What if, instead of sparkling, when a vampire steps into the sun they turn ugly and horrifying? Like, the sunlight lifts the veil of otherworldly beauty to reveal the demon lurking underneath. Essentially, they turn into Nosferatu is what I'm getting at.
I remember reading a fic with a premise similar to this a long while ago, but I cannot recall the name of it.
Do you think anything would change in the series if that was the case? If Bella saw Edward turn into a actual monster in the sunlight, would that break the glamour of dating a vampire, or is she in too deep for it to matter?
You are deeply funny, anon, that's what you are.
As for the fic, my best guess is you're referencing Be Careful What You Wish For by The_Necroposter, as upon turning into a vampire Bella sees vampires as horrifically ugly creatures.
But back to your question.
Bella, the Meadow, and "Oh no"
Everything up until this point is exactly the same. Edward already believes he's the most hideous looking creature on the planet, Bella already firmly disagrees.
When Bella asks Edward if he burns in sunlight, if this is always the reason he's missing on sunny days, Edward gives a very similar answer to canon of "... It's not harmful but it would... uh... be distracting"
Because he doesn't want to tell her "acutally, I start looking very corpselike and it's deeply gross". Edward at this stage is at the "ah ha ha ha, if I was a good person I would make sure Bella runs away from me and never returns... but I don't want her to do that."
So, because of that, Bella still gets invited to the meadow, as for Edward this is a) him giving in and admitting he has a thing with Bella and that they'll be alone together and now she knows he's a monster b) an opportunity to scare her off which is what he would do if he was a decent person. (And he does try this canonically, that was what all the "I'M A MONSTER", tearing trees out and running around like a terrifying lunatic was about, it was just he was so hot and anguished that Bella thought it was great).
"Bella's going to see this and she's going to realize I am bad news" Edward says to himself, and while he's very sad about this... it's for the best and will be good for Bella over all EvEn ThOUgh ShE'll MaRRy MikE nEwTon!
So, Edward is prepared, but he must do it.
Bella is not prepared.
Edward did tell her he's especially hideous in the sunlight, that it will show her how truly monstrous he really is, but she doesn't believe him. Edward, after all, has already been talking about his monstrous appearance and how everyone fears him because they have an animal instinct.
Bella's not like the other girls.
Besides, she's in love with Edward even though he's a vampire. She knows he's a vampire. If he's a vampire in the sunlight or if he murders her, then Bella's love is not shallow enough that she'll be disssuaded by that. THIS IS TRUE LOVE, PEOPLE.
Also, how could beautiful Edward ever, in any situation, be ugly? He's so beautiful it's unreal, this is made up.
So, Bella sits there and watches as he steps into the sun--
OH GOD, IT'S A WRETCHED CORPSE GARGOYLE IN A BLOUSE.
Bella--
Privately realizes that this is worse than she ever expected. He really did become horrifically, awfully, terrible and even Bella (who thought she had the funny 'scared of vampires' switch turned off in her brain) isn't digging this.
This is...
Bad.
But... shouldn't Bella be able to see past this? She's in love with Edward, she loves him for who he is, not how he looks in the sunlight. And he's perfectly beautiful the rest of the time, god, she'd be such a shallow monster if she loved him any less for this thing he can't help.
Bella tells him she doesn't care what he looks like. Now, she can't lie and admit it's not... terrible, but it's not who Edward is. Stepping into the sunlight and looking like a demon is not a remark on his character in any way, it's just what vampirism does.
This reflects nothing on Edward.
Edward can't believe that Bella is this good, this selfless. She's unreal.
Rather than cuddle in the meadow, they go back to cuddle in the house.
TL;DR
In the series, whenever people bring up the many cons of being a vampire to Bella, they'll include "you'll look ugly as shit in the sunlight" and Bella insists she doesn't care because she's in it for Edward.

