Is it just me or the fandom of animes/shows/movies are too damn toxic nowadays?

Like seriously GROW UP ALREADY, and for the love of God, GO ON with your life. If people don't like the canon/fanon ships or the characters you like, just ignore them or block them and enjoy the things you like instead of harassing or sending death threats to other people. If you do that and the other doesn't, you're only proving who's the real morally superior person here. (Hint: if you're the one harassing them, you're not the morally superior person)

I don't normally like talking about personal stuff online but... I've been feeling... Angry lately like really angry. Maybe it's just me spending way too much time with the PJO fandom. I keep throwing things and I want to just cry. But any time I'm angry it's like Riordanverse related... It's like I can't do the things I want on my Insta page. Anytime I try doing something I want l get people whining at me. I do often blame myself for being a people pleaser but... Fans started complaining about me doing Jasico or attack me for having my take on Nico di Angelo as aroace. Like what's wrong with being aroace? Nothing!

They just want me to do Solangelo this and that because everyone else is doing it. I don't want to do that, I wanna do the things I want, not what they want. I feel like I'm a slave and I have to do the things that the fans say or they'll unfollow, block, and bully me. I love Percy Jackson and all but.. in the Hunger Games fandom I feel more carefree and the fans actually like my artwork and they don't mistreat me. They let me do what I can headcanon and whatever AU, that's what the THG fan base does. But when it's PJO, it's like how the fans do in the PJO fandom, they whine and bully. Fuck they even harass people for drawing the original trio from the books on Twitter (Of course it has to be that platform where everyone is mental..) What the flying hell is wrong with you people!!?

Bullying someone or even a young CHILD for having an opinion and wanting to draw the book version? If people can't draw the book version, then why is everyone drawing both movie and book versions of Harry Potter? Explain that to me? Also the Percy Jackson fandom is by far the worst fandom I've ever seen. It's just as bad as the Harry Potter fandom (do not get me started with that atrocity of a fan base)

I don't hate good Percy Jackson and Harry Potter fans, I'm just so tired of being treated like I can't do the things I want. I can't headcanon Nico as aroace and I can't have an AU where Jason and Percy hate each other. I'm honestly just tired of the Percy Jackson fans bullshit, picking on other fans because they have a unpopular opinion or they can't draw their take on percabeth. I'm tired of toxicity and toxic people that crumple other people's enjoyment. I'm tired of being bullied, having people spread stuff about me behind my backs (I'm looking at you HTTYD fans on Instagram), cyber stalking, and having my work reposted to be shit on because its an OC of mine.

Hopefully the Hunger Games fandom is at least not as toxic as the Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, MLP, and HTTYD fandoms. Just to know, I'm not pointing fingers at good fans, they have nothing to do with this. I'm pointing at the toxicity and the bullying these toxic crybabies do to destroy people's enjoyment. It's okay to have headcanons on said character, it's normal. It doesn't go against canon, just let ppl have their fun..

Percy having a thing for Rachel was so absolutely deserved like he should have been head over heels for her. Here's why?

First meeting? Runs her through with Riptide, and where anyone would have spent the whole time yelling and arguing, Rachel quickly gauged the situation, helped Percy hide, deviated the skeletons from their orignal path all at the same time.

Percy is so awed and he should be and Rick Riordan doesn't do justice to the whole thing.

It ends on Percy saying he owes her one, almost an indication that they would meet again.

Yet Percy is terrified of running into Rachel again because he isn't sure if he could answer all her questions, most definitely because he doesn't want to drag her into the whole thing. So much so that when he sees her at Goode, he calls her "my redheaded nightmare " .

Not only has he thought of her since they last met, but he may or may not have dreamed about her, not to mention he remembered her full name after listening just once.

When he does meet her again she yet again warns him about monsters hence saving both of them.

The most important thing is Percy, who all his life has been judged blamed ridiculed, and mocked is for the very first time understood so instantaneously by Rachel. She who has been put in mortal danger every single time she meets him doesn't blame him, doesn't judge him for it, and openly takes the blame for the burning school. Even Annabeth's first response to seeing the smoke is blaming Percy despite being around him and knowing well enough for 3 years; she chooses to blame him as if she doesn't know that it's never Percy's fault. Yet Rachel, someone who he has met only twice and that too for meager few minutes, understands him and his situation so well.

