. Rogue-Fighter that took unarmed fighting as a feat? Idk, him being a vampire makes things hard
Igorina is a bit similar, but I think it’s funny to make her a Life Domain cleric. Just instead of magic healing, she’s just really good at modern medicine
Shufti I don’t have a great idea for considering she mostly cooks and has good character beats in the story, and that doesn’t translate to a specific class lol
Blouse thinks he has levels in champion fighter, but is fully a mastermind rogue, just less charismatic, confident and lower levelled than Polly