EVERYTHING we love about bella is stripped away by Edward and vampirism. Her clumsiness, her blush, her brown eyes. The way she loves the sun and Arizona. She loved to cook and now she will never eat again. She hated the cold and now she is cold stone. Edward discards her truck and replaces it with a brand new Mercedes’ she didn’t even like. Which always felt like symbolism to me. Some may see it as an upgrade, as a nice gift… but Bella never wanted it. Think of how EXCITED she was to get that truck and how uncomfortable she was then with the Mercedes. If Bella wanted an upgrade, SHE SHOULDVE PICKED THE CAR. But no.. Edward literally just DISCARDED IT. Bella never liked flashy things or parties but now she’s subjected to that forever.
I think it’s fucking insane that people will say theyre Team Edward cause they’re not “anti-choice.” What did y’all read bc….. what. Just because Bella chooses to be a vampire? To die? She was OBSESSED with the easy way out. She was obsessed with Edward cause they were trauma bonded and she had such horrific self esteem. Just cause Bella chose to be a vampire doesn’t make it a good thing. It is a tragedy and always will be to me. Unless you never gave a fuck about her as a human I suppose. 😗✌️ Bella is an unreliable narrator and was under vampire thrall. Bella was severely traumatized by Edward and felt worthless as a human. Bella had a chance to grow with Jacob and she WOULD HAVE. But she would have PTSD that she could work through. You may be like “she would’ve never gotten over edward.” Yeah she would’ve and she would’ve realized that him haunting her was all Stockholm syndrome.
I’m not “anti choice” for acknowledging Bella’s choice was the wrong one. ExB’s relationship ruined lives, killed people, put the wolfpack through literal HELL and eventually enslaved the wolfpack to them. All for “love” LMAO! It wasn’t love, it was obsession, bloodlust, trauma bonding, low self worth, co dependency.
Anyway. I started a Breaking Dawn rewrite fic where Bella realizes all this shit and heals.

crazy how Smeyer’s mormon ass got away w writing a whole series of novels packed full of anti native racism and that the tribe she portrayed in her books are a real fucking tribe and that she tried to make the fanbase view the native characters as evil and dangerous and bad when the Cullens are literally rich, white, immortal and could fucking live anywhere on planet earth (including underwater cuz they don’t fucking BREATHE) yet they stay RIGHT next to the tribe which FORCES THE NATIVE BOYS TO SHAPESHIFT AGAINST THEIR WILL
Tumblr media
she deadass wrote Edward casually thinking about committing native genocide and everyone saw that and was like “No biggie” and it’s literally a real fucking tribe she’s writing about… HELLO???

Team Jacob thoughts:
What pisses me off about Bella is she talks about the Cullens being this perfect found family she always wanted(when they're not) when she already had a potential found family she never saw or appreciated in Charlie and Jacob and his family and her friends Jessica and Angela who tried to connect with her. And the tribe. Like she hand a family right there growing up with her every time she visited every summer. And she never saw it. The Cullens are not a family. They're cold ghosts that Carlisle is desperately trying to keep together with his very cruel choices. There's no way your telling me that Emmett and Rosalie would not bail on them the second there was a chance they can be human again and grow old together and have babies. Esme is a suicidal stepford wife trying to mother ghosts that are too old to mother. Edward just wants to die but Carsile won't let him. And Alice and Jasper are a disaster security risk waiting to happen. One is insane spoiled brat and the other is a Confederate soldier that can easily kill anyone without trying. They are not a family. And Bella got shackled to that and dragged Jacob down with her.
(Don't like don't read. Post hate and I'll block you!)

Would Edward be jealous if he knew that Bella thought Carlisle and Rosalie were hot hot hot?
It's factually correct they are hot hot hot, I imagine he'd nod approvingly to the Carlisle bit and disapprovingly to the Rosalie bit. She is hot, that is a fact, it's also the problem with her. This is the man who suggested Jacob get Bella pregnant since she wants a child so badly, jealousy is not on Edward's radar in any conventional way.
The most adverse reaction I can imagine is an angsty "Yes, we are all beautiful in this family... BECAUSE WE ARE MONSTERS".

