April 9, 2024: Physical Therapy, Franny Choi
Physical Therapy Franny Choi   Ask, first, what your smallest body parts require to sing again: coconut oil for your hair’s dry ends, camphor for the earlobes, rosehip kneaded into fingertips with fingertips. Grapeseed will feed most hungers of the skin. But if even your bones cry January, dip your sharpest knife in a jar of raw honey. Lather it on your thighs, making circles, making certain not to confuse this ache for that other, the one that keeps pulling you to the earth, the one question you still can’t say out loud. Recite instead the names of trees: sumac, sweet birch, slippery elm. Take your palm to the wild place under your chin and count: vein, artery, chokecherry, weeping willow, until your xacto knife pulse slows, holds. Let your mouth fill with gold, almonds, zinneas. Then: soften.

Picasso Masterpiece 'Femme à la montre' Sells for $139 Million at Auction
A Picasso masterpiece entitled “Femme à la montre” fetched more than $139 million on Wednesday, becoming the second most valuable work by the artist ever sold at auction.
The 1932 oil painting took center-stage at a two-day event at Sotheby’s in New York, at the sale of late philanthropist Emily Fisher Landau’s private collection.
The piece, which measures 51¼ x 38 inches (130 x 96.5 centimeters), depicts Picasso’s lover and “golden muse” Marie-Thérèse Walter, who featured in many of his portraits.
According to the auction house, the portrait is from one of the most prolific years of the Spanish artist’s career, which was the subject of an entire exhibition organized by the Musée Picasso in Paris and London’s Tate Modern in 2018.
In a statement announcing the sale in September, Julian Dawes, Sotheby’s head of Impressionist & Modern Art for the Americas, said: “Picasso’s ‘Femme à la Montre’ is a masterpiece by every measure. Painted in 1932 — Picasso’s ‘annus mirabilis’ — it is full of joyful, passionate abandon yet at the same time it is utterly considered and resolved. Its bold primary colors sing from the five-foot-tall-canvas.”
Picasso first met Walter in Paris in 1927 when she was 17 years old and he was still married to his first wife, Olga Khokhlova, a Russian-Ukrainian ballet dancer. Walter would become the inspiration for some of his most sought-after canvases, drawings and sculptures.
As time went on, Picasso found it increasingly difficult to hide his feelings for Walter from his work — something that became clear during his first large-scale retrospective and finally ended his marriage.
The artist painted “Femme à la montre” in August 1932, soon after the retrospective at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris ended.
According to Sotheby’s, “the sense of release from keeping secrets about his affair seem to have spilled out onto this extraordinary canvas, in which he gives full painterly rein to new-found freedoms, drenching the painting in strong primary colors and beautiful forms, while at the same time paying careful attention to every small detail, creating a composition that is both intensely complex and deeply harmonious.”
Picasso died in 1973, and Walter in 1977.
The painting is one of about 120 from the collection of Fisher Landau, a world renowned contemporary art collector who died earlier this year aged 102, according to The Art Newspaper.
The two-part sale, which concludes Thursday, also includes works by Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, Willem de Kooning and Georgia O’Keeffe. The collection is expected to sell for over $400 million overall. Other big-ticket items auctioned on Wednesday included one of Jasper Johns’ iconic American flag paintings, which went for $41 million, and an Ed Ruscha artwork — an oil painting emblazoned with the word “Boss” — that fetched more than $39.4 million.
Fisher Landau began seriously collecting after receiving an insurance payout following an armed robbery of her jewelry at her New York home in 1969.
In an interview for an exhibition catalog, quoted in the Sotheby’s statement, she said of the episode: “Even though Lloyds of London paid up, there was no way to replace that collection. It was so beautiful. And they got it in one fell swoop…. I was devastated. But I decided that I didn’t want the jewelry any more. I now had seed money for a collection.”
Last year, Picasso’s most curious painting of Walter, in which she appears as a tentacled sea creature, sold for $67.5 million at Sotheby’s in New York.
