Hello secret Santa! No worries, I'm forgetful with my stuff too. Doctor Who. Have you seen the newest episodes? They've been sublime. Anyway, favorite Doctor. My first Doctor was 4. My favorite Doctor is 8 followed closely by 12. Favorite companions. Always Sarah Jane. Because she's timeless and should be a Time Lord in her own right. In modern, I would say Amy and Rory. Bill Potts. And if River counts (which she should) her as well. As for villains, I don't really have one but I would say Missy. Only because I miss the Rani and Missy is the closest the new series has gotten. My extremely unpopular opinion is always the relationship between Samantha Jones and 8 in the old Big finish books. Not very many people know about them but, God! I loved Sam so much and I hate that everyone glosses over her as one of 8's companions. (I know the later the Big Finish book series went on the more convoluted it got but no more convoluted than the series so...)

hey! if you are going to the dallas or woodlands, tx show - listen up!

I don’t fault fall out boy (or their managers) for this but I can’t help but emphasize how stupid it is to book an outdoor show in texas for the end of june!! people outside of texas truly don’t understand how fucking hot it gets this time of year — and unless you experience it for yourself, you won’t get it.

temperatures right now are above 100 degrees Fahrenheit and "feel" much hotter than that due to humidity and UV index.

if you are going to the woodland or dallas show this week, please, please be careful!!!

as a lifelong texan who has endured this hellish heat for my whole life, here are some very important tips for surviving the summer weather (& not passing out):

be sure to hydrate days before the event (starting tonight!) drink mostly water, & if you have them, add those little hydration iv packets as well!

I would highly, highly recommend that you don’t drink alcohol at the event. alcohol is a diuretic and will dehydrate you!!! I would really recommend only drinking water (no diet coke, soda, or other beverages with caffeine, this is a diuretic too!)

check if your venue allows you to bring food & drink (I have heard the dos equis pavilion is allowing snacks! & outside water) & if they do — BRING THEM

eat before the show!! a full meal, not just nibbles of food. eat something rich in all major food groups: carbs, proteins and fats! (most people I have encountered pass out from a mixture of not eating & dehydration)

be conscious of your clothing — wear light colored, breathable fabric like cotton or linen (it’s going to be too fucking hot to make a fashion statement. TRUST ME!)

get to the venue later than you normally would. people in GA, I really really would advise against spending all afternoon in the sun, camping out. if you want to wait in the parking lot, do so in the comfort of your air conditioned car!! (i promise you, getting barricade at a fall out boy show is not worth passing out)

wear a hat!! & bring sunnies (sunglasses) if you are going to be outside before the sun sets

this part of texas DOES NOT cool down at night, so be prepared!!

dicks sporting goods & five below sell those cooling towels for under five bucks, please get one!!

most importantly, listen to your body!!! if you are feeling woozy, ill, lightheaded, nauseous or otherwise NOT RIGHT -- sit down, get help from staff, and get out of the heat!!!!

I’m not kidding when I say that it’s dangerous this time of year to be somewhere outdoors without air conditioning. we, texans, don’t go outside in the summer for a reason!!

From the ask game, Pain: What’s the worst pain your OC has ever felt? Do they have a high pain tolerance?

Quinn sits, back upright and elbow draped across the arm of the couch, with a notebook in their lap. They wear a gentle smile that doesn't look truly warm, and their eyes keep flitting down to their notes as they write sporadically.

It feels like there are worms under his skin. Lux shifts, heels digging into the carpet below, fingers fiddling with the curls that don't want to stay tucked behind his ear.

"Alright. That's great. Thank you, Lux." The pen scribbles more, then taps softly against the paper. Brown eyes find blue again and keep Lux locked in a painfully sympathetic - or apparently sympathetic - staredown. "And what would you say is the worst pain you've been in?"

The hairs on the backs of his arms stand on end. Lux's jaw sets itself and he manually relaxes it before it can be seen as a sign of anger. He is just tense, just uncomfortable. "What - um, I... I don't, I don't... do you really n-need me to... need me to pick?"

A slow, apologetic nod. Their pen is tapping almost inaudibly. "Do you want me to hold your hand?"

It sounds like an offer from a doctor or a lawyer. An offer that might help, but not because it comes from someone who really cares for him personally. It's professional, seeking an end goal of getting those answers to come out. Lux almost shakes his head no with a quick, earnest apology, but then Quinn is setting aside their notebook and hands are scooping up his.

