Soft and warm and happy. You were everything that Remus Lupin felt like he didn't get in his life. And even when he didn't know it, you still brought an unfiltered joy into his life.
The Gryffindor common room had seen some recent changes, the biggest one being Remus’ new companion, a scrappy, furry little thing that hung on his shoulder or in his sweater. Cats had always been allowed in Gryffindor, but a small kitten was a new update.
He had found you lingering around the whomping willow; playing and dancing around the tree’s various attacks. With your soft wispy fur and your long whiskers, immediately he was enthralled. Not to mention, he had needed something to keep him going after his transformation the night before.
So you two became a pair, a loved pair. Little first years would surround Remus asking to pet you and James and Sirius would use you for pranks and Remus would let you sleep in his bed. He really loved you, even when you were gone, he would patiently wait.
But what he didn't know was that you were never actually gone.
You were intelligent, for sure. And you were loud, and fun, and crass, and all the things that made people laugh loudly and smile unabashedly. Remus saw something bright and spunky in you and the way you’d light the people around you. And whilst your otherwise silly jokes made people assume the least, your unrestrained time in the library and constant practice and yearning for your curiosity to be satisfied resulted in an early animagi status.
Though intensely illegal to practice that kind of magic underage and without recognition from the ministry, becoming an animagi fulfilled a part of yourself that otherwise you wouldn't have ever felt complete without. When you first transformed into that small tabby, the world around you went silent. You felt different and the same, you were content.
So you continued, spending time in your new form doing whatever random tasks you wanted to do. And eventually, you picked up a companion who unbeknownst to you, knew both sides of the coin.
Remus had started taking you into account on the sorting ceremony of that year. You had accidentally turned up late and took the first empty seat you saw, the one next to him. The both of you had never spoken one on one until that moment, and he swears that he didn't know what a proper laugh felt like until you uttered that first joke; even better, he didn't know what an angel sounded like until he heard your laugh.
Then, he would see you in the library, in his potions class, in the gryffindor common room, it was like you were everywhere, until you weren't.
He stopped seeing you as often and assumed that maybe, maybe he wasn't as down bad as he had been before, maybe he was getting over you. And then you sat next to him in potions and all of his feelings came tumbling back.
Remus rushed to his dorm room with his face blushing all different colours and his fingers picking at his scars. He was spiraling and didn't know what he could do, until he saw her: his little tabby rolling on his bed, waiting patiently.
He scooped her up, letting her eyes match his at eye level, and started confiding.
“I don't know what to do,” he stuttered, his hands engulfing her arms. “I need her so badly, she's perfect for me.”
You were confused to say the least, purring and distracting him from whatever ailed him. It was unbecoming, watching Remus ramble about his dream girl, until he mentioned your name. Your eyes widened, and you jumped out of his hands. Sometimes being smart isn't enough and in this case, you had no idea what to do. You scampered back out of his line of vision and into your room, transforming back and realising you had to do something, you had to make a move.
All week, Remus waited for his tabby to come back, and come Hogsmeade, he went out to buy her some treats. Mid his store run, you found him, looking between aisles for various different snacks.
“I want to talk to you,” you smiled and he felt his world turn a little faster.
Remus abandoned the snacks and you led him outside, to a bench. He felt something shift inside him as you stared into his eyes.
“I really like you,” he burst out, his normal composure almost disappearing now that he was this close to you. You softly laughed and he felt his heartbeat quicken.
“We should go and share a butterbeer.”

“Dad-?! Dad!” You were startled awake, by the sounds of Harry. You were spending a few days, at Hogwarts, with Lupin. As his romantic partner it was permitted, but it sure did startle students to see someone who wasn’t their teacher in the classroom. Such as you, having fallen asleep at his desk. You were waiting for Lupin, but it seems sleep caught you first. Until now.
“Have you seen dad-?” Harry asked, as he hurried towards you. A bottle in hand, with a worried look. You did not like where this was going. You really hope that was not a full bottle of wolfsbane. As if that was needed right now. You sat up quickly and straightened up.
"He said he needed to run and talk to someone really quick, and asked for me to stay here until he came back." Now that you said it out loud, it made you very suspicious. You had a bad feeling about this. A very very very bad feeling. It seemed the feeling was mutual, and no words were needed. The two of you were soon running out of the classroom, and straight outside. Wands out.
"Great, just great-" You huffed, as the two of you were now roaming around the grounds. A worry of what happened with Remus, and if the Dementors would come your way. You made sure to hold Harry's hand, and he did not refuse it. He had a uncomfortable run in with the Dementors after all, as if he wanted another.