All the people in the Fandom ask yourself this: Will Percy Jackson not for all that he is be absolutely head over heels and in awe of someone like that?

He can barely give her any answers at the moment, but she agrees to a death quest to help him save the world.

Throws a literal hairbrush at the Titan King and stands her ground.

Stays by him and comforts him through his depressive thoughts about dying due to the prophecy.

Falls in love with him despite knowing he has little time left.

Does her best to help him while still keeping his mind off from spiraling into dark thoughts.

Rides a literal helicopter mid-apocalypse to get to him just to warn him of the dangers?

Percy would be so absolutely over the moon in love with Rachel, were Uncle Rick not so fixated on Percabeth agenda.

The last bit is for toxic Annabeth stans:

Rachel is a genius too.

She is ambidextrous and can draw with both hands and legs; probably has exceptional memory, and her composure and quick thinking are on par with Percy himself.

I hate bringing this to looks, but I will if I get to shut up toxic fans. Annabeth is certainly beautiful, and her grey eyes are quite unique, but Rachel is the most underrated and definitely the most beautiful out of all Percy Jackson females.

The woman literally won genetic lottery with red hair and green eyes, and the only reason Uncle Rick doesn't rave about her beauty is to not make Annabeth insecure.

crime plots - let's lose ourselves in the world of crime/mafia plots! let's explore an enemies to lover dynamic between muses belonging to rival groups or the heartbreak of forbidden love between someone who can't escape the life of crime and someone who wants nothing more than to live an ordinary life. there's so much we can do here!

modern day mythology - gimme greek/roman deities and demigods causing chaos in the modern world!

fandom plots - and last but not least, let's indulge our favorite fandoms and jump into those worlds! i write a few select canons depending on the fandom but i'm also very happy to world-build and come up with some ocs! some interests of mine include asoiaf/got/hotd, harry potter (anti-jkr), star wars, marvel, dc and percy jackson!

I'm really sad. Let me tell you why I'm sad

So this whole debate is going on over on twt about wlw content and I see a lot of people giving their experiences with the wlw fandom and it's really disheartening. And from what I see the problem is not that the rest of the queer fandom is overwhelmingly mysoginistic or lesbophobic, it's that the wlw fandom is unbearable

No, really, there are so many people talking about how they've tried joining the wlw fandom but it was too toxic or they were afraid of doing it in the first place because they've seen people who had to deal with them. And the people saying this are not only gay men and transmascs, they are overwhelmingly other queer women

And I understand this, hell, I am one of those ppl afraid of the wlw fandom. That's because every time I've witnessed it they were harassing and dogpilling people for the most minor of things. I can still remember one particular occasion when the author of Percy Jackson tweeted that he sees Artemis as ace and qrts were full of people borderline threatening him and being aphobic until he backed down on it

And this is not the only time. I've seen people getting threats for headcanoning a character as bi or pan, shipped a character with a man or headcanoned a character as ace/aro. I still remember how it was in the SU fandom with Peridot

I wish it wasn't like this. I know for a fact there are nice and civil wlw fans, but a large number of people, myself included, can barely fucking find them behind all the assholes

The explanation, which I gathered from queer women active in the fandom or who used to be part of it, is that the wlw fandom is INFESTED with radfems top to bottom. Which created a hostile environment for EVERYONE including some queer women, especially bi women. All of it leading to a space dominated by radfem ideas, exclusionism and antis. And also to a very stifling creating environment, as many queer women with experience in the fandom I've seen talking about it have said that anything straying from wholesome is heavily policed

And I find it horrible, because so many queer women felt the need to distance themselves from a fandom that is FOR them, because of how toxic it is, depriving themselves of what should have been a wonderful fandom experience alongside other people that can understand and relate to them on that level. I hate it how radfems have infested every corner of the community, warping it and creating conflict. To a point where many of us get red flags when seeing someone with a lesbian pfp because of past experience. It should not be like this. I don't like doing it this, doubting my own family, but I feel like I have to, for my peace of mind at least. And yes, I mean family, because as hard as lesbian separatists tried to drive us away from each other, to make lesbians as insular as possible, to paint transmascs and bi women as traitors to womanhood, lesbians are still my family, just like any other queer out there, and it breaks my heart seeing them becoming the boogie man of online queer spaces and a shield for TERFs