So my sister found book reports I wrote in middle/high school and it brought up a number of things I hate about Twilight (yet I did enjoy the books to an extent). Shes not happy and I'm reminded why I so not engage with Team Edward Twihards.
Rant incoming - also, this is about the BOOKS, not the movies
Middle school me knew there was something wrong with Bella and Edward's relationship. The "eternal seventeen" view my friends had (and still have) didn't hold water to me because I was the same middle schooler reading a whole bunch of books about vampires, werewolves, fae, and mythology. In my report on the first book, I said that there's no such thing as an immature immortal character - they'd be dead if they were truly immature.
Because seriously, Bella is a teenager with no real world experience compared to Edward. I said "think of it like a thirteen year old girl dating a eighteen year old boy." Back then, I pretty much wrote about grooming without fully understanding it in depth (I got sent to the counselor and ended up learning more). Edward himself acknowledges the power imbalance of their relationship, he does incredibly disgusting things that are NOT romantic, and reading Midnight Sun years later only validated my old views.
Jacob is also a teenager with no experience. Setting him up as some type of romantic rival to Edward doesn't acknowledge the MAJOR issue of JACOB BEING AN ACTUAL TEENAGE CHILD! A lot of my very rantish book report on that aspect was detailing how Jacob is just as much a victim of the story as Bella if not worse. He's written as a sweet and caring boy trying to do right by his family and friends, gets abruptly turned into an incel because Meyer realized she made Jacob too perfect for Bella, and then enslaved for the rest of his life AT RHE AGE OF SIXTEEN. He did not deserve any of what happened and it happens because Meyer made him, a CHILD, Edward's rival.
Because, YES, Jacob IS the superior match for Bella. Not simply because she canonically calls him her sun, but because HE'S AN AGE APPROPRIATE MATCH. Nevermind that, canonically, Bella acknowledges that she IS in love with Jacob and if, not for Edward the manipulator being her drug of choice, they WOULD be together.
She has a whole "what if I married Jacob" sequence where she had a happy and healthy relationship and LIVED, no amount of gaslighting could change my opinion when I wrote "this is like that old movie that glorified domestic abuse - Edward is constantly slapping Bella and he is her true cause of her death, but 'love in adversity' is the lesson we're meant to take from it."
There's also a paper I wrote using Twilight to discuss racism and PDF-philia in literature for my AP Lit class. And it holds up! Meyer legit had Quil imprint on a TWO YEAR OLD, Jacob on an infant (with the kind of an adult which adds another layer of horror and abuse to Jacob's treatment), made the shifters all angry hotheads who harm the people around them, has them referred to as dogs and mutts by the very White elitist Cullens, and gives all of them awful endings. She legit made it canonical that the shifters have to cut their hair, something that even a cursory amount of research would tell you that is a cultural no-no.
Meyers, and the fandom, give Edward so much grace for his predatory, entitled, and petty behavior and simultaneously drag Jacob for his very justifiable hatred of the Cullens and desperation to get Bella away from them. The Cullens legit repeat history by invading native land and despite KNOWING that their proximity is causing them to shift and result in deaths, THEY DONT CARE (they did it TWICE, by the way). They don't care about Bella either, they constantly put her in danger and treat her like an object, why WOULDN'T Jacob try to get her away from them?
And Bella defending the Cullens, but not ONCE defending Jacob or the wolves from the Cullens and the disgusting things they said THAT WEREN'T TRUE.
And the two page rant I wrote about Jacob imprinting on Renasty (that is legit what I kept calling her) holds up so much that my sister is re-reading the series right now. Jacob is legitimately terrified of imprinting and having what little control he has left taken from him. And when it happens, it is legit HORRIFYING. He's untethered from everything that made him an individual, his life becomes all about Renasty
I don't hate Twilight, mainly because it was part of my formative years. But I DO kinda hate Meyers for the shit she wrote and I hate a chunk of the fandom who share her mindset. My sister might join those ranks lmao.