"Should we ask Hagrid for help?" Harry asked, as you pondered. That could be very helpful. He was a monster keeper of sorts, and more people looking could reduce casualties. Fang could help as well, but Hagrid was not the best with secrets. Still.....You had a werewolf boyfriend on the loose, and one not on potions.
"I will go talk to Hagrid; you go to the Shrieking Shack. Maybe he went there by habit?" Seems like Hermione was really rubbing off on him, because that made perfect sense. You recall a few times you could hear him, when locked in his designated room, about a shack. Along with his night terrors, and school days.
The plan was set, and Harry explained to you how to get there. Most likely knowing, in case of emergencies. The two of you would split, and Harry hurried to Hagrid's Hut. You stayed, until he made it. Just to be sure. Once he had entered the home, you would hurry to the tree, it was terrifying, but you had to. For Remus.
You had to army crawl, and enter with a few scrapes, but you managed. You hit the knot in the tree, and was able to slip through the roots. Through the dirty cavern, and across the rocks. It was a journey, but you managed. You would push at the wooden boards, and soon had your head in the shack. The stench of blood heavy in your nose. He was here.
"Moony?" You whispered, as the world went still. Even the wind seemed afraid to speak. You were terrified, but someone had to be there for him. You swallowed your biile, and forced yourself into the house. Onto your knees, wand in hand, before properly standing.
Deep breaths, that made you gag, in a vain attempt to try and calm yourself. You knew this when he told you what he was. He didn’t want you to sign up blind. He didn’t want to feel like he trapped you. The moment he told you, you tried to study all you could. Meaning you carried your own vile of wolfsbane. Small, but hopefully enough to soothe.
As you tried to follow the stench, you couldn’t help but hear something. It was someone. Someone gagging, and coughing. Seeming to be….No. No no. You had hope the blood you smelled was that of a wild animal, but no. It was of someone.
You wanted to barge in, and see if you could save them, but that could cause issues. Like him turning on you. Instead, you kept your steps quiet. Just coming closer, as the figure kept gasping and wheezing. Begging. What made your blood run cold was what the person said.
“Remus, please….You would have done the same in my place. You would ha-“ Before there was silence. Silence, as bones were snapping. Crunching, and being devoured. They were dead, and you knew that you couldn’t do anything to have prevented it. You tried to reason, at least.
Finally, you were at the door. Given quite the sight to behold. This sickly looking beast, chowing away on a dead body. Beyond recognition, except for an arm. Said arm having been torn off, and slammed into the wall near the door frame. You narrowed your eyes, as you saw it was missing a finger. Clearly before the attack, as the numb was healed over.
Before you could wonder who the figure was, you suddenly felt something bite at your leg. Not in a means to attack. It was so gentle, you almost didn’t notice. A attempt to grab your attention. It succeeded, as you looked down to a black dog. Shaggy, skinny, and struggling to pull you away from the door. A means to get you away.
Seems it acted too late, as the nawing of flesh was silenced. Just the eerie sounds of blood falling on wood, as the werewolf looked over. Blacken eyes focused on you, as it growled. Clawed, and mangled, fingers were soon on the floor. Cautiously approaching you, only for the dog to block its path. Guarding you.
You didn’t know what to do. Do you run? Do you stay? Do you move slowly? You can only read so many books, before you face a real deal. Nothing prepares you for a real life experience. Was he staring at you because he recognized you? Was he no longer hungry? Was he aware of your scent, and wouldn’t harm you?
So many thoughts, only to be silenced by an ear rattling howl. That said that, and you were trying to run for your life. The shaggy dog quick to defend you, and jump at Remus. Buying you time, as you tried to think of where to go. Leave the building? Back into the hole? You didn’t know. Before you could make a choice, the rotten wood broke under you.
Crashing through you went, only for your leg to snap in the process. You screamed in pain, and that alerted Remus to you. You tried to fight through the pain, as you held your wand up. Trying to defend yourself, as Remus tore through more of the wood. Leaving splinters to rain down on you, as you laid in the broken old living room.
“REMUS-! PLEASE-!” You sobbed, as you didn’t want to hurt him. Blood pooled around you, as the torn muscle was shreds around your shattered bone. So much pain, panic, and despair. Was this the end? Dispite it all, all you could think of was how this would affect Remus. The guilt he would hold, when the moon rises again. Only to see you dead in his teeth.
Seemed that would only be a nightmare, as he was slow to approach you. Sniffing you, before looking down at your leg. Giving it a lick, and whine. As if trying to help you. If you weren’t so delirious from pain, you would find it sweet.
