shipper discourse as a mere concept sounded so fxcking ridiculous to me that I vowed to stay far away from that burning landfill way before I started getting into ships myself. I'm quite proud how much I was able to keep this promise to myself, even though I definitely do have some lingering Chronically Online™️ tendencies. but antis annoyed me enough at this point that I need to rant just this once about them.

sometimes I go on Pinterest to add some fanart to my Fleet, and stumble upon comment sections full of people genuinely losing their collective minds over

a.) ships as a concept — this one is super funny, there's always that one rando who goes "but I thought X is married/they hate each other/Y is straight?!" and then there's a bunch of people politely explaining what ships are and how they work

b.) problematic ships — this one's just fxcking exhausting

how the fxck did we get here, where people genuinely judge each other's character based on which fictional people they ship with each other?! not only that, but they seem to be completely invested in this moral crusade, as if it matters?! my dudes it's not real?!?!

like, there's capitalism and war out there, there's a million different problematic people irl, and this is the hill you wish to die on?!

are you guys that bored? is your life so perfect and without sin you feel the need to harass people over the pettiest bs imaginable? why do you want to be angry? isn't it exhausting? how do you have this much energy to waste?

you can just scroll past, it's so easy! you can just go "ew" and then fxcking leave, I do it all the time, it works!

— minors. teenagers as a concept no longer exist, all people under 18 are dumbdumb babies, and any suggestion that they might just have an interest in sex is pedophilia. aging them up is clearly just an excuse so you can imagine them fxck, nevermind the fact that aging is a thing that actually happens to people. (Drarry, TomArry, JayTim, Scorbus, Blackice)

— pseudoincest. it's kinda in the name, it's not actually incest, but because it's incest adjacent, they treat it as if it were the same. (JayDick, JayTim)(Scamandercest is not pseudo, you can take me to hel now, or something)

— bad people. what is this, Hayes Code 2.0, Electric Boogalo?! sorry to tell you that authors aren't obligated to be the hand of the gods punishing morally corrupt characters for their sins. I suggest sticking to fairytales if that bothers you. (KylUx, Hannigram, Drarry, BlackIce)

I’m going to be harsh here: If you are calling someone a nazi or nazi apologist purely on the basis that they ship something or like a fictional character you are being a piece of shit. You are trivializing words and making it harder for actual accusations of nazism to be taken seriously, you are harming strangers you know nothing about.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but to this day I’m convinced that the Kylx fandom’s contempt and mockery of Reylos is just “hating on the female character in the way of the ship” directed elsewhere. The ST fandom is so knee-deep in purity politics that they probably wouldn’t be able to bash Rey as some of them seem to want (see: post-TLJ “Rey is a traitor/bitch” comments) and retain their woke social clout, so they turn that ire towards Reylos for being icky-bad shippers, and accomplish the same thing

It’s true and you should say it. 

I mean. Generalizing is always bad, but what you describe is certainly a factor, as it always is in heavily popular slash ships, and k/h makes no exception. It’s just INCREDIBLY convenient to them that the discourse is providing a perfectly woke reason to bash shippers of the loathed het ship that gets in the way of their otp and has infinitely more chances to be canon. This way they can get the pesky female character out of the way while acting like they’re doing HER a huge favor and pursuing some great feminist agenda or whatever.

This is why the hypocrisy in k*yluxers annoys me so much, and tbh at this point I have trouble trusting anyone who ships Kylo with other characters (including self-inserts or OCs) but hates Reylo. And let me clarify what i mean with hating Reylo: being personally uninterested in Reylo as a ship or concept but open to its possibility in canon and willing to discuss Rey’s influence on him in a canon context is, of course, entirely fine. But full-on hating Reylo and its shippers, calling it abuse and whatnot, antagonizing and gatekeeping Reylo shippers, sidelining or downright denying Rey’s role in Kylo’s arc, stealing stuff from her shared arc with Kylo like the Force Bond and giving it to H/ux or Self Insert, saying shit like “she deserves better”, or “protect her”, or “she shouldn’t be forced to be involved with Kylo”, all the while you’re unapologetically writing and reading smut of k*lux, or Kylo x reader or Kylo x OC? It’s a huge red flag to me. I mean, what is Rey lacking that H/ux or Self Insert have, exactly? (aside from a dick for the former, and being a female character that you don’t perceive as a rival for the latter, because she’s nothing but a projection of yourself with zero flaws and a nondescript personality?)

AGAIN, FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK: just liking K/H more, or being more comfortable writing your own OC rather than Rey because you are not sure you’re “getting” her or you have trouble connecting with her pov or whatever, with no bad feelings and no bad discourse attached, is NOT WRONG and if that’s your case then this post isn’t talking about you. Doing all the above but being loud and obnoxious about your dislike for Reylo, and coming up with “reasons” why shipping K/H or Kylo/Self Insert is Morally Better and Wholesome than shipping Reylo? That’s hugely hypocritical and maybe it’s time to examine critically why the thought of Kylo being with Rey, the actual female protagonist of the sequel trilogy with her specific set of qualities and flaws, has you frothing at the mouth so much, outside of the usual convenient reasons provided by anti discourse.

Rant about “Kylo Ren”. Sorry in advance.

You know the sad part about the casual fans who hate Kylo Ren and think “that’s the normal and sensible thing to do”?

You could clearly see them being emotionally manipulated during 2016 and 2017, and it may sound dramatic, but it kinda breaks my heart thinking about it now.

After the movie first released, there were so many posts and jokes about the hero trio “dragging Ben’s ass back to the light”, how his mother was gonna give him the “force chancla” how uncle Chewie would try to awkwardly forgive him and share Han stuff with him (and the headcanon that he can speak Shyriiwook) how he was an angsty emo youngster angry with the world!

Those were great! I love seeing them now, every once in a while! He was treated like another main character, like a regular villain, and made fun of because of how bad he is at being bad! And it was SO FUN! This new dynamic was what inmersed me in Star Wars again!

But then, posts like “why stan a fascist when Finn is right there?” started to pop up on casual fan’s blogs.

For me, not shipping FinnRey has nothing to do with race and everything to do with wanting people to have family. Family is such a stressed theme in Star Wars and here we have two beautiful people who don't have that family connection like the others.

I see FinnRey, I think it's a good ship, but to me I still ship Finn with Poe or Rose over Rey. I'm sorry that there have been Reylo shippers who have been ugly about the ship, and unfortunately there is nothing I can do about their behavior. But to label everyone with the same tag makes it so no one can hold discussions with one another. I'd love to talk to ReyRose/FinnRey/Kylux/StormPilot/FinnRose/etc. shippers about Star Wars and their ships but it's impossible to open any dialogue if everyone is hostile about it.

I keep seeing people claiming that not shipping Finn and Rey together makes you racist, someone who endorses abuse, etc. but can I be real with you for a moment?

I really want Finn and Rey to be the siblings that neither one of them had the chance to have.

I don’t think that’s a wrong thing to want. I get there is hype over FinnRey, and I see where you’d see the ship, but I honestly just want them to have that family connection, to be able to claim they have a family they can come back to. And, again if I am being honest, I ship StormPilot over FinnRey because of the dynamics that I see between Finn and Poe (this is in no way discrediting Rose, I love her to bits). I can appreciate people’s ships, like the fan art, but still ship what I ship, and there is nothing wrong with that.