Amazing that smeyers wrote a goddamn psychological horror novel on accident
Twilight read as intended: terrible, pathetic attempt of a love story
Twilight read as psychological horror: fascinating, edge of your seat.
Down to how Edward talks about Bella. It's all about her blood and her body and the fact that ultimately he wants to fucking drink all her blood. Her being "innocent and pure" is even about her blood (esp if you've read midnight sun) and he isn't truly in love with her.
It's infatuation, on both sides, except Edward's 109 years old and Bella is a teenager. He manipulates, gaslights, controls and straight up abuses her and smyers literally writes it like it's this epic romance with not a hint of irony.
And then she manages to write about Jacob being Bella's sun. How being near him she feels lighter. How everything clicks into place and that he makes her feel good and happy.
When you read new moon, to me it feels very clear that Bella's relationship with Jacob is much more natural and authentic than what she has with Edward. It's built up over time and it's based on friendship.
What Jacob does when he kisses Bella is obviously not cool, but let's not pretend that there wasn't desperation in the act because he knows she's planning on becoming a vampire. He's watching his best friend/girl he loves throw away her whole future over a vampire she's known for less than a year. I imagine that from the outside Jacob and Charlie can see that Bella is not rational about edward, that something's not right.
(And we all know that smyers "ruined" Jacobs characterization because people liked him so much and she was all about team Edward. you know because he was white, let's be real she's a racist)
When Bella visits her mom, even she notices that things are off. She says that they're too intense about each other...like magnets. Because Edward is obsessed and infatuated with her because she's his singer and for the fact that he can't read her mind. He calls her plain several times in Midnight Sun. He's hardly attracted to her at all in fact (or any women tbh).
Bella calls it being dazzled in the books, but it's an enthrallment and we see it over and over when they get humans to do whatever they want. Edward even tells Bella that everything about vampires is designed to lure humans in, and he of course uses that to his advantage.
Bella never stood a fucking chance. She deserves better. Charlie deserved better. And a controversial opinion I fear but, Jacob Black deserved better.
The Cullens are so freaking scary, they held Bella hostage casually. They literally let Edward stalk and harass Bella, like you're telling me they didn't know he was sneaking into her window or breaking her truck. Alice could see the future, and they totally enabled Edward's behavior. In fact I'd say Alice is almost as bad as Edward. They both constantly deny Bella autonomy.
Is it supposed to be romantic that edward treats her like a child? That he controls her? No it's a fucking horror story.

Okay, as someone who is reading Twilight for the first time, I gotta say Bella did Jacob so dirty. She knew she was flirting with Jacob the first time she met him. She TRIED to make him like her. After already being interested in Edward. She had no intention of doing anything with him. She wanted to know more about Edward and manipulated Jacob into telling her the stories.
In the movie, it was way less clear. She seemed to have already had an ongoing friendship with him. In the book, she was acquainted with his older sisters. And even then, she makes a point of saying they were all too shy to be actual friends.
I haven't gotten too far in the series, but just knowing this kid is fifteen changes my perspective. This kid was thrown into a war he didn't want for a girl who didn't want him.

okay so everything about twilight is the same, except bella is a fantastic piano player. she is wayyy better than edward. debussy who? how does this change things? how does edward feel that a hamburger is better than him at piano? PIANO IS SUPPOSED TO BE HIS THING DAMNIT!!
Oh, anon, I love your faith.
Nothing changes because of two things.
Bella and Her Self-Esteem
Bella's convinced she's an average piano player at best. She knows enough to admit she's okay, she can play when other people have no idea how to play at all, but she wouldn't call herself 'good'. There are so many people who are so much more talented and wonderful and amazing than her.
Bella, meanwhile, has to actually sit down and do things like practice because sometimes concertos are really hard.
I imagine she's also morbidly embarrassed because while it's cool to play casually and all that, she's maybe a little too into this and OH GOD, SHE'S A FREAK.
And maybe if she was really really good, it'd be impressive and wonderful, but since she's so into it but just okay, it's just weird.
Edward and His Ego
Edward is absolutely convinced he is better than Bella. Oh, he hears her play and she's good, for a human, but he can play faster by nature, has a greater handspan than her, and will just be able to play things she physically can't.
Of course, her playing is wonderful (for a human) and he loves it because it is as human and imperfect and soulful as she is, but he's better.
He also composes, and Bella certainly doesn't do that.
Helping this is Bella insisting he is better, wow he's so amazing, and she could never do what he does and looks so beautiful doing it. And the composing? Wow.