“Fuck, you look like shit.” A voice spoke to you, as Remus seemed to curl around you. Using himself a pillow, for you to rest on. Just feeling his ribs, and hearing his strong breathing and heart. It was soothing, and let you catch your breath. Long enough to register where the voice came from.
A man was soon standing infront of you, in a Azkaban uniform. With long, black, shaggy hair. With a beard to match, against his gaunt face. So skinny, yet so alive. Shaggy black hair, just like shaggy black fur. That’s when it hit you.
“Padfoot….” You choked out, when you weren’t crying from pain. The name made him smile, and you could see life in his hollow eyes. It warmed his heart so much, knowing Remus told you about him. That he was still spoken so positively. That Remus didn’t believe the verdict. He knew better.
“That’s me. Now be quiet, and take advantage of Mooney having a full belly.” He hushed you, as he would begin to try and help with your leg. He would take his torn shirt off, and forced you to bite into it. Trying to make you quiet, as he popped the bone into place. Making you scream into the fabric, as you held Remus tighter. Suppose in that feral brain of his could register his mate was hurting, and soon was nuzzling his face against yours. Using his nose to wipe your tears away.
“There. Worse of it is over. Now how about-“ Before he could finish, the sound of the basement door was opening. Before Sirius could do anything, you grabbed his pant leg. Trying to get him to stay. The pain, however, made you feel to weak. Your vision was blurring, as you curled up against Remus. It was all to much, and soon…..You blacked out.
Morning came, and it was unwanted. The sunlight on your face, and making you groan. “Five more minutes-“ Was your reply to the beast, before a chuckle was a reply. A chuckle you knew very well. A laugh that made you fight the sun, and open your eyes. Remus.
“Morning, pup.” He smiled, as he set his book aside. His scared up hand was quick to help brush the sleep from your eyes, as you took in the world. Such as how your leg was propped up, and that all the blinding white was from the medical wing. Another comforting sight was that Padfoot was in another medical bed. Being treated, and not sent to Azkaban.
“Lots of questions, I know. I’ll keep it short. I had made an attempt to go check on Sirius, last night, only for the two of us to stumble upon a familiar rat. We chased him for so long, we didn’t register the moon. Suppose it was a good thing we didn’t. A lot of good has now been done, with him disposed.” Despite what seemed like good news, there were tears in his eyes. Like he lost an old friend. Suppose you’ll ask about that later. Now, you needed rest.
“I can’t believe you came chasing after me.” He tsked, as he was already using a cold rag on your face. Helping you cool off. “Suppose Harry is to blame. I could have hurt you. I would never forgive myself if I had infected you to. I could have-“ He went on and on, before you held his hand. Forcing him to stop, as you smiled.
“Then you won’t be so lonely on those full moons, would you?” He wanted to be frustrated with you, but that would be rather hypocritical. So, he just gave a defeated sigh. With a smile. “I have a type, it seems….” Was added, as Harry was soon to enter the wing. Along with his friends. Hermione, and Ron. All needing answers about why an escaped convict was in the medical wing.
Remus would give a sigh, as you scooted over. As best as you could, so he could sit with you. The trio was soon on the neighboring bed, sitting together, while keep quiet for Sirius to sleep. A snuggle into Remus’s lap, and he took a deep breath. Knowing you were there to support him.
“It all started, when three little Gryffindors thought it was wise to become unregistered Animagi….”

A little snip bit of what I've been working on lately :)
Hermione’s hands moved to his ears and her fingers started to move in something like little circles at the base of them, before a great rumbling burst from his chest. The bees broke free of his ribcage and were now buzzing around in his throat.  “Harry!” Hermione giggled as she continued that absolutely amazing thing she was doing with her thumbs. He could hardly think with how good it felt and the rumbling grew louder. The bees led a headstrong assault and monopolized his mouth as he felt it open just a hair, letting out that loud buzzing even more so. It dipped and rolled along with his breathing and oh, was it relaxing. Harry felt his head tilt to the side into Hermione’s hands and the constant baritone rumble grew louder.  “Blimey, Harry,” Ron snickered somewhere closer to his other side. He hadn’t dared open his eyes yet to pinpoint exactly where though— too afraid that that sharpness would reenter his skull with a vengeance if he did. “You sound like an irritated Flobberworm, mate,” Ron joked even if it didn’t sound like he was joking.   “Or a lawn mower,” Hermione added helpfully.  “What’s a lawn mower?” Ron asked and only gained a particularly long eye roll from the girl beside him.  Harry didn’t give two flying graphorns what he sounded like, just as long as Hermione kept doing that with her fingers along his ears. It occurred to Harry later that he had been purring, very loudly as that, but he didn’t care. Not one bit.