Picasso’s portraits of Walter have become highly sought-after, with his other 1932 works “Femme assise près d’une fenêtre (Marie-Thérèse),” selling for $103.41 million in 2021, and “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust,” selling for $106.5 million in 2010.
In May 2015, Picasso’s “Les femmes d’Alger (Version “O”) sold at Christie’s in New York for $179.4 million — at that time, the highest price ever paid for a work of art at auction.

Dad's Thai Yellow Curry
A few magic ingredients make my yellow curry better than almost any you find anywhere. I've had thai curry on 3 different continents, including Bangkok thailand, and I've picked up some tricks. This curry recipes and techniques will create a yellow curry that will be as good or better than most restaurants.
Lime leaf. This south asian spice is very hard to find and often only found in good asian markets in port cities
Coconut CREAM. Cream. Cream. Cream. NOT COCNUT MILK. the coconut cream should be thick, almost the consistency of bree.
Fresh bamboo tips (often sold as parboiled) Bamboo shoots are juicy, and sweet, and do not have the fibers that most canned bamboo has.
_FRESH_ Thai basil. Thai basil is sweet, has a _hint_ lif annus. The combo of the lime leaf and thai basil are what give thai curry that distinctive taste and seporates Thai curry from indian or other curries.
Not so much an ingredient but brown peanuts in your oil. In a separate small pan toss a handful of peanuts and enough oil to cover them. adds a wonderful toasted nutty flavor.
Same with chili peppers, those red pinky finger length dried bright red chilis. Toss those into a small pan with a bit of oil and heat them until they start to turn dark. Don’t worry if a couple turn black.
8oz coconut _cream_ (best I’ve found was at QFC. Do not get coconut cream intended for a bar… it is mostly sugar. Or, bigger boxed coconut cream from Hung Phat(your local well stocked asian market), OR coconut cream in a can from your local asian market) Coconut cream should be almost solid. (yeah this is such a big deal I can not tell you)
8oz lime water (slice a half a lime, put it in the water Microwave for 30 seconds)
Optional 8oz coconut milk
1 teaspoon to 2 tablespoons garlic (FRESH)
1 “thumb” fresh ginger pealed chopped (best technique is to use a potato peeler to make very thin slices) (yes this seems like a lot of giger)
Heaping teaspoon Mae Ploy brand curry paste
2 tablespoons sesame oil
2 tablespoons coconut oil
1 teaspoon of sesame oil
1 tablespoons chili oil or roasted chilis (pref roasted chilis)
½ cup roasted peanuts
2 tablespoons peanut oil (brown some peanuts and add canola oil)
2 Kaffir lime leaf (each "leaf" it's actually 2 leaves)(note: don't call it Kaffir anymore.. google it)
Star Annus (3 cloves) (keep whole!)