edward almost never did anything for bella that she would actually like
jake handmade a bracelet for her, edward gave her expensive gifts that made her uncomfortable (including the diamond heart he put ON that bracelet… despicable)
jake helped her fix up the old bikes and only stopped her from trying them out when she went too fast and got hurt, edward bought her a missile proof car bc he has no trust in her (even as a practically invincible vampire!!)
edward wrote her one song at the beginning and then became The World’s Worst Gift Giver while KNOWING what she didn’t like and doing those things anyway… like where is the so-called “love” he’s supposed to have for her all I see is him trying to control her
TELL THEM! 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️😋✌️

“Twilight is about female voyeuristic self-love” no actually, Twilight is about the author’s Mormonism
It has an extremely glaring pro life plotline, it’s classist, it’s racist, it’s anti sex before marriage so much so that Edward doesn’t even open mouth kiss Bella the entire time they date, and the idea of marriage and having a baby at 18 years old is depicted as the ultimate reward and happily ever after for the female MC lol

…in less than 10 fucking minutes.
Bella and Jacob had no other interaction between these two scenes, by the way. There was nothing that happened during Bella’s trip to Italy that would make her change her opinion about him so drastically.
Nope. It was just Grandpa Edward getting mixed up in teenagers’ business.
But in all seriousness, it is his fault. Bella fully trusted Jacob all of her life. And I mean, why would she not? He’s been protecting her since the get-go while Edward decided to leave her all alone and exposed. At first, Bella is convinced that Jacob would never harm her and she tells him that she’s always going to remind him that he’s not that type of guy. But the moment Smellward gets back, she’s suddenly all like “Eddie pwease, is that person going to hurt poor little me? No? Can you make sure? 🥺”. Like, I know this is obviously the writers’ fault, but girl maybe you’re worrying about the wrong person? Your prince charming over there spends every minute of his undead life trying to prevent himself from turning your body into a raisin.
And it’s even worse when you get to that part in the book because she never even says this to Jacob. Instead, we get this heart breaking scene:
Tumblr media
Wow. Like, all she can think about is Jacob and how she wants to go and touch him and be close to him and keep him happy with her, even as her friend. Which ok, a bit selfish on Bella’s part, but Jacob is her choice. Her human, sane part chose him of its own free will, whereas the rest of her simply can’t resist Edward and everything his world offers. Her soul is connected with Jacob’s. And speaking of selfishness, Edward doesn’t even want her to be part of his world, but he wants her to be part of Jacob’s even less. It’s like he changes his mind about keeping Bella with him forever out of pure spite. I fully believe that if Alice was able to see the wolves in her visions and Edward saw Bella coming closer with Jacob and eventually marrying him as she briefly dreamed of, his wrinkly ass would have never left Forks in the first place.
Like, it might just be me, but physically restraining Bella from getting close to someone she loves (whatever the way, shape or form of that love may be) out of jealousy is so insane. He’s too old to be acting like that. What, Jacob getting upset about Bella practically ceasing to exist as her current self is just too much for Edward? Has this man forgotten that he spent the biggest part of Midnight Sun fantasising about how he’d kill Bella and her entire classroom and that he didn’t do it solely to prove to himself that he’s not that kind of monster but he still fucking craves murdering her? Is he going senile?