Harry Potter Fic Idea: Marauders Era, Regulus Black-centric Animagus AU
---
AU where Regulus figured out that Sirius and his friends were Animagi and, in order to prove to himself that he could do it too, became an Animagus himself.
This winds up coming in handy later down the line when his parents go too far and Regulus responds by waiting until their backs are turned to transform into a cat and run.
Unknowing where to go or how to survive on his own, Regulus winds up making his way to Hogwarts where he then spends the next however many weeks until the rest of the students return living as a cat full-time.***
---
VERSION A: SIRIUS
Sirius is distraught and confused by his brother's sudden mysterious disappearance, and he then becomes even more confused when he notices Regulus' name on the Marauders' Map...but no Regulus.
Regulus is, of course, right there—hiding as a cat just out of sight.
It takes a while for the Marauders to convince Regulus to come out from wherever he was hiding (one or two of them was convinced he had somehow procured an Invisibility Cloak) and when he does they are absolutely gobsmacked by the fact that he's an Animagus (too).
But then he doesn't transform back—he even starts to back away, ears pressed down flat, when they try to pressure him. They quickly realize that Regulus has been living entirely as a cat, too scared to transform back in case someone sees, terrified that his parents are somehow going to find him if he does, and so they resolve to show him a place where he can transform safely.
They carefully, cautiously lead him to the Room of Requirement where they finally manage to just barely coerce Regulus into transforming back, and when they do they almost scare him into a cat again with their gasps of shock because...Regulus is absolutely filthy, to put it lightly.
His hair is limp and greasy and overgrown, the skin around his eyes sunken and dark, his clothing is torn and muddy, he's pale and he can't seem to stop trembling; Overall, he's a mess.
They wind up feeding him some snacks from their bags (for weeks—months?—he's been eating the same as what the pet cats eat) and from that point on the Room of Requirement essentially becomes Regulus' Room, with them regularly visiting to bring him (human) food and keep him company.
Regulus can't bear to spend all of his time cooped up however, too scared of feeling trapped, and one thing leads to another which leads to...the rest of the student body thinking that Sirius is coping with his baby brother's sudden disappearance and possible death by taking in a traumatized young kitten who reminds him of his brother.
From then on it's not unusual for Sirius to be seen walking around with a small black cat balanced on his shoulders. (Some even whisper that they've heard him call the cat "Regulus"—could it be the Black Family Madness finally taking effect, they wonder...?)
VERSION B: MCGONAGALL
Do you really think Professor McGonagall, resident Cat Animagus of Hogwarts, wouldn't notice that the new cat on the block is a wizard masquerading as a stray?
Of course she noticed, but she also noticed that it was a kitten, a child, a student…
It takes a long time for the kitten to warm up to her, and even longer for her to be able to entice it into the Guest Quarters she'd had set up in her own suite for it.
She feels bad when they—Madame Pomfrey, herself, and maybe one or two other members of the faculty—corner the kitten and temporarily force it to turn back so they could (a) give it a proper check-up, and (b) figure out who the hell it is once and for all.
They'd looked into who it might be, of course, and there were no students reported missing, but, suspiciously, the Black Family was being obtuse about where Regulus Black was… (Overseas, ill?) So they'd had their suspicions. Nevertheless, to actually confirm it… None of them had quite been able to believe it until that point.
It's clear to anyone that they will not be sending him back home—when they'd forced him to change back he'd been a horrible, trembling mess and they'd actually had to knock him out just to give him a check-up. He was malnourished and dirty and, when pressed, had barely been able to stutter out a barebones story of how and why he'd wound up in this state—his parents, their abuse, and their Death Eater ultimatum.
Things move quicker after that. The Ministry is contacted, McGonagall is given temporary guardianship…
Suddenly they face issue of what to do when the term resumes, not only because Regulus still refuses to spend much time at all in his human form, and never in public or in front of more than one or two trusted people at a time… Even if that weren't an issue, it has come to their attention that Regulus wouldn't be safe in his dorm, surrounded by current and future Death Eaters.
This leads to them making a new decree: any student that feels unsafe in their dorm may privately petition to be placed in the new, temporary (mixed House) dorms.
Applicants will be accepted or denied only after careful consideration to ensure that the new, neutral dorms retain their status as a Safe Zone.