1 stalk of fresh thai basil (strip the leaves off the stalks should be about 8 leaves)
2 limes
Bamboo Shoots/Sprouts (Fresh from Hung Phat, canned otherwise, ideally “slivers” rather than planks or disks/medallions)
Optional: Pineapple
1/2 cup: Shredded carrot
1 sauce pot
One small pan
Optional: Roast some chilis then add some coconut oil to make chili oil and roasted chilis (for deep smoky flavor, and spice)
Optional: Roast some peanuts then add some canola oil to make roasted peanuts (for deep nutty flavor)
In small pan on high, add some chili or peanut oil warm it
Finely chop the kafire leaf and lightly saute it, this breaks the leaf down and allows the flavor to escape,
Next add the peanuts, be careful peanuts go from uncooked to burnt in a second,
As soon as the peanuts start to change color add the chopped ginger and garlic and
Add the star annus (yes without breaking the shells, it is easier to pick the big shells out later
NOTE: The following instructions are a little messed up and confusing, stay tuned for a rewrite, this should read something like, put the olis you just made into a big pot, put the may ploy curry paste in the oil and sautee the paste until it breaks up and starts to turn a awful looking dark brown, THEN add the coconut cream and all the other stuff, heat for a while until the cocnut cream liquifies and then add some coconut water
Turn this pan off, as it cools down the garlic and ginger and annis and oil should start to mix to make a very smoky pungent oil brew
While Star annis is very woody. and ya don't want bits of it in your curry, once you are all done making the oils put some annis and ginger in the little pan, on medium hi, after about a min add coconut cream and bring to boil, basically making Anniston and ginger tea. Turn the burner off and let that steep for a 3 to 4 min while the curry is breaking down. Then strain the Annis ginger tea into the curry
In the pot bring up to high, add the coconut oil,
When the coconut oil has melted, add the curry paste
Sautee the curry paste until it turns dark color and turns into curry oil.  The curry will go through a phase change (solid to liquid) this will be complete when the curry and oil start to bubble, and turn dark brown, almost looks burnt. It is hard to burn curry paste this way, but it is easy to under cook it. If the curry paste is under cooked the curry will have a “gritty” or “grainy” flavor and texture. The curry past has to completely break down into dark oily goo. Don’t worry if the yellow curry or red or green does not look yellow, red, or green. The color will come back when you add the coconut cream.
When the curry paste has been broken down into oil,
Now add your sauteed lime leaf/garlic/ginger/chili, annus oil to that mix
Stir well, you should have a bit of curry oil at the bottom of your pot, and it should look like a an almost burnt, oily mess with ginger and garlic lumps.
_now_ Add the coconut cream
Stir, and stir, you should start to see the color of the curry emerge in the coconut cream almost immediately.
Squeeze a lime into that,
Bring it up almost to boil,
Add the bamboo shoots
stir
Add the optional pineapple
Stir
Optional, add some shredded carrot
Chop the lime rind into big chunks and throw the chunks into the soup
Again: The “Tricks” to making curry takest fantastic:
Coconut CREAM, (not coconut milk or coconut water)
Sautee the curry paste in oil FIRST
Kaffir lime leaves, sauteed, separately
Pan Roasted peanuts
Pan roasted chilis
Bamboo shoots IN the curry soup
Optional, double everything, and also add some coconut milk/coconut water, lemon grass

“What does ‘rethinking solidarity mean?’. It does not of course mean calling into question the recent magisterium which, on the contrary, is increasingly showing how farsighted and up to date it is. Rather than ‘rethinking’, it seems to me to mean two things: first of all combining the magisterium with social and economic development since it is constant and rapid it reveals ever new aspects. Secondly, “rethinking” means deepening knowledge, reflecting further to enhance all the fruitfulness of a value — solidarity in this case — which draws in depth from the Gospel, that is, from Jesus Christ, and so as such contains an inexhaustible potential.
Unemployment — the lack or loss of work — is a phenomenon that is spreading like an oil slick in vast areas of the west and is alarmingly widening the boundaries of poverty. Moreover there is no worse material poverty, I am keen to stress, than the poverty which prevents people from earning their bread and deprives them of the dignity of work.
Well, this “something wrong” no longer regards only the south of the world but also the entire planet. Hence the need ‘to rethink solidarity’ no longer as simply assistance for the poorest, but as a global rethinking of the whole system, as a quest for ways to reform it and correct it in a way consistent with the fundamental human rights of all human beings. It is essential to restore to this word ‘solidarity’, viewed askance by the world of economics — as if it were a bad word — the social citizenship that it deserves. Solidarity is not an additional attitude, it is not a form of social alms-giving but, rather, a social value; and it asks us for its citizenship.
The current crisis is not only economic and financial but is rooted in an ethical and anthropological crisis. Concern with the idols of power, profit, and money, rather than with the value of the human person has become a basic norm for functioning and a crucial criterion for organization. We have forgotten and are still forgetting that over and above business, logic and the parameters of the market is the human being; and that something is men and women in as much as they are human beings by virtue of their profound dignity: to offer them the possibility of living a dignified life and of actively participating in the common good. Benedict XVI reminded us that precisely because it is human, all human activity, including economic activity, must be ethically structured and governed (cf. Encyclical Letter Caritas in Veritate, n. 36). We must return to the centrality of the human being, to a more ethical vision of activities and of human relationships without the fear of losing something.”
