Outlawed by Anna North
Informal
First of all, North, fucking thank you for a bad ass, no pronoun, leader cowboy awesometastic fucker because damn, I did not know how badly I needed to see someone like the Kid.
Like how often do you get someone who obstains from pronouns in a leadership role?
And fuck, my dude, I learned a thing or two reading it. I always wondered, how the fuck do you write a no-pronoun mofo without sounding klunky as hell.
Spoilers: it’s creative sentence structure and making said character VERY dialogue heavy lol
It wasn’t until a couple of kid scenes that it really hit me: “wait a second, why don’t my no-pronoun characters sound this good.” It’s very artfully done.
In fact, the whole book is aesthetic as fuck. Like from the descriptive prose, to the way scenes are laid out. Coming from The Murderbot Diaries, which, don’t get me wrong, are hella fun books but the heavy lifting is done vi Murderbot’s personality and less flowery prose.
Flowery prose like this *chiefs kiss* it’s like dining on the equivalent of candied rose petals. Utterly decadent. *mwah!*
It has a slow start. Granted, it’s set in the 1800s and makes it perfect for some scenery chewing.
If I had to pick my 3 favorite scenes, I’d say it’d be
pg49-55 the fire pit scene (you’ll know when you see it ;)
pg62- 69 Elzy and Kid teaching Ada to shoot
pg247-249 i love when lose ends come together
I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did tbh. It has a little lull before the half way point that maybe me question it after Ada gets in with the Hole in the Wall gang but then fucks up. So if you get to that point where it feels like it’s lasting forever, push through if you can. It’s totes worth it <3
Edit: yeah technically no pronouns isn’t neo but I count it cuz fuck yeah.

Reading outlawed by Anna North and like. Huge kudos to Sonia Bonné (translator). Because one of the characters (the kid) is enby I'm pretty sure she somehow managed to just. Not use pronouns when talking about them. Like, at all.
At first he/him was used but ever since it was basically explicitly stated that they are enby (p sure the pronoun is they/them in the original) I think she just managed to. Not use pronouns altogether (cuz there isn't a gender neutral one in german)?? And did it so well I'm only really noticing about halfway through?!
Gonna be keeping a closer eye now but if she really did that? Huge kudos. Like oh my god. Especially cuz the translation is still genuinely good. Wtf.

2023 Reading Challenge | A book that's on a celebrity book-club list. [x]
35/40. Fuorilegge - Anna North
"Il sapere può essere molto prezioso," spiegò, "ma solo se la gente lo vuole. Se non lo vuole, può essere ancora peggio che inutile."
Knowledge can be very valuable... but only if people want it. If they don't, it can be worse than useless. [Outlawed - A. North]

The horse’s eyes were wild and her muzzle foamy, and I knew she could knock me or Amity unconscious with one kick, but Amity didn’t stumble or shy. Instead she befan to nuzzle Prudence along her snout and neck in a gesture so tender it made me miss my sisters, the way they would lean in to butterfly-kiss my cheeks with their eyelashes.