You can imagine the shock—the absolute pandemonium—when this is announced at the Welcome Feast.
…and Regulus is still a cat.
Considering the circumstances it is deemed best for his mental health not to force him to transform back in situations where he is uncomfortable with it, at least until he is ready, but Professor McGonagall can hardly let him go without an education, can she?
So they come up with a rather unorthodox solution: the Professors will play Hot Potato with Kitten Regulus, passing him between them between classes and letting him sit on their shoulders while they lecture and demonstrate spells so that, even if he can't necessarily participate, he's at least still learning something.
[tbc]
***I figure that Hogwarts must feed the students' pets considering that students aren't exactly allowed to leave the Grounds whenever to go buy pet food, nor can I imagine the parents mailing it regularly... Did Harry feed Hedwig himself? I don't think so. So it must be the staff or the groundskeeper or, most likely, the House Elves looking after them, and subsequently Cat-Regulus as well.

I just had a thought, did the Mauraders (or anyone else) ever give McGonagall's cat form a name?
I'm pretty sure they didn't in canon; in fan fiction- I'm sure I've read a few that did but I can't think of any right now.
What name would you give her?

November Prompt 14: Mud Puddles
Words: 709 | Pairing: Sirius Black x reader
Tumblr media
You were just sixteen when a joyous James and Sirius peered over your book to ask you on an adventure after study sessions in The Great Hall. You vividly remember complaining about the rain that day. It was heavy and cold. The sky was a deep grey that hung over the castle and the grounds. A storm was coming and you three could sense it.
You needed this storm and they knew that. Time had been of the essence.
Sirius and James had stayed behind in the Shrieking Shack, a secret hideout for all of your friends over the last few years, while you found your vial, purely red and untouched.
You’d practiced for years, for months for a chance to finally be amongst your friends in the secrecy of an animagus form. You knew the incantation just as well as you knew Potion brewing and the plants in Herbology; there was no more room for error, everything had to be perfect.
You were alone when you stated the words and drank the liquid in the vial, lightening had been in the sky just moments before. Your body felt as though it were ablaze, then you could faintly detect a heartbeat amongst your own. Within seconds, you were in a body you didn’t recognize, burying your wand into the earth’s floor near the base of a tree you’d marked days before. It’d be safe there until you returned with Sirius and James.
You trot back to the Shrieking Shack, feeling the cool ground and mud underneath the pads of your paws. It didn’t feel the same as running around in the protection of your rain boots. In this form everything feels strange, more surreal.
Just to the corner of the house, you spot Sirius’ silhouette and you make your way towards him.
“Y/n?” He chuckles through the thunder, giving your furry head a soft pat and rub.
You whine softly, admiring his touch even in the form of a harmless animal. You know what you need to do to transform back, but to master it will take practice. With time, it will come to you naturally and Sirius won’t have to bring spare clothes for you anymore.
You peer around one last time making sure it’s just you and him before changing back into your human form, naked and cold against the showering rain; though, it does an amazing job of cleaning the dirt and mud off your skin. Sirius pulls your shivering body close, trying not to stare at your hardened buds and bare mound. He wouldn’t mind seeing this way a bit longer, his body’s reaction is proof enough of that, but the nipping coldness is enough to keep you both centered in reality.
There’s a rustling noise around the back and you falter back slightly, your foot planting right into a puddle of mud.
“It’s just James,” Sirius rasps while cloaking the robe around your shoulders and leaning down to tie it off at your waist. “How’re you feeling, love?”
Your eyes widen in the grayness, more alert at the pet name than when you’d turned into one moments ago.
“Achy,” you answer softly.
Sirius’ eyes are as gray as the clouds in the sky, but even the cloudiness and rain isn’t enough to shield the clear view of how perfect he appears in front of you. His tiny frame curves against the decay of the wooden slats lining the house. The rain forms droplets at the ends of his wavy brown hair before collecting in the pool of mud at your feet. He’s more gorgeous than he’s ever been.
He tilts your chin up just enough for you to peer at him through wet lashes and within an instant, his lips close against yours. His bony hands come to your rounded cheeks, taking in the warmth before he closes the gap between your bodies. And when he pulls away, your knees feel weak and your head is spinning at the thought of kissing your best friend.
“You should get dressed before James comes around. And we’d better fetch your wand before the rain washes it away.”
You nod mindlessly, following his lead into the storm without another word and Prongs’ soft footsteps following close behind.

If you were in the HP universe, would you go through the whole ordeal of becoming an animagus?