- Pope Francis, TO THE CENTESIMUS ANNUS PRO PONTIFICE FOUNDATION, 25 May 2013

Il caro acciaio sta deprimendo l’industria italiana
Tumblr media
Read the full article

Random Personal Ego Head Canons Part 5
~ Heehoo is kinda like a guard dog for the Iplier Manor. He’s paid in takis and allowed to roam the halls in his birthday suit for his services. Because of this most egos rarely look below their own waists for fear of seeing... anything. He’s not allowed in Dark’s office but sometimes Wilford lets him in there just to piss him off.
~ Behind the manor is a large, beautiful lake where the Gongoozler resides. He is one of the few non-Ipliers allowed to live on the manor’s property regularly. This is, of course, due to his association with Unus Annus. He generally prefers to be alone, lurking in the murky depths. But, being the curious creature he is, takes a liking to Wilford, who regularly goes for the swim in the lake and isn’t afraid to chat with him.
~ Unus, when not living in the Cranky Crib (bad name ik) with the rest of Gameplays, also has a room of his own in the manor. It’s right across the hall from Annus’ room, which is easy to tell as Annus’ door is white and Unus’ door is black. Both have glass skulls as handles and their first initial outlined on the wood in the other’s color.
~ Marvin meditates daily. He says he does it to improve his focus and to better hone his magic. But, in all honestly, it’s mostly cause his house mates give him a damn headache and this is one of the few things that help him cope with their constant insanity.
~ Anti has pretty severe anxiety. Yeah, maybe he’s a relentless ball of chaos, and yeah, maybe he’s a killer with little to no remorse... but this bad boy can fit SO much anxiety in him. It’s enough to even rival Eric at times, yet the way it manifests is entirely different. Feeling like he’s being forgotten is a huge hang up for him. He fidgets, glitches, and paces when it gets really bad and he’ll get snappy too. He’ll stutter with not just words but his whole being, like a bad film reel stuck on replay. He may even cause a power outage if it gets really out of hand that can become city wide.
~ Whenever Yancy is staying at Happy Trails Penitentiary the egos generally send him mail about what’s going on in the outside world. He mostly gets mail from Illinois, telling Yancy of his adventures. How Illinois even manages to send the letters from his remote locations with no mail carrier is a mystery to everyone. Regardless, the letters are some of the few things that make Yancy think freedom isn’t so bad.
~ Robbie loves, loves, loves flowers... but isn’t very good at keeping them alive. He’s tried having a garden before, but he wound up forgetting to water them and weed them. So, to satisfy his love for them, he regularly visits the Iplier Manor to see Eric’s flower garden which is in full bloom at all times--even through the winter months thanks to Dark’s powers. Together they fawn over the day lilies and daisies--Eric’s favorite flowers that take up a large chunk of the garden. He plans on planting some lavender and aster just for Robbie as those are his favorite.
~ Chase is really into art. He loves sketching and painting the most with charcoal, conte crayons, and oil paints. He typically sketches portraits and paints landscapes. Sometimes he’ll even sketch his lost family, but he never shows these to anyone, not even his therapist. If he’s really in a dark place he may even burn a sketch or two. One time he burned over 30 of them he had done over the years. Still, he doesn’t have the strength to paint them cause that would feel too permanent.
~ Magnum likes to keep his ship in tiptop shape. He prides himself on having one of the cleanest pirate ships around. While he does this, not out of a competitive spirit, but to improve morale among his ever dying changing crew, he does still secretly hope his ship will someday be on the cover of Pirate’s Die-chest. It’s his favorite magazine and it would mean so much to him.