Lux's face twists with anxiety and unease. It feels like Quinn is going to do something with his hands, going to try to press in on them or pull them. He looks down reflexively and feels an instant pang of guilt - Quinn's hands are not flexing to do something to his, they are just twisted. They have crooked fingers that look stiff and unwilling to straighten out. Thick, symmetrical scars on either palm speak to some kind of impalement, and faint spasms whisper of pain that never goes away even though any breaks and cuts have already healed.

The sight surprises him enough that his mouth opens, and an answer awkwardly tumbles out before he even decides what he might want to say. "Um, I, I think, I think, there were some bad ones - bad, um, times, bad pain, when - when I was a kid, but... that was like, that was, maybe it was so bad because it startled me? Scared me, I couldn't, I couldn't do an-nything to... um, but, the worst pain? The most..." A shaky breath. Lux closes his eyes to stop staring at Quinn's confusing hands, and to stop feeling their gaze that reads every twitch of his expression. They got closer to him to hold his hands, and it feels like the microscope above him just got tuned to a stronger magnification.

"I think... it's kind of a, a basic answer, but. My sh-shoulders. I, I, I can't... handle them being touched, and - they get, they got broken, a lot." Quinn's fingers flex, just barely squeezing his. The holding of his hands felt like being exploited, but that squeeze... it seems like it hurts them as much as it makes him uncomfortable to be manipulated. Lux's eyes peek open just to see that yes, their expression is pinched with pain. Just for a half-second until they realize he can see, and then they look neutral and sympathetic again.

"And - and it's wrong, it's not true, because they've been crunched up and, and twisted and - you know, everything, but - but sometimes when I, I, I, when I, when I wake up, it's - they hurt so much, I just..."

Quinn nods slowly, eyes locked on him like he is speaking a truth that they've never heard put so well. Lux can't figure out if they really understand, or if acting like they do is the best way to make him talk.

He continues, voice soft and somber. "...I just cry, f-for a couple hours, and stay in bed, and... and it's worse than, than when they got broken, 'cause... back then, I was, like... it was tough, it was brave, to get through it. But, but, in my room, in - my house..." For just a moment, bitterness makes its way into his tone. It's not fair that he has to hurt when he's safe out here, when he's in his own home. "It just... I can't. I can't handle it."

Quinn hums, eyes lowered to somewhere around his chest. Lux thinks they might be giving him a break from being watched. "It's worse than the knife? The whip, fire, being beaten? It's worse than a broken bone, than almost dying?"

They sound gently incredulous. But Lux knows, he knows from the misshapen hands cupping his. Quinn understands pain that just won't leave, every day, forever. "I think... I think, um... I mi-ight be wrong. But that's how it feels."

Top 5 Arthur episodes?

D.W. Goes to Washington: It's a very close race between this one and #2, but I gave the edge to this one because almost every line here is classic. It's full of hilarious Imagine Spots and great D.W. zingers.

The Rat Who Came to Dinner: Another episode that's full of great jokes. The dynamic between Ratburn and Arthur's family is comedy gold.

The Contest: The pastiches of different animation styles alone puts this one in the top five, but it's also in service of some wonderfully absurd mini-stories with classic jokes. ("My brain was on cruise control" is the Arthur quote that gets the most use in daily life).

Buster Hits the Books: The pastiches of the different books are hilarious.

Arthur's Almost Boring Day: I had a very tough time choosing the fifth episode. I went with this one because the fighting between Arthur and D.W. reaches a hilarious fever pitch that goes beyond any other episode.

i never know what to say whenever someone who’s never pursued learning a language asks me “where are you in [language]”

how am i meant to express how far i am when they have no reference points but refuse to accept “im in year 2 of the language” as an answer. what answer do u want. i beg of u.

like, there’s general markers such as saying “i’m getting into more complex grammatical structures with compound sentences” but the person i’m speaking to has no idea what that means for progress

i then get asked if i would be able to “talk to them”

yes?? if they used words i know, which are simple, but still enough for a complete conversation, but not fluent

just ask me if I’m fluent yet if the deepest you’ve thought about language learning is “can speak to a native speaker or not”

Also, just as an overall observation, I really can't help but wonder how much better things might be if we actually tried to teach kids about the complexities of the world, rather than "Protecting Them."