I want to have an accurate reference of how many people would become animagi for writing cause I feel like it's underutilized and when people write stories with a lot of animagi, it's called out as unrealistic for canon, like that many people wouldn't end up being animagi. I really just don't believe that, I know I would absolutely do it, as would most if not all of my friends. Imo Harry's friends in canon were just dorks with no willpower to actually do literally the coolest thing in those books.

I really don't mind fanon portrayals all that much, but I was reading a lot of Harry Potter fics lately and I've realized that "Lily was the smart one" and "James and Sirius preferred to goof off and weren't good at studies" is usually the trope.
Now, I love it when Lily gets more character depth, I've always thought of her as this potions whiz with a sharp tongue. But James and Sirius? You mean the same ones who made the Marauders Map? Managing to plot Hogwarts - which, if I'm remembering correctly is supposed to unplottable - and turned themselves into Animagi which is hinted to be a very impressive magic? Not to mention almost everyone else seems to mention them being bright? I'm not making this up, here are a couple of quotes:
"Your father and Sirius here were the cleverest students in the school, and lucky they were, because the Animagus transformation can go horribly wrong — one reason the Ministry keeps a close watch on those attempting to do it. Peter needed all the help he could get from James and Sirius."
Remus Lupin, Prisoner of Azkaban.
"Look, Harry, what you’ve got to understand is that your father and Sirius were the best in the school at whatever they did."
Remus again, Order of the Phoneix.
"Black and Potter. Ringleaders of their little gang. Both very bright, of course — exceptionally bright, in fact — but I don't think we've ever had such a pair of troublemakers —"
Minerva McGonagall, Prisoner of Azkaban.
And some might consider this over-confidence but they were both calm as can be after the OWLS, and were confident that they'd do well.
Well, I thought that paper was a piece of cake,' he heard Sirius say. ‘I’ll be surprised if I don’t get “Outstanding” on it at least.
You might,' said Lupin darkly from behind his book. ‘We’ve still got Transfiguration, if you’re bored you could test me. Here ...' and he held out his book. But Sirius snorted. ‘I don’t need to look at that rubbish, I know it all.'
From Order of The Phoenix.
So, you know, maybe check on that. I'm not bashing on anyone's portrayals. It's fanfiction, have fun! I just, it's concerning, because these characterizations have become the staple, you know? To the point where I feel like people sort of think it's canon. I'm not even joking, I had a friend tell me she wondered how James and Sirius managed to pass out of school, and I was like: "You did read the books, right?"
It's like how people think Harry and Ron barely passed when in the books, it's mention that they "passed with flying colors" if I'm not wrong. Just 'cause they don't study twenty-four/seven doesn't mean they're stupid, jeez.

Finding Home - Chapter 9
A/N: Any recognized dialogue is J.K. Rowling's. I do not support her views, I'm simply writing fanfiction I enjoy.
I have gotten several questions about the Remus-having-sled-dogs plotline from my friend, who I share all drafts with before posting. All will be revealed in tomorrow's chapter, I promise. Stay tuned for daily updates!
“You’re both mental.”
“Ridiculous!” said the girl faintly.
“Peter Pettigrew’s dead!” said Harry. “He killed him twelve years ago!” He pointed at Sirius, whose face twitched convulsively. “And who the hell is Prongs?”
“I meant to kill him,” Sirius growled, teeth bared, “but little Peter got the better of me . . . not this time, though!”
He lunged at the rat — Remus yelped with fear and hoisted the rat above his head. He was taller than Sirius, though not by much.
“Sirius, NO!” he yelled, and I barked to gain his attention. “WAIT! You can’t do it just like that — they need to understand — we’ve got to explain —”
“We can explain afterwards!” snarled Sirius, trying to grab the rat from Remus’ hand.
“They’ve — got — a — right — to — know — everything!” Remus panted. “Ron’s kept him as a pet! There are parts of it even I don’t understand! And Harry — you owe Harry the truth, Sirius!”
Sirius stopped, though his hollowed eyes were fixed on the rat. Remus slowly lowered him, though he kept a firm grip on its scruff.
“All right, then,” Sirius said, without taking his eyes off the rat. “Tell them whatever you like. But make it quick, Remus. I want to commit the murder I was imprisoned for. . . .”
“You’re nutters, both of you,” said Ron shakily, looking at Harry and the girl. “I’ve had enough of this. I’m off.”
He tried to heave himself up on his good leg, but Remus raised the magic stick that smelled of autumn leaves and leather and chocolate.
“You’re going to hear me out, Ron,” he said quietly.