The percy jackson fandom is coming back full swing and the newest discourse is over the canon character art- just the tldr- Rick made canon designs, a fan made their own designs. The fanmade designs became more popular than canon. And basically turned into the canon designs. And that same artist made percy x nico nsfw. And antis are getting pissy about it, obviously. But the art community for the percy jackson fandom would not be where it is without those redesigns. Everyone uses them, even after the show comes out i bet there will still be a significant portion of the art community who uses those designs. Pushing for an official redesign would kill the art community. Especially when the graphic novel series (based on those designs) isn't even finished yet

as much as it pains me to admit it, harry potter was a very influential series in the juvenile fiction/fantasy genre. it was widely popular and became a staple of kid's childhoods across generations. however, like a lot of initial stories in a genre, it really isn't as good as some of the more recent JF fantasy works (like PJO, for example) because the genre has evolved and improved with time. and obviously now that the author has revealed her true colors (in a sense) we can look back and notice all these little things in the books and say "hey, that's actually really problematic and harmful. we should stop promoting this." but i don't think we can completely discount the impact the series had on kid's literature.

like, did George Orwell and Jane Austen write problematic things and include offensive themes in their stories? absolutely. but their novels are still considered literary classics and taught in schools. if we try to "cancel" every book series or literary work that has ever said anything offensive, there would be very few books left. hell, even percy jackson isn't 100% perfect in every aspect.

i grew up with harry potter, not as much as i did with PJO, but it was part of my childhood. and when, years later, i learned about what the author was now using her platform for, as a young trans kid just discovering his identity, i completely turned my back on it. refused to interact with anything relating to the fandom. it wasn't until early this year that i got into the marauders fandom. and sure, i was hesitant at first. but what i like about the marauders fandom is that it took the world that original series introduced and turned it into their own thing. at this point, it's almost a separate fanbase. and because jkr hasn't tried to capitalize on the marauders' story line (yet), she isn't necessarily gaining much from the fandom. (in fact, i feel like you could argue that marauders fans are some of her most outspoken opponents.)

going back to the original ask, i don't know what caused you to be anti-HP (whether it's because of jkr or the writing of the series or the fandom or anything else) so this is not meant to be me antagonizing you or anything. art and literature is all subjective, so you have every right to dislike the series.

this is just a general warning for everyone about the inherent complexity of literature and a little info dump on the toxic nature of modern cancel culture because it's something i'm very passionate about.

God/Titan/Dark!Percy being so popular is genuinely so maddening.Percy's spent the whole franchise and even before it hating authority figures because he grew up in it and BEFORE it knowing first-hand how abusive and corrupted they are and he was already a bully beater for a long while by The Lightning Thief and direct action against Luke's fascist ass was his whole motivation in Pjo and in Hoo he STILL dosen't take the gods shit but dosen't turn evil either because he's not a pussy like he was and he also does things to help fix the system like using his wish to ask the Gods to actually do things for their kids and encouraging the less priviliged myth beings to fight for their rights and better treatment too and he respects women bendlessly and adopted Nico and Hazel as his younger siblings and pseudo-kids because they had no positive living adult figures in their lives and thinks rich things are corny and that hypermasculinity is a burden he dosen't wanna participate in and finds gross and unappealing on other guys and is accidentally autistic-coded on every level and there's way more evidence for that than any male queerness for him and canonically dosen't want to be super powerful and WAS LITERALLY A TEENAGE ANARCHIST

Soooooo much fandom discourse is centered around the fandom not the media itself. But opinions tend to be foisted upon the media itself. A bad shipwar can damage a show's reputation, even if the show has not encouraged it. Memes or adaptations or initial reactions can create warped versions of the characters. Except these warped versions then impact how the actual character is perceived. Bad media literacy can lead to people claiming a work supports the actions of someone vile, even if the work opposes it. Certain fan theories or art designs can gain a life of their own, only for fans to be let down by the actual result, even though no promises were made. Fan favorite characters can create feelings of anger that something 'wasn't addressed' even if it was superfluous. An popular show can create resentment and toxic behavior surrounding itself, even if the show itself is great. Creators get dragged into the fray, and because they are actually creating and not spending time learning the intricacies of the fandom they inevitably offend someone.

In conclusion Fandom Toxicity is going to be present no matter how perfect the work of fiction is. Because it is nearly always the fans causing problems and projecting it, not the art itself.