Harry pushed Ron back down onto the bed, then turned to Remus. “There were witnesses who saw Pettigrew die,” he said. “A whole street full of them . . .”
“They didn’t see what they thought they saw!” Sirius said savagely.
“Everyone thought Sirius killed Peter,” said Remus, nodding. “I believed it myself — until I saw the map tonight. Because the Marauder’s Map never lies . . . Peter’s alive. I’m holding him, Harry. And so’s your father.” He pointed at me with his free hand.
Harry looked down at Ron, exchanging glances. The girl spoke, her voice trembling.
“But Professor Lupin . . . Scabbers can’t be Peter Pettigrew . . . it just can’t be true, you know it can’t . . .”
“Why can’t it be true?” Remus asked calmly.
“Because . . . because people would know if Peter Pettigrew had been an Animagus. We did Animagi in class with Professor McGonagall. And I looked them up when I did my homework — the Ministry of Magic keeps tabs on witches and wizards who can become animals; there’s a register showing what animal they become, and their markings and things . . . and I went and looked Professor McGonagall up on the register, and there have been only seven Animagi this century, and Pettigrew’s name wasn’t on the list —”
Remus started to laugh. “Right again, Hermione!” he said. “But the Ministry never knew that there used to be three unregistered Animagi running around Hogwarts.”
“If you’re going to tell them the story, get a move on, Remus,” snarled Sirius. “I’ve waited twelve years, I’m not going to wait much longer.”
“All right . . . but you’ll need to help me, Sirius,” said Remus, “I only know how it began . . .”
I trotted over to the door, sniffing. I had picked up a new scent, a person I’d never smelled before. I let out a low snarl, and Remus raised his magic stick toward me. My nose told me someone was there. My hackles raised, and I let out another low growl.
Whoever was there was completely invisible. I could only smell them. But I knew they were there.
“Chocolate, leave it,” Sirius said firmly, but I ignored him for the first time in my life.
Behind me, I heard Ron’s outburst.
“This place is haunted!”
“It’s not,” said Remus, turning away from me. “The Shrieking Shack was never haunted. . . . The screams and howls the villagers used to hear were made by me.”
He paused for a moment, then said, “That’s where all of this starts — with my becoming a werewolf. None of this could have happened if I hadn’t been bitten . . . and if I hadn’t been so foolhardy . . .”
Ron started to say something, but the girl quieted him. I turned around and nosed Remus’ hand for comfort.
“I was a very small boy when I received the bite. My parents tried everything, but in those days there was no cure. The potion that Professor Snape has been making for me is a very recent discovery. It makes me safe, you see. As long as I take it in the week preceding the full moon, I keep my mind when I transform. . . . I am able to curl up in my office, a harmless wolf, and wait for the moon to wane again.
“Before the Wolfsbane Potion was discovered, however, I became a fully-fledged monster once a month. It seemed impossible that I would be able to come to Hogwarts. Other parents weren’t likely to want their children exposed to me.
“But then Dumbledore became headmaster, and he was sympathetic. He said that as long as we took certain precautions, there was no reason I shouldn’t come to school. . . .” Remus sighed, and looked directly at Harry. “I told you, months ago, that the Whomping Willow was planted the year I came to Hogwarts. The truth is that is it was planted because I came to Hogwarts. This house” — Remus looked miserably around the room — “the tunnel that leads to it — they were built for my use. Once a month, I was smuggled out of the castle, into this place, to transform. The tree was placed at the tunnel mouth to stop anyone coming across me while I was dangerous.”
I remembered all of this — the long nights, the dog and the wolf playing, the feeling of the rat sitting on my rack of antlers. My lips curled at the memory. Traitor.
“My transformations in those days were — were terrible. It is very painful to turn into a werewolf. I was separated from humans to bite, so I bit and scratched myself instead. The villagers heard the noise and the screaming and thought they were hearing particularly violent spirits. Dumbledore encouraged the rumor. . . . Even now, when the house has been silent for years, the villagers don’t dare approach it. . . .
“But apart from my transformations, I was happier than I had ever been in my life. For the first time ever, I had friends, three great friends. Sirius Black . . . Peter Pettigrew . . . and, of course, your father, Harry — James Potter.”
For a reason I could not fathom, I wagged when Remus said “James Potter.”
“Now, my three friends could hardly fail to notice that I disappeared once a month. I made up all sorts of stories. I told them my mother was ill, and that I had to go and see her. . . . I was terrified they would desert me the moment they found out what I was. But of course, they, like you, Hermione, worked out the truth. . . .
“And they didn’t desert me at all. Instead, they did something for me that would make my transformations not only bearable, but the best times of my life. They became Animagi.”
“My dad too?” said Harry.
“Yes, indeed,” said Remus. “It took them the best part of three years to work out how to do it. Your father and Sirius here were the cleverest students in the school, and lucky they were, because the Animagus transformation can go horribly wrong — one reason the Ministry keeps a close watch on all those attempting to do it. Peter needed all the help he could get from James and Sirius. Finally, in our fifth year, they managed it. They could each turn into a different animal at will.”
“But how did that help you?” said Hermione.
“They couldn’t keep me company as humans, so they kept me company as animals,” said Remus. “A werewolf is only a danger to people. They sneaked out of the castle every month under James’ Invisibility Cloak. They transformed . . . Peter, as the smallest, could slip beneath the Willow’s attacking branches and touch the knot that freezes it. They would then slip down the tunnel and join me. Under their influence, I became less dangerous. My body was still wolfish, but my mind seemed to become less so while I was with them.”
“Hurry up, Remus,” snarled Sirius.
“I’m getting there, Sirius, I’m getting there. . . . well, highly exciting possibilities were open to us now that we could all transform. Soon we were leaving the Shrieking Shack and roaming the school grounds and the village by night. Sirius and James transformed into such large animals, they were able to keep a werewolf in check. I doubt whether any Hogwarts student ever found out more about the Hogwarts grounds and Hogsmeade than we did. . . . And that’s how we came to write the Marauder’s Map, and sign it with our nicknames. Sirius is Padfoot. Peter is Wormtail. James was Prongs.”
I wagged when Remus said my old name.
“What sort of animal — ?” Harry began, but Hermione cut him off.
“That was still really dangerous! Running around in the dark with a werewolf! What if you’d given the others the slip, and bitten somebody?”
“A thought that still haunts me,” said Remus heavily. “And there were near misses, many of them. We laughed about them afterwards. We were young, thoughtless — carried away with our own cleverness.
“I sometimes felt guilty about betraying Dumbledore’s trust, of course . . . he had admitted me to Hogwarts when no other headmaster would have done so, and he had no idea I was breaking the rules he had set down for my own and others’ safety. He never knew I had led three fellow students into becoming Animagi illegally. But I always managed to forget my guilty feelings every time we sat down to plan our next month’s adventure. And I haven’t changed. . . .”
Remus’ face hardened, self-disgust in his voice. “All this year, I have been battling with myself, wondering whether I should tell Dumbledore that Sirius was an Animagus. But I didn’t do it. Why? Because I was too cowardly. It would have meant admitting that I’d betrayed his trust while I was at school, admitting that I’d led others along with me . . . and Dumbledore’s trust has meant everything to me. He let me into Hogwarts as a boy, and he gave me a job this last year, when I was struggling with the dogs. And so, in a way, Snape’s been right about me all along.”
“Snape?” said Sirius harshly, eyes finally leaving the rat. “What’s Snape got to do with it?”
“He’s here, Sirius,” said Remus heavily. “He’s teaching here as well.” He looked up at the kids.
“Professor Snape was at school with us. He fought very hard against my appointment to the Defense Against the Dark Arts job. He has been telling Dumbledore all year that I am not to be trusted. He has his reasons . . . you see, Sirius here played a trick on him which nearly killed him, a trick which involved me —”
Sirius made a derisive noise.
“It served him right,” he sneered. “Sneaking around, trying to find out what we were up to . . . hoping he could get us expelled. . . .”
“Severus was very interested in where I went every month,” Remus told Harry, Ron, and the girl. “We were in the same year, you know, and we — er — didn’t like each other very much. He especially disliked James. Jealous, I think, of James’ talent on the Quidditch field . . . anyway, Snape had seen me crossing the grounds with Madam Pomfrey one evening as she led me to the Whomping Willow to transform. Sirius thought it would be — er — amusing, to tell Snape all he had to do was prod the knot on the tree trunk with a long stick, and he’d be able to get in after me. Well, of course, Snape tried it — if he’d got as far as this house, he’d have met a fully grown werewolf — but your father, who’d heard what Sirius had done, went after Snape and pulled him back, at great risk to his life . . . Snape glimpsed me, though, at the end of the tunnel. He was forbidden by Dumbledore to tell anybody, but from that time on he knew what I was . . .”
“So that’s why Snape doesn’t like you,” said Harry slowly, “because he thought you were in on the joke?”
“That’s right,” sneered a cold voice from the wall behind me.
Severus Snape was pulling off the Invisibility Cloak, his wand pointing directly at Remus.
